AU hosted the George Kyte Cross Country Classic on a drizzly Saturday afternoon with the men’s squad proving to spectators and competitors alike their new team will continue the program’s legacy. After serving as a Duck while running at the University of Oregon, junior transfer Brian Shrader returned to Flagstaff as a Lumberjack and claimed victory in the men’s 8K race at Buffalo Park in 25:03.5 on a course all-too-familiar to him.

“It’s a nice homecoming where I’m out there running and in the middle of the race I say, ‘Hey there’s my first ever high school [coach] and there’s my second high school coach and there’s my track coach.’ It’s like all these coaches and my family obviously, some of my friends that I haven’t seen in a while and so much support. It was very uplifting,” Shrader said. “In the middle of the race, I found myself not even that tired because it was just such a great experience to be running in front of my hometown again.”

espite a fair amount of confidence entering their match up with the ASU Sun Devils (1–0), the NAU Lumberjacks (0–1) turned in a dreadful performance, falling 63–6.

While the loss was tough to stomach, it wound up even more costly as Walter Payton watch list member, junior running back Zach Bauman, left the game early in the second quarter after a devastating hit that left him stumbling as he returned to the sideline.

“Zach took a pretty good hit. He seemed fine later, but it’s not my job to assess that. We have a medical team that does that,” said head coach Jerome Souers. see FOOTBALL page 21

Officers were dispatched. Dorm staff decided to handle the situation and deferred all subjects for minor consumption.

At 1:37 p.m., a patron at the Health and Learning Center called to report a possible transient in the fourth floor lounge area.

An officer was dispatched. The subject was not in the fourth floor lounge area. The building was checked without locating the subject.

At 9:45 p.m., staff from Mountain View Hall called to report the odor of marijuana.

Officers were dispatched. One subject was cited and released for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Sept. 1 At 12:15 a.m., NAU Police Department (NAUPD) received a report of a male subject following a female subject south on the bus spine from building 96B. An officer was dispatched. The female subject entered Sechrist Hall and the male subject could not be located. No further action was taken.

At 12:49 a.m., an officer reported six individuals were intoxicated at Reilly Hall.

At 11:40 a.m., a resident of Hilltop Townhomes called to report an intoxicated subject had mistakenly entered the reporting party’s suite and had showered and changed clothes, leaving behind her own clothes and exiting the apartment wearing the roommates’ clothes.

This occurred on Aug. 31 at 10:30 p.m. An officer was dispatched and the subject declined to file a report at this time.

Aug. 31 At 12:43 a.m., an officer reported a subject was sleeping in the wooded area north of Pine Knoll Drive and McConnell Drive.

The subject was advised of trespassing campus-wide and left the area.

At 4:19 p.m., an anonymous subject called to report a resident of Allen Hall possibly smoking methamphetamine in his room.

Officers were dispatched. The subject was arrested and booked into the CCSO for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Aug. 29 At 3:42 p.m., a passerby called to report

subjects were driving around 15 minutes prior in a pick-up truck and shooting people with an air soft gun.

An officer was dispatched and FPD was notified to attempt to locate the vehicle. The subjects could not be located in the area.

At 4:38 p.m., a subject called reporting the subjects from the previous entry were driving past the Adel Math building and shot him with an air soft gun.

Officers were dispatched. One subject was arrested and booked into Juvenile Detention for assault.

Aug. 28 At 12:37 p.m., staff at Campus Heights called to report a resident was possibly smoking marijuana in his apartment.

An officer was dispatched. Hall staff was advised by the resident’s roommate that the subject was smoking; however the resident was not smoking marijuana.

Dorm staff was provided with information as to how to handle future complaints.

Aug. 27 At 10:05 a.m., a subject called to report the tailgate had been stolen from his vehicle while it was parked in Lot 62.

The theft occurred between 7:45 a.m. and 10:05 a.m.

An officer was dispatched. The case is closed with all leads exhausted.

n light of the recent plagiarism scandal at ASU’s student newspaper The State Press, we would like to take this time to sincerely thank our staff for upholding the highest quality of journalistic integrity to our knowledge. The problems at The State Press have made us all the more appreciative for the amazing group of students and faculty we have producing The Lumberjack every week. Journalism in this day and age is scrutinized for its bias and overly ambiguous stories; however, here at The Lumberjack we take pride in finding and reporting the fairest news and the most well-rounded stories possible.

While we are students first and reporters second and it is hard for our staff to produce high quality original work and maintain a full schedule, we expect the best from our staff and will accept nothing less.

Although we have our issues here and there, we are proud to admit our staff is not guilty of plagiarism. We send our sincerest condolences to the staff at The State Press and hope their image of high journalistic morality will remain as untainted as possible.

Lowell, Discovery Channel Telescope featured in documentary

owell Observatory and the Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT) will be featured on the Discovery Channel Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.

EST and PST. “Scanning the Skies: The Discovery Channel Telescope” will focus on the planning and construction of this state-of-the-art telescope.

According to a Discovery press release, the documentary will feature interviews with Jeff Hall, Director of Lowell Observatory and other Lowell astronomers about their mission to “bring the latest discoveries from our solar system into every living room, classroom and social networking site.”

The partnership between Lowell Observatory and the Discovery Channel began around a decade ago. Hall has gone on the record to say they have wanted to build a telescope of this caliber for around 20 years, and the partnership with Discovery has finally made it possible.

“We’ve been talking about building a large telescope here at Lowell for about as long as I’ve been here, which is 20 years, and we originally called it the Next Generation Lowell Telescope, the working name for the project,” Hall said.

“Raising the funds was kind of the stumbling block. It was about 10 years ago that John Hendricks — who is the founder and former CEO of Discovery who has long been a member of our trustees advisory board – proposed the partnership where Discovery would kick in 10 million and, Mr. Hendricks, another million from his family’s foundation, in return for naming rights to the telescope and first rights to use the data that we collect with the telescope for their educational purposes. So, that got the ball rolling and started this partnership that has now come to fruition.”

The telescope is intended to feed videos, pictures and research to schools around the world.

It would also give astronomers a platform they can use to show the world what they are doing in terms of research.

“Through its partnerships with school districts worldwide, Discovery Education will provide teachers with lesson plans and resources to ignite students’ curiosity and help them learn about astronomy and science,” Discovery said in a press release.

Hall noted the telescope will help with Lowell’s primary mission — research — and with gaining outreach.

“It’s an opportunity for our astronomers to

talk about not only what we do, but how we do science [and] how the scientific method works,” Hall said. “[Sending those] to the Discovery Education Networks, I should say, that reaches a huge number of schools. That gives [us] a tremendous chance for Lowell’s mission of doing research, which is the centerpiece of our mission [and] outreach.”

According to Lisa Prato, Lowell astronomer, the educational opportunities the DCT will provide are not limited to the raw data and video from the telescope.

“This is a terrific opportunity to introduce science, via the excitement of astronomy, into the classroom,” Prato said. “It will show kids what real science is like, and who is doing it. There is still a knee-jerk reaction in our society for children, when asked to describe a scientist, paint a picture of an elderly Caucasian male in a white lab coat, in spite of all the progress and the surging numbers of women and minorities in many fields.

Seeing real scientists doing real science should be a revelation to kids all over the country. If it doesn’t inspire them to be more open to and curious about science, it should at least leave them far more savvy about what science is and how it’s done.”

The DCT will be utilized in multiple disciplines of astronomy, having been built to be used in varying projects.

“Our former director, Bob Millis, called it the ‘Swiss Army Knife of telescopes,’” Hall said.

“It’s not designed to do one thing perfectly, but it is designed to a wide range of projects very well and that makes it able to accommodate a diverse array of research projects — from solar system and planetary astronomy to stellar and extragalactic [astronomy]. It certainly fits our science staff well because we have 20 astronomers who do all kinds of research, spanning all of astrophysics.”

According to Prato, much of the research at Lowell fits under the larger category of various celestial body formation.

“Although originally, over a decade ago, there was some emphasis on solar system astronomy planned for the DCT, that has been replaced by the more general theme of Origins – how do planets form, particularly ones like our own?

How do stars form? How do galaxies form? Most astronomers at Lowell work on problems related to Origins,” Prato said.

Hall contributed optimistically, saying, “There is big, exciting stuff coming out of [the DCT] after the show airs.”

Flagstaff named one of 9 Fittest Towns in the West City known for Olympic training, Cardinals summer training camp, winter sports

Famous for housing international athletes in all seasons, Flagstaff even sent a few residents to the 2012 Summer Olympics.

The city also hosts the summer training camp for the Arizona Cardinals each year.

The home of the NAU Lumberjacks lays claim to a city filled with multiple opportunities for locals to stay fit, regardless of exercise preferences.

One of many popular sports in Flagstaff is swimming. In the most recent summer Olympics, there were 17 competing countries, including Tunisia and Norway, who had

athletes train for swimming and paraswimming in Flagstaff.

Marisa Gulliford, a swim instructor at the Wall Aquatic Center, acknowledges the advantages coinciding with training in high altitudes, as well as the obstacles.

“There is so much to do outside here,” Gulliford said. “But be prepared to be more out of breath than from wherever you’re from.”

Flagstaff also hosts Arizona Snowbowl, which offers Phoenix residents a chance to head up north to escape the heat Kory Wiley, a senior geology major, agreed NAU and the city of Flagstaff offer exercise opportunities for many different interests.

“There is a really nice rec center here [NAU] just spent a lot of money on,” Wiley said. “Plus, they have all the urban trails, and there’s skiing and hiking.”

Sunset Magazine referred to Flagstaff as “a magnet not just for Phoenix residents escaping summer heat, but also for elite swimmers and runners intent on altitude training.”

The magazine included how “lush pineforested trails add to the appeal.”

TJ Fisher, a senior secondary earth and science education major, agreed.

“The city is built around outdoor activities,” Fisher said. “There’s biking and so many other activities, like on Mt. Humphreys and Mt. Elden. People come here to get a good workout.”

Gulliford also acknowledged the freedom Flagstaff extends to its physically active residents.

“I like going to Zumba classes here on campus, and I like to hike Snowbowl as well,” Gulliford said.

It should be noted, however, the high altitude of Flagstaff can result in quicker loss of breath and dehydration. Students are advised to drink lots of water and continue exercising so their bodies may acclimate to the unusual atmosphere and unfamiliar altitude.

“It’ll be tough, but you’ll get used to it,” Gulliford said. “Being fit up here gives you more of an advantage and works your body more; that’s why so many Olympic swimmers come up to Wall Aquatic Center to train, it works them more. The disadvantage is the difficulty to breathe and train yourself.”

“The elevation really makes the workouts strenuous,” Fisher said.

If on-campus workouts or group exercise classes seem boring or demanding enough, one can explore Flagstaff and find other creative outlets, like hiking the underground Lava Tube Caves or biking through Schultz Pass Trail.

Euphoria subsides, indifferent electorate risk for campaigns

T

he presidential election of 2008 brought forth an onslaught of enthusiastic young voters whose political spirit was ignited by none other than today’s president, Barack Obama. Voters came in droves to voting booths to perform their civic duties.

While most of the younger generation felt they had gone above and beyond the call of Uncle Sam, many volunteers at poll sites around the nation would argue these first-time voters were more of a nuisance than a productive age group.

It has been four lackluster years since President Obama’s call to arms, and political enthusiasm among the 18-to-29-year-old voting group has fizzled out like a sparkler on the Fourth of July. Many argue Obama’s “change” died when he failed to achieve his campaign promises and these student voters will easily sway toward the Republican party come this next presidential election.

However, it was Obama’s slogan along with several other factors that led to this one-time inflation of young voters.

Honestly speaking, the largest argument is Obama’s “Vote for Change” translated into “vote for me.” This presented the illusion to naïve voters that political change is as simple as changing clothes. So when “change” did eventually come around, many first-time voters were extremely downtrodden and unimpressed by the rather slow and uneventful process of our nation’s government. Luckily for Obama, MTV encouraged their own “unbiased” campaign called “Vote or Die,” endorsed by countless celebrities. This encouraged a mindless following by the MTV audience straight to their nearest polling sites, where they immediately consult the poll volunteers with questions like,

“What box do I check for Obama?”

On top of the underlying claims by both “Change” and “Vote or Die,” the Internet put forth its first steps toward clickactivism, where a Facebook status would be added toward the vote count at the end of the election.

Both of these slogans, while effective, were only a short-term solution to inspiring new voters to a very shallow concept of how politics actually work.

In addition to these campaigns illustrating a false image of political change, they implied the idea that voting could completely eliminate 200 years of offensive history that we like to call “racism.” For many young’uns,

viral new trend through 2008 that was made tangible through clothing styles, images and ideals to illustrate the seemingly cultured perspectives of acne-faced teens during their early 20s.

To expose how faulty the young voter foundation was in 2008, the entire voting process was quickly spun into a consumerist perspective that allowed underage “political activists” to embrace a stance through bracelets, T-shirts, posters and bumper stickers, which suddenly became synonymous with a ballot. Companies quickly advocated the consumerist idealism by providing free product offers with proof the customer had voted. Akin’s remarks on harassment embarrasing

T

odd Akin (R-MO) enlightened the nation during an interview on Aug. 19 with information that had apparently, somehow, slipped between the cracks in the field of biology. According to Akin, women should not be allowed to seek an abortion, even in instances of rape, because being impregnated as a result of rape is “. . . really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” After a well-provoked uproar AMANDA from Democrats, women, HORNER women’s rights activists and even his own party, he has apologized for his comments, claiming he “misspoke” as a result of his self-prescribed “foot in mouth" disease. To have “misspoken” such an offensive, repulsive comment is an understatement. Akin even claimed this information is based on “what he’s heard from doctors.”

How Akin is trying to use doctors as a source of this misinformation is very strange. The female body can become impregnated when a sperm cell travels into the uterus and fertilizes an egg, if one is there.

Plus or minus a few details, it really is that easy to understand. Unfortunately, the female body does not have some kind of in-

nate rape deflector. For Akin to attempt to distinguish “rape” from “legitimate rape” is repugnant. Every year, 32,000 women become pregnant after being victims of rape and sexual assault. It is a traumatizing experience, and to try to justify rape-related pregnancies in such a way as Akin did is deeply troubling.

It is not out of the ordinary for government officials to insist on determining the affairs of a woman’s reproductive system, but these remarks far exceeded the typical misogynistic, insulting ideology Republicans tend to hold to. Even worse, host of talk radio show “Focal Point” and member of the American Family Association, Bryan Fisher, defended Akin’s comments. Fisher stated, “There's a very delicate and complex mix of hormones that take place — that are released — in a woman's body, and if that gets interfered with, it may make it impossible for her or difficult in that particular circumstance to conceive a child.” Akin’s and Fisher’s delusions about the mechanics of the female reproductive system are infuriating. To speak out against women’s reproductive rights and demonstrate no knowledge of the most fundamental aspects is an insult to women and victims of rape and sexual assault.

The Republican Party has started in on Democrats for holding Akin’s remarks over

the head of the party as a whole. Granted, many Republicans have denounced support for Akin, apologized on his behalf and even called for him to drop out of the election: a minor step in the right direction. Perhaps, however, they are presuming these types of comments about such sensitive topics are somehow an isolated incident in their party. Let us not forget the Republicans of the House, and their “poorly worded” bill that distinguished “rape” from “forcible rape.”

Let us not forget Sharron Angle, who ran for senate in Nevada, and declared rape victims should not have access to abortion because they should “make a lemon situation into lemonade.” Comparing rape to a fruit and an unplanned pregnancy to a sweet summertime drink is more than horrifying.

If the Republican Party and its members insist on valuing the life of an undeveloped embryo above a woman who wants to make the decisions that impact the rest of her life, that’s their prerogative. However, in the future, keeping the aggressive and inaccurate commentary on basic anatomy to a minimum is probably a strategic campaign move. With any luck, members of Congress will be given the opportunity to take a refresher course of ninth grade sex education — but hopefully not the “abstinence only” version, which will only lead right back to square one.

here have been rising problems due to medical over-treatment. Over-treatment is not only an issue for people’s health, but also in regards to rising health care bills.

Examples of over-treatment include unnecessary X-rays, abundant CT scans, proNATASHA longed hosREEVES pit a lizat ion and futile surgeries. Prescribing too many antibiotics is another type of overtreatment. Each year, the health care system wastes a large amount of resources on “care” that does nothing to improve people’s health and quality of life.

According to a poll conducted by The New York Times blog“The Agenda,” more than a thousand participants responded with an affirmative to the question, “Have you received too much medicine?”

Over-treatment is one of the leading factors increasing health care costs and is a concern worthy of serious consideration, particularly with the Affordable Health Care Act becoming the law of the land. There is an attitude in the nation that “more is better,” so it seems logical that more medicine and treatment would be a good thing; however, there are a lot of patients who get stuck in an endless cycle of tests and appointments with specialists who never really cure their illness — usually because there is no illness to cure.

Resolving this issue is

a matter of knowing when to stop. The medical system will always have certain policies and procedures doctors and hospitals need to follow, but these policies and procedures demand medical practitioners treat patients only to the extent that is necessary and beneficial, no more.

Some doctors are more inclined to over-treat than others. This is perfectly illustrated by a story in The New York Times about Diane Power of Breckenridge, Colo. who had Wegener’s disease. Her original doctor insisted on office visits every three weeks, even when she was feeling well.

Power went through multiple blood tests and Xrays, even after receiving perfectly healthy results on past tests. She had been hospitalized for a minor cold and in one six-month period, had accumulated 25 doctor visits. Power was spending about $30,000 a year out-of-pocket for the health care. Several years later, she finally looked for another specialist. With the new specialist, the regular testing stopped and Power only had to see her new doctor four times per year.

During all the years she was with the prior specialist, she went through unnecessary physical suffering and was nearly ruined financially due to the medical cost.

Hopefully, this increase in over-treatment will enable doctors and policymakers to start treating patients as individuals and learn when to go forward with treatment and when to stop.

he cold, industrious Republican machine has begun to creak and groan as the incessantly grinding gears thirst for the oil upon which they depend. The insatiable desire — that will inevitably result in the contamination of the water and air upon which we rely — will be indulged by the business tycoon Mitt Romney. No longer will groveling and pleading at the feet of the oil industry secure the monetary donaCOLTON tions that perpetuate DARGER his anti-environmental campaign; Romney must now prove to the global elite that he is willing to take action. The announcement of Romney’s guised “drill, baby, drill” policy has satisfied the puppeteers, who have rewarded the governor by contributing millions of dollars to ensure a presidential victory.

If Romney is elected as President of the United States, the future of alternative and renewable energies will become a bleak one as big oil gains massive swathes of land for their disposal.

With the announcement of his new energy plan, Romney has made it evident to voters how environmentalism is the least of his concerns. Overall, the entire plan centers on tearing down the flood gates and inundating the U.S. with unprecedented quantities of fossil fuels. The

key elements that will make the oil torrent a reality includes the rapid approval of the hazardous route of the Keystone XL pipeline, expanding the drilling operation in an already porous and tattered Gulf, and the ubiquitous dismantlement of federal regulations that preserve the American landscape. The Republican Party has unanimously praised Romney for his plan, despite overwhelming evidence of the devastating consequences that could result from his policies.

In order to better comprehend how much more Romney is concerned with his oil money than the safety of the American population, consider how he would speed up the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. While Romney argues the pipeline is necessary because it will contribute millions of dollars to the American economy and create jobs, he seems to show no consideration for the dangers that are associated with its construction. The path of the pipeline the governor so eagerly endorses is one that crosses an enormous extent of the Midwest, and would come extraordinarily close to the Ogallala Aquifer. According to the United States Geological Survey, this particular aquifer supplies approximately 30 percent of the groundwater used for irrigation in the U.S., and provides drinking water for millions of Americans. This means that in the event of an oil spill, one of the world’s most

critical aquifers would be contaminated, and would result in an international catastrophe.

Although the presumptive environmental degradation and disaster resulting from the approval of the Keystone pipeline would likely deter a moderately rational person from supporting such a hazardous project, Romney still yearns for a society even more conducive to the absolute destruction of the environment as we know it. Romney’s solution to the “issue” of too little drilling in America, is to give states the authority to decide if oil companies can drill on federal land.

This deregulation of federal lands that are protected in an effort to preserve the natural environment will ensure that greed and corruption at the state level surmount the influence of even the most predominant environmental protection groups.

While some are quick to contend that the Obama administration has shown a lackluster performance in the conservation of the environment, no one could logically argue a Romney administration would be more environmentally conscientious. I suggest the conservatives who propagate the destruction of the natural world in return for “job creation” consider the consequences of their actions, and whether or not economic stimulus is a worthy exchange for the water we drink and the air we breathe.

At the Republican National Convention, Mitt Romney pledged “to restore the promise of America” upon accepting the Republican presidential nomination. In addition, the Republican nominee accused President Barack Obama of failing to deliver on his promises. Quid pro quo, Mr. Romney. You try dealing with the pressures of the Oval Office, a split-powered Congress and an incessantly whiny and needy country. Then, and only then, may you call Obama out for what would surely come to be a hypocritical statement.

Romney vowed to create 12 million American jobs over the next four years and turn around an economy saddled with an 8.3 percent unemployment rate. It’s hard not to admire his fervent luster for restoring America to the vision he and the rest of the nation generally dream upon. Yet, quite admirably, patriotic hoopleheads have imagined bright futures for America since the Declaration of Independence, the failures of which have made a bloated government strangle the country under its inconspicuous anti-democratic weight.

Obama has been handing out food stamps, health care and welfare like balloon animals at an

aristocratic five-year-old’s birthday party, and though he claims it will balance itself out within years, America doesn’t have years to wait. Obama promised change four years ago; so far, a majority of those benefits have only positively affected the lower class, at the expense of the middle class and corporations. Obama has good intentions with his Robin Hood-like tactics which fool the poor and anger the “rich.” Unfortunately, the “rich” also includes the middle class in Obama’s eyes — the working class. When taxes are increased for productive households and flipped into handouts for those largely and stereotypically unproductive, the economy will end up in a worsened state than when those policies began. As sneaky as Obama is, his whole “change” campaign of 2008 could’ve just as easily meant “change” in the sense of currency, as American’s have found their pockets jingling more than before Mr. President won the election that gloomy day four years ago.

Considered an extremist in her time and ours, Ayn Rand once said, “If any civilization is to survive, it is the morality of altruism that men have to reject.” Socialistic ideals didn’t work in Greece or Portugal. so how is it fathomable they’d work in America?

America doesn’t need Obama as president. Individuals have become too dependent on government handouts and intervention in their lives; and the fed is breeding a generation of obese cartoons who are beginning to feel more and more entitled as Mommy and Daddy get letter after letter of handouts. Romney is by no means perfect either, but America needs to be taken more in the direction he — and his political entourage — is proposing.

Obama’s vision for America goes completely against the dream the country was founded on, a dream that must be upheld to bring about lasting prosperity.

The residents of both The Suites and the Hilltop Townhomes had minimal complaints about their new homes. Harris only mentions that the walk to the bus stop from the Hilltop Townhomes is farther than he thought and Levy says the closest parking spaces he wanted were often taken. As for The Suites, Felix could not list any negatives about them and all Malkou says is that she still has to adjust.

“I just noticed that it’s really quiet on south campus,” Malkou says. “I’m just not used to that yet.”

Freshmen reveal embarassing moments

ince turning in their applications this past fall, the time that many anxious freshmen have been waiting for has finally arrived. This past week, they stepped onto NAU campus, took a deep breath and started a new journey: their first year of college.

Many students had different reasons for choosing NAU. Rachel Meyer, a freshman biomedical science major, says she knew she would love being over 7,000 feet above sea level, because it allows people to “see the stars.”

“NAU is close enough to home but also far enough away,” says Amber George, a freshman journalism major from Tucson, As the freshmen adjust to college life, they also have the opportunity to explore the new environment around them. Flagstaff and its surrounding area have multiple attractions for NAU students to explore, such as discovering downtown Flagstaff, attending events like First Friday Art Walks, mapping out the best places to eat and becoming immersed in the culture many of the older students at NAU have fallen in love with. For the more adventurous students, there are multiple attractions outside of Flagstaff, such as hiking the many trails and skiing or snowboarding at Snowbowl.

However, freshmen may have to find their way around campus first before they can explore the city. Losing their sense of direction is just one of the many awkward moments freshmen might endure during the first few weeks of school. For Meyer, the awkwardness started during move-in weekend when she met her roommate by “walking in on her saying goodbye to her family and everyone was crying,” while she proceeded to just stand there. However, she and her roommate later became friends and continued to bond through the process of breaking their microwave.

For Kaleigh Hall, a freshman business management major, her embarrassing moment took place on the bus. Hall had the pleasure of making a new friend

when a guy sat on her in the crowded bus to south campus.

“It was really crowded and he fell on top of me,” Hall says. “The empty space he was standing in filled up so he couldn’t get up for a while. It was awesome and I made a new friend.”

Freshmen have also been experiencing memorable moments in their classes. According to Lindsey Shields, a freshman English secondary education major, her professor, James Manley, caused a stir in her class.

“He started class by encouraging students to interact with each other by getting up and doing the Cha Cha slide,” Shields says. “The energy released the tension of being in a new environment.

Seeing people participate helped [me] feel more at ease.”

Samantha Berlin, a freshman psychology major, has been enjoying her women’s gender studies class taught by Jennifer Musial.

“We watched the documentary ‘The Great Sperm Race,’” Berlin says, “and we read and discussed such interesting things.”

Jared Kral, a freshman English major, described his favorite moment so far as “discovering the indescribably fetching flavor of the Cocoa Puff marshmallow treat in the Hot Spot.” Kral is very happy with his decision in choosing to come to NAU. Meyer determined her favorite moment was when she was with friends in an elevator.

“A guy walked in with his amazingly bushy beard,” Meyer says. “I asked him to pet it and he let me.” She says that moment showed her NAU is a place where people can accept her weirdness.

Cocoa Puff marshmallow treats and bushy beards are memorable, but making friends seem to be the overall accomplishment that freshmen are cherishing. Berlin said her favorite moment at NAU was the moment she realized she had made friends who she can see herself hanging out with for a while. Berlin described them as “friends who will last.”

“F

lagstaff is 100 percent a cycling town,” says Ellson Miles, the owner of Bici-Mundo in southern Flagstaff. Looking at the statistics, it is easy to see where Miles is coming from. According to the Census Bureau, many Flagstaff residents cite a bicycle as their main mode of transportation, and the reasons for this thriving cycling culture are endless.

Due to Flagstaff ’s progressive measures towards cycling infrastructure, the city has earned a silver status as a Bicycle Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists. Being a relatively small town, the longest of commuter rides usually takes no more than 20 minutes. The close proximity to the mountains also encourages “alternative lifestyles,” similar to places like Boulder, Colo. and Portland, Ore. Having a university in town also helps to promote cycling transportation because NAU offers several bicycle clubs and activities.

Cycling culture is a catalyst for living a sustainable life. A Massachusetts Institute of Technology study conducted

by Shreya Dave found the carbon footprint of an ordinary sedan is more than 10 times greater than a conventional bicycle on a mile-for-mile basis.

“The bike can change people’s minds and get them thinking about environmental issues,” says CJ Constantopoulos, part-owner of Flagstaff Bike Revolution.

Many people in the cycling community believe the bicycle can be the mascot for a change toward green living.

“By shifting the paradigm from cars and fossil fuels toward bikes, we can solve just about every problem facing our nation,” says NAU alumnus and bicycle enthusiast Taylor Mahoney.

Some of the problems that bicycle riding can combat include pollution, noise, obesity, depression, fossil fuel dependence, conflicts over resources and

the lack of a community.

Not only are the environment and economy benefiting from bicycle transportation, many cyclists believe biking can create a friendlier community by strengthening local businesses and relationships.

“Bikes are the social machine,” says Josh Lipton, president of Bike Shop Hub, one of the many bike shops that contribute to the cycling culture in Flagstaff.

Taylor Thomas, an employee of Absolute Bikes, agrees with Lipton.

“Biking creates happiness,” Thomas says. “It causes you to just take it easy.”

In addition to helping create a happier community, cycling can also get more people interested in town establishments. Riding a bike helps people explore the town and can take away the stress of finding a parking spot.

“Cycling brings local business and Flagstaff love,” says Moran Henn, program director at Friends of Flagstaff ’s Future. “By not being constrained to a car, you can see what Flagstaff truly has to offer.”

If you are a new student interested in bicycling around Flagstaff, there are plenty of members in the cycling community who are here to help.

“Learn the Flagstaff Urban Trail System trails and go on social rides,” Miles says. He also emphasized the importance of learning the traffic laws.

Anthony Quintle from Absolute Bikes explained how not taking cycling seriously can result in injury.

“Those of us involved in bicycle advocacy here wind up needing to spend extra time attending special public meetings and writing letters to the newspaper, ” Quintle says.

Cycling is a great way to learn about the community, be fit, live a sustainable life and be a happier person all-around.

Science-fiction author H.G. Wells once said, “Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I have hope for the human race.” ­

lthough both tournaments have been on the road, the NAU women’s volleyball team has started off in similar fashion to the 2011 season, where the team jumped out to a 12–0 start.

The Jacks improved their 2012 season record to 6–0 after clinching the Omni Hotels Colorado Volleyball Classic tournament in Boulder, Colo.

“It was fun,” head coach Craig Choate said. “It was interesting. It was tougher competition than the first weekend.

Fresno State was really, really good. That was one hard match for us to win. It was actually tougher than the Colorado match, which surprised me.”

After their play this past weekend against California State University-Fresno, host University of Colorado-Boulder and Cornell University, the team has continued to prove its strength in its pre-conference matchups.

With contributions all around, a strong defensive weekend for the Lumberjacks allowed their offensive attackers to continue to dominate. Much like the weekend before, the squad executed impressive performances by senior outside hitter Kelli Dallmann, who earned her second consecutive MVP award, sophomore middle blocker Sydney Kemper and freshman outside hitter Janae Vander Ploeg.

Overcoming dropping their first set in their first two matches against Fresno State (19­–25, 25­–21, 25–21, 25­–21) and Colorado (24–26, 25–21, 25–22, 25–19), the squad would claim the consecutive three sets to take the match and close out the weekend with a sweep of Cornell in just three sets (25–16, 25–20, 25–17).

“At practice we’re just working hard,” Dallmann said. “It’s volleyball. We’re all just playing and doing our thing.”

Senior libero Anna Gott controlled the back row with 55 digs overall on the weekend, earning All–Tournament team honors, easing the job of sophomore setter Kalee Kirby who set up her hitters, tallying 129 assists in the tournament.

Kemper helped out defensively and offensively, totaling 13 blocks and 25 kills overall. Dallmann converted 41 kills on 111 attempts improving her overall hitting percentage to .275.

“It was a really good tournament for us,” Dallmann said.

“We had a lot of fun out there, playing a PAC-12 team. It was so much fun. Everyone did their job and when that happens, good things happen.”

Vander Ploeg returned to her home state with a bang, in only her second appearance as a Lumberjack received her second consecutive All–Tournament honors, recording 42 kills on 120 attempts, 4 blocks and 27 digs for the weekend.

“Just going for everything and not letting anything hit the floor,” Vander Ploeg said about her strong defensive play.

“It helps me a lot because Anna [Gott] is such a good leader for defense and just telling me where to be and what to do, so it helps a ton.”

NAU will be back on the road for its third consecutive away tournament this Friday, Sept. 7 in the Molten Classic Presented by Hilton Garden Inn in Berkeley, Calif., at 5 p.m. to face University of California-Riverside and then continue its play on Saturday against University of Pennsylvania and host No. 25 University of California-Berkeley. “[Berkeley is] going to be extremely tough. They’re going to be, probably, a lot bigger and faster than us. But that doesn’t mean that they are better than us,” Choate said. “Because the girls always, always, play up. So it’s a nice measuring stick... can we compete with the big teams.”

fter the Lumberjacks opened their home schedule against in-state foes ASU and UA, head coach Andre Luciano questioned his team’s mettle and their lack of passion and fire on the field.

This past weekend, at the UNLV Rebel Classic, the fire rose out of the Lumberjacks in their bouts with Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and the University of Oklahoma.

Against the Owls of FAU, the Jacks kept their feet on the pedal. NAU tailed its first win of the season, 2–0.

While posting their first double-digit shot total of the season and winning the second half of the game for the first time all season, the Lumberjacks ended up right where they wanted to be, in the win column.

With the first half ending in a scoreless stalemate, a pair of freshmen, forward Haley Wingender and midfielder Cierra Gamble, both scored their first career goals as members of the NAU women’s soccer program.

Wingender, a Las Vegas-area native, had the special opportunity of scoring her first collegiate goal in front of her family and friends in her hometown.

Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Gilbertson, also a Las Vegas-area native, recorded her first victory as a goalkeeper in the win over FAU on Aug. 31.

“It shows that we’re growing . . . from the freshmen up to the seniors,” Wingender said. “We’re growing as a team. It’s more promising, I’m confident in the team and how we can play.”

Wingender scored in the 62nd minute from 12 yards and Gamble added to the lead in the 88th minute off of a single touch. The Lumberjacks were outshot 14–10, but showed that their offensive wings were beginning to spread on the field.

“I think the most important thing is that our team is maturing with every game,” Luciano said. “On Friday, we came out lethargic, but we pressed Florida Atlantic and got our two goals.”

AU opened its 2012 campaign against ASU with a lessthan-impressive showing. The Jacks were forked by the Sun Devils, 63–6, in Tempe, with two of their starters going down in the second quarter. Despite junior running back Zach Bauman and senior quarterback Cary Grossart leaving the game early, the offense did have a few high points with the debuts of senior running back Covaughn Deboskie-Johnson and sophomore quarterback Chase Cartwright.

Bauman caught a pass at the line of scrimmage from backup quarterback sophomore Chase Cartwright before taking the hit that left him motionless on the ground for a few seconds.

“We will not mess around with any kind of a potential head injury,” Souers said. “Kid made a great play on a screen pass and it was a major-league collision.”

Bauman’s injury would be the second of the day for the Lumberjacks’ starting backfield. First string quarterback senior Cary Grossart left the game with a knee injury after throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown by the Sun Devils’ Brandon Magee on the Lumberjacks’ first possession of the second quarter.

Grossart, whose knee was wrapped as he walked to the locker room postgame, could be seen having his leg worked on at the trainer’s table prior to being ruled out for the game.

“We don’t believe Cary to be seriously injured. It’s something he’ll be able to rehab his way out of,” Souers said.

The injuries added to an already shorthanded Lumberjack offense, as the team’s leading returner at wide receiver also missed the game. Junior Ify Umodu was suspended

for violating team rules, but is expected to be back for next week at UNLV. Missing weapons on offense would not be NAU’s undoing, as the defense struggled to slow down ASU. After deferring to the second half at the opening coin toss, NAU saw ASU’s no-huddle offense cruise to 73yard opening touchdown drive in only 3:38 minutes.

The Sun Devils repeated the process another five times before the Lumberjacks could get on the board.

Finally, it was a pair of PAC-12 departees, University California-Berkeley transfer Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson and University of Oregon transplant Nick Cole, who helped get the Lumberjacks on the board.

DeBoskie-Johnson, filling in for an injured Bauman, broke off a 34-yard run and Cartwright hit Cole for a 20-yard touchdown reception on the ensuing play. Nothing, however could come easy on the night for NAU as the PAT was blocked by ASU. “I felt like after we settled down with a couple of the backups coming in, we really started to get some momentum going,” Cartwright said. “Coach called a great play and we made it work for a touchdown.”

In his first game for NAU, DeboskieJohnson finished with 82 yards rushing on 15 carries and one catch for eight yards, but

chose to label the end result a bit differently.

“I didn’t even know I had success. Success is winning, so I was just playing as hard as I can to try and get back up to that score and help us win,” Deboskie-Johnson said.

However, the loss did not take away DeBoskie-Johnson’s enthusiasm for his new program.

“You know, I was excited. This is a big opportunity for me,” the senior running back said. “It’s my last year for me to be with my brothers. I consider this team my brothers, just like my brother [Ca’leve DeBoskie] on this team.”

Despite what was the worst loss to the Sun Devils since a 1950 63–0 defeat, the Lumberjacks could redeem themselves next Saturday in Las Vegas with another chance to shock an FBS program.

“We’re Lumberjacks. We put on our steel-toed boots and our hard hat every day.

Tomorrow, that’s what we’re going to do,” DeBoskie-Johnson said. “We’re going to look at these plays and forget about it and move on, not forgetting that bitter taste that’s in our throats for this next team.”

The Lumberjacks will take on the UNLV Rebels at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 in Las Vegas.

UNLV dropped its season opener at home Thursday night 30-27 in triple overtime to the University of Minnesota.

A BAUMAN CENTRIC OFFENSE?

Starting at the spring scrimmage for the Lumberjacks and leading up to their season opener against the Sun Devils, NAU looked to rely heavily on its main weapon, Bauman.

TRAVIS GUY He has been a breakout star at NAU, recording more than 1,000 yards in his first two seasons.

Shortly after the second quarter began in Tempe, Bauman collided with an ASU defenseman and dropped. While the hit was nasty, he was able to walk off the field with assistance. From the looks of it, Bauman will have a heavy load this season and the question of whether he can handle it comes into play. According to head coach Jerome Souers, the offense does have more tools, they just were not able to implement them against the ASU defense.

“We really had intent to throw the ball more, but they are a tremendous pressure package. Their speed of the rush and their ability to cover took a lot of the passing game away,” Souers said.

“A one-dimensional fighter is a one-armed fighter and that’s not what we’re gonna be. Zach Bauman is a good ball carrier, but we need to have 11 guys contributing in order to have a successful offense.”

DEBOSKIE-JOHNSON BREAKS OUT Deboskie-Johnson graduated from the University of California-Berkley in spring 2012. While at Cal, Deboskie-Johnson redshirted, giving him one more year of eligibility. Following graduation, the Hamilton High School product transferred to NAU to play football with his younger brother Ca’leve Deboskie.

When Bauman left the game, the burden of the running game fell onto Deboskie-Johnson’s more-than-capable shoulders. He rushed for 82 yards on 15 carries, with a 34-yard run being his longest. With Deboskie-Johnson being bigger than Bauman, this offers a new facet to the Jacks running game, but one Souers will have to evaluate.

“When you have a new player entering your program, you’re not always sure what his capacity is going to be, particularly early on,” Souers said. “Covaughn is a very intelligent player, he’s talented [and] I thought he made some tough runs at times when there wasn’t a whole lot to work with. Because he’s a bigger guy, it’s a little different. He comes at a defense a little differently than Zach Bauman does. I think through the course of the year we’re gonna find that the kind of a one-two punch, a change up, will be good. I liked what I saw when he was running the football.”

States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Associations, know they have quite the season ahead of them.

Capturing six of the top 10 spots in the meet serves as some reassurance for what is in store for NAU. Redshirt freshman Alejandro Montano placed third with a time of 25:29.6, competing for the first time as a member of the team due to injury the past season, and was followed by redshirt sophomore and Oklahoma State University transfer Matt McElroy, who took fourth at 25:33.6. Sophomore Caleb Hoover managed to clinch the fifth spot in 25:34.2 despite being knocked down during the race and bear crawling to get himself back up.

“Every time I used to race last year for track, I would always kind of lie at the end and just fall all the way back and not do as well as I could have. But now coming out here, and now that I’m in a team and back in cross [country], I know that can’t happen,” Montano said. “I’ve been working mentally at the end just to have it and keep pushing, because it’s for my team now.”

Also showing strength was sophomore Chris Ganem and redshirt sophomore Cody Reed, who would take seventh and 10th overall with times of 25:40.9 and 25:51.6, respectively.

“I thought we executed better than all of last year, in terms of that execution,” said

director of track and field and cross country Eric Heins. “Great start to the season. We’re still not where we need to be but that’s fine, this is Sept. 1. Keep supporting each other, keep working on what we need to work on and we’ll be there at the end.”

Although running unattached for the meet, freshman Rolanda Jumbo was the first Lumberjack to cross the finish line in the women’s 5K race at a time of 17:33.0.

Sophomore Kylee Kieser would follow her up in 15th overall with a time of 18:03.4.

The women’s team would finish fourth overall for the day behind an impressive performance by Southern Utah University and in–state rivals ASU and UA. Meanwhile, Shrader and the rest of the men’s squad would gain bragging rights after sweeping the men’s overall title.

“There’s some magic on the team that I can’t exactly explain, but I’m out there and it’s an exciting feeling with this young team.

It’s an exciting time to be a Lumberjack and I can’t be happier than where I’m at,” Shrader said. “I know we can do some exciting things and there’s some goals we have at the national level and I think a good way to sum it up is we’re just ready to shock the country.”

The Lumberjacks will run again on Sept. 21 in the UCLA Invitational at the Robinson Ranch Golf Course in Santa Clarita, Calif.

returning scorer from the past season, opened up the contest in the eighth minute with her first goal of the season off of an assist from freshman midfielder Demi Schmeider.

The momentum, however, was not sustained for long.

“Because we were able to compete with them, I think that it helped us realize that we can stick with any team we play,” Tarver said.

Oklahoma showed its veteran savvy by putting up three unanswered goals in the 22nd, 57th and 70th minutes.

The Jacks improved on their previous season-high shot total of 10 by putting up 13 shots against the Sooners, who put 18 shots on goal.

“I was impressed with how quickly the team absorbed new information for the game against Oklahoma,” Luciano said.

“We made three mistakes that led to three goals . . . it’s a game I think we should have won.”

The Lumberjacks have begun to find their rhythm offensively after two consecutive double-digit shot totals.

“Anytime you play a veteran Big 12 team loaded with seniors and juniors and you come out with six freshmen, three sophomores and two seniors, you’re going to make young mistakes,” Luciano said.

“But the future is really promising for our program.”

Their next action of the 2012 season is this weekend against the University of San Francisco and the University of CaliforniaDavis.

Arts&Entertainment Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase presents Flagstaff’s best theatrics

NAU’s Wall Draw gives students unorthodox canvas

W

alking around Flagstaff, walls seem to be the public’s canvas. Nearly every corner contains an eye-catching work of art, be it murals downtown or sketches on the sidewalk. Flagstaff thrives on community involvement, and a major portion exists through public expression.

NAU will be hosting Wall Draw III, an event dedicated to expression and togetherness. On Sept.

4, there were blank walls begging to be drawn on by anyone who stepped inside the Beasley Art Gallery.

It was the exhibit’s first day open, but by the final day on Sept. 28, the walls will morph into a collage of drawings and words from students and the community, eventually forming a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

The main objective of the event is to get anyone and everyone involved. Freedom of expression is the backbone of Wall Draw. Now in its third year, the public is anticipating another success.

Chris Taylor, Beasley Gallery coordinator and fine arts instructor, is the main visionary responsible for the exhibit. With hardly any rules, his passion for uninhibited expression shows through at this event. Taylor explains, “It’s a way for the NAU community and the community at large in Flagstaff, or wherever, to come in and participate in a drawing show.”

His inspiration for Wall Draw stems from his passion for art and getting people who believe they “can’t draw” to break out of their comfort zone and see that they too can contribute. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., all

are welcome to grab ink and brushes, drawing and writing what they please.

Each year has out-performed the past, and this year is expected to be the biggest one yet. It is no surprise why: Drawing on walls has been a forbidden pleasure for nearly everyone since childhood.

“It’s a sort of a feeling of you’re not supposed to do it, so when you do it, it feels good,” Taylor said.

Despite the individuality of Wall Draw each year, there are often similar themes among illustrations. Taylor takes note of recurring images, “It’s fun when I see someone working on their cartoon and I’ll see their little cowboy and then I’ll see the cowboy show up somewhere else. So I can kind of see where their characters are moving.”

Although this exhibit focuses on individual expression, everyone’s contributions evolve and becomes a whole. The gallery provides media, including ink and brushes. They are all black and white; the material being the same contributes to the feeling of unity at the end. Taylor explains, “I tape out an area, so that way everybody is participating together, but within the boundaries of the tape marks.

After the month is over, when it looks like just one drawing someone does, when I take the tape away, it ends up becoming one huge shockwave of public expression.”

During the first week of October, Flagstaff will see yet another canvass displaying the unique creativity of its people.

In the past, the final reveal has been on the reception night; that is changing this year. The tape will be down the entire first week of October from 5-7 p.m., allowing the public to have gallery space

his year’s Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase played host to seven screenplays, selected in collaboration

by Theatrikos Theater Company and Northern Arizona University’s Creative Writing Program, were presented to celebrate the winners of a ten-minute play contest. The Lumberjack’s A&E writer, Paul Beimers, attended the showcase and previews the productions.

The High Road The first play is Seth Freeman’s The High Road.

Directed by Jill Gittleman and starring Tony Sutera, Linda Sutera and John Abrahamsen, the performance focuses on a couple, Billy and Linda, stuck in city traffic. Billy is frustrated with the other drivers, and fumes over the idiocy of mankind, along with everything else on the route, including the electronic billboards and conditions of the roads. Linda comments on his attitude, observing he is always negative when driving. After making a bet he could not be positive for a full five minutes, Billy does his best to become lighthearted and cheery, which eventually leads to him being arrested by an officer who suspects he is driving under the influence.

While the acting is certainly exaggerated, the actors do a fine job with the material they are given and are able to create an entertaining story with no more props than their talent and a couple of chairs.

Home Kerri Quinn’s Home is the second play.

Directed by Sherri Craig and starring Lynn Timmons-Edwards and Nick Rabe, the story is set within a family home. Cindy’s husband Steve,has recently passed away and her son Scott has been visiting in order to help her clean out the house. The performance is set at the end of Scott’s visit, where he tries in vain to convince his mother to leave the ghost of her husband behind and move in with him and his fiancee. An argument erupts between the two of them, with Cindy disapproving of Scott’s decisions in life, bemoaning everything from his choice of wife

to the strained relationship he always had with his father. Scott attempts to counter with observations of Steve’s flaws and contributions to the problem, but Cindy steadfastly refuses to admit any guilt on his part. The play ends with Cindy firmly stating she will not leave the house, as her husband is “still home.”

An emotional story, the play is quick to suck one in and convince the audience to emotionally invest in the characters. While the plot is one we have likely seen many times over (a son and father growing distant with one another), the piece is nonetheless a riveting one and its lack of a true resolution leaves the audience with a bittersweet, but resonate impression.

The Short List The Short List, directed by Bob Reynolds and starring Bruce Fox, Chris Gunn and Kerri Quinn, focuses on two middle-aged businessmen who are in the process of hiring new employees. Many of the applicants have recently been fired from Webcon — a highly successful business that was completely dismantled by its owner and founder who subsequently moved into relative seclusion for unknown reasons.

The two men, Hershberger and Stockman, are fed up with the whole ordeal and want to get it over with, trying to work through their lists of top choices in an attempt to agree on one. This does not quite work out, as each ridicules and mocks the other’s choice with every name mentioned. They finally call in one of the hopefuls: Samantha Worthington, who once worked for the Webcon’s owner as a “personal guru.” The two men poke fun at her title, while simultaneously trying to figure out what it is she actually did for the company and whether or not her advice may have led to the dismantling of Webcon.

After sarcastically advising one of the men to kill himself, Worthington leaves, and another hopeful is called in.

An interesting take on the business world and the repercussions of fame and success, the story is enjoyable largely because of the chemistry between Fox and Gunn. The pair works see SHOWCASE page 26

Downtown taken over by arts festival over the three-day weekend

he smells of kettle corn and barbeque filled the air as the usual tranquil atmosphere of Wheeler Park was transformed into a bustling festivity of art. Gray clouds covered the sky, but that didn’t deter art enthusiasts from showing up for the 20th-annual Art in the Park Festival held downtown this past Labor Day weekend. From jewelry and clothing to pottery and paintings, vendors had something to interest everyone.

The festival is always held over both the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends, increasing the amount of available art in the Flagstaff community.

The Flagstaff Art in the Park Facebook page describes the event as a display of “fine art and fine crafts designed and shown by . . . nearly 100 artists from across the Southwest.”

One of the artists who had a booth at the festival was Maryann Hamel. She displayed her handmade creations to promote her business, Curliosity Metalworks.

On how she got started making her designs, Hamel explained, “I got a work-study job at the craft center of my college . . . and then I worked in engineering, and when my kids came along, I picked this up as a part-time job. The older they got [and] the less they needed me, the bigger this business became and now I’m putting them through college.”

Hamel said she has been coming up to Flagstaff to be a part of the festival for the past 10 years.

“I’m from Phoenix and, even though it’s a lot of work, I like it because it’s nice and cool up here and I usually do okay,” Hamel said.

She works with copper and brass wires to create original pieces of art with a one-of-a-kind feel.

“I would say [I get ideas from] my own creativity and requests from customers. I listen to what my customers want and a lot of the designs I have now started from a request,” she said.

The hanging ornament designs on display in her corner tent include motorcycles, birds, angels, cacti and dogs. Placed along the edges of the booth were beautiful wind chimes twisted around

marble spheres, which caught the light perfectly.

The occasional addition of silver or stones set off the designs nicely and complement the copper.

“People like the copper because . . . this is the copper state; it makes a good souvenir,” Hamel said. “My pieces are small, so if anyone is travelling, they’re small and lightweight [enough] to carry home.”

This past weekend had mostly ideal conditions for the festival. Despite the occasional downpour of rain and subsequent sprinkling, many people from outside Flagstaff flocked to Wheeler Park for the semi-annual event.

Rod Tolman and his wife Kathy came up from Mesa to visit this weekend and get out of the notorious Valley heat.

“I was just reading in the paper this week and saw that they have the county fair up here and the arts festival, so I called my wife on the phone. I said, ‘What do you think about, for Labor Day, going up to Flagstaff?’” Rod Tolman said.

Lucky for them, the Tolmans made the right decision to come here. After stopping by the fair on Saturday, they spent Sunday afternoon relax-

ing at Wheeler Park and enjoying all of the art on display.

“We’ve really been impressed with this arts festival . . . they have some excellent displays here,” Kathy Tolman said.

Aside from the main attraction of the artists, the whole weekend also featured live music through each of the days. Some of the musicians included Kent Simmons, Ed Kabotie, the Buzzard Brothers, Brian DeMarco and Matt Hall.

One group of performers especially attention-catching to the festival-goers was the Al Rakasaat Middle Eastern Dance Group. Taught by dance choreographer and percussionist Karen Custer Thurston, the troupe danced and twirled around, using their clothes as props as much as their bodies.

Kids were kept busy with several bounce houses and a petting zoo when they got tired of the art.

Overall, it was a nice, peaceful weekend in Flagstaff. Kids and dogs alike enjoyed themselves and people got the opportunity to take home handmade pieces of art.

well together, and generates quite a few laughs throughout the course of a plot otherwise gloomy or stale. Quinn, though her role is small, complements the other two with her performance, which lends an air of mystery and foreboding to the proceedings.

History of Art Criticism

Snip Written by Doug McGlothlin, directed by Lynn Timmons-Edwards and starring Clinton Craig, Sherri Craig and Tony Sutera, Snip centers on a couple, Dan and Cathy, who are receiving a doctor’s consultation. Dan is planning on getting a vasectomy, which Cathy is unsure of. She wonders if they may one day want another child.

Her worries are not helped when their consulter, Dr. Johnson, is revealed to be a bit of a child at heart, constantly cracking jokes during the meeting. The couple ends up leaving in a huff.

Lighthearted and good-humored, the story is a straightforward little piece that tackles a relatively sensitive subject gracefully. It is entertaining and informative, and keeps the momentum moving.

Student Teacher Bob Reynolds’ Student Teacher, directed

by John Abrahamsen and starring Chris Gunn, Nick Rabe and Amber Stonebraker, is a story taking place in a hotel room where a teacher,

Store for Men Store for Men is written by NAU professor Mary Tolan. Directed by Josh Savrin and starring Bruce Fox, Clinton Craig and Linda Sutera, it deals with a father and son as they travel across the country, toward California, on Route 66 with a shipment of cattle. When the son, Sam, mentions his intentions to attend college and become an architect, the father belittles him, believing he will one day become a trucker or army recruit — just like his older brother. The father decides to stop at a “Store for Men,” believing it will provide the perfect opportunity for Sam to lose his virginity. Much to his chagrin, it is revealed to be a clothing store, and he is left to wait in the truck while his son purchases a new hat. As they continue their trip, Sam promises to visit his father during the summers when he is attending college, and his father eventually admits he is proud of him.

Despite an odd ending to the night, the story is a charming one. The characters of the father and son play off one another well, and the story’s direction takes a nice turn near the end, allowing it to finish on a satisfying note.

The lights go up. The cast files in and takes its bow. The directors are introduced and complimented on their contributions. Awards are presented to the writers of the plays with certificates for their achievements as finalists. As the evening draws to a close, the audience files out, pausing to interact with the performers and take part in the complimentary refreshments.

The Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase is the perfect production for any student looking to see the best of Flagstaff ’s local screenplays or anyone looking for a evening of entertainment.

Daniel Curzon’s History of Art Criticism, directed by Josh Savrin and starring Amber Stonebraker, focuses on the reactions of various passersby to a chalk drawing that has been etched onto a city street. The audience witnesses the varying opinions of the people who view it, ranging from awe and appreciation to disgust and incredulity. The play ends with the drawing vanishing as a citizen remarks: “There used to be something important here.”

Questionably the highlight of the evening, the performance is both interesting and entertaining. The piece, despite featuring over two dozen characters, has only one actress, who manages to convincingly portray every persona the script throws at her. Even without the many props she employs, she manages to be entertaining and distinct with every one of her characters.

Despite the fact the staging consists of nothing more than a girl repeatedly walking across the floor while staring at a blank spot on the ground, the story manages to inspire laughs and thought.

Paul, and one of his former students, Matt, are discussing an upcoming convention the former will be speaking at. Matt confronts Paul over his marrying of another student, Carol, whom Matt has always been interested in; Matt gets him to admit he slept with Carol while she was still technically his student. Matt also reveals the conversation is being recorded and broadcasted to colleagues, which will cause him to be fired, thus losing his pension and tenure. Carol is also there and reveals she is now in a relationship with Matt and planning on using the video to divorce Paul.

Paul, however, is happy over this and leaves after warning Matt that Carol is manipulative and unstable.

The twisted storyline and dark subject matter here provides a stark contrast to the previous piece, which increases its impact. It is absorbing and disturbing and lingers with the viewer well after it ends.

Starship Troopers: Invasion

hen it comes to putting out a new record, Glassnote Records knows good releases. With artists such as The Temper Trap, Phoenix, Mumford & Sons, Oberhofer and Childish Gambino, it is no wonder Glassnote Records snagged the Irish-trio Two Door Cinema Club this second time around.

It has been two antagonizing long years since their first release, Tourist History, but certainly well worth the wait for their sophomore album, Beacon. Released Sept. 4, Beacon audibly illustrates a mellower Two Door Cinema Club that evokes a darker (and ultimately more produced) sound. Unfortunately, this sudden shift in Two Door Cinema Club’s style has placed them in a difficult situation: no longer unknown wonders from the United Kingdom but neither well-weathered experts of the music universe.

Beacon starts off with “Next Year”: a beat straight-sourced from the Tron soundtrack with a faux build and a crescendo that leads nowhere by the end of four minutes and eleven seconds. Two Door Cinema Club gets better with “Handshake,” sounding more like Tourist History than anything new. Lyrically speaking, it sounds as though frontman Alex Trimbel sings more of lingering heartbreak as an open invitation to his audience rather than a mile marker of his experiences.

“Wake Up” easily does the opposite of its title, never truly rising to the occasion. Two Door Cinema Club has put away almost all instrumental talent en lieu of digital production by Jackknife Lee, who has done work for both REM and Bloc Party (a downgrade, in our opinion). “Sun” is just about on the same page, sounding like a rejected track by The Bravery and half-hearted lyrics, “What would you say? / What would you say? / What would you do?”

It picks up again at “Someday,” once again sounding like a B-side Tourist History except for the vague, bruised heart from questioning, “Where do we start / If we will end apart?”

Their single, “Sleep Alone” is probably the best track of the album but, really, nothing at all to brag about. It is still catchy with a relatable topic about a one-night stand that most all can recall at one point in their life. Additionally, it is probably the least produced track of the whole album, allowing for the old Two Door Cinema Club to show of its boyish talent.

“The World Is Watching You,” while rhythmically laid-back and enchanting with Valentina’s backup vocals, the track is very similar to the likes of “Wake Up” and lacks very little, if any, variation.

The final four tracks are the rather pathetic comedown to a bummer album. Ultimately, if Beacon were a lighthouse beam, it would be pretty weak and most likely fail at warning any incoming ships of the rocky shore ahead. Beacon had the potential to shine as Two Door Cinema Club’s more educated album, but resulted in an overproduced and neutral-sounding album that is neither distasteful nor impressive.

Much to the dismay of Two Door Cinema Club fans, Beacon does not satisfy any craving for their original underdog accomplishments.

t’s never fun being a fan of a constantly disappointing series, as I’m sure most fans of the Starship Trooper films will confess. Now to handle the inevitable questions about the use of “film” in a plural sense: Yes, there have been direct-to-DVD sequels to the 1997 original and they were both terrible. Hero of the Federation (2004) lacked any of the charm or excitement from its predecessor, and Marauder (2012) overdid the social satire, with a much poorer budget. Can the fourth film, Starship Troopers: Invasion, break this trend of bad movies with its switch to computer animation and the return of familiar characters? Bits of nostalgia aside, it cannot.

Taking place sometime after Marauder, with the war against the bug-like Arachnids still raging on, Invasion begins with Dr. Carl Jenkins (Justin Doran) commandeering Captain Carmen Ibanez’s (Luci Christian) ship for his hidden agenda. When the ship goes dark, Carmen and two units of the Mobile Infantry board the ship to investigate, only to find it has been taken over by a supposedly captured

tarting with the 1973 release of The Exorcist, it would take both my hands, and the hands of several friends, to count how many possession movies have been made. Some are terrible, but some are truly scary, prompting you to keep a vial of holy water on your nightstand, just in case. This year’s The Possession fits somewhere in the middle: It’s not a dull or terrible movie, but it’s also not one to haunt people for years to come.

A year after his divorce, Clyde Brenek (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) takes his two daughters to spend the weekend with him in his new, rural home. During this time, he takes his family to a local yard sale, where his youngest daughter, Emily (Natasha Calis) comes upon an old, wooden box with He-

“Queen Bug,” who plans to steer the ship for Earth in order to infest it with her army.

With some outside help from General Johnny Rico (David Matranga), the team must find a way to stop the Queen while also uncovering the new experiments Carl had been up to.

I don’t understand why the sequels feel the need to take this galactic war and compact it into small skirmishes. The first movie focused on a full military campaign occurring when the young Johnny Rico saw his friends die in battle after battle.

With Invasion, characters get picked off so quickly I had to occasionally rewind and watch the scene again. I also found myself loudly asking the movie questions, like, “Why did one character manage to die not only silently (the Arachnids tear people to shreds), but also assumeing a misleadingly crouched position?” Did I mention the ship was also spiraling down towards a planet? There wasn’t a speck of blood on him; I got very frustrated. Still, it was fun seeing Rico, Carmen and Carl back together.

Compared to the two films before it, the acting in Invasion was actually more

than tolerable.

Most of the characters kind of just fade into the background, so their voice actors didn’t have much to work with, but the main cast managed to take their roles seriously and avoid cheesy deliveries. It’s very disappointing that Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris didn’t return for their respective roles as Rico, Carmen and Carl, but their replacements make the change bearable enough.

The film’s animation is clearly the best thing it has going for it. While it has some quirks, like the occasionally off lip-syncing (it was initially for a Japanese audience), I enjoyed looking at Invasion while I was yelling at it. The Arachnids, the spaceships and the soldiers’ armor were all highly detailed, and the weapons didn’t look like the fake, plastic toys seen in the other installments (which is so ironic it’s sad). All in all, it would be a good idea to keep with Invasion’s design if there are going to be any more additions to the franchise.

Starship Troopers: Invasion, when looking past the animation and the nostalgia, is just as big a disappointment as the rest of the sequels.

Possession brew writing carved on its sides. When Emily accidently discovers how to open it, she suddenly begins to act strangely, distancing herself from her family and even becoming violent whenever someone touches her box. Concerned, Clyde tries to unravel the mysteries behind the box, discovering it was meant to hold a demon — a demon needing the pure, innocent mind of a child to give itself a new life.

Little girls becoming possessed by demons is nothing new (again, The Exorcist); but then again, little girls can be very creepy, so I can’t really blame this route. Still, nothing new was done with it. It doesn’t help that possessed Emily isn’t subtle about it from the get go, which kind of hurt the suspense for me. I will say, however, The Possession nails something very important about horror movies by making you care about

the hero. Clyde is a good father and an allaround nice guy; as an audience member, I really wanted him to save his little girl and survive the process.

From the first time he appears on screen, Morgan makes Clyde a very likeable character, as well as a reasonable one. Kyra Sedgwick as the mother seemed a little off to me, though, because she wasn’t quite into her role.

What really stood out to me was the use of the demon’s voice, which was so low I wasn’t even sure I heard it at times. Believe me, there are few things creepier than thinking you heard someone talk when there’s no one around you.

While nowhere near a revolutionary film, The Possession managed to hold its own as another addition to the horror genre.
