Trade Show 2012 Last year in his opening remarks Gene reminisced on where the last 40 years had gone. In this, my first year running the CKNL Trade Show my question is simply where have the last 3 months gone?! My name is Christina Hogarth and I am excited to introduce myself as the new manager of the 41st Annual CKNL Trade Show. I have been involved with the show the last nine years as a member of the Astral Radio team and the past two years I have worked closely with Gene to learn the ins and outs of the show in preparation for
Men’s League Meeting, Wednesday, April 17th 7pm. If you want to join or add a team be sure to attend.
Drive north on 86th street and you will come to our door.

his retirement. I am very excited to announce that 2013 is by far our biggest show to date. This year we have added over 30 additional booths to the show, which is the largest year-to-year increase we’ve had in this venue to date. We’ve got many fan favorites returning so you’ll be able to stock up on your favorite products as well as see some exciting new vendors from near and far. We’ve got some of our favourite concessions returning as well as all-new food vendors in our second-floor Food Court, all of which are great locally owned businesses. For the first time ever Science World is bringing their road show to the Peace and we’ve got some very exciting door prizes... especially if you’re an outdoor enthusiast! Pair all of this with the hundreds of fabulous businesses and service providers that are both returning and new to the show and I think you’re in for a great time. Overall, however, you’ll find that the tone and feel of the show haven’t changed. After all, if Gene was
able to create a show that has lasted 41 years, and started with just 30 exhibitors, why would I mess with such a great formula? But I wouldn’t have been able to do this show without the help of many great people. The team at Astral Radio has played a very important role in bringing this show together and I would be remiss if I didn’t thank them for their help. From management to sales, and on-air to accounting there are many people who have helped organize, coordinate and promote the show. But special thanks go out to Amy Binckli, Danice Martin, Christy Luft, Terry Shepherd, and the sales team of Amy Titley, Shawn Collins and Heidi Critcher. Your help and support in my first year of doing the show has been invaluable. And on that note—turn on the lights, put the finishing touches to the booths, start up the food and open the doors to the 41st Annual CKNL Trade Show! Bring your friends, bring your family, support all these wonderful businesses and above all, have a great time!

This year we are excited to showcase three new food vendors in our food court. Unfortunately some of our long term vendors including A&W and Peace Country Meats decided to take a break this year because as you can guess participating in the show, while still running a thriving business, is quite an endeavour. But we are excited to welcome three new vendors this year. First up is Saigon Noodles, also located in the Totem Mall in Fort St John. Their standard menu includes everything from pho soup to pad thai to lemon grass chicken wings—lots of flavour and lots of fun. This year Maggie and her staff will be serving up some of their fan favourites including salad rolls, spring rolls, dumplings and stir fried rice. We’ve also got Elegant Edibles out of Dawson Creek. Natasha and her staff will be providing healthy alternatives including fresh sandwiches, wraps and salads and baked goods. Thirdly we welcome Olio’s Pizzeria to the show. Olio’s opened up in Fort St John five years ago and quickly established themselves as inventive and delicious pizza makers. Owner Marilyn is always trying something new on her pizzas and we’re excited to see what selection of slices she’ll be bringing to the booth. Last but not least you’ll find perennial fan favourite
Yummy Doughnuts in the upstairs Food Court. Steve and his wife churn out doughnuts by the thousands all show long and it’s rare to pass by their booth when there isn’t a line. But their yummy sugar and cinnamon indulgences are not one to miss. The Food Court isn’t the only place to find great food. Sprinkled throughout the show you’ll find all sorts of fantastic treats to munch on. Swiss Style Nuts serves up fresh caramel corn, as well as all types of candied nuts and fudge. Temptations has refreshing fresh squeezed lemonade, hot dogs, sno cones, slushies and more. Tastebuds has a multitude of flavours of hard ice cream, cotton candy and more. You can’t miss Willy’s booth with its bright neon signs and you won’t want to miss out on his Elephant Ears, Chipstix, Poppy Seed Strudel and Poutine. Finally on the first floor you’ll also find locally owned business The Canadian Grind who are bringing their full espresso bar to the show for the second year in a row. Enjoy a hot latte, Americano, loose leaf tea and more while you stroll around the show and see everything there is to see. Bottom line is: the wise person would come to the show with an empty stomach because there are so many choices it will be hard to limit yourself to just one!

The Northern Lights Recovery Centre project is moving forward—and picking up steam The plan to build a 20-bed residential treatment centre in Northeastern BC for those with drug or alcohol addictions is being supported by a wide spectrum of area politicians, business, industry and First Nations. The non-profit society spearheading the effort is now working to find land suitable for building the facility, estimated to cost more than $5 million. “There have been many hoops to jump through but we’re getting there,” said board chairman Bruce Lantz, adding that if land can be purchased soon then construction could start as early as this Spring.
Lantz also said the society is seeking to expand its membership base, and will be selling $20 memberships at their booth at the CKNL Trade Show this year. “It’s important to show that we have broad support in the region and a strong membership list shows government and potential funders that we have that support,” he explained. The facility will offer treatment programs delivered by trained counsellors in 28-day, 42-day and 60-day segments, with extensive aftercare programs to reduce the risk of relapse. The cost is expected to start at about $7,300 for the shortest program, which compares very favourably

with other rograms offered in BC and Alberta. The initiative was prompted by the realization that, while Northeastern BC has significant problems with drug and alcohol abuse, people seeking treatment have had to travel great distances to find help, often encountering long waiting lists and high costs. For more information, contact Bruce Lantz at 250-2648888 or info@nlrecovery.ca.

By presenting science outside of the classroom and the lab – and by making it fun and relevant – they aim to not only educate, but also to inspire an appreciation and enthusiasm for science. Their demonstrations focus on aspects of science that everyone can relate to: curiosity, experimentation & observation.” Special thanks to Spectra Energy who partnered with us last year to bring Safari Jeff to the show and came on board this year again, enabling us to bring what we are sure will be a very exciting and educational show to the event.

For the last seven years The Bear, Sun FM and 890 CJDC have hosted an annual Radiothon every April to raise funds for the Fort St. John and Dawson Creek Hospital Foundations. In seven years the three radio stations have collectively raised over $395,000 dollars – every penny of which has been given to the Foundations to purchase much needed equipment, much of it in the maternity wards. Over the years the funds raised have gone towards purchasing things like Radiant Warmers, Wireless Baby Heart Monitors, Birthing Beds, Newborn Vein Viewers and more. This year’s 2013 Radiothons will once again be turning to the people of the Peace Region and asking them to generously donate to help purchase Children’s Furniture in Fort St. John and equipment for the Maternity Ward in Dawson Creek. This year’s Radiothons are taking place on Thursday April 25th at Safeway in Fort St. John and the Dawson Creek Co-op Mall in Dawson. Sun FM and 890 CJDC will be broadcasting live on location from 6am to 6pm so stop in and make a donation or call in to pledge. At the trade show exhibitors who would like to have their booth talked about during Sun FM and The Bear’s live broadcasts can do so for a small fee – 100% of which will go towards the Radiothon fund. It’s a great way to promote your business while also helping fundraise for a very worthy cause. If anyone would like to make an individual donation to the Radiothon, please stop by the Bear & Sun FM Booth #267 on the second floor and you’ll be able to do so. Let the guys and gals in the booth know who you are and what it means to you to donate and 250-785-9099 you might even hear your 9422 100th Street, Fort St. John B.C. name live on the radio!

AT THE TRADE SHOW
Meet your local non-profit organizations Although when one thinks trade show the mind often gravitates first towards products that are for sale, services that are offered, and food you want to eat, of equal importance are the large variety of non-profit organizations that participate in the show every year. Non profit organizations often struggle to gain awareness for their causes and initiatives as they operate on low to non-existent budgets and often don’t have offices and storefronts where they can gain visual awareness. So an event like this, with its large volume of people through the doors in a short amount of time, can create valuable face time between non-profits and potential new supporters and volunteers and people who need the services they provide. So as you walk around the show this year make sure you keep your eyes open and learn about some of the great local organizations that exist in our community and the valuable services they provide. Perhaps you might find one that you would like to support either with a donation or with your time. Some of this year’s non-profit organizations this year include: Family Friendly Coalition - Brings together a variety of different Not for Profit Groups that work with children, provide community services and more. They will also be promoting their website Familyfriendlycommunity.ca which aims to create awareness for family activities around the Peace Region. See them in Booth #I on the second floor. Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society – Will be promoting “The Peace Project which is a three year initiative to help reduce violence against women and girls in Fort St. John and improve the social health and well being of the community – visit thepeaceprojectfsj.com. See them in Booth #N on the second floor. North Peace Search & Rescue – When requested, volunteer Search and Rescue teams are available to support Ground Search and Rescue Activities throughout the Peace Region. All members receive search training with some trained in specialized disciplines including Rope Rescue, Tracking and Swiftwater and Ice Rescue and HETS. To learn more, visit them in Booth #Q on the second floor. Fort St. John Hospital Auxilary – They will be selling tickets for their annual Spring Raffle which raises funds for the Hospital Association. To buy tickets visit them on the first floor in Booth #35. Fort St. John Public Library – They will be providing information on the Library’s digital services, outreach services, and in-library services. They will have a variety of technology displays to view as well. They’re located in Booth #338 on the second floor. BC Senior Games – They will be providing information on the BC Senior Games, as well as information on upcoming senior functions and activities that will be available in the local area. Raffle tickets will also be available for sale. They’re located in Booth #7

Family Friendly Coalition was just one of the many nonprofit organizations found at the Trade Show. on the first floor. North Peace SPCA – The mission of this great organization is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in the North Peace. They will be located on the second floor in Booth #P and will be promoting their animal adoption centre and raising funds with raffles and giveaways. North Peace Pregnancy & Care Centre – They offer support to women with a crisis pregnancy and families with young infants. They have counselors that can meet with you and provide all the information you need to make an informed decision. The NPPCC is staffed by trained peercounselors and believe in providing information to you in a compassionate, non-judgmental way. They are not a medical facility and do not offer medical advice, counsel or services. They can be found in Booth #C on the second floor.
