The Jacks started off winning the first five events, eventually winning 9–2, behind a bevy of first-place finishes from an array of Lumberjack swimmers.

Flagstaff to enforce texting while driving ban

lagstaff police will soon begin to enforce a new ban on texting while driving.

The law prohibiting texting was passed in summer 2014.

After it was passed, police decided to allow a six-month grace period where no fines would be given in order to provide motorists time to adjust to the new regulation. That period will end on Feb.16 and fines will then be given to those caught texting.

The law applies not only to cars but also bicycles. It prohibits texting and typing while these vehicles are in motion but allows commuters to use their phone while stopped at stoplights, stop signs and other places in which the vehicle comes to a full stop. The fine for the offense will start at $100.

Flagstaff Police Department Public Relations Sergeant Margaret Bentzen said it is too early to tell what the public’s response will be to the new statute, or whether it will cause a decrease in texting while driving.

“Once we start getting out there and doing some enforcement we’ll kind of get a feel for [the effects of the ban] after the fact,” Bentzen said. “When you have a warning period, most people aren’t too worried about it, but once you start writing the citations it starts becoming very real in people’s minds.”

Another ban on phone use while driving was recently instated

by Coconino County. This ban prohibits not only texting while driving but also talking while driving, with the exception of a hands-

free device. This ban applies to cities across Coconino County that do not already have their own law in place; therefore, because of Flagstaff ’s ban on texting while driving, the county law does not apply within the city limits of Flagstaff.

“Flagstaff ’s texting ban in the city limits would take precedence,” said Community Programs Planner Gerry Blair. “As soon as you get into the county it would revert back to [the county’s].”

The county statute was passed in April 2014. It was given a similar grace period as the Flagstaff law, and in late November the law began to be enforced by county deputies. Even under enforcement, Blair said deputies are mainly still issuing verbal warnings as citizens adjust to the law.

“I’m not aware that we’ve written any citations, I know that we have been issuing warnings,” Blair said. “Part of it is difficult to determine because sometimes when you’re driving down the road as a cop, it’s hard to determine what that person is doing in the car. If it’s obvious, then we would probably stop them and at least remind them of the ordinance. We always have to leave the discretion on whether or not to enforce law up to our deputies.”

There are exemptions to the county law, such as if a phone is being used to report an emergency, if the commuter is driving on private property, or if the vehicle is pulled off to the side of the road.

Unlike the Flagstaff ban, however, it is still considered an offense to use a phone while stopped at a stop sign or stop light. A driver needs to be completely pulled over in order to use his phone.

“If they’re pulled over to the side of the road and their car is in

park, they’re not going to get a ticket for this,” Blair said.

The Flagstaff and Coconino County laws will complement an Arizona ordinance that prohibits distracted driving, which can include cell phone use as well as other things that prevent a driver from paying full attention to the road.

“We’ve always had that [to use], and it’s a good tool, but [the new county statute] is just another tool we have in our toolbox to make the roads safer for people,” Blair said.

Both Bentzen and Blair said the public is being educated on these new laws through platforms such as social media, TV and newspaper ads.

Despite this effort to reach the public, some citizens remain in the dark about the new regulations.

Sophomore exercise science major Clayton Bonaguidi said he knew there was an Arizona ordinance against distracted driving, but he did not realize there were county and city laws against cell phone use as well.

“I thought it was just an Arizona state law, I didn’t know that there was actually a city law,” Bonaguidi said. “The cell phone use [ban] in general I did not know of . . . the texting thing I feel like I was more aware of, just because that’s a standard for most places.”

Bonaguidi suggested that NAU could be a part of the public outreach campaign on the new laws.

“I would say let NAU, the university itself, be more informed,” Bonaguidi said. “[That way] it can reach out to students because this is where most people are going to find out.”

New carpooling service driving into Flagstaff

tarting in January 2015, Flagstaff citizens will have the opportunity to catch a ride to school or work using a new carpooling system called a vanpool.

Vanpools are small commuter vans managed by a company called vRide in partnership with the Northern Arizona Intergovernmental Public Transportation Authority (NAIPTA).

Each van holds seven to 15 passengers and forms a transportation route by grouping together commuters that live in the same area and travel to the same workplace.

“It’s kind of like carpooling, just a little more formal and with more people participating,” said vRide’s business development executive Rick MacNeal. “It’s not like a taxi service and it’s not like an Uber or lift service.”

Vanpools do not offer one-time rides or sporadic pick-ups and drop-offs, but rather operate quite similarly to the yellow school buses used in elementary school. People who need to get to the same place at the same time form vanpool groups, and then use their designated vanpool to get to and from work at agreed-upon times.

“The vanpool has to pretty much operate

on a standard schedule, unless everyone in the group has flexibility and some sort of agreement,” MacNeal said. “If you don’t have a fairly routine schedule, then it’s probably not for you.”

The most common way for a vanpool to be initiated is through a specific company or employer that helps group interested employees by residential area and work times.

“At this point vRide is going out to some of the major employers in town . . . who obviously employ a large number of people, have parking issues, or where parking is scare or expensive,” said marketing manager for NAIPTA Jacki Lenners. “NAU is one of the initial employers that vRide contacted.”

Vanpools can be created through a specific employer, or individuals can join or suggest a group on the vRide or NAIPTA websites. A vanpool must be made up of at least five members during its first three to four months of use, after which point it needs to have between seven to 15 members to be continued by vRide.

The monthly charge for using a vanpool is determined by the distance and frequency of its trips. The charge completely covers the cost of fuel, maintenance and insurance for the vehicle and each passenger shares the total payment,

so the more passengers there are, the less each member pays.

“Owning a vehicle is very expensive, and operating a vehicle is very expensive. And if that cost can be shared among several people, for commuting to and from work, school, whatever it might be, then that’s always a bonus,” Lenners said.

Vanpool leases last for only thirty-day periods, so it is not financially binding to someone who needs to leave the group.

The driver of the vanpool is simply a member of the group who signs a lease with vRide and is at least 25 years of age.

“Someone [in the group] is considered the primary driver, and they literally take the van and keep it at their home,” MacNeal said. “Then [the driver] picks up people at their homes, or [the group] has a centralized meeting spot where everybody parks their car and they hop in the van and travel to work.”

According to MacNeal, each van is allotted a specific number of miles per month depending on the distance and frequency of its trips. The allotted mileage is intentionally more than needed so that the van can also be used for occasional extraneous purposes.

“If someone needs to run an errand during the day or has a medical appointment, they can use those miles to take the van,” MacNeal said.

“Or the primary driver, if they have the van on the weekend and they need to use it for a personal errand or a short trip, they are allowed to do that.”

Although it is not mandatory, it is encouraged that people interested in using the vanpool services live at least twelve miles from their workplace. Vanpools are most useful for those who live far from work and are tired of driving long distances.

“I have heard folks over the years express the desire to have some sort of transportation to outlying areas. I’m excited to see if this fills that need for folks,” said director of Parking and Shuttle Services Erin Stam. “It’s also great for the environment from a carbon footprint perspective.”

Stam also said that, while students are welcome to use the vanpool services, they are intended more for employees that have a routine schedule, rather than a student who often travels to and from school at different times on different days.

According to MacNeal, vRide has already received about 20 to 35 interested respondents from NAU in particular.

Police Beat Dec. 31 At 5:37 a.m., an NAU alumna reported an ongoing harassment issue by a current NAU employee.

The subject was advised on the order of protections and injunctions in this process as well as told to contact Flagstaff Police Department (FPD) concerning a possible assault which had occurred at an unknown time.

Jan. 1 At 3:36 a.m., Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) was requested to assist Flagstaff Fire Department (FFD) with a pedestrian versus train issue on Route 66 and San Francisco Street. The pedestrian was identified as a non-student resident and transported to Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC).

Jan. 3 At 6:03 p.m., NAUPD was notified of suspicious activity regarding the lights at the Science Lab Facility flashing on and off.

Officers investigated the building, but were unable to locate the problem. The lights had stopped flashing during the officers’ patrol of the facility.

Jan. 4 At 7:56 p.m., a concerned subject reported seeing an act of assault of

two victims at the Hilltop Townhomes parking garage.

The witness refrained from answering further questions from the call taker. NAUPD officer searched the location, finding an absence of criminal activity.

Jan. 5 At 12:26 a.m., FFD responded to a call concerning a burst pipe at South Village Apartments residence hall which activated a supervisory alarm in the building.

At 12:47 p.m., a similar alarm in the building was received although no leak was found. At 2:10 p.m., the alarm again was set off although there was no issue witnessed. The alarm was finally silenced.

Jan. 7 At 10:16 a.m., an employee of Cline Library reported a male subject in the men’s restroom who was unresponsive. FFD and Guardian Medical Transport (GMT) were contacted as well as NAUPD officers to assist.

The subject was found in no need of medical attention. The subject was found to be trespassing campus with two warrants and was apprehended and taken to Coconino County Detention Facility.

Jan. 8 At 9:14 p.m., a custodial staff member reported a suspicious person seen in the break room of the Facility Management Building.

When officers arrived to the scene, the suspicious subject was found to be a staff member of the building.

Jan. 9 At 1:33 a.m., a driver was cited for speeding and driving under the influence with an alcohol level above .08. The driver was released after citation and the vehicle placed in the care of the sober passenger.

Jan. 10 At 4:34 p.m., officers located an unknown subject trespassing NAU campus who was requesting medical attention. FFD and GMT were contacted and transported the patient to FMC for further evaluation.

The subject was given a warning on campus-wide trespass.

At 7:41 p.m., a worried citizen reported seeing two cats near the du Bois Center, requesting authoritative action in concern of feline welfare.

When a NAUPD officer arrived in the campus area, the cats were gone.

Graduate College welcomes Dean Watwood

aribeth Watwood has taken a position as the new dean of the Graduate College. As dean, Watwood will collaborate with the 60 graduate programs that are part of the university’s curriculum. She will help the programs to sustain all current success, while looking for ways to help them grow into the future. Watwood will be moving from her current position as Department Chair of Biological Sciences to the dean position.

“The number of perspectives that I need to hear is like drinking from a fire-hose,” Watwood said. “It’s a lot . . . but I really am used to overseeing large complex operations.”

The Biological Sciences Department she oversaw currently has over 2,500 majors, 100 graduate students and 50 faculty members.

Through that position, she has already met all of the other deans that she will be working with.

“All of these colleagues across campus recognize that the best way for us to help them, is for them to help educate me,” Watwood said.

“It’s been wonderful so far. I’m really excited.”

Watwood wants to use her department as a way to help. To help fuel growth, she plans to provide workshops, take care of admissions process, grant tuition waivers and deal with graduation plans.

“We can’t do that in isolation,” Watwood said. “We have to work with the rest of the campus.”

Watwood’s extensive experience in the Biological Sciences Department goes further than establishing relationships throughout the university community. She has also been involved in prestigious programs within academia, such as the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT).

“I was on the PI [principal investigator] on the very first IGERT Grant that NAU received from the National Science Foundation. That’s

a very prestigious doctoral training grant,” Watwood said.

In addition to her life at the university, Watwood is a mother of three who could not be happier about coming to NAU. “This fall it will be twelve years that we’ve lived here. I am so glad that we came because I love Flagstaff. It’s been a great place to raise kids,” Watwood said.

She also spends her time playing tennis, despite the questionable weather that frequents Flagstaff.

“I’m so excited about the new tennis center that’s going to be coming online,” Watwood.

“Other people in this office play tennis too, so who knows, maybe we can get together a Graduate College tennis team.”

Watwood started her position as dean several days before the spring semester began, “A big part of my heart for years has been in graduate education . . . We have directives to maintain the rigor of our programs, and ensure that our students really are getting the best

experience,” Watwood said. “All of that really resonates with me and my experiences.”

The university had opened up the dean position to candidates who work outside of the campus. According to Provost Laura Huenneke, they were looking for a teamoriented leader who understands graduate and professional education, as well as the current climate of higher education.

“So much is changing, so rapidly, in graduate education. We really needed someone who had an up-to-date and in-depth understanding of that,” Huenneke said.

Huenneke was the one to announce the university’s choice for dean back in the middle December.

“Dr. Watwood has shown herself to be interested in taking on more leadership roles over the last few years,” Huenneke said. “We’re just delighted to have Watwood willing to take on this challenge, and provide some new energy and leadership.”

NAUPD awarded grant for increased patrols F

or the 2014-2015 academic year, Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) received a grant for $6,685 from the governor’s office for upcoming special patrols dedicated to driving under the influence (DUI).

This money will pay for approximately 100 hours of overtime for DUI patrols around campus.

“Majority of the time the funding is over holiday weekends — Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s. We’ll do Cinco de Mayo, Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day and any weekends we know will be active for people to be out there partying,” said coordinator for the NAUPD DUI task force Lieutenant Bradley Mihalik.

Freshman exercise science major Emily Durocher said she thought these extra patrols would be helpful in preventing DUI’s. She said drinking under the influence of alcohol is a problem on campus and that most are not responsible “Honestly I think people think, ‘oh I know

what I’m doing, I’m perfectly fine I can drive’,” Durocher said.

These grants are by no means guaranteed and there is a rigorous application to process the requirement of increased hours. Most larger agencies are regularly successful in getting these grants while smaller agencies like NAUPD may not be, depending on what the governor’s office decides to focus on that year. Mihalik also said that the governor’s office had been generous with NAUPD but the grants are not something to be counted on.

“If we do secure the funding and we are awarded the funding there is lots of reporting we have to do. Every holiday, month and quarter I have to submit statistics to the governor’s office to back up what we are doing with the funding we receive,” Mihalik said.

While this year’s grant went strictly to pay for man hours, last year’s grant of $7,000 went to DUI enforcement equipment and an electronic message board.

Without the money provided by the grant,

there would be no dedicated task force and the best NAUPD could do is strategically schedule officers in this case. This allows for the possibility of all officers being on service calls and leaving no one to do proactive patrol.

NAUPD partners on large holidays, such as Christmas and New Year’s, with its sister agencies Flagstaff Police Department, Coconino County Sheriff ’s Office and Arizona Department of Public Safety. Each of these agencies will have its own dedicated DUI task force, and the grant money allows NAUPD to participate in partnership.

Some of these major departments also have their own vans where they can process DUIs. You may have seen one of these DUI command posts parked in the Target parking lot over the holidays.

NAUPD has a strategy for keeping drunk drivers off the roads.

“The bars close at 2 o’clock so that’s obviously a hot time for us, but most of our DUI enforcement spans a greater time period. We’ll usually start at eight or ten at night and go till three, four, five in the morning,” Mihalik said.

There are also certain behaviors such as weaving between the lines, improper turns, driving slow and inappropriate braking that can indicate impaired driving. If a driver shows three to five of these indicators, he or she will most likely be pulled over. But NAUPD does more than just enforce the law.

“Something we do and want to increase doing is the educational aspect of this . . in combination with going out and enforcing this and trying to prevent impaired drivers from being on the road, [we are] educating our community about the risks and the dangers of it,” Mihalik said.

Any department on campus can call NAUPD and request presentations on topics such as domestic abuse, alcohol and drug awareness, as well as theft prevention. The presentations are a useful resource for students who are new to common crime on a college campus.

“We just want people to know we are out there and this is something we are doing,” Mihalik said.

Satirists, terrorists, and Catholics, oh my

C

harlie Hebdo is a satirical magazine company based in Paris, France, and it routinely prints offensive pictures and articles for the purpose of journalism and humor.

Many groups have been offended, but none have reacted as violently as certain radical Muslim groups. Many Muslims are offended by any depiction of their prophet Muhammad, and Charlie Hebdo has published numerous pictures and articles that have offensively depicted the prophet. These issues have culminated in a terrorist attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices by a group of radical Muslims, resulting in deaths of at least 20 people, including three of the suspects, giving a hateful and remorseful beginning to the new year in Europe.

DALTON One of the most controversial results DAVIDSON of this event relates to statements made Pokemaster by William Anthony Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights in the United States. His article titled “Muslims are Right to be Angry” asserted the notion that the cartoonists and editors for Charlie Hebdo provoked the violence incurred on them by deliberately insulting Muslim beliefs on the notion that — in publisher Stephane Charbonnier’s words — “Muhammad isn’t sacred to me.”

The issue raised here, despite the tragedy occurring in France, is the value of freedom of speech as U.S. Americans call it. Why should a journalism company of any sort consider censoring its publications to avoid hurting feelings? Stepping right over the concept of being nice, as if it was a homeless man dying from the cold while our dog sports a sweater from Ralph Lauren, the reasonable answer is responsibility. Almost every writer believes in the mantra that the pen is mightier than the sword as if it was gospel. However, with great power comes great responsibility, as Stan the man would say.

Charlie Hebdo has published many anti-Muslim cartoons and articles in the past in the spirit of satire and commentary, and Muslim groups have spoken out against the company for such actions. In 2011, after a special issue guest-edited by the prophet Muhammad called Charia Hebdo (playing on Sharia Law) was published, Muslim

radicals reacted by hacking the company’s website and firebombing the offices. The backlash to this terrorism was full support of Charlie Hebdo and the concept of free speech, just as it predominantly remains following the most recent incident. However, harsher consequences follow repeated injustices, and the kind of intolerant hate that Charlie Hebdo advertises is a great injustice. Not only does the article itself encourage a culture of distrust and hatred toward Muslims, but the heinous overreaction by the murderers in question leaves many Muslims in a place where they cannot safely defend their faith from such intolerant publications without being wrongly thrown in with the terrorists in Europe.

Now, Charlie Hebdo will likely laugh at the idea of being responsible for the injustice committed against a target group for one of their articles. However, it cannot laugh at the idea of being responsible for the death of its publisher and cartoonists. While those deaths can even be marked down as martyrs to the concept of free press across the world, other deaths in the company cannot. A young man just out of school could have been holding an internship there in the hopes to find a job writing at a respectable newspaper. His forced martyrdom will not revive his dreams of a career or comfort his grieving family. Who will take responsibility for his death? The dead radicals, who are even rejected by most members of their own faith? No, the writers and publishers must take responsibility. Asking a satirical journalism company to censor their material is a tall order, but some intelligence is in order. If the writers will not respect human dignity, then they owe it to their employees to find secure protection against all foreseeable violent reactions. And if the escalation from firebombing and hacking to a small squad of gunmen is any clue, they should be prepared for an even greater offense the next time they arm their guns of intolerance.

My prayers go out to those hurt or killed in the attack on Charlie Hebdo as well as their families. They also go out to the perpetrators and anyone else affected by the crime. My statements should in no way take away from the tragedy of the recent terrorism in Paris; I only hope to raise awareness of the concept of being responsible with the gift of life.

Legislating time

t is the start of a new political year and lawmakers in Phoenix have already punted a bill to force Arizona onto daylight savings time. Lawmakers, including Rep. Phil Lovas, (R-Peoria) and our very own Sen. Sylvia Allen (R-Snowflake), withdrew their bill after less than a week, citing an overwhelming community response against the bill.

Perhaps these lawmakers just can’t stand the idea of using the same time as the Seattle Seahawks, even for half the year.

The origin of this silly idea of moving time around comes from the Germans in World War I, where they hoped that creating more time would help the war effort. Just like they failed to win World War I, daylight savings time has proved a failure.

Many government programs fail to achieve their KEVIN objectives, but few do the exact opposite. Empirical data shows MORROW that at best, daylight savings time actually saves an American The Editor household two or three dollars a year and at worst the data shows daylight savings time costs two or three dollars per household. It is hard to know the exact economic effect that daylight savings time has because the difference is so statistically small it’s practically zero.

More significant is the huge increase in traffic accidents and heart attacks that occur on the Monday following the start of daylight savings time. But at least the sleep-deprived survivors get to enjoy sunlight at a different allocated time of day.

A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research studied the results of Indiana’s controversial switchover to daylight savings time in 2006. It concluded, definitively, that daylight savings time leads to higher electricity bills, $9 million a year for Indiana. With our state’s looming budget deficit, underfunded schools and a superb bowl to prepare for, it seems unwise to throw away $9 million a year just so Arizona can be a conformist. Indiana can be forgiven for jumping on the daylight bandwagon since parts of the state were using three different times before the switch.

Time being a relative thing, Arizona could make it whatever time it wants to. If it joined the Central Time zone, I could watch my Green Bay Packers play in real time. It’s as good a reason as anything our legislatures are proposing.

The idea of daylight savings time is to provide more sunshine in the summer. The average summer high for parts of Arizona is well over 105 degrees. It is very hard to understand how even a masochist legislator like Phil Lovas could think that more sunshine in an Arizona summer is a good thing, something Arizonians have avoided since outlawing that extra daylight hour in 1968.

The only possible benefit to conforming to daylight savings time is uniformity within Arizona. Arizona does not have daylight savings time.

The Navajo Nation within Arizona does observe daylight savings time. The Hopi reservation within the Navajo Nation within Arizona does not observe daylight savings time. Then, there is a part of the Navajo Nation within the Hopi Reservation within the Navajo Nation in Arizona that is observing daylight savings time. Theoretically, one could stay within Arizona and have to change their clock 7 times.

Around the United States, Texas, Alabama and Utah are wisely considering bills to abandon daylight savings time and join ranks with Arizona and Hawaii.

Resolutions or bad habits?

t has been two weeks since the Times Square Ball dropped and people all over the world left 2014 behind with renewed ambition and life-changing resolutions.

Two weeks into the new year and most have started to question, if not completely given up, on those same resolutions.

Fourteen days, give or take, and people have given up on that life-altering change they planned. The change that was going to make this year so much better than the last, with fulfilling accomplishments and worthwhile memories. They failed, as many do, CHEYANNE when it came to successfully achieving New Year’s resolutions.

MUMPHREY their According to Lenny Bernstein, writer The Athlete for The Washington Post, of the people who make New Year’s resolutions 54 percent fail at keeping themselves honest. This is no surprise either; so why do we feel the need to make resolutions, or drastically change something about us, when most fail? It is disheartening to promise yourself that you will do something and most likely fail, leaving your confidence, if not, motivation depleted. Worse yet, some of us go through this pattern of making an unrealistic goal, failing within two weeks and starting over the next year. At that point, it is doing more harm than good.

Granted there are those individuals who stick with their New Year’s resolution until the very end and are successful every year. Good for them, but I personally am not one of those people. As a matter of fact, New Year’s resolutions are unsettling to think about because there is an assumed and accepted societal idea that you can only have a resolution at the start of the New Year. However, like Andrew Benkovic from The Huffington Post, I think it is important to remember that if “your New Year’s resolution doesn’t have to start when the clock strikes midnight on January 1st,” it doesn’t even have to be over if you break your word. For those who didn’t bother making

resolutions, I can completely understand why you didn’t. Your reasoning may vary, but I don’t accept the idea that resolutions are limited to the 24 hours separating the new year from the old.

Resolutions, in general, are promises to achieve your goals whether that’s by forming a good habit or breaking a bad one. They help an individual stay focused so that it makes their goal more attainable.

So, when people break their resolutions, they are really unable to form or break a habit successfully.

There are a few common beliefs that set us up for failure to begin with and Alina Tugend, from The New York Times, makes valid points on their falsities.

These are just a few of the untrue myths about habits that I would agree make New Year’s resolutions unnecessary and trivial: We often believe that our personal will, or lack thereof, stops us from changing habits. The true fact of the matter is we put ourselves in situations that don’t allow our resolutions to be success. Whether knowingly or not we don’t set ourselves up for success.

For example, if you give up chocolate chip cookies on New Year’s then “a good habit ensures you’re rarely around those chocolate chip cookies in the first place” instead of openly welcoming the temptation.

Another socially accepted myth is that all habits are essentially good, when in actually “it’s better to be mindful of everything we do.” If we get into a habit that stops us from achieving our goals, how can that possibly be good? In other words, resolutions should not determine our goals, because they often lead to our lack of achieving them.

New Year’s resolutions don’t last long at all and in most cases should never have been created. Unless people start to recognize these myths as myths and not guidelines to make or break a habit then New Year’s resolutions will continue to be failed by over half who make them. Better yet, just make a resolution when you feel the need to change, it doesn’t have to be on the first day of the new year. You have 8,760 hours in a year to do what most try to do in just 24, so take advantage of it!

or anyone who is a fan of football, you surely have an opinion about what transpired in the Jan. 11 NFC Divisional Playoff game between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. As we are aware, the Packers beat my beloved Cowboys 26-21 in a game that has been talked about more for questionable calls than the actual game, which itself was an incredible contest to watch. And actually it was just one questionable call, which was the decision to reverse a call on the field of a complete pass to Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant on a fourth-and-two late in the game.

With just over four minutes remaining in the game, Dallas was down 26-21 and faced a fourth down from the Green Bay 32-yard line. Dallas quarterback Tony Romo dropped back and went deep to Bryant, who elevated over Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields and snagged the VINCENT ball in the air. After making the catch, Bryant fell to the PEÑA ground while talking several steps toward the end zone Head Honcho and reached out for the endzone, and as he made contact with the ground the ball appeared to come loose and Bryant rolled over and controlled the ball in the endzone.

After initially calling the play a completion, a challenge by Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy sent the play to the booth for review, after which referee Gene Steratore announced the call was reversed in accordance with the “process rule,” which is more commonly known as the “Calvin Johnson rule.”

Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3 of the National Football League’s rule book sates that a catch occurs when a player has secured control of the ball in his hands, he is inbounds and has maintained control long enough to enable him to perform any act common to the game. And if you watched the play, that is seemingly was happened, according to the rule.

Now, I should make a little disclaimer. I am a Cowboys fan and I do personally think Bryant caught the ball. I’m not saying Dallas would’ve won had the play stood as called, because Green Bay surely did enough to win the game, but my problem with the whole sequence was that the call on the field was reversed. Had it initially been called an incomplete pass, then so be it, but the play was called a complete pass, meaning that the review would have to show indisputable video evidence that it should’ve been overturned.

However, given the fact that people are still talking about it more than the game, it would seem as though it’s actually quite disputable, and the play should’ve stood as called. Obviously nothing can be changed about what happened. Dez apparently didn’t catch the ball, Dallas didn’t convert, and Green Bay converted two third downs on its final drive to seal the victory. I can accept this. But I can’t accept a rule that nobody likes, from the average NFL fan to the Fox NFL Sunday commentators who called the game.

There needs to be a change to this rule, largely because a game as big as a divisional playoff game was all but decided by the most controversial call in recent memory, at least since the week before in the Dallas-Detroit game. In case you missed that game, there was also a controversial call of pass interference on fourth down that was picked up without explanation by the officiating crew. I hate seeing games end that way, and I didn’t like the call in the Detriot game either, despite it being in the Cowboys’ favor. This rule needs to change.

Discovery Second Saturdays aim to teach kids about northern Arizona

he Museum of Northern Arizona has several programs designed specifically for kids and families. One such program, Discovery Second Saturdays, has garnered enthusiasm from families and community members throughout Flagstaff.

“We have a little girl who is in the third grade,” said Zoe Flippen, a mother who attended Second Saturday with her family. “She’s really interested in learning about northern Arizona, so this is a great opportunity for us to come out and have a family event and enjoy Flagstaff.”

Discovery Second Saturdays aim to teach children about the culture, geography and other aspects of northern Arizona.

These programs, which take place on the second Saturday of each month, combine education with hands-on activities designed to engage kids in different subjects.

There are several facets of the Discovery program at the museum, from spring break trips to summer camps to the Second Saturday classes. Each of these different events is geared toward helping kids learn about science, art, and culture in a fun way.

“The Discovery program started back in the 1970s,” Volunteer and Tour Coordinator Mari Soliday said. “It was a program where kids could learn about their place here on the Colorado Plateau. That program grew into what our summer camps are today.”

The summer camps put on by the museum became very popular, and demand grew for more kids’ programs.

“Our parents were asking why we didn’t do anything else during the rest of the year, and so we decided every month we would have a Discovery Second Saturday with a new theme that was either art or science based,” Soliday said.

The most recent Discovery Second Saturday event, held Jan. 10, was all about venomous creatures. Ecology and Conservation Curator Larry Stevens spoke about the different types of venomous creatures living in the area. His speech, entitled “Venom on the Plateau,” combined etymology, biology and several other branches of science into a quick but comprehensive look at the venomous creatures living on the Colorado Plateau.

parents engaged by asking questions: “Has anyone here ever been bitten by a bee?”

Stevens also asked the crowd. “Has anyone here been stung by a spider?”

Several people raised their hands for both questions, after which Stevens explained, “You can only be bitten by things like spiders and snakes, because they don’t have a stinger. Scorpions, ants, wasps and bees sting rather than bite.”

The rest of his talk was about species, coloring, venoms and other aspects of the venomous creatures in this region and the

large crowd seemed to be having fun the whole time.

After Stevens’ lecture, he had the kids all go to the front to get a better look at the specimens of snakes, spiders, and other creatures he had brought with him. Children and parents alike became fascinated by the different animals on display.

Some of the families left after Stevens’ talk, but others stayed to participate in the fun craft project that was set up by museum volunteers.

While the Discovery Second Saturday

program is much newer than the museum’s summer program, there are several interesting topics lined up for the rest of the year. Rock Art, Growing a Garden, Hopi Clouds, and Terrific Tarantulas are just a few of the many subjects slated for Discovery Second Saturday in 2015. These events are one to two hours long and provide children and adults the opportunity to learn about different aspects of Flagstaff, northern Arizona and the whole Colorado Plateau.

Conductor Marco Parisotto has been given the baton of the OFJ: Orquesta Filarmónica de Jalisco (Jalisco’s Philharmonic orchestra), which is almost getting to its 100th anniversary.

I was living in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico this past year. While being there, I had the opportunity to take different music lessons with awesome musicians. I was honored to study flute with the wonderful flutist and teacher Nury Ulate Solis, who was born in Costa Rica, but began playing as the main ANDREA flutist in OFJ for twenty-five LUQUE years by now.

KARAM When I first listened to her play, I was instantly engaged with her sound, but what’s better, after my first class I knew I had just found my perfect teacher.

Ulate Solis studied with the well-known flutist Jim Walker in University of Southern California (USC), and she was awarded a full scholarship thanks to her magnificent musical skills. You can do your research to learn more about them, but here’s my concern now: January of last year a new conductor was hired in the orchestra. His name is Marco Parisotto. At first I listened to good comments from my teacher, making clear that changes are always good, and that this conductor was bringing out a new sound from the orchestra.

After a month, comments started changing.

Parisotto was not only trying to change the sound of the overall orchestra, but he started messing with individual players. He was not suggesting changes; he criticized their playing and techniques, and offended more than one musician, more than once.

I remember clearly what Nury told me once: “I have been fighting all my life to get a bigger sound in my flute. Orchestras always bite our timbre, but after studying in the United States I felt I was finally sounding how I wanted to. Now I have to throw all of this to a trash can just because a new conductor has such a different

taste for music?”

These words resonated with me. Flutists are always trying their best to get a bigger sound, no matter what their focus is, if you want to be a soloist or an orchestra player, you want to project those lines.

On Oct. 23, a press conference took place in Guadalajara, Jalisco, stating a very strong argument against the conductor.

“This is my third week of my obligated rest to which conductor Parisotto put me in. He argues I’m poor talented to play the flute and that I’m actually a bad person”, Ulate Solis said.

The affected is not only Nury. Eighteen musicians were pushed out of the orchestra, giving space to new musicians. That sounds good at first, until you get to know that auditions are not open to national (Mexican) musicians.

These new spots at the orchestra are primarily for foreign musicians. And don’t get me wrong, diversity is great, and foreign people always teach us a lot! The problem here is that these musicians get paid a lot more than Mexicans, plus housing and traveling expenses are covered, things that Mexican employees of the orchestra had never gotten to enjoy.

It is against the law in Mexico to provide an opportunity for an open job to internationals before nationals. The only good excuse would be not having people in the country with the required expertise, but this is not the case.

Mexico’s musicians are capable enough of belonging to any of their orchestras. Our musical level is as prestigious as any other, and when we think there’s something missing we never hesitate to look for it outside and bring it back to our country. Just as flutist Ulate Solis studied in USC and took that knowledge back to her main orchestra, a lot of musicians have done so too.

Is this legal and fair? How come the budget of the orchestra is so big now that it can host so many foreign musicians and almost double the salaries to each of them?

Labor rights are being violated. Respect has been put off the road. And the selfishness of one man is shaking lives of talented and disciplined people who were only seeking to give beautiful music to a beautiful country.

What I hadn’t dreamt of

tudying abroad was a goal of mine since my integration in the university atmosphere. As a student in studio arts, I dreamed of placing myself in front of great Italian architecture and allowing the history of arts to inspire me through my work. I also had a connection with Italy as my grandmother was born in Sicily and immigrated to New York as a small child with only a portion of her immediate family.

Sophomore year, I began to research what studying abroad would entail academically and financially, which led me to find that my parents were unable to support me morally or financially on my ambitions to leave the country for several months. This news was disheartening, but each term I felt myself yearning for this opportunity to add to my life’s experiences.

When my junior year came around, I had a great group of friends from all backgrounds and I was well focused in my field of studies. My desires to study in Italy began to shrink, for my work at this point had already progressed into a style more focused on desert climates and my ideas of Italian art began to lose its appeal to my work.

At this point I was living with one of my very good friends who is bilingual in Spanish and English.

Being from a Hispanic background, I was able to pick up words from her conversations but could never understand the context, and I wanted desperately to participate and have this type of second fold to our relationship. So I began to look

into ways of gaining knowledge on this language but knew that completing courses at NAU would not prove to be as useful for me.

The next week I applied to the International Immersion Program at NAU to study abroad in San Jose, Costa Rica. I did not have the funds nor the academic plan to study Spanish for three months in a foreign country, but I was certain that it was the best and only way at this point to start my language.

I worked hard for the next two months raising money through my art work, commissions, and applying for scholarships. By Jan. 18, 2014, I had my feet in a country I had never dreamed of being in, and was forced to communicate in a language that I had desired to speak since the age of three in my greatgrandmother’s kitchen, stuttering through the simple request for a bean burrito and glass of water.

The following months of my program were full of selflearning with great support and encouragement from my instructors, staff, and family hosting me. I lived just up the hill from my university in Costa Rica, past the university Fidelitas, take a left at the semaforo, at the top of la cuesta turn right and my house is at el fondo of the street. I was tucked in a small corner of the end of my street. One side of the house faced the street, where my neighbors walked up and down the hill and busses and cars passed behind them. The other side faced a property unoccupied, lush with tall trees and various identifiable plants.

from the jungle to the city, calling for my attention.

The streets of San Jose proved to be extremely valuable to my knowledge and perspective which I have gained today. People from all over the country enter the city to run errands, meet friends or family, work, and sometimes to do their best to survive. I was inclined to speak to strangers instead of spending time with fellow classmates in my program. And fascinatingly enough, I learned not only more Spanish from the friends and acquaintances I clung onto all over the country but also a substantial amount about myself and how to explore this wild beautiful country I was in.

As it grew closer to May, I began to evaluate my new language and felt as though I had learned a great deal and that my tongue had become much more relaxed along with my smile. My great excitement at this time was the ability to laugh and make others laugh in this new expressionistic form of mine. I was pleased with my progress up until this point, but realized that May meant summer, and my flight back to Arizona. I had made no plans for the summer as I was still in this clustered atmosphere of people, plants, and new things to see. I made faulty budgets to convince myself and family members that an extended stay would be what was best for me, and bought a second plane ticket home three months later.

While my semester abroad is easily identifiable as a choice that has changed and enhanced my life and will continue to inspire me, I must say that my decision to stay

longer than just the three months was what evolved my time in Costa Rica into a passion. I have gained so much more than a fluent tongue in a language. I gathered friends close and shared loud laughs in the dark with feet buried in the beach’s sand.

I laughed on couches with high

fevers and tears of frustration in my eyes. I rode air-inflated mattresses into shores of booming bass with feathers and skulls dancing about.

And now that I have my feet where they originally stood, I am able to explore more.

have gained a bit of a reputation as a coffee hipster at this publication, and honestly, I’m excited to embrace the title. I have written various articles about coffee for this publication, ranging from staff viewpoints complaining about Flagstaff’s lack of third-wave coffee shops to reviews of some of Flagstaff’s lesser-known coffee shops. In this new semester, I will be occasionally writing a column all about coffee, focusing on the different varieties of beans, the quality of coffee and pretty much everything about specialty coffee.

To start off this column, I wanted to share with you some general guidelines for making a great cup of coffee at home.

One of my favorite methods is the pour over, which operates on the same principle as the standard home drip maker, but does a much better job.

Life Here is what you’ll need to make some pour-over coffee: Coffee (whole beans will produce a better cup). Right now, I’m using a Kenyan variety roasted by SteamDot in Alaska. I like using medium-roast coffees.

A grinder, preferably a burr grinder. I have a Hario Skerton hand grinder. It does require some physical effort, but it is cheaper than an electric burr grinder.

A kettle to boil water. I use a BonaVita gooseneck kettle that restricts the flow of water as you pour.

A pour-over brewer. Hario has a model called the V60 which is fairly standard, but I got a pour-over kit on sale at Starbucks.

Cone filters. Depending on the size of your brewer, you’ll need either #2 or #4 size filters.

OPTIONAL A scale. This will help you weigh out the proper amount of coffee as well as water.

STEP FOUR Wait about 30 seconds after your first pour for the coffee to fully bloom. If using a scale, pour enough water for your scale to reach around 300 grams. This weight includes the grounds.

STEP FIVE MITCHELL FORBES

Wait for your coffee to drip through and then discard the filter and spent grounds. Having now made a pour over, you are now a coffee hipster (or just have good taste in coffee).

STEP ONE Heat your water. On my kettle, I set it in the 185-195 range, bearing in mind that water has a lower boiling point at 7,000 feet. While the water is boiling, grind your beans. I use about 22 grams for a single cup. They should have a similar consistency as table salt.

STEP TWO Once your water has reached temperature, place the brewer and filter on top of the cup and place them on the scale. Rinse the filter and discard the rinse water. Rinsing the filter rids it of any remaining paper waste and preheats your brewer and cup.

STEP THREE After discarding the rinse water, zero out your scale and add your coffee grinds. Start your first pour, adding enough water just to fully saturate the beans. If you like, you can stir the beans to maximize extraction.

Men’s basketball fights off late Southern Utah

ith 16 minutes remaining in the second half and a comfortable 19-point lead, the NAU men’s basketball team had to fight off a comeback from Southern Utah to secure a 70–67 win Jan. 10.

Rewind to last January, when the Lumberjacks went on the road to play the Thunderbirds and completely dismantled Southern Utah with a 70–36 win. Now almost a year later, with the majority of the same players back for both teams, NAU struggled to really pull away, and stay away, from Southern Utah.

“We got too uptight trying to run the clock out and it ended up biting us in the end,” said senior guard Aaseem Dixon. “We should’ve just kept playing our game, playing up and down and just having fun.”

Early on in the game the Lumberjacks started slow offensively, but that was balanced out on the other end of the court with NAU’s strong defensive presence that kept Southern Utah off the board.

Despite NAU’s sluggish start the Jacks were able to string together points to jump out to a 32–23 lead at the half. The Lumberjacks executed a balanced offense at halftime, with all five starters contributing in the points column. Perhaps the most

staggering statistic at halftime was the 17-8 rebounding advantage NAU held over Southern Utah.

“I felt like we were pretty successful [defensively], but we still have a couple tweaks we need to work on and communication is one of them,” Dixon said. “I feel we did a pretty good job on their main players.”

The Lumberjacks started to click offensively in the beginning of the second half and gained a 19-point lead over the Thunderbirds. At this point NAU could have shifted into cruise control for the remainder of the game, but Southern Utah would not go quietly.

“The very end of the game was fantastic when it hit zeros,” said head coach Jack Murphy jokingly. “We have to do a better job of executing down the stretch. Having too long of a break might have something to do with it, but we need to keep our composure and keep attacking when we can. I thought we got a little tentative too early, so we just need to keep attacking.”

Southern Utah began to hit shots from everywhere on the court, and were able to force turnovers to get back into the game.

The Thunderbirds slowly but surely chipped away at the Jacks’ lead and a 19-point advantage quickly vanished and NAU was only up by three points with 17 seconds left.

“You’ve got to give [Southern Utah] credit,” Murphy said.

“They did a good job of changing the game up with their pressure and knocking down some tough shots there at the end.”

The final three minutes were drawn out, with Southern Utah committing numerous fouls to make NAU earn the win at the line. In the final minute of play the Jacks were at the line eight times where they went 11-13.

Southern Utah’s James McGee and Race Parsons were the two main reasons the Thunderbirds were in the game as they hit three crucial three-pointers down the stretch. With six seconds left, NAU was up by six points and Southern Utah had a chance to at least close the gap, but a game-sealing block by senior forward Quinton Upshur put a cap on the Thunderbird’s comeback.

The Jacks finished with three players in double figures, led

by Dixon with 22 points and four rebounds. NAU completely dominated the boards, outrebounding Southern Utah 41-28.

“It’s important for us to hound on the guys about that [rebounding] every day,” Murphy said. “Second chance points, and points off of turnovers were the difference.”

NAU will host Weber State Jan. 15, followed by Idaho State Jan. 17, in two crucial Big Sky Conference matchups.

DII IceJacks fight off Fullerton for weekend sweep

he No. 2 Division II NAU IceJacks came out a bit flat Jan. 10 at the Jay Lively Center as they managed to defeat the Titans of California State University – Fullerton 4–2.

Entering the game ranked No. 2 in the current American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II rankings, the IceJacks were not only competing against the Titans of Fullerton, but the other highly ranked ACHA teams vying for seeding and a trip to the national tournament.

Due to the ACHA ranking system a strong emphasis is placed on goals scored. Translation: score as many goals as possible in order to have a shot at nationals.

Therefore, as the (17-4-1) IceJacks took to the ice against the (11-10) unranked Titans, the emphasis did not stray far from scoring as many goals as possible and earn a dominant win.

What the IceJacks got instead was a hard-fought battle from a familiar Western Coast Hockey Conference (WCHC) foe.

NAU immediately got things started as sophomore Tyler Giovanetti quickly found the back of the net with a backhand strike after managing to elude three Titan defenders a minute into the game.

The second period was plagued with penalties from both squads, as the referees appeared to attempt to end the physical, chippy tension that had plagued the game the previous night.

“The [penalties] just shorten shifts for guys. Some guys get cold,” Giovanetti said. “It can easily have an effect on you if you are just constantly stopping any rhythm. We always prefer to keep the flow of the game going.”

Capitalizing on the out-of-rhythm tempo of the second period, the Titans managed to find the net on a slick gloveside goal eight minutes into the second period, evening the score at 1–1.

Uncharacteristically, the IceJacks were shut out for the entire second period, which is rare for the high-powered offense NAU has.

The IceJacks returned to a sense of normalcy after junior forward Dedrick Weise found the net on a screened-out wrist shot in front of a crowded net fifty seconds into the final period.

Penalties were a reoccurring problem for the IceJacks on the night as they allowed an additional three power-play opportunities, eventually resulting in a Titan power play score with 15:41 remaining in regulation.

With the score tied 2–2 and nearly ten minutes remaining in play, a roughing penalty on both squads allowed for a fouron-four opportunity with nine minutes remaining.

Fifteen seconds later, senior defender Cameron McDonald found himself with the go-ahead score, launching a rebound from the near blue line into the net to give the IceJacks a 3–2 lead.

Dominating defense and an additional empty-netter goal from Giovanetti in the waning seconds sealed the 4–2 victory for NAU. In the opening game of the short two-game series NAU

capitalized on an efficient offensive outing, defeating Fullerton 7–3 Jan. 9.

The IceJacks started sluggish, following a month-long break, but eventually got their skates underneath them and began taking control of the puck and the boards.

Senior forwards Ryan Greenspan and Greg Park along with sophomore forward Mathew Melhaff contributed an impressive two goals apiece to lead the IceJacks’ offensive surge.

Entering the second period up 1–0, despite controlling the puck for the majority of the initial period, the IceJacks soon found themselves in a dog fight after the Titans brought the score even at 1–1 with 18:17 remaining in the second period.

The IceJacks immediately responded with two scores from Park to bring the IceJacks back to a comfortable 3–1 lead.

Parks’ stick-side wrist shot at the 12:27 mark was his 100th career goal as a Lumberjack. “[I] couldn’t have done it without my line mates, both past and present,” Park said. “It’s a great group of guys and I

couldn’t have done any of it without them.”

Following Parks’ second goal, tempers flared and briefly took over as senior forward Zach Fader and Titan Chase Marhoff tossed down their gloves and took to a physical altercation, which characterized the physicality of the entire game. Both players were disqualified for the rest of the game.

“It was a little chippy out there,” Giovanetti said. “We’ve just always had a little bit of a rivalry with them [Fullerton].

When we went down there a few months ago it got pretty rough.”

Heading into the final period up 3–1, the IceJacks kept their foot on the gas pedal, racking up four goals in the final 20 minutes to cruise to a 7–3 win.

Melhaff was responsible for two of the final four goals in the third period.

The IceJacks hit the road for a crucial road trip into Utah to face Weber State University Jan. 15, followed by Utah State University Jan. 16 and the University of Utah Jan. 17.

Thunderbirds strike down Lumberjacks 63–53 T

he NAU women’s basketball team displayed strong defense, but could not capitalize on scoring opportunities in its 63– 53 loss to Southern Utah Jan. 10.

Senior center Raven Anderson led the Lumberjacks with a double-double on the night, scoring 12 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

“It just wasn’t a good shooting night for us and that can happen sometimes,” Anderson said. “We had to make up for it with offensive boards and defense. Free throws played a big role in our play tonight as well.”

Both sides started the game with dominating defensive efforts that kept the game scoreless through the first three minutes. Although the Lumberjacks faired well on the defensive side of the ball, a slow start resulted in an early 11–2 Thunderbird lead.

NAU pulled it back later in the first half and gained its first lead of the game at 21–20. A few late scores in the half from senior forward Erikka Banks and sophomore guard Brittani Lusain put NAU on top 28–27 going into halftime.

NAU continued its stout defensive presence throughout the entire match, totaling 51 rebounds, nine steals and three blocks.

“We obviously had a tough night shooting, but I thought we did well on defense and got to the free-throw line,” said head coach Sue Darling. “The bottom line was that we didn’t make our free throws.”

The game was closely contested throughout the second half, staying within four points through the first nine minutes. After tying the game at 41 the Thunderbirds knocked down a 3-pointer to begin a flurry of scoring which gave them the lead late in the game.

“We struggled with moving the ball around on offense, but we were able to get to the free throw line,” said junior guard Mariah Willadsen. “We just need to hit our free throws when we get them.”

The Thunderbirds began to outscore the Lumberjacks to take a late 10-point lead with less than five minutes left in the game at 55–45. NAU made efforts toward a late comeback attempt as Willadsen knocked down five free throws to bring the Lumberjacks within seven points, but they were not successful as the Thunderbirds held on to their lead and won the game 63–53.

Willadsen led the Lumberjacks in scoring on the night with 13 points in the game.

The Lumberjacks did not score as efficiently in the second half as their opponent, as NAU shot 25 percent from the field compared to the Thunderbirds 36.4 percent. NAU also had issues capitalizing on opportunities to take more control in the game, shooting 23.4 percent in the game and 60 percent from the freethrow line.

“I was just proud of our effort and proud of the way we grinded,” Darling said. “We did exactly what it takes to win on the road by playing tough defense.”

This game marks the fifth road loss of the season for the Lumberjacks, but only the first in conference. NAU will play on the road again against Weber State Jan. 15, followed by a matchup against Idaho State Jan. 17.

In the second event of the day, the 800-meter freestyle, NAU also came away with a top-two finish with senior Caitlin Wright coming in first with a time of 9:19.75. Behind Wright was freshman Kimmy Richter, who finished in second with a time 9:30.63. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Today was pretty exciting and the best part was that we had some girls who swam different events than we are used to,â&#x20AC;? Wright said via NAU Athletics.. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To know we have the depth to do that and still win is exciting. Every senior wants to leave a team better than when they came into it and this team is definitely better than when I came here. But weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still far from peaking; we have a lot more to go before conference.â&#x20AC;?

NAU continued its dominance throughout the meet, coming away with one of the top three spots in every event.

The Jacks have some time off before their next competition where the teams will split up to compete at different events. The divers will head to the Air Force Diving competition Jan. 29-31, while the swim team will be competing against Wyoming at UNLV Jan. 31.

Flag Buzz & Kickstand Kafe: Reviewing the lesser-known Flagstaff coffee shops

lagstaff, being a college town, has its fair share of coffee shops. Most students are familiar with Macy’s, Firecreek and Late for the Train, but Flagstaff has more than that. I set out to find some lesser-known coffee shops in Flagstaff and came across Flag Buzz and Kickstand Kafe.

Flag Buzz opened in late 2013 and features a large selection of organic coffees and teas. The shop also offers pastries baked across the street at Seasoned Kitchen, which has the same owners as Flag Buzz. Located on North San Francisco Street, the coffee shop has a cozy space with meeting space available toward the back of building.

Nearly all of Flag Buzz’s products are either local or organic, which is good for the local economy but not necessarily good for your wallet, especially as a college student. I decided to try the buzz mocha — your standard mocha, but made with organic espresso, milk and chocolate. I ordered the smallest size — 12 ounces — coming out to five dollars before tax.

I understand the value in paying for quality and although that organic, locally sourced drink sounded nice, it did not

deliver. I was glad to support different producers in the community and state, but I felt the quality of the beverage was not on par with the other specialty coffee shops in Flagstaff. I couldn’t taste much of the drink’s espresso base and overall the beverage tasted weak.

Macy’s Coffee House, Flagstaff ’s first commercial coffee roaster, has the Macy’s special, made with espresso and steamed hot chocolate. A single (12 ounces) Macy’s special is $3.05.

Part of Flag Buzz’s higher prices comes from their nearly all organic product line being. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel the quality of their coffee offerings merited such high prices.

Having experienced expensive disappointment at Flag Buzz, the next day I stopped by Kickstand Kafe, located north of downtown. Being a little farther from campus and downtown, Kickstand’s customers were more of the Flagstaff community with a few students sporting NAU clothing.

Kickstand’s interior is not nearly as intriguing as Flag Buzz’s contemporary style, but Kickstand has the quality beverages to make up for the average shop setting.

Following the shop’s bicycle namesake, Kickstand’s menu has an offering of specialty drinks named to match the style. I

chose a drink called that they called an endo — a mocha with a dash of mint added to it.

Kickstand does have a drive thru, so even though I was the only customer placing an order in the store, I did have to wait a few extra minutes as the barista accommodated vehicle traffic waiting to order as well. The staff was still very friendly and helpful.

I felt Kickstand’s prices were in line with most other Flagstaff coffee shops, with my 12-ounce endo coming out to under $4. Kickstand uses Illy Café for most of their coffee drinks. It’s not organic, but it was a good cup of coffee.

My colleagues at the Lumberjack have labeled me the onstaff coffee hipster, so for this story I decided to live up to that title. I was glad to visit a couple of coffee shops outside the standard Macy’s and Firecreek that most NAU students tend to stick with.

However, I thought Kickstand was the better choice for a solid cup of coffee. Their prices were much better than that of Flag Buzz. The drink wasn’t anything fancy, but I thought it was worth the trip from campus.

archFourth will be taking over the Orpheum on Sunday, Jan. 18 in a spectacular performance unlike any other.

This marching band is an internationallyacclaimed group of musicians, acrobats and dancers who present foot-stomping, booty-shaking and a soul-stirring spectacle — all with wild crazy costumes and hilarious stage presence.

The band is driven by high-energy, jazz, funk and rock all in fusion, making for a show that you have to see to believe.

The band is a genre-breaking force in the world of entertainment — it is an explosion that is delivered to the audience by talented musicians, as well as dancers and artisans.

The band travels the world over, year-round, and they take audience members of all ages, from all walks of life, on a joyous, adventurous journey that can defy categorization.

“Family friendly has never been this sexy,” said band publicist Stevie Jay. MarchFourth has extraordinary musical quality and a visual kaleidoscope of stilt walkers, hoopers and Vaudevillestyle dancers.

The audience is sprung into a celebratory frenzy with an entertainment show that is over-the-top with exciting compositions, eye-catching costumes, and overall, magnetic wild charisma.

“Indeed, this is not a band that simply puts on a show,” Jay said. “MarchFourth delivers a multi-faceted, indelible experience for those who are lucky enough to be in attendance.”

MarchFourth is unlike any other marching band you have ever seen or heard of before. Into their music they incorporate jazz, funk, afro-beat, eastern European gypsy brass, samba, Latin and rock — with so many genres, it is most likely to grab your attention.

Currently, the marching band consists of 30 active members, but they all rotate in-and-out per tour. Because the band originated in Portland, Ore., most of the members are from there, but there are some members who live around the country and either have to be flown in for the tour or the tour bus picks them up along the way.

Since the start of the band in 2003, about 100-plus members have come and gone in MarchFourth. Active members include John Averill, who is the leader of the band and plays the bass, Dan Stauffer, who is the founding member and percussion player, Jenny DiDonato and more.

“I was putting bands together for various events around Portland,” Averill said. “A group of friends and I had the idea to put a marching band together and it just started from there. At first, we had no intention of actually forming a band but now, over a decade later, it has evolved into a modern-day big band spectacular with elaborate costumes, dancers and Cirque Du Soleil-style acrobatics.”

The band members essentially all live together year-round and they travel the country in a custom-designed touring bus that allows for cooking and sleeping as well as space for about 22 people.

The material performed by the band is about 95 percent original. The band members have the ability to compose their

songs with their unusual mix and sound of each instruments/ player in mind.

MarchFourth has an arts project, which is a non-profit organization that is staffed by the members of the band. Their program offers music, acrobatics and performing arts to young people, ages 5-18. For more information you can visit: http:// joynowproject.org.

For an entertaining time with aspects of carnival craziness, to Mardi Grass shows, MarchFourth has it all. Their will be lots of booty-shaking, hand-clapping, dancing, and smiles all around at the Orpheum on Sunday when the band comes in to entertain the heck out of the crowd.

“In terms of music, the common denominator is groove,” Averill said. “We strive to play music that moves people and gets them dancing.” If you listen to their song, “Git It All,” or any of their songs for that matter, you will understand exactly what Averill means.

“It wasn’t an easy sell at first,” said saxophonist Andy Shapiro. But with hard work and determination, the band has come a long way. Entertaining crowds all over the world and making a name for themselves.

“It is the most famous band that you don’t know about yet,” Jay said.

BrewHaha Q&A Everything you need to know about BrewHaha

or those 21 and older who enjoy the Flagstaff bar scene, the upcoming Flagstaff BrewHaha event might be right up your alley. There are numerous breweries from all over that come up to Flagstaff to showcase their brewery and their beer. This winter tasting event is held at the High Country Conference center. The event will take place Jan. 17 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

By purchasing a ticket to the event you can expect to enjoy good beer, wine, food and live music. The event will include a ‘Best in Show Beer contest’ where attendees can vote for who they think best fits that description. Album review: Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper

N

oah Lennox — aka Panda Bear — has finally released a new album after 2011’s Tomboy and 2014’s singles. This founding member of Animal Collective had been making music solo since 2007 but Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper is only his second full-length album.

Both within Animal Collective and Panda Bear, Lennox continues to experiment with musical styles whether or not they make the listener uneasy. Most of the songs on Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper reflect on Lennox’s growing awareness of his mortality.

“Mr. Noah,” a song that Panda Bear released early, is my favorite on the album.

The song begins with waves of noise that almost sound like a dog crying. Then the sound is followed by a solid deep melody and the drums, which sound fantastic. The singing is echoey and catchy although the only clears words I could make out were: “don’t want to get out of bed” which may have been me projecting.

“Principe Real” is another catchy song on the albums with waves of synthesized sound and the always-present steady and constant beat. It is another one of my favorites on the album because it is offers some variation in the singing and the sound of it stands out on the album.

“Boys Latin,” another song released before the album, is has a deeper beat but still contains the crashing cymbals and psychedelic feel, especially in the lyrics. His singing is a back-and-forth with himself like he is echoing against himself. The song is, of course, fun but sounds personal the way he focuses on his own echo.

In a song like this you can see the influences of Animal Collective. It’s just fun. It is dancing music and it has the ability to energize people. But his album is more grown up than this. He doesn’t necessarily sing about more serious subjects, but he does sing about more mature ones. Unlike the days of his youth, he is now a happily married father of two who lives in a coastal European city in between tours, which are commonly sold out. He himself has matured as his music has.

“Heart It Races” is better on this live album than on the band’s studio album.

The song on the original album is one of the fan favorites. But on the live album, it is boisterous, fun and unique.

“Jackie Wants a Black Eye” displays the singing in the audience, reminding the listener that this really is a live album as opposed to studio. The “Lonely Together” ballad is devastatingly moving as the audience and the band converge into one.

“Worst Trip” and “Ain’t It Strange” have full-length versions and show the true dimensions of the songs. It is a unique experience for a live album and it brings an extra depth to these two songs.

Dr. Dog has a pattern of unconventional and dramatic song writing that has produced their cult following. It is truly an experience to be able to hear the lyrics and the sound of the instruments clearly. This is one of the benefits of listening to a live album as opposed to going to a show.

I can’t help thinking that Dr. Dog has made it to the next level in music. I can’t think of many indpendent rock bands that have live albums. Although there are many bands with live albums independent rock has not caught up to the trend. I think it is a sign of growth and strength in the band’s music and presence that they are making a live album.

Again, the only real setback is that I have heard all this music before. I wish there had been a couple of new tracks because it puts a different dimension of novetly on the album.

In the album, in almost every song, there is a stronger guitar sound. Especially in the acoustic, Dr. Dog seems to be going against the grain but still has the strong sound. Some songs can feel a bit forced when others on the studio albums have a flow and feel completely natural. However, that is one of the drawbacks of a live album as opposed to a studio track.

Overall, this album is a clear success.

Dr. Dog has a sound like no other in their genre. With their cult-like following and strong rhythm, I am excited for their future.
