Suicide prevention week at NAU

AU is marking World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) with an even larger event, Suicide Prevention Week (SPW).

Melissa Griffin, health promotions manager, said there were two main factors behind the push for SPW, the first being the main focus of Health Promotions: to promote student wellness and health.

“The other thing is that we’ve had some increases over the past two years,” Griffin said. “We do a College Health Assessment Survey every two years; it’s through the American College Health Association and we did see a little bit of a bump in the number of students who reported actually attempting suicide over the past 12 months from two years ago to this year, when we did the survey again. So, we want to make sure this is a safe, caring community for everyone to be a part of.”

Griffin also said in the survey there had been increases in percentages relating to both contemplating and attempting suicide.

“When you ask, ‘Why are we doing this’, these are the kinds of things we consider,” Griffin said. “We call them a needs assessment, but when you see things like this we resee SPW page 4

Police Beat

Sept. 2 At 1:06 a.m., Mountain View staff reported an intoxicated person in the building with no ID. An Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) officer responded and interviewed the subject, who agreed to leave.

Residence staff advised they will handle student life violations.

At 3:08 a.m., an NAUPD officer initiated a traffic stop near Wilson Hall.

The driver was found to be impaired, the officer issued a citation for underage DUI and the vehicle was impounded.

At 4:18 a.m., an officer checked an occupied vehicle in Lot 12 and found the occupant to be impaired.

At 7:09 a.m., NAUPD responded to a call that someone had thrown a rock through a window at University Union.

Sept. 3 At 9:46 a.m., staff at Cline Library reported a student was having a seizure.

An NAUPD officer responded and the student was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC) by ambulance.

At 12:03 p.m., an NAUPD officer reported a person was sleeping at Cline Library.

The subject was arrested for trespassing.

At 5:17 p.m., NAUPD responded to a call of a stolen bicycle at the HLC. A police officer brought the bicycle back to NAUPD until ownership could be established.

Sept. 4 At 1:16 p.m., a student called to report her car had been hit while parked at the Knoles Parking Garage.

NAUPD investigated.

All leads were exhausted and the case was closed.

Sept. 5.

At 5:54 a.m., staff from Parking and Shuttle Services reported graffiti on a bus stop shelter across from Lot 62.

NAUPD investigated.

All leads were exhausted and the case was closed.

At 8:53 a.m., staff members of the Ponderosa building called to report a person sleeping outside the building.

An NAUPD officer responded and found the person to be intoxicated. The subject was transported to FMC by ambulance.

Sept. 6 At 4:27 p.m., Human Resources staff called NAUPD to report fraudulent activity on PeopleSoft accounts.

An NAUPD officer was dispatched. The case is still under investigation.

At 11:03 p.m., an NAUPD officer responded to a McDonald Hall call for a student reported to have been suffering from alcohol poisoning.

The student was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC) via ambulance for treatment.

At 11:45 p.m., staff from Hilltop Townhomes called to report a noisy party with more than fifty people present.

NAUPD responded and stopped the party; residents were warned about the noise disturbance.

Sept. 7 At 12:41 a.m., an NAUPD officer responded to a report of a marijuana odor coming from a room inside Wilson Hall.

Three subjects were deferred for use and possession of marijuana.

At 1:19 a.m., an NAUPD officer stopped a vehicle at Lone Tree Road and Franklin Avenue for driving without headlights.

At 2:29 a.m., an NAUPD officer checked on a parked car in Lot 66 and found the driver to be impaired.

The driver was arrested for DUI and the vehicle was impounded.

At 4:12 a.m., an NAUPD officer initiated a traffic stop on Franklin Avenue and found the driver to be impaired.

The driver was cited and released for underage DUI and the vehicle was impounded.

Sept. 8 At 12:31 a.m., an NAUPD officer reported a group of people entering Reilly Hall from the northeast entrance carrying a large circular sign.

The subjects were cited for possession of stolen property.

At 3:10 a.m., a resident assistant from McConnell Hall reported someone causing a disturbance outside the windows, calling for someone within.

An NAUPD officer responded. The subject was arrested for disorderly conduct.

s I enter my third year at this university, I have seen drastic improvements all around the campus. Even this short timespan, the university has changed throughout campus. For the most part, every day I have spent at this university has included some sort of construction at a location on campus. For some of our longer tenured professors, the changes have been much more dramatic, both around campus and inside the classroom. In the Life section this week, two of our editors talked to some of these professors to get an idea of the transformation they have seen personally. One of them enters his 41st year at this university.

Also included in this week’s paper is the remembrance of Sept. 11. Now 12 years ago, I remember exactly where I was. Having just the sixth grade, I turned on the television just before heading to school that morning. As probably everyone was, I was briefly informed one what had happened once I reached my first period class. It goes without saying after all these years, but no one will forget what happened that day. With the time that has passed, those kids who were in Kindergarten are now high school seniors. It is incredible for us all to realize we have grown up with this awful anniversary.

By now everyone should be settled into their classes and beginning to understand the workload they face going forward. For us at the newspaper, it already feels like we have reached the grind of our weekly routine. Thankfully this past week’s open house proved to be helpful, as a good sized group of freshman inquired about joining our staff. Hopefully going forward you’ll see their names printed here, I wish them the best of luck.

alize mental health needs our attention. Students need support around mental health, so what can we do?”

NAU Health Promotions started off Sept. 9 with tables around campus to raise awareness of the week and pass out buttons and comfort bags full of information and tools to help combat depression.

There were also free depression screenings in the Health Promotions office.

Sept. 10 was marked by a candlelight vigil in the Union Amphitheater, where people remembered those they had lost.

Megan Roach, a Health Promotions employee and one of those who pushed for SPW, spoke at the vigil. Roach said she had feared losing her sister to depression.

“I think it is important that people know suicide has no friends,” Roach said. “Suicide does not discriminate [and] suicide knows no boundaries. We must stand together, we must fight [to] protect the lives of those we know and love.”

On Sept. 11th the event was hoped to be campus-wide and Griffin said she was excited about the potential for it.

“There’s some research out there that says the continual use of social media and things like Facebook makes us feel crummy about ourselves. Why? Because nobody puts up pictures of himself or herself saying, ‘Ooh, look how terrible I look in this photo, I came in last place in this marathon.’ All you see is everyone’s best of and it kind of gets depressing after a while,” Griffin said.

“So, we’re trying to urge people, ‘Hey, connect with somebody in person, have a conversation in person and just connect.’ We’re offering a variety of free tees and just some music in our large conference room so that students can come in and just chill out and relax and actually chat with some people and try and be present in

the moment.”

A report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed suicide rates have risen in recent years, particularly for the group of middle-aged men.

Other data showed that while the rates for youth my not have risen, suicide is the third leading cause of death for those between the ages of 10-24 years old.

Carol O’Saben, director of counseling services, said her department provides the same services you would find off-campus.

“We offer the full range of services that you would find at any outpatient clinic,” O’Saben said. “Individual counseling, group counseling, couples counseling, we provide a lot of crisis intervention services . . . the full range of services that you would see elsewhere.”

O’Saben also said her department is equipped to handle emergency situations for those in need of after-hours help.

“Somebody from Counseling Services is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” O’Saben said.

“Students who are experiencing some kind of an emergency or staff in their residence halls who are seeing a student who is having some kind of an emergency, NAUPD, can all get a hold of us through our crisis phone that our staff member carries when the center is closed.”

O’Saben said she thinks if people reached out to one another, it would be a truly effective method of suicide prevention.

“There are people on this campus who see every other student every day,” O’Saben said.

“Faculty, staff, students, maintenance workers, cafeteria workers, you know what I’m saying?

If every one of them would reach out to somebody and express some kind of care and concern, the campus would have a different feel to it. I think that’s what we need. That’s what will prevent suicide on this campus is people showing concern for others.”

Flagstaff local killed in Community gang-related murder rallies in light

ang-related violence resulted in death for one Flagstaff resident over the weekend. The Flagstaff Police Department (FPD) responded to a call from the Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC) about multiple stabbing victims on Sept. 8 at approximately 3:10 a.m.

Juan Hernandez, 23, eventually succumbed to his wounds and died. The case then turned into a homicide investigation.

Police were able to identify three suspects in the murder. One of the suspects was arrested on Sept. 8 on 1001 N. Fourth Street. According to Flagstaff Police Department (FPD), he has been identified as Norberto Ramos-Madrid, who goes by the alias of “Beto.” He was booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility (CCDF) on a charge of second-degree murder.

His bail has been set at $500,000.

After investigation, FPD characterized the incident as gang related. According to a statement released by FPD public information officer Sgt. Cory Runge, the crime stemmed from a

rivalry between east and west side gangs residing in Flagstaff. The incident over the weekend was an outgrowth of a prior issue between the two gangs and it was in retaliation for a prior disagreement between the rival members.

Runge said that in comparison to other cities, the gang involvement in Flagstaff is low.

“I would argue that [gang violence] is low in comparison to Phoenix also but more importantly, it is a different culture in Flagstaff and the social dynamic of our gangs are different. There are flare-ups between the local gangs from time to time in which violence increases. It is difficult to say exactly how extensive the problem is here in Flagstaff because many of the gangs run in loose social circles and only a small percentage are heavily involved in gang activities or a significant amount of crime in Flagstaff,” Runge said.

FPD also makes the point that innocent civilians were not a target.

Two suspects remain at large at the present time, 21-year-old Michael Vallejos, also known as “Buddy” and Jeremiah Barlow, “James,” also 21. Police are asking the public’s help in locating these persons of interest.

uch of the local community has rallied to support the family of Juan Hernandez, 23, who was murdered on Sept. 8 in connection with eastside and westside gang rivalries in Flagstaff.

Numerous groups through the city have banded together to raise financial and emotional support for the family. In one day, a campaign on GoFundMe.com raised more than $2,600 toward funeral expenses. Family and friends created memorial shirts for Hernandez to sell, and will host a fundraiser dance at Killip Elementary School at 8 p.m. on Sept. 13. All proceeds from tickets, which are $10, benefit the Hernandez family.

While the two suspects at large have not been designated as dangerous (pictured on the right), FPD cautions citizens not to approach the suspects but to contact FPD at (928)774-1414 or Silent Witness at (928)774 -6111.

Runge new FPD community relations sergeant

I

n August, Flagstaff Police Department (FPD) announced Cory Runge as their new public relations sergeant, a position that was previously held by James Jackson. Runge has previous work experience with Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) and Yavapai Sheriff Department, but has worked for FPD for 10 years now. Runge met with The Lumberjack and shared some background on himself and the issues FPD faces.

The Lumberjack (LJ): Where are you from originally?

How did you end up in Flagstaff?

Cory Runge (CR): I am from the Midwest originally; I came to Flagstaff to go to NAU. I graduated in 2003 with a degree in psychology and have lived here ever since.

LJ: What made you want to take on this position as media relations, and what was your previous experience within the department?

CR: Well, I wanted this position because it is different than anything I have ever done before. I have been a police officer for about 14 years now and this was a change of pace.

The schedule is pretty nice. It’s another chance for me to learn how the administration works and it’s showing me another way we interact with the public.

LJ: In this position you hold now, you have to know a lot of facts and be able to answer a lot of questions.

CR: Well, working on the streets you see where the real problems are. You see people when they are in crisis. I don’t see people on their best day; I see them on their worst day.

Generally, that’s why people have a negative perception of police. They are having a bad day, and then we show up and

probably make it immensely worse.

LJ: Is there anything you will do differently than Sgt. Jackson?

CR: I only had a week with him, but Jackson showed me the basics. It will be what I make of it with the direction the chief of police wants.

LJ: Do you work with NAUPD? If so, what’s the interaction?

CR: Yes, we do work together. A lot of it is different, the NAU department and the way they handle a lot is through the university. The way they put out information is different then the system we use. We try to work as well as we can without stepping on each other’s toes. But our populations cross a lot, there is like 20,000 students from the university, a majority of them live throughout the city and guess what they are doing Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights? We do have to interact a lot because we deal with their population.

LJ: What are some of the major issues FPD consistently deals with?

CR: Depends on the time of year; right now I know we are having an issue with NAU students parking in local neighborhoods, right in front of driveways, along streets and other cars can’t go through.

If you’re talking about seriousness, it’s probably the sexual assault we just dealt with. If you’re talking about magnitude, it’s underage drinking and party responses. That is what is causing the volume of calls and affecting the most people.

The party response leads to littering in front yards, parking issues, underage drinking, and that leads to bigger problems

like sexual assaults and DUIs. Our sexual assault rates usually go up at this time of year. The interesting fact is, that sexual assault rates are actually down from prior years.

LJ: Is that how it is with DUIs in the community?

CR: Exactly. DUIs are way down. It’s been decreasing for the last seven years. We have decreased DUI crimes significantly.

LJ: Why do you think that is?

CR: Well, a couple things, we have changed some of the philosophy. About seven years ago we changed how officers do enforcement. We went to a system (based from New York) basically, we get the crimes in . . . we use computers to generate the location, statistics and types of crimes and we focus on those areas. Every month we revaluate. Another reason DUIs have gone down are the buses, increase in cab companies, and I think the youngest generation coming in is a lot more educated on the sanctions and repercussions. You get hammered with a DUI . . . it hurts, and our agency is very aggressive on that.

LJ: A lot of students are walking home after going out, what is the drunk disorderly or public intoxication rules?

CR: We don’t have a public intoxication statue, as long as you’re not disturbing the peace, that’s what we care about — your safety and the safety of others.

LJ: What has been you favorite part within this career?

CR: I haven’t had a job I haven’t liked. With patrol, you go in and help people that are having their worst day and they need help. There are just little things you do for people and you realize that’s where you get your passion.

Flagstaff community, NAU strive for sustainability

f you lived in Flagstaff 50 years ago, you may have witnessed a problem that can elicit a gag from anyone — a malfunctioning sewer plant. The pumps in the sewer were wearing down and required immediate replacement. Luckily, that is no longer an issue — Flagstaff’s sewer system is in good working condition.

This is due in part to the high maintenance standards of the city of Flagstaff. According to the Flagstaff website, the city works with the American Backflow Prevention Association (ABPA) to make sure that no drinking water is ever contaminated by the sewers. When problems do occur, the city employs a group of certified backflow testers that can assess and fix the issue.

Flagstaff’s maintenance standards correlate to its environmental awareness and sustainability programs. In attempts to conserve water, the city uses reclaimed water from the sewer system to irrigate certain outdoor areas. The city also offers rain barrels to its citizens to collect water for personal irrigation, and has specific mandates that dictate when sprinkles can be used on properties.

The city’s green technology extends to things other than water as well — an annual event is the “Bike to Work Week,” in which employees are encouraged to take a break from the conventional types of transportation. Flagstaff also has two community gardens,

which produced 6,600 pounds of food in 2012, according to the city website.

Scott Donovan, Flagstaff’s environmental protection manager, commented on the city’s goals.

“Our department oversees the environmental aspect of the city,” Donovan said. “We focus on protecting the city and the public, and we mainly focus on issues that affect the city internally, like air quality issues. We also keep hazardous materials and as much waste as we can out of the landfills. Then there’s the sustainability department, which works on helping citizens reduce energy and paper use [among other things].”

As a part of the Flagstaff community, the NAU campus also does its best to protect the environment. According to the NAU website, “Sustainability is a fundamental institutional value,” one that is upheld by various methods, such as watering fields with reclaimed water and implementing recycling bins across the campus.

Jodi Calis, a junior biomedical science major, is happy to contribute to NAU’s sustainability initiative.

“I think it’s important to realize that you’re a part of something bigger than just you,” Calis said. “You have to think about the impact you’re making. If you’re using a large amount of water without needing to, that’s essentially water that you’re taking away

from something else.”

Students often associate “green living” as time consuming; yet there are many small steps you can take that don’t require much effort.

“I have a power strip that I turn off whenever I leave the room, and I try not to leave my laptop running if I’m not using it,” Calis said. “Also, I use a toilet paper roll instead of paper towels because the squares are smaller and I can use less at one time. And the other big things are the three main initiatives that the campus has set up this year: ‘Be Bold Go Cold’, ‘Reduce the Juice’, and ‘Strive for Five.’”

The Strive for Five initiative, which suggests taking a fiveminute shower, is hard to implement for college students. While the initiative says the best way to attain five minutes is to use the order ‘shampoo, condition, soap, and shave,’ Calis pointed out an alternative way of looking at the idea.

“It’s not necessarily that you’re only in the shower for five minutes,” she said. “It’s more that you only have the water on for five minutes. Shampoo and use your soap without the water on, and then turn it on to rinse.”

The water used in the shower travels into the sewer. A correctly maintained sewer correlates to a working shower. In turn, the water in the sewer becomes reclaimed water — the water on campus is connected.

NAU should look to UA for equality, awareness in the university setting

Marijuana conflict can be fixed at federal level

ith the fantastic strides recently made toward LGBTQ equality, there is of course, reason to celebrate. Unfortunately, other important issues have been put on the backburner: namely, the social, medical and legal issues often faced by the transgender community. Although much overlap exists in some of the stigmas faced, thanks to America’s unrelenting conservatives, the transgender community is still lacking a comprehensive embodiment and active voice in the social and political world.

The University of Arizona (UA) is going to change that.

Recently, the school announced their intention to hire tenured professors for its transgender studies program. Furthermore, they also announced a plan to create a Center for Critical Studies of the Body. NAU prides itself on being socially liberal and accepting—but in comparison to movements like UA is making, we’re far, far behind. At the beginning of this semester, NAU introduced Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH), which is a fantastic concept, with the goal of creating the most comfortable environment and sense of belonging for the LBGTQ community.

By no means should such a wonderful concept be undermined, but more critical thinking about moving society into a more aware, less cisgender focused direction seems to have been the motivation behind UA’s new plan.

Susan Stryker is a transgender scholar from UA, who e-mailed with a correspondent from The Huffington Post. She said the program’s goals are “to change conditions of knowledge-production on transgender phenomena, and to increase the scope of what counts as expert knowledge.”

The best part about all of this is the ambitions of the program are primarily for transgender people, not cisgenders who want to study” trans people. Its pursuit is for trans people to work as active agent defining their worldviews and insights into their social struggles, rather than being defined by the outside media and cisgendered people. Stryker also said, “I really hope this is just the start of a trend.

I hope that what we are able to do at UA will show other universities that this is a viable field."

The Williams Institute estimates about 700,000 people in the U.S identity as transgender. This number may seem small compared to the entire population of the U.S, but it’s really not. Erasure of any group of people from democratic influence cannot be considered very democratic at all. New questions and doubts have been raised about the nature of the self, the mind’s relation to the body and even what it means to be person. These are profound and progressive ideologies that need to be explored philosophically, and academically. Yet, many people remain uneducated and misinformed about the relationship between gender and sex.

Just in case someone is wondering about some of the consequences Americans being largely uneducated on gender issues, PFLAG NYC reports almost a fifth of students are assaulted because of their sexual orientation and over a tenth because of their gender expression. Estimates suggest that between 25 and 50 percent of homeless youth are living on the streets, because of negative reactions about their gender identity or expression. Surveys indicate that 78 percent of transgender Americans faced severe harassment in childhood and 41 percent percent of trans people surveyed have attempted suicide — 44.5 percent more than the non-trans population. Is this not horrifying?

UA and the entire faculty who worked hard to create this program (which should officially have degrees available in 2015) deserve a huge applause. If all goes as planned, other schools should follow suit, and venture into this controversial but essential, wonderful field. NAU students and faculty should be aware of the possibility and validity of such a program, to assist in creating a better place for every man, woman and child to live, no matter their gender identity or expression.

toners, rejoice! After the states of Washington and Colorado voted to legalize marijuana in 2012, pretty much everyone was expecting some serious backlash from the federal government. It seems as though ever since “Reefer Madness” and the so-called “War on Drugs,” the question of legalizing recreational marijuana use has never been seriously considered at the federal level, where even medical marijuana is still considered a criminal substance.

There was no way the feds were going to let Washington and Colorado off the hook. Yet they seem to have done just that. The Justice Department announced this past Thursday that it would not challenge the state MILES SCHNEIDERMAN laws in court, creating a huge and unexpected victory for those in favor of decriminalizing the drug.

Despite this, several prominent lawmakers in our own state of Arizona continue their opposition to decriminalization. On Aug. 30, The Daily Sun reported a Maricopa County attorney, along with state Attorney General Tom Horne, are still working to have Arizona’s 2010 medical marijuana law declared illegal, and that the attempt would not be altered by the Justice Department’s decision. Their position is, regardless of voter-approved state legislation, marijuana remains an illegal drug at the federal level, and therefore, use of marijuana should be prosecuted. In his words, “The issue is that a state law cannot make legal what a federal makes illegal.” That’s a little rich coming from Tom Horne and the Arizona political right in general, considering what a fuss they’ve made in recent years about states’ rights.

Horne is an opponent of ObamaCare, for example, on the grounds the Constitution gives the states power to do anything that doesn’t relate to the explicit powers of the federal government. There are politicians in Arizona, most notably Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who have openly announced their willingness to defy federal law in favor of state law. When it comes to marijuana, however, federal law is apparently the only

thing that matters.

That being said, Tom Horne is actually right.

Federal law still doesn’t recognize the legality of marijuana, even for medical uses, and it actually does take precedence over state law thanks to the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution. From a legal standpoint, Horne and his colleagues have every right to try and void Arizona’s medical marijuana legislation.

The decision made by the Justice Department doesn’t decriminalize the drug in America; it essentially says that it will let the states in question handle their own laws until there is reason for a dispute. The contradiction between state and federal laws in regards to marijuana, however, remains a very real thing.

The fact of the matter is this issue will not be resolved at the state level. Until marijuana is legalized by the federal government and approved by the federal court system, there will continue to be conflict and confusion, as those who seek to put recreational smokers behind bars are able to justify their intentions with the Supremacy Clause. As Arizona demonstrates, not even medical marijuana laws are safe, much less the recreational usage laws of Washington and Colorado.

The Justice Department’s decision certainly seems to indicate the government’s willingness to move toward decriminalization, but the actions of federal law enforcement over the past several years tell a different story. The feds seem honestly torn between listening to the voters, who have approved medical marijuana laws in more than a dozen states, and their long-established war with this particular drug.

It’s time for the federal government to get off the fence. We still claim this country is ruled by and for the people (despite all evidence to the contrary); well, the people have spoken. It’s past time the United States as a whole decriminalized a drug that is statistically far less dangerous than alcohol. Until that happens, Tom Horne will be able to justify his actions against the will of the voting public, and Washington and Colorado will probably be dealing with some dramatic increases in population.

Illinois, United States forced to question their stance on prostitution

aybe prostitution should be legal after all.

A recent move by the state of Illinois has spurred discussion that outlines a real problem in our view on prostitution here in the United States, concerning what our policies can mean for the well being of women in the trade and, ultimately, their relative freedoms are in question.

According to The Associated Press, this year Illinois became one of a handful of states where prostitution is no longer a felony, and children have become particularly safe in terms of, “Will I go to jail if I have sex for money?”

Children are now treated solely as victims, no longer as criminals. The same approach CLARK MINDOCK is extended to adult women in the sex trade, though legal repercussions are still available on a more minimal level Of course, pimping and human trafficking are still a no-no, as is operating a brothel presumably. So, if you’re still living in the year 2003 and think you are a “P-I-M-P,” your best bet is to stick to singing the song, not doing the deed, in Illinois.

The idea behind going easier on prostitutes is that they inhabit a particularly fragile position in the world. Often, they are coerced into standing on street corners in the cold and waiting for creepy gentlemen to pull up and say, “How much?” as if that were their name. Coercion can happen in many different ways, according to police officers in articles on the subject who describe the condition.

It can take the form of physical brutality, threats and isolation from society or personal contacts.

It seems like it’s so far away, but even here in Flagstaff there are recent incidents of human trafficking.

When the operators of the I do! I do! Wedding Boutique were busted for alleged human trafficking, people really perked up their ears — because that stuff is horrible. The owners of the shop allegedly maintained their slave labor with threats of death.

They waved guns around and made the lives of their domestic slaves horrible (though they did not allegedly force their prisoners to have sex).

Still, though, around 75-80 percent of human trafficking is for sex. Researchers have further noted that sex trafficking is

a significant source of the spread of HIV. An estimated 30,000 victims of sex trafficking die each year from abuses in the field.

Does simply saying prostitution is a yellow card and pimping or human trafficking is a red card go far enough or address the right problems?

Sure, it focuses our attention away from victims of these actions as being criminals, which is great, but it also still pushes the profession to the sidelines and attempts to ignore it. One issue is there are people who would choose prostitution as a profession, and they’re still in pretty horrible working conditions stateside even if they aren’t felons for what they’re doing. Beyond that, the issue shouldn’t be that people want to pay for sex and others are willing to provide that service — the issue is that we lack oversight and regulation on the matter and leave it up to black market dealings.

In Antwerp, Belgium, a policy was enacted that made brothels legal, prostitution legal and pimping illegal. It was watched fairly closely and has become one of the better examples of combating sex trafficking and prostitution related crimes with policies of acceptance.

They set up a zone that allowed for brothels, taxed those brothels, and provided health services and protection to the prostitutes. If it sounds familiar, you’re probably thinking of The Wire’s Hamsterdam, when Baltimore police made zones where drugs wandered free and saw a dropped crime rate.

The result was, as in The Wire, a decrease in prostitution related crime as well as increased tax revenues for the city, according to a Wall Street Journal article on the project.

What the United States needs to realize, and this is a cultural thing more than a legal thing at this point, is sex is not a monster and prostitution is not necessarily a bad thing. The most important thing is that these transactions happen in a safe and controlled setting, not that our religious cultural identity is pleased.

Good job, Illinois, for making a step away from overzealous laws in our nation that criminalize victims. The rest of us should look at what happens there and think long and hard about whether you believe it is best that prostitutes sit in the shadows of our cities or are cared for like we care for other workers. I guess we could also accept the fact that we don’t care about the well being of others if it contradicts our personal philosophy on sex and drug use.

here are many areas of the public sphere — health, transportation, agriculture, safety, environment — in which standards are acceptable and even necessary. Education is not one of them.

Released by the federal government in 2010, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is a set of universal criteria ALLIE students should meet each year they are in school.

WEINSTRAUB The Arizona state legislature formally adopted CCSS in 2010 and additional school districts are implementing the standards every year. As teachers usher in a new era of CCSS in the classroom, numerous apprehensions about standardsbased education eclipse the promise of higher-quality public education.

Standards-based instruction has caused problems in Arizona before. The Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) obligated educators to teach to the test and set the bar extremely low for students.

“There is no reasonable relation between passing the AIMS test and success as an adult,” said Gary Khlar, a former Phoenix Union High School District governing board member.

High school students were required to pass the reading, writing and math portions of the AIMS in order to graduate. Many students at all three state universities relied on the merit-based AIMS scholarship to pay for college until the funding was drastically scaled back in 2013.

In March, the state legislature voted to get rid of AIMS altogether.

Officials quickly swapped AIMS with another standards-based assessment: PARCC or Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. PARCC uses the Common Core State Standards as its source for material. Standardized testing such as PARCC forces teachers to comply with a strict schedule and decreases the amount of opportunities for innovation and creativity.

Although standardized testing is a significant concern with education models such as CCSS, perhaps the main problem with standardization lies within the definition itself.

“The word ‘standards’ gets an approving nod from the public (and from most educators) because it means ‘performance that meets a standard,’” Strauss said. “However, the word also means ‘like everybody else.’ Common Core Standards fans sell the first meaning; the Standards deliver the second meaning. Standardized minds are about as far out of sync with deep-seated American values as it’s possible to get.”

Education standards like CCSS are too rigid; it is impractical to create one set of standards that fit the diverse backgrounds and learning needs of every student in one classroom, let alone an entire country.

Standardization must be replaced with a more comprehensive approach to education, such as project-based learning (PBL).

“PBL refocuses education on the student, not the curriculum — a shift mandated by the global world, which rewards intangible assets such as drive, passion, creativity, empathy, and resiliency,” said Thom Markham, president of PBL International. “These cannot be taught out of a textbook, but must be activated through experience.”

Recently, the Altoona School District of Altoona, Wisconsin adopted PBL in some of its classrooms.

“Under project-based learning, a growing trend in education, students learn concepts — English, math, science and others — by designing and executing projects under their teacher’s supervision,” said Jon Swedien in a Leader-Telegram article.

“They have enough structure,” said teacher Jenny Madsen in the article. “We want to give them some choices.”

Storing up on style: a guide to shopping in Flagstaff W

ith one season rolling into another, the time has come for students to shed their summer clothes and slip into new fall fashions. However, living on and around campus can sometimes leave students at a loss for where to get the new threads they desperately need. Here is a guide to some places just a bus ride away that can be used to amp up a college student’s wardrobe.

Sage Brush Trading Co. Sage Brush Trading Co. caters to both young and old female audiences, with a distinctly rustic flare. The store is decorated in a road-trip type chic, making anyone who comes in feel a little like they are on Route 66 about to have a life-changing trip with friends. The prices are a tad steep, especially for a college student’s budget, as items range from about $20–$100. This is combated, however, by a good amount of sales.

“We have two big sales a year where we bring in samples.

Samples are current items that we, as a thank-you to our customers, sell for wholesale because normally they sell for three or four times that amount,” said Sage Brush sales representative Lori Kluck.

“We just had our last one, which is our fall sample sale. Our next one is in January or February and that’s our spring sale,” Kluck said.

There are also infrequent in-store sales, which occur, according to Kluck, when seasons change and there is an overabundance of inventory. Sage Brush is located in the Old Town Shops on 120 N. Leroux St.

Blackhound Gallerie

Looking for something kitsch and ironic so everyone can talk about what a great sense of humor and style you have? Check out Blackhound Gallerie. Located right across from Sage Brush in the Old Town Shops, Blackhound is the place for fun fashion, meaning all the spacey cat shirts and pithy tee shirts with comic book references. Catering to both women and men, there is a variety of cool clothes to make even the most uptight dresser cave. Price range depends on the type of clothes bought, as men’s and women’s shirts range from about $10–$30 and dresses from $20–$40. Those numbers still seem out of budget? Frequent $10 rack sales should help with that and season shift sales as well.

P.J. Chilcottage Also located in the Old Town Shops, P.J. Chilcottage has a distinctly feminine product output. Prices range from $20 to $60.

The look is definitely cute, like something a Pinterest user would gush over. There are tops, skirts, trousers and sweaters that fit any trendy girl’s need as well as a fairly big bath product selection.

Blackhound Gallerie is also located in the Old Town Shops on 120 N Leroux St. Basement Marketplace Basement Marketplace is one of the most varied stores near campus. With a price range of $15 to about 65, Basement has an affordable selection of women’s clothing that fit many different styles.

“All our mannequins are based on a certain lifestyle.

Everything that is next to them is something that that girl would wear,” said Basement sales associate Lauren Figueroa. “We have an edgy look and, like, a girly-girl. What we want is every girl to be able to shop in here.”

Figueroa also adds that usually the store has many sales and currently a bigger sale is going on as Basement switches over to the fall season. Basement Marketplace is also located in the Old Town Shops on 120 N Leroux St. It is downstairs next to Bigfoot BBQ. Incahoots

Want a look that is original? Try Incahoots, a vintage clothing shop right on Aspen Avenue. With a selection of outrageous outfits and costume styles, this is the place for people who want to stand out loud and proud. The price ranges from $10–70 and up. Certainly not the place for bargain shopping, but a great shop for finding the one statement piece that finishes up an outfit.

“We’re a vintage clothing and costume shop. We look for gently used, still in good condition apparel from the ‘80s and before,” said Incahoots’ Manager Andres Adauto. “We end up having a funky to classic look in the end with brighter colors and funky cuts,” Adauto said.

Mountain Sports

If you are the outdoorsy type, Mountain Sports on the corner of San Francisco Street and Aspen Avenue is the place for you. The prices, however, are one mountain that might be harder to climb. “[The price] depends. We have pretty technical product that has like down and rip stock, like that kind of stuff,” said Mountain Sports sales associate Abby Akin. “If we’re starting from the cheapest probably like $25 all the way up to like $700. Patagonia tends to be a little more pricey just because their products are made so well.”

Mountain Sports also caters to lumberjacks and loggers. It is safe to assume people who wear these clothes often give off the scent of pine trees and hard labor.

“It’s outdoorsy functional meets fashion in a sense,” Akin said. “So, we have cool functional like fleeces and dresses and stuff but they are still for the outdoorsy person.”

Earthbound

Going for a classic and casual Flagstaffian look? Earthbound has the slouchy hippie look covered alongside a hint of urban flair. Prices range from about $20–$40, and both men’s and women’s clothes are sold there.

“It’s not only guys’ clothes,” said Nick Diedrich, a sales associate for Earthbound. “It’s also guys’ accessories.”

The store has a plethora of accessories for both genders.

Catering to the younger set, Earthbound has a very, well, earthy feel to its clothes. You can find Earthbound at 22 N. San Francisco St. Cheap Clothes Shirt Co. If your tastes run a little plainer and wallet a little thinner, Cheap Clothes Shirt Co. has your back. As a customizing store, they sell mainly basic clothes, shirts and other things bare. The products, however, can also be made to order in store. They also sell scrubs for students in the nursing program.

“We have things that start as little as eight dollars. We do custom screen printing and embroidery here so everything on the floor can be customized for an extra eight dollars,” said manager Brittany Longoria. “We can do as little as one shirt or we do bulk stuff as well.”

Also interesting is their selection of NAU apparel. According to Longoria, their Lumberjack gear is actually cheaper than the bookstore’s.

“It’s because we are licensed to be able to print and sell,” Longoria said. “We do everything in house to keep the prices down so that they are affordable to the students.”

Cheap Clothes Shirt Co. is located at 30 S. San Francisco St.

Everywear U If your interests run along the lines of sports, sports and more sports, you will be in heaven at Everywear U. They carry a selection of college sport apparel from both in state and out of state schools.

“Our cheapest shirt is like $20 and our most expensive shirt is like $90,” said Everywear U sales associate Alexis Maya. “We sell just pretty much just shirts, sweaters and knick-knacks from colleges, not just in Arizona but from all across the country.”

The store sells both men’s and women’s apparel for all the state schools. Women’s apparel, however, is in shorter supply for out-of-state schools than men’s. For any person who has had that college football jersey on their wish list, this is the place to find it.

Everywear U is located at 3 E Aspen St. Staying in budget and in style can be a difficult task, but in Flagstaff there are many different stores from which to choose.

The best way to find where style and saving meet is to get out there and explore. Take this guide as a start and begin your fashion journey.

From Canada to Mexico:

Freshman one NAU student’s journey class overload O Matthew Riggins trekked across the country on a bike this summer

Many freshman students are forced to live in study rooms due to large class size

he student attendance at NAU mountain campus has topped 19,000, an addition of 1,000 students since this time in 2012. Half of those numbers have come in the form of yet another large freshmen class. Once again that some freshmen will be living in the more unconventional setting of temporary housing for a while.

For Alicia Stewart Voytek, associate director of Housing and Residence Life, the task of finding places for excess students to live is nothing new. It is something many other universities do, and Residence Life has their own ways of conducting it.

“Students living in temporary housing are placed in a few different types of housing, including resident assistant roommates, Mountain View rooms, or in lounge space,” Voytek said. “The lounges and exercise rooms used for temporary housing were each formerly two student rooms with the center wall removed. Therefore four EO (extended occupancy) students living in a lounge or exercise room have the same amount of space as four students living in two traditional student rooms.”

Despite this, students can still find the situation difficult.

Joshua Gates is a freshman microbiology major who lives with three other roommates in the study lounge on the top floor of Sechrist.

He gets $800 off his living expense (or whatever percentage of that it equates to once he moves to an

actual dorm) and has other perks, like built-in ceiling fans and more floor space. However, the benefits do not outweigh the negatives for Gates.

“We have significantly less storage than anyone else, they [other dorms] have an entire wall of storage, so that’s one thing that’s annoying,” Gates said. “Because [the lounge] is so big and my roommates keep the door open with music playing, and it’s right in front of the elevator, people are always coming in and are like, ‘Your room’s so big you should host a party blah blah blah blah blah.’

It’s an instant destination for a group of people, which makes it very hard to study.”

Sechrist has practically all of its lounges and exercise rooms currently serving as temporary housing for students, which also keeps these facilities out of use for the residents.

“All of the study lounges that were originally in Sechrist for the 800 people living in this building, they’re all taken up by students now,” Gates said. “So where’s there study place? I’m meeting with an in-dorm tutor, they’re going to have to meet in the lobby, but the lobby only holds so many people.”

Exercise rooms have also been converted to living quarters as many freshmen wait to be assigned a permanent dorm. According to Residence Life, the living scenario should be getting better soon.

“Nearly half of the students in EO housing will be placed in their permanent assignment by

ne bike, 37 days, and a whole lot of determination: this was what sophomore forestry major Matthew Riggins had to work with as he made his way from Canada to Mexico all on his own.

While this crazy journey may not sound appealing to some, Riggins was up to the challenge of taking his bike across the country after his summer plans fell through. He had obtained the idea from two men he met while studying abroad in Mexico who rode their bikes from Vancouver to Panama. Having no plans and an entire summer ahead of him, he decided this was as good an opportunity as any to hit the road.

Riggins had never ridden more than 20 or 30 miles in a day, but this did not stop him from remaining optimistic. He brushed aside all the comments such as, “Are you serious?” or “Are you even a cyclist?” that he got from those around him, and set off with an open mind.

The first day proved to be quite the challenge when Riggins ran in to problem after problem; from passing his first campsite and having to backtrack eight miles up-hill in the pouring rain, to having his debit card frozen when trying to pay for his campsite, the thought of, “What am I doing?” soon crossed his mind.

“I finally got all the money stuff worked out and I go to set up my campsite. It has finally stopped raining and I’m starting to get everything set up,” Riggins recalled. “I go to start cooking and my stove doesn’t work, three of my eggs had broken, and my jar of jelly had shattered.

As soon as I found all that out, it started raining again.”

It seemed as though everything was against him continuing the trip. At what seemed like the lowest point, Riggins thought back to when his trip first began.

“When my mom was driving me to the airport at four in the morning, she said, ‘You know there’s no shame if you want to quit and come home,’” Riggins said.

“I didn’t want to quit. It was a horrible day, but I couldn’t imagine how it could get any worse.”

After a call to his dad for some quick financial aid and pushing through that first day, he decided to continue his trip. Riggins saw many beautiful sights on his journey, including the San Juan Islands in Canada, where orca whales swam by his campsite, to the southern Oregon coast or the redwood forest.

Aside from the long rides and exhausting days, it was the solitude that Riggins noticed many times on his trip.

“It was hard not seeing anybody I knew for three weeks; I was completely alone,” Riggins said. “You make really good friends fast when you are traveling, but it’s still hard to not see a familiar face for so long.”

The original plan was to only bike home to San

Francisco, but soon into his trip Riggins decided to go the whole way to Mexico. He did, however, stop in to see the family as he passed through the city, and even was able to spend time with his dad on Father’s Day. “I think that the whole aspect of being home really helped,” Riggins said. “You don’t really realize how much being home recharges your batteries until you’ve done something so incredibly difficult and draining.”

After a few days at home, he said farewell to his parents and headed back out on the road for his final stretch to Mexico. When he finished, he recalled the experience as a positive one. In fact, Riggins plans on taking another cross-country bike ride from Seattle all the way over to Maine next summer. The trip will take about two months, so he hopes to bring along a friend or two to make the journey a little bit easier. While a 37-day bike ride is no easy task, it can certainly be done with determination and support from others.

Other students are in regular rooms but find themselves with two roommates as opposed to one.

Aaron Leibowitz is a freshman astronomy major who is living in a triple dorm in Reilly.

For him, the tight living space has not been a huge problem.

“For the most part my roommates have been really relaxed; there’s not really too much tension,” Leibowitz said.

“It’s a little cramped, sometimes trying to get through I’m bumping into stuff.”

In Leibowitz’s room, everyone has a desk and dresser and the beds are arranged as a set of bunk beds and a single bed. Leibowitz feels his freshman experience has not been compromised by the cramped conditions.

For Voytek, temporary housing will still be a course of action in the years to come, although there should be some reenforcements soon in the form of a new dorm.

“Construction has begun on a new residence hall on south campus adjacent to The Suites,” Voytek said. “[It] will be built and managed by American Campus Communities and will house 328 students.”

For Gates however, the concept of building more housing is bittersweet.

“It would be nice if the university had more housing,” Gates said. “But at the same time, have more housing now, you’re going to want to start accepting more people and you get to be a big mega school.”

A large number of teachers have been at NAU for more than 20 years

housands of students come to NAU every year to learn. Students have to work hard in order to survive in college, but the people who go the extra mile to better the students’ futures are the professors, and luckily NAU is not short of great ones.

With advanced skills in education, many professors travel the globe sharing their knowledge with college students curious to learn. Some, however, find a school that fits in to their life perfectly, and they stay.

NAU has a long list of teachers who have instructed here more than 20 years and are still going strong.

“I always tell people that I’ve been here through six university presidents,” said physics professor William Dellinger, who came to Flagstaff in 1972 and is working on his 41st year at NAU. Over the years, Dellinger has seen the university go through different phases, but the one change that sounds out to him is the school’s ever-growing class size. He started out teaching classes of about 12 students, and now he is lucky to have less than 40.

“When I first came here, nobody had telephones in their office. We had a common telephone out in the hall here so everybody used it,” Dellinger said.

Another professor who remembers having a phone-less office is Wayne Fox, assistant dean of the W. A. Franke College of Business. Fox moved his family to Flagstaff 30 years ago, and started working full-time

as an accounting lecturer.

“Oh my goodness, when I came here you had to look high and low to find a flower. The campus looked bombed out. I give administration a great deal of credit for transforming this campus,” he said. “I think President Haeger has done a marvelous job during his 12 years here.”

Fox still works in the College of Business, but he has been away from the classroom for a few years now. When he came in 1984, he taught in the SBS-West building, because it used to be the Business building before the current one was built.

“NAU has been a real gift. One of the reasons I have stayed this long is I have had the opportunity to do a lot of different things within the college and across the university.

I really like the variety of it,” he said.

Fox’s son and daughter both graduated from NAU while he taught here.

George Rudebusch is a philosophy professor who also has children who earned their degrees here.

In 1982, Rudebusch moved from Hawaii to Flagstaff to instruct at NAU, and has not looked for another job since.

“I love Flagstaff; I love my colleagues, I love the department that I work in, I love the teaching assignments . . . so it’s been a really good place to work and raise a family,” he said.

Rudebusch has also witnessed several changes at the Flagstaff campus, but he has not seen a huge difference between students he had in 1982 compared to the students he has now.

“The cliché is that old professors think that students are un-teachable, that students don’t read and write as well, but I haven’t found that. My sense of students is that they’re pretty much the same as when I started teaching in 1982. I think maybe they have better writing skills right now,” he said.

Special education professor J’anne Affeld has been at NAU just six years less than Rudesbusch.

Affeld is a certified psychologist in the state of Arizona and has a Ph.D in human science research. She uses her impressive academic background to assist those with special needs.

“I work here because I want to. I’m loyal to the program and I really think that one

of the strongest qualities we have is that we really care about our students,” Affeld said.

Regents professor of criminology Ray Michalowski, however, believes the university’s focus on students has diminished.

“There has been a shift away from producing educated citizens capable of independent, critical thought, and toward graduating skilled but docile future workers, which is what the employment sector wants out of America’s universities,” Michalowski said.

Michalowski has been here for 22 years, and still has faith in the students.

“Fortunately, some students still care about the big question like the meaning of being human, how to achieve a modicum of social justice in our society and the world, and how to slow the destruction of our planet, which makes teaching still worthwhile,” Michalowski said.

Other professors who have been here over 20 years include: David Sherry and Peter Kosso from the Department of philosophy.

Sports Men take first, women second in cross country home season opener

fter an hour delay due to inclement weather and two soundless blanks fired, the men’s cross country race finally got under way at the 33rd annual George Kyte Invitational hosted by the NAU Lumberjacks on Sept. 7. The No. 2 nationally ranked Lumberjack men’s team finished first at the 8K course at Buffalo Park, with six runners finishing in the top ten.

“It was a great way to start,” said director of track and field and cross country Eric Heins. “We have a very experienced men’s team, [and] to see the men execute the race plan the way they did was very encouraging to me.”

The Lumberjacks dominated the race despite the weather delays and starting gun mishaps.

“Just like the lightning, you got to deal with a little adversity,” Heins said. “It is unfortunate when you have that happen at the start of a race but it is the first one, working the kinks out. We will be all right.”

Together the men’s squad totaled 25 points, finishing 15 points ahead of second-place ASU. Junior Matt McElroy led the way for the Lumberjacks, crossing the line first not just for the team, but of the meet with a time of 24:45.3.

“It is exciting to have the team title and win the race,” McElroy said. “[It] is probably the best I could ask

for, and to win up at Flagstaff.”

Despite the absences of senior Brian Shrader and sophomore Futsum Zienasellassie, the men proved the depth of their team as junior Caleb Hoover finished third overall with a time of 24:56.4. Freshman Andy Trouard (25:21.5), sophomores Nathan Weitz (25:30.1), Korey Krotzer (25:36) and Alejandro Montano (25:40.6) finished sixth through ninth, respectively.

“Before the race, I grabbed everyone and looked at everyone and said, ‘We have to deal with waiting for an hour and so does everyone else, so let’s all get out there and race,” McElroy said.

Shortly after another rain spell, the women took to the course. The Lumberjacks finished second behind No. 7 nationally ranked University of Arizona Wildcats. The Wildcats edged out the Lumberjacks for first place by just three points, scoring 33 and 36, respectively. Coach Heins looks forward for what the women’s squad has in store. “[For] the women to go out, and to be a bunch of top five freshmen and sophomores and execute their race plan and compete very well against University of Arizona, we are really excited with where we are at,” Heins said.

Despite having to wait an hour longer due to the weather delay, sophomore Melanie Townsend finished third overall with a time of 17:12.4, behind the Wildcat duo of sophomore Kayla Beattie and freshman Maria Larson.

“It was a little frustrating, but that is what happens when you live on a mountain,” Townsend said. “I just had to think everyone was in the same position so there was no advantage there.”

Sophomore Rolonda Jumbo and freshman Paige Gilchrist finished fourth (17:17.5) and fifth (17:20.3), respectively. Freshman Vanessa Estrada rounded off the top ten, crossing in tenth place at 17:38.7.

“I thought it was really fun running with Rolonda and Paige,” Townsend said. “We ran well as a team, so that is what is most important to me.”

The Lumberjacks will next compete at the Del Ulrich Golf Course in Tucson on Sept. 20 at the Dave Murray Invitational.

Volleyball takes second in tournament Lumberjacks host 20th installment of Fiesta Bowl event

n the finale of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament, the NAU women’s volleyball team dropped the championship match to California State University-Northridge (CSUN) in four sets (25–20, 20–25, 22–25, 10–25) on Sept. 7.

The Lumberjacks started off strong in the first set controlling the tempo of the game early on, and were able to grab a 19–15 lead. The Matadors tried to stage a comeback, but it was too late with a kill by junior right side Sydney Kemper to end the first set. Although the Jacks won the first set, they had a lower hitting percentage than the Matadors, which continued on for the rest of the match.

In the following sets, CSUN gained considerable leads that NAU was not able to come back from. As an answer to stop the Matadors offense, head coach Ken Murphy put in junior outside hitter Hannah Hill for freshman outside hitter Addy Lofstedt.

“I think that we could make a few more plays on defense, and sometimes Hannah has a bit of range to run some balls down and give us a little boost,” Murphy said.

Ultimately, the Jacks were unable to stop the Matadors’ offense, and they were named the Fiesta Bowl Tournament champions. This was the first loss for NAU and also the first time this season they dropped a set to their opponent.

“Northridge played really well and I think that’s the best they’ve played in these three matches,” Murphy said. “They played really good defense, controlled the ball well, and their offense was great.”

The Jacks posted their best hitting percentage in the second set hitting .423, but that was not enough to beat the Matadors. Junior middle blocker Taylor Stephens led the team with nine kills, while Kemper and sophomore outside hitter Janae Vander Ploeg were named to the All-Tournament Team. Kemper led the team, posting 3.10 kills per set, and Vander Ploeg was not too far behind with 2.80 kills per set.

“They were the first team that really pushed us and they exposed some of our weaknesses, and it showed us that we need to work on our defense,” said Kemper. “We didn’t think as much, so we need to be more mentally into see VOLLEYBALL page 23

Double-overtime game with UNLV Rebels results in scoreless tie T

he NAU women’s soccer team remains undefeated this season with a scoreless home game against the University of Nevada–Las Vegas (UNLV), bringing their record to 3–0–2.

This marks the third shutout game for the Lumberjacks, thanks to solid defensive strategy and strong organization and communication skills from senior goalkeeper Lauren Weaver. She contributed six saves during the entire game, which included two overtimes.

“It took us a while to get started,” said head coach Andre Luciano. “UNLV is a very technical team that scores a lot of goals. The challenge was, if we could come out in a rhythm and still do a good enough job in the midfield to keep possession.”

One area of improvement Luciano noted about his team is their fitness. After losing to UNLV in 2012, 2–0, NAU kept up with their rivals more physically this time.

“We came in this season with a mindset that we were going to get fit,” Luciano said. “Last year we would have given up in a game like this, but tonight we fought and had opportunities late in the game.”

One of those opportunities included a header by sophomore forward Haley Wingender in the second overtime. Although the shot went into the net, the game remained scoreless due to an offside call.

Freshman defender Danny Muniz credits good team chemistry as one of the main reasons the Lumberjacks were able to force a tie. Muniz was one of the five players who contributed 110 minutes to the game, along with Weaver, junior defenders Diane Buzzard and Sarah Tarver, and senior defender Alana D’Onofrio.

“We did really a good job communicating with each other,” Muniz said. “We did good at playing to our forwards and then playing off each other. We played our game, not theirs.”

Going into overtime after two scoreless halves, the Lumberjacks came out strong and continued to match the Rebels defensively, despite their opponent’s technical assets.

“We knew they were going to be technical, but we should’ve possessed more,” D’Onofrio said. “We had a heck of a game on defense though and were very physical tonight.”

NAU will continue its season with a match-up against Grand Canyon University on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Lumberjack Stadium.

DII IceJacks prepare for 2013 hockey season

he NAU Division II IceJacks concluded tryouts at the Jay Lively Activity Center on Sept. 7. Optimism and confidence flared inside the locker room as the IceJacks hit the ice for their first practices on Sept. 9.

The IceJacks ended the 2012 season losing to the University of Utah in the first round of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) playoffs.

After losing 11 players from last year, head coach Travis Johanson feels he has lost some leadership and goal-scoring players, but said a team goal is to get an automatic bid to Nationals. In order to get there, he is expecting both veterans and rookies to bridge the gap.

“We’re going to miss all the veterans,” Johanson said. “We’re looking for all these new kids to step up and our returning guys to step up and fill some of these roles.”

There are still several crucial decisions yet to be made before the puck drops on the season. The Arizona Redhawks, of the Western States Hockey League, will be traveling to Flagstaff on Sept. 20 to participate in a fundraiser game. Proceeds will benefit the 19 fallen firefighters of the Granite Mountain Hotshot crew.

It is unclear at this point how Johanson

will handle who starts in net for the IceJacks.

With four-year starter Quinn Mason having graduated last year, this will most likely be senior James Korte’s job to lose.

Senior Scott Graupensperger and sophomore Anthony Caruso are also tending net this year for the IceJacks. Both were called up after finishing the 2012 season with DIII. “We’ll see how they play,” Johanson said.

“They have to earn their time. I don’t know if there will be any splitting time or if there will be a clear-cut number one [goalie] but they have to earn it.”

Along with a starting goalie to be named, Johanson also has to find a new captain. Along with Mason, the 2012 season’s captain Carter Achilles also graduated.

Johanson isn’t sure who will take over captain responsibilities yet. He is looking for some players to step up early in practice and show some leadership qualities. Johanson anticipates naming captains after practice on Sept. 11.

The next couple weeks of practice will bring clarity to who will be in the net and who the leaders will be. The IceJacks will open the regular season against the University of Arizona Division I team. The Wildcats will be in Flagstaff for those meetings Sept. 27 and 28.

the game.”

Before this match, NAU had not dropped a single set in their four previous matches sweeping all of their opponents. Earlier in the day, the Jacks took on the University of Idaho Vandals and cruised to an easy win (25–18, 27–25, 25– 23). NAU totaled seven team blocks while Lofstedt tallied 12 kills to push the team to victory.

On Sept. 6 NAU opened the tournament against San Diego State University (SDSU) in front of a packed crowd at Rolle Activity Center. There were 672 people in attendance at the Jacks’ home game opener, and they were able to come away with a sweep (28–26, 30–28, 25–22) against the Aztecs. Kemper tied her career best of 15 kills in this match while the team was able to come up big at the net with nine team blocks.

The Jacks came out to a fast start in this match leading for a majority of the first set, and feeding off the energy of the supportive NAU fans.

“To have your own fans rooting for you, and not against you was exhilarating,” said freshman setter Jensen Barton. “The atmosphere is completely different, and you seem to come together more as a team.”

NAU finished the weekend with a 2–1 record against three quality teams and were able to play in front of a home crowd for two

straight days. The Matadors stopped the Jacks from winning their 13th Fiesta Bowl Championship, while handing them their first loss in return.

“Going in, I think I would’ve taken that (2–1 record),” Murphy said. “You look at that and regret the things you didn’t do as well as you wanted to, but coming out of a tournament with three quality teams like this I think 2–1 is a good result. We have some things we have to build on moving forward.”

The Jacks have one more tournament before starting the regular season, and will head to Albuquerque for the Lobo Invitational. On Sept. 13, they will take on Abilene Christian University, and on Sept. 14 they will face Towson University before facing the host school, the University of New Mexico. NAU will face Idaho State University on Sept. 19 for the Big Sky Conference opener at home.

fter a 35–0 shutout in Tucson in week one, the No. 24 NAU football team (0–1, 0–0 Big Sky Conference) looks for a win as it travels to Davis, Calif. to face the University of California-Davis Aggies (0–2, 0–0 BSC).

Despite being in the same conference, this game will stand as a non-conference game for both teams.

“We’re treating it like a conference-level game. We came off the Arizona game learning a lot about ourselves,” said head coach Jerome Souers. “The competitive level is going to be good and that will require us to play better than we might of against a Division-II opponent, which sometimes we’ve scheduled in the past.”

In 2012, the Lumberjacks defeated the Aggies 21–7 on Homecoming in the teams’ first-ever match up. The win was NAU’s sixth in a row. It was a defensive battle as the two combined for 6-of-28 on third down, and five turnovers. The Lumberjacks defense racked up seven sacks against the Aggies.

Former quarterback Cary Grossart threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns, a 17-yarder to senior wide receiver Nick Cole and a 25-yarder to senior running back Zach Bauman, who also rushed for 122 yards on 23 carries.

Aggies’ senior quarterback Randy Wright threw for 181 yards and two interceptions.

Wright, who started the 2013 season against South Dakota University, has watched from the sideline for the last six quarters, in favor of sophomore quarterback Jimmy Laughrea.

Lumberjack junior quarterback Kyren Poe played well in the first half against UA, com-

pleting his first 10 throws, before finishing 21for-36 with 176 yards and three picks. Bauman, who sits 48 yards back of the school’s career rushing mark, ran for 71 yards on 21 carries. “[We] need to complete our drives. There were times where we moved the ball well against Arizona, but we had drives stall out; penalties, missed assignments, poor execution,” Souers said. “We should be two weeks improved, fundamentally, and the timing of our tactics and strategies, so hopefully we’ll be more effective throwing and running the ball.”

Bauman has rushed for less than 100 yards for five straight games, dating back to last season, after rushing for more than 100 in 10 of the previous 12 games.

“It will mean a lot [if I broke the record this week], it will show all the hard work I put in,” Bauman said. “All I think about is wins. I know the record will come, but I’m just worried about getting a win.”

It will be a reunion, so to speak, for firstyear receiver coach Tim Plough, who spent the last 10 years as a player and assistant coach with the Aggies. Plough started at quarterback for the Aggies in 2007 under current NAU offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello. Scangarello was on the Davis staff from 2004–08.

“I’m not looking at it as more important than any other game,” Plough said. “Obviously, I want us to win every game. I don’t care if we’re playing Davis or Arizona, but it’s a special place to me. I love UC-Davis very much, so it will be tough in that regard.”

Since 2010, the Lumberjacks have gone 9–7 on the road, and 5–5 in non-conference games.

he Lumberjack had the opportunity to call up Nathan Willett, singer and guitarist of Cold War Kids, to ask some questions about his experience playing with the band. The Lumberjack (LJ): When did you, personally, start playing music and singing?

Nathan Willett (NW): I was taking guitar lessons when I was in seventh grade, and was always kind of just playing for myself. What was happening around where I grew up, more Orange County area . . . there were a lot of punk bands, a lot of hardcore bands, and a lot of that kind of thing. There wasn’t really anything that I was drawn to, so I wasn’t really playing in a band at all until this one.

LJ: If you had to categorize [Cold War Kids’] style of music, what would you describe it as?

NW: Soul-punk is something that we all try to do, which is like soulful and classic with a little more [expletive] angular kind of edge to it.

LJ: I’ve glanced over other interviews you’ve done, and from what I’ve dug up seen you’re a pretty well-read individual. I can imagine it’d be pretty easy to forsake literature on the road while touring. Do you push yourself to read and write as much as you do, or is it how you find fulfillment in all the pandemonium?

NW: Touring as long as we have can be just super monotonous. When you’re with the same group of people all the time, you have to find little ways to escape, which can come from other arts, from books and movies. We take in, as a band, a lot of stuff. Everybody is always into some new thing, because you need stay inspired and motivated I think just being on the road. So, yeah, we have a lot of different arts coming and going within the group, which I think is important for the life of the group.

LJ: Would you say you guys were a little crazier when you first started touring and were younger? On the road, did you go out more and take part in the pleasantries of mind-altering substances?

NW: I guess it’s somewhat the same way it is now when we started. Kind of enjoying the lifestyle, but you can’t get too swallowed up in it. You lose the edge of what you’re doing.

LJ: I was reading a VH1 interview and you mentioned

A Light That Never Goes Out was one of your favorite books.

Are The Smiths one of your favorite bands? Or who are some of your favorite bands and musicians, and why?

NW: Yeah, I like that book a lot—I like The Smiths a lot. So many bands . . . I’ve been listening to a Captain Beefheart record called Doc at the Radar Station. Umm, but let’s see . . . favorite bands being from Velvet Underground to U2 to Bob Dylan. Newer things; I love Frank Ocean, been listening to this King Krule record a lot; all over the place.

LJ: Are there any shows you’ve played with Cold War Kids that stand out in memory above the rest, and if so, why?

NW: I think we’ve always just had really fun shows in Paris. There’s always just a certain kind of magic we’ve had with the audience there, just always kind of a loose, fun show.

LJ: You’ve played in Flagstaff before at the Orpheum.

Do you have any vivid memory of the venue, or do they all just start to kind of blur after as many years of touring as you’ve spent?

NW: I remember it being a fun show. That was all I remember of it. We’ve played there a few times actually.

The first time, one of the first tours we ever did, was at the hotel there. I remember us having a super fun show where we were playing for no one . . . probably in 2005. I just remember it being a very special experience.

LJ: You’ve released four studio albums thus far. Do you have any more material you’d like to release, or are you focusing on touring with what you have released right now?

NW: We are gonna start recording for the next record real soon.

LJ: Was there ever a moment when the band was first starting out when you thought you’d make it as far and as long as you have?

NW: Definitely not. We definitely started out the band kind of for fun and had no idea what it would become, so we’ve been very fortunate.

LJ: Can you think of one of the largest crowds you’ve played for and where it was?

NW: I think it was at the Glastonbury festival in the UK . . . just a sea of people. I don’t even know how they get that many.

LJ: What did that feel like, looking out and seeing endless people?

NW: It’s something that you can’t really describe.

lagstaff ’s new dance club, Jax, opened its doors on Sept. 5. The 18 and over dance club is outfitted with multiple dance floors, bars, DJs and levels. Jax has moved into what used to be The Mad Italian (known locally as Mad I). Jax is a new take on the downtown scene, with new management and a fun atmosphere.

Owner Brandon Wendt, an NAU graduate, bought the entire building in mid-August. Wendt, a real estate agent and contractor, worked with his business partner in renovating the building in just three weeks. Wendt decided to return to Flagstaff for his newest endeavor because he enjoyed going to Mad I when he was a freshman and wanted to give the newest generation of underage students the chance to enjoy a night out. For the 21 and over crowd, Jax will have its own drink specials, but nothing is decided as of yet; in the meantime, Jax will have random drink specials — opening night had $3 you-call-its.

Wendt explained how the dance club will have specials similar to the well-established bars downtown.

However, Wendt said, “We want to become a part of downtown; we aren’t out there to dominate.”

The two bars are stacked with the usual array of liquor and beer; the bar in the main entrance area is small, although the other part of the building, currently closed due to construction, will open within the next few weeks, with a bar the length of half the building. Up the stairs is another bar, a little larger than the first and an entire outside patio dedicated to dancing. This bar has a separate DJ, playing his own music, a dance floor and scattered tables and chairs.

Samantha Durfee, a senior theater major, and a group of friends hung around the patio.

“It’s a cool concept. I like the outdoor thing, because it gets hot in the clubs,” Durfee said.

Although the patio and second level is off limits to the underage crowd, there is an entire room set up like a dance club, similar to something seen in Las Vegas. The large dancing area is equipped with strobe and colored lights, a fog machine and a chest-pounding sound system. Open to everyone in the club, there is a mix of underage and 21 and over dancers.

Drinks from the bar are not allowed into the dancing area, but there is a non-alcoholic bar inside offering energy drinks, soda and water. Black leather benches and booths line the walls for spectators to watch everyone on the large dance floor and the three mirrored-back raised stages.

Courtney Butkis, a senior speech pathology major, went with friends on opening night.

“I loved the atmosphere and the music was awesome. [I] would definitely go again,” Butkis said.

Jax is open Thursday through Saturday, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. It’s located at 101 S. San Francisco Street. Cover for 21 and over is free, 18 and over is $5 for females and $10 for males.

he second day of Kaleidoscope Kamp Out brought steady downpours.

As the rain fell, the trees and the grass were illuminated with life.

The smell of the pines permeated the air and the wet grass made a perfect, comforting dance floor, certainly better and more connected to the Earth than the sticky floors of Collin’s or Monsoon’s. It was no wonder the crowd embraced the showers and danced despite the rain.

Kaleidoscope Kamp Out is the second annual weekend-long arts and music festival held at Pepsi Amphitheater in Fort Tuthill — located outside of Flagstaff. The show featured local and national bands, artists and vendors.

Kaleidoscope is the perfect event for the energy of Flagstaff. With

nearby campgrounds, attendees can get the full experience of a music festival by staying overnight. With hula hoops, EDM and trippy light shows galore, Kaleidoscope attracts the large peace and nature loving crowd in Flagstaff.

The music kept on through the storm and bands such as Mansions on the Moon and OG Status rocked the crowd through the rain. The downpour seemed to magnify the spirit of the festival, bringing everyone together. The crowd kept dancing and no one cared that they were soaked.

It was apparent the vibe of this outdoor festival was being one with the earth and each other. Sidney Yount, a freshman anthropology major, picked up on this vibe.

“We’re trying to give ourselves to the Earth with our dance. It’s a humbling experience,” Yount said.

The Firefly Village inside the event was another testament to the tone of being one with the planet.

Through a white archway is a path with a fork. One way leads to a smaller, second stage with an earthen dance floor while the other leads to a garden of art and meditation.

Handmade flowers as tall as a person greet you as you stroll down the trail to lighted artwork and structures used for reflection and rest.

Crossing out of the Firefly Village, the edge of the amphitheater was lined with artists live-painting and selling their artwork.

Daniel Velasquez, a 3D artist with 8 Minutes to Burn, explained how he paints his eye-popping artwork.

“I only use my fingertips. I’ll put down a few colors at once, it’s

a combination of LED and black lights that make the picture pop,” Velazquez said. Velasquez’s art was a perfect addition to the festival.

With the twilight lingering and the pyrotechnics on the dance floor, the 3D art seemed to be in perfect place with the force of Kaleidoscope.

“I use love and energy in my painting,” Velasquez said.

When night fell, the lights came alive. Walking through the event, vendors could be found selling everything from hula hoops and hot chocolate to fire-throwing toys.

Paul Dunkirk-Greenbaum, a vendor from Phoenix and seasoned poi fire dancer showed off his skills.

“I’ve been fire dancing for 1214 years. It’s kind of like meditation, you lose yourself in it,” DunkirkGreenbaum said.

With all of the magic in the lights around, fire dancing fit in

perfectly.

With a lineup of 25 bands, overnight camping and a number of artists and vendors, Kaleidoscope Kamp Out really has something for everyone.

“It’s hard to say which band I liked best. I didn’t come for a certain band, I came to give myself to the whole experience,” Yount said.

The event brings together the community and inspires a feeling of oneness.

Even if the hippie vibe isn’t your scene, you will be accepted at Kaleidoscope like nowhere else.

When the rain soaks you to the bone, the energy of the people and music around will warm your weary soul.

That’s the spirit of Flagstaff and the spirit of the Kamp Out. Until next year, peace, love and dance.

Pickin’ in the Pines bluegrass festival comes to Flagstaff this weekend

Soundcheck: Trouble by Natalia Kills

here are big names lurking on the musical horizon, poised to take back the charts and radio waves with new albums brimming with enormous hooks and sing-along choruses. Amid the anticipation for the likes of the latest Lady Gaga or Katy Perry records, there always exists the underrated and lesser-known artist, slipping in to quietly release quality work that goes largely ignored by the larger population.

Natalia Kills is one of those artists, which is a shame because her latest is also her greatest and deserves recognition it’s not likely going to get.

Trouble stands as a study in how to do the all-important second album right.

A rising artist’s sophomore effort should show an expansion and evolution in sound, putting something new into their catalogue, while retaining and refining the original sound fans came to appreciate in the first place. Kills does this flawlessly, her trademark style of pop— filled with heavy synthesizers and grungy beats and lyrical content centered around violence and sexuality—still wholly intact, yet her ear for hooks and lyrics shows incredible improvement.

While her debut, Perfectionist, was at times tiresome with its simple, oneline choruses and heavy emphasis on repetition, Trouble demonstrates that Kills has a remarkable ability for lyrical power. More personal and biographical than its predecessor, most of the songs on the album paint a picture of the singer’s troubled childhood and adult life, exploring her family’s dysfunction (the mid-tempo anthem “Saturday Night”), her lost loves (the sparse but beautifully sincere “Marlboro Lights”), the chaos of her old neighborhood (the chaotic, yet vulnerable “Television”), and everything in between.

It’s dark and gritty stuff; yet, it is filled with plenty of catchy melodies that demand you sing along, or at the very least mouth the words. Gone is the tedious reiteration, replaced with a poetic voice that consistently strikes you as both clever and genuine.

Trouble also manages to strike a perfect balance between consistency

Top Tracks on Trouble: “Rabbit Hole” “Daddy’s Girl” and variety. The overall sound is always theatrical and moody, filled with howls, police sirens, and shouts, giving the record a feeling of cohesiveness and theme. At the same time, each track manages to stand out from the pack in one way or another, always lyrically impressive but sonically shifting between everything from loud, defiant head-bangers (the pounding and angry “Problem”) to laid-back ditties (the airy “Outta Time”). If nothing else, the diversity on display shows that Kills knows how to mix fun and pathos to delirious effect.

Even with its uniformly high quality, the unquestionable highlight on the disk is the tenth track “Rabbit Hole,” a tune so tumultuous and wicked it completely bypasses poor taste and loops right back around to brilliance. A rowdy ode to sex and rule-breaking, blaring with brass and chanting choruses, the song comes off as a demented version of Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl,” only twice as catchy. It’s so outrageous that the final three tracks on the album are nearly forgotten once they queue immediately afterwards, the ear wanting only to hear this one again.

While it may not quite reach the same giddy heights, “Daddy’s Girl” stands out as another clear winner, its retro feel, steady beat and sampling of Hall and Oates’ “Rich Girl,” creating a song that begs to be sung along with at high volumes.

Her lyrics suffer from only the occasional awkward hiccup in rhythm, and her relatively thin voice can sound almost whiny at times, yet these complaints are mere nitpicking of Kills’ clear talent. She sounds strong and passionate, intelligent and honest. After a solid yet uneven debut, she’s arrived with a beautifully crafted piece of work that is catchy yet complex, fun yet emotional, and an improvement on her past work in every way. She may not be dominating the charts at the moment, but Trouble doubtless shows that Natalia Kills should be.
