Top majors for 2013 commencement

he most popular majors among 2013 graduates are elementary education, biology (including environmental science-biology), psychology, hotel and restaurant management (HRM) and nursing, all of which are being pursued as Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees. This year, there is a similar pattern with these top undergraduate academic plans as last year.

For the class of 2012, the top five graduating majors were elementary education, biology, HRM, nursing and criminology and criminal justice.

Within these top five undergraduate majors, few changes have occurred. The only noteworthy change is that the degree of psychology has been added to the list while criminology and criminal justice has been eliminated. see MAJORS page 5

PoliceBeat April 28 At 3:48 a.m., staff at McConnell Hall called Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) to request assistance in serving a denial of access on a student at his off-campus residence.

Officers located the subject at his residence.

He was arrested and booked in the Coconino County Detention Facility (CCDF) on charges of criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and assault.

At 10:45 p.m., staff of Allen Hall called to report one of their residents had threatened another.

Upon investigation, officers decided to defer the student on charges of disorderly conduct.

April 27 At 1:11 a.m., a report was received about an intoxicated individual trying to get people to fight with him. The incident occurred outside Hilltop Townhomes.

The subject was cited and released for disorderly conduct.

At 3:20 p.m., a call was received from NAU staff pointing NAUPD in the direction of three individuals in Citizens Cemetery. The staff member stated the subjects yelled at them and made threats in the San Francisco Parking Garage.

Officers found one of the subjects and conducted a field investigation. The subject was told to leave the area and he complied. The other two subjects were not located.

At 7:09 p.m., a call was received from a victim witness reporting a sexual assault that had taken place at Gabaldon Hall.

The victim was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC). The victim and victim witness were interviewed by NAUPD. The case remains open pending further investigation.

April 26 At 3:04 a.m., a call was received from the Ponderosa building about four panhandlers outside the structure.

Responding officers encountered the subjects and asked them to leave the area. The subjects complied.

At 3:23 p.m., NAUPD received a request from the Flagstaff Police Department (FPD) to assist with traffic control for a funeral procession.

An NAUPD officer was dispatched.

April 25 At 12:46 p.m., information was received from the Coconino County Sherriff ’s Office (CCSO) regarding a possible crime against a child at family housing in 2002.

The case remains open pending further investigation.

At 10:17 p.m., staff of Gabaldon Hall called NAUPD with a request that they serve an individual with a denial of access.

Officers attempted to locate the subject and serve them. The officers reported negative contact

with the subject.

April 23 At 3:59 p.m., employees of the Ponderosa building reported a subject sleeping in front of the building.

After awakening the subject, officers conducted a field interview. The subject was asked to leave the area; a request with which he complied.

At 6:34 p.m. Parking Services called to report the owner of a vehicle was refusing to allow parking service employees to place a boot on his vehicle.

Officers responded and were able to diffuse the matter. The vehicle owner and Parking Services agreed that the matter could be resolved the following day at the Parking Services office.

April 22 At 1:12 a.m., an NAUPD officer called to report he was in contact with a subject at Beaver Street and Franklin Avenue.

The subject appeared to be involved in an act of animal cruelty. FPD was called in to assist and the case was turned over to them.

At 12:36 p.m., staff of Information Technology Services (ITS) reported to NAUPD an unknown person or persons had been tampering with the NAU computer network since Feb. 22.

The case is open pending further investigation.

or most of the semester now, our editorial staff has decided to do away with the “Letter from the Editor,” because it seemed to be a monotonous space filler that could be better used than for endless rambling from the editor in chief and managing editor about the glory of the newsroom.

However, for the last paper of the semester and my last semester working for The Lumberjack, I have written a special reflection/goodbye letter from me to my staff. My first day at NAU as a freshman back in the fall of 2010 was also my first day in the newsroom. Coming from my high school newspaper I was familiar with the chaos and “weirdness” of a newsroom, but I did not expect to write four stories for the first issue of my college career, nor did I expect any of them to go on the front page. Alas, in times of stress and transition, desperate times call for desperate measures and to my shock and awe, I ended up with a story on the front page.

From there on out it was full steam ahead for me and I steadily worked my way up through the chain of command, knowing full well my ultimate goal was to be editor in chief. Despite my headstrong and sometimes overbearing personality, I managed to make some of the best friends I have ever had in this newsroom. Some of them are no longer here and some of them will continue on next semester without me, but one thing is clear: I would not be the person I am today without them. I cannot speak highly enough about the amazing people I have worked with on this publication. Each and every one of them brings something unique to the table to make this newspaper the best it can be. Although we all butt heads from time to time and tension boils over on “Endless Edit Tuesday,” we would not be the tight-knit, dysfunctional family we are today without the ups and downs.

So to my staff, I thank you for making my time as editor in chief unforgettable. Even though we will all go our separate ways eventually, The Lumberjack never really leaves you, whether it’s the memories we’ve made or the work ethic we’ve learned, a little piece of The Lumberjack will stay with you always.

Before I completely burst into tears, I need to thank our faculty adviser, Rory Faust. Rory has been and will continue to be one of the most influential people in my life and I will miss him more than words can say. Rory: thank you so much for everything you have done for me over the past three years. I would not have been able to achieve everything I have without your support and guidance. I think I speak for the entire staff when I say, “because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”

Good luck next semester and have a great summer, Lumberjack staff.

The top degree being pursued among undergraduates is elementary education.

There are currently 936 students enrolled in the elementary education program and 202 will receive their undergraduate degree this May. This year in particular, elementary education has significant numbers. Elementary education is not just popular with undergraduates, but with graduate students as well.

This May, the College of Education will award the greatest number of masters and doctoral degrees of any college.

This commencement will provide 383 students with their masters and 29 with doctoral degrees. Elementary education has been given the title as the top-graduating major for the second consecutive year in a row.

Larry Gallagher, associate dean of the College of Education, is proud of the title elementary education has been given.

“NAU started as a normal school, [a] school for teachers,” Gallagher said. “We take that seriously. We know that the state looks at us as the leader of teacher education. We plan to continue preparing wellrespected teachers by remaining committed and with the help of our dedicated faculty

members.”

Gallagher stated there are only two jobs the world relies on entirely — parenting kids and educating them. Gallagher understands the importance of education and plans to continue being a contributing factor in the success of these graduates in the field of education.

Psychology is currently the second most popular graduating major.

Thanks to effective curriculum revision, there will be 158 undergraduate students walking the stage with a B.S. in psychology at the end of this semester.

The number of biology and environmental science-biology comes third on the list, with 803 students enrolled and 137 students receiving their degree this spring.

The school of hotel and restaurant management will be graduating 133 students.

HRM adviser Kim Knowles is thrilled.

“I’m happy,” Knowles said. “These numbers are great. HRM continues to grow and produce successful graduates.”

She believes the economy is picking up and said graduates are starting to hear about multiple job opportunities opposed to just one.

The last of the top five majors, in terms of commencement numbers, is nursing.

However, according to the office of Planning and Institutional Research (PAIR), criminology & criminal justice was the fifth most popular major with 706 students enrolled in the program, but their fall Graphsemester enrollment numbers do not pertain to May’s commencement. Therefore, nursing is the fifth of the top-graduating majors.

There are about 139 students who will be graduating with various degrees in the disciplines of engineering: civil, mechanical, environmental and electrical. NAU will

also graduate 45 students from the physical therapy program.

Aside from NAU’s Flagstaff Mountain Campus, NAU Yuma will graduate 79 students in their bachelor’s of business administration program.

These statistics reflect the curriculum: professors and students are working in allegiance for one goal — to receive a diploma.

These select programs are exceeding all expectations of them by constantly graduating more and more scholars and preparing them for their preferred workplace.

NAU standard bearers selected to lead college

s the end of the semester approaches, so too does the end of a journey for hundreds of students here at NAU. Soon they will file in ranks into the commencement ceremony and at their head will be the standard bearers, selected to represent all the schools within their college.

Emily Forest, a senior double major in theater studies and history and the undergraduate standard bearer for the College of Arts and Letters, said she was honored to be chosen.

“The fact that not only was my work and dedication to the theater department was recognized as honored [as the outstanding graduating senior for the theatre department] but to know that I was chosen to represent the entire College of Arts and Letters at graduation is a big deal,” Forest said.

Forest also said she thinks one thing that helped her stand out was her double major.

“I have two majors within the College of Arts and Letters [history and theatre] and I also work in the front office for the Department of Theater and the School of Music,” Forest said. “In addition to that I have maintained above a 3.9 GPA for my entire career here.”

Forest said the best part about being selected as a standard bearer is the public acknowledgement of her dedication to her college career.

“Being recognized for the all the hard work that I have done over the past four years by getting to represent the college of arts and letters at graduation is the best part about being selected,” Forest said.

“It is nice to be recognized and rewarded for hard work and dedication.”

Two standard bearers will be selected from each college to lead their fellow students to commencement, one graduate and one undergraduate apiece.

Laura Theimer, coordinator for the College of Education, said their selection process is based on nominations and narrowed down by both scholastic and leadership prowess.

“Basically what we do is we send out a call to all our faculty and staff to nominate students,”

Theimer said. “They must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, must show leadership and involvement not only within our college but within our community and then we have a small committee of faculty and staff review the nominations and determine who the standard bearer will be.”

Thiemer said in the College of Education, when there is close competition for the standard bearer, one exceptional candidate becomes standard bearer and the other becomes the distinguished senior of the year Rebecca Rice, a senior communication studies major and the undergraduate standard bearer for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, said she thought her drive was what set her apart from other candidates.

“I love to learn and I always wanted to work hard for my degree and in my classes,” Rice said. “I like to solve problems and explore new questions, and I think my classes, both liberal studies and communication classes, have helped me grow and think critically. I really have tried to enjoy college and make the most of my education by talking with professors and learning from them.”

Rice also said her extracurricular activities helped her win the spot as standard bearer.

“I have worked for KJACK radio station as the promotions manager, and I helped found Lambda Pi Eta, the communication studies honors society,” Rice said. “I am also in the Honors Program and was part of the Honors G.U.R.U.S. program for two years. I also studied abroad in Athens, Greece for a semester. I work on campus as a student intern for Undergraduate Admissions. Any way that I could get involved on campus, I did. If I saw something that interested me, I wanted to do it.”

Rice said being selected as standard bearer is a nice capstone to her academic career.

“I am so happy to carry the standard out onto the field, knowing that many of my peers who I have worked with in clubs and classes for four years will be following me,” Rice said. “NAU has meant so much to me . . . I have met so many amazing people at NAU and I am honored to graduate with them.”

Commencement speakers share NAU connection

he month of May carries with it many things: the onset of better weather, finals, summer break and for many fortunate students, the final step toward the job market — graduation.

The May 10 and 11 commencement ceremonies offer figures that have impacted NAU and the community as a whole.

NAU Office of Public Affairs detailed the schedule and background of these four exceptional individuals who will speak at the various ceremonies: Ernest Calderon, Arizona Board of Regents president; Kerry Blume, CEO of United Way; Paul Keim, director of NAU’s Center for Genetics and Genomics and Nancie Lindblom, 2013 Arizona Teacher of the Year.

The press release stated, “Northern Arizona University will award honorary degrees to a dedicated advocate for higher education [Ernest Calderon], a nonprofit leader working to further community initiatives [Kerry Blume], a trailblazer in genetics research [Paul Keim] and an exceptional educator [Nancie Lindblom].”

“These people have done enough in their lines of work and in the community to have impacted Flagstaff and NAU,” Tom Bauer, NAU director of public affairs, said.

Bauer then spoke directly about Keim, known by the Flagstaff community for his advancement in the field of genetics.

“This is the first time we have honored a university professor and he is one who is a little different for us,” Bauer said. “He is a former student, professor and a longtime supporter of NAU who is world-renowned for his work in the field of genetics.”

Another speaker who has been overwhelmingly

successful and features a rich history with NAU is Calderon, who is, among many other titles, president emeritus of the Arizona Board of Regents.

“I graduated in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in political science,” Calderon said. “I was ASNAU president in 1978 and 1979. I’ve served on the NAU alumni association on the board of directors and I currently serve on the NAU Foundation board of directors. I was also a member of the board of regents for eight and a half years.”

Calderon continues to aid in the educational process and encouragement of students to this day.

It is clear by the many bonds formed through the years and tireless community service, Calderon was deservedly selected as one of the commencement speakers for the graduating class of 2013.

“I’m hoping to share of them some lessons learned and maybe some guidepost to help them have a more fulfilling life,” Calderon said.

While Calderon has been immensely prosperous in his lengthy academic career, along with his professional and public life, he still recognized the importance of receiving such an honor to speak at NAU. Moreover, it seemed to be a chance to pass his knowledge down to a new generation of college graduates who would eventually blaze a path into the future.

“It’s a distinct honor. It is something I’m humbled about, and I am really thrilled. I was pleased something like this had happen. I was surprised by the invitation but pleasantly so,” Calderon said.

Another educator who will be speaking at the NAU commencement ceremony is 2013 Arizona Teacher of the Year, Nancie Lindblom.

Aside from being a teacher, Lindblom was also awarded the highest honor an Arizona teacher can receive.

is a member of both the Arizona Council for History Education and the Arizona Council for Social Studies.

“I chose NAU due to my major,” Lindblom said. “I was in education, and I looked at their program and saw that it was better than what I felt the other programs in the state were, but what I loved about NAU was the community up there.”

Lindblom stated she was quite humbled in regard to the honor itself and felt mostly overwhelmed by the recent influx of awards and recognition she was receiving for teaching far beyond the minimal standards of education.

Many wonder what makes people like Lindblom succeed and achieve so much so quickly.

“Yes, you’re getting a degree and it’s all over, but is not over,” Lindblom said. “I don’t think that learning ever ends, and of course as a teacher I would specifically say that but if you want to grow in any professional area you have to keep educating yourself. It might not even be a specific, ‘I will go on for my masters or my doctorate,’ but that you’re constantly learning and improving and growing. If you stop right now after you graduate you’re not going to be very successful.”

In the case of Lindblom, both community and a self-motivated drive pushed her to become a stand-out individual in her field.

Lindblom will also be recognized at the 2 p.m. ceremony on May 11 for her achievements.

Despite the negativity regarding post-college job numbers, these speakers insist the future is hopeful.

With drive, education and commitment, the path ahead is an open book just as graduates close their own textbooks for the last time.

Northern AZ forest thinning to prevent future fires

ith summer approaching quickly, certain precautions are being taken in attempts to protect Flagstaff and northern Arizona. In 2012, Flagstaff voters approved a $10 million plan.

This protection plan will allow for the thinning of 2.4 million acres of nearby forest, including Coconino, Kaibab, Tonto and Apache-Sitgreaves.

In 2012, there were 14 forest fires in the western United States. Flagstaff has seen its share of forest fires. In 2010, Flagstaff was impacted by the Schultz Fire on the east side of the San Francisco Peaks. Some officials believe the Schultz Fire is an important reason the proposal was such a success with the voters.

“Had the fire been on the other side, downtown Flagstaff and NAU would have been impacted,” said Liz Archuleta, chairwoman of the Coconino County Board of Supervisors. “It’s much better to protect ourselves than fight the fire.”

Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project (FWPP) will be put into action this August.

The project is intended to help prevent forest fires and post-fire flooding in the Rio de Flag and Lake Mary areas. These locations were selected based on the potential of high-

intensity floods if these forests are not controlled by the fire department.

Lake Mary alone is responsible for nearly 50 percent of Flagstaff ’s drinking water.

The FWPP project will consist of roughly 10,543 acres, with the treatment including mechanical, hand thinning and prescribed burning.

“Thinning forest is in most cases a great option,” said sophomore forestry major Chad Blake. “Of course it does have its exceptions. Thinning provides room for growth and in most cases a healthier forest. Most the young forests are contested, with competition in light, water, and minerals. Overall thinning helps the health of the forest.”

A few changes will be implemented with the new protection project. Campfires will now be restricted in the Dry Lake Hills to help prevent the potential of human-induced wildfires. There will be certain road closures and decommissioning in attempts to prevent the potential human-caused wildfires in the project area; help restore forest vegetation and prevent the cause of erosion due to the fires.

“We need to look at our forest as infrastructures,” said Arizona state forester Scott Hunt. “This project is going to be a true success story.”

Notable students receive Gold Axe award

he university held the traditional Gold Axe award ceremony to honor 43 outstanding graduating seniors who excel in academics, student involvement and community outreach. Four were also granted the prestigious President’s Prize.

Among those who were granted the Gold Axe, Bret Clawson, Brianna Gomez, Nicole Malumphy and Blaise Caudill were also awarded the President’s Prize for their achievements, both in and outside of the classroom.

“It was pretty surprising when they called my name,” Gomez said. “I’m completely honored to have received the award.”

Gomez distinguished herself at NAU by taking a large interest in student affairs, first by becoming a resident assistant (RA) and reaching out to better the experience of student life and then serving as president of the Residence Hall Association. Gomez is also a member of the Chain Gang, which gives moral support to NAU athletics and participates in community service.

“I feel like I’ve done a lot on campus in the past four years,” Gomez said.

Fellow prize winner Clawson, graduating in chemistry and biomedical sciences, is quick to humble himself despite his achievements.

“I should deflect as much credit for this as I possibly can,” Clawson said. “There are really a lot of people that were extremely influential.”

Clawson acted as a student instructor and was involved in Cardinal Key Honor Society, which volunteered around the city of Flagstaff. Clawson began the Student Undergraduate Research Council (SURC) and utilizes NAU’s research lab to study plague, though given all this he does not forget where he started.

“I come from humble beginnings here. When I first started off I was an average student at best,” Clawson said.

He credits his turnaround to the environment at NAU and the access to mentors and professors.

“I really learned to increase my expectations of myself and have more academic confidence and discipline and a lot of that comes from the people that I was able to surround myself with here,” Clawson said.

Amanda Jochimsen, a Gold Axe award winner and graduating chemistry major, explained the Gold Axe is not given for academic accomplishments only but to well-rounded individuals.

“They want people to come out of here with a good education and good experiences too,” Jochimsen said.

She is currently the vice president of the chemistry club and an RA in Reilly Hall. Jochimsen is also a member of the Hall council and is involved in student affairs.

“I think what I’m called for, is to help others in life,” Jochimsen said.

Margaret Landis, a graduating student in physics and astronomy, mentioned her involvement in scientific outreach programs. Landis has volunteered at the campus telescope for four years. She participated in a number of research projects and had an internship with the National Science Foundation where she spent time studying proto-planetary accretion discs.

“When I ended up winning the award it was a nice finish . . . it was a final pat on the back from the university I really appreciated,” Landis said. After graduation, Landis plans to pursue a Ph.D in physics and astronomy.

Clawson holds nothing back when crediting his positive experience at NAU for his success.

Before attending NAU, he was at Arizona State University before changing majors and moving to NAU, he says, because of the influence of his aunts, who both graduated from NAU. One is a former President’s Prize winner.

During the ceremony, seven honorable mentions were named as distinguished by their colleges. Morgan Grundy, elementary education major; Hannah Heivilin, double major in art history and chemistry; and Renee Rideout, health sciences major, are among the honored.

The distinguished students prized with their awards all agree about the significant impact NAU has had on their lives.

NAU Action Research Teams to showcase sustainability projects

n Fall 2009, graduate students in the masters of sustainable communities program, undergraduates, faculty, students in the First Year Seminar Program and others came together to form Action Research Teams (ARTs). The ARTs aim to inspire graduate and undergraduate students to think critically about sustainable communities through hands-on action research experience.

There are more than 13 of these teams working with campus and community partners. Some teams include Students for Sustainable Living and Urban Gardening (SSLUG) — a team that focuses on gardening and sustainable living practices, the Action Group for Water Advocacy (AGWA), Public Achievement, a team that encourages students to design and implement their own projects that address serious public issues and even a team focused around sustainable economics known as Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Cooperative Economics (SECE).

Lauren Berutich, campus and community-based ARTs coordinator, believes participating in the ARTs is reason enough for celebration.

“Participating in the ARTs provides a clear vision for the future of sustainability and community development — it provides a space for democratic action and enables folks to come together to redefine public spaces, citizenship, democracy, freedom and ideas around diversity,” Berutich said.

According to Rom Coles, founder of the ARTs and professor in the sustainable communities graduate program, the ARTs also bring undergraduate and graduate students of NAU into the community. “[The ARTs] connect students to broader communities by providing a setting in which they participate in creating community,” Coles said.

Students have the opportunity to work with community partners on vital public issues; this gives students the opportunity to work in a realm they are not used to in campus life.

The ARTs work under the model of engaged pedagogy, which is learning by doing. The process teaches students how to ask questions, evaluate a problem or set of problems and to work towards solving those problems through project development and community outreach.

“Engaged pedagogy connects particular issues with large problems and brings about specific and broad-ranging responses,” Coles said.

For Nina Porter, a senior chemistry secondary education and women’s and gender studies major, working with ARTs has had a huge impact on her life.

“It has provided me with community connections, leadership experience, a strong sense of self, confidence, democratic empowerment and a strong sense of hope,” Porter said.

Undergraduate and graduate students are given the opportunity to facilitate and take on leadership roles in the different ARTs. “As a facilitator, I organize events and plan meetings; I meet with all members of the team individually and I empower team members through our individual meetings and by encouraging them to organize around their passions,” Porter said.

Porter has worked extensively with the Q&A ART, which focuses on assisting the community to respect diversity through accepting and supporting the LGBTQIA community.

Kim Curtis, first year seminar professor and cofounder of the ARTs, believes the ARTs have been a place of hopefulness.

“It has been paramount [working with] different kinds of students and connecting them with community partners,” Curtis said. “The ARTs give students an appreciation for the possibility.”

At the end of the semester, each team holds a symposium to showcase their hard work through the semester, the different projects they pursued and challenges and successes that arose from the semester.

This semester’s symposium will take place on May 2 from 5:30-8 p.m., the first half starting in the Cline Library Assembly Room with a speech from a keynote speaker. The symposium will then continue in the University Union where students will showcase the different projects they researched during the semester, with questions and answers to follow.

Political activist Angela Davis comes to NAU

ow many remember the names Carole Robertson, Denise McNair, Addie Mae Collins or Cynthia Wesley?” said Ricardo Guthrie, assistant professor of ethnic studies, during his introduction of Angela Davis on April 24 at Prochnow Auditorium on the NAU campus.

On Sept. 15, 1963, a bomb was placed under the steps of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. killing four young girls in a Sunday school class.

“I actually had personal connections with all of them and I happened to be studying in Paris at the time this bombing took place,” Davis said. She was born and raised in Birmingham.

Her mother was friends with the mother of one of the victims and the sister of Carole Robertson was one of Davis’ closest friends.

The bomber, Ku Klux Klan member Robert Chambliss, while known to the community as the perpetrator, was not prosecuted for the crime until 1977.

The audience at Prochnow was a mix of students and older members of the community. While the students may have learned about Davis either from classes they have taken or through their own activism, the older generation would remember Davis’ rise to national prominence in the late ‘60s and ‘70s. Activity in the civil rights movement and being a Communist Party member brought her to the attention of then-governor of California, Ronald Reagan. Reagan tried unsuccessfully to have Davis barred from teaching at any California State University.

In 1970, a warrant was issued for Davis’ arrest in connection with the abduction and murder of Judge Harold Haley in Marin County, Calif. J. Edgar Hoover soon placed Davis on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list, making her only the third woman so placed. After four months on the run, Davis was apprehended. President Nixon congratulated the FBI on its “capture of the dangerous terrorist, Angela Davis.” Her case garnered international attention with the likes of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, writing a song in her defense. She was tried and acquitted on charges of aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder.

A resolution was passed in March of this year by the Alabama legislature to honor Davis for her significant contributions to social justice through her activism and scholarship.

Davis had not spoken at NAU previously but did remark she had passed through northern Arizona in the past.

Sol Serpas-Guardado, the ethnic studies ambassador coordinator, explained what the ambassador program was all about.

“The Ethnic Studies Ambassadors program is for ethnic studies minors who are interested in getting further involved with social awareness issues pertinent to ethnic studies. So, it’s not

just like they’re students and go to class, but they actually do things for the community and work with the program to bring important ethnic studies topics to the students and the community,” Serpas-Guardado said. “It’s about cultural understanding; we need to know how to deal with different cultures. I think the idea behind the ambassadors is just having that kind of inclusion, that dynamic.”

The ethnic studies program at NAU, which offers a minor in the field, was established in 2000. Mark Beeman, director of ethnic studies, noted the program did not begin conventionally.

“Ethnic studies was created by voluntary efforts . . . former students particularly from Black Student Union and MEChA [Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán] who at one point held a sit-in at the Provost’s office to help ethnic studies secure its first tenure track faculty,” Beeman said. Davis also expressed amazement that the issue of immigrants’ rights is so controversial.“No human being should ever be labeled illegal,” Davis said.

She went on to speak about international rights and justice.

After her presentation and some questions from the audience, Davis held a signing of her book The Meaning of Freedom. Even though she was on a tight schedule and at times showed evidence of weariness, Davis graciously signed and spoke with each person who came before her.

ear graduating students of Northern Arizona University, As your time at Northern Arizona University draws to a close, two ideas in particular rise to the forefront: You will never forget the experience you had here, and learning will be a lifetime quest.

NAU has been a place of discovery, and many of you were led to outcomes that you had not previously considered. Much of that discovery derived from interactions and experiences that occurred through your personal experiences with friends, new and old, and one-on-one interactions with faculty.

Being connected to NAU has allowed you to feel that you were a part of something bigger than yourself, and has expanded the worldview that you brought with you to college. This is a special community, of which you will forever be a part. There’s something special about a concentration of educated people, educational resources and willing learners, and I’m confident you are a changed person because of it.

Yet the journey of learning continues.

To succeed today, you must commit to being lifelong learners. You will shift jobs and careers, constantly pivoting to face new demands for expertise that keeps pace with rapidly changing technology.

The challenge is a daunting one though. You may very well end up in a job 10 years from now that does not exist today. We have done our best to prepare you for that

outcome, and all of us — faculty, staff, family, friends — are excited about your prospects.

Today, though, let us focus on your achievement.

I congratulate you, and I assure you that the entire NAU community exudes pride for all that you have accomplished. Take the time to thank those who have stood behind you and beside you, and to give yourself due credit for persevering.

Editorial&Opinion Obama’s drone wars make Americans the terrorists

A

fter eight years of George W. Bush, a period of time that saw our country engage in two undeclared, illegal and immoral wars, the rise of Barack Obama was hailed as a sign the U.S. had renounced its previous foreign policy of unmitigated aggression and unrepentant murder in the name of terrorism. When I voted for Obama in 2008, I was perhaps more pessimistic than many about his upcoming presidency, but I was still pretty sure the election represented a step forward from the Bush years in terms of ending our national obsession with continual warfare. Unfortunately, five years later, the world has come to understand that Obama is merely Bush 2.0. The proliferation of drone technology, along with Obama’s shadowy approach to targeted assassination, reveals him as a war criminal, as bad as if not worse than the administration he replaced.

MILES According to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, SCHNEIDERMAN there have been 368 indiscriminate drone strikes in Pakistan since 2004. Of these, 316 were ordered by the Obama administration. Up to 3,500 Pakistanis have been killed by drones during this period, including hundreds of civilians and at least 168 children. In Yemen, the Bureau reports 44–54 confirmed drone strikes since 2004, with 78–96 additional strikes unconfirmed. Civilian death estimates in Yemen range into the 400s, with possibly 12 children killed. Drone strikes in Somalia are still in the single digits, but Obama has another three and a half years to get those numbers up.

Even if the lowest estimates are correct, the U.S. killed 423 civilians and 180 children in Pakistan and Yemen since 2004. Those deaths are war crimes, and the people who ordered them and carried them out should be prosecuted for murder. That’s not counting other forms of covert action in these areas, which have reportedly killed hundreds more, nor those who have died in Iraq, Afghanistan and other undeclared battlefields since America went to war against a noun. A week before the tragic death of an 8-year-old boy in Boston, 12 children were killed in a U.S. airstrike in Afghanistan. The murder of an American child is cause for national mourning. In less fortunate countries, it has become horrifyingly routine.

For all we know, these numbers might be even higher, because the Obama administration has shrouded the drone program in secrecy, refusing to answer questions about the authority and justification for targeted assassination. On April 23, more than a decade after the program’s inception, the Senate finally held a public hearing on United States’ use of drones. Neither Obama nor any member of his administration made an appearance, nor have they offered any comment on the hearing.

We journalists know Obama has a secret “kill list” from which he personally chooses targets each month. We also know, thanks to WikiLeaks, Obama got permission from the Pakistani government to operate drones in their country by assassinating someone who was on their list, not ours. Most troubling of all (if, like Obama, you place more value on an American life than any other) is the use of drones to assassinate American citizens such as Anwar al-Awlaki and his son, 16-year-old Abdulrahman al-Awlaki. Due process, it seems, does not apply in the war on terror.

The American political left wanted to see George W. Bush and Dick Cheney tried and imprisoned for what they did, but Obama has made their wildest dreams a reality. He’s given himself the authority to kill whoever he wants, whenever he wants, wherever he wants, without telling anyone why.

The price of combating terror has been the transformation of America into a deadly terrorist machine that makes al-Qaeda look like Mr. Rogers. However history chooses to judge Barack Obama, his will be a legacy forever haunted by the specters of dead children.

CISPA: American privacy vs. corporate welfare

ver the past few years, it may have become apparent to you certain members of Congress are determined to deny you the small amount of privacy you still possess.

Currently, Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) has taken it upon himself to lead the charge in the matter of boosting cyber security.

He claims it will help protect corporations from cyber-attacks, which will help ensure American safety. With COLTON his reintroduction of DARGER The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, the bill has passed the House in a 288–127 vote, and is now in the Senate, where it is unclear when it will be voted on. Most importantly, this bill will allow corporations to give customers’ private information to federal agencies. While it is still uncertain how the bill will be voted on in the Senate, we can be sure particular Congress members will not give up on their attempts to pass other bills similar to CISPA. If Americans are determined to hold on to their current level of privacy, then they should be able to recognize CISPA is detrimental. By giving companies the ability to forward private information to government agencies, Congress is not protecting us from cy-

berterrorism, but effectively relinquishing our right to privacy. If the Senate approves CISPA, it should be clear to all Americans how Congress is not concerned with the protection of their constituents, but with the wellbeing of the corporate donors. Not only does this particular bill demonstrate the corruption of Washington, but Rogers has also accused opponents of the bill of being too naïve to understand why it’s necessary by stating they are comparable to 14-year-old bloggers.

While CISPA has received a great deal of attention on social networking sites, many Americans are still unaware of what it would actually do. If the bill is passed companies will be able to give customers’ private information to government agencies. While the intention of the bill is to protect corporations from potential cyberterrorism, it is more likely we will see no increase in cyber security, but, rather, a net loss of citizens’ privacy. The language of the bill leaves significant ambiguity regarding what information is viable for companies to share. In order for a company to voluntarily give up your privacy information to federal agencies, they must only believe it is necessary to bolster cyber security. Despite the vague language of the legislation, it has now managed to pass the House by a large margin. Clearly, Congress thinks protecting businesses is

more important than safeguarding your right to privacy.

According to a recent statement

by Rep. Rogers, the only people who are actually opposed to the bill are “14-year-old tweeters.” He then went on to suggest the reason people don’t support the bill is because they aren’t able to comprehend the mechanics of it. As The Huffington Post pointed out, companies such as Facebook and Microsoft, which are owned by some of the most intelligent entrepreneurs our nation has ever seen, don’t seem to fit his categorization of CISPA opponents. The Obama administration also stated CISPA in its current form will not be supported.

Apparently our nation is being run by an administration incapable of understanding the intricate mechanisms of CISPA that have been endorsed by the brilliant mind of Rogers. I encourage Michigan voters to put some actual consideration in their 2014 elections, and not make the rest of the country suffer from the stupidity of this man.

While many Americans seem to have forgotten the importance of retaliating against measures seeking to usurp our privacy, it is crucial members of the Senate not do the same. This bill is not what America needs to protect us from the dangers of cyberterrorism, and will be detrimental to our fundamental liberties.

Lumberjack seniors say goodbye to NAU

For graduating seniors — even the writers, photographers and editors of The Lumberjack — graduation is a time of goodbyes and looking toward the future. Our five graduating staff members have decided to share their experiences about NAU, The Lumberjack and what they will miss most about college.

Caitlyn Rogers Assistant Copy Editor hen I think of the most welcoming and rewarding environment I have experienced at NAU, I replay memories made with The Lumberjack staff. Joining the paper was definitely one of my greatest decisions. It has been truly astounding to see such a diverse group of people get along so well, create so cooperatively and have a hilarious rapport overall. These people are so unique and yet, surprisingly and miraculously cohesive. The Growing Pains theme song perfectly explains the atmosphere at The Lumberjack: “Baby, rain or shine, all the time; we got each other, sharin’ the laughter and love.”

Recently, I noticed a lot of NAU grads stay in Flagstaff; I guess they just felt too at home here to leave right away. It’s because of organizations like The Lumberjack that I completely identify with those individuals. Well, some of those individuals.

Caitlyn will return to NAU in the fall to earn her master of arts in applied communication.

Sean Ryan Photo Editor have studied at four different universities and colleges now and I am finally finishing my journey of being a wandering student. It has been one of the greatest adventures of my life. I had the opportunity to live in a foreign country and photograph in countless others along with photographing for The Arizona Republic and Flint Journal in Michigan.

The greatest advice I have gathered is nothing I have been a part of in college is as serious and important as people say.

Nothing comes to a screeching halt because you forgot to photograph an assignment or you made a mistake.

The last part is that you should fail at something while in college. On purpose or accident — fail something. It will be good for you. Without a stack of rejection letters or failing my chemistry class as a freshman, I wouldn’t be where I am at or who I am. Don’t be afraid to fail: start small if you need to, ask out the girl in your English class — take time to live your life everyone once and awhile.

He initially sparked my interest in sports writing and convinced me I was a good writer, which boosted my confidence enough to start writing for The Lumberjack. I enjoyed much of my time in the newsroom and found other times to be challenging. However, these challenges exemplified what it is like to work with a diverse and strong-willed group of people. For that, I thank everyone I had the pleasure of working with at this publication and wish nothing but the best for everyone that shaped my time here.

This fall, Dani will be attending the University of Oregon to study law.

College was hard.

Mykel Vernon-Sembach A&E Editor any ask me if I’m excited to graduate but, truthfully speaking, it’s a bittersweet pill to swallow. Although simultaneously juggling studying full time, working at New Frontiers and taking part in The Lumberjack on “Endless Edit Tuesdays” might have been the bane of my existence through the semester, I couldn’t imagine my college experience without the struggles and accomplishments made here at The Lumberjack student newspaper.

The staff at The Lumberjack is a rare — but thriving — breed of young, dedicated reporters whom I have known to sacrifice their time and energy to bring the latest news to NAU campus and the Flagstaff community. Yet, it’s never a dull moment in the newsroom and while we are all driven to give our best, we are a tight-knit group who can’t help but to have fun.

The Student Media Center has become my “home away from home” and it makes me sad to think that I have to leave, but that’s the beauty of it: they are always open and willing to include newcomers and veterans alike into their staff. Even as a journalist, I found memorable lessons and moments from those who I have met and befriended through NAU’s student-run radio station, KJACK, and NAZ Today’s broadcast staff.

Despite leaving with a heavy heart, I can’t wait to see who steps up to the plate.

I want to thank The Lumberjack staff and our wonderful advisor, Rory Faust, for a fantastic two semesters: thanks for taking a chance on an amateur music reviewer. Without you, I don’t know where I’d be.

Editorial&Opinion Faith healing leads to the neglect of children

here has always been a struggle between religious communities and scientific communities; one example of this struggle is the practice of faith healing. Faith healing is the belief one can be physically healed through spiritual means. Faith healing is not a common practice because it forbids the use of any modern-day medical treatments. However, there are people who truly believe the healing of a person can be obtained through prayer. While it is all well and good for adults to choose to follow such a path, for children who have no say in the matter and rely on their parent’s decisions, it should not be tolerated.

In Philadelphia, a couple who have alNATASHA ready been on a 10-year probation for the REEVES 2009 death of their toddler after they turned to prayer instead of a doctor broke their probation by refusing medical care for their second child. As a result, the infant boy is dead. Herbert and Catherine Schaible belong to a fundamentalist Christian church called The First Century Gospel Church that believes in faith healing. As a result of lacking proper medical care, their 8-month-old son died this past week after he suffered from diarrhea and breathing problems for at least a week straight. Due to the sickness, he had even stopped eating. According to authorities, the child’s illnesses could have been treated with simple overthe-counter medicine. Regardless of a person’s belief, there is no excuse for the neglect the Schaible children faced.

No charges have been filed for the death of the child, and none will be made until the result from the autopsy comes back. The couple has been found guilty for the breaking the terms of their probation, which were to seek medical help and follow the doctor’s directions if their children ever show signs of illness. Freedom of religion is a constitutional right in this country — however there are boundaries when it comes to the welfare of human beings. An adult could choose to neglect their own health, but it is irresponsible and cruel to deny treatment to a child no matter what your belief is. The child has their own right to life. In America one can’t go around sacrificing human lives in the name of their belief, including letting a child agonize through a sickness and letting the end result be death. This couple may truly believe that their prayers were going to save their children but they should have had the realization that the only way to cure a biological illness is through a physical, biological and medical means.

What was unacceptable to begin with is the parents were put on probation instead of having their second child and their other six children taken away from them after the death of the first toddler. Probation was a sentence that is too relaxed and unstable. The sentence should have been in the best interest of the child, which is to remove the baby and take him to a safer place. This couple must be found guilty. They neglected their children, put them in a dangerous and obviously unhealthy situation, and they are accountable for involuntary manslaughter.

The man who dares to defy Putin and the reasons he is bound to win

oviet Russia is re-emerging and Vladimir Putin is making no secret of it. Since his reelection in 2011, Putin has been on a rampage, routing his political enemies with the full weight of the justice system. One man, however, has not bowed down to this intimidation. Alexei Navalny, a lawyer, activist and the most public opponent of Putin in Russia, has made it his goal as a politician and blogger to fight the systemic corruption that still envelops the Russian government. However, on April 25, he went on trial for charges brought against him by the Investigative Committee, essentially the Russian FBI, who have long been known to be lackeys of Putin.

The charges themselves are irrelevant (although it has been claimed that he embezzled JAMES GINGERICH half a million dollars from a state-owned company). What is pertinent is that every independent investigation into the charges, including by the local government in Kirov where Navalny acted as a political advisor, have shown that the accusations are entirely fraudulent. Navalny has used his position as an advisor to buy stock in state-owned companies and use his insider position to learn of their misdeeds, which he voices in his blog. The owner of the company he purportedly pilfered money from was a recent target of these investigations. Oh, and he is also the head of the Investigative Committee, a slight conflict of interest, wouldn’t you say?

However boundless Putin’s power may seem, this trial may very well be the catalyst for his downfall. At first glance it may seem that his ability to bring a man as influential as Navalny to trial for fabricated charges is a reflection of the hold he retains on Russia’s poisoned institutions. Yet in reality, it is a flailing and desperate attempt by Putin. He likes to believe he can prosecute his problems away, and while that may have been true in the past, it is not true here. Navalny’s supporters are not the angst-filled youths who protested the imprisonment of the band Pussy Riot this past

year — they are the Russian middle class. While it is true the more prominent members of society are more apt to be bullied by a government that can strip them of all their worldly possessions, they are also the last group of people you want to anger. It is one thing to incarcerate a multitude of nonconformists easily pegged by Putin as radicals; it is quite another to begin rounding up the neighbors and family members of the citizens who lend legitimacy to your administration.

Among the myriad numbers of dissenters that have been imprisoned by Putin, Navalny represents the greatest threat to his regime. He is young and popular, and, according to the international advocacy group Human Rights Watch, is the only man that could reasonably challenge Putin in an election. If he were to be charged with these fictitious crimes, such a conviction would preclude him from running for office, which is clearly Putin’s objective. Navalny is also an ardent nationalist, making it difficult for Putin to levy his usual accusations that the dissident is a foreign agent aimed at debasing the motherland. Meanwhile, the prosecutors in this case have made no attempts to conceal that the true reasons behind Navalny’s arrest lie in his attempts to expose wrongdoing in the bureaucracy.

When asked why Navalny’s indictment was so sudden and why the case was brought to trial so suddenly, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee commented, “If a person tries with all his might to draw attention to himself, even, you might say, tries to taunt the authorities — well, then the interest in his past grows, and the process of exposing him naturally speeds up.”

I wish Godspeed to Mr. Navalny. Men of his stature in his circumstance rarely act so bravely. Just look at our own government, where the threat of imprisonment does not exist and still so few stand up to venality and graft. The Russian bear is upon him and it seems soon the world may have one less freedom fighter its midst, but if there is but one man who can wrangle this deceitful beast, Alexei Navalny is he.

Project GIVE participants take part in 30 Hour Famine

t is a custom to eat three meals a day in the U.S. There are grocery stores every few miles, multiple types of food can be delivered directly to homes and fast-food restaurants can supply an entire meal to a customer in five minutes. In other countries, however, food is not as easily accessible. According to World Vision, 925 million people go hungry every day. One way to combat this problem is through programs such as the 30 Hour Famine, which NAU’s Project GIVE took part in on April 26 and 27.

The 30 Hour Famine is a program organized through World Vision that helps to raise awareness and money for children and families who are going without food. Participants raise money to fund whatever region their group chooses to support, and then they go 30 hours without food in order to experience what it is like to be in a less fortunate situation. During the fast, participants play games, learn about World Vision and what their money is going to and do community service projects, all while being hungrier than most of them have ever been.

The 30 Hour Famine at NAU was headed by Project GIVE coordinator Elisabeth Sims, who has been participating in 30 Hour Famines over the past 20 years.

Project GIVE to do things on occasion that have a global focus,” Sims said.

Many of the fasters in Project GIVE experienced going 30 hours without food for the first time. Some of the fears a few participants had included being more irritable than usual and struggling to keep a positive mind, but there was also excitement because they knew they were going to learn more about others’ issues while attempting to make a difference.

“I always thought it was interesting how our country has the most access to the highest quality and quantity food in the world and other people, other countries and nations have to do just as much physical labor and still run their lives like we do but on a lower diet,” said William Kleinpeter, a junior biology major. “I’ve never done that long of a time without eating, so I thought it would be interesting to see how it is.”

Allison Bulkeley, a junior psychology major and Project GIVE’s program assistant, participated in the famine not only because she is part of Project GIVE, but because she believes people need to be more aware about what others in the world struggle with daily.

“I think it is a good thing to spread awareness. People don’t really realize how hard it is for people to go without food, and a lot of the world is going without food every day, so it’s just a good thing to be mindful about,” Bulkeley said.

The fast started at 6 a.m. on April 26 and went until noon on April 27. During the first day, the fasters learned about why they were doing the 30 Hour Famine. They read about different regions in Africa, watched educational videos and played games that involved opening their eyes to what others go through. For

one activity, they each received a card about a child in a region of Africa who has a disability — such as not having the use of their hands from being burnt — and the participants then had to do the following activities with the disability of their child to show children who have disabilities and lack nutrition still have to work every day.

During the second day, the participants met at 8 a.m. and headed off to do service projects in the Flagstaff community.

They helped out at NAU’s SNAIL and SSLUG gardens, the Rio de Flag clean-up project and worked with Friends of Flagstaff ’s Future. Doing community service projects during the last four hours of their fast was a challenge for the 30 Hour Famine participants.

“There were many times when I just thought, ‘Wow, people have to do hard labor, like going miles for water, every day and they are going off little or no food; if they can do it, I can certainly do it.’ It also made me realize all the privileges we have here in America,” Bulkeley said.

World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine is an eye-opening experience for many of the people who participate in it. According to World Vision, an estimated 7,000 children under age five die due to hunger-related causes every day. Every 30 dollars a participant raises can feed a child for a month so every dollar raised by 30 Hour Famine participants matters.

“Humans can do so much, even without food for 30 hours,” Kleinpeter said. “There is no reason, then, that we can’t do so much more while having food at all times.”

Pi Kappa Phi fraternity raises money for charity

guy in a hoodie laughs, and like a domino falling, the rest of the guys start laughing as well. Two of them are on exercise bikes pedaling, while one plays his Nintendo DS and the other is flicking around on his iPhone. It is Friday and cloudy, like rain could be coming. Wind pushes the two signs attached to the bikes making a crinkling sound. The blue sign has “Pedals for Push” written on it in big neon letters and the other details the raffle prizes. One guy in a suit excitedly tells some of the people just coming back from lunch, “We’re getting interviewed. We’re getting press!”

These are members of the fraternity Pi Kappa Phi and they hosted an event called Pedals for Push, which went on for 36 hours on April 25 and 26. Pedals for Push is a fundraiser for Push America, an organization for the people with disabilities. All day, the men were pedaling and raising money for the charity, all the while running a raffle with tickets selling for a dollar.

“We’re spreading awareness for Push America,” said Brandon Garcia, a freshman chemistry major.

According to their official website, Push America has raised approximately $15 million to date for people with disabilities and correlating organizations. The organization works through grants and by helping raise money, the fraternities will get a portion of the money to fund building a wheelchair ramp in their community. More than 1,500 men participate in their events, including those from Pi Kappa Phi on the NAU campus. Their main goal is to change how those in the country who have disabilities are viewed and intend to do that through active events

like Pedals for Push.

“It’s our philanthropy associated with our fraternity, and it serves people with disabilities,” said Will Livingston, a sophomore political science major. “We are doing this fundraiser where we pedal for people who aren’t able to and donate the money.”

Push America, the main organization, has several different events that they put on nationwide. The event NAU’s chapter took part in is called Journey of Hope, or, as it’s called at NAU, Pedals for Push. This event started in 1987 and has been going since then all around the nation. It begins in San Francisco, going from there to cover about 32 states, with all those supplying events putting in about 75 miles per day. As a nationwide event, the money raised comes from pledges and raffles, much like the one on NAU’s campus. Some of the prizes included Bookmans gift cards, movie tickets and gift certificates for restaurants. Donations could also go in different buckets for fraternities and sororities for a little competition to see who could raise more money. This will all go toward Journey of Hope and creating more options for people who are not able to easily engage in rigorous physical activity.

“The organization, Push America, does this charity bike ride that all Phi Kappa chapters get involved in,” said Robert Williams, a junior German major. According to Williams, the bike ride operates much like the Susan G. Komen breast cancer walk.

All over the nation, people are donating money to the cause and then performing a physical activity, such as walking or, in Pedals for Push’s case, biking, to show their support.

The fraternity was very excited to do the event. As a fundraiser, it plays to their strengths as a group. Switching through the day and keeping up morale with jokes and laughter, the fraternity kept going through gruesome pedaling hours.

Graduation brings long lines and hungry bellies

itting through a commencement ceremony cannot only bring boredom, but hunger as well. After the ceremony, many graduates and their families flock to nearby restaurants for a celebratory feast.

The commotion of the ceremony will move downtown with congested traffic filling San Francisco Street, Milton Road and Pine Knoll Drive. There was also an expectancy of more traffic due to the closure of Beaver Street, but the railroad decided to postpone the maintenance.

Restaurants are also expecting busy times during the graduation weekend starting on May 10 and ending on May 12.

“We are completely booked,” said Nicos Redollar, Taverna manager. Taverna, located on south Woodlands Village Boulevard, offers a traditional Greek flare to family dining with singing and flame spitting servers.

Along with entertainment, the proximity to campus makes it a hot place for families to make reservations in advanced.

“We’ve been getting calls since the start of last year,” Redollar said.

Due to many reservations for graduation parties, Taverna is also considering having a special for the graduation festivities.

“Once it comes closer to the event we will know whether or not we are going to have a graduation special,” Redollar said.

Another booked restaurant is 1899 Bar and Grill, which is

on campus across from the Drury Inn. “We can still take parties of six or less, but everything else is booked,” said assistant manager Hannah Stewart.

The restaurant intends to have celebratory champagne drinks and entrees geared toward graduation planned for the event. Menu changes will be announced closer to the date.

Stewart said families hoping to avoid the commencement rush should consider dining during one of the three ceremonies.

“Take a look at the graduation schedule; it’s sporadic, so come in whenever there is a ceremony going on,” Stewart said.

Many restaurants are booked during this busy time, but there is hope at Beaver Street Brewery. This popular restaurant located two blocks south of the tracks on Beaver Street doesn’t take reservations, but instead goes off of a first come, first serve basis. This gives wiggle room for the students who haven’t given much thought as to where they would like to eat.

“I don’t have any plans, but it would be nice to go to Beaver Street since that was where we went when my parents came to visit,” said Hannah Adelmann, a senior accounting major who will be graduating.

Restaurant staff stated lines are usually out the door at 10:30 a.m., so customers may have to wait for an hour or more to get a table.

Across the way are two other popular eating destinations, Macy’s and La Bellevia. Both hold the same motto as Beaver

Street Brewery and have much smaller dining areas.

If waiting in line isn’t the graduate’s idea of celebration, Hops on Birch located on Birch Street, a block from Heritage Square, has other options.

“We can reserve parts of the bar if the party opens a $200 tab,” said Thomas Smith, owner of Hops on Birch.

Families and friends can also bring food with them, but it has to be from commercial stores with no homemade items.

Hops provides a more relaxed atmosphere and allows dogs.

For students who are out and about that night, Hops offers $3.50 beers.

“There’s always a good selection and we’re cheaper than anywhere else in town,” Smith said.

With close to 200 restaurants, Flagstaff is a great place to feed families following the ceremony. Students are considering numerous options to avoid long waits.

“There’s no place better than Scott’s with the best wings in town and five dollar pitchers of beer,” said Eli Crevelone, a graduating business marketing major.

Crevelone took notes from the December graduation, finding many people forget about Scott’s Chicago Pizza located a block away from Wheeler Park. “ I feel like people forget about it. The reservation restaurants would be like Taverna, Beaver Street Brewery, Lumberyard . . . those kinds of places. Scott’s just gets kind of lost in there.”

It is a tradition at many colleges to host what is known as an Undie Run. It gives students the opportunity to donate their clothes and strip down to their underwear in front of other classmates and peers. At 9 p.m. on April 26, plenty of students gathered at the NAU Wall Aquatic Center â&#x20AC;&#x201D; fully clothed. They then proceeded to peel off the layers they wanted to donate to St. Vincent De Paul. Next came the run: a two-mile course through the campus. The 2013 NAU Undie Run was definitely a hit, despite the chilly weather and little amount of clothing worn during it. Whether students were passionate about supporting St. Vincent De Paul or they just wanted to run around almost naked with friends, everyone seemed to be having a good time. Through the night, there was music and free prizes. This event was sponsored by ASNAU and the Green Fund, and they put on a great event with fun for all.

John McCoy is the NAU Concerto winner

ometimes I try to wrap my head around my life, what I have done so far — if I have done anything at all — and at what point I am now. I am in awe of how rapidly life goes by and especially this semester. All of my previous semesters have rushed before me, but none of them have been as hectic as this one; it has been more like a holiday than anything else. At least it is easy to say that at the end of it, because the good memories are the ones that will stay with me. Late nights with homework and pulling my hair out because of confusing grammar will not exist in my memory as much from now on.

Not only is my exchange semester over, but also my time as a college student. I am graduating and taking a big leap into real life, but it seems like a blur to me. I mentioned in my first column I am unsure of what to do with my degree. Well, that status is still intact if I am not to focus on writing. Not surprisingly, this uncertainty adds a bit of frustration and anxiety to me.

I cannot tell you what graduation in Sweden will be like, but what I do know is that while Americans can buy their own cap and gown, Swedes get to borrow a shawl; it cannot get more low-key than that. My graduation back home is not until June 5. My flight back home is scheduled on that same date. Has anyone else ever graduated from 30,000 feet? Well, now you may understand how concerned I am to show up. You know, to me, it is not necessary to say a last goodbye to the ones in my classes that I am intentionally never going to see again. Neither am I too keen about gathering friends and families for a celebration when I still do not know what to do with this degree. I would rather hold the celebration until after I get that figured out.

My parents and brother are flying

out to America, however, and to me, that is the most valuable graduation gift I could ever imagine. I still expect, though, a present from my other brother who is not joining us.

Until they show up, I am putting in my last effort with studies for the notorious finals week. Because I am used to only having one class at a time for about 5 weeks, it is now a challenge to pass finals week with four classes. Studying so much will definitely be a test of my selfdiscipline. Not to brag, but I have never failed an exam and it would therefore be such a failure to do so now. However, a reason why I have never failed one before may be that I had very few of them back in Sweden.

While trying to keep my head in the books this week, I am also trying to hang out with all the beautiful people I have gotten to know during my stay here in America. Even though NAU was my sixth choice to study abroad, I am so thankful this is where I ended up. I have met the most diverse group of people with all kinds of quirky personalities. It is hard to sum up four months of happenings but it has been more awesome than I could imagine. Travels, delicious lunches at the Hot Spot, nights out, thrift shopping, laughter, blaming everything on the altitude, writing for The Lumberjack; everything will stay with me forever. It will be heartbreaking to leave all this, but I am already planning for a reunion in the future.

For all of you that are going abroad or on an exchange in the future, I am very jealous and I wish you all the best.

You will not be disappointed, even if you do not get your first choice. For the ones who decide not to go, rethink that decision. As for me, I am jumping into the fog to see wherever that will take me.

Dearest Flagstaff, you are going to miss me.

enior musical education and sax performance major John McCoy was first introduced to the saxophone in the third grade through a school program designed to introduce music to kids.

“I just remember seeing all these instruments,” McCoy said. “I saw this gold thing that looked pretty cool so I was like, ‘I want to play that.’”

Since then, the “gold thing” has gone on to become a major factor in McCoy’s life; he played the saxophone all through middle school and high school. McCoy has played the alto, tenor and soprano sax, and he currently holds the top spot for alto saxes in the NAU wind symphony.

The past few years at NAU have greatly expanded McCoy’s horizons and ability to reach new heights and possibilities. The most recent and greatest accomplishment he has achieved so far was winning this year’s NAU Concerto Competition. A concerto is a musical composition broken into three parts or movements; a solo instrument — like the saxophone — is accompanied by an orchestra, or a piano in McCoy’s case. McCoy also had to memorize the piece as opposed to using sheet music.

“I was nervous up until two weeks before the preliminary round,” McCoy said. “All of a sudden, I just decided there is no reason I should be nervous; I’m just doing this because I want to, because it is what I love to do.”

The Concerto McCoy performed was Concertino da Camera by Jacques Ibert, a French piece from 1935, which McCoy describes as a staple of the classical saxophone. The competition had 16 other contestants involved with a preliminary round and a final round. The final round was held in Ardrey Auditorium.

“It’s just piano and saxophone in this huge auditorium, so it was interesting getting used to the acoustics,” McCoy said. “Eventually, it just came down to, ‘I’m just going to play.’ I didn’t even wait for the results; I went to go get some dinner with some friends.”

After returning from dinner, McCoy was informed he and Carolyn Snyder, a violist, had won the competition.

For McCoy, the real enjoyment comes from the saxophone itself.

“It is such an expressive instrument, in

terms of tone color and just raw emotion behind it,” McCoy said. “You can easily convey what you are feeling inside of you when you are playing a concerto, or any piece for that matter. I think it is the instrument that sounds most like the human voice. It is an instrument you can play in any genre; there are people who play it in metal bands. The cool thing is it all kind of stemmed from classical music.”

While McCoy started his career in jazz, he has since made the switch to classical as his preferred field. This is partially due to the communication he has had with NAU alumni and famous sax player Dannel Espinoza, who convinced him to look into classical.

After NAU, McCoy plans to attend graduate school at Florida State University. From there, he wishes to someday teach the saxophone while continuing to perform. McCoy’s summer is going to involve studying with the Rascher Saxophone Quartet in Germany and studying with the Mana Sax Quartet, which Espinoza is a member of, in Phoenix and Maryland.

All this studying through quartets and NAU’s unique music education program can be a heavy weight at times for McCoy. It can also get lonely.

“You are spending a lot of time practicing, honing your craft, listening to music,” McCoy said. “It’s kind of a little life-consuming, but at the same time, it’s rewarding. I have been performing in so many concerts this past year. I think I was learning 12 pieces this year. Typically, you only learn four or five.”

Before graduating this semester, McCoy will be performing his winning concerto — Snyder will be as well — with a full orchestra. It will be on May 5 at 3 p.m. in Ardrey Auditorium. The NAU Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra will also be performing. As he approaches the stage one last time as an NAU student, McCoy will play his highest attending performance as a solo. For him, the real joy will be representing the school that has helped him blossom into what hopefully will be a celebrated saxophonist.

“I personally enjoy it because I think NAU is a very top quality school, especially for music,” McCoy said. “The biggest thing is just making everybody proud at that point, no matter what we do and no matter what we’re playing, just making sure that you are representing NAU at all times.”

Talented freshman keeps humility during collegiate career

he sky hung heavy with gray.

The remnants of the previous night’s surprise snow shower pooled into puddles on the NAU outdoor track, the grass still slick with unexpected precipitation.

Despite the field’s soggy conditions, the NAU women’s distance squads had just finished their morning workout and were cooling down in the locker room. It is 10 a.m., and while other students were settling into their first class or even rolling out of bed, these runners were already finished with an intense morning on the track.

Among the team is NAU freshman distance runner Rolonda Jumbo. Originally from Chinle High School in Chinle, Ariz., Jumbo ran many of her races in Flagstaff ’s Buffalo Park. During her high-school running career, Jumbo racked up quite a list of accomplishments, including four-time state champion in cross country, winning six individual track state titles, leading her team to three Arizona 3A and Division 3 state titles and competing in the USA National Cross Country Championships four times.

It was clear when Jumbo walked out of the locker room none of that had gone to her head. The young runner was soft-spoken and possessed a surprisingly shy demeanor for someone in the track spotlight so often.

Jumbo was right, though — it was cold. The conversation continued inside of the Health and Recreation Center, where on a staircase, Jumbo made herself comfortable.

NAU wasn’t the only school to offer Jumbo a place on their team.

There were other schools she considered, such as Lipscomb University in Nashville and the University of Colorado-Boulder. While some of the reasons Jumbo chose NAU were because of Flagstaff ’s beauty and the running program, the biggest reason was because her high school coach

and role model, Shaun Martin, attended NAU. Like Jumbo, Martin attended NAU on scholarship. Although injuries hampered Martin’s running, he graduated in 2004 with a degree in health promotions for education and went on to have an impact on both Chinle High School and Jumbo.

“He was a huge influence on my running,” Jumbo said. “He helped me get to the next level in high school and took care of his athletes.”

Jumbo has faced such obstacles as increased mileage, more intense workouts and getting used to a new team, but she is settling in just fine.

“Rolonda is a workhorse,” said graduate assistant coach Leah Rosenfeld. “She works really hard and helps the team in practice; she’s been great to have here.”

Sophomore distance runner and teammate Kylee Kieser, who competed against Jumbo in high school as a runner for Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe, Ariz., also spoke highly of Jumbo’s role on the team and work ethic.

“Rolonda is a great competitor on and off the track. She’s really friendly,” Kieser said. “She has the drive to keep going and she knows when she’s in it, she’s in it for the long run.”

In fall 2012, Jumbo placed 10th in October’s Big Sky Championships with a time of 17:46.4 and 62nd in November’s Mountain Region Championships with a time of 22:10.6. So far in spring 2013, Jumbo is ranked 11th in Big Sky for the mile run with a time of 4:57.28, 14th in the 3000-meter dash with a time of 9:54.30, and 11th in the steeplechase with a time of 11:10.49.

Jumbo has noticed the transition into the team, as a runner and the classroom as a criminal justice major, becoming easier as her freshman year progressed.

“Everything seems to be falling into place now,” Jumbo said. “It was hard at first being away from home.”

Home is a huge part of Jumbo’s life and is where she shakes off the stress of running by riding her horses and working on the family ranch.

“Ranching is pretty much my other life,” Jumbo said.

Rosenfeld thought Jumbo’s life at home and her work on the ranch was a key part of her solid work ethic.

“The foundations that her family gave her and the way she grew up made her competitive,” Rosenfeld said. “When she goes home she works on the farm. She’s very hands-on and that’s made her a hard worker.”

Considering Jumbo had a list of chores that included getting water for the animals with multiple hoses, shoveling cow and horse manure and

hefting wheelbarrows 800 meters down dirt roads and back, it makes sense ranching contributed both to her character and prepared her for the physical test of cross country.

“I think ranching really helped my endurance, because I had a lot of chores. I had to get them done no matter what,” Jumbo said.

However, there was a time when Jumbo’s second life clashed with running.

She enjoyed participating in a particular rodeo event called barrel racing, which involved riding around barrels in a sort of clover pattern with the object being to get the fastest time. While she took spills off of her horse, one fall in particular hurt her badly enough to cause con-

cern about her cross country future.

“I got hurt pretty bad. My family didn’t want me to lose my chance at a scholarship,” Jumbo said.

Faced with a worried family and the possibility of being hurt worse and jeopardizing her promising future as a track star, Jumbo gave up barrel racing.

Jumbo ended up getting the sought-after scholarship and her future as a track star is looking bright as ever; but despite it all, she still remains humble and doesn’t underestimate the level of competition in college running.

“It’s a whole new ballgame,” Jumbo said. “I’m going to have to work four times harder than I did in high school.”

Paraclete baseball players continue bond at NAU

t is no surprise a team plays well together when they gel together. This chemistry takes time to build, but for the NAU club baseball team’s Sean Bozigian, Jordan Calka, Brandon Dorsey, Connor Rodrigo and Nick Stevens, this cohesion started long before their playing time on the NAU team.

Growing up in Lancaster, Calif., Bozigian, Calka, Dorsey, Rodrigo and Stevens all had a passion for baseball. They attended Paraclete High School and played on the baseball team together. The bonds and friendships they had in high school carried over to college, according to Rodrigo.

“We were all close friends growing up and we all live within two miles of each other,” Rodrigo said. “We all hung out in high school and it’s carried into college on a different level.”

The fact all five players from California ended up in Arizona is no coincidence. Bozigian and Stevens were the first two to attend NAU, and are now both sophomores majoring in business. Bozigian served as an unofficial recruiter and advocate for the team, and convinced freshmen Calka, Dorsey and Rodrigo to continue their careers in Flagstaff. Calka is a hotel and restaurant management major, Dorsey is majoring in business management and Rodrigo is majoring in physical education with a minor in disability studies.

“I never even knew about NAU before Sean, and after he did [tell me about NAU], I loved it out here and playing baseball is just another advantage of it,” Calka said.

“Sean got me to play, but I’m going to play here also because I love the sport,” Dorsey said.

“I came up here because of Sean and Nick,” Rodrigo added. “They told me how fun it was up here with the baseball atmosphere and everything. I came up here and really liked it.”

For these men, picking up on each other’s habits and tendencies was second nature, and came especially easy for Bozigian.

“I played with Connor and Nick for a long time, but with Jordan being catcher, I’m one step ahead of him,” Bozigian said. “I know when he likes to throw down, when he likes to do different stuff, I feel like that really gives us an advantage.”

Calka thinks there is a special advantage playing with guys from his high school. Stevens agrees having played on a high school team before gives them the upper hand.

“I think there is [an advantage], especially on the field,” Calka said. “We already know what it’s like to play on the field together, so we lead by example. Having brothers next to you is a good thing.”

“I think playing in high school helps a lot in the outfield,” Stevens said. “Brandon, Connor and I all play outfield and playing [here] before has helped with communicating.”

Putting this into perspective—the chemistry on the team progressed quicker and earlier in the season because of the foundation set by the Paraclete boys. Rodrigo, however, does think the whole team plays well together.

“Our team just has natural chemistry; it’s a great group of guys. Everyone’s really fun, but it was definitely nice coming in here already knowing each other,” Rodrigo said.

This transition from high school to college was not an easy one for any of the five. It took time, but the principles and the passions behind the game remain the same.

“We have different responsibilities everywhere,” Bozigian said. “It’s a whole different ball game, no pun intended.”

he NAU women’s tennis team’s successful season came to an end after the University of Montana (UM) Grizzlies defeated the Lumberjacks 4–2 in the semifinals of the Big Sky Conference (BSC) tournament in Sacramento, Calif.

“It should have been a final; the level of tennis was extraordinary,” said director of tennis Kim Bruno.

The third-seeded Lumberjacks won their 13th-straight doubles point, taking an early 1-0 lead in the semifinal match against the second seed Grizzlies on April 27.

Seniors Ghizelene Doballah and Nicole Perez defeated sophomore Sasha Carter and junior Maddy Murray 8–3 at the No. 2 doubles spot. Seniors Malia Wahinepio and Alice Pacaut clinched the doubles point for the Lumberjacks after defeating sophomores Haley Driver and Precious Gbadamosi 9–7 at the No. 3 doubles spot. Pacaut and Wahinepio won 18 out of their past 19 doubles matches.

“What has made us have good matches is our intensity. We were all cheering for each other and it really helped us to play much better as a team,” Pacaut said.

Four of the six singles matches went into three sets. Doballah got the only singles win for the Lumberjacks after she defeated sophomore Laurence Pelchat 3–6, 6–1, 6–1. Gbadamosi clinched the match for the Grizzlies after she defeated Pacaut 6–3, 2–6, 6–2.

“We all competed our hearts out; we all did as good as we could. We all left it out there,” Perez said. “Bummed that we lost, but it was still a great match.”

This is the second consecutive year UM has eliminated NAU in the BSC tournament. UM would go on to lose to Sacramento State in the finals. “[They] really had to beat us to get rid of us,” Bruno said. “At the end of the day, we’re not happy we don’t have the championship, but we did everything we could do.”

The Lumberjacks defeated the sixth seeded Montana State University Bobcats 4–1 in the quarterfinals on April 26, clinching the doubles point and taking the early lead in the match.

Doballah and Perez defeated sophomore Liana Bates and freshman Iva Parapunova 8–5 at the No. 2 doubles spot.

Pacaut and Wahinepio clinched the doubles point for the Lumberjacks after they defeated juniors Ellie Crum and Wena Tsan at the No. 3 doubles spot.

Pacaut and Perez both won their singles matches in straight sets. Doballah clinched the match for the Lumberjacks after she defeated Parapunova 6–1, 6–4.

Perez finished her senior season with 19 singles victories this season, tying the school record for the most by a singles player in a season.

“This year was probably one of my best years of tennis at NAU,” Perez said. “I’m sad it is over, but it’s great we are in the record books. Every single one of us definitely deserves our names in that book.”

Pacaut and Wahinepio set a new school record for the most doubles wins in a season with 20.

The Lumberjacks finished their season 17–10 overall and tied for the second-most season wins in NAU history with the 2002 team. This is the eighth consecutive season the team has had double digit wins and set a new school record. They also recorded 55 doubles wins, and the second-most team singles wins in program history with 93.

“We had an outstanding season. The girls grew as tennis players, grew as people and I am going to definitely miss this bunch next year,” Bruno said.

“We had a great ride; it was a lot of fun, a lot of great memories and a lot of good tennis too.”

NAU DEFENSE TOPS OFFENSE IN ANNUAL SPRING GAME

he defense for the NAU football squad closed out an impressive spring season with a 44–34 victory over the offense in the Blue-Gold, Defense versus Offense, spring game on April 27 at Lumberjack Stadium.

“Looking at the tape, there’s always a few things we can improve on, technique and scheme wise, but overall we did a great job of playing hard and our effort was good,” said defensive coordinator Andy Thompson. “Overall, we have 18 seniors on defense and I’m excited about that whole group; we have a lot of guys that have been solid, did a good job, so it was a great day.”

This year, the Lumberjacks implemented a scoring system for the defense: seven points for a turnover, three points for a three-and-out and missed field goal, and two points for

every sack, tackle for loss and fourth-down stop. Quarterbacks were protected during the game and were “tackled or sacked” if their forward motion was stopped or if it looked like they were about to get hit.

The offensive gold came out firing on its first drive, marching down the field, ending in a touchdown from sophomore quarterback Kyren Poe to sophomore fullback Nick Butier. The defensive blue went down 12–2 before stringing along some impressive possessions of its own.

“I just liked how we all knew our job and assignments, but we really need to improve on our technique and how we play certain situations, understanding down-and-distance, but other than that we did a pretty good job today,” said senior defensive back Lucky Dozier, who finished with three tackles.

On the third drive of the day, on third-and-7, senior line-

backer Anthony Harrington intercepted a pass from sophomore quarterback Jordan Perry. On the ensuing drive, the defense forced a three-and-out after Perry was sacked by senior defensive lineman Steven Garcia.

“It all starts up front with us, the [defensive] line, and the linebackers play coverage, and we all play a huge role and we all kind of come together and get those stops,” said junior defensive lineman Junior Vicente, who had 1.5 sacks and one tackle for loss.

In the end, the defense racked up 5.5 sacks and 63 total tackles, 11 for a loss. Garcia led the team with two sacks, and sophomore cornerback Marcus Alford and senior defensive lineman Chima Ike both led the team with six tackles.

“Our tackling was better than it has been because we haven’t had many opportunities with that, but I was happy with the way some of the kids played,” Thompson said.

Offense marred by injuries in spring showcase

njuries handicapped the offensive gold team of NAU in the annual spring game, leading to a win for the defensive blue team win at Lumberjack Stadium on April 27.

The spring game served as the final chance to practice at game speed, but many key offensive players did not play, including starting senior running back Zach Bauman. The defensive blue team ended up beating the offensive gold by 44-34, holding the offense to only one touchdown.

Despite the loss, offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello thought the offense played well.

“It was good; there were plays made on both sides of the ball, but I thought the culmination of spring today, they were pretty efficient. Some guys showed up on film and made plays and I was pleased with how [quarterback Kyren] played today,” Scangarello said.

The NAU offense got off to a tremendous start, driving the ball down the field for a touchdown on its opening drive.

Sophomore quarterback Kyren Poe was under center for a majority of the snaps, and finished the day going 16-of-25 for 153 yards with the day’s lone touchdown pass.

“It was important for the offense to see him go out there and manage the team and lead us on a drive, so it was good,” Scangarello said.

Poe, a mobile quarterback with some speed, also had eight carries for 21 yards, although unofficial because quar-

terbacks cannot be tackled during scrimmages. Senior receiver Nick Cole, who led all receivers with seven receptions for 61 yards, caught almost half of Poe’s completions.

He had nothing but praise for the senior wideout, and said he expects Cole to be one of their biggest offensive weapons.

“Nick’s great; he runs great routes. He’s very quarterback friendly is what our coaches like to call it. He just gets it,” Poe said. “He’s one of those guys who know how to get open and knows how to be friendly with the quarterback. He’s a great receiver; I expect big things out of Nick Cole.”

Junior quarterback Chase Cartwright was also limited in snaps, and only competed in 7-on-7 drills, but threw the ball well. Sophomore Jordan Perry also lead the offense on a couple series, but struggled throwing the ball, going only 4-of-9 for 20 yards and an interception on his second pass attempt.

One of the biggest offensive questions this offseason was who will start at quarterback. Cartwright is the most experienced of the three, starting a few games this past season when starter Cary Grossart was injured.

Scangarello said Poe played exceptionally well, and he expects a two-quarterback competition come fall practice.

“Kyren really did a nice job, and Chase, for what he could do, did an exceptional job this spring,” Scangarello said. “Going into August, Chase and Kyren will have an opportunity to earn the starting spot and the two of them will end up battling it out, and we’ll figure out by UA which one is the guy.

The offense was a little shorthanded with the first two running backs on the depth chart sidelined with injury. Both Bauman and sophomore Casey Jahn were out for the scrimmage, allowing other running backs to get some carries.

“It’s been difficult managing that this spring,” Scangarello said of his injury-ridden backfield. “You know those are our guys and hopefully the guys that will carry the load next year.”

Cole agreed with his offensive coordinator, and while he thinks they could’ve benefited from the play of Bauman and Jahn, he said their absence gave other players a chance to get some snaps.

“It hurts a lot not having Zach and Casey, but they’ll be back. I mean we all know what they can do so it was nice to get some other running backs in there and see what they can do,” Cole said.

The Lumberjacks bring back nine starters on offense, providing a lot of offensive firepower from a team that averaged over 31 points a game last season. Scangarello talked about a number of players he has high hopes for going into next season, and expects a lot out of his offense, regardless of who’s under center.

“Kyren’s lucky, or anyone who’s in there, because there’s a lot of weapons. Nick’s a great player, Ify’s a great player, Dejzon [Walker], the tight ends [Rickert, Emanuel], and then when Zach’s healthy we can put a pretty formidable group out there,” Scangarello said. “We expect great things this year.”

Unique position group offers more than meets the eye

ith the clock ticking down and less than 15 seconds remaining, the NAU Lumberjacks twice handed their chances for victory to its group of specialists during this past season.

Each time, senior Andy Wilder converted the kicks, a 33yard field goal at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and an 18-yarder at the University of Northern Colorado, to win the games for NAU. These stressful conditions, with games on the line, forced the Lumberjacks to call on their specialists to push them to victory. Generally a position group on the team that fans ignore or discount, the kicker, holder and long-snapper proved their worth in a pair of games for the Lumberjacks this past year.

“It is a hurry up and wait position, so you have got to be ready to go, but you have to wait your turn,” said head coach Jerome Souers. “Your turn may not come until the last kick of the game and it defines it.”

The weekly plan comes from both the coaching staff and the group. Souers said the five work together to get better when left on their own and develop their skills together as a group.

“We have a design where they will help coach each other, help work through things together,” Souers said. “It is a great group and they have to be, because they have to spend so much time alone, away from the team working on their skills.”

Waiting Game Once their individual work for the day is done, the five head up to join the rest of the team. From there, the specialists join the team to run through punt, field goal and PAT drills.

However, when those are done, the group’s work for the day is just about finished.

While the offense and defense go full contact, 11-on-11, to work on the week’s game plan, the five specialists move to the sidelines and look on with little left to do.

“There’s comments around from everyone, like, ‘You guys

are so lucky, you don’t have to do anything’ and it’s like, we know,” Wilder said.

Renning added he hears some comments from the rest of the team at times, but feels it is all in good fun.

“Sometimes we do get comments like ‘life of specialist’ and things like that,” Renning said. “They know that we do our job and we are just as crucial to getting points and playing the game as they are.”

In an effort to prove their worth despite not enduring the grueling workload and beating of a lineman or a running back, the group makes a point to work even harder in the weight room.

“Since we are not out here killing ourselves as much as the other guys, we are going above and beyond in the weight room and other aspects,” Bachelier said, whose brother Ben also long-snapped at NAU from 2008 to 2011.

Weekly Routine The five who make up the specialists may be the closest position on the team. Made up of Wilder, sophomore kickers Ryan Hawkins and Brian Drulias and long-snappers sophomore Andy Bachelier and junior Hayden Renning, the group spends the majority of practice working alone on a separate field and sits together looking on as the offense and defense work against each other.

Job descriptions for the five varied this past year and nothing has been set in stone for the upcoming season, but currently Wilder punts and Hawkins takes care of kickoffs and place kicking. Bachelier and Renning rotate at long snapper, with Wilder joining the two in holding for field goals and PATs (point after touchdown).

“Last year we had two new guys come on and added great camaraderie to our part of the team,” Wilder said. “It just carried over to how well we are playing. We are very close and we hang out a lot off the field; we know each other pretty well.”

Wilder, the eldest of the group, generally leads drills when left unattended at practice. They lack an official position coach, so Souers typically works with the five to formulate a plan each practice.

Those specific plans fluctuate each practice as there are only so many kicks, punts and snaps each player can make in practice in order to avoid wearing themselves out or causing an injury.

“You don’t want to kick a lot every day because then your leg will just get worn out and tired,” Hawkins said. “We hit about, I would say I hit like 30 PATs and then 40 punts, somewhere around there.”

Wilder added the daily routine changes based on where they are in the week. “[We] try to do about 50 [kicks] usually. Sometimes we are over that, sometimes we are under that,” Wilder said. “Just depending on what is in store for the week. So we’ll do 50

music student and private instructor by day, Irish folk musician by night, senior music performance major Julianne Layton, a Flagstaff native, will be completing her musical journey at NAU in the coming weeks. However, her continuing involvement with teaching young students and performing in an Irish folk band hints that her musical journey is far from over.

Layton comes from a musical family, one that has many performers who also graduated from NAU. “My whole family is musical; we all play instruments or sing and my brother was a percussionist,” Layton said. “So, when I was deciding what I wanted to play, he was a big influence for that. So, kind of following in his footsteps, he gave me my first lessons and then I just fell in love with it.”

She began playing percussion in the seventh grade with the inspiration of her brother, Jeff Layton. In her ongoing studies at the university, Layton went through the performance track in the School of Music, which involves preparing pieces for a multitude of ensembles and eventually junior and senior recitals. While that provides a high level of music education, for Layton that is only part of it.

Outside of being a student, she also teaches private lessons to three local middle school students and is an integral part of the Percussion Discovery program through the NAU Community Music and Dance Academy. This program showcases percussion instruments that students would likely not be able to access inside of elementary or middle-school music programs. The program also allows them to explore and play on the instruments.

“She’s engaged in teaching through the academy,” said Steven Hemphill, director of the NAU Percussion ensemble and professor. “She was very important in putting together and continuing developing a new program called Percussion Discovery, which we hope to expand. It’s designed to be five or six meetings per semester on Saturdays for primarily middle-school students who are interested in percussion.”

She is specifically familiar with the percussive instruments used in Irish and Celtic folk music, such as bodhran, a single-headed drum that the player manipulates the pitch with one hand and plays with a double-headed stick with their dominant hand, and the djembe, an African drum played with bare hands, much like bongos or congas. She is the main percussionist for The Knockabouts, a Flagstaff-based Irish folk band. The experience between performing gigs in town and out of state with The Knockabouts and in the university ensembles allowed Layton to glean greater knowledge of music, with the two playing styles rounding out her musical expertise.

“It’s gigging, out in cities and everything like that, so it’s really [a] different experience, butI’ve actually used a lot from that experience to help me in my schooling and vise versa,” Layton said.

“Because when you’re out there gigging even with the percussion I play I don’t use music; I don’t read it. So, I come up with everything that I play by ear, just by listening to the tunes and by predetermining and a lot of the times I’ll have a solo where I’ll have to make that up on the spot. So that was something pretty different from anything that I had done before,” Layton said.

According to John McGregor, the band’s manager, vocalist and Irish whistle player, Layton’s musical expertise is a welcome addition to the band’s other members who are all accomplished musicians in their own right.

“She’s been great; the drummer has been our most changed-out instrument in the band. We’ve had about four or five of them. They’ve done the job and it was great to work with them, but what Julianne brings, she’s the first drummer we’ve had that is also a percussionist and the difference being that she’s trained and she understands

(Photo by Daniel Daw) [what] more of the role of the term is than the other players did,” McGregor said. “She knows how the sound is supposed to fit in; she knows what her job is to provide a platform for the rest of the music to be built onto. She is a trained percussionist as well as a good musician and that combination really helps.”

The Knockabouts consists of two families. McGregor is Layton’s brother-in-law and they perform with Layton’s sister — Jacquie McGregor — and Ron and Kari Barton, who are father and daughter.

“It’s easy to get things put together, because we communicate so well and they have a lot of the same interests so we’re not having issues scheduling things,” McGregor said. “Just like any close-knit group, sometimes we get on each other’s nerves, but it’s nothing that becomes catastrophic.”

After graduation Layton hopes to attend graduate school to learn more about the music business so she can maintain her music studio and to continue to teach younger musicians. Being able to teach and to continue performing is what she loves about music.

TV star and NAU graduate imparts acting wisdom

elebrities are people too. This may be a difficult concept to grasp, but when an actor from a popular television show is five feet from theater students making jokes the concept starts to sink in.

Seamus Dever, who plays the cop Kevin Ryan on ABC’s Castle, graduated from NAU in 1997 with a degree in theater. He came to the campus to teach a master class on the differing techniques between stage acting and acting on camera.

Sixteen theater students memorized mini scenes with neutral gender and location assignments as participants in the class.

Dever filmed each student individually as he read the scene in order to give pointers about what techniques work best.

It appears as though less is more when acting in front of a camera. Not only is it difficult to pick up quick motions, but grand gestures and loud voices aren’t necessarily helpful. (Photo courtesy seamusdever.com) Theater students attempted to rein in their natural desire to project, enunciate and show large amounts of emotion while running the scene. Though the setting was ambiguous, the dialogue hinted at an interrogation and each student took a different approach to portraying the desperation of their character.

Once everyone had been filmed, Dever went back through each of the videos and commented on improvements that could be made.

During the lesson, Dever also gave advice on how to enter the television world. He mentioned that for actors, the two main hubs are either Los Angeles or New York.

“I moved to Los Angeles in 1998,” Dever said. “I grew up in Bullhead City, and I wanted to be closer to everything I loved and knew.”

It turns out working at Kinko’s doesn’t hurt either.

“Lots of actors come in to [Kinko’s], and I always had a copy of my resume and headshot on

me. It sounds ridiculous, but who cares. People need to see it,” Dever said.

As for Castle, Dever has been in all 103 episodes. Not only does he feel proud of this accomplishment, but he is also excited for the future after Castle has run its course.

“It’s great. It really is an honor to be a part of something that is now a legacy. I grew up watching shows like M*A*S*H which ran for 11 or 12 years,” he said. “Castle will live on in perpetuity.

The most rewarding thing for me will be in 15 or 20 years when a young actor will come up to me and say, ‘You know, growing up my family would sit down and watch Castle, and it meant so much to me.’ I look forward to having that conversation with that young actor.”

With so many episodes of Castle, it might be easy to get burnt out on a character after playing him or her so many times before. Dever tries to avoid this as much as possible because it is difficult to produce a good show when it becomes a struggle to play the character.

However, Dever, who is Irish-American, feels like his character fits him well because he is a comedic Irish-American cop. While teaching the workshop, Dever slipped into accents and generally bounced around as he gave his advice. This behavior carries over into his work on Castle. “[Before I film] I need to be relaxed. Oftentimes, I’ll joke around with my castmates because joking around makes me feel at ease. When I get that way, I find that a lot of my natural impulses come through and it makes everything more fun. You do have to have a healthy balance of stepping away from the work or you’ll drive yourself nuts,” Dever said.

Dever frequently pointed out a passion for the job is very important. Without a love of acting and being comfortable with emotional vulnerability, acting is not as enjoyable. He works 12-hour days, five days a week, which is not always an easy schedule. However, the rewards of adoring fans and a satisfying episode as well as inner contentment make it all worthwhile.

Getting into Hollywood is not necessarily easy. It takes dedication, passion and the right attitude to persevere through the rejections. Dever taught his class based on what he wished he might have known in the hopes that the future generations of actors will continue to improve and bring their talents to the screen.

“I think it put me in a good place for the rest of my life, and the experiences that I got to have here were invaluable because it really gave me a chance from very early on. Working with older actors and directors to get their advice from day one was so helpful and I learned so much from them.”

Jimmy Eat World kicks off new release with statewide tour

immy Eat World, often accustomed to big world tours, including locations in France and the U.K., is giving local Arizona towns the rare chance to see them live. Hitting off their summer tour in statewide locations including Casa Grande, Yuma and Flagstaff, the band is going back to their Arizona origins.

“We wanted to perform in Arizona for the people in small, local towns where bands didn’t usually tour,” said Jimmy Eat World bassist Rick Burch. “It’s really nice to just go back to our roots.”

Since the ‘90s, Jimmy Eat World has taken over the emo scene with songs such as “The Middle” and “Hear You Me.”

Influential to several bands including Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, the band’s electrified sound bleeds with honesty and optimism. On Record Store Day 2013 this April, the band released a single to their upcoming album Damage set to be released June 11. The single promises a more thoughtful, mellow sound, but still keeps the honest reflection maintained by the band since their conception. For local Flagstaff fans, it will be interesting to see how they perform the material off their new album, and play with some of their older music.

“I am incredibly excited for the show, having full faith that they will sound great and perform well,” said sophomore psychology major Emily Wilson. “I’m excited for the throwback to everyone’s favorite song ‘The Middle’. I know the energy is going to be up and it’s going to be a great show.”

It is not a stretch to understand why they would decide to

tour Arizona. Originating in Mesa in the early ‘90s, the band started out in local venues with enthusiastic fans that cheered them into popularity.

“We’ve always had really great support from Arizona fans.

We had our first interaction with local fans when we performed in Scottsdale, Mesa and even Flagstaff,” Burch said. “Everyone has always been really excited and supportive from the start.”

Even if established bands don’t often find themselves in small, obscure towns, Jimmy Eat World is taking an opportunity to pay tribute to the places that got them started. Their time touring in Arizona will be a time to see how far they have come, and to appreciate the places that supported them the whole way. Jimmy Eat World will be performing at The Orpheum on May 4. Doors open at 7 p.m. and show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are available now for $22 in advance and $25 at the door.

liss oftentimes comes from the smaller pleasures life affords us, and one yellow bicycle stands as gateway to the newest means of its attainment.

Cultured — a self-serve frozen yogurt bar and coffee house — has only just opened its doors to the Flagstaff community, yet it already feels like home. Small but not cramped, cluttered but not untidy, it’s a comfortable and charming little nook.

Owned by husband-and-wife duo Kelly and Jessie Hibbs, this new venture is not the first for the minds behind it.

“I own a financial advising branch, a photography studio and biking adventure program for college and high school students,” said Kelly, who attained a business degree from the University of Arizona in 2008. “We wanted to do something that gave back to the community and plugged us into it. I looked at the market, did the research to find out what it needed and got this place.”

Cozy and eclectic, it’s the sort of retreat that should appeal to college crowds and local residents alike. The menu — bursting with coffees, teas and assorted pastries — is scrawled upon chalkboards. A set of stylish antiquated couches surround a small brick fireplace, and on the loft above sits at an upright piano, its keys open to anyone wishing to play.

Music isn’t left only to the ivories here; anyone with an adept hand at an instrument is welcome, with live performances being hosted through the week. All that’s required is a brief audition, two free hours and an agreement to donate a percentage of the tips, which is donated to local ministries and non-profit organizations.

“We really want to support musicians, and there are not a whole lot of places here that do,” Kelly said. “You’re free to do what you like — just keep it PG.” Artists more visual than auditory in their craft are also free to take the stage. In fact, they’re being actively sought: “We’re hoping to get some live art for the Friday Night Art Walk,” said Kelly.

Such exhibitions helped nab Cultured its own aesthetic allure. On the walls are a series of murals, filled with colorful depictions of birds in flight, the night sky and flickering light bulbs. Interestingly, the talent behind them is from none other than one of NAU’s own.

“Kory Miller did them,” said Kelly. “He’s an art major and attends our church. He did a live art piece during one of our services, painting an entire portrait during the sermon. He had also done some large-scale pieces for Young Life, so I knew that he was able to tackle big projects. I brought him in and had him paint.”

So it’s clearly pleasing to the eyes, but Cultured is not just about the look.

“It’s awesome,” said Abby Chan, a senior at ASU and Flagstaff resident majoring in dietetics.

“Awesome yogurt, amazing coffee and a fun atmosphere. It’s a great place to meet people, or just to hang out and study. I feel like every time I’m here, I run into about 50 people that I know.”

And the workers are no less enamored.

“It’s just a fun place,” said sophomore and criminology major Melissa Deweese, who has been behind the counter since the café’s opening two weeks ago. “Yesterday, we had a group from school come in and they played around on the piano and got everyone to sing; it was so much fun.”

While Cultured is now the third of the frozen yogurt establishment in Flagstaff, it definitely stands on its own as an ambient, locally-owned shop dedicated to providing customer service, quality product and a communal space for locals and tourists alike.

Located in Aspen Place at Sawmill at 219 Regent Street, Cultured is open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.

Album Review Phoenix-Bankrupt!

Phoenix is following in the footsteps of their fellow French natives (chart-toppers Daft Punk and Justice) by embracing a cleaner, fuller, more produced sound in their newest release, Bankrupt!. With nearly four years of silence after their Bankrupt studio album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Phoenix is back with their same ol’ sound — but that’s not to say it isn’t great. Their fifth studio album, Bankrupt!, slows down for no one, throwing their listeners into the fray of heavy synth production reflective of the soft ‘n slow Coldplay (e.g. Mylo Xyloto) but certainly melancholic (David Bowie’s The Next Day, anyone?). Phoenix brings forth yet another success, yet it lacks staying power in today’s fast-paced music business.

“Entertainment” is unrelenting both as the opening track and the album’s radio single. Phoenix comes in strong, sounding much like Siouxie and The Banshee’s “Hong Kong Garden.”

Regardless of their aggressive keys and solid, mechanized percussion, Thomas Mars keeps it mellow with down-to-earth lyrics such as: “Why you keep pretending like you want to let go? / Do you want to let go?” A rather hard-hitting idea to critique at the beginning of an album, let alone a radio single.

These feisty Frenchmen continue into their title track, “Bankrupt!” marking the official midway with an elongated synth solo capable of rivaling that of Daft Punk. As “Bankrupt!” draws to a close, its dreamy-psych-folk begins to harken to the early MGMT while critiquing today’s pop culture obsession with immortality with the line, “Forever is for everyone else.”

Mars goes so far as to use his personal relationships to fodder the track “Don’t,” while struggling on the gap between his autonomy and his responsibility to others. This track is not hesitant on the synthesized percussion and the heavy, whining bass rhythms.

“Bourgeois” reminisces the influence from yet another French duo, Air, leaving the track a bit drawn out and shallow compared to Mars’ subdued vocals. While “Bourgeois” would make for a gentle closer to the rather rushed style that is Bankrupt!, but Phoenix gives the closer to “Oblique City,” highly reflective of the inspirational ‘80s credit tracks that remind us so much of our favorite John Hughes films.

Of course, this would be it if Phoenix hadn’t included a phenomenal final track for their deluxe release. Phoenix jumped the gun on releasing a b-side/rarities compilation and simply added some 60 minutes of extra content developed during the making of Bankrupt!.

Despite the hour-long bonus track(s), Bankrupt! moves too quickly for the audience to truely appreciate their creative work. Phoenix hasn’t messed with their original formula, but because of its similarity, it lacks the power originated in Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
