Suicide prevention week at NAU

AU is marking World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) with an even larger event, Suicide Prevention Week (SPW). Melissa Griffin, health promotions manager, said there were two main factors behind the push for SPW, the first being the main focus of Health Promotions: to promote student wellness and health. “The other thing is that we’ve had some increases over the past two years,” Griffin said. “We do a College Health Assessment Survey every two years; it’s through the American College Health Association and we did see a little bit of a bump in the number of students who reported actually attempting suicide over the past 12 months from two years ago to this year, when we did the survey again. So, we want to make sure this is a safe, caring community for everyone to be a part of.” Griffin also said in the survey there had been increases in percentages relating to both contemplating and attempting suicide. “When you ask, ‘Why are we doing this’, these are the kinds of things we consider,” Griffin said. “We call them a needs assessment, but when you see things like this we resee SPW page 4
