The dedicated followers of fashion are having an interesting time this winter.

2021 winter trends are well-entrenched with an emphasis on styles straight out of the seventies and they’re not all pretty. It is a season of extremes and you have every right to feel apprehension.

Take that long-line knit dress that we would have rocked in our twenties. Four decades later it doesn’t just skim the curves, it fuses to them, exposing bulges that challenge any shapewear and can only be remedied with layering. At the other end of the spectrum is the exaggerated oversized look, the sweatshirt dress or shirt teamed back with hefty platform boots to create a shapeless silhouette that is chunky, chunky, chunky. Flattering no, fun yes!

The re-return of the hooded sweatshirt, the extra comfortable home-wear one with fleecy inner, is oversized and boxy and back on trend. Tossed over jeans or joggers that are not matchy-matchy, this shapeless little number is essential for wet weekends with Netflix, or popping out for a coffee with friends.

Probably the most controversial winter 2021 trend dominating the tabloids this season is the dramatic shakeup of the jean.

Our comfort zones have been seriously rattled. That skinny jean we’ve coveted over the last ten years has been unceremoniously dumped by the fashion gurus, tossed out with the bath water and usurped by high-waisted flares, relaxed fitted straights and wide-leg crops. As retailers we have been caught with our pants down, just like Lord.

The search for these high fashion trend setters has been frantic. We didn’t see it coming and neither did our wholesalers. Personally we don’t like them. Wide-leg, high-wasted cropped jeans suit 10 per cent of the population and they are all under 30 with waists and legs eleven. For the remainder of us blessed with short chunky legs and Christmas ham thighs, those highwaisted, wide leg pants spell FAT, FAT, and FAT. First time around at least we had a waist to enhance our curves, but now it’s just rectangle, box and square. There just isn’t a good option unless you have legs to die for.

However, all is not lost, the bootleg jean is a more hopeful option for fashion trenders. They are slim on the thigh and with a 3-inch platform heel hidden under the flare, they lengthen the leg look. Phew, we are still in with the ‘New Trend’!

The dedicated followers of fashion right now must be our youth; young gorgeous girls who wear anything. We celebrate that and we’re very happy to leave them to rock the trend, while we stick to our oversized jumpers, bootlegs and skinny jeans.
