The Northeast News
~ still committed to being your connection to the Northeast The Northeast News is working hard to provide its readers with the best product and coverage of what’s happening in the Northeast. With seven staff in our offices, located in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, combining years of experience in the industry to those that can’t resist the appeal of being involved with media, the paper is here to serve the people—our readers and our advertisers. “There is an overwhelming sense of connection to the community from being part of the Northeast News for over eight years,” says publisher Brenda Piper. “We provide news coverage for the entire Peace region and a place for companies to advertise, which makes us a key player in northeast B.C.’s newspaper industry.” What’s even better is, just like when we were formed back in April 2004, the paper
continues to run as an independent. Owner Robert Doull said this remains an important aspect because it allows the Northeast News to continue to respond more immediately to local situations, whether it’s by making a donation to a charitable group in the area or covering important issues. Good 2 Go Shoes & Frolic Two stores that go hand in hand
Troy McRae always enjoyed the retail industry and knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur, so in May 2003 he opened up Good 2 Go Shoes on 100 Street. Good 2 Go Shoes carries an array of footwear. Their shoe selection ranges from hip and funky heels from the likes of Jessica Simpson and Kenneth Cole to sophisticated brands like Nine West and Miz Mooz. The store also carries Skechers, for those who are ‘on-the-go’; and an assortment of handbags to match whatever style you choose. The men’s footwear has quite the variety as well, from red snakeskin dress shoes to casual Timberlands and Hush Puppies. In addition, Good 2 Go Shoes also carries shoe-care products.

Troy says, “There’s a bit of something for everyone.” Eight years later Troy saw the need for another store, this time to house the wardrobe pieces that just didn’t have room in his existing store. In July 2011, him and his two staff members: Connie Eby and Naomi Shore opened up, Fort St. John’s latest boutique, Frolic. Frolic has since flourished with hangers that adorn brand names such as Lady Dutch, Lucca Couture, BB Dakota, Tulle, Skunkfunk and most recently Project Runway Canada’s Lucien Matis. Not only are the clothing lines priced affordably, there’s something for every occasion. Whether you’re looking for a bold summer print, office attire or a fun and flirty dress for a night out in town—Frolic is the answer to finding good brand names, fashion forward trends and ready-to-wear clothes. Their accessories consist of Betsey Johnson’s bold statement necklaces and arm candy such as watches and charm bracelets, leggings and tights, scarves, sunglasses and cosmetic products by MOR and all natural fragrances by BSQ. Fort St. John Curling Club
The Fort St. John Curling Club
Grade 7 students learn to slide during the Grade 7 Junior Program.
In August of 1946, planning started to take place for a curling club in Fort St. John. The new building was completed in 1947, at the corner of 102 St and 98 Ave. This three sheet building housed the club until 1960 when a six sheet facility was built at the club’s current location. Unfortunately in June 1978 the building burnt to the ground with few salvageable items. The volunteers of the Fort St. John Curling Club went to work raising funds and organizing another building to be built. The new building officially opened December 7, 1979 and is the building the Fort St. John Curling Club still uses. With over 350 members, the Club hosts four league nights and an open drop-in night. We also host the Fort St. John Petroleum Associationís Oilmenís Bonspiel, a Cash Spiel, Menís & Ladies Bonspiels and the Mukluk Bonspiel in conjunction

with the High-on-ice Winter Festival. “It’s important for us to grow the game of curling, that’s why after reading about a free drop-in night taking place in southern BC, I went to the executive and we instituted it,” said general manager Ryan Harvey, “it gets people out here, learning the game and having tremendous amounts of fun in the process.” Another area of growth we’ve seen is in our junior program. Last year we had 42 participants, which is an increase of about 30 juniors over two years. The Club in partnership with School District 60 has created a grade 7 junior program, which has seen approximately 700 students get introduced to the sport of curling over the past two years. It’s a great program that was started to introduce the students to the game. Hopefully we can grow it into a junior or intermural league; that is our goal. The Club is also a great place to host weddings, meetings, parties, tradeshows and conferences. With a banquet hall that can hold up to 220 people, a great dance Curler delivers stone at the 2010 Rhyason Contracting, Tidy floor and caTrucking & Fort Motors Cash Spiel tering, they are sure to make your next function a success. Fort Motors, Fort St John’s oldest dealership, was open by Wally and Opal Gentles on Jan. 2, 1961 on 100 Street. Its present, larger location opened in November 2006. One thing that did not change was the family connection. Brian, the youngest son of Wally and Opal, bought the business from his parents in 1993. The family connection continues with multiple families that work for the business from multiple generations to parents and children. Gentles said a number of employees have remained with the business for so long because they, like him, believe in the Ford product. Fort Motors has seen a lot of changes over the years, and one of the most recent was the hiring of a General Manager and Partner, Bud Williamson. Bud and his wife Lisa have three children, originally from Wetaskiwin, Alta., will become very involved in the community. Bud has been in all aspects of the car business for 24 years and 12 of those years were spent as a General Manager/Partner. “I believe in truth, integrity and positive teamwork, with a focus on customer satisfaction,” said Bud. “My philosophy is to first look after your staff. Happy employees care about the dealership and will look after our customers with care.” Bud focuses on two things: continued growth by completely satisfying their customers in sales and services and remaining competitive. “We want our community to deal locally, and we can’t expect that if we are not competitive.” It’s a very exciting time to be a Ford dealer said Bud. For the second year straight, Ford Motor Company has been the highest volume manufacturer in Canada. In addition they also have the highest market share. “Our products are rated as the best built and most fuel efficient in the industry and our customers are noticing.” Bud is happy to see that Fort Motors has strong ties to the community and that many have remained loyal to the company throughout the years. “It’s important to give back to the community that has supported Fort Motors for the last 50 years.” For more information on Fort Motors go to www.fortmotors.ca or drop by 11104 Alaska Road North, Fort St John. 250-785-6661

Northern Auto Electric Ltd. has been in business to serve since 1994. Over those years, the services the company offers have expanded greatly.
Nathan Enns and Daren Donszelmann are just a few of the employees at Northern Auto Electric. They can service from three to 10 vehicles a day. Missing from the photo is John Hart.

Northern Auto Electric
‘Electrying’ the Northeast since 1994 Specializing in electrical repairs, Northern Auto Electric has served the automotive needs of customers throughout the region for more than 18 years. Doris Donszelmann said they draw upon the expertise and equipment at the shop to do repairs that a lot of other shops can’t do. That includes running diagnostics (tests) on electrical systems or reprogramming (reflash) onboard computers (which can sometimes fix transmission problems), improve gas mileage, correct false trouble codes and other problems. “We’re looking at on-board computers, lights, electric windows, electric door locks, we repair all of that,” said Donszelmann. “It’s a specialty, a lot of shops don’t even want to touch electrical work. You have to understand programming. A vehicle consists of one main computer module, and then maybe 50 to 100 modules underneath that. We have all the programming and equipment to be able to do that kind of stuff, and a lot of people don’t.” Northern Auto Electric started off rebuilding starters and alternators, but has built up an inventory of automotive parts over time and has since become Auto Sense. They carry all kind of parts, including some heavy-duty parts like VMACs (vehicle-mounted air compressors) and what they don’t have they order. The repair shop services and installs Webasto and Proheat engine pre-heaters, inverters and legal driving lights approved by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Doris said they work on all makes and models. “We also work on RVs, holiday trailers, motorhomes … most of their problems are usually electrical.” Doris and Peter, the owners of Northern Auto Electric. When the previous shop he worked at closed, the couple decided to start their own business, which was incorporated in 1994.
Almost 10 years later they moved into their current location, a 2,800-square foot shop at 10215 94 Avenue. They currently employ seven people, including four service technicians and one parts person. Peter has been doing this for 33 years and Daren has been in the field for eight years,” said Doris. “It’s very valuable to have that kind of experience.” Northern Auto Electric serves customers from Chetwynd to Fort Nelson and even some in Alberta. They see anywhere between three to 10 vehicles a day, depending on the size of the job. About half of their business is serving oilfield companies where they perform changeovers of things like lights, pilot signs and methanol tanks from old trucks to new trucks. Interestingly enough, eight years ago Doris and Peter’s children had an idea to carry paintball and air soft supplies, including markers, masks and more at Northern Auto Electric. Northern Auto Electric can be reached at (250) 785-5710.

Many of the jobs we fill are for field operators, camp cooks, warehouse personnel and office staff. When a company calls looking for a specialized skill set we check our files to see if we have any qualified resumes.” Macenna’s office is on the 2nd floor above the post office on 101st Ave. They are open from Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm, candidates Paul Jackson, HR Assistant, Michelle McArthur, payroll/accounting, Megan Brooks, can apply in person or online at www.macenna.com. receptionist, Dianne Young, HR co-ordinator, and Leanne McArthur, owner and manager.

Homesteader Health ~ Focused on your health
When Steve Brousson, owner of Homesteader Health, was 15 his mother was told she had cancer. Her survival is what prompted him to start a business that focused on healthy foods and lifestyle. When Brousson’s mother was first diagnosed some of their choices of treatment were surgery and switching to a new diet that consisted of herbs and vitamins; but even with the surgery the prognosis was not great. So, his parents turned to the latter of the cures and his mother went on to live for another 25 years. “That is what gave me an understanding and belief that plants can, in many cases, have a major impact on our health,” said Brousson. Homesteader Health is Fort St. John’s ‘healthy lifestyle store’ for the health-conscious person. It is a one-stop shop where you can check off items on your grocery list that cater to your well-being. They provide everything
from vitamins and homeopathic remedies to organic produce and dairy, beauty products and eco-cleaning supplies. In addition, their business stands out because of the staff who are knowledgeable and friendly. They are there to serve their customers with tips and advice when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle, because not only does the staff at Homesteader Health preach healthy living—they live it, too. Some of their staff assets are in preparing raw foods. In turn this has given them a loyal clientele. Steve Brousson and his wife Trish are committed to serving the community, and especially their family, by providing healthy choices that lead to balanced way of life. Steve has his Bachelors in Science and is a Registered Nutritional Consultant. In 1989 him and his wife took over Homesteader Health in Fort St. John. They are currently located at the Energetic City’s Co-op Mall. They have since branched out into two other cities, with two stores in Grande Prairie and one in Prince George. Their slogan “Feel good…for life!” expresses their philosophy in a nutshell: “We are interested in a lifetime of good health for our customers, not just short term fixes.”

The Dawson Creek Mall 35 Years and Going Strong The Dawson Creek Mall opened for business June 2, 1977. Originally started by Towne Center Mall Ltd. as “Dawson Mall”, the mall was the largest commercial developments in the city’s history. We opened with wall to wall people and drew shoppers from all over the Peace Region. The mall opened with 38 stores including K-mart, Safeway, and Shopper’s Drug Mart as its biggest tenants, and even had a Toronto Dominion Bank on the premises. In 1977, the mall’s Safeway store was the largest of its kind north of Edmonton. Additionally, Shopper’s is the only store that has been opened for the entire life of the mall. Last year you saw that Shoppers expanded and relocated within the mall in order to serve their growing customer needs. The Dawson Creek Mall is proud to say that we have a long list of employee’s that have been working in the
mall for over 30 years. Gail Bull and Sharon Smith are two employees that have been with the mall even before the doors opened to the public and helped to set up the K-mart store. Gail has stayed with K-mart/Zellers her entire employment, while Sharon helped set up the camera department in K-mart and went on to purchase Kit’s Camera’s renaming it Rainbow Studios. The mall’s new owners have spent over $5 million to make improvements to the mall over the last year and a half and expect to continue investing to improve the development. We are working diligently to bring you new retailers to the Zeller’s space later this year and are excited about the mall’s future. We are working hard to provide the community with bigger and better things from this location! Stay tuned! For more information on the Dawson Creek Mall, visit them online at www.dawsoncreekmall.com.

Murray GM
Murray GM ~ Our Reputation is Your Guarantee “My very first job was pumping gas at Murray’s Garage in Souris Manitoba when I was 14 years old. I’d already been hanging around the pumps, washing cars and changing tires for a couple of years,” says Murray GM General Manager Clark Lang. Murray’s Garage in Souris opened its doors in 1926. “My father was the Service Manager and I began selling vehicles in 1975, in my early 20s. I soon became the Sales Manager, looked after the entire vehicle orders and personally delivered almost 200 vehicles per year!” recalls Lang. It was during the 1990’s that the Brandon based Murray Group made a corporate decision to expand into the western provinces, beginning with Saskatchewan, Alberta and then British Columbia with Fort St. John being the first B.C. dealership in 1999. Lang and his wife Judy were immediately attracted to the people and to the natural surroundings of the Peace region; and to this day, they still appreciate what the area has to offer. They saw Fort St. John as a place with great opportunity to be in the auto business. When they acquired the dealership, they knew they would have to build a new building. After two short years in business, construction began on the existing dealership, which would provide a total of 30 service stalls. Not only has the building
and inventory expanded, the staff has grown from 28 to 68 people. Although they’ve experienced growing pains along the way, they are now in a position to offer the type and quality of service that is required and deserved by customers. “All the car companies are building great vehicles today but what sets our business apart from competitors are our people and our commitment to Fort St. John and the surrounding area,” says Lang. “We like to think of ‘our people - our staff ’ as friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We are proud of the fact that over the years we have built a sense of loyalty within.” Murray GM has earned the People’s Choice Best Automotive Dealership Award eleven times out of the past dozen years and the Energetic City’s Best Automotive Dealership Award. In addition they have received letters of recognition or recommendation, which are accolades they don’t take lightly. As General Manager of Murray GM, Lang strives to be community minded. He encourages his staff to take up coaching duties, pursue career development and step into leadership roles during their spare time—and he leads by example. Lang is the president of the Rotary Noon Club, associate member of Oilmen’s and an avid hockey player, golfer and curler. People that visit Murray GM often remark that there is a sense of community, support and commitment within the dealership. The Murray Group includes 24 dealerships across Canada. Though each is individually owned and operated the philosophy to deliver great, reliable service remains the same throughout. After all, the collective motto, ‘Our reputation is your guarantee’ is taken seriously.
