n a day where five of its seniors were being honored, the Northern Arizona University (NAU) men’s basketball team couldn’t hold on against a top conference opponent in Weber State University (WSU), falling 80–78 in overtime on March 2.

NAU (11–18, 8–10 Big Sky Conference) led 63–56 with 2:26 remaining after three free throws were made by senior guard Gabe Rogers, but possession after possession, until the end, WSU drew fouls and made its free throws. The Wildcats (22–5, 16–2 BSC) finished regulation on a 13–6 run to tie it at 69, then held off the Lumberjacks in overtime to spoil NAU’s senior day.

“We felt that we kept on going. It’s just that Weber State, their guys didn’t get rattled at all. They basically did what champions do, and comeback and win,” Rogers said.

Two key moments, both in regulation, hurt the Lumberjacks down the stretch. The first came when senior guard Stallon Saldivar appeared to grab an offensive rebound, with 4:57 left, but he was called for pushing. PoliceBeat March 3 At 12:33 a.m., staff at The Suites called to report a large party that was being disruptive.

Officers responded to the call and encountered seven people.

It was determined they were not being overly loud.

At 1:33 p.m., a student walked into the NAU Police Department (NAUPD) to report an assault that occurred on March 2 at 4:50 p.m. near the corner of Knoles Drive and University Avenue. She stated she was stopped by two intoxicated males who proceeded to hug her.

The case remains open pending further investigation.

At 11:38 p.m., a call was received by NAUPD concerning a subject who was seen urinating in the common area of Aspen Hall.

Officers were dispatched but the subject was gone on arrival.

March 2 At 2:31 a.m., an officer on patrol made contact with an intoxicated subject at the Health and Learning Center (HLC).

The subject was transported to his residence at Mountain View Hall. He was given a criminal deferral for underage consumption.

At 11:44 a.m., staff at Gabaldon Hall called to report the odor of marijuana emanating from one of the rooms Responding officers received no answer when they knocked on the door.

March 1 At 1:34 a.m., a resident of Roseberry Apartments called in to report that she had been assaulted in her room the previous evening at 11:30 p.m.

The suspect in the assault was arrested and booked into the Coconino County Sherriff’s Office (CCSO) jail on charges of assault and unlawful imprisonment.

At 10:16 p.m., staff of Wilson Hall called to report two subjects were posing as Residence Life employees.

The subjects were using the ruse to gain entrance to the rooms of residents.

Officers confronted the subjects and the case has been turned over to the administration for their violation of the student code of conduct.

At 9:21 p.m., a dog was reported running loose in the San Francisco Parking Garage.

University Safety Aides (USA) were able to corral the canine and return it to its owner.

Feb. 28 At 9:43 a.m., a student called to report she had lost her NAU Jacks card. A person unknown had made purchases on the card.

The student stated she did not wish to file charges or make a report. No further action was taken.

At 9:42 p.m., a resident of Roseberry Apartments called in to report that cash had been

stolen from her room.

The case has been closed due to an exhaustion of leads.

Feb. 27 At 11:09 a.m., an NAUPD officer called to report they were in contact with a Parking Services employee who had come upon a forged parking permit.

The case remains open pending further investigation.

At 11:36 p.m., staff at McConnell Hall called to report a resident who was behaving in a belligerent manner.

Officers responded and diffused the situation. The case has been turned over to Residence Life who will handle the matter.

Feb. 26 At 9:28 p.m., staff at Gabaldon Hall called to report the suspicious odor of marijuana.

Officers responded to the scene but were not able to make contact with a suspect. No report was filed.

Feb. 25 At 11:19 a.m., a student entered the NAUPD facility to report she had been sexually harassed on Facebook by an NAU student.

A report was taken and filed for informational purposes.

Discussing legalization of Marijuana

rochnow Auditorium hosted a debate on the legalization of marijuana titled Heads vs. Feds on March 5. The essential question resided in the recent passing of legalized medical and recreational marijuana by multiple states. Heads vs. Feds featured High Times Editor-In-Chief Steve Hager, and the former head of the New York branch of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Bob Stutman.

Hager created the Cannabis Cup in 1987, an exciting event that included the opportunity for judges to sample many varieties of marijuana and determine which is best. Hager later introduced the Counter Culture Hall of Fame as a part of the Cannabis Cup’s festivities — Bob Marley was the first inductee. He has since written many books and created documentaries about cannabis and his general support for its legalization.

Steve Hager was up first in presenting his argument and covers five topics in logical and anticdotal detail.

“Hemp is good for the environment. You know it wasn’t called marijuana when this country was founded. That’s a Mexican name. They changed the name when they launched Marijuana Madness,” Hager said. “[The] first American flag was made out of hemp-marijuana.”

However, a main focus of Hager’s was many users and growers of pot are often incarcerated for long period of time due to mandatory minimum sentencing.

“We don’t have mandatory minimum sentences for armed robbers, rapists and murders, but we do have them for glaucoma growers. Locked up in a cage for 15 years with psychopaths? Your marriage in shambles; your kids are in foster care? If you lock someone up and

they’re worse off than when they came in, what good is that?” Hager said.

Stutman represented the other side of the coin as a former DEA agent and head of the DEA branch that was the forefront of the drug war. Stutman also founded The Stutman Group, an establishment designed to invent new ways of combating substance abuse and implement new methods of prevention programs.

Stutman made a statistical case and said, “If we legalize it, we will end up with far more users. A California study stated users would increase by 200 percent if recreational laws pass.”

This statistic may not appear to be worrisome to marijuana supporters; however, Stutman discusses why this would be a negative effect.

“About 13 percent of users become depended on [marijuana]. Also, in two American peer reviews and one European, [experts] agree that kids who start smoking marijuana at age 15 lose 12 IQ points per year from smoking marijuana,” Stutman said.

Overall, the two sparred back and forth, often drifting from intellectual debates to more comical tones, but the debate had no decided winner. Hager focused on emotional rhetorical appeals but often held up medicinal values of the plant. Through the debate, Stutman focused on statistical appeals often rebutting the supposed medical value.

The two agreed on incarceration rates due to drugs being a poor method in aiding drug addicts as well as the positive medical possibility for THC for glaucoma patients. The majority of the audience sided with Hager in rounds of applause and laughter, but America as a whole may be as equally split as these two debaters.

n March 2 around 9:30 p.m., the announcement was made public to the NAU Greek community that Sigma Chi brother Jaymie Chavez died.

Chavez was a 24 -year-old junior advertising and marketing major.

Chavez was an active member of the Sigma Chi fraternity known for his smile and happy personality.

“He was a person that wanted to make everybody happy; he wanted to make everybody laugh, he was a true character,” said Kyle Godwin, Sigma Chi president.

Chavez did comedy in his spare time and had an aspiration to open his own comedy coffee shop.

Chavez was a hard worker and helped support his family through his time in college.

“He knew what failure was, and he knew what it took to succeed,” Godwin said.

After the announcement of his death was made public the support from the NAU community was instantaneous. A candlelight ceremony was offered for Chavez within the hour.

“At nearly 10 o’clock on a Saturday night, the entire Greek community came in support of our fallen brother Jaymie. That means the world to me; it means the world to his family,” Godwin said. “Just shows you that the community at NAU is stronger than you can find nearly anywhere else.”

Thomas Bauer, director of public relations said, “It is always a sad day when we lose a member of the NAU family, and our hearts go out to Jaymie’s family and friends.”

Going beyond the NAU community, Chavez is survived by his father Leonard, mother Carla and brother Carlos.

Kyle Porter, a former NAU student and longtime friend of Chavez, created a fundraiser, “In memory of Jaymie Jay Chavez.” The money donated will be given to the Chavez family. The fundraiser website states, “We are asking for your support and respect for the Chavez family by making donations for his service and expenses and hardships for the family.”

Chavez also worked as an advertising representative for The Lumberjack.

“We must celebrate his life; we need to fill our lives with joy, because that is how Jaymie lived his life.” Godwin said. “He walked into a room and everybody would smile all of a sudden. He would like to see us all happy.”

Chavez once wrote in his bio on Facebook, “My name is Jaymie Jay; I am just trying to live life the only way I can figure out to. I believe that things happen for a reason. I like to have fun all the time; I never want to slow down. I like to read, write, sing, dance, act and do comedy. Life is a fun and interesting ride! So let’s ride.”

City water treatment plant to improve T

he issues of an expanding city are coming to roost on Wildcat Hill for Flagstaff citizens and city councilmembers. The city council recently had a work session on Feb. 26 on the topic of alternative solutions for the Wildcat Hill Wastewater Treatment Facility to reach an A+ water quality rating.

Mainly, the difference between grade A ratings, which plant currently operates under, and A+ is the excessive different in nitrogen levels, usually resulting from solid waste. Operators and councilmembers claim that, because of Flagstaff ’s explosive growth, the wastewater plant has been unable to keep up especially because it currently lacks the mechanical dewatering needed to deal with the massive amounts of solid waste or sludge that needs to be processed.

However, the economic cost to increase the recycled water from A to A+ could cost upward of $400,000$500,000 for a temporary geo-bag fix that will last from 2-5 years. Further upgrades to address the long-term issues of population growth and solid waste growth will be discussed at a later date by the councilmembers.

Brad Hill, utilities director of Flagstaff, clarified what type of situation the Wildcat Waste Water Plant has been undergoing in the last few years and the current struggle to gain A+ treated water quality.

“If I can be candid, as leader of the utilities department,

this is not my finest hour to have to stand before you to talk to you about the regulator challenge that the Wildcat Hill Waste Treatment has been facing,” Hill said at the city council work session.

The utilities director went into further detail about these challenges and why it has been increasingly difficult to maintain the highest regulation standards.

“We have not met the expectations of our community or our regulatory permits by not treating it to the highest quality known as class A+ and we haven’t done so because of three challenges,” Hill said. “Since January 2010 we haven’t consistently been removing nitrogen below the limits, and more recently we have seen selenium and cyanide show up in our sampling.”

The director then introduced Ryan Roberts, engineering manager for Flagstaff utilities, to expand on the possible alternatives to reach this class A+ rating.

“Some of the issues that this city would like to address for this temporary dewatering system is to reduce levels of solids in the SSBs [Solid Settling Basins]. Where the SSBs are full of sludge they don’t operate correctly,” Roberts said.

Roberts introduced some temporary, cost-effective alternatives to the council members more than the larger overhauls that would be required to fully address the problems.

“The staff has looked at multiple alternatives for this solution and the staff has recommended going with

alternative number three. Alternative number three is the geo-fabric option show and that is more closely related to our plant process,” Roberts said.

The council debated for a time, but eventually was posed with the inevitable question that either these expenses must be paid to, for a long term or short -term duration, achieve A+ treated water. Most of the council sided with the notion that there needs to be a temporary fix to make the treated water A+ and creating long term solutions for the future.

Councilmember Jeff Oravits summarized a general consensus that the council had been leaning toward.

“I definitely don’t want to reduce our quality. I think we need to deliver A+ water. We need to fix the problem if it’s temporary and we need to do what we need to do to deliver that water. And we need to start working on a long-term plan to fix that plan and to deliver A+ water consistently,” Oravits said.

Karla Brewster, continuing off Oravits’ statement, agreed and the council eventually agreed with her that the temporary solution of geo-textile that was supported by the utility staff was the best option until a further longterm plan can be developed. While the geo-textile is only a limited solution to a larger problem, the council and utilities staff have been taking steps to address the large problem of solid waste in a growing community such as Flagstaff.

Arizona bill preventing Planned Parenthood care overturned

federal judge has overturned an Arizona law that would have banned women on Medicaid from seeking care at Planned Parenthood. HB 2800, which was signed into law in 2012 and put on hold this past October, redefined where public monies for family planning would be sent and prohibited state bodies from paying for abortion related care.

The bill states, “This state or any political subdivision of this state may not enter into a contract with or make a grant to any person that performs nonfederally qualified abortions or maintains or operates a facility where nonfederally qualified abortions are performed for the provision of family planning services.”

State Representative John Kavanagh, a sponsor of the bill, said the purpose of the bill was to take funding away from pro-choice organizations. “[The purpose of the law was] to not fund groups that promote abortions,” Kavanagh said.

Bryan Howard, president of Planned Parenthood Arizona, said he was pleased at the court’s ruling and said the law would have harmed the patients far more.

“As I’ve said all along, the effect would have been less on Planned Parenthood than it would have been on the patients who come to us under the state’s Medicaid program,” Howard said. “We serve about 3,000 women a year today under the state’s Medicaid program that’s out of approximately 45,000 patients a year. So, it’s something like seven percent of our patients.” Howard said.

According to Howard, only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s three million patients nationwide use Planned Parenthood for abortion. In Arizona, the number rises to seven percent, with 7,000 of 45,000 patients seeking abortion services.

Howard believes the number of abortion services being offered in Flagstaff is quite low.

“Now in Flagstaff at this point, because of the state restrictions that have been imposed, we are providing no abortion-related healthcare at all,” Howard said. “All of the services that we are providing in Coconino County are exclusively prevention focused. So, there are annual exams, pap smears to detect early stages of cervical cancer, breast exams, birth control, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and vaccinations for HPV, which is a

viral infection that can lead to the development of cervical cancer. Our clinicians — our health care providers — are able to provide limited primary care in addition to that.”

Kavanagh said he was displeased the law was overturned.

“I’m disappointed,” Kavanagh said. “I don’t believe that we should be funding organizations that promote abortion other than when necessary to save the life of the mother, although my hope is that in such cases the mother would opt to save the life of her child.”

Howard said the law would not have stopped women from seeking abortion, because abortion is not provided under state Medicaid in the first place.

“Now, the only services that AHCCCS [Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System] covers are these preventive services — annual exams, pap smears and birth control. AHCCCS does not cover abortion care. AU offers many great resources in just about everything, and now, students will be able to take advantage of a new organization on campus.

The Bicycle Hub opened its doors a few weeks ago under the watchful eye of graduate student Samuel Hagler. Hagler is in the sustainable communities master’s program and he organized the Hub as a project for his final thesis.

“My main goal is to help promote cycling as a healthy and sustainable form of transportation at NAU and in the Flagstaff area,” Hagler said.

One of Hagler’s main concerns about cycling on campus is that when students get a flat tire or need other minor repair work done, they don’t know where to go. The end result is that some of these people may stop riding, which is the opposite of Hagler’s mission.

At the Hub, which is located at the back of the HLC near NAU Outdoors, students can come in and repair their bicycles free of charge.

However, this doesn’t mean that someone can just drop off their bike, go to lunch and then pick it up when it’s ready.

“It’s not free in a sense that we just give it away,” Hagler said. “Everybody has to put in something. If you’re willing to put in some work, I’ll show you how to fix it.”

If the Hub continues to run as planned, everyone who comes in will be a volunteer. Once you learn how to fix your own flat tire, it’s encouraged that you drop back in from time to time to teach others what you know.

Nick Jurik, a senior mechanical engineering major, volunteers about four to six hours a week at the Hub. He also agrees that this new resource in the NAU community will help get people riding again.

“Having a location on campus where students can learn about repairing their own bike will definitely help increase the number of bicyclists on campus,” Jurik said. “I wonder how many bikes are locked up and left in a rack because the owner didn’t know how to repair something.”

Fixing minor repairs is just one step closer to Hagler’s ultimate goal, but a lot of his focus is on the social standpoint of cycling. The environmental benefits of riding a bicycle are obvious and many students chose to ride to save money as well, but there is a whole other layer to Hagler’s thesis that revolves around the social perspective.

“I’m focusing a lot more now on the social aspect of cycling and how it affects society,” Hagler said. “I’m more interested in the power that the bike has to help people live better.”

The sponsors are extremely helpful in overcoming some of the financial hurdles, and Hagler is thankful to all of the businesses that support the Hub. These include Pizzicleta, Macy’s, Flagstaff Sports Exchange, Flagstaff Climbing, Beta Bouldering Gym, Alpine Pedaler, AmeriCorps, Campus Recreation and the Green Fund.

The Green Fund is paid for by students to help make NAU more sustainable. Each student is charged $5, and that money goes to resources such as the Hub and other sustainable efforts.

This fund and help from the other sponsors pays for the parts that students can freely access.

“A lot of this is funded through the Green Fund,” Hagler said. “You’ve already paid for it, so you might as well come check it out.”

As for Hagler’s plans after graduation in May, the future is a little unclear. He is working on building a small, non-profit business that could benefit the cycling community, but right now his main focus is on building the Hub. If this new organization on campus continues to be successful, the Hub will last long after Hagler graduates.

The Hub is now open from 2–6 p.m. on weekdays. A grand opening is scheduled for sometime in March, so be sure to keep updated to the Hub’s Facebook page for more information.

Editorial&Opinion ASNAU should allow alcohol at campus events

tudents attending NAU have incessantly been reminded that, in regard to alcohol, the mountain campus is as dry as the middle of the Sahara.

Both the North African desert and the Flagstaff campus boast oases of sorts, but to an extent. The so-called wet halls are plentiful (excluding Greek and freshman dorms) but what should be shining watering holes amid the sober landscape correlate only to small rooms in which an abundance of rules are enforced preventing the possibility of whiskey wildness.

A university pompous enough to try to ban the consumption of alcohol by its students would be facing a more improbable task than the 7th Calvary at the Battle of Little Bighorn. ASNAU law states the legislative committee is not allowed to fund events involving alcohol. Hypocrisy shines across the Bud Light bottles that are a commonplace at ASNAU-funded tailgating events, as well as at the student government’s own banquet. They annually grip their brandy and scotch at the banquet put on by them and for them, while the students who voted them into power longingly stare at empty pint glasses with thirst in their eyes.

Should ASNAU decide to change its bylaws involving funding events with alcohol, the possibilities would be beautiful: margaritas at the campus carnival, Jägerbombs at student-funded concerts and frosty ales in Lumberjack goblets at Skydome events. More students would attend these events, and those 21 or older that already attend wouldn’t have to pregame beforehand and stumble their way through campus in giggly stupors. On top of that, oncampus students wouldn’t potentially, and idiotically, drive home from downtown during their nights out because the events would be located on NAU grounds.

On-campus events, such as the carnival, and likeminded shindigs, are notoriously freshman-filled gatherings. Most students have been to these, most likely their freshman year, and have since come to the conclusion that there are far better things on those days than be surrounded by screeching newcomers. Allowing responsible consumption of alcohol at these events provides upper-division students incentive to attend. Only allowing those 21 and older to drink shouldn’t be an issue — just ask any bar who cards patrons.

It seems economical to allow the sale of booze at the concerts, the carnival and especially the sporting events. Students old enough to legally drink lack any sort of draw to these events. They’ve been waiting their whole lives to legally pop the cork and pound it down. Unfortunately, NAU doesn’t cater to this milestone.

NAU throws its potential business downtown and, in turn, repels what could be a haughty horde of Lumberjacks who would attend home games to drunkenly, enthusiastically, cheer on their teams. From an economic standpoint, NAU has an enormous opportunity to profit from the sale of alcohol, similar to professional sporting events where beers run over $5 a pop. NAU could very well capitalize from this endeavor by selling alcoholic beverages at above market price. The common scenario of binge drinking before oncampus events would become obsolete for those of age, as students prone to get their BAC fix would have the opportunity to do so on campus, in a safe manner.

Though ASNAU still has to answer to the higher-ups, a proposed change in its bylaws that would allow alcohol at these events would be a big step forward for those simply looking to have a good time.

U.S. Supreme Court, brought to you by Monsanto

T

his is the story of a farmer going against one of the largest, most powerful corporations in the world. It’s called Vernon Hugh Bowman v. Monsanto Co. and I’m afraid it’s not going to have a happy ending.

Monsanto is an agricultural business titan whose most prominent product is the “Roundup Ready” gene. Monsanto genetically engineers seeds to be resistant to a herbicide called glyphosate, better known by Monsanto’s commercial name for it, Roundup. They sell the Roundup Ready seeds to farmers so the farmers can use their Roundup weed-killer without fear of killing the crops. Of course, Monsanto expects to be paid handsomely for its scientific ingenuity.

They expect to be paid over and over again.

Vernon Bowman, a 75-year-old wheat MILES SCHNEIDERMAN and soybean farmer from Indiana, has been purchasing Roundup Ready soybean seeds for years and still legally uses them for his main crop today. He had to sign a Technology Use Agreement, promising he wouldn’t save the soybeans he grew and replant them. After all, if Bowman had the right to replant the genetically modified seeds, he wouldn’t need to go back to Monsanto and pay for more.

In 1999, Bowman decided to start planting a second annual crop of soybeans late in the growing season. This crop had a higher chance of failure, so Bowman didn’t want to pay top shelf for seeds that might not yield anything. He started buying cheaper, second-hand commodity seeds from a local grain elevator. The seeds he got were of mixed variety, having originally been sold to the grain elevator by many different farmers. However, Monsanto has such a stranglehold on the industry that 90 percent of all soybean seeds in Indiana contain the Roundup Ready gene. Bowman hadn’t signed a Technology Use Agreement for the second-hand seeds. He sprayed the crop with Roundup and carried on the normal business of planting and harvesting.

Monsanto sued Bowman for patent infringement to the

tune of $84,000. Bowman appealed, arguing that Monsanto’s patent ends after the first purchase and use of the seed product.

On Feb. 12, shortly before Bowman’s case was heard by the Supreme Court, the Center for Food Safety and Save Our Seeds published a report titled “Seed Giants vs. U.S. Farmers.” It found “As of January 2013, Monsanto, alleging seed patent infringement, had filed 144 lawsuits based on purported violations of its Technology Use Agreement and its patents on [genetically engineered] seed technology. These cases involve 410 farmers and 56 small farm businesses or farm companies, in at least 27 different states.” If a Monsanto seed gets carried on the wind and lands in a farm that hasn’t paid for it, Monsanto can and will sue that farm. If I ever meet Monsanto’s CEO, I suspect he will swivel around in his black throne, stroking his sinister mustache and cackling dementedly as he informs me the world will soon tremble before the awesome power of his orbital death ray. This company has continually demonstrated it will do absolutely anything for a profit, including infiltrating the U.S. government.

In fact, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is a former Monsanto lawyer, though he didn’t see that conflict of interest as cause to recuse himself from the Bowman case.

In all likelihood, the same Supreme Court that decided corporations are people will rule in favor of Monsanto’s right to make money no matter what. Now that people are moving back and forth between the private sector and government with impunity, the law can be made into whatever serves the interests of profit. Chief Justice John Roberts gave voice to those interests during the case hearing: “Why in the world would anybody spend any money to try to improve the seed if as soon as they sold the first one anybody could grow more and have as many of those seeds as they want?”

I’ll let you answer that, President George Washington: “It is miserable for a farmer to be obliged to buy his seeds; to exchange seeds may, in some cases, be useful; but to buy them after the first year is disreputable.” In other words, people should be able to grow their own seeds.

Editorial&Opinion Obama administration a foe of the free press

T

he administration of George W. Bush saw more questioning and criticism from more places than any presidency since that of Richard “not a crook” Nixon. Whether all of it was justified or not wasn’t what was important: questioning government is Democracy 101. The criticism of Bush shows true promise of a resurgence of the politically interested public that is essential to democracy and advancing our freedoms. The 2008 presidential election showed further promise for the future of this advancement of a government by the people and for the people in the United States in the form of the largest voter turnout in decades in support of possibly the greatest symbolic democratic feat of this nation in over a century. This, of course, is referring to the election of African-American President Barack Obama by a substantial popular NICK majority. The public, knowing all of this, seems to have KINTOP sadly decided to go on political vacation and remains shockingly unwilling to examine the Obama administration in any serious way in spite of its distinctly “Texas Cowboy” demeanor toward handling the presidency.

The Obama White House has demonstrated an admirable propensity for keeping the political heat off of the Executive and directing it towards others in government (props of special note go to Hilary Clinton). Equally impressive is its ability to gloss over any mistakes by publicizing symbolic, yet ultimately vapid actions such as passing legislation for expanded healthcare (that has yet to be accepted by 25 states) and ever-favorable, yet equally inconsequential events such as commemorations of statues of Rosa Parks.

Problems arise when this administration’s policy of keeping the President out of the blame-game translates into disagreeing with the rights of others, including members of the free press to disagree.

Obama’s first term saw insanely sexist, profanity-ridden emails to journalists that questioned his policies, a notable example being radiocommentator and former White House correspondent Julie Mason.

This inexplicable outrage at being questioned endures to this day, as the recent email from the Obama White House to Bob Woodward, known for his fundamental role in exposing the Watergate Scandal, shows. True, the administration’s undoubtedly righteous fury at Woodward’s disagreement with them on the sequester was tempered in this email with rose-petal prose, yet still translated into “You’ll regret this.”

Questionable actions on the part of the Obama administration haven’t been limited to attempts to quiet the free press. Recent weeks have seen the current administration make yet another constitutionally hazy faux pas. California’s infamous gay-marriage-prohibiting Proposition 8, that passed by popular majority, is now being forcibly put under Supreme Court scrutiny by the White House.

The executive branch has threatened members of the free press, and is now pressuring the Judicial Branch to fix a democratically held and passed state law, (whether the outcome was morally right or wrong is one’s own principle, not the president’s legal playground.)

The preeminent administration of the second decade of this millennium is making attempts to rival the democratically-controversial actions of the first. Where is the public vigilance and objection that was the hallmark of the Bush administration’s Patriot Act and Guantanamo Bay? No matter the guise, race, party or vision of whatever party is currently leading the free world, the public must be engaged, and the public must, above all else, question.

Standardized tests not a fair assessment of teachers

T

he Arizona State House of Representatives recently voted to allow teachers less time to redeem themselves following a negative assessment. The vote, one of many relatively recent changes in the state of Arizona to improve its general educational ranking in the world, misses a big aspect in the educational discourse. While there are bad teachers and bad teachers shouldn’t be perpetually in a classroom, funding issues and standardized tests are bigger issues that, qualitatively, make punishing teachers or threatening them silly.

School districts in Arizona were told they needed to determine a grading system for their teachers by the next school year. The districts are charged with ranking their teachCLARK ers somewhere along the spectrum of “highly MINDOCK effective” to “ineffective.” If a school district evaluates a teacher to be ineffective or even “developing,” the school has to wait 45 days before it can issue a notice of intended termination. Before this more recent bill, teachers had twice as long to prove they shouldn’t be fired.

The problem isn’t so much that teachers can get fired easier, because, let’s face it, some teachers are bad. The problem is the most likely way in which school districts will be evaluating is in relation to an already bogus system. National education initiatives have shifted focus onto standardized testing models that do not really give a good feel for school effectiveness, and it’s against those test scores teachers are likely to be judged.

There are five major standardized tests used in U.S. schools. The companies that create those tests are faced with the interesting challenge of developing a way of evaluating students and schools that have a huge variety of curriculums and cultural environments. Every student then is asked to take these tests made for a generalized population.

Students, as a study done by Michigan State University indicates, are likely to have not been exposed to up to 50 per-

cent of the materials on the test (assuming the students were learning everything from their textbooks). Because the tests are so broad and made to look at a huge population, they aren’t able to focus on state student populations specifically.

Each state has the prerogative to determine its specific education objectives and where to get the information for their curriculum.

In addition to this disparity, standardized tests are aimed at a very specific type of intelligence. Standardized tests, for instance, do not test intrapersonal abilities that can be very valuable in the real world. This focus on standardized testing has developed teachers who teach for the test and are afraid of branching out into more cognitive and creative approaches to teaching their students. Teaching for the test isn’t teaching students how to work through problems, and pressuring teachers to do so for risk of losing their jobs won’t make better teachers.

There are better ways to tackle our educational crisis. A quick glance at the numbers lets you know Arizona has a significantly higher student population than the American average. Arizona also has fewer schools than the average U.S. state and funds education, in general, at a lower rate.

A raise in funding for schools would be a better bet to make than threatening teachers with lower job security. Big discrepancies exist between poor schools and rich schools in terms of quality. Arizona schools would do better to focus on the funding they give to students and then rely less heavily on standardized testing as a rating system for our teachers and our students.

Of course, there is the issue of a national government push that gives value to standardized tests. Arizona, however, is no stranger to contradicting the national government’s word. If Arizona wants an educated populace, the state should go rogue on education, taking a cue from our perspective on immigration law. The state should put emphasis on quality and not on the vague results of standardized tests.

Editorial&Opinion FBI employees embarrass agency, public

T

he FBI recently underwent scrutiny for the sex scandal involving CIA director David Petraeus and the principal author of his biography, Paula Broadwell. The scandal was messy and embarrassing, involving extramarital affairs and crude emails. Now, the FBI is under analysis and public backlash once again for a long running investigation, ousted by CNN, regarding improper conduct by FBI employees. This is a huge embarrassment to the bureau and quite honestly to the country — immature antics and clearly illegal actions should not occur within a governmental intelligence agency. Their main priorities should be protecting the U.S. from terrorist attacks and espionage, not sexting or drunk driving.

CNN obtained a quarterly report sent out on Oct. 1, 2012 by the FBI’s assistant director, Candice M. Will NAPUA that detailed the misconducts of FBI employees. AdjuKALANI dicated by the Office of Professional Responsibility, the report included misconduct by employees that resulted in suspension or termination.

One report in the investigation documents an employee e-mailing a nude photograph of herself to her ex-boyfriend’s wife. The unnamed employee was instructed twice to end all contact with said ex and his wife by her supervisor and chief security officer. After failing to follow orders, she was suspended only 10 days and declared depression as an excuse for her actions.

Another report claimed an employee was served with a DUI after being pulled over by police for driving his car while under the influence of alcohol. This was the employee’s second DUI offense while employed by the FBI. He was ultimately terminated for “a second DUI while employed by the FBI results in dismissal,” because endangering the lives of other drivers only once is tolerable.

An additional report against an FBI employee stated he hid a recording device in his supervisor’s office, eventually making copies of said supervisor’s negative comments toward him and using the recording to launch a lawsuit against his supervisor. The employee also conducted an unauthorized search of his supervisor’s office and briefcase then lied to investigators about details of his involvement, during the course of the investigation. This idiotic idea of bugging his boss office led to the employee’s dismissal from the agency.

Another of the 13 misconduct reports claimed an employee was involved in a domestic dispute with his spouse, breaking her property and pointing a gun at her dog’s head. After further investigation, the employee was found to be struggling with spouse’s “mental health issues” and entered marriage counseling following the incident. The employee was sentenced to a 45-day suspension for introducing a firearm in a domestic argument. A firearm issued to him by the FBI. Not only were these incidents unprofessional, but many of them were illegal. Disciplinary action against FBI employees needs to be handled with more seriousness than in the past, which showed unnecessary leniency toward employees. It’s shocking to see what the FBI does and does not consider a terminating offense, and all the actions taken by employees that won’t result in dismissal. FBI employees need to be held accountable for their wrongdoings, especially because their high profile job requires by oath to act out professionally and intelligently. Petty misconducts like the ones in this quarterly report should not be associated with the Bureau. They need to better filter employees and what is and isn’t acceptable.

Obama must reject cross-country Keystone XL pipeline

C

arrying signs and yelling anti-fossil fuel slogans, people through the country congregated in Washington, D.C. for what is now considered the largest environmental protest in American history.

Their purpose: to ensure President Barack Obama honors his promise to tackle climate change by rejecting the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport fossil fuel from Canada’s tar sands to the Gulf of Mexico. They are calling on the president to recognize by allowing the construction of the pipeline, he would be perpetuating climate change and directly going against his continued pledges to tackle the issue of greenhouse gases. With the environCOLTON mental community’s position undeniably DARGER clear, the president must now determine whether he is willing to alienate an integral constituency in order to propagate fossil fuel dependency.

While the environmental impact of this pipeline will undoubtedly be less significant than purported by environmental activists, it could potentially symbolize a turning point in American history; rejecting the construction of this pipeline would demonstrate to the international community that the U.S. is taking a stand on climate change, and is making a genuine attempt to halt it. Despite the attempts to portray the pipeline’s construction as a way of bolstering the economy or reducing foreign fuels dependency, the president must see this is a debate over the U.S.’s dedication to preservation.

Proponents of the pipeline’s construction have long held that its construction will provide a significant boost to the economy by creating jobs. Considering countless reports have clearly shown climate change is being heavily influenced by human activity — specifi-

cally, the burning of hydrocarbons — supporters of the pipeline are arguing temporary jobs are more important than reducing arctic ice melt, protecting marine life, preventing further sea-level rise, the general wellbeing of coastal residents, etc. Not only is this offensive, but just plain stupid. Anyone who has the intrinsic ability to plan for the future should be able to recognize preservation of the environment should always trump economic stimulus. Furthermore, construction projects related to energy aren’t required to pertain to fossil fuels: green energy promises countless jobs across the nation, and doesn’t come at the expense of a healthy environment.

So, not only are supporters of the pipeline irrational, but they’re also incredibly narrow-minded.

Another major argument for the construction of the pipeline focuses on America’s dangerous dependency on foreign oil. Although they’re correct in stating something must be done to reduce this dependency, it is ridiculous to assert we should do this by depending on a different country. Instead of scouring the earth for reserves of oil, we should be subsidizing the industries that can meet our energy demands without presenting a serious risk to our environment. By providing alternative energy companies with the resources needed to compete with big oil, Congress could ensure we reduce foreign dependencies while simultaneously tackling the issue of climate change.

By rejecting the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, President Obama would be able to show he is truly dedicated to the prevention of climate change. As a president who has declared he is serious about tackling climate change, Obama must utilize this particular project as way to demonstrate to the environmental and international communities that America is sincerely dedicated to preserving our planet.

his weekend, The Lumberjack Editor-in-Chief Kierstin Turnock had the opportunity to sit down with The New York Times bestselling author of the “Outlander Series” and prominent NAU alumna Diana Gabaldon to discuss her success as an author. Gabaldon was in Flagstaff for the thirteenth annual Highland Tea with Diana Gabaldon hosted by the Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society. Gabaldon is a native of Flagstaff and graduated from NAU in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in zoology. She later returned to NAU in 1975 to earn her Ph.D. in ecology. Gabaldon is the daughter of the former Arizona state senator, Tony Gabaldon, whom NAU dorm Gabaldon Hall is named after.

The Lumberjack: Let’s start by talking about the reason you’re up here, the Highland Tea. On your website you say you’re not doing very many appearances this year in order to devote your time to writing, so why did you choose to come back to Flagstaff to participate in this event?

Diana Gabaldon: I come to Flagstaff a couple of times a month, because I like to sit here for a couple of days and just write — no dogs, no husbands, no phone calls . . . and as it is I haven’t been up in February. I thought, well, I’d come in March anyway, and I’ve been doing the Celtic tea for the Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society . . . I keep telling them they should call themselves organization instead of society because then they could be the NACHOS . . . but I’ve done this tea for them for I think this will be the 13th year.

You know they’re a nice group, and they take the money that they raise from the tea and other events and they fund bagpipe scholarships amongst other things (giggles). Did you know NAU has a bagpipe camp in the summer? So, anyway I enjoy them a lot and they put on a very nice tea, a lot of the ladies will dress up and they’ll wear special hats or they’ll wear costumes and we have a good time. It’s like three hours out of my day and since I would be here anyway; it’s not a big problem.”

LJ: With such an extensive background in science, what made you decide to start writing?

DG: Well I’ve always known that I was supposed to be a novelist from the age of eight or so which is when I realized that people actually wrote books they didn’t just spring out of the library shelves...you know when you’re little you just figure everything’s there, and you don’t worry about where it came from. I had known that I was supposed to be a novelist, I’ve always been able to tell stories and pull things from the other side as I call it, and the thing is there’s no marked career path for becoming a novelist, everybody who does it kind of rolls their own. You have to figure it out as you go because there aren’t any rules, what works for one person doesn’t work at all for another... its not like being a CPA or a lawyer where you take classes and you get a certificate that says ‘now you can do this’...there’s no way of doing that. Ummm and I came from a very conservative family background, my dad was a state senator here for 25 years or so and he used to say to me ‘well you’re such a poor judge of character, you’re bound

to marry some bum, so be sure you get a good education so you can support your children.’ So with this going on at home I thought well perhaps I wouldn’t mention I wanted to be a novelist since I knew this was kind of ‘iffy’ financially speaking. And so I went to science, I liked science, I was fascinated by it, I was good at it, I liked research, I love teaching, but I knew I was supposed to be a writer. So when I turned 35 I thought to myself, ‘well you know Mozart was dead at 36... you’d better get a move on here.’ And so I said, okay, I’m going to start writing a book, a novel, just to see how, because up to this point I had written a lot of everything, all the stuff you have to write while getting a Ph.D., scholarly articles, and tutorials and documentation and grant proposals and Walt Disney comic book stories, and a few other things...So I said well fine, I said you’ve been reading novels for 30-odd years, surely if you write one you’ll recognize it, so I said, okay, I’m gonna write a novel just to see what it takes in terms of commitment, and daily discipline, research and all that, because you know a novel is a big thing, even bigger than a PhD dissertation- though mine was 400 pages on nest site selection... or as my husband says ‘why birds build nests where they do and who cares anyway.’ So I said all right you’re gonna write a novel, not gonna show it anyone, it’s not for publication it’s just for me to learn how to write a novel. And then I can decide, do I wanna do this for real; And if so, then I can decide what I want to do and all that... but for this one, it’s practice... ost of us are familiar with the saying: “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”

Well, that saying has never appealed to me. Why keep an incredible story to yourself? If you feel ashamed of a bad decision, then know this: it is the bad decisions that make good stories and good stories are meant to be told.

We will never look back on our life remembering the nights we got plenty of sleep, so tell your story and exaggerate profusely.

A few weekends ago, I took a road trip to Las Vegas with a French woman, a Danish woman, an Australian man and the obligatory British man. The French woman, the Danish woman and I only know how to drive vehicles with steering wheels located on the right side, so we put the Aussie behind the wheel. All I can say is I am thankful for the ribbed part on the road that kept us in the lane all the way to Las Vegas and back.

This was actually my second time going to Vegas, but this time I was legal to gamble and increase my blood alcohol content. To me, Las Vegas seems like two completely different cities: one during the daytime and one during the night. When the sun is out, everything is gray and rather unattractive — my condition after a night out may have had something to do with my perception, however. There were Hollywood lookalikes everywhere and statue-performers that scared me half to death. When the skies darken, Las Vegas is covered in lights, filled with slot machines and everyone is dressed to impress — and some people seriously lack awareness of their body parts showing.

Revealing too much skin anywhere else in the world would have been looked down upon – but not in Vegas. Las Vegas is like a refuge, where everything morally wrong is all of a sudden free from sin. For that reason, my

friends and I made the trip specifically on the weekend of our British friend’s birthday — and celebrated Las Vegas style. Because the birthday boy was in fact male, we ended up at a strip club the first night.

Strip clubs are not necessarily my cup of tea, so, while there, I found myself having a conversation with the club promoter about their lack of necessity.

Due to intoxication, I cannot recall the entire conversation, but it ended with him promising me he would stop promoting strip clubs on one condition: if I came up with a solution that would earn him enough money to continue driving his fancy car and wear his fancy clothes.

At this, I said goodbye.

Once we returned to our hotel, I had only one thing on my mind: food.

I made my way to the hotel bar where they served breakfast, but I was caught off-guard with the realization I had to actually pay for my meal. I had not spent a penny thus far, so I decided to stay on the cheap train and refused to pay. A middle-aged man offered to pay for it—the first of his many subtle tricks used to invite me to his room. I gave him a definite “No” and left with an empty stomach.

After a weekend surrounded by glamour and trying to walk normally in brand new high-heels, I tried to wrap what was left in my head around Las Vegas.

My conclusion: a surrealistic experience which consists of both heaven and hell at the same time. As a woman, it seemed like heaven because everything was free. You are treated like a queen and life is good. Having a pair of boobs can also mean getting paid to press them up against random men’s faces. This is not so glamorous, but the men would probably agree to the contrary.

Having finally experienced Vegas for myself, I decided to modify the introducing wisdom quote to something like this: “What happens in Vegas only happens in Vegas.”

Quick to think, quick to laugh

umor has it the show Whose Line is it Anyway? is returning to television to the great excitement of its fan base. However, Whose Line may have met its match right here in Flagstaff, as this type of improvisational comedy can be found at NAU. Several humorous students make up the university’s own improv comedy troupe known as NAUghty Bits.

NAUghty Bits hosted their first show of the semester on March 3 in the performing arts building.

The NAUghty Bits club appeared on the scene Spring 2010, reviving NAU improv team formed a decade ago. Since then, the group has been gaining interest and entertaining the students of NAU with the support of their sponsor Arizona Playmakers (AZP), a Flagstaff-based organization that promotes every element of theatre.

Within traditional acting, auditions are held for a show and the cast has weeks or months to prepare for it. The cast members can transform into their characters and attempt to perfect every aspect of the show before setting foot in front of an audience. Improvisational acting is a bit different, with a little less prep time and a little more leeway.

“Traditional acting differs from improv, because with traditional acting, you have a longer time to dedicate to building a character and building relationships, and if something isn’t working, you have the time to try something else.

With improv, however, you have to make up a character on the spot and then just commit to it, and if it isn’t working, there isn’t a whole lot you can do about it,” said Emily Forest, a senior theater studies and history major, who is also the president of

NAUghty Bits and AZP. “Sometimes, it goes badly and that’s just how improv works; other times, it goes really fantastic.”

Both Forest and the vice president of NAUghty bits, sophomore theater major Taylor Lumpkin, believe improv allows for much more freedom than acting.

“It is rather fulfilling to know that you were able to successfully create something out of thin air and entertain an audience,” Lumpkin said.

With the name of improv, it is often confusing to people as to how the group would rehearse and prepare for shows when the whole shebang is supposed to be made up on the spot.

“What we do is practice possible games for the upcoming show and work on perfecting our craft,” Lumpkin said.

“Improv actually has very important rules and guidelines for creating a successful scene or game and we are continually working at getting those rules fully understood, which takes time.”

By learning the strategy and skills needed to perform, the members of NAUghty Bits gain valuable skills that apply to their lives outside of just performing.

Ryan Cummings, a freshman theater major, joined NAUghty Bits in the fall.

“Improv is great because when you start a scene, it can literally go anywhere,” Cummings said. “Beyond having fun, improv really helps people to come out of their shell and become more confident

individuals. It also helps you to think on your feet, which can help in real-life situations, such as a job interview or something of that nature.”

According to Lumpkin’s beliefs, improv can help both actors and all others, be more open to changes, new ideas and situations that happen in life.

“I know that a lot of businesses in the professional world are starting to require employees to take improv classes to gain some of these skills. In this way, I believe improv would be helpful and enjoyable to any person interested in trying, not just those involved in theatre,” Lumpkin said.

At NAUghty Bits shows, the audience will witness two different forms of improvisational acting. There are short-forms, which include more fun and games, and long-forms, which are made of extended scenes with plotlines. Currently, there are eight members in the short-form troupe and 10 members in the long-form troupe.

Together, both groups strive to put on shows that will allow audiences to forget about life’s worries and stresses and laugh until their stomachs hurt.

“Improv, at least for me, reminds me that life isn’t all that serious,” Forest said. “And that no matter how old we are, we can’t forget to play and have fun.”

he’s jumping from the high rope! That’s right, she! Wrestling — a sport commonly known for its testosteronefilled fighters — is not just for large, athletic men, it is for women, too. Women have participated in professional wrestling for as long as it has been a sport, and not just as the ones who strut around the ring in bikinis and hold the signs up in between matches. Famous wrestlers include Chyna Doll, Stacy Kiebler and Trish Stratus, all exuding strength, beauty and female empowerment.

The NAU Kick Axe Wrestling (KAW) professional wrestling club, started by senior electronic media and film major Matias Tautimez, also recognizes the strength and ability of women in the ring.

Mervine Nelson, a junior social work major, has been a member of the wrestling club since its inception in spring 2011, and began taking part in matches the following semester. Nelson joined the club because there were no female wrestlers in it prior to her, and for her love of theater and wrestling in general.

“I used to watch wrestling when I was little, and I thought that a female being so powerful was awesome and I really liked the characters,” Nelson said, thinking back to her wrestling

roots.

Her family used to gather en masse and watch wrestling while enjoying each other’s company.

“Joining the club and wrestling in the ring really brought up a lot of fond family memories,” Nelson said.

Before the wrestling matches even begin, intense training is necessary in order to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. Nelson puts in two to four hours of training every Sunday and has changed her diet and lifestyle in order to be the best she can be. However, her diet is not the only thing that has changed; her personality and demeanor have as well.

“It really changed my lifestyle,” Nelson said. “I’m not as shy as I used to be and I have a lot more friends now.”

According to Nelson, there is a sense of freedom and empowerment for female wrestlers that keeps them coming back for more.

“When I get into my character, I can just be free in the ring.

It is an empowering thing for women to do. It has also really brought me out of my shell,” Nelson said.

The KAW club merely wants to show women are capable of wrestling and are just as strong as their male counterparts.

“We try to avoid the highly sexualized image of wrestling and just show that we females can wrestle like the guys,” Nelson said.

Wrestling did not always come easy to Nelson, but the support of her trainers has helped her to improve.

“Mervine is as tough as any one of our guys,” Tautimez said. “She works hard and it is a pleasure to work with her. At our last show, she locked in an amazing Koji clutch on her opponent, which made me really proud as her trainer.”

The other wrestlers in the club believe Nelson is just as capable as any other participant in the club and gender has no effect on athleticism or entertainment.

“Mervine has been a great addition to KAW. Gender hasn’t been an issue for us; when we work out with her, it is about the same as working out with anyone else,” said Dan Hodge, a senior physical science major, who goes by the wrestling stage name Mercer. “Wrestling is something that anyone of any gender can be a part of; the more diverse, the better the experience.”

The second came with 15 seconds left, as junior forward Max Jacobsen was called for a moving screen when he appeared to be standing still. The Wildcats regained possession down 69–67.

Junior forward Davion Berry, who scored 25 points and was 11-of-13 from the freethrow line, drew a foul with 11 seconds left and hit two free throws to tie it at 69 before Rogers’ game-winning attempt missed.

After the Wildcats bumped their lead to 39–29, early in the second half, the Lumberjacks responded with an 11–0 run to take their first lead of the game with 13:32 left. After shooting 51 percent in the first half, the Wildcats shot 38 percent in the second, allowing the Lumberjacks to crawl their way back.

NAU would end up going on a 23–6 run after Rogers hit back-to-back 3s to give NAU a 52–45 lead, but WSU kept fighting.

Rogers scored 17 of his 25 points after halftime and made all of NAU’s shots from three, 6-of-13. He now has scored 10 or more in 14 straight games, and 20 or more in 10 of the past 12 games. With the 25 points, he passed James Plump (1966–69), Willie Nash (1962–66) and Dan McClintock (1996–2000) for sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,369.

He also passed Northern Colorado’s Devon Beitzel (2007–11) for eighth on the Big Sky’s career 3-pointers list (236).

“Gabe Rogers, playing against one of the best teams in the country today; a team that’s held its opponents to the fewest 3-pointers attempted and Gabe still scores 25 to continue his hot streak. He just isn’t one the best players in the conference, but I believe one of the best in the country,” said head coach Jack Murphy.

Freshman guard DeWayne Russell only shot 5-of-17, but finished with 17 points, with

six rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

“DeWayne hurt them in Ogden, and he did that again tonight. He was one of the only guys who could consistently get into the paint and once he did that, he made plays,” Murphy said.

NAU honored Rogers and Saldivar along with senior guard Michael Dunn and senior forwards Luis Flores and Ephraim Ekanem before the game.

All five seniors started the game. Saldivar finished with five points, nine rebounds and four assists before fouling out with 25 seconds left in regulation. Dunn had eight points and four rebounds, while Ekanem and Flores saw limited action.

“It’s senior day. It’s our last chance to put up a win for these fans and do something that the three [Saldivar and Dunn] of us haven’t done before, and that’s beat Weber State. I definitely think we gave them a show, but it’s too bad we couldn’t get these loyal fans a win,” Rogers said.

The Lumberjacks and Wildcats both shot 29 times in the first half, but WSU made three more baskets on its way to a 37–29 lead heading into the break.

“We have to learn to be like the Montanas and Weber States, when they’re down or when the other team is going on a run, just stay on a level playing field,” Dunn said. “We also wanted to get our guys excited and let them know it was their last time playing at home this season as well, and that they have something to play for as well.”

NAU will be looking for some help from the rest of the conference, but a must-win game starts next week as they visit Montana State on March 7. The Lumberjacks then finish the regular season by visiting the top team in the conference, Montana University on March 9.

he NAU swim and dive team took their talents to San Antonio from Feb. 27 to March 2 for the culmination of their season, the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championships. The Lumberjacks would not disappoint in their showing at the WAC championships en route to a second-place finish, narrowly finishing seven points behind the Spartans of San Jose State, who took the WAC crown. This was the fourth runner-up finish by the Lumberjack swim and dive program in the past six campaigns.

“It was a great weekend for us,” said head coach Andy Johns.

“Great competition . . . it was off the charts. I think we were up to 10 school records. The girls just did a tremendous job. We’re proud of their effort and really proud of the results.”

The Jacks broke eight school records, including the 200 medley relay, the 400 medley relay, the 400 individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and the 800 freestyle relay, the second straight victory for the Jacks in that event. Freshman Ellie Morrissey broke the school record in the 200 individual medley. “[Morrissey’s] hard work and openness, willingness and attitude to go for it are a big part of why she’s a great swimmer,” Johns said. “I don’t think we have had a Freshman of the Year in recent years. It means good things for the future.”

For Morrissey, it was a decorated weekend. She medaled in every one of her six events and was named the WAC Freshman of the Year.

“It’s always been a lifelong dream to be a part of a great college team,” Morrissey said. “It was awesome to see everyone come out and perform so well. Everyone worked so hard this season.

Coach Johns is a great coach . . . we’ve relied on him as far as training us. He spent time with each of us individually to let us know our work really paid off and that he was proud of us. It’s really great having him as a coach … it’s nice finally feeling like I belong somewhere.”

The Lumberjacks had a strong showing across the board in the 200-meter distances and disciplines. Senior Fi Connell won her fourth career medal in the meet, taking third place in the 200-meter backstroke. Junior Jordan Burnes broke the school record in the 200 breaststroke finishing in 2:14:13 breaking the old record of 2:16:02 by Danielle Filipp in 2009. Fellow Junior Rachel Palmer followed the 200 meter success by taking fourth in the 200 butterfly.

“To see us come so close to winning is great, but also disappointing,” Connell said. “My freshman year we finished fifth so it’s nice to see us moving up in the WAC. This is a very young team … the girls work so extremely hard so it’ll be a natural progression to continue to work hard. I’m proud as a senior to see I’ve left a mark on this team and helped them move into the future.”

NAU club lacrosse triumphs in home debut following two-year hiatus A

fter a two-year hiatus, the NAU men’s club lacrosse team returned to action this year. The Lumberjacks hosted the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks on March 3 at the South Field Recreation Complex and came away victorious in an exciting 9–8 overtime win.

After falling behind early 3–0, the Lumberjacks responded with four goals in the second quarter to head into halftime up 4–3.

In the second half, the Skyhawks opened up the scoring with two consecutive goals, but the Lumberjacks, who scored two straight of their own to retake the lead, matched them.

An 8–8 tie at the end of regulation forced the game into overtime, in which NAU scored first and won its second straight game to start the season 2–0.

Head coach Nick Adler said he thought his team did fairly well in their first home match of the season.

“Overall, it was a good performance, considering it was only the second game of the season. There’s still a few things to work on, but overall the guys are looking good,” Adler said.

NAU freshman attacker Davis Pataky led all scorers for the Lumberjacks with three goals in only the second collegiate game of his career. He also added an assist for a teamhigh four points.

Pataky has already tallied seven goals, including four in the season opener against the University of New Mexico on Feb. 24. The Lumberjacks traveled to Albuquerque and defeated the Division I Lobos 11–6 to start the season.

Senior goalie Charles Herald also stepped up for the Lumberjacks, recording 26 saves for a save percentage of .765 against the Skyhawks.

Adler is new to the team and has only been at the helm for a little over a month. He previously coached at the high-school level in Flagstaff for about four years, before being asked to coach NAU’s team.

He has high expectations for this year’s squad, and said they should finish in the top

three or four in their division.

NAU is a member of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA), a non-NCAA college lacrosse league consisting of over 200 colleges nationwide. The teams are divided into two divisions and compete in one of 10 conferences.

The Lumberjacks belong to the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference (SLC), which consists of teams from Arizona and southern California. They are in the North Division and compete against schools such as Pepperdine, Biola, Occidental, California Lutheran, Cal State Channel Islands and Marymount College.

The team was founded in 2005 by former player and coach Terry Elliot and competed in the RMLC for several years, but never finished a season with a winning record. The team was formerly coached by Ryan Hanavan, a faculty member in the forestry department at NAU. However, after taking over the team, he transferred to Maine and left the team without a coach, forcing them to take a couple years off.

Adler noted the struggles in trying to get the team back together.

“The guys have been trying to get enough players out there, but because it is club, they have to pay to play, so getting enough players with enough money to pay for all the travel costs and everything — it’s been a deterrent to trying to put the team together,” Adler said.

“The guys all ponied up pretty close to $1,500 a piece this year to make sure that this team was going and so we could get back in the SLC and start playing.”

NAU has almost a month off before it hosts Division I opponent UA at the South Fields on March 30. The Lumberjacks will look for their second consecutive win against a Division I opponent and their first win over the Wildcats in team history. “[Winning] against a Division I [team], it would mean the world to this team, considering UA has had a team going on for quite some time, and for us, we more or less put this team together the past two years,” Adler said. “I mean, it would be huge for these guys.

aving failed to essentially lock up a Big Sky Conference tournament berth with an upset of Weber State University on March 2, the NAU men’s basketball team sits in the mess that is the conference’s bottom half.

With only two COMMENTARY games to play for everyone but Northern Colorado, a lot of movement up and down the standings could still happen during the regular season’s final week. The Lumberjacks could win two straight and sit CODY tied for fourth or finish BASHORE eighth and out of the tournament altogether.

The situation could obviously have been avoided if NAU simply would have held onto its seven point lead with 2:27 remaining against Weber State, the conference’s second place and most talented team according to senior guard Gabe Rogers. But as has been the issue three separate times this season, the Lumberjacks will not make things easy on themselves.

Had they held onto home leads against North Dakota, Eastern Washington and Weber State, the preseason pick to finish last in the Big Sky would be sitting third, locked into the postseason.

However with that not being the case, NAU travels to Montana for games at Montana State University and the University of Montana. One win should put them into the postseason. Dropping both would require some help from other schools to get them in.

The March 7 matchup with the Montana State Bobcats obviously provides the best shot at a win. NAU opened its conference season with an 87–80 win against Montana State in front of a studentless crowd on Dec. 17. With the Bobcats having dropped their past four home games and seven of nine overall, it seems the Lumberjacks are in position to win and avoid the need of help from other schools.

In that Dec. 17 game, Rogers shot a mere 4-of-14 overall and 1-of-6 from outside to score 11 points. Obviously his run of 14 straight games in double digit scoring and 10 of those games being over 20 has him looking to make a much more positive impact this time around.

If the win fails to come against the Bobcats, the Montana Grizzlies host the Lumberjacks on the season’s final day.

The current conference leader has three games in six days to end the season, with NAU as the final test.

NAU tied Montana with 5:49 remaining back on Dec. 19 before letting the game slip away to lose 62–56. Montana’s stars, Will Cherry and Mathias Ward, both played in the game in Flagstaff, scoring 12 points apiece. Both Cherry and Ward missed the March 4 game against Southern Utah with foot injuries and could miss the game against NAU, providing a bit of relief.

The Lumberjacks have actually been a reasonably strong road team this year, sitting with the fourth most road wins overall in the conference behind the current top three. NAU has actually managed three conference road wins, which while it sounds poor, does place them fifth in the conference.

Potentially the saving grace for NAU is just how poor its main rival for a tournament spot, Sacramento State, is on the road. Currently 1–7 on the road, Sacramento State needs to finish with a better record than NAU to get in. The Lumberjacks beat the Hornets twice and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over them. Both teams face the Montana schools this week, so with the competition equal, NAU simply needs to keep up with Sacramento State to get in.

Despite a season filled with a few pretty big letdowns, the Lumberjacks still control their own destiny when it comes to a playoff spot. With a first-year coach, a lack of depth on the roster and coming off one of the worst seasons in program history, the team’s current position has to be looked at as a positive sign of things to come in the future.

Division II IceJacks season successful despite early postseason exit

O

ver the past four years, the Division II NAU hockey club has gone from a reformed team into one of the main contenders in the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s (ACHA) Western Conference. The IceJacks’ season came to an end this past week when they were eliminated in the first round COMMENTARY of the ACHA playoffs by the University of Utah.

Even though NAU’s postseason run was not as long as they would have planned for, it was still a postseason run.

Senior forward Taylor Dustin played his last game in an NAU jersey with the IceJacks. Dustin MATT finished his campaign with NAU ESAENA with 133 points, the most by any other player in team history at the DII level, and logged at least 30 points every season he played for NAU. Senior goaltender Quinn Mason’s NAU playing career is also finished. Mason will leave NAU without ever recording a losing record and played a total of 4993.86 minutes for the IceJacks. Senior forward Nick Short also completed his career and could have finished close to Dustin in points if not for nagging injuries and surgeries the past three seasons.

One positive coming from this closed season is that head coach Travis Johanson was named head coach of the Western Conference All-Star team at this year’s ACHA all-star play-down.

Now that the season is finished, here is a look comparing my predictions from the preseason skates: Leading scorer As I predicted, sophomore forward Vinny Eck. Eck led the team in goals with 19, power-play goals at 6 and in points with 34. He was always on the ice late in close games and was the go-to-player when NAU needed a puck buried in the back of the opponent’s net.

Top defenseman This one is hard to say. Freshmen Cameron McDonald and Nathan Kundla took over as the team’s top defensive pairing, logging most of the power-play and penalty-kill minutes in games, but junior Dillon Butenhoff led the blue-liners in points with 22. So, the rookies will have to wait their turn and congratulate assistant captain Butenhoff on his season.

Rookie of the year Freshman forward Corey Briody was the only rookie for NAU this season to jot down double-digit points. He finished the season with six goals and five assists, totaling 11 points. Again, McDonald and Kundla could also be brought up in this discussion.

Top goaltender Mason received a majority of the starts for NAU finishing his senior year with a 3.50 goals against average and a record of 10–6–1, with two shutouts and a stunning .91 save percentage. Junior James Korte was also good when called upon playing parts of nine games. He was 5–2 in his seven starts and had a good .88 save record.

MVP Eck. Mason was the MVP for a good part of the season, but his goals against average rose a small amount toward the end of the second semester. Eck played in every game for NAU this season (28) and hustled every shift he took. He was consistent with the puck and seemed to always be in the right place when his teammates needed an outlet pass.

The IceJacks may not have gone as far as they did last season when they competed in the ACHA national tournament, but this season’s schedule was tougher. They held their own against top contending teams and did not let any easy wins slip away from them like they have in seasons past. Overall, NAU hockey had a good season. General manager AJ Fairchild will begin his recruiting in a few weeks to fill the holes of the seniors graduating. The NAU hockey program has come a long way these past couple of years, and all the signs show that the program will continue to grow.

Viola Awards recognize Flagstaff’s

arts and sciences

T

he leading men and women of Flagstaff’s arts and sciences gathered for an evening of fun and frivolity at the High Country Conference Center for the fifth-annual Viola Awards.

Named after the late Viola Babbitt, a painter and avid supporter of the arts, the Viola Awards gives recognition to those in Flagstaff who positively contribute to Flagstaff’s arts and science community.

The host of the Viola awards, Flagstaff Cultural Partners (FCP), is dedicated to recognizing excellence in the arts and sciences in the Flagstaff area.

“We just felt that there were so many talented people in this community that deserved recognition and we wanted a way to honor them and recognize them and celebrate them,” said John Tannous, executive director of FCP. Overall, the Viola Awards was a grand affair, which has often been dubbed the Oscars of Flagstaff. It was quite a turnout of more than 500 people in attendance, including Mayor Jerry Nabours.

A panel of 25 previous Viola award winners chose the six nominees for each of the 11 categories. With categories in science and art education, leadership, literature, performing arts, visual arts and music, recipients and the contributions to the community varied.

Science Educator Award The award went to Brian Bates, a professor at Coconino Community College (CCC) who has dedicated his life to the education in the scientific fields. Besides his teaching at CCC, Bates is a member of the Friends of Flagstaff’s Future Water Policy committee, and many other programs within the community. Even after giving so much to the community, Bates says he’s not done yet.

“I’ll spend the rest of my life working on archeo-astronomy and the development of science in other cultures, because science is a human endeavor. It’s a process by which we try to gather information from the natural world to improve our lives,” Bates said.

Performing Arts Awards This year’s winner was Tony Sutera, a retired publicschool teacher. He has been in two local productions in the past year, and is a huge contributor to the NAU theater program and theater programs in Flagstaff and Sedona.

The Organization of the Year award was given to the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy (FALA). According to

US News &World Report, FALA is ranked fifth overall of the state’s high schools.

“I feel like we all celebrate this award because we’re surrounded by working artists who understand how important it is to have arts in schools and they’ve contributed to our success,” said Becky Daggett, executive director of FALA.

The Mayor’s Lifetime Contribution William Lowell Putnam was given the Mayor’s Lifetime Contribution to the Arts and Sciences award. Putnam is the Trustee of Lowell Observatory and instrumental in its work.

Putnam has worked diligently as the lone trustee of the observatory, bringing widespread attention into Lowell’s outreach programs visitor facilities, especially the Steele Visitor Center constructed in 1994. His work has put both Lowell Observatory and Flagstaff on the astronomical map, leading Lowell to be included on Time magazine’s “100 Most Important Places” in 2012.

Viola Legacy Award The Viola Legacy Award was given to the late Clifford E. White, known for his dedication and service to the NAU theater department. White was responsible for developing the first speech and theater curriculum and contributing to the development of communication and broadcasting at NAU.

Music Award A long-time outstanding member in the Flagstaff arts scene, Jim DeBlois has been a staple in the northern Arizona music scene, entertaining both adults and children with humor and guitar talent. He is an inspiration as both a source of strong communal support for Flagstaff arts and an avid participant as a musician.

Visual Arts Award A local glass blower for over 30 years, George Averbeck has made a commitment to excellence both in his communally inspired art and contribution to Flagstaff organizations.

His participation both in donation and personal effort to nonprofit organizations includes Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, Second Chance Animal Shelter and Flagstaff Medical Center.

His beautiful blown glass fixtures and selflessness make Averbeck highly deserving of the Visual Arts Award.

eflections of Flagstaff: A StudentCurated Exhibit’ aims to showcase Flagstaff through the photographs and experiences of students.

The Hooper Undergraduate Research Award made the exhibit possible because the award committee sought more humanities-related projects.

“This couldn’t have been possible without them; all of our funding was from the Hooper Undergraduate Research Award,” said Margaret Sheble, a senior art history major and student curator for the show. “I talked to my adviser and a couple of my friends and fellow art history students and we came up with the exhibit. We really wanted it to be interactive so that’s why we asked for students to submit photographs.”

The exhibit features 74 student-produced images coming from varying majors including photography, advertising, biology and many others, in addition to 78 images from the special collections archive at Cline Library. The student curators wanted the gallery to be all-inclusive and to reflect what the town means to students.

The images fit into several categorical locations, from some of the natural hot spots in Flagstaff such as the San Francisco Peaks and Coconino National Forest to the more urban parts of downtown and the NAU campus. The students behind the exhibit chose the locations based on input from students who submitted images.

“We just kind of picked common, popular places in Flagstaff. So, downtown, Route 66, the Peaks and put those up and people responded,” said senior art history major and student curator, Erin Carter. “There’s actually a really good mix. The most popular [categories] seem to be downtown and NAU, which was another one of our categories, but we have some good ones from the Peaks and Coconino National Forest and stuff like that.”

Wanting the exhibit to be open to all students, all photos that were submitted by students were accepted as long as they had been submitted in time. Eight photographs will be featured in their own space at a larger size.

(Photo By Kelli Tresgallo) For senior English major and art history society member Julie Barnas, the exhibit was an exciting opportunity to show the work that she has done.

“I’ve never had photos in an exhibit before . . . and since I’m not involved in the photography or anything as a major so I’m never probably going to have my photos in an exhibit again. [It’s] a really cool opportunity; it’s helping out the community, our community here and my friends,” Barnas said.

Along with the contemporary images from students, archival images will be showcased as well as another component of the ex-

hibit and providing historical context.

“Margaret and I both work in special collections so went through some our old exhibits and our old exhibit photos and picked out cool old photographs of NAU from the early 1900s and probably 2000s. It’s a nice little juxtaposition of World War I photographs of the ROTC at NAU to the present day student photographs,” Carter said.

The exhibit opened March 5 and will run until March 29 at the Beasley Art Gallery. A reception will take place 5 to 7 p.m. March 8 and is free to all.

sychedelic desert folk comes together well in decker.’s latest installment.

This self-proclaimed genre fits decker. perfectly and Slider hits right on point with the description. It’s soulful, spacey and authentic American music. A year in the making, decker.’s new album, Slider, slithers into your veins until you’ve got the itch to move.

The opening track, “Speak in Tongues,” has an addictive drumbeat that marches forth throughout the song. Lead vocalist Brandon Decker has a twang to his voice that cuts through to the surface of the skin. The vocals lick from beginning to end as the background groove enters the bloodstream. As the beat goes on, the second track, “Interluder,” makes the band live up to its genre. The earthy, psychedelic sound takes the listener to a peaceful place somewhere in the desert, into the tent of a Native American healer after a snake bite. It sucks out the venom and sings a soothing lullaby.

Slider then pounds into the sounds of track three, “Weight in Gold Pt. 1,” a dynamic song that starts out stomping, then slows down to a thoughtful, swaying beat. It transfers softly into the soulful, bluesy sounds of the fourth track, “Shadow Days.”

With the haunting slide guitar as the backdrop, the vocals move through to dance on the drums of ears. The fifth track, “Blowhard,” comes in to bring the beat back up and keep the blues intact. In track six, “In the Van,” the harmonizing between singers

Brandon Decker and Kelly Cole is comforting. Harmonizing with different lines of lyrics is not an easy task, but it works well here.

It feels like sitting at a campfire singing old songs with friends.

These songs are the meat of the album, but they slow the groove down from the opening track and the album starts to lose momentum.

When the next track, “Weight in Gold Pt. 2,” comes in, the momentum picks up and that tasty groove is back again. This is definitely one of the highlights of the album. It has the old soul sound and marching beat that feeds the aching heart. As fast as the momentum picked up, it slows back down again. This is where the album winds down to come to its close. The last three tracks are pure but they end the album too slowly. The listener gets upbeat with the seventh track only to be brought down again by tracks eight, nine and 10. It’s a calm close, but almost too calm.

With this new album, decker.’s sound has become one. The band has been previously made up of passing members, but for over a year a core group of musicians have created a steady lineup. That core group has forged a cohesive sound that melds together well. With only 10 tracks, Slider tells a strong story. It takes the ear from a drumming march to a psychedelic dream. While the album is exactly what it promises to be, it can be a little too slow at times and lose the groove. But it never loses its authenticity or soul.

e are not alone. At least, that’s what Dark Skies would have you believe.

Hollywood’s latest attempt at mild PG-13 horror distinguishes itself very slightly from its largely generic sci-fi predecessors. To put any lingering doubts to rest: yes, this is indeed a film about aliens.

A laughable concept? It certainly sounds like it. Unsurprisingly, the plot certainly threatens to veer into such territory at times. Yet, despite all indications to the contrary, Scott Stewart’s story of grey men and abductions is surprisingly effective in its attempts to scare the audience. The result is a decent horror flick that, while forgettable, manages to be an enjoyable ride while it lasts.

The Barretts — consisting of mother Lacy (Keri Russell), father Daniel (Josh Hamilton), and their two sons, Jesse and Sammy — paint a picture of the typical suburban family, albeit one in the midst of some hardship. Daniel, who is unemployed, is desperately seeking new work, while Lacy manages to keep the household

afloat with her position as a real-estate agent. This system comes at a cost, as a constant stream of bills arriving at their door puts both on edge. Tempers begin to flare as every member of the family begins to experience unsettling incidents and bizarre behavior.

Photographs disappear. Alarms go off in the middle of the night despite no evidence of any intruders. All family members gain inexplicable injuries and exhibit signs of not having entire control of their bodies. As events spiral out of control, Lacy begins to suspect that the forces behind it all are not from this planet, a theory so-called specialist and fellow believer Edwin (J.K. Simmons) confirms.

It won’t inspire outright gasps or screams, but Dark Skies is appreciably creepy despite its initially silly premise. None of the scares found here are truly shocking, but they create a fitting undercurrent of tension and dread that keeps one unsettled and engaged.

The core of the story is by-the-numbers horror, of course, and contains almost every cliché one can expect.

Rather than being truly problematic, however, this fact is remarkably inoffensive and does not hurt the overall

film in any substantial way. The unoriginality is almost comforting in its predictability, and largely forgivable when considering the small bits of creativity occasionally present in the narrative.

The subtle apprehension underlying the plot is complemented by other aspects of the production. The first of these is the cinematography, which possesses a degree of creativity and care frequently absent from films of this caliber. Many shots are wellframed and striking in their composition, giving the presentation a nicely stylized feel. The second strength is Keri Russell’s performance, which is both sympathetic and relatively realistic. It’s nothing award-worthy, but better than expected. The film contains the likeability necessary to make the ho-hum story a tad more meaningful.

It isn’t the scariest horror flick to be released in recent years, nor the most creative, but Dark Skies is a pleasant surprise. You will not walk away convinced of the plausibility or inherent spookiness of extraterrestrial life, but you may just reconsider your dismissal of Hollywood’s little green men and silver saucers.

QuickFlick Jack the Giant Slayer

ext up in the trend of remaking fairytales is Jack the Giant Slayer. Now, you may think you know the type of story you will be getting, but this isn’t the story your mama told you. In this revamped tall tale, giants live above the humans in between heaven and earth and have come down once before because dark magic beans grew a stalk leading up to their land. When all hope seemed lost, the humans fashioned a crown with magical properties, allowing the king to control the giants and send them back to their home.

Hundreds of years later, after the giants had faded to legend, a poor farm boy, Jack, finds himself in an unexpected adventure when a runaway princess and magic beans simultaneously fall into his lap. This is where the story gets complicated, because each of the characters — including the giants — has a different motivation to climb the beanstalk and interact with the giants above. Subplots include, but are not limited to, kingly advisors with sinister motives, giants with an unquenchable taste for humans and love and adventure.

There is nothing extraordinarily special about Jack the Giant Slayer.

The movie does not try to be anything other than a humorous adventure. Although the humor relies far too much on farting and belching giants, there is something charming about this tall tale of handsome men spouting puns about plants. For the most part, the plot moved at a steady pace with a strong and definable beginning, middle and conclusion, albeit confusing.

If you’re looking for a movie with cheap laughs and a story easy to watch but hard to explain, go with Jack the Giant Slayer. It may not be thought-provoking or dramatic, but it will sweep you away on an adventure for a little while.
