Jacks taste victory and defeat at buzzer

fter a buzzer-beater by senior guard Michael Dunn on Jan. 24 and the University of North Dakota hitting one of its own against NAU on Jan. 26, the Lumberjacks will hit the road for the next two games. First, a date against Southern Utah on Feb. 2 followed by a Feb. 4 game against Sacramento State. NAU came away from the homestand with a 1–1 record after a disappointing home defeat by North Dakota. The Lumberjacks were up 34–12 early in the first half, but had it dwindle to an 11-point halftime lead. After overcoming an 11-point second half deficit, the Lumberjacks eventually lost 81–79. Senior guard Gabe Rogers scored a career-high 35 points, the tenth highest output in school history. “Just got to forget about this one, and focus on the next one. Whether it’s a win or loss, your most important game is the next one. We can’t afford to go on a losing streak, starting the second round of conference,” said senior guard Michael Dunn. see BASKETBALL page 17

n a tragic incident reminiscent of the death of Jordan MurphyMahoney in September 2012, this past week an NAU student was struck by a black pickup truck while riding her bicycle and the driver fled the scene. This time, Alicia Hurley, a sophomore psychology student, survived with minor injuries. Hurley was out biking with her boyfriend and had pulled far ahead of him when the accident took place. She was crossing at the intersec-
tion of Lone Tree Road and Woodland Drive when the black truck turned without signaling. “I saw the car but they neglected to turn on their blinker and didn’t slow down and it was too late, I was already in the middle of the street,” Hurley said. “They were literally about to hit me kind of full on, on my left side, so I swerved my handlebars to the right and they ended up just nicking my back tire which caused me to then hit the curb and [I] ended up doing a little front flip over my bike.” Hurley said while the accident happened quickly, she was still very
