PARK RESIDENTS FACE EVICTION AND UNCERTAINTY

T

BY JARED BOHN

empers flared and tears fell as a representative from Landmark Properties of Athens, Ga., informed residents on Oct. 2 of the company’s plans to build a student housing complex on the site of Arrowhead Village Mobile Home Park. Landmark Properties recently bought the mobile home park, as well as an old motel and gas station nearby. The company plans to demolish the three sites and build a four- to five-story apartment complex with approximately 200 units. The new housing plans involve removing the residents from the trailer park. The company has offered residents $200,000 to relocate. That sum would be divided between the 56 families living there, each of them receiving approximately $3,500 and a 180-day eviction notice on Dec. 26. “That’s an insult,” said Flagstaff Vice Mayor Coral Evans. Evans said most residents have invested too much into their homes for it to be a fair amount. Evans believes the amount offered is not enough for a fair compensation to relocate these people. One resident, Jo, whose full name The Lumberjack has chosen to withhold, said many residents do not have other options. “When I heard the news I was heartbroken,” said Jo, a long-time resident of the park. “It’s a $3,500 kick out the door . . . Some of these folks just don’t have any other place to go.”
