Annual Report 2011–12

MISSION We will be an educational option and resource for every family that chooses listening and spoken language as the way to help their child with hearing loss reach their full potential.

Hearing, listening, talking. Dear parents, families and friends, At Northern Voices, we believe it is possible for children with hearing loss to listen, speak and attain the same developmental milestones as their hearing peers. And, our teachers and parents make it happen. We know that the years from birth to age five are important to the social, cognitive and educational development of every child. For a child with hearing loss, these years are especially critical. With early intervention, parent education – and, let’s face it – hard work and time-intensive instruction, students at Northern Voices are matching, even surpassing, their hearing peers. In the 2011–12 school year, our 13th year of operation, we served 35 students and happily graduated 11. And we cheered as our oldest alum earned her high school diploma, several scholarships and college admission. Surely, in the years to come, many more Northern Voices graduates will achieve the same outcome – and that makes Northern Voices a tremendous investment. Thank you to all of the families, teachers, volunteers and funders who have invested in Northern Voices. By giving your time, talent and treasure, you make it possible for children with hearing loss to reach their full potential. Sincerely,

Erin Loavenbruck, Executive Director

Off to a Good Start PARENT-INFANT PROGRAM Northern Voices works to empower parents to communicate with their young children with hearing loss through listening and spoken language. This means helping parents to understand about hearing loss and communication options, and how hearing loss can impact communication development. When parents learn how to teach their child to talk, it strengthens the parent-child bond and promotes future language development. It is never too early to begin working on listening and spoken language with a child who has hearing loss. Whether or not a child has yet received hearing aids or cochlear implants, parents can learn techniques and skills for talking with their child.

Early intervention is a major key to ensuring the best outcomes: Research indicates that children whose hearing losses were identified in the first six months of life, and who received intervention services, developed language within the normal range.

Early Intervention TODDLER PROGRAM Children transition into the Toddler Program when they are ready to begin social interactions in small group settings, usually between 18 months and two years old. Available in the mornings, each child attends as appropriate for him or her – younger children may come only two days a week while older children may come all five days. Teachers continue to help parents learn strategies and techniques for communicating with their child and encouraging development. The Toddler Program features large group activities, small group teaching, and one-on-one sessions with teachers uniquely trained in teaching oral deaf education. Individual sessions focus on vocabulary, speech and language skills, and listening skills, while group activities allow for learning and observation of other typical child development skills, such as social skills, cognitive skills, and fine and gross motor skills, in a linguistically rich, supportive environment.

Ready to Succeed SCHOOL PROGRAM Northern Voices offers fullday school programs to help children ages three and up enter school ready to succeed. Many students transition into kindergarten, but depending on a child’s progress, he or she may transition as early as preschool or not until first grade. The Discovery Room is geared toward children ages three to five and features typical preschool activities. Older students, ages five and up, spend their time in the Learning Center, participating in activities and learning skills appropriate to kindergarten classrooms. Students in both classrooms continue to work in a small group setting with teachers uniquely trained in teaching oral deaf education.

WE GET RESULTS! 2011–12 Assessment Data Our students have language levels at or above the levels of their hearing peers.

In the Spotlight Robyn Kirk Ask Robyn Kirk about her job, and she’ll tell you she’s part teacher, part coach, part cheerleader and part counselor. “It’s definitely a mix,” she says with a broad smile. “And I love every moment of it.” Kirk is a Teacher of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing at Northern Voices, working one-on-one with young children – in many cases younger than 18 months old – along with their parents and families. Her goal is to give parents the tools they need to create a consistent, supportive learning environment. “So much of what we do with parents is help them think through how to make each situation a learning opportunity,” she says. “The early months are an extraordinarily stressful time for parents and families. It’s difficult, it’s confusing and it’s emotional. And my role is to be there for these families, giving them concrete steps to take and encouraging them every step of the way.” While challenging, this early, whole-family approach to deaf education is absolutely crucial for the future success of the child, Kirk says. In fact, early intervention is another focus area of hers. Last year, Kirk coordinated Northern Voices’ community outreach efforts to connect with local audiologists and other specialists about Northern Voices and the importance of early intervention. “The benefits to early education are well-documented,” she says. “These kids have endless potential, but we need to get to them early. If we do, there’s no doubt in my mind we can prepare them to enter kindergarten with their friends, remain mainstreamed throughout high school and go on to do amazing things.”

Teen Scene Michael and his parents, Julie and Mark, have been a part of the Northern Voices family for quite some time. Michael, now an active 16-year-old, was one of the first students to attend Northern Voices 13 years ago. “Northern Voices holds such a special place in our hearts,” says Julie. “It had an amazing impact on the person Michael is today.” So when Michael commented that he wanted to reconnect with his Northern Voices classmates, Julie and Mark began reaching out to some of the first families they met at Northern Voices, and the idea for Teen Scene was born. Julie says, “All of the parents that we’ve talked with have been very supportive. We all have teenagers now and are very busy, but the bonds that we formed many years ago are still strong. It’s nice for the kids to get together in a place where they can be themselves, 100 percent of the time. Even more, it provides an opportunity for alumni parents to ask questions about IEPs and talk about solutions for dealing with challenges related to school and activities. It’s a great time, and the kids are truly an amazing, talented, polite group of teens.” Teen Scene meets a few times each year, and each meeting is activity-oriented – some with a service angle (Feed My Starving Children, babysitting at Northern Voices) and others just for fun (bowling, Valleyfair, mini-golf, trampoline park and more).

There’s a way for

EVERYONE

to support Northern Voices! “Give to the Max Day is one of my favorite Northern Voices fundraisers of the year. I love watching the donations increase throughout the day and know that behind every donation, whatever the amount, there is a story. Our story is easy: Northern Voices had such an impact on our daughter, Tehya, that I continue to attribute Tehya’s successes to the strong foundation that was built when she attended Northern Voices. With every donation that is made, we are building new stories of success!” — Kristin Daniels

ALUMNI

“Collecting box tops is my way of contributing to Northern Voices – plus my son can help.” — Kim Williams

CHILDREN “This is my second school year volunteering at Northern Voices. This year I’ve been helping out with the before school program by engaging and interacting with the children while they play, to help improve their language and listening skills. I enjoy spending time at Northern Voices because the students and staff are great to work with!” — Nicole Nellermoe, University of Minnesota

COLLEGE STUDENTS

“I choose to give to Northern Voices through the Thomson Reuters Employee Giving Campaign because it makes me feel great to know that, with each paycheck, my daily work is contributing to more than just my family’s bottom line. I also love knowing that, due to my employer’s match, my contribution expands beyond the reach that I could have alone. Although I’ve given to many great nonprofit organizations through the years, I am happy to now contribute to Northern Voices, an organization that has personally and positively impacted my family by bringing the gift of spoken language to my hearing-impaired son, Josh.”

PARENTS

— Chris (and Heidi) Parton

“Our company, Xtreme Detail, is proud to sponsor the annual Northern Voices golf tournament. Kelly and I have had the greatest experience at Northern Voices – as our son Sam learns to hear and speak again.” — Sonny Williams (and Kelly Amberg)

COMMUNITY “I joined the Walk for Talk to help ‘Team Matthew’ because Matthew is my friend. And I wanted his school to be able to get more of the things it needs.” — Adelaide Jones-White, age 6

FRIENDS “As Business Manager at NV, I know that every dollar counts. So I opened a Target card. We save 5% on all purchases, and Target gives back 1% in an annual donation.” — Linda Barrett, Business Manager
