Grizfest gets lucky lineup By Kyla Corpuz

TUMBLER RIDGE – Last year, pop sensations Down With Webster and Fefe Dobson took the stage at Grizfest. This year it will see the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen, Fred Penner, Harlequin, Emerson Drive and more. Grizfest coordinator Joy McKay said they “lucked out” with securing Jepsen, who’s credited for the catchy tune ‘Call Me Maybe’, which has also placed her at number-one in numerous countries. “Every year we seem to luck out getting somebody and bang, they win all these awards,” said Mckay, adding that they got Jepsen in the lineup before she really took off to stardom. “Well, she was on her way to getting there but it was before she won those last three awards.” Jepsen snagged three titles at the 2012 Much Music Video Awards early this year. McKay explained how a small town like Tumbler Ridge is able to attract bigger names. Since Grizfest started 11 years ago, by the Tumbler Ridge Days Society, it has built its operating funds. “Lots of businesses come out and sponsor, so we’re able to secure better known acts.” Over the last two years Grizfest has grown, quadrupling its attendance. “We’ve had close to 2,500 walk through the gates each day. When it first started, we were probably lucky if there were 500.” Grizfest started as a way to keep the community alive. “Way back when the town was closing, all the mines were pulling out,

the Society wanted to do something that would bring people to the community, and so they started Grizfest,” said McKay. When the Quintette mine shut down, many people left town and there was a big real estate sale where houses were selling for “really cheap”, said McKay. “They did it to promote tourism to Tumbler Ridge,” she added—and it seems to be working. “You betchya, yeah it promotes [tourism], lots of people come as far away as Prince George and even further, so it’s really made a boost for the community for sure.” Grizfest takes place at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School field, below the downtown core, near restaurants and hotels. Asides from the music Grizfest has to offer, a slo-pitch tournament will run from Aug. 4 to Aug. 6 and the Tumbler Ridge Golf and Country Club will hold a golf tournament from Aug. 4 to Aug. 5. Helicopter rides from across the medical centre will also be available on Aug. 5 for $75 a person, as well as a pancake breakfast on the weekend. “We have a children’s section, that has bouncy castles and games, a parade on the Saturday … and all the different vendors that come out that sell everything from handcraft jewelry and cosmetics,” added McKay. In addition, the festival will also hold Battle of the Bands on Aug. 3. The winner will then have the opportunity to open up the music festival on Aug. 4 at 12:30 p.m. The Grizfest musical festival runs from Aug. 4 to 5.

Air Canada announces lower fares and more flights to Vancouver Photo Brent Hodson

An Air Canada flight on the tarmac at North Peace Regional Airport prepares for the flight to Vancouver.

Photo Brent Hodson

Air Canada staff including Alex Belzick, Linda Schwab, Amber Hipkiss and Dayna Stickel at the North Peace Airport were part of the feedback Air Canada took in to consider its new fares. By Brent Hodson Fort St. John – A letter campaign was started a few months back where Fort St. John residents sent letters to Air Canada requesting for cheaper fares between Fort St. John and Vancouver. At the Energy Services Energy Expo held in May, Darren Thomson of the Fort St. John Airport Services Development Committee was there to launch the letter writing campaign. With the potential for some return flights to Vancouver to get as high as $2,800 with taxes, the price of flights became a concern for the committee. With high fares, letters from the oil and gas sector, and per-

sonal letters were sent to Air Canada’s head office. A response has been given by Air Canada to one of those letter writers. In the letter provided below, you will see that Air Canada has recently created a new fare level for flights from Fort St. John to Vancouver. With this new fare level, the flight will now cost flyers $249 (excluding taxes) one way. This fare is $50 higher than the lowest Grande Prairie fare. In an interview with Air Canada spokesperson Angela Mah, Air Canada feels this news is great for Fort St. John. “We review on a regular basis, all of our routes throughout our worldwide network to ensure that we have the right number of flights at the right times, with the appropriate sized aircraft to meet the demand in the marketplace in both directions.” said Mah. “We also take the community feedback into consideration during this process and as a result of this, including what we heard from the community (including the Jazz employees, the airport authority, travel agents and frequent flyers), we added a fifth flight from Fort St. John to Vancouver in May which represented a 25 per cent increase in flights and seat capacity.” With what Air Canada has heard, they decided to adjust Vancouver fares to make them competitive with fares offered out of Grande Prairie. In their ongoing review, they saw more demand for point-to-point travel to Vancouver and demand for connecting flights to Vancouver to other locations such as Calgary, Victoria and Toronto. Mah said they will continue to review both the fares and the schedules in Fort St. John as they continue their ongoing review

to ensure fares and schedules are aligned across the market. When asked about whether Air Canada will consider direct flights to Alberta including stops in Edmonton or Calgary, Mah stated that they evaluate new routes frequently, and look at demand in both directions, aircraft availability and other economic factors such as the price of oil. As of yet, they have not made any decisions on new routes.

Fair Pharmacare

MLA Report By Pat Pimm Peace River North MLA Today I want to talk to the constituents of Peace River North about a program for British Columbians called Fair PharmaCare. I have talked to many seniors and others in the community who are unaware of the details about Fair PharmaCare, so I will try to explain the details here. Fair Pharmacare assists families with the costs of prescription medication. Under the program, families pay full prescription costs until a level known as a deductible is reached. Once you reach your deductible, PharmaCare begins assisting you with your eligible costs for the rest of the year. Everybody in B.C. is eligible for Fair PharmaCare, but you must apply to receive the benefits. The deductible and the maximum amount that you will have to pay for prescription medication are based on your family’s net income. There is no deductible at all for families with a net income of less than $15,000 per year; there is a deductible of 2% of net income for families that earn between $15,000 and $30,000 per year; and there is a deductible of 3% of net income for families that make over $30,000 per year. There is also an enhanced Fair PharmaCare program for families with family members born before 1940. For these families, there is no deductible for any families with a net income of less than $33,000 per year, a deductible of 1% of net income for families that earn $33,000 to $50,000 per year, and a deductible of 2% of net income for families that make over $50,000 per year. There are also maximum amounts that families pay for medication. Again, this amount is based on net family incomes. On the regular Fair PharmaCare program, the maximum amount is 2% of net income for families that earn less than $15,000 per year, 3% of net income for those who earn between $15,000 and $30,000 per year, and 4% of net income for those who make over $30,000 per year. The enhanced PharmaCare program has maximum amounts as well. These maximums are 1.25% of net income for families

who make less than $33,000 per year, 2% of net income for those who earn between $33,000 and $50,000, and 3% of net income for those who make $50,000 or more per year. Fair PharmaCare ensures that no family in British Columbia pays more than 4% of their net family income for eligible drug

costs. I know this is a little confusing with lots of details and numbers, but the important message I want the people of Peace River North to hear is that we do have a program to help you with your prescription drug purchases. Our office would be more

Still Thinking about a Vegetable Garden? Take the Garden Test By The Charlie Lake Conservation Society With all the uncertainties within our food source, many individuals and families are returning to the backyard vegetable garden in search of a safer and more nutritional alternative to healthy eating. A perfect example being our gracious neighbour to the south, Michelle Obama finding a little spot south of the White House to plant lettuce and veggies to feed her family and friends! If you’re among those who’ve procrastinated long enough to avoid this year’s harvest, now is the perfect time to prepare a garden plot to enjoy the following year. Besides, planning a year in advance will not only save you time, you’ll be able to concentrate on next spring’s planting and the entire experience will be effortless and more enjoyable for all. Just take the following “Garden Test” to discover if a

backyard garden is right for you and your family: 1. What garden tools do you have? 2. How much do you spend on vegetables per week at the grocery store? 3. How much yard space are you willing to give up? 4. How much time do you have to devote to a garden? 5. How is the quality of the soil? 6. What does soil need to make it fertile? 7. How often should you water your garden? 8. When is the best time to water your garden? If you’re still reading, you’re ready to start digging! Think small at first and because we live in the north, choose a location that has full sun. A raised bed appears to be the best choice for the Peace Region gardeners. The soil tends to warm up earlier for planting and we benefit from a longer growing season that in return produces higher yields. Suggested sizes for the raised garden beds range between 4’X 8’ to 4’X12’ with a rooting zone of at least 12 inches (30cm). Cedar wood and rock appear to be the best choice for beds and avoid creosote

treated lumber or pressure treated lumber that has been treated with a chemical fungicide. Make sure to break up and loosen the soil in the garden area at least 8” (20cm) beneath the bed before adding the beds and topsoil. The soil in our region is predominantly clay and vegetables grown in clay generally taste better and hold more minerals. Too often though, the problem lies in too much clay and therefore, peat moss, compost and manure needs to be added. Well rotted livestock manure, steer or sheep, is best for getting a clay or sandy loam into shape. A good gardener’s rule of thumb is that your garden needs an inch (25mm) of rain once a week and that your garden should be watered early morn or late evening only. *Note that a raised garden bed will dry out more quickly Start your gardening today so that next year you can experience the joy of eating fresh, crisp vegetables you grew yourself! Fort St. John RCMP Remind Drivers To Slow Down When You See Orange By Cpl. Jodi Shelkie, Crime Prevention Unit There will be a lot of construction zones throughout Fort St. John this summer. Be safe and avoid an expensive Violation Ticket by obeying these simple rules: Know the work zone signs. Orange warning signs are there to help you and other drivers move safely through roadway construction zones. Obey flaggers. Flaggers are trained to move traffic safely through work zones, so pay attention to their direction.

Obey posted speed limits. Speeding through work zones is a major cause for accidents and injuries. Pay attention for reduced speed limits and slow down. Remember, traffic fines double in construction zones. Pay attention to other drivers and objects. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and traffic barriers, trucks, construction equipment and workers. Stay focused and avoid distractions. Do not use cell phones or text while driving. Twin Peaks gear up to hit the road By Kyla Corpuz

FORT ST. JOHN – I remember when I first heard Twin Peaks, before they were Twin Peaks— just Naomi Shore and Lindsay Pratt. They played for the first time as a duet opening for Jenny Jarnagin at the Lido, raising funds for the Women’s Resource Centre. After the show I approached Shore, and asked her, “Have you guys recorded yet?” While I’m sure she was flattered by my question, she looked at me with confusion, shook her head and replied: “No, not at all. It’s really expensive...but hopefully one day!” That was a year ago, and now they’re getting ready to hit the road for their first tour, equipped with a six-song EP and brand new merchandise. Twin Peaks will begin their month-long tour at The Lido, the venue that hosted their first-ever show and where they won first place at RocKIN the Peace. Special guests Tall Cans (who will be accompanying the girl duo on tour), Barracudas and Folky Strum Strum, will all take the stage on Jul. 20 at 7 p.m. for the Twin Peaks Album Release and Tour Kick-off Extravaganza. For independents artists, getting to the touring stage doesn’t come easy—but for Shore and Pratt it seemed inevitable. “Right before RocKIN the Peace we wrote our first song together, just so we could enter RocKIN the Peace,” said Shore. “And then we won RocKIN the Peace, and won the money and recorded the album and it all just kind of happened, and snowballed.” It may have also helped that Pratt had plans to tour with Tall Cans (Mitch Vinet) before the inception of Twin Peaks.

From fall programs at Radar Lake that included canoe instruction, fireside lunch, and interpretative hikes; to winter snowshoeing and skiing. “They’re there, they’re in the moment, it’s something that is totally naturally for our kids to get out, go explore, get their Facial aesthetics Facial aesthetics hands dirty and actually parIsabel Leeuwner Medical Botox Isabel eeuwner ticipate in L their learning,” said Medical Botox [Your T itle] Cosmetic Botox [Your Title] Booker. Twin Peaks Tour Continued from Page 8.

“Him and Lindsay went to school together, and so they were both going to tour together and play some stuff they played in school together and original material and then all this Twin Peaks stuff happened,” said Shore, with Pratt chiming in: “It just all made sense.” “So now it’s the Twin Peaks and Tall Cans tour,” said Shore. Shore and Pratt have spent the last couple of months organizing a line up of 16 shows from Alberta to the interior of B.C. and back up to the north.

Shore noted it’s been a process setting up the tour. “I understand now why people have agents.” “I think now-a-days the scene is very independent, and people are booking their own shows,” said Pratt. Besides the worry of the Trailblazer—the honorary tour bus—breaking down, Pratt and Shore said playing in new cities seems intimidating. “Because here we have such great support because we’re known locally,” said Pratt. “Talking to other musicians … they keep telling us like, ‘Okay guys, your hometown … that’s not the real world, that’s not how real people actually feel about you,” said Shore between laughs. “But that’s what I’m most excited about.” “To win people over,” continued Pratt. “Like actually create a fan base outside of Fort St. John and family,” Shore added. While most artists hit the big cities to establish a name for them, the two credit their opportunity to pursue music to small-town living and a “good support network.” “If we were in Vancouver, this probably wouldn’t be going so well,” said Pratt. Shore and Pratt refer to each other as “soul sisters,” who finish each other’s sentences, and following each other’s lead on stage. campaign. RCMP are reminding drivers that consequences to breaking the law by drinking and driving can be very severe for first-time offenders and reoccurring offenders. “Many lives are lost due to fatalities from impaired drivers in British Columbia every year,” states an RCMP release. In addition to putting lives in danger, impaired drivers also puts their driving privileges and bank accounts at risk. First-time offenders can face up to $600 in fines. Blowing 0.05 on a breathalyzer is enough to have your vehicle taken away along with impaired driving suspensions. If blood concentration is in the ‘Warn’ range, there is an immediate $200-fine, three-day driving prohibition and vehicle impoundment, as well as a $250-drivers licence reinstatement fee. A second offence calls for an immediate driving ban for seven days, $300-fine, vehicle impoundment. A third offence is followed by 30 days without a vehicle or driving privileges, a $400-fine, and enrolment in the Responsible Drivers Program, which cost $880. In addition, an Ignition Interlock is installed for one year and a driver’s license reinstatement fee of $250. For more severe cases, if blood alcohol concentration is in the ‘Fail’ range, the driver can face a 90-day immediate driving prohibition, $500-fine and the consequences a third-time offender in the ‘Warn’ range faces. In addition, impaired drivers can be arrested and charged under the Criminal Code of Canada, sparking a criminal record. RCMP advises the public that if you are drinking, to choose a designated driver to get you home safely. “Alcohol affects your judgment, reaction time and coordination, your ability to steer, track moving objects, brake, and control your speed and lane position.”

FSJ Canfor contributes to playhouse design By Kyla Corpuz

FORT ST. JOHN – The forest industry is looking to “raise their profile” with a playhouse challenge hosted by Canfor. Eight B.C. lumber companies will sponsor wood that will be created into an innovative playhouse, and later be auctioned off with proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. “There had been some difficult economic years over the decline of the United States market some years ago,” said Christine Kennedy, director of public affairs for Canfor. “And it was just time to raise the profile of Canfor and the forest industry more broadly and to do some fun things for charity and to raise our profile in our communities.” The wood sponsors have been teamed up with designers; architects and builders who will create the fun and whimsical play spaces. “Each company that is participating in it provides the building material for the playhouse. All the companies that are participating are paired with an architect or designer and the builder.” The idea to build creative playhouses started at Canfor. Kennedy said Fort St. John’s Canfor contributed and provided ideas in terms of what the company wanted to build. “What people in the company have contributed though are ideas, imagination, enthusiasm, and helping to bring this project along from a concept to actually being put into implementation this summer,” said Kennedy. “Canfor employees sent in all kinds of ideas and suggestions in doing our playhouse design that’s based on the Mosquito Bomber.” Canfor was involved in providing materials for the original Mosquito Bomber. Kennedy said recreating it in a playhouse fashion is based on the company’s history. Canfor has teamed

with BCIT design students. Western Forest Products, one of the eight sponsors, will be working with Scott Construction and architect company Clive Grout and Associates to create a beach house inspired play space. Forest company, Interfor decided on doing the Tipi in a Box House, while Conifex seems to be keeping it traditional with The Tree House; and West Fraser’s design is a beehive house, Open 7 days a week mimicking the shape of honeycombs. Monday - Wednesday 10:00am-7:00pm Once the houses are finished they will be showcased at the Now Open til 9pm Thursday - Saturday, PNE in Vancouver. Thursday - Saturday 10:00am-9:00pm, Sunday 12:00-5:00pm “The sponsor and forest company will decide together where then their playhouse will end up. DAWSON CREEK – The Dawson Creek Seals are heading upstream with the help of a $16,800-grant from the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development’s Community Gaming Grant, announced on Jul. 4. Dawson Creek Seals Swim Club president Deanna Thomas said the funds would go towards pool rentals and wages for coaching staff. “[It’s a] significant boost to our income which is based on swimmer registration and fundraising,” said Thomas. The funding though, was not what they hoped to receive. They put in a request for over $40,000 in hopes to

gain at least half of that. “However we recognize that the $16, 800 awarded is in line with what other similar swim clubs have received.” Aside from provincial grants that the club receives annually, the Seals also rely on fundraising efforts throughout the year to keep them afloat. “Our club depends on donations from the community and the fundraising efforts of its members,” said Thomas. “Every year our members participate in activities such as: City Clean-up, Purdy’s chocolate sales, Lobsterfest, Seal’s Sink-a-Thon and various raffles.” The club currently has 64 members and caters primar-

The Canadian Grind

The Canadian Grind Coffee & Tea is proud to be, well, Canadian! The coffee shop, located beside Unforgettable Memories Foto Source, has an open and welcoming environment. Get comfy on the leather couches or take a seat with a freshly brewed organic coffee in hand. For the days when you’re on the go, zip through the drive-thru to order one of their 40 loose-leaf teas or anything else they have to offer on their menu, like a fresh fruit smoothie, a ViSalus shake, specialty coffees or an Italian soda. Even with a large assortment of tea already in-house, Lynette Kitt, owner of the Canadian Grind Coffee & Tea said, if there’s a flavour missing that a customer wants, she’ll order it in. Kitt is happy to say that her coffee beans are roasted in B.C. and all her fresh baked goodies, like cinnamon buns, breakfast biscuits and gourmet cupcakes, come straight from local bakers. Kitt also assures that all the drinks are made from pure ingredients, straying away from preservatives, for a healthier choice. With temperatures heating up, give yourself a treat and order this Canadian Grind favourite to keep you cool: iced mocha topped with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle—bring it on summer. Prices at Canadian Grind Coffee & Tea start at $1.75

HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.
