O ur Stor y Established in Chesterfield in 1987 as a small family business, Northern Lights has grown into the UK’s leading manufacturer of bespoke decorative light fittings. The business has been carefully developed from the craftsmanship of a small team of skilled artisans who started by designing and hand-making various products from stained glass. The business developed quickly from these initial pieces, and within a few short years, the company had transformed into exclusively manufacturing bespoke lighting for the hospitality sector. Fast forward to the early 2000s, and as demand for bespoke light fittings increased, new skills and crafts were added to the business. The decision was made to purchase larger premises and invest in new state-of-the-art machinery, specialist tooling and paint facilities. With this increased capacity and capability, Northern Lights has developed and has become the leading supplier of truly bespoke light fittings for many of the UK’s largest hospitality providers. You will likely have experienced some of our fabulous bespoke lighting if you have visited any of the UK’s leading hotels, restaurants, bars or coffee shops. More recently, Northern Lights has successfully provided its bespoke manufacturing solutions into the premium and high-end areas of the hospitality and residential sectors. We have also further invested in our manufacturing capabilities. Northern Lights is very proud of its in-house manufacturing capability. With this capability in the hands of our talented, creative design team, we can create exquisite bespoke installations and some truly unique collections. Northern Lights has particular expertise in glass techniques, metal fabrication and an extensive range of finishes, all produced in our own facilities. As of 2020, Northern Lights became part of The National Lighting Company Ltd. As a long term owner, they have a proven history in developing decorative lighting companies across the UK, Europe, Middle East and the Far East. The expert team at Northern Lights is led by Donna Bruce, who joined the business in the late 1990s. Together with Donna’s intrinsic understanding of every aspect of the business and the support from The National Lighting Company Ltd, the vision for the future of Northern Lights is to utilise our creative capabilities further and to push the boundaries of manufacturing to create some of the most iconic luxury bespoke lighting on a global scale.

Har ro d s Hair & B eauty London
Designers: Sparcstudio Photography: Nigel Gibson for MOprojects Harrods, the iconic Knightsbridge retailer, has reopened its Hair & Beauty Salon after a transformative make-over. The ‘World’s Leading Luxury Department Store’ has been a prominent tourist attraction in London for many years, as well as a mainstay for many of London’s elite to find extravagant brands from around the globe. With a sophisticated retro nod to the salon’s former 1982 design, Sparcstudio Design, an award-winning studio with a focus on luxury spa and wellness design, fitted out the luxury department store’s beauty quarters with glossy peach marble, cream stone counters, powder-pink walls and finished it off with gold touches. Sparcstudio applies a bespoke design approach to every project, and they always aim to create a unique product with a real ‘sense of place’, individuality and luxury. The team at Northern Lights was delighted to be invited to work on such a prestigious project. With over 170 years in business and many prestigious designers being involved with the store’s interior down the years, the opportunity to join a massive part of British retail heritage was incredibly appealing to the company. The deluxe fit-out, overseen by MOprojects, includes beautifully arranged soft hues of powder pink combined with more striking brass details. Our uniquely crafted spiralling brushed brass pendant in the centre of the salon comprises twenty-five handcrafted arms, each complete with a brass cover spinning for a lamp holder. The intricately designed fixture brings the entire room together by creating a stunning focal point that is aesthetically charming and entirely purposeful. Each entrance to the salon is decorated with our brushed brass wall sconces, each complete with polycarbonate tubes fixed to a brass backplate.
7
In the salon’s waiting area, the customer seating is illuminated by brushed brass wall sconces finished with a curved front trim. The front trim covers a polycarbonate tube that emits a warm glow. Close to the customer seating are a series of desks ornamented by our brushed brass pendants, all uniquely identified by laser-cut brass discs soldered to matching brass tubes. Elsewhere, a hallway containing numerous entrances to purpose-built spa rooms has been lined with our bidirectional laser-cut wall sconces, each complete with polycarbonate acrylic diffusers that emit a calming source of light. The spa’s reception desk is haloed beautifully by our three-tiered brushed brass pendant. The expertly crafted pendant has been completed with various brass details, including ceiling couplers and trim plates. Our uniquely designed powder-coated champagne gold wall lamps in the laser rooms have been expertly coupled with alabaster plates that expose individual veining patterns. Finally, the main reception and check-in desk has been adorned with several of our Tibor table lamps, each one modified to be fixed into the work surface. Our Tibor table lamp is exquisitely handcrafted from old English brass and oiled bronze for a marvellous sharpness that contrasts with its vibrant white alabaster shade. Subtle details such as the ribbed stem and knurled finial are the finishing touches that help complement the unique veining found throughout the alabaster stone.

Th e Carlton Tow er Jum eirah London
Designers: 1508 Photography: The Jumeirah Group The world of hospitality can finally celebrate the opening of The Carlton Tower Jumeirah, a masterpiece of the international design studio 1508 London that has allowed the hotel’s original site to prosper in London’s Knightsbridge neighbourhood. For a hotel group that shelters the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, an internationally recognised jewel of luxury, the challenges associated with designing other hotels in the portfolio are apparent. However, operating a luxury hotel in London is a different task that requires a sensitive and dynamic approach from concept right through to completion. Every nook of the 17-storey building has been redesigned by interior design studio 1508, creating a new foyer and reception, 186 new guestrooms and suites, a new health club and spa with London’s largest naturally lit swimming pool, a restaurant, lobby bar and lounge, ballroom and meeting rooms. The term ‘modern classic’ springs to mind when entering the building originally designed by Henry End, also responsible for the interiors of the Plaza Hotel in New York. The design team have drawn on the hotel’s glamorous heritage and location to create a modern classic with a timeless, refined interior and sense of grandeur.
11
The design team at Northern Lights were thrilled to realise 1508’s vision for the grand hotel, for which the brief required a vast quantity of exquisitely crafted bespoke lighting for numerous public spaces. The scheme utilised many luxurious materials; porcelain, brass, bronze and cut glass. We worked closely with the designers to realise their intricately detailed designs. Upon entrance to the hotel, guests are greeted by our fixed cylindrical wall lights that have been expertly crafted using fine reeded glass and finished in a bronze lacquer. The frosted acrylic tube within enhances the illuminated effect, providing light that perfectly reflects the finish’s surface. Our dark antique brass wall lights in the tea room bring a touch of handcrafted extravagance to the area by displaying hammered brass tubes with delicately soldered joints, complete with a handmade fabric shade. The destination restaurant offers a sophisticated, welcoming dining experience imbued with all the charms of Italian cuisine, both familiar and luxurious. In the Al Mare private dining room, our incredible 1.8 metre-wide brass pendant is fixed centrally above the main dining table, creating a unique and diverting focal point. This elegant and considered design comprises eight brass arms, each complete with slumped porcelain dishes that provide a warm ambience within the space. The pendant perfectly complements the timeless aesthetic displayed by 1508 in this particular area of the building. Elsewhere, the hotel’s famous health club ‘The Peak Fitness Club & Spa’ is uncommonly enormous compared to other wellness scenes in other London hotels. Set across three floors, the whole area has been completely redesigned. Our polished brass table lights sit atop several tables and provide a well-considered source of lighting reflected by the brass underside of the shade. A collection of our bronze wall lamps sit flush to the dark wood-panelled walls in the spa lounge. Each one of the lamps is complete with a slumped clear glass shade, housing a frosted LED tube within. 12

Th e May fair Tow nh ou se London
Designers: Goddard Littlefair Photography: Mel Yates Situated near London’s Green Park, The Mayfair Townhouse is the latest luxury boutique hotel to light up the City’s hospitality offerings. Located on Half Moon Street, alongside Piccadilly, The Mayfair Townhouse debuted in September 2020 with 172 rooms & suites, The Dandy Bar, private gym and versatile event spaces. On the northern fringe of Buckingham Palace-adjacent Green Park in London’s most expensive neighbourhood, this brand-new hotel isn’t just one townhouse; it’s 15 of them. Mayfair is synonymous with status, heritage and prestige and up until the mid-18th century was mostly rural, famous for its annual May Fair. The townhouses lining Half Moon Street formed the setting for Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Almost all of the design language, which comes courtesy of London-based design firm Goddard Littlefair, is decidedly British, which is no surprise considering that The Mayfair Townhouse is the sixth property in Iconic Luxury Hotels’ dazzling portfolio.

16
Northern Lights continued their collaboration with Goddard Littlefair ensuring their lighting designs were realised as intended, enhancing the spaces they occupied and creating a focal point and inviting ambience. Presented on the suite’s bedside walls are a duo of our delicately handcrafted Ophelia wall lights. With an antique brass finish and an ivory alabaster diffuser, they give the Deco-inspired fixtures an elegant form that perfectly complements their surroundings. Designed to utilise the rich veining of the stone when illuminated, the handcrafted wall sconces combine classic shapes with natural organic elements enhancing the warm inviting ambience of the room. The Dandy Bar has all of the ingredients to become an iconic destination bar. With a cocktail menu that amplifies the hotel’s brand, the area full of guests and locals will very much be an extension of the design itself. Centre stage is the overhead fixture in the revered Dandy Bar. Comprised of cast and slumped glass feathers, delicately etched to create the fine plume detail, the skilfully handcrafted bar feature light takes inspiration from the flapper dresses made popular in the 1920s. The aesthetic provided by the eye-catching design creates the desired effects that The Mayfair Townhouse required from the brief resulting in a bar space and area where it is a joy to imbibe.

Designers: Goddard Littlefair Photography: Gareth Gardner Completing late September 2019, the five-star renovation saw an entire redesign of The Lowry Hotel’s bar and restaurant. Retaining the incredible, unique riverside views and terrace and The Lowry’s unwavering commitment to service, the new lounge bar and restaurant features soft hues, a new layout and bespoke furnishings. The fresh look was curated by renowned interior designers, Goddard Littlefair, who also designed the hotel’s Presidential Suite and lobby areas with a similar fluid and sophisticated look and feel. The mix of bright & graphic abstract gallery artworks complements the rich interior, with slimline brass frames for added glamour, balanced with greenery for relaxed and natural surroundings. Goddard Littlefair was announced as the winner of the 2020 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards - Hotel Category for their work on The River Restaurant.

Northern Lights were once more delighted to work with Goddard Littlefair on bringing their vision to life through bespoke lighting. The restaurant interior’s exuberant design required bespoke lighting that would marry with the wonderfully rich colour palette displayed throughout. The geometric influences, musical heritage of Manchester, and metal elements in the restaurant were all factors to consider during the design process. The pairing of the brushed brass elements with the rich amber glass work beautifully with the considered scheme – the filament tube lamps enhancing the warm hues that encompass the inviting seating areas. Accompanying the pendants are a collection of expertly crafted offset brushed brass cylinder wall sconces. The elegant fixtures comprise of two staggered sharp-edged cylinders with a brass interior that provides a warming glow when illuminated. The bold and beautiful wall lights encompass their surroundings by providing a bi-directional light source.

Designers: Goddard Littlefair Photography: Michael Franke Once the favoured haunt of socialite Lillie Langtry (who previously owned part of the building) and Oscar Wilde, who was infamously arrested in room 118, Belmond Cadogan has had a rich and illustrious past ever since it was built in 1887. The hotel has undergone a complete transformation, spanning four years, to restore the unique heritage of the site. The interiors have been renovated with a style that is contemporary and reflective of the hotel’s history — featuring surprising details alluding to people who’ve shaped its past. Northern Lights were delighted to work with both Russell Sage and GA design on the bespoke lighting for the public areas of this prestigious hotel. GA Design International designed the 54 bedrooms and suites and reception, lift lobby and meeting areas. The aim was to evoke the spirit of a grand townhouse. The bespoke lighting reflected this with its scale and impact, without overpowering the unique features in the space. The reception area is dominated by their chandelier to the entrance which comprises of two large rings with bespoke spun shades finished in off white with a warm and luxurious gold interior. Russell Sage Studio, meanwhile, is behind the design of The bar and the restaurant, the latter comprising two separate spaces – one a stuccoed and panelled room inspired by Langtry’s dining room and the other dressed with colourful paintings by artist Katy Jade Dobson – that come together to form a sophisticated backdrop for chef Adam Handling’s menu of updated British fare. 22

Elegant table lamps adorn the reception desks, the candlesticks inspired by those carved from ebony and ivory in the 19th century, and created more ethically using brass, mixed metals and soft patinas. Completed with an open weave linen shade to create a warm ambience. The lift lobby area features a ring pendant illuminated with LEDs and finished with one of our bespoke antique brass finishes. The meeting rooms are illuminated by two large multi-arm brass chandeliers, this traditional design is framed by sheer voile drums, delivering a more contemporary feel to the room. With strong Art Deco influences the concepts and designs by Russell Sage Studio perfectly complement the opulent and luxurious bar and restaurant spaces. The two-tier feature chandelier comprises of forty-four crackled glass globes, housed by individual copper-spun pans. The frame of the extravagant bespoke centrepiece was handcrafted using mirror polished nickel. Wall lights in the surrounding area complement the chandelier style and are finished in antique brass patinas with two different sized reeded glass spheres to illuminate the seating areas. In the bay seating areas, traditional handblown well glass shapes are completed with hand formed copper detailing. These are suspended by polished nickel framework and result in a truly unique ceiling pendant. The restaurant areas are framed by a series of wall light features which are embedded in the panelling. These comprise of hand blown reeded glass formed in the shape of a strawberry which is then silhouetted by a similar shape formed from polished nickel metalwork. In the piano room, the wall lights are again framed by the panelling although this design sits proud of the wall and features an off centre dish which reflects the light back onto the wall creating a halo effect. The central chandeliers to the restaurant areas feature lead crystal tiers and hand cut oval textured glass on a tiered ring – both finished in polished nickel which was the specified finish for all these designs, as authentic to the Art Deco period and interior of the hotel. 25

Designers: Atellior Photography: Bruno Rondinelli Whilst remaining luxurious and contemporary, fun twists come from the vibrant bursts of colour and pattern on the upholstery and brass details throughout this wonderful private residence in Chelsea. The luxury properties of London combine quality materials and exquisite craftsmanship in contemporary interpretations, and there is no exception to that statement with Atellior’s vision for the property. Atellior’s inspiration behind this spectacular penthouse’s interior scheme recalls London’s iconic 60s aesthetic. Located in the heart of the Capital, it was an epicentre for fashion and trendsetting during the 1960s. Atellior’s concept emphasises the areas exciting and unique history, exploring colour, pattern and vibrancy in all aspects of the interior design. Quirky and sophisticated furniture enveloped with luxurious detailing is inspired by and refers to this 60’s design period. Whilst remaining contemporary, fun twists come from the vibrant bursts of colour and pattern on the upholstery and brass details throughout. Almost all the furnishings, including the lighting, are custom-made by British artisans.

Northern Lights were honoured to accept Atellior’s enticing brief. The challenges involved with crafting such intricate statement pieces are typically enough to keep our designers and artisans stimulated whilst considering the myriad in-house options we have to realise the form and details. When first entering the penthouse, the attention is instantaneously drawn by the stunning bespoke pendant light consisting of a cluster of illuminated ivory alabaster discs suspended from antique brushed brass rings and rods. This highlights the scale of the area and height of the hallway atrium. Each disc contains a different stone pattern and vein effect meaning each stone is entirely bespoke and unique. Above the dining table is another cleverly specified bespoke lighting design. Circular and semicircular frosted glass discs are suspended from brass arms, in one of our bespoke brass finishes, that spur off in several directions to cover the surface area of the table below. The suspension is connected to a handcrafted box containing several downlighters, each projecting light onto the rich brass and glass detail below. Our expertly crafted bedside lamps realise another stunning Atellior design in the bedrooms that gives their users full control over the drop without compromising the fitting. The handblown smoke glass shades are suspended by a length of flex threaded through a roller and combined with a counterweight. The addition of the counterweight allows the lamp to be raised or lowered at the user’s convenience.

C OYA Mayfair, Paris, Mykonos & Monte-Carlo
Designers: Sagrada Photography: John Carey, Michael Franke (Mayfair), Romain Ricard (Paris), Christos Drazos (Mykonos) & David Griffen (Monte-Carlo) Famed for its bespoke décor, incorporating Peruvian artefacts, eye-catching plant features and bespoke hand-crafted furniture, and designed by the London based design team Sagrada, COYA links stylish, contemporary Peruvian cuisine with a colourful and vibrant ambience. Northern Lights have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with the COYA network of restaurants, which sees a range of our bespoke lighting throughout its venues across the globe. The Aurelia chandeliers and pendants, which have become a signature feature of COYA restaurants, are striking in their size and location. The imposing fixtures command a central position in the main dining areas drawing the eye to the ornate and gilded ceilings which complement the antique gold patina of the light. Inspired by textile designs from the 1950s and then abstracting the shape into a fluid Art Nouveau form, the Aurelia range showcases the result of quality craftsmanship as well as unrivalled luxury. Laser-cut in mild steel for rigidity and strength, Aurelia is available in two finishes: Tarnished Gold, a distressed dark umber finish applied to a satin brass base coat and finished with an eggshell lacquer and Flamed Blackened Steel, a modern yet painterly finish with different depths of tone and elements of bronze within the patina.

32
Some of the bespoke lighting created for COYA is unique to specific venues. Specified for the Paris COYA is an antique crystal chandelier – designed and created to mimic the old flea market finds from the nineteenth century. Hundreds of faceted crystal shapes are suspended around antique decorative brass bands and illuminated by decorative candle lamps. Solid brass tube bespoke wall lights evoking pipe instruments pop out against a cobalt blue wall framing red velvet banqueting seats. These are intricately soldered by our skilled fabricators and finished with a tarnished antique patina using bronzing acids. Bespoke multi-level laser-cut tarnished brass pendants lie amongst the newly introduced foliage. The intricately designed statement fixtures benefit from a reflective interior that emits a warming light source from its three light sources. Suspended by chains, the opulent chandeliers provide a stunning focal point amongst a delicately applied composition of intelligent and sympathetic interior design. This organic wave pendant has been used in various designs in several of the COYA schemes as the form with its waves, and undulating lines work well with the rich interiors and draping foliage. Northern Lights also supplied bespoke wall lights featuring a single fluted tear-drop glass with a brass backplate in an antique finish to the equally opulent restrooms. The elegant shape and impeccable finish have shown how simple shapes can make a substantial impact on quirky areas.

The large scale bespoke Coffer pendants in the Restaurant offer interest and ambient light to the entire dining space. Finished in a dark wood stain with reeded glass diffusers, they enhance the area without overwhelming it. Northern Lights also supplied all the bedroom and suite lighting. Antique brass finishes used to significant effect for the wall, floor and desk lights complementing the simple yet classic designs. Bathroom lights supplied were sleek and elegant in a brushed brass finish with matt opal diffusers. Large Tiered drum Lampshades in natural linens were the focal point of the suite lounge areas, finished with designer trims which worked beautifully with the antique finish to the curved floor lamps. Lift lobby areas featured luxurious velvet seating and statement furniture pieces using highly polished onyx, stone and brass. A trio of Hexagonal lampshades with contrasting trims suspended on decorative fixed rods completed the scheme. Supporting both Goddard Littlefair and The Biltmore in this prestigious Hotel has been a great honour for Northern Lights. We manufactured luxury bespoke light fittings for the public areas and supplied the bedroom light fittings throughout the Hotel.

Vipp C himn e y Hou se Copenhagen
Designers: Studio David Thulstrup Photography: Irina Boersma & Hampus Berndtson Chimney House is a stunning architectural and interior design project for which virtually everything was specially designed. In 2018, Studio David Thulstrup completed the interior design of Chimney House, a stunning architectural and interior design project for which virtually everything was specially designed - from an additional level, to a dramatic steel staircase and bespoke door handles. Created for VIPP, Chimney House incorporates bold architectural interventions that honour the original structure of the heritagelisted former water pumping station but add a cutting- edge contemporary overlay. Chimney House takes its name from its distinctive 35-metre high minaret shaped chimney, added to the 1902 building in 1928, and restored during this yearlong project.
38
39
40
The main structural change was a new upper level in steel that follows the gabled roof-line of the original brick building and acts as a modern counterpoint. Existing arched windows were extended to ground level and turned into steel-framed glass doors, and a deep cut was made into one façade leading to a new external terrace. To turn the building into a two-bedroom residence, Thulstrup and his team added a second floor and set a monolithic concrete box within the old brick frame, opening up the building with big windows through the original arches. Northern Lights were instructed to realise Thulstrup’s eye-opening design concepts for the contemporary interior. The real challenge was to create a lighting solution that met the purpose of practicality and would span across two floors, as well as adding a uniquely modern twist on residential lighting. The pitched roof of the new level is left exposed, and its generous height is accentuated by three identical five-metre long pendants comprising of tiered sandblasted Perspex discs, housed upon polished stainless steel poles. Our skilled artisans manufactured the show-stopping pendants precisely so that they could suspend in harmony from the exposed roof. The Chimney House will become the third outpost of VIPP Hotel, immersive spaces available for short-term stays that show the evolution of the iconic Danish brand.

O atl an d s Park Ho t el Surrey
Designers: 4M Group Photography: Michael Franke A venue steeped in history, the home to previous Kings and Queens of England, Oatlands Park Hotel is one of the finest hotels in Surrey. Following over ten million pounds of investment to date towards extensive and careful renovations over the last four years, the hotel is teeming with inspirational features that pay homage to its rich heritage. The owners have carefully and lovingly restored several of the key features in this incredible building and transformed public areas with a new glass ceiling guest foyer and a new restaurant and bar - The Mulberry and Bar 1509. The multistage refurbishment project started back in 2016 intending to retain historic features alongside a fresh contemporary style, to ensure the hotel is kept at the very forefront of the marketplace, meeting the high expectations of both its corporate and leisure clientele who come from all over the world to stay here. Northern lights were privileged to play a part in this fine establishment’s renovation by providing a showstopping feature to the most commonly visited area of the hotel - the lobby. Our handcrafted bespoke brass finish and glass chandelier looks down from a focal position, framed by glass skylight and dome - a classic symbol of the luxurious past in this historic venue.
42
43
44
The goal was to create a comfortable space welcoming guests to the hotel lobby, bar and grounds, encouraging customers to walk around and interact. Working with the concept of the client, the ambitious idea comprised of an asymmetric series of rings instead of the simple concentric tiered chandelier option. The proposed chandelier was intended to sit below the newly installed glass panel skylight and therefore not to baffle the light flooding into the reception area. There were challenges from the beginning; notably the weight restrictions, and with such a large chandelier, the initial mild steel structure model that our designers created was three times over the maximum weight allowance. Therefore, we had to change how we approached the design and utilise alternative materials in the manufacturing process. We used a large modular slimline design, with minimal heavy structure, entirely in aluminium. Even the installation posed many questions regarding the minimal fixing points to the recess below the glass skylight and ensuring the integrity & safety of the piece. Rigorous testing and site visits working alongside the Oatlands engineering team ensured a solution was found that satisfied the technical and aesthetic brief of the project. The perimeter was dressed in a series of undulating clear fluted glass tubes to ensure as much light could bypass the structure from the aforementioned skylight and brass antiqued tubes to offset the delicacy of the glass. Illuminated entirely with LED, we ensured each tier would get a uniform glow to accentuate the decorative perimeter tubes and create a warm ambient glow for the area during the evening.

Mon ck s London
Designers: Fettle Photography: Abi Dillon Situated within a period building, Moncks is a comfortable neighbourhood establishment nestled between some of London’s most exclusive restaurants, bars and galleries. Named in honour of Sir Christopher Monck, the 17th-century maverick and Mayfair resident who owned the nearby Clarendon House, Moncks of Dover Street is an all-day neighbourhood brasserie that serves up crowd-pleasing classics from a delicious full English breakfast to a range of French brasseries classics and American burgers. The design team for Moncks of Dover Street wanted to create a warm and inviting restaurant and welcoming dining experience with a character that complements the classic and cosmopolitan food being served.
46
47
48
Fettle has designed the space to reflect the Georgian architecture and heritage of Dover Street and conveys a timeless aesthetic as if it has always been there. The interior palette of Moncks is traditionally British, steeped in rich oxblood reds and royal blues with layered details and intricacies providing a modern twist. Fettle has maximised the floor plan and utilised natural light through both the front and rear areas to create two contrasting offerings within the same space. Northern Lights were privileged to realise the brief set out by Fettle by designing and manufacturing a range of bespoke lighting fixtures that would marry well with their considered interior. Multi-arm brass chandeliers complete with matt opal glass spheres adorn the ceilings in the bar and restaurant areas, which are waxed during the manufacturing process to allow for natural ageing. The statement design of the chandeliers follows a distinctive form that allows light to pass with a diffused aura in every direction. Measuring a metre in diameter, the beautifully curated fixtures provide a focal point in an already eye-catching environment. A timeless design comes to life through the placement of multiple bespoke antique brass table lamps that sit upon the eight-metrelong aged pewter bar. Each lamp is complete with an off-white silk shade with edging detail and linear fluting. The boutique-styled fixtures play a considerable part in forming the bar’s classic Parisian aesthetic. A high gloss paint finish enlivens the bar’s under counter. In contrast, a tiered timber back bar with bespoke antique mirror and blue glass panels provide a contemporary touch to the traditional design. Fettle Design have created an inviting space for leisurely dining, utilising rich and luxurious material and finishes with fine detailing and contrasting yet complementary quirky artwork.

Designers: Jayne Nelson Interiors Photography: Richard Blaxill With a history reaching beyond 500 years, The George sits proudly in the very heart of Colchester’s thriving town centre. The hotel is part of a collection of 13 venues – Surya Hotels, which have other hotels in Essex, such as The Kingscliff Hotel in Holland on Sea. Having been such a prominent fixture of the high street, until recently The George has been closed for restoration works, but the wait was certainly worth it. With Surya Hotel Group now at the helm of the operation, the hotel has been completely revamped whilst working with Colchester Council, a team of designers, restorers, and specialist contractors throughout the renovation process. There are 49 rooms, all full of contemporary and rustic touches, period features and exposed beams. Northern Lights was thrilled to realise the vision of Essex-based interior designer Jayne Nelson for the carefully curated hotel by providing bespoke lighting from our ever-growing catalogue of handmade fixtures. The lighting specified for the project had to complement the vibrant palettes that change from room to room, which include beautifully woven patterns and luxurious furnishings.

Our focus was based mainly on bedroom lighting and various other public areas throughout the hotel. In the Claudius Suite, our Hilliard wall lights are displayed on either side of the charmingly decorated bed. The elegant Old English Brass details are paired with hand-applied plated nickel backplates and completed with pearl linen drum shades. Placed beside the mirror in the bedroom is our show-stopping Bartok wall light. Handcrafted Old English Brass meets matt opal glass to form a touch of opulence that rounds the room off perfectly. In the Boudicea Suite, our highly sought after Castro wall lamps sit flush to a contemporarily decorated wall and provide a stark contrast to the intricately woven headboard of the bed. Our Castro wall lamps originate from a classic design incorporating Italian brass cast cones, backplates and bases. Finished in our rich bronze patina, the lamps play with the room’s scheme by marrying with the brushed light switches and picture frames. Our Castro lamps can also be found in The George Suite. Elsewhere, our bespoke bronze leaf pendant with laser-cut leaf details sits above a social area with beautifully arranged crushed velvet and leather seating. The intricacy of the pendant’s leaf shapes and the gaps within the shade provides an incredibly complex lighting display that catches the eye from afar. A reeded glass box light is fixed to a pillar nearby, providing further illumination to the intimate seating area. Our Solti Twin wall light also appears in another corner of the room, matching perfectly with the rustic wooden details displayed through the coffee table and tan leather furniture. In the restaurant, our Bartok wall lamps and bidirectional, single and double Solti wall lamps complement each other effortlessly. Georgian brass meets exquisitely crafted clear fluted glass to create a subtle yet warming source of light. The Old English brass antique finish to the Bartok wall light provides a distinctive and complementary contrast to the elaborate floral wallpaper framing the fitting. The upstairs dining area is a cluster of our Aurelia pendants. Inspired by textile designs from the 1950s and then abstracting the shape into a fluid Art Nouveau form, the cluster of lasercut fixtures are displayed in flamed blackened steel, a modern yet painterly finish with different depths of tone and elements of bronze within the patina.

The scope of lighting required for this project was incredibly diverse, with everything from statement chandeliers to subtle banquet table lighting required to complete the restaurant’s aesthetic. The lower floor is an enticing trip down memory lane, evoking memories of beautiful cabaret suites with Art Deco influences spread throughout. Each table on the lower floor is adorned with our chic brushed brass table lamps, each complete with a spearmint fabric shade to marry with the beautiful pastel palette introduced by Studio Two. Our bartop lamps comprise a hand-blown opal ribbed globe atop a handcrafted light antique stem. The provocative floral backdrop presents a stark contrast to the classically styled lighting. Elsewhere, light antique brass wall lamps produce a subtly warming bi-directional light source. The amber-tinted glass is paired perfectly with an inner fabric shade. Additionally, sitting on the adjacent walls are our expertly crafted light antique brass twin wall lamps. The cleverly considered design combines curved stems fixed to a dark stained wood backplate and completed with conical jute fabric shades. The decor takes on a much lighter powder-pink and mint-green hues with delicately arranged floral compositions to match throughout the main floor. The bar area is illuminated by our brushed brass and white gloss powder-coated pendants. The reflective trio of conical shades provides ample lighting to enhance the stunning colour arrangement of the bar below. Elsewhere, we pay homage to the botanical theme running throughout the venue with our flower-inspired wall sconce. The 3D-elevated laser-cut fixture comprises stacked, light antique brass plates that house a threaded glass globe. Our statement piece is the star of the show in the private dining area on the top floor. Shrouded by a checkered coffee-caramel curtain and decorated with contemporary paintings, the wellconsidered banquet area is ornamented by our light antique brass chandelier with polished acrylic edges. The remarkable installation is embellished with reflective ‘pill’ shaped acrylic plates that each house threaded glass globes. The metre-wide fitting provides an eye-catching light source that adds to the grandeur of this private nook of the restaurant.

Hi lton L on don Croydon London
Designers: ICA Photography: Julian Franklin Gone are the days when the eight miles separating Croydon from London meant it was considered the perfect rural town to host the UK’s first international airport. Croydon is now a destination in its own right as a hub for some of the UK’s most ambitious and exciting start-up businesses. The newly refurbished Hilton London Croydon, which is situated next to the historic airport, pays homage to the grandeur of travel while also catering to the clientele’s modern needs who use the space for both business and pleasure. Thoughtfully designed by ICA, the Glasgow-based powerhouse, the first thing you notice when you walk through the hotel entrance is the double floor atrium with an immensely theatrical yet deceptively delicate, double-tiered chandelier. This modern centrepiece measures 5m across and 3m in length and has 52 tube drops in a hand-applied bespoke brass finish suspended from a blackened steel frame. To warmly diffuse the light and create volume but not weight, half of the tubes have a machine-cut acrylic disc that the illuminated LED tips bounce off.

Elsewhere, our designers echoed the impressive foyer chandelier by providing a similarly designed pendant to sit over officestyled meeting desks. The same brushed brass tube lighting sits neatly above the desk to provide immersive lighting for those meeting beneath it, benefiting from a smart blackened steel frame with matching drop rods and ceiling roses for additional style and substance. In the bar area, single drop pendant lighting styled on our iconic foyer chandelier has been lined above the bar seating to marry with the surrounding communal areas’ aesthetic. Each light is complete with an acrylic disc and a matching brass ceiling plate. We also created a brushed brass globe pendant that sits above a single dining table to the back of the communal area, marrying with the other wonderful brass elements displayed throughout the scheme but with a slight tweak. The threaded matt opal globes emit a warming light that enhances the stunning hand-applied finish on the Deco-inspired arms. Finally, the communal seating area is graced with our Deco-inspired brushed brass floor lights. Benefiting from brass detailing on the underside of the lamps, each lamp has been internally weighted to stabilise the fixtures and keep them anchored to their respective areas. With our bespoke lighting along with the exquisitely upholstered furniture by Furniture Fusion, ICA have created a Hotel that truly represents the new Croydon while respecting its past.

Northern Lights were engaged to realise the brief set by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, which was to achieve a level of opulence through quality bespoke lighting that would complement the luxurious design of the entire hotel. Sette restaurant is the first London location of New York City’s Scarpetta Restaurants, bringing authentic Italian food from the heart of Manhattan with its inimitable flair. Sette has been designed by the esteemed Thomas Juul-Hansen, who is also credited with designing the flagship Scarpetta NYC location in the trendy NoMad neighbourhood in Manhattan. Sette Restaurant’s ceiling is adorned with our bespoke curved pendant fixtures. The handcrafted appliances comprise an expertly manufactured blackened steel frame with a contrasting light linen fabric shade wrapped around to diffuse the light emitted from within. The fixtures are fitted with hinged panels to allow access to the lamps, whilst the panel’s seams act as a method of ventilation to prevent overheating. Complementing the statement fixtures are a series of smaller wall sconces that comprise blackened steel wall plates and matte opal acrylic tubes. In true ‘Dolce Vita’ style, the evenings continue after dinner downstairs in the ‘underground’ bar Nolita Social - which like Sette, is independently operated by LDV Hospitality. Named after New York’s most charming neighbourhood, North of Little Italy, Nolita Social brings the energy of ‘the New York night’ to London. The eclectic interior of this fabulous hideaway is complemented perfectly by our brushed brass bar-top table lamps. The brass cone shades create a warm and atmospheric ambience enhancing the design intent for this private and secluded area.
