n NAU student was killed after being involved in a hit-and-run collision on Sept. 9. The victim, identified as Jordan MurphyMahoney, was a 21-year-old senior from San Jose, Calif. Tom Bauer, director of university public affairs, expressed his condolences for the family and friends of the victim. “When we lose part of our family, it’s a sad day and we’re thinking only of the family and friends [first],” Bauer said. “But as far as protocols, threefourths of what the university does when it loses one of its students is the certain steps it takes, [such as] contacting the family.” Murphy-Mahoney was riding her bicycle around 11 p.m. on Sunday in a neighborhood off Lake Mary Road, when she was struck by a vehicle, which proceeded to flee the scene. Paramedics and Flagstaff Police Department (FPD) were called to the intersection of South Walapai Drive and Mohawk Road, to assist the victim and investigate the suspected vehicle and driver. early four years after his most recent scored field goal in a game, junior Andy Wilder lined up with the chance to give the NAU Lumberjacks (1–1) their first win against a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school in 25 years. “I felt confident; I knew the guys were behind me,” Wilder said of the kick. “The team had made some great plays to get us down there. I knew it was my turn to step up and that’s what I did.” Wilder nailed the 33-yard field goal and gave the Lumberjacks a 17–14 lead with just 12 seconds left against the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) Rebels (0-2). After Wilder put the ensuing kickoff in the end zone for a touchback and following a pair of short completions by the Rebels, the Lumberjack sideline stormed the field in Las Vegas nine days after an embarrassing 57-point loss at ASU. “I always dreamed of being in that situation and I always go over it in my head: being in that situation, being clutch and making the kick,” Wilder said. “But I never thought it would be my first actual kick or first actual make.” see JACKPOT page 18
