school, namely Umapine. In the lower bracket there were three "B" schools and these were listed with five "A" schools. The "B" teams in the lower bracket were Mill City, No. 19; Gardner, No. 15; and Oakridge, No. 16. Hence, it was not possible for the four "B" teams to play the second night as they did in the following year of 1936, which automatically gave an authentic "B" champion that year. However, in 1935, Oakridge received special attention by receiving a silver trophy as the state's outstanding"B" team and the placement of two of their men on the all-star team, consisting of five men. On this all-star team were Laddie Gale, center, ilaterin 1939 selected forAll-American while playing on the University of Oregon basketball team) and Jake Fisher, guard. The necessity of placing the "B" teams with the "A" in the tournament of 1935 was due to the financial condition at the time of the Depression. There were 10 "A" districts — nine of them having one team each; Portland in the 10th district having two teams, for a totalof11 teams present. Salem, as host team, made up the 12th team. However, Father Leipzig continued to struggle for a separate tournament and

this goal was finally reached in 1941 when the first independent state tournament of the "B" schools was held at Southern Oregon College of Education at Ashland. At this tournament, Westport defeated Corbett 42 to 35 for the championship. The legendary"B" team of Bellfountain won the first actual state basketball tournament in 1936, defeating Myrtle Creek 31 to 22. This outstanding team has the high and distinct honor of being the only"B" team that won the State "B" and State "A" tournament in 1937 when they defeated Chiloquin 39 to 21 for the State "B" Championship and Lincoln of Portland the final night 35 to 21 for the "A" championship. They placed two men on the first team all-star team — Kessler, center, and Wallace, guard — and one on the second team — Buckingham, forward. Previous to the division of the "A" and "B" teams it was rare that a small school could compete againstthe larger schoolsfor the privilege ofbeing at the state tournament. However, Athena High, in 1933, fought its way into the semifinals and placed Jenkins, guard, on the first all-star team. In 1932, Kebbe, center, of Nehalem, was placed on the first all-star team. In 1929,Sarrett,guard,of Wallowa, was placed on the first all- star team.
