OREGON'S ALPENFEST SEPT. 24-27, 2015
regon s Alpenfest: Atradition in WallowaCoun Oregon's Alpenfest is a long-running Swiss-Bavarian cultural festival traditionally held on the last full weekend of September in Wallowa County, Oregon. Our region is known widely as Oregon's Little Switzerland because of our spectacular mountain scenery. We are a family-oriented and fun-filled event that celebrates the Alpine environment of the Wallowa country. Launched in 1976 as Alpenfest, our festival is the only annual Swiss-Bavarian festival in the western U.S. The 37th edition of Oregon's Alpenfest will run September 24-27, featuring polka music and dancing, yodeling, alphorns, Swiss and German cuisine, beer and wine, and art, craft, antique
Alpenfest are tax deductible. Alpenfest is governed by a board of directors consisting of seven members: +++Chuck Anderson of Enterprise, Alpenmeister and President and retired editor and publisher of the Wallowa County Chieftain. +++Lynn Wolf of Joseph, owner of Lakeside Interiors in Joseph.. +++Steve Lear of Enterprise, owner of Lear's Main Street Pub and Grill in Enterprise. +++Peter Brandt of Joseph, owner of Alpine Auto in Joseph. +++Tom Powers, Enterprise attorney and an organizer of the Wallowa Alpenrace
and gift shopping. Our Alpenfest differs from a routine Oktoberfest in several ways: +++There is more yodeling, especially Swiss yodeling. +++The 12-foot-long alphorn (think Ricola) is front-and-center. +++While we are growing, we still are smaller and more smalltown friendly than the typical large Oktoberfest. Oregon's Alpenfest, the festival, is presented by Alpenfest, a 501(c)(3) Oregon nonprofit corporation. Contributions to
These board members are bolstered by a cadre of loyal volunteers, without whom our festival wouldn't happen. The volunteers decorate the Edelweiss Inn, set up and take down chairs and tables, cook and serve bratwurst meals, provide safety and security, pour beer and wine, take your tickets and perform numerous other tasks. We salute these supporters of Oregon's Alpenfest, whose time and energy make our festival possible.

Salzburger Echo polka band Salzburger Echo comes from its home base in Utah to play for the first time at Oregon's Alpenfest. Although these guys usually perform elsewhere on Alpenfest weekend, we strongarmed them to give Oregon's Little Switzerland a try. Salzburger Echo brings the Alps to audiences, playing Old World and contemporary folk music from the alpine regions of Switzerland, Germany and Austria. They continue to amaze audiences with their alphorns, Swiss cowbells, holzernes g'achter and har-
mony yodeling. Together since 1992, Salzburger Echo has played many venues and festivals throughout the United States and Europe. They comprise one of the most sought-after Alpine bands in the nation. Festivals such as Mt. Angel Oktoberfest in Oregon, Snowbird's Annual Oktoberfest in Utah, Las Vegas Oktoberfest, Ruidoso Oktoberfest in New Mexico and Oktoberfest at Snake River Brewing in Jackson Hole, Wyo., invite Salzburger Echo to perform year after year because of their high-energy showmanship, outstanding musicianship and cunning wit.

Tirolean Dancers folk dance troupe The Tirolean Dancers of Oregon have been popular Alpenfest entertainers for many years. Their energetic style is typical of Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The dancers hail from all over Oregon and Washington. They are regulars at Oktoberfests throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Bruce Coutant, alphornist Alphorn player Bruce Coutant lives in Wallowa County, where he crafts alphorns as one of very few alphorn builders outside Europe. Bruce also plays French horn lo-
cally.

Randy and Ashley Thull, nationally renowned professional polka dancers from Wisconsin, will give free polka lessons at Oregon's Alpenfest. As a couple, the Thulls have danced in competition for eight years and each has been dancing since childhood. They often appear on the "Mollie 8 Polka Party" on RFD-TV and have been featured on the show's three Christmas specials. A video of them dancing competitively is on their website, www.thepolkadancers.com. Their free 45-minute polka lessons will precede each of the four performances of Oregon's Alpenfest at Wallowa Lake. Lessons will be at 6 p.m. Friday, noon and 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. "In past years, we received repeated requests to teach the polka," said Chuck Anderson, the festival's alpenmeister. "We

brought Randy and Ashley here for the first time last year and couldn't be more pleased." "They are among the best polka dancers in the world and are in
high demand," he added. The Thulls live in Kewaskum, Wis., where Randy also plays in the Goodtime Dutchmen band. Among many honors, Ashley is a former Miss United Polka Association and serves as dance director for Polka America Corp. Two of their children, Ryan and Ashlyn, also polka. "There is a West Coast polka belt that includes Oregon, but most polka enthusiasts from other areas don't know about us," Anderson said. "We hope thathaving Randy and Ashley Randy and Ashley Thull mill teach the polka here will help spread the word."

It's customary for just about any polka band to include one or more accordions. Many solo accordionists
also like to play polkas. At Oregon's Alpenfest, we have hosted many accordion players and our Accordions
at Alpenfest event on Thursday night has become a staple of Alpenfest weekend. Here are some of the accordion players from our recent festivals.

H ow S w l s s h e l p e d s e t t l e O r e g o n The Swiss community in western Oregon traces its roots all the way back to the pioneer days of the Pacific Northwest. A few Swiss had migrated north after the California Gold Rush of 1849 and, as Portland became settled in the 1850s, immigrants began arriving in larger numbers. In 1857 a number of Swiss, mainly Mennonites from Bern, founded colonies at Cedar Mill, Bethany and West Union in Washington County. Other Swiss communities soon were established in Hillsdale, Phillips and Helvetia. The Swiss immigrants found the fertile valleys and forested hillsides similar in many ways to their homeland. During the last quarter of the 19th Century, economic hard times in Europe and the promise of new opportunities in America brought several thousand Swiss immigrants to western Oregon and southwestern Washington. The abbey and college at Mt. Angel — originally "Engelberg" — were founded
during this period by a group of Benedictine monks. The brothers of the order came from the historic original Swiss cantons of Uri , Schwyz and Unterwalden. Their success in agriculture induced
many farmers from these cantons to settle the area. During the 20th Century, Swiss immigrants continued to settle
this region. The topography, climate and fertility of the land were found to be especially desirable by Swiss farmers, dairymen and fruit growers, while the larger cities provided industrial and technical
