St. Luke's, Saint Alphonsus partner to staff the school-based health center ■■The center, located inside Baker High School, serves about 60 kids a month By Lisa Britton

T

he school-based health center at Baker High School has provided care for students since 1992 and now it represents a partnership between three organizations in Baker City. The Baker County Health Department is the clinical sponsor. In the past, the BCHD has contracted out for a provider. "That contract wasn't renewed," says Robin Nudd, BCHD director. Two Baker City health care providers — Saint Alphonsus Medical Center-Baker City and St. Luke's EOMA — put in bids for the contract. "It was so great having both of them interested," Nudd said. After meeting with Saint Alphonsus and St. Luke's, a partnership emerged where the different organizations cover the center throughout the week. Here is the schedule of providers, who are at the center from 9 a.m. to noon: • Monday: Monte Anderson, PA-C, St. Luke's • Tuesday: Courtney Travis, NP-C, Saint Alphonsus Valley Medical Clinic • Wednesday: Devin Bowman, PA-C, St.

Another advantage, Nudd said, is that these four providers also work in local clinics, which means students are able to see them at other times, such as the summer, when the school-based health center isn't open. "The kids are building trust with them," Nudd said. cARE FOR ALL STUDENTS

The center serves all students in kindergarten through Grade 12 in Baker County. Students in Grades K-8 must be accompanied by an adult. For high school students, access to the center helps keep them in school rather than having to leave for a doctor's appointment. "And it saves a parent from missing work," Hills said. The center serves an average of 60 students per month. The school-based health center offers nearly all the same services that can be found at the clinic, including: immunizations; routine physical exams; routine lab tests (strep, urinary tract infection, pregnancy); health education and counseling; screenings for vision, dental and blood pressure; age-appropriate reproductive health education (birth control is not dispensed — patients are referred to the health department or their primary care provider); and diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury. "Depression is probably the number

"There are a lot of resources we can connect them with."

— Robin Nudd, director of the Baker County Health Department, which is the clinical sponsor of the school-based health center at Baker High School

one thing," Anderson said. Every patient has a complete physical exam, which includes questions that indicate the patient might be depressed. "There's education, too, which is a huge piece," said Rob Gaslin, Saint Alphonsus financial controller. Providers can also refer students for services not provided at the clinic, such as resources for clothing and food. "There are a lot of resources we can connect them with," Nudd said. Students 15 and older can sign their own consent forms for care and Hills said this helps teenagers learn to take control of their health. However, "we always encourage parental involvement," Hills said. Nudd said the health department staffs a table during the Parent Resource Fair in August during school registration, which provides a chance for parents to provide insurance information. This is the first year the health center has billed insurance for services. "It's become a requirement," Nudd said. Students can either walk in to see a provider, or make an appointment. The clinic's number is 541-524-2646.

GRH welcomes new doctors on staff

By Trish Yerges

Grande Ronde Hospital has added two medical professionals to its staff — Dr. Emilia Arden, practicing general cardiology, and Dr. Christine Quinto, a practicing neurologist. “Dr. Arden is the first full-time cardiologist for Union County and the region,” said Mardi Ford, community relations manager at Grande Ronde Hospital. “There are other systems who have had cardiologists come into clinics, but they only come for one day a month or every other month. This is full-time access to care that is right here at home with a provider who will be a contributing member investing in our community.”

Dr. ARden

In addition to general cardiology, Arden is a specialist in autonomic dysfunction, including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). Symptoms of autonomic dysfunction may include lightheadedness, fainting, unstable blood pressure, abnormal heart rates and malnutrition. Arden is a member of the American College of Cardiology and earned her fellowship in cardiovascular disease from Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Michigan. She completed her residency and internship at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, where she practiced at Northwest Cardiology since 2007. She holds double bachelor of science degrees — one in nursing from Arizona State University and a second in electrical engineering from the University of Oradea in Oradea, Romania. She began seeing patients at the

GRH cardiology clinic on Jan. 13 and may be reached at 541-963-BEAT. No doctor referrals are required to see her. Dr. Quinto

Also new to Grande Ronde Hospital is neurologist Dr. Quinto, who comes from Bayonne, N.J., where she has been in private practice at Hudson Neurosciences since 1998. Quinto’s experience includes four years as director at the Sleep Center in Hudson Neurosciences and another four years as the medical director for the BMC Sleep Center in Bayonne. Her residency and post-doctural training was at the department of neurology in St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center of New York. As a neurologist, Dr. Quinto is qualified to diagnose and treat disorders of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles and the involun-

tary nervous system that controls the heart, lungs and other organs. Neurologists also treat headaches, stroke, dementia, seizures, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, sleep disorders and neuromuscular diseases. “Dr. Quinto will join Dr. Ricky Lim in February, providing neurology services to patients throughout the region and she will also serve as medical director of the Grande Ronde Hospital Sleep Clinic,” Ford said. Patients may make appointments to see Dr. Quinto by calling the Regional Medical Clinic at 541-663-3158. Health and Wellness Guide

Benefits of Water

Improving your health with a simple fix: drinking more water By Dr. Kenneth Rose

What would you call an “ideal” medication that is as effective in reducing the risk of a heart attack as stopping smoking, or Dr. Rose reducing cholesterol, or reducing high blood pressure? In addition, this “medication” can significantly reduce the incidence of many diseases such as kidney stones, gallbladder disease, constipation, urinary track infections, high blood pressure and venus blood clots. Would you be tempted to call it a “miracle drug”? Or, more accurately, just plain water! A study from the American Journal of Epidemiology (Vol. 176, No. 4, Aug. 15, 2012) showed that those who drink more than five glasses of water a day had a much lower risk of dying from a heart attack than those drinking less than two cups a day. This is water — not other liquids such as coffee, juices, or carbonated drinks. Jacqueline Chan, DrPH, author of the study goes on to say, “Basically, not drinking enough water can be as harmful to your heart as smoking.” 34

Drinking more than five cups of water per day can cut the risk of coronary artery disease in half (50 percent). People often ask "how much water should I be drinking?" While some just rely on their “thirst buds” to determine their body's need for water, in actuality by the time they are thirsty, their bodies are well behind in their water needs. Others rely on the standard answer of eight 8-ounce glasses a day. But in reality, the amount of water our bodies need can vary tremendously upon our age, gender, level of activity, medications and environmental conditions. A good starting point to determine our bodies need for water each day is to take our weight and divide it by two. That number will give you the number of ounces we should be drinking each day. However, an even more accurate way to determine our bodies need for water is by looking at the color of our urine. For people not taking a water pill, the color of their urine should be a light straw-colored yellow. If it’s too dark, then they are not getting enough water. If it’s clear, then they are adequately hydrated. As with our cars which like water in the radiator to cool the engine, our bodies love to be well-hydrated to function properly. After all, our bodies are nearly 75 percent water!

Five ways to make sure you drink your water • Have a glass by your bed and drink it first thing before you get up in the morning

• Invest in a good water bottle to take to work with you and keep at your desk

• Replace your afternoon coffee, soda or treat with a large glass of water; add lemon or lime for flavor

• Replace sodas, milk, juice and alcohol with water as your evening beverage • For a festive drink, try carbonated water with lemon or lime in a wine or champagne glass

So, keep well-hydrated in order to keep all our body’s functions running smoothly drink your water! Rose is a general surgeon at Wallowa Memorial Hospital. Health and Wellness Guide

Support Groups

GRH hosts cancer and Parkinson’s support groups By Trish Yerges

S

upport groups for cancer and Parkinson’s disease will be hosted monthly at Grande Ronde Hospital with program topics and resources designed for patients, their families and caregivers. Organizing the new cancer support group are: April Brock, RN, surgical services manager; Lorna Omann, patient navigator for the oncology clinic; Nora Zimmerman, GRH education coordinator as well as program coordinators Lora Bannan and Helen Looslie. “The meetings are an opportunity for cancer patients, survivors and loved ones to share information related to cancer," Omann said. The meetings will be held on the fourth Monday of each month starting at 6:30 p.m., and lasts for about an hour. “We will have a speaker for each meeting and different topics will be discussed," she said. The January meeting will feature Lora Bannan of La Grande, a cancer survivor who will be giving a testimonial about what it meant for her to have a support group in her life. February’s meeting will cover Grande Ronde Hospital’s financial assistance programs and those of some drug manufacturers. The March program will feature speaker Susan Lewis, dietary manager at Grande Ronde Hospital. She will talk about beneficial foods for cancer patients and how to work around dietary changes a patient may encounter during treatment. The cancer support group organizers welcome any topic recommendations from the public for future meetings. 36

The Parkinson’s disease (PD) support group, instituted in September, will continue to hold their 2016 meetings on the third Monday of each month from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Solarium room on the third floor at Grande Ronde Hospital. Wendy Smith, the PD support group organizer, is partnering with Grande Ronde Hospital and Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon to bring current information and emotional support to area patients, their families and caregivers or anyone

who wants to learn about Parkinson’s disease. No pre-registration is required. “My goals for this support group include bringing an understanding of Parkinson’s disease to those who attend," Smith said. "I also want to introduce the latest scientific information, share knowledge of doctors who treat this disorder, talk about current medications and just offer support, empathy and a listening ear." Smith has been a PD patient for the past three years. For more information on this support group, contact Nora Zimmerman, GRH education coordinator at 541-963-1486 or 1495. New Directions expands services ■■The program, called Total Health, is located at Saint Alphonsus Medical Center By Lisa Britton

N

ew Directions Northwest Inc., which provides counseling services for mental health, drug and alcohol abuse and more, has expanded into a wing of Saint Alphonsus Medical Center-Baker City. The rooms that once housed the hospital's care center have been redesigned into offices and treatment rooms where counselors can meet with clients individually, or as a group. This location will be used for outpatient appointments and will go by the name Total Health, which joins New Directions' other programs: Recovery Village, Baker House, Elkhorn Adolescent Treatment Center and the alternative incarceration program at Powder River Correctional Facility. Total Health will offer services by mental health counselors, substance abuse counselors and community health care workers, as well as pain management programs and crisis respite rooms. An open house is planned for February. "It's an exciting project," said Shari Selander, New Directions' chief executive officer.

Having a location inside the hospital will help in other ways too, Selander said, such as helping medical staff after a trauma situation. She describes this as "professionals helping professionals." Total Health is, she says "here for the whole community." "Everyone can acknowledge that at some point in your life, you're going to have a crisis," she said. mmunizations aren't just for children — adults also need to be aware of their vaccination history and whether or not they need boosters or other vaccines. Those vaccines include tetanus with pertussis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, shingles (age 60 and older) and pneumonia (age 65 and older). Other vaccines adults may need are HPV (women age 26 or younger; men age 22 to 26); meningococcal (ages 19 to 21 who are first-year college students); and varicella. Also, a flu shot is recommended every year. Your doctor can recommend which vaccines you may need.

Physical Therapy

Help for those with osteoarthritis By Zachary Brown

Osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease, is a slowly evolving process that affects the joints of your body. It is the single most common joint disease in The United States, affecting 60 percent of men and 70 percent of women over the age of 65. Osteoarthritis most commonly affects the hands and large weight bearing joints such as the hips and knees. The condition involves breakdown of the cartilage of your joints, which can start to cause changes to the underlying bone, decreasing the space within the joint. This causes significant inflammation in your joints, which increases your pain level, decreases your function and can prevent you from performing your hobbies and activities. Having a history of joint trauma, smoking, being overweight, hypermobility (excessive movement of a joint), genetics and bone density are all risk factors for developing osteoarthritis. Bony enlargement of joints, a decrease in range of motion of a joint, swelling, pain, stiffness that is worse in the morning or after a period of inactivity and audible cracking of the joint with movement are all symptoms of osteoarthritis and may warrant further examination by a medical specialist. So what can you do about it? Physical therapy can provide significant relief from the pain experienced with osteoarthritis. Specialized exercise programs

can be developed to target specific muscles to better stabilize a joint that is inflamed and to facilitate proper joint movement. Bracing is available to support arthritic joints and increase the space within them to provide pain relief. Aquatic therapy can provide strengthening and stabilization of a joint while decreasing the forces going through it and allowing you to exercise with decreased pain levels. There are many other techniques

to better support your joints and decrease your overall pain. The main purpose of physical therapy is to decrease your pain levels, improve you quality of life and get you back doing the activities you enjoy doing.
