FORT ST. JOHN – This is the third time Sean Gallagher won The Best Decked Contest in the northeast quadrant of the city. Gallagher started decorating shortly after Halloween. It took him approximately 75 hours to transform his house into a festival of lights. “We love Christmas, it’s our favourite time of year,” said Gallagher with his five daughters around him. Since his family moved into the house he has decorated it every holiday season. “We bought it 10 years ago and keep adding more, it would be interesting to see what it will look like in another ten years.” Over the past decade, Gallagher estimates he has spent about $15,000 on decorations and lights. “It’s quite expensive,” he said, but added: “It’s the best investment ever made.” Every side of his property is glowing with lights. There’s a nativity scene, nutcrackers, Santa’s workshop, a giant snowman and of course Santa and his reindeer, on the roof, ready for take-off. He even planted four trees during the summer with intentions of decorating them for winter. The City hosted the contest and granted six other houses with The Best Decked title. Doug and Bernice O’Neil won in the northwest quadrant, in the southeast Scott Klein took the title and North East Native Advancing Society (NENAS) won the not-for-profit category. There was a tie between Good 2 Go Shoes and Expert Bailiff and Collections for best-decked business and Russ and Cathy Wilkinson won in the Green (Energy Efficient Lighting) category.

Do you know the health benefits of Hazelwood?

One mom’s story, hazelwood and teething Mylene Lefebvre is a happy mom with a story to tell other moms whose babies are having a difficult time teething. “My little one now has 16 teeth and I never had to give her any medication for teething. Plus I’ve been off cortisone for my eczema since I started using the Pure Hazelwood products.” said Mylene. The story is one that has its roots back in the very, very early days. Many long years ago aboriginal people put chips of hazelwood on their babies’ necks to soothe teething pains. The practice seemed to have been nearly lost until a Quebec couple with a new baby who was teething, was given a necklace made with beads from the hazelwood tree. Genevieve Lagace and Patrick Lafond were delighted when they found that the age-old practice seemed to work wonders, so they began to make necklaces for infants, children and adults. They now have over 70 employees and this is a 100% natural, 100% handmade and 100% Canadian product. They now sell in over 1300 outlets across Canada, the United States and Europe.

Health benefits of Hazelwood for the whole family Hazelwood has the property of neutralizing the body’s acidity. Testimonies from our clients confirm that Hazelwood relieves or soothes: heartburn, gastric reflux, teething, skin problems (psoriasis, acne, eczema), arthritis, osteoarthritis, constipation, migraines, cavities or any ailment associated with surplus acid.

District to have all bus routes running By Jill Earl

DAWSON CREEK- School District 59 has recently come across difficulty filling routes with drivers. In the past month the Bear Mountain Route 41 and the East Pouce Coupe Route 7 have frequently been cancelled. “Just a real shortage of drivers, particularly casual drivers. When someone’s sick or off, we just haven’t got drivers to replace them. What we do is use mechanics and other staff to fill in as much as possible, just sometimes we haven’t been able to fill it all so we’ve had to cancel some bus routes,” said School District 59 Secretary-Treasurer, Gerry Slykhuis. When a bus driver is away, other bus drivers bid for their route. Slykhuis says that the longer routes tend to be more popular because it gives the drivers longer hours and more money at the end of the day. Seniority determines the successful bidder. “The longer routes tend to be more popular, so what you have is this domino effect, so it’s not even the Bear Mountain position it’s just somebody bid on a temporary position somewhere else, it makes it very confusing. The position empty isn’t necessarily where the driver is missing, it’s just that they bid on another position somewhere else,” said Slykhuis. The Bear Mountain Route 41 run was cancelled on Nov. 30 and resumed Dec. 9. Parents were called the night before to be notified, and have had to make arrangements to get their children to school throughout the duration of the cancellation. “The parents have been really good, everybody knows what the economy’s like and hiring staff in this region. Most of the parents that have called us have been very patient with the situation,” said Slykhuis. Slykhuis explains that the market for drivers

in this region is very competitive. He says that most bus drivers only work four to 5 hours a day and use the position to supplement another parttime job. “For drivers in this area, it’s really competitive, particularly for casual work it’s very hard to find people that want to drive a school bus, so it’s been a challenge for us the last year and especially this year to find people,” he said. At the last School Board meeting on Dec. 7, Slykhuis offered a possible solution to the shortage. “One idea that we had thought of is because it’s so hard to get a casual driver, is to hire a permanent position that would float between vacancies, so depending on the run, whatever run is vacant just have them drive on that run for the day, and on the days where there’s no empty positions, just have them work in our shop here. So we’re exploring that right now,” said Slykhuis. The district is in the process of training three casual drivers that will hopefully be starting this week. Slykhuis believes the issue will be cleared up come January.

“Just this past weekend I attended two Christmas parties and ... people were asking for taxi cabs and waiting and not getting a response,” said Counc. Bruce Christensen. Aylward said the small taxi fleet is due to a challenge he can’t control. “You need drivers to provide the service of driving.” He said the issue isn’t about adding more licenses but having a sufficient amount of workers to put them into use. “We have 23 licenses, what we need is about 40 drivers so they can be working the ends of the street, day and night.” The demand for employment in the north isn’t always geared towards the taxi market, said Aylward, which means drivers aren’t available and Teco currently has 17. “Teco can’t put out more cars without drivers,” said Aylward, adding that during the time of writing his letter, the current demand varied between seven to 10 cars on the road at a time. But Thompson said, even that amount may not be sufficient, which is why he believes his service would be useful. “I mean my

Teco Taxi against proposed cab company By Kyla Corpuz

FORT ST. JOHN – After aspiring entrepreneur Bernard Thompson proposed his own taxi service, the president of Teco Taxi quickly dismissed it. “Generally, we would oppose the addition of a new license as it would be counter productive,” read a statement letter by Leonard Aylward, president, CEO, CFO and CAO of Teco Taxi. “We believe that in the event the community requires additional licenses we would be the logical applicant to apply for them.” Thompson believes Aylward’s strong opposition comes from fear of competition. “I think what it is, is that he’s afraid of competition. But you look at the big picture with the Chinese restaurants in town … they’re completely against each other “I think it’s great to have competition, it gives a customer a chance to choose,” said Thompson. But according to Aylward that’s not the case. “No, I’m not opposed to competition at all—it should be fair competition. But how is that fair competiton?” said Aylward referring to Thompson’s proposal as a sole taxi operator. Aylward questions how one car would compete with his $1 million-investment operation. “I have to have a dispatch system 24/7 … with five to six personnel … and a facility to look after them. How is one person coming in with one car competing with that? That’s not called competition, that’s called creaming off the top of the business that’s already there,” he said. However, since Thompson approached council on Oct. 11 with 126 letters of support it has grown to 500, including a letter from the city of Fort St. John and MLA Pat Pimm. Thompson added that if he was granted more than one license he would be willing to run two cars. Council members acknowledged that the current taxi system in the city needs good competition and a bigger fleet on the road.

The year end brings no greater pleasure then the opportunity to express to you season’s greetings and good wishes. May your holidays and new year be filled with joy.

DAWSON CREEK- The energy sector was a prominent topic of a meeting between Premier Christy Clark, Alberta Premier Alison Redford, and Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall. The three premiers met in Edmonton last Tuesday, Dec. 13 as apart of their New West Partnership to discuss shared issues. On the agenda was the labour force and immigration, infrastructure, economic development and the energy sector. “We’ve got a lot of common interests right now, we talked a lot about a Canadian Energy Strategy…we’ve been talking about labour force and immigration and ensuring that we are apart of a national conversation on issues that matter, not only to western Canada but Canada as a whole in terms of economic development,” said Redford in the press conference. “We talked about infrastructure as well which is apart of economic development…it’s essential that our ports and our infrastructure all across the west are functioning as well as they possibly can because that’s what allows trade to flow outside our country and that’s what puts people to work. So certainly infrastructure was on the agenda and for all three of us, we have a vital interest in immigration and labour market agreements because that is one of the most important economic levers at our disposal,” Clark said. The partnership will take their concerns about the energy sector to the Federal government next year, and hopes to discuss a potential energy strategy. “As a big and growing part of the national economy, this is our chance to really make sure western voices and western views are reflected in the decisions that are taken in Ottawa and across the rest of the country, energy has to be apart of the discussion because that’s what we do here,” said Clark. Redford explains that the three premiers didn’t have any major disagreements because they are all working towards the same goal. “We didn’t really have any disagreements because where we are with the Canadian Energy Strategy is that it’s all about finding those areas where we can demonstrate opportunities for partnership and success, and some of those will be amongst our three provinces and also partnering with other provinces on some of those projects,” Redford said. She believes in working together in projects related, for example, to infrastructure, broader energy pieces, policies, and carbon reductions, the entire country will benefit from the success. “It’s all about this common theme, which is whether we’re talking about oil sands or gas or coal or hydro or whatever it might be, we’re apart of the integrated energy economy and what that means is that we all benefit from the success in all other parts of the country,” Redford said. Wall made it clear that the trio believe that they will be more successful approaching Ottawa together, than they would as individuals.

letters of support prove that there’s a huge need. Devereaux Elementary gets technical thanks to Murphy Oil By Jill Earl

idea of how much $25,000 is, the school has started a penny drive, with the goal of collecting 25,000 pennies. “The principal came up with the idea, because for kids to image how much the value of $25,000 is, it’s hard…she was trying to put a visual picture in their mind,” said Esau. Devereaux’s PAC are continuing to seek out sponsors, they hope to raise enough money to buy 20 more laptops by June.

DAWSON CREEK- The Ministry of Education advocates for 21st Century learning, which incorporates new technologies into the classroom. Thanks to a generous donation by Murphy Oil Corp., Devereaux Elementary in Arras will be able to provide these new technologies to their students. On Nov. 18, Murphy donated $25,000 to the school to buy new computer equipment: 10 iPads and 10 laptops will replace the 30 desktops Devereaux currently has. “This will hopefully enable our teachers to be more a part of that, and give them the opportunity to learn and know that they have the technology there,” said Leanne Esau, member of Devereaux’s Parent Advisory Committee. The PAC had been working on gathering sponsors since early September when they established there was a need for new computers in the school. Esau and the rest of the PAC members believe that their current computers are outdated. “We had a meeting in the fall, and every year we focus on a part of the school that needs improvement and this year we determined that technology at the school was really far behind. We decided that it would be a really good goal to go after funding to improve the technology department at our school,” said Esau. In the past Devereaux’s PAC have purchased an improved seating area and books for the library, gym equipment, a large rug and instruments for the music room, and a slide projector and sound system for the gym. “We do big projects,” Esau said. Esau has personally experienced the frustration students face when using the current desktop computers. “The teachers haven’t really had this opportunity before because the computers that we had, are just barely being supported because that’s how old they are. For example, I went in to the kindergarten/ grade one class and it took me 10/15 minutes just to help sign the kids all into the desktop, whereas with a iPad she can just set them into groups and they can just start working,” she said. On Friday, Nov. 18, Production Superintendent for Tupper West for Murphy Oil, Ken Paul, and Murphy’s Community Affairs Representative, Ron Podruzny made the cheque presentation to the school. To show their appreciation, Devereaux students gave Paul a plaque to hang in their office, and a signed mat to go in their head office in Calgary. During their visit, Paul explained the importance of technology to Murphy’s production Contributed photo plant in Tupper. He said that the plant they built is mostly run by computers, and that all the operators who work there are required to have very strong computer skills. “It gives them an idea of computers and their capabilities,” said Esau. The new computers are also expected to help two of Devereaux’s autistic students communicate more effectively. In order to give students an

Christmas Cards

I don’t know about you, but I like getting Christmas cards in the mail. It is fun to see who actually has your mailing address and remembered. I just sent out mine this week so I am hoping people will receive them on time to admire and enjoy. I found that making cards are kinda fun and this year I researched in to it a bit more. Self-made cards with goodwill verses have been sent, by hand or by post, for centuries. The first that’s recognizable as what we now think of as a Christmas card, i.e. a printed card sent by post, was sent at Christmas 1843. Sir Henry Cole, the founder of the London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, had sent many handwritten cards previously but that year he commissioned John Calcott Horsley to paint a card showing the feeding and clothing of the poor. “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You” was printed on the first Christmas card. Since then the billions of cards that have been sent almost all contain a printed verse. Many of these are culled from religious or sentimental texts, notably from Victorian authors such as Charles Dickens. I hope you get a chance to enhoy the season and here is a quote from Dr. Seuss to read over. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ‘till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more. - Dr. Seuss

Northern Health seeks partners for Day Treatment Addictions Recovery Program By Tracy McLellan Northern Health is currently seeking members of the Fort St. John community to participate in a new program to help individuals with substance misuse issues in Fort St. John. The program will use the Family Care Home Model, in which clients live in a room and board style environment instead of in a treatment centre. The client will attend day treatment programs and will be supported by the NH Mental Health and Addiction Services team. NH is looking for people in Fort St. John to take part in this pilot project by hosting one of the four clients chosen to participate in the pilot project. Currently, clients that need residential treatments have to leave Fort St. John to get the treatment they need. However, letting people access services in their home community means they’ll be able to stay in Fort St. John, plus receive treatment over a longer time frame with a consistent group of addictions care providers. Participants will have to meet some basic requirements; however they do not need to have any formalized training

in addictions management. The Supportive Recovery Bed Family Care Home provides a homelike atmosphere, meals and other housekeeping services, along with a caring surveillance and any required assistance with the activities of daily living. The care a client receives should be similar to that provided to a family member in a safe and caring environment. This type of system allows participating families get to make an impact on the most vulnerable members of their community and participants will receive financial compensation. Mental Health and Addiction Services in Fort St. John sees about 250 people per month, of whom 50 are new clients scheduling appointments. All of these people have different needs, therefore a range of alternatives are needed to provide services to these individuals. It is important to remember that not everyone requiring addictions help needs the same type of treatment, so being able to offer different types of support is necessary. The home care method will help meet these needs and that these individuals will be

able to not only fully recover from their challenges with additions, but can become productive members of society more quickly. It is essential to highlight that families willing to participate will be provided with appropriate supports. The client’s day treatment programs will help the clients develop skills to deal with the substance misuse; and Mental Health and Addictions Services will plan and scheduled other activities for them to attend. In terms of the families willing to supply this type of service, they will be supported through mental health and addiction services by having direct contact and regular meetings with the client’s case manager. Creating a Family Care Home Model in Fort St. John will have great benefits for the overall community, and more specifically the most vulnerable. For more information and to find out how you can get involved with this program please contact Connie Cunningham, Manager of Northeast Rural Mental Health and Addictions Services at 250-262-5259.

Say NO to the Site C Folly

Bottom line - smart meters work

Dear Editor, Campbell’s 2002 hydroelectric mandate, Neufeld’s Federal Senate posting and BC Hydro’s premature Site C business information sessions aim to make the Peace River Valley no part of Beautiful British Columbia. Past Premier Campbell had tunnel vision towards dam-generated electricity. In the Campbell government’s 2002 Energy Plan, BC Hydro was prohibited from creating any new power generation facilities, with the exception of Site C in the Peace River Valley, subject to the Cabinet approval. No thanks to this hydroelectric mandate, for the past ten years BC Hydro has focused valuable time and resources on research, planning and promotion of Site C while practically ignoring research into alternate forms of electricity such as wind, solar, geothermal and natural gas. In 2008, then BC Minister of Energy and Mines Richard Neufeld – a hard seller of Site C – was appointed as Senator in Ottawa. I believe that this posting was no more than a ploy to win Federal approval of Site C and to convince his Caucus that the project was good for Canada. In fact, if the battle to save the valley should be lost, there is a good chance that a very un sightly reservoir would be name Neufeld Lake (as Williston) and the dam itself Campbell Dam (as Bennett Dam). Now the BC government and BC Hydro are proceeding undemocratically with the Stage 3 Environment & Regulatory Review. In late November and early December, BC Hydro hosted information sessions (as far south as Vancouver) for businesses interested in bidding on portions of the project. According to BC Hydro’s commercial manager, BC Hydro is intending to put contracts into place for initial works as early as 2012. These actions were premature, for it is still two years before approval could even possibly be gained to go to Stage 4, Detailed Design & Procurement. Today, thanks to the private sector’s significant advancements in natural gas research, there is no economic sense in building an $8 billion dam (which would last merely 100 years at best) ruining a fertile valley and devastating an important ecosystem when the equivalent power ( and 300 years worth of it) can be generated by an investment of 41.2 billion in natural gas generation. We must all start thinking of tomorrow – not always today. We must preserve the picturesque and natural Peace River Valley: it is of upmost importance for generations of people to come. I firmly believe that Site C is a folly that can be stopped, especially with mounting opposition to its very unstable dam site; however, the handling of Site C is not correct government. We all, the people of this province, are advisors to the elected few who become our dictators. For the betterment of the public representatives and the good of the Peace River Valley, this has to change. It is my New Year’s wish that the government and BC Hydro will accept the mistake they have made, say NO to the Site C folly, and refocus their resources on alternative sources of electricity. Nick Parsons Farmington

Dear Editor: Much has been said about BC Hydro’s smart meter program. As frustrated as I am to hear some of the incredible misrepresentations of this program by its critics, I know for a fact that smart meters are another key investment to keep our electricity system more reliable, more cost effective and more efficient. Among their many benefits, smart meters will pave the way for new tools to help us better manage and conserve electricity in our homes, businesses and communities. I speak from experience. As BC’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources between 2001 and 2009, a key focus of mine was conservation. In 2006, BC Hydro launched the Conservation Research Initiative in a number of communities across the province, including my own in Fort St. John. The goal was to see if individuals could conserve more power by using smart meters. Participants were given a smart meter and a secure online portal to access their 30-day and 24-hour electrical consumption history. They could make adjustments to their usage as they saw fit, and save. The result? Overall consumption went down by more than seven per cent. Similar studies show that when you give people real-time information about their electricity use, they conserve by as much as 15 per cent. The bottom line- smart meters work. They reduce waste and save people money. Being “power smart” never goes out of style. Consider for a moment all the electronics in your home today compared with just a decade ago. And consider our growing population and growing economy. Over the next 20 years, electricity demand is expected to increase by 40 per cent. That’s like adding five more cities the size of Vancouver to our grid. For the last 50 years, through investments in hydroelectric dams, generating stations and transmission and distribution networks, BC Hydro has been powering our economy and contributing to our quality of life. Today, thanks to those visionary investments, people in this province still enjoy among the lowest electricity rates in North America. And they’ll continue to enjoy those low rates for generations to come. Why? Because BC Hydro continues to make important new investments to the electricity system, such as smart metering technology, to make it more efficient, more reliable and more cost-effective. Green New Year’s Resolutions - Tips from NEAT By Karen Mason-Bennett

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again!! At NEAT we are wrapping up our first attempt at 365 Green Living Tips on Twitter and starting to plan for the next 365! We, like you, have had a year of successes, challenges and lessons learned.

And now it’s time to look back, evaluate and resolve to live a healthier, greener year for 2012. Resolving to live a greener life can mean a lot of different things, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. We are predisposed to, ahem, neat ideas and here are a few of our favourites! Like the fearless Brent Hodson, giving up disposable coffee mugs is always a great place to start (and it saves you money too!) Eating locally at least one meal a week will go a long way to reduce your carbon footprint. Want to go a step further, choose organic meat and dairy products. The difference might surprise you. Be two faced. Use both sides of the paper at work and at home. Sign up for curbside recycling. The convenience will help make rinsing and sorting worthwhile, especially in the winter.

Plant a garden. Eating locally grown food is great, but shopping in your own yard is even better! Compost. Compost. Compost. If we say it anymore we’re gonna scream! Get a bin and put your veggies in there! It’s really that simple. (We even sell the bins! Just sayin!) If it’s less than three blocks, reduce your waist and save the air. Walk. Make the effort to check the energy consumption of appliances and gadgets you purchase. This may increase your cost initially but will save you over the life of the product. Read. The more you know about the environment the more you are able to make informed decisions that affect us all. As always, the Northern Environmental Action Team, wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a safe holiday season. Check our newsletter or neat.ca for Christmas Tree collection schedules in your municipality.

Developer seeks city funds By Kyla Corpuz

FORT ST. JOHN – A developer from G8 Properties asked the city for $8 million to service a retail hub waiting to be built. Marv Thielmann, G8 Properties, addressed city council on Dec. 12 proposing that the city invest in Station 44, a “power centre” for retail. “Basically we’re asking for a contribution to the city, not to the developer—to the development to your community,” said Thielmann. The investment comes by building the key intersection at 79 A Street and Alaska Highway, a portion of 79 A Street and the offsite sanitary and storm sewers required. But Mayor Lori Ackerman said the responsibility to complete the servicing of a site should be on the developer; making reference to Northern Health building the new hospital. “You’re familiar with our policies and where we’ve been moving ... 112 Avenue, just north of the hospital, was developed by Northern Health, they were the developers,” said Ackerman. “The province would be waiting for their reimbursement should we move forward with this.” If the city contributes to Station 44, it would open up the opportunity for other developers to seek funding from the city. “That would also be that the city contribute to every other developer for their subdivision,” said Ackerman.

9th Annual BC Natural Resource Forum

Marv Thielmann, G8 Properties, said during a city council meeting on Nov. 12 that an $8 million-contribution from the city for Station 44, would be an investment for the community.

Thielman stated that part of his reason for asking the city to contribute financially is because it would benefit from annual tax revenues. “The important consideration is that the annual tax revenues generated for the City by the entire Station 44 site at completion are projected to be $8,000,000,” according to a G8 Properties press release. In addition the annual retail spending by local residents is at approximately $1 billion, but Thielmann noted that residents aren’t spending it here, rather they’re going away to Grande Prairie or Edmonton. “Station 44 can be expected to relieve the retail shortage substantially and provide an excellent, well-planned shopping and service environment,” read the release. The retail centre would be ready for construction in 2012 given servicing costs are covered. Ackerman told Thielmann that council would request staff to do a presentation in the new year and a “more holistic” decision will be made. Station 44 would sit on a 50-acre lot along the Alaska Highway. It is meant to provide more shopping opportunities for locals.

Dawson Creek recreation challenge makes it to the North Pole By Jill Earl

DAWSON CREEK- The City’s Recreation department has put a challenge out to its residents this holiday season; to swim, walk, run, ski, skate, or climb to the North Pole. The challenge, Trek to the North Pole, started on Nov. 7 has garnered 243 participants as of Dec. 16, and will be open for sign up until Dec. 24 when the challenge ends. The Trek to the North Pole won’t require travel outside of the city, as the challenge issued to the community is just to exercise. Participants can choose their preferred physical activity and record when they did it and for how long. Participants keep track in provided booklets, that not only log how far they’ve traveled, but also converts their activities into kilometers. Participants can use the climbing wall, pool, or walking track to complete kilometers. It’s completely free to register for the challenge, and residents can register individually or in a group. Kilometers are tallied between all participants; individuals are not expected to exercise the equivalent of 3,818 km in 48 days. According to Chante Patterson Elden, Recreation Facili-

ties Manager with the City, collectively, challengers have made it to the North Pole and are now working their way back. Elden predicts that participants will far succeed challenge expectations. At the end of the challenge, the recreation department will be giving away prizes to those who took the challenge. Although Elden would not give specific details about the prizes, she does say that they will be promoting physical fitness themed. Though prizes are a nice incentive for residents to sign up, Elden says the main goal is to get the community active. “The key benefit is to encourage people to be active,” Elden said. She says another challenge will be issued in the new year.

Though Dawson Creek didn’t host a “Decked Out,” Christmas decorations contest as Fort St. John did, many residents of Dawson Creek have still chosen to display their holiday spirit on their front yard. The above residence on 116th Ave. showcases a nativity scene, Santa and his reindeer, and a big Merry Christmas sign. LIKE ALL GOOD THINGS, RECYCLE YOUR RIDE MUST COME TO AN END. RECYCLE YOUR RIDE IS ON ALL ACROSS CANADA — ONLY UNTIL JANUARY 3RD AND ONLY AT YOUR FORD STORE.

Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program is a great incentive for consumers looking to save on their next vehicle while responsibly recycling their old one. Since the program was first offered in 2009, Ford’s Recycle Your Ride program has retired more than 50,000 old vehicles. And now, in an effort to recycle even more, the program has been expanded to include 2005-model-year-or-older vehicles. So even more people can receive between $500 and $3000* in incentives towards purchasing or leasing our smartest, safest and most fuel-efficient Ford vehicles — like the Focus, Fusion and F-150, and even the award-winning Fiesta and Edge. Our goal is to replace as many older vehicles still on the road today with more fuel-efficient, lower-emission Ford cars, CUVs, SUVs and trucks. And you can help. If it’s time to recycle your ride, just visit any Ford Store across the country. But hurry, because Recycle Your Ride is only back for a limited time.

FORT ST. JOHN –A crowd of people waited in line at the North Peace Cultural Centre bus stop for Music That Moves You on Dec. 13. The annual music event takes passengers on a route through the city with live entertainment on board. “It’s free transit and gives people an opportunity to try it out and they also get exposed to live musicians, who are all local,” said Tara O’Donnell, community development coordinator. The attendance last Tuesday was successful. “We’ve had an unbelievable turnout this evening, every single bus ride has been completely full,” said O’Donnell.

New West

“It’s a very positive time in the west, there’s challenges certainly economically, there’s still dislocation and each of our governments are working hard to deal with those but to the extent we are net contributors to the country and want to be contributors to the country…to continue success in the west, we can do that individually…and maybe have some success but I like our chances if we’re talking about them together, if we’re going to Ottawa together and making a case for these things that are important not to just our economy but to the country’s,” said Wall. “I think that’s what’s exciting about today’s development, it’s really the next step to the New West Partnership,” he adds. Clark made it clear at the press conference that she would not take a formal position on the oil sands until the National Environmental Review process was complete. She said that once all the information is presented, then a discussion about the potential consequences and benefits would ensue. Clark also said that they need to think about how to maximize energy resources in an environmentally friendly way. “We need to move forward together, and be clear as Canadians that being Northeast a energy PUBLICATION: Newsproducing AD SIZE: 13.50” country is actually a good thing, it’s something that we should be proud of5.04” as xCanadians, and we AD COLOUR produce energy in all different kinds of ways,” Clark said. SPECTRA JOB “That’s the message that we want to take to Ottawa because I do think that we need to have a comprehensive national discussion about the benefits of producing energy and not just for British Columbians or Albertans or folks from Saskatchewan, but for all Canadians because it’s a benefit for the entire country,” she added. The New West Partnership came into effect July of 2010 and sees cooperation between B.C., Alta., and Sask. to boost the economy in those provinces. “I do think that western Canada, our three provinces have achieved something unique in this country, and created free trade between our provinces within our own country. We’re in a unique place in Canada now where as, where the western provinces have a real chance to step up in confederation, and that’s what our New West Partnership is about is finding prominent issues that we share and bringing them forward to the rest of the country and to Ottawa and making sure that we’re representing our citizens as well as we can by pulling each others’ weight together, this has been a great meeting in that respect,” said Clark.

Music on the bus

Musicians Adam Wynn and Joseph Te Bulte are usually seen playing together at church, but for the second time they were sharing tunes on the bus that got everyone in the Christmas spirit. “We just did lots of Christmas carols … everyone got involved and sang along, it was a great time,” said Wynn. Te Bulte added it was a good way to share the city’s transportation services. “It’s a good event for getting people to use our transit and packing a bunch of community people on a bus.” The City of Fort St. John, NPCC, BC Transit and Northern Groove teamed up to pull the event together. The other musicians who played were Lindsay Pratt and The Ramblers and The Alliance Church Community Choir lead by Kristal Chambers. The musical ride happens a couple of times a year said O’Donnell, with one being holiday themed.

The Dawson Creek Rotary Club hosted an Old Fashioned Christmas at the Pioneer Village on Dec. 12 and 13. There was not enough snow for a sleigh ride, but participants rode on horse drawn wagons around the village. Complimentary hotdogs, hot chocolate, and cookies, as well as a warm fire were enjoyed by attendees. Keith Brown and Fred Feddema roasted chestnuts that were also free to participants.

FORT ST. JOHN - Fort St. John’s premiere winter event, the High on Ice Winter Festival, is set for January 12 – 15, 2012. The featured event – the professional ice carving competition – brings in carvers from around the world to compete in British Columbia’s only sanctioned ice carving event. This year’s competition theme, Force of Nature, will surely inspire some icy masterpieces. In addition to the professional competition, some of the other highlights include an amateur ice carving competition, a snow sculpting event, sleigh rides, curling bonspiel, snowmobile group ride, ice fishing derby, pond hockey challenge, live entertainment, and the very popular ice slides will be back for another year. “Fort St John’s High on Ice festival has become an opportunity for the community to celebrate our winter season” said Mayor Lori Ackerman. The 2012 event schedule is full of activities both indoors and out. The ice carvings by the professionals differ every year and never cease to amaze us. This is something you do not want to miss!” High on Ice is a joint venture between the City of Fort St. John, Fort St. John Community Arts Council, and many other community groups and volunteers. For a full schedule of events, visit www.fortstjohn.ca.
