June 2 At 1:11 a.m., a call was received by Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) regarding a vehicle parked incorrectly in Lot 5. Incidentally, a door of the vehicle was ajar and there appeared to be someone sleeping in the vehicle.

When officers located the vehicle they discovered not one but three people sleeping the vehicle. The subjects reported they were only passing through the area. They were advised about camping ordinances and left the area.

May 29 At 7:28 a.m., a student called NAUPD from Gabaldon Hall to report an intoxicated individual was harassing passersby.

Officers located the subject at Wilson Hall. The subject was arrested and booked into CCDF for disorderly conduct.

May 27 At 11:50 p.m., an NAUPD officer called to report they were with an injured deer FPD had been looking for. FPD was notified but by the time they arrived the deer had left the area.

At 10:35 a.m., a 911 hang-up call from the College of Business was received by NAUPD. Investigating officers determined the call was the result of a child playing around and everything was fine.

May 18 At 10:26 p.m., an NAUPD officer called to report he was in contact with an individual in a camper in Lot 62B. The officer asked the camper to leave the lot and return to Walmart.

June 1 At 1:18 a.m., a call was received from the Drury Inn requesting help with an intoxicated subject.

NAUPD officers interceded and the subject was separated from the group for the night.

May 17 At 8:04 p.m., a call was received by NAUPD regarding a small bobcat that had been seen in the vicinity of SAC Family Housing.

Responding officers were unable to locate the feline.

May 31 At 3:21 a.m., several calls were received from the Hilltop Townhouses regarding two individuals who were fighting.

Both NAUPD and Flagstaff Police Department (FPD) officers were dispatched.

Three subjects were arrested and booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility (CCDF). One subject was booked on escape, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass and a warrant out to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The second subject was booked on a charge of disorderly conduct and the third subject was booked for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and aggravated assault on a police officer.

At 10:14 p.m., a call was received by NAUPD regarding an assault in progress at the Walmart on Woodlands.

Because there were not any FPD officers in the area, NAUPD responded. Multiple officers were assaulted and the case has been turned over to FPD to handle the charges.

May 12 Between 11:31 a.m. and 5:14 p.m., NAUPD officers reported three incidents of dumpster diving on campus. The first incident occurred when dumpster divers were spotted going through the trash at Campus Heights.

scene but the suspects had left the area.

At 4:54 p.m. and again at 5:14 p.m., NAUPD officers located people digging through the dumpsters at Cowden Hall and McConnell Hall, respectively. In each case, the suspects were field interviewed and asked to leave the area.

May 11 At 2:06 p.m., two subjects were spotted damaging the cigarette butt cans on the Pedway near the Liberal Arts building.

Investigating officers located the subjects and soon learned one of them had an outstanding warrant for their arrest. The subject was taken in and the other suspect was allowed to leave the area.

At 6:07 p.m., staff of Ardrey Auditorium called to report an individual was digging through the trash inside the building.

Investigating officers determined the subject had a ticket to the event that night. The subject was, however, asked to leave the auditorium. The subject complied.

May 10 At 12:12 a.m., NAUPD was called to report a violation of the code of conduct at Wilson Hall.

To wit: a resident had begun to spray shaving cream in the hallway and was pouring sodas down the stairs.

Officers got the subject to agree to clean up the mess. Residence Life staff will handle the matter.

May 8 At 8:57 p.m., officers spotted multiple people, including small children, digging through the dumpsters at McConnell Hall.

The subjects were warned against dumpster diving and left the area.

ere at The Lumberjack, we were all freshman once. We worried about who our roommate would be, wondered how we would learn to navigate the campus quickly enough to make it to that next class and tried to figure out what to do on a Friday night before reaching the coveted age of 21 (some of us, including myself, haven’t even hit that milestone yet).

Don’t let all of these new experiences intimidate you. Take them as they come and enjoy them. Let us help you out, though. Use this issue of The Lumberjack to introduce you to the campus, the city of Flagstaff (pages 14-15) and how to get around both (page 7). We also offer a few of our own ideas on things to do before you’re old enough to hit the bars (page 16).

Keep in mind The Lumberjack is on a bit of a different schedule for the summer. Instead of coming out weekly, our next issue won’t be released until July 11. No house, no bed, no problem: student spends summer in truck

ew would expect a mechanical engineering major, or any person for that matter, to voluntarily decide to live in a truck for an entire summer. Adam Zagorsky is the exception to that rule.

Zagorsky always contemplated living in his truck, but it was not until this summer he decided to take action. “[When] I was a little kid, I didn’t necessarily want to live out of my truck specifically; [I didn’t want] a typical lifestyle,” Zagorsky said. “It never really came to mind until recently.”

While most do not relish the idea of living without the luxury of a soft bed and running water, Zagorsky is embracing the

idea of living the simple life.

Living freely in the woods, Zagorsky said there are many advantages that make his decision to live in his truck even better.

“It all just worked out well because our lease was ending in May . . . most of our friends are leaving and some people are staying so everything’s up in the air,” Zagorsky said. “Another thing is that I don’t have to pay rent. So, I can just spend that money on gas and go wander around.”

Zagorsky knew he had to jump onto the idea he had been thinking about for a while before it vanished for good.

“It was always a pipe dream just tossed around with friends and I was like [screw] it, I’m [going to] do it; that sounds like fun,” Zagorsky said.

Free from rent payments and utility bills, Zagorsky is able to save his money, move around and do what he loves most: rock climbing and mountain biking.

“A lot of climbers end up doing that, just living out the cars so they can travel and climb,” Zagorsky said.

Hearing that a relative will be living out of his truck for the summer are not exactly words to warm a family’s heart.

Fortunately for Zagorsky, his family and friends were accepting of the situation.

“My grandma was like, ‘What the [heck] are you doing?’ but my mom was like, ‘That’s cool, do whatever you want; you’re 22 you can do whatever you want to do,’” Zagorsky said.

When camping, many fear the risk of

unwanted guests disrupting them at night.

For Zagorsky, the potential for dangerous intruders does not frighten him.

“I spend a lot of time outside anyway; people don’t get attacked by bears very often. But, yeah, I’m not too worried,” Zagorsky said.

Although he has no worries about living in his truck, Zagorsky said he is hoping to gain a few life-changing experiences this summer.

“I could either love it or hate it. I could end up just not liking it and I have plenty of options to stay and like places I could go to, so it’s not that big of a deal. I think at this point it’s going to differ when I try it just to learn a lot about myself. I feel I’ll learn a lot about myself,” Zagorsky said.

Diablo Trust encourages education and partnership

lagstaff is home to a wide variety of people and businesses with all sorts of skills and talents worth bragging about, but none of these seem to have a bigger right to toot their own horn than the local food businesses. Winning awards and attention from every corner of the Southwest, Flagstaff’s local grub quality makes even the foodiest of foodies turn their head, much of which is due to the rising success of the team up of local ranches and their respective food business partners known as the Diablo Trust.

Bar T Bar and Flying M Ranch have been around since the early 1900s. Both ranches started as family endeavors and have continued to thrive as such, because of the Prosser family at Bar T Bar Ranch and the Metzger family at Flying M Ranch. For a century, concerns about the usage of their land, in regard to the environment and wildlife, has been a prominent issue. About two decades ago, both families came together to deal with these concerns and the birth of Diablo Trust came to fruition.

Diablo Trust is an unlikely alliance that brings together ranchers, environmentalists, federal and state land managers, scientists, recreationalists and volunteers. The common goal of each member is to better sustain open space, live in balance with biodiversity, produce high quality food, restore watersheds, create stable living soils and achieve a community through their commitment to the land.

Judy Prosser from Bar T Bar Ranch and member of Diablo Trust shared her opinion if the trust has created a sense of community among its members.

“I think we provide a venue where we foster trust amongst each other,” Prosser said. “That trust is usually acquired by getting to know one another on a more personal level and by understanding each other’s needs and wants from the resource that we manage. We learn from one another, find common ground, and respect each other’s differences. Prior to the formation of the Diablo Trust, this was not always the case.”

Prosser feels the goals set forth by each member may never be satisfied because there is always more to do.

“We should never be satisfied with what we have accomplished so far,” Prosser said. “We have done some good things, but have a long way to go. Most of the different elements of our goals are always changing, so I don’t think we will ever feel we have achieved a goal.”

Kit Metzger from the Flying M Ranch and also a member of Diablo Trust, feels the project has assisted in educating the public.

“I think Diablo Trust has helped make ranching look a little better to the general public just because people now know that we are people who really want the same thing on the land as they do,” Mezger said. “We just want to have a cattle business here, too.”

“We should never be satisfied wth what we have accomplished so far,” Prosser said.

Metzger believes it’s easy for those who don’t work in the ranching business to be swayed by others because they are so removed from the everyday life of ranching.

“It’s all about perception because most people are so removed from working the land,” Metzger said. “They can be easily swayed to believe that any use of natural resources are bad and they don’t see that they are the end users of those products. Examples of these [are] lumber, beef, leather, water, electricity: all these things come from natural resources and somebody has to do the job of harvesting them.”

To help understand the whys of ranching, Flying M and Bar T Bar set up educational opportunities for those associated with Diablo Trust.

Carrie Eberly, program manager of Diablo Trust, explained the trust has another plan that helps educate and calm those who are concerned with the usage of the land as well.

“We have a rigorous monitoring program, the IMfoS (Integrated Monitoring for Sustainability) that is in place to determine whether we

are moving towards these goals,” Eberly said. “We measure soil, water, and vegetation characteristics on the ground. As well as social indicators, how the collaborative organization works, and management objectives are implemented is also measured. The success is indicated as a movement towards benchmarks we have set.”

Prosser believes the monitoring system is a productive way of measuring, but there are also other alternatives.

“The IMfoS program is one means of measuring those goals. Another is how productive, profitable, and longterm the ranch businesses are, and lastly, I think how satisfied the Diablo Trust group feels about how it is functioning,” Eberly said.

Although Diablo Trust does a lot to educate the public on ranching, it has also created a positive impact among its members and has simultaneously helped educate them.

Because Diablo Trust made it part of their mission to educate the public, restaurants around Flagstaff have become more aware of the local beef being produced.

“Ellen Parrish and Flying M Ranch have done a good job of increasing the awareness of local beef and that the product is available for local businesses,” Eberly said.

One of the local businesses that contributed to local beef production is Diablo Burger. Owner Derrick Widmark used to be the director and was in charge of public realtions for Diablo Trust, but has taken a back seat because of business reasons. Even though Widmark isn’t a member of Diablo Trust anymore, he still wants to use local products in his restaurants.

“I would like to be 100 percent local, but no one grows potatoes in Flag so, we are forced to go somewhere else,” Widmark said.

Although both Bar T Bar and Flying M Ranch supply Diablo Burger’s beef, Prosser believes Flying M Ranch supplies more local businesses.

“Other restaurant owners are using Flying M beef, primarily because they have a salesperson, and because she is a real advocate of DT and local food,” Prosser said.

Flying M Ranch’s beef is being sold in numerous locations in Flagstaff.

Canyon County Catering, Community Supported Agriculture, Cottage Place Restaurant and Pizza Furiosa are just a few of the local establishments they serve. Additionally, Bar T Bar Ranch is partners with Diablo Burger, Seedstock Plus and Country Natural Beef.

Although both Bar T Bar and Flying M Ranch are thriving because of their partnerships, members of Diablo Trust don’t feel that these relationships are their most prized accomplishments.

“The bringing together of adversaries in an open forum that resulted in two decades of collaboration, successful projects, and fruitful relationships is most significant achievement of the trust,” Eberly said.

Metzger had a similar opinion when it came to their biggest achievement.

“I think the most significant thing Diablo Trust accomplished is that it brought a diverse group, with differing points of view together to accomplish things on the ground,” Metzger said.

Recycling glass in Flagstaff

t's that split second. You're walking to class and have just a moment of time to think about whether you should recycle your recently drained glass Izze bottle or just toss it to the wayside. Which will you do?

If you said you would recycle the glass bottle, you are wrong. Although NAU does offer the option to opt out of throwing everything in the trash, that does not mean you can simply recycle anything and everything — like glass.

However, the City of Flagstaff does offer places to drop off glass and allows residents to pay for glass recycling pick-up. Yes, they do indeed recycle it. If you're hoping the campus recycling bins will automatically sort out the glass recycling for you,

you're out of luck.

So, what do you do when you're walking through the University Union and have a glass bottle to dispose of?

Well, the first option is to reuse the glass bottle yourself as a relatively free re-usable water bottle. The second option is to put it in your backpack until you can reach a glass-recycling receptacle, the closest one being either by Target or near the downtown city bus and Mountain Link bus stop.

Be conscious the next time you are tempted to throw away your glass bottle. Not only will glass materials in the NAU recycling bins prevent other actually recyclable items to not be recycled, almost 100 percent of recycled glass is used to remake containers.

New dining app, Tapingo, met with mixed reviews

he latest app for smart phone users at NAU is Tapingo. The "tap-ngo" app is designed to make ordering and picking up food easier for those who dine on campus.

Advertising instructions say to download the app or visit tapingo.com to place your order at any of the participating food services on or around campus. You are able to pay with Jack Dining Express card, meal plan transfers or a credit card from your phone. This process allows the app user to go to the food service of their choice and grab their food with little to no waiting.

For Colby Rycus, a sophomore and crimonoloy and criminal justice major, she experienced the app while working at the Green Scene in

the HLC. From the time the order is placed through Tapingo the workers have 15 minutes to complete the order.

"The people who are standing in front of us aren't necessarily more important but it's better customer service to please the people in front of you," Rycus said.

Mixed reviews do come from the student body.

With some time and rising popularity of the app will either rise to the students’ demands or falter.

"Myself as well as many other employees do not like the Tapingo system. It makes things less efficient within the units. Often food can be sitting out for up to 20 minutes sometimes because people wait so long to pick it up," said Rebece Rice, a finance and economics major.

Alternative transportation is option

o incoming freshmen unsure of the best way to move from class to class and off campus next year: now is a good time to get a bike.

It may come as a shock to hear your four-wheeled, dinosaurburning friends are looking like the choice of the past at NAU, but the school is making a comprehensive effort to reduce vehicular traffic and parking while increasing bike and pedestrian traffic.

Parking on campus is becoming a less and less attractive option for students. While upperclassmen may know parking at NAU was never the sexiest state of affairs, parking spaces can be expected to slowly move to the fringes of campus. Roadways are already purposefully less conducive to casual traffic flow on campus — a step in line with many other universities around the nation. Bike lanes and pedestrian pathways are much easier to navigate than roads (and they’re supposed to be).

Don’t let this daunt you. Sustainable transportation is on the rise at NAU and is definitely not out of vogue. If you want to avoid traffic gridlock on your way from north campus to south campus for your class in 20 minutes, walking, biking or taking a shuttle is your best shot. Don’t have a bike at the moment? Go get familiar with the yellow bike program.

Other options, of course, are at your fingertips. The NAU shuttle system is constantly improving and now boasts a GPS locating service for riders who want to know exactly when the next bus will arrive or where it is at any given moment. For those without a smartphone, the buses are scheduled to run every five minutes during peak express hours.

NAU has added a three-stop shuttle service, known as Rapid Ride, that gets you to your destination even faster. The shuttles stop at the Social and Behavior Sciences building, the University Union and by Old Main.

According to Inside NAU, the Rapid Ride has an “average waiting time of approximately five minutes,” and was implemented in order to meet the demands of an increasing student population and sluggish shuttle services.

To get off campus, the Mountain Link, the City of Flagstaff’s bus service, has a partnership with NAU that allows Lumberjacks with student ID to ride free of charge to downtown Flagstaff or Harkins Theatres on Route 10. Late-night services run from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends to keep your saucy fingers off the steering wheel.

During the past academic year, according to a survey conducted each spring by Parking and Shuttle Services, 29 percent of students identified as bike riders. Another 20 percent said they rode the Mountain Link bus services.

“Campus Shuttle Services provided service to an average of 50,000 riders per week,” said Erin Stam, the director of Parking and Shuttle Services at NAU. This means, across campus and spread evenly among students, each NAU student uses the shuttle service about twice a week. The bus routes were developed with a clear and accessible loop in mind that would support ridership of this nature.

NAU shuttle services are fairly new to the campus, and are in accordance with a master plan the university developed and published in 2010. An overall goal of the university’s plan is to increase the attractiveness of the university and place emphasis on a green and sustainable future for the campus.

illed by its organizers as a celebration of all things Flagstaff, the fourth annual Flagstaff Hullabaloo kicked off June 1 in Wheeler

Park.

Hullabaloo began in 2010 in part to fill the void left when the Tour de Fat ended its run after eight years in 2007. While Tour de Fat and Hullabaloo share a similar vibe, Hullabaloo has not spawned unruly crowds, which some blamed on out-of-towners that caused the Tour de Fat to shut down. This is due largely to the efforts of Hullabaloo organizers to keep things mellow.

For the first three years of its run, Hullabaloo was simply a one-day event. This year, however, the big wheel kept on turning, and you can bet your sweet bottom if there was a particularly proud woman by the name of Mary attending, she would have most certainly been burning, because it was expanded to two days. The family-friendly event drew more than 7,000 people during its run, with 4,600 attending on June 1 and an estimated 2,500 on June 2.

The event kicked off June 1 with a bike parade that began at 9:30 a.m., with the gates opening at 10.

More than 90 vendors vied for attention from the crowd, appealing to the tastes of the Flagstaff culture and local business. If there was some cash burning a hole in your pocket, this was the place to put out the fire.

For the adults, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company had two locations to serve guests beer in the northeast and southwest corners of the enclosure. This being a family friendly environment, organizers made a concerted effort to ensure responsible alcohol consumption by the patrons. If the level of safety still managed to remain an itch on your back, the Flagstaff Police Department provided additional security to ensure drinking remained under control and didn’t spoil the fun for others.

Additionally, a portion of the proceeds is going to benefit three local non-profits: Grand Canyon Youth, Flagstaff Foodlink and the YMCA. So, if you’re a guilt-ridden Catholic or just an average Joe who can’t hold their liquor, knocking back a few helped you feel like a winner afterwards, for a change. This philanthropy has been at the heart

of the festival since its inception three years ago. In its first three years, Hullabaloo raised more than $30,000 for local charities. This year, the first 250 people who brought two cans of food were admitted for free.

Beyond the booze, there were plenty of treats to satisfy that grumble in your gut. Festival goers could choose from Fratelli Pizza, Taverna Greek Grill, Cheba Hut Custom Oven Baked Sandwiches, funnel cakes, shaved ice lemonade and more.

There was mechanical bull riding, a climbing wall and bungee trampolines. Assuming those activities tickle your, oh-so adult, fancy, you could rest at ease knowing the kids were not left in the dust, as there were four monster bouncy castles as well.

Everything Flagstaff wouldn’t be “everything” without some killer jams. The music choice and performances were one of the major draws to the event, and Hullabaloo started the music fest with the Voluntary String Band. They were followed by the Dave Logan Band, Ballet Folklorico and Dry River Yacht Club.

The attire for the Hullabaloo has always been a hoot and a half for new and returning attendees alike, as people expressed themselves through their

threads. By 3:45 p.m., it was time for the Kid’s Costume contest, sponsored by INCAHOOTS, followed by the Kid’s Parade, but the children weren’t the only ones dressed for the occasion. After the Latin/cumbia stylings of Chicha Dust, it was time for the adults to have their costumes judged.

The remaining entertainment duties of the evening fell to a New Orleans jazz band, Bad Cactus Brass Band and the Brazilian drumming of Sambatuque. The experimental rock of El Ten Eleven closed out the first night.

Sunday opened with the indie rock sounds of Planet Sandwich, who were followed by fellow indie rockers Nolan & the Confounders. Then Sambatuque returned for a second show with the circus act of Circus Bacchus soon after. The blues band Sugar Thieves rounded out the afternoon, giving way to second costume contests for both the kids and adults in the crowd and another Kid’s parade.

At 4:30 p.m., the closing act, Grammy Award nominees, Grupo Fantasma kept the crowds on their feet for the last hour and a half of the twoday event.Missed the revelry this year? Never fear, Hullabaloo will be back to keep the Flagstaff party rocking in 2014.

aybe you’re new to town. Maybe you’re exploring the city with your soon-to-be college student. Maybe you’ve lived here four decades and remember when the area code wasn’t 928 and it actually used to snow in the winter. Regardless, here is a list of ten various Flagstaff highlights— some are revered institutions, and others are new establishments, but all are worth a venture on a summer day.

Eat | Drink | Shop | Visit | Play | FLAG. 1. Buffalo Park Nestled atop McMillan Mesa, Buffalo Park provides a wealth of easy-access recreation for those of all skill levels.

Marked trails, complete with fun exercise stations, create great running loops, while kids can frolic through wildflowers and pose with the buffalo statue. The park backs up to Mount Elden and the Pipeline Trail, a great trek for trail running and mountain biking.

Summer and early fall running events are often held at this central hub, and professional running teams often venture to the park to train for upcoming races. The unique Flagstaff vibe couples these ultra althletes with moms and toddlers jogging through with strollers and teenagers racing around on mountain bikes.

2. Diablo Burger Locals and visitors have long revered the almighty burger tucked back in the corner of Heritage Square, and now have another reason to imbibe in some protein: DB now accepts credit cards. Many a vegetarian have been turned from their plant-consuming ways after catching a whiff of DB’s local and organic burgers. They’re a little pricier than your average substandard patty, but the unique burgers, local brews and fries from nirvana outweigh the price.

With build-your-own burgers and menu toppings that include beets and fried eggs, a burger becomes a concotion worthy of either kings or art galleries. The herb-seasoned fries complement the local beef, and can be paired with homemade dipping sauces or washed down with a local brew on tap.

3. Satchmo’s If you’ve got the Southern blues, head over to Satchmo’s to relieve your soul. Nestled in an unassuming brick building on the East side, Satchmo’s redefines what barbecue truly is. Although it’s a drive from the university and downtown proper, the mouth-watering brisket, cooked for more than 10 hours, melts in your mouth and is worth the car jaunt. Coupled with house-made BBQ sauce, crispy tots and classic red beans and rice, your Cajun fantasies will come true. There are even crayons to color on the tablecloths with and live music on the patio to accompany your brisket, po’boy and ribs.

Though the storefront is far from pretentious, the food can outshine even the best Louisiana grub. Paired with some of the most friendly and attentive service this side of the Mississippi, Satchmo’s is the ultimate Flagstaff barbecue stop.

4. Tinderbox Kitchen If you’re looking for a slightly more upper-crust experience that still has Flagstaff flair, Tinderbox Kitchen crafts one-of-a kind, whimsical dishes such as semolina fried calamari, jalapeno mac-n-cheese and teriyaki-glazed pork porterhouse. The evolving menu of “American comfort food . . . refined” gives diners something new to look forward to each night. Coupled with carefully selected wines and cocktails, the food remains as unpretentious but compelling as the atmosphere. Don’t be surprised to see a mix of khaki shorts and three-piece suits.

If you’re looking for a casual drink, The Annex bar serves those looking to imbibe and has food at a more affordable price point. The outdoor patio is an excellent spot to sit and people watch on a hot summer day.

5. Peace Surplus Named contrary to all of the “war surplus” stores popping up post-Vietnam, Peace Surplus is a hub for all sorts of outdoor and Route 66 gear. Stock up for your outdoor adventure and pick up trail maps and local suggestions for great places to recreate.

A local version of REI, Peace is the place to stock up for jaunts to the San Francisco Peaks or expeditions in the Grand Canyon. Nab some camo gear for hunting season or score some sweet swag in this classically laid-back Flagstaff gear hub.

6. Macy’s European Coffee House After a full Flagstaff day, you’re probably ready for an afternoon jolt, and Macy’s has your cup. A Flagstaff nucleus, you’re bound to find a mix of locals, playful pooches and coffee-seeking visitors on their way to the Grand Canyon. Although the menu is entirely vegetarian and has plenty of vegan options, carnivores can still delight in the offers of whimsical pastries and decadent coffees.

The line often stretches out the door, but the food and coffee is worth the wait. You can take home beans to brew in your home coffee maker or take the plunge and buy a Macy’s cup to bring back. If you bring your own mug or cup, they’ll give you 25 cents off your beverage. Ask for the special — a Macy’s take on a mocha — for a great pick-meup without the jitters.

7. Cultured New to the Flagstaff scene, Cultured fills a unique niche, combining self-serve frozen yogurt with an espresso bar. Comfy couches fill an inviting atmosphere, and an upstairs loft provides stunning views of the San Francisco

Peaks. Unique art by Flagstaff locals and live music complement the engaging feel of Cultured.

They have a slew of events, ranging from open mic nights to mommy-child storytime by the fireplace to group rides, so whether you want to adventure around town or relax and kick back, Cultured provides an inviting atmosphere.

8. Heritage Square Summer nights on the Square embody Flagstaff: music, art and family fun. Wednesdays have free salsa and dance lessons from 6-8 p.m., Thursdays have live music from 5-7 p.m., Fridays have engaging art from 6-8 p.m. and Saturdays host the revered Movies on the Square, from 4 p.m. until show’s end. During weekdays and daytime hours, the Square is often abuzz with different events and performers, or can be a great place to sit and enjoy watching people pass by.

Heritage Square is the heart of downtown where you can expect to see people hula-hooping tire tractors, families reclining on sun-soaked steps or doggie obedience school. Grab a snack from one of the many surrounding restaurants and settle in for an enjoyable experience.

9. Mother Road Brewery and Tap Room Microbreweries are a seemingly new trend across the nation, but Mother Road is kicking it old school in homage to Route 66. Located in the Milum Building, the Brewery brews craft beers perfect to enjoy while reminiscing about the good old days.

Though they don’t serve food, they encourage you to bring your own or order in from one of the surrounding restaurants. The staff is more than happy to discuss the brewing process with patrons, and often hosts live music events.

10. Fat Olives If cheap, greasy pizza is what you’re after, look elsewhere. Started by award-winning chef John Conley (of Salsa Brava, another Flagstaff fave), Fat Olives serves thincrust, Neapolitan-style pizzas cooked to perfection for 90 seconds in an oven all the way from Italy. They hand stretch their cheese, use San Marzano tomatoes in their sauce and proof their dough for more than 24 hours—crafting pizza both die-hard foodies and those just looking for a great slice can enjoy.

Those with a sweet tooth can drool over the Smores pizza, a dessert concoction sure to make your doctor cringe.

Flagstaff community market set to return

lagstaff ’s annual community market is back. Beginning May 26, every Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon, the farmers of the surrounding Flagstaff area will sell their goods to the public.

Various vendors sell their goods to people who enjoy eat‑ ing organic foods not infused with hormones or shipped half‑ way around the globe before reaching the dinner table. The festivities begin bright and early at 8 a.m. in the City Hall west parking lot on the corner of North Sitgreaves Street and Route 66.

Rain or shine, people gather outside to converse and shop for groceries. The regulars usually become friendly with the vendors as well and it’s a great way to ask questions about how each vendor grows their food and prepare their personal reci‑ pes.

If you are in Flagstaff for the summer and hope to get out of the house, visit the community market. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s a perfect way to connect with other Flagstaff residents.

Pizzicleta offers Italian feel

f you are looking for a fresh place to grab a slice, ride your bicicletta down to Pizzicleta.

A small room includes a tiny cooking area and a long table where most guests sit next to strangers. The table is a bit crammed but portrays a true Italian feel; you literally rub elbows with the people to your left and right in this familystyle dining area.

Pizzicleta is located off Phoenix Avenue next to Mother Road Brewing Company and has a simple menu. Wines, beer and pizza are the main options.

The pizza strives to mimic the style of pizza served in Naples, Italy and does just that. Individual pizzas allow for people to share with one another and try different toppings.

The restaurant is within walking distance to campus and downtown Flagstaff.

The only downside to this hip restaurant is the lack of privacy between guests and a menu that includes Italian words most Americans have never heard of, let alone can pronounce correctly. Even with those drawbacks, the pizza is tasty and the atmosphere can attract those who enjoy meeting new people and do not get claustrophobic easily.

Prices are a bit high, but the quality and size of the pizzas make up for the expense.

It is one of those places that people can stop in while they are exploring the city.

If you are walking around downtown or want to take bike ride outside, you may want to consider stopping at Pizzicleta.

Looking for fun under 21

ollege is a time to explore, try new things and have fresh starts with fresh faces, but coming into the adult world of college at a ripe age, three years under the legal drinking limit, limits options in a college bar town. Here is a list of places and activities for those looking for good times that can still be enjoyed under the age one of 21. You can get out there and start making memories without waiting for the bars.

Grand Canyon

It’s big. I’s grand. People come from every corner of the globe to check it out, and it’s a hop, skip and a jump north from campus.

This “Eighth Wonder of the World” is a spectacle to behold and a perfect escape from college life for a morning or afternoon.

Hike, hike, hike

Many of you are probably coming to Flagstaff for the scenery, and who could blame you? Being surrounded by incredible peaks and valleys is one of the greatest attractions to this city. Hit one of the hundreds of trails around the San Francisco Peaks, Mount Elden or any of the surrounding peaks and canyons, recommended to rookie and adept hikers alike.

Dance, dance, dance

Are you the type of person who just loves to move their body to the music? Flagstaff has a cure for your case of the boogie fever at several locations around Flagstaff for all of your dancing needs and styles. From swing dancing at Galaxy Diner to free lessons on Heritage Square to salsa dancing at the Mad Italian, if you want to learn or dance a specific style, there is a place to fulfill that prescription.

First Friday Art Walk

Come downtown on every first Friday of the month to watch downtown Flagstaff spring to life and check out the local art.

This is a great way to spend a night out on the town and support Flagstaff’s art scene, so mark your calendars and make sure to walk yourself to the Art Walk.

The Hive

This local music venue, located on South Beaver Street, will never be one to turn away someone looking to rock. The Hive opens their doors to all ages, and gives the Flagstaff and surrounding Arizona music scene a chance to spread their wings. If you love good music and cheap show prices, you

and the Hive should highly consider forming a relationship — a strictly platonic relationship, of course.

Oak Creek Canyon

What better way to cool off, as the heat waves come rolling in, than to spend an afternoon out by the creek? This creek, down in the canyon heading to Sedona from Flagstaff, is a hot spot for students and a real joy to check out year round.

Fire Creek Coffee Company Poetry Slam and Open Mic Night

Do you like coffee? How about poetry? If you like both, check out Fire Creek Coffee Company. Located in downtown Flagstaff, this shop offers open mic nights and slam or beat poetry nights on the regular, so if you ever want to spend the night out on the town, but have the urge to let out your poetic side ­­­‑ or just like to snap your fingers a lot - check out this establishment. They also hold weekly open mic nights where guests are welcome to sing, play an instrument or tell a few jokes.

Lake Mary & Mormon Lake

Lakes are a constant source for entertainment; that’s not really something that changes. Two lakes in the immediate vicinity are Lake Mary and Mormon Lake, both with their own aspects of beauty. If they aren’t already, lakes are definitely something that should be a top on your to-see list.

Lava Tubes

This local fave is a river cave formed by molten lava roughly 700,000 years ago that you can climb through and explore. Make sure you bring a flashlight and a jacket, because it gets pretty dark without a light source for about a mile into the cave, and can reach temperatures as low as 42 degrees, even in summer.

Flagstaff is a destination feeding all of your hobbies, interests and passions. Knowing where to look is half the journey. Being under 21 does not sign you off to a life of boredom. Hit to the town and you’ll be sure to find a place that tickles your fancy.

In search of the Holy Grill: Cleaning out Granny’s Closet

very journey starts with a beginning, and in my search for the holy grill of burgers, I figured I’d start off on the right foot and follow the trail of my peers. Granny’s Closet is a well-known and beloved establishment by the NAU student body, located on the outskirts of campus. Their reputation was enough to raise an eyebrow, but what really KNIGHT OF pointed me in their direction DA BURGER was the title they boasted: “The best burger in Flagstaff, voted by NAU students.” Could this be true? Did my fellow classmates stumble upon the king of burgers before the search had begun?

The only way to find out if this journey would come to a premature conclusion was to tackle the acclaimed sandwich myself.

I entered the establishment with mixed expectations. Knowing that they revere themselves as a well-respected bar and grill, I wasn’t sure that their burgers alone would be held up to the standards I was particularly in search of. The atmosphere was odd, to say the least, but surprisingly

But, as I stared at my now halfdressed plate of French fries, I realized that the moment had passed without leaving any sort of lasting impression.

The savory and full taste of the burger was well appreciated, and I could understand that if you wanted a tasty patty, you would not be disappointed by good ol’ Granny, but other than perhaps a couple skeletons and fantastic wings, a burger destined for true greatness would not be found in this closet.

If you’re a burger lover who wants to find a treat that satisfies and keeps your budget in the single digits, Granny’s got your number. At a modest price of $8.23, you can walk away from Granny’s Closet knowing that your money was well spent.

This eatery, although not the home of the Holy Grill, provides you with home-style cooking that can be put up to the test of your grandmother’s recipes, and don’t worry; she doesn’t expect you to call on her birthday either.

Behind the scenes of SUN Entertainment

Nestled in a corner next to the Fieldhouse is where SUN Entertainment works to arrange a variety events.

Surprisingly, SUN Entertainment program coordinator Rachel Sizemore said the routine isn't much different whether it's for a relatively unknown student playing an acoustic set in the Union or a big-name headliner playing at the Fieldhouse.

“The process is pretty much the same for all SUN Entertainment performers we bring to campus, from a Noon Tunes performer to a headliner like Macklemore,” Sizemore said.

The way SUN Entertainment plans out events rarely changes between semesters. A calendar is made for the upcoming semester before returning events like Family Weekend and Homecoming are discussed and

decided upon. From there, the SUN Entertainment team brainstorms the concerts and special events they are known for, along with smaller activities like AfterHours and Noon Tunes.

The preliminary list of potential performers is made and the students begin contacting them. After that, details like availability, pricing, date and insurance are worked out, contracts are signed and soon enough the artist shows up to perform for the NAU students.

Like its name suggests, SUN Entertainment is primarily driven by the student employees. The success of SUN Entertainment's events can partially be attributed to the fact that students are the ones often coming up with the ideas; SUN Entertainment staffer or not, if a student wants to do or see something, there is a good chance other students feel the same.

“We have an office full of students that work hard to come up with unique and new ideas,” Sizemore said. “They

work hard, long, late hours to bring the students of NAU numerous events each semester.”

SUN Entertainment crew coordinator Lexy Yamamoto is one of those students working to bring NAU entertainment. As crew coordinator, Yamamoto schedules crews for events, oversees her fellow student workers and keeps track of prizes for popular AfterHours events like the poker tournament and trivia nights, among other tasks. For Yamamoto, putting on an event is both a smooth and enjoyable process.

“After loading in all of the equipment, putting it together and helping organize all the little details, it's worth watching the entire concert come together,” Yamamoto said.

Yamamoto also enjoys her time with SUN Entertainment outside of putting on the events, praising the creative and open environment of the company.

“SUN Entertainment gives me room to include new and innovative ideas,” Yamamoto said. “I'm always trying to improve my position, and I feel that my opinions are always considered.”

SUN Entertainment puts an emphasis on appealing to all kinds of students when arranging events for NAU's diverse campus. Everyone has different tastes in music, but some people may prefer movies to concerts entirely, or just want to play trivia a couple times a month.

“Our main goal is to bring a variety of events that offer something for everyone,” Sizemore said. “Obviously, with such a diverse campus, it would be hard to find an event that every single student on campus would want to see.”

SUN Entertainment's relationship with artists is a two-way street. Sometimes they are contacted by agents about a venue when performers are

passing through Flagstaff, and other times, SUN Entertainment reaches out to particular artists they want to bring to NAU. Generally, the performers will accept if they are available and the offer is reasonable to them, but sometimes offers are turned down. Some of the reasons include the band or performer simply refusing to play college events, or commitments that prevent the performer or the whole band from being able to make the date.

“There are many reasons an offer gets turned down,” Sizemore said. “But mostly if it works scheduling and money-wise, a band or performer will accept, as that is their job and without accepting dates, they aren’t getting paid.”

When all is said and done, Sizemore insists any sort of event is owed to SUN Entertainment's student staff.

Instead of attending the concerts, they work behind the scenes to make sure the events go as planned and their peers have an enjoyable time.

Oscar of Oscar’s keeps it fresh

here is no short supply of Mexican food in Flagstaff. With restaurants such as El Capitan, Salsa Brava and Ralberto’s, you can find a burrito, quesadilla or enchilada on nearly every corner.

Nestled in a small hole-in-the-wall store in front next to Bookmans is a hidden gem of Flagstaff. Oscar’s Burritos Fiesta — known fondly as just Burritos Fiesta to its regulars — has what many would say is the best Mexican food in Flagstaff. The “Best Quesadilla” awards are plastered on the walls.

Founded 13 years ago, Burritos Fiesta has provided fresh and authentic Mexican food to Flagstaff residents and passersbys, and continues to thrive despite the fickle economy and strong competition. Owner Oscar Villalobos attributes his success to his experience in the food industry.

“If it wasn’t for my experience, I wouldn’t be here today,” Villalobos said, a veteran of the food industry of more than 30 years.

Villalobos was born in Chihuahua, Mexico to a family of seven children.

“I come from dirt,” Villalobos said. “There were times when my mom was having a hard time to find one dime to buy a loaf of bread.”

Villalobos immigrated to the U.S. when he was 18 years old and became a dishwasher — the first job that led him on the path to his dream.

Experience, however, was not the only thing that helped Villalobos get where he is today. A man of many metaphors, Villalobos paints a vivid picture of what life is like as a small business owner.

“It’s like you’re driving a car and you get a flat tire,” Villalobos said. “You don’t have a spare and you’re going to have to walk to find help. It’s the same, being an owner of a small business.”

According to Villalobos, self-reliance is one of his many keys to success.

“Don’t ever expect somebody to help. Oscar helps Oscar,” Villalobos said.

By following his business philosophy — “I always play the luck, never play it smart” — Burritos Fiesta fills the hungry bellies of Flagstaff.

Using old recipes given to him by his grandmothers, and continuing to use quality ingredients despite the price, Burritos Fiesta has a unique edge in a town with countless Mexican food restaurants.

“I like to keep everything fresh, fresh, fresh,” Villalobos said.

“Every time I go there, sometimes weekly, it tastes just as good as the first time. With the prices, I can afford to eat there often,” said Flagstaff resident and Burritos Fiesta patron Dan Rice.

One look at Villalobos and you can tell he is a family man.

Likewise, one look at Burritos Fiesta, and you can tell it is a family restaurant. Refusing to serve alcohol, the atmosphere at Burritos Fiesta has garnered Villalobos many compliments.

“When you walk in here with your kids, you don’t have to worry that there will be two drunks at the next table,” Villalobos said.

Villalobos is also a man of strong faith. Burritos Fiesta is one of the few businesses closed on Sundays.

“I share [Sunday] with my Lord,” Villalobos said.

In his eyes, Sunday is a day to spend with family and a day to give employees a break. Villalobos does not mind any lost income

“When you die, you don’t take your money with you. Enjoy life,” Villalobos said.

Among the many philosophies of Villalobos is a simple one: respect everyone.

“I always look at everybody as an equal,” Villalobos said. “I always respect everyone. Five years old or 100 years old — same respect.”

This philosophy is also apparent in his employees.

“The girl who took my order was really friendly,” said Khrista Coyner, an NAU student whose first Burritos Fiesta experience she described as excellent.

It doesn’t matter what brings you to Oscar’s Burritos Fiesta.

Whether you are following the enticing aroma wafting from the kitchen or a hungry traveler that will settle for anything, Villalobos and his employees treats everyone the same: like family.

Tips for living vegan or vegetarian on campus

I

ncreasing amounts of students at NAU prefer to eat a meal that does not contain animal products, and if you experience the perpetual feeling of being doubled over in pain, otherwise known as Celiac disease, don’t despair. Many students share in this same dilemma; it’s hard to find time to balance healthy eating and neverending piles of homework and exams. The dining options on NAU’s campus provide alternatives for those with dietary restrictions.

Because of these resourcAMANDA es, a student’s diet doesn’t have HORNER to consist of just apples stolen from the Hot Spot the previous day. The availability of unique food options helps prevent those with dietary restrictions from being questioned about what they eat and how they manage.

Garden Toss, located in the University

Union Point, is a mecca for any student with a special diet — it’s easy to build your own salad absolutely cruelty-free and gluten-free without any problem.

Cobrizo, a Mexican-style restaurant similar to Chipotle, has the most available as far as vegan options. Any vegetarian taco, burrito or salad can be made vegan by asking them to hold the cheese, sour cream and getting black beans instead of pinto beans. Feel free to add guacamole, too. The naked burrito bowl is perfect for a wheat-free diet.

Star Ginger, located in the University Union Point, has vegan-friendly tofu & veggies banh mi, or the vegetarian pho noodle bowl.

The transfer special at Pizza Hut can be made vegetarian by getting the cheese pizza.

Unfortunately, the bagels at Einstein’s Bagels are not vegan or gluten-free. However, Einstein’s is great for vegetarians. All of their reduced-fat schmears are vegetarian, mak-

ing it easy to use your transfers there. Other vegetarian options on the menu include the spinach, mushroom, Swiss and egg sandwich, or the broccoli cheese soup. The only vegan option at Einstein’s is the fruit cup. If you’re bummed about your breakfast options, don’t panic yet — Starbucks has vegan bagel options. Because it is doubtful life as an undergraduate will allow time for brewing your own coffee, it’s important to note that many lattes can be vegan if you substitute the milk for soy milk, including the hazelnut, cinnamon dolce (without the cinnamon topping), vanilla or peppermint— to name a few. Mocha is also vegan-friendly.

Lunch at the Hot Spot is made simple by Wild Mushroom, a vegetarian serving station, with options including eggplant parmesan and caramelized root vegetables on Monday, or rigatoni pasta on Wednesday — just to name a few. The Flying Star Diner has a veggie burger as a lunch option — make it

vegan or gluten-free by asking them to hold the bun and they’ll be happy to do so. Glutenfree options also include vegetarian lentil and spinach soup and American bounty vegetable soup — both of which have plenty of necessary nutrients.

On south campus, the Peaks Grill offers a veggie burger as a transfer special. The Flagstaff melt sandwich doesn’t have meat on it either, making it a viable vegetarian candidate. Taqueria Chiquita at the du Bois Center (DuB) also has a vegetarian burrito transfer option that can be made vegan by requesting it without cheese or sour cream.

Don’t be afraid to special order something so that it accommodates your needs.

After all, NAU is your school and you pay to be here. Finding meals to suit your body around campus is simple if you know where to look. Certainly, students should never have to sacrifice nutrition in order to eat a balanced diet.

Ethan Maurice bikes cross-country for a cause

E

than Maurice credits his life to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH). At three years old, he was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder called essential thrombocytosis (ET), and also has meningoencephalitis, both of which required him to spend extensive amounts of time in PCH. “They saved my life,” Maurice said.

ET is characterized by noticeably high concentrations of platelets in the blood that dramatically increase chances of blood clotting and death. Because of his diagnosis, Maurice spent much of his life as a PCH patient, where he developed a unique rapport with his physicians and support system there. Although he technically no longer has ET, he still interacts with his doctors at PCH. Despite challenges with ET, meningoencephalitis and seizures, Maurice is now thriving at NAU, something he never thought he would be able to do. He studies biomedical science, something the doctors he interacted with at PCH inspired him to do.

“It completely changed the direction of my life. I didn’t really think about going into the medical field at all, but after all that, I feel like I can relate to patients so well,” Maurice said. “It’ll give me so much satisfaction to help people that were in my situation previously.”

Because of how much PCH impacted him, Maurice decided to integrate his desire to ride across the country with the intention of raising money and awareness for PCH. “I want to give back to the hospital and this is the best way I can think of doing it,” Maurice said.

Although the idea to ride his bike across the country had been on the back of his mind for a while, using it as a fundraiser for PCH brought his dreams to fruition.

“What really was the point that I realized I could actually do this was to raise money for PCH because it ties the whole thing together . . . it brings purpose to the ride,” Maurice said.

Maurice approached PCH in August 2012, and they were “very moved” by his story. As the beneficiaries of the ride, they also advocate Ethan Maurice will spend the summer cycling the Trans-America Trail with within his support system.

Outfitted with a bicycle and his brother Reid, Maurice is spending the summer before his senior year at NAU riding crosscountry on the Trans-America Trail to benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Their goal is to raise $42,330 for the hospital, which equates to approximately $10 per mile they ride.

The Trans-America Trail stretches from Yorktown, Va. to Astoria, Ore., complete with small towns, mountain passes and blowing headwinds. The Maurices plan to average 60 miles per day, camping along the way while raising money and support.

“I imagine we’ll hit 120 or 130 miles one day. If we have the wind blowing at our backs . . . we’re just cruising,” Maurice said.

Although they do not have a set itinerary, the pair plans to finish by mid-August in time for Reid to return to high school in Phoenix and Ethan to return to NAU. “We’re keeping it open; we’re going to enjoy it . . . It’s all open and I don’t want to limit it in any way,” Maurice said.

When reflecting on the experience and purpose behind the ride, Maurice hopes he can give inspiration to children in similar situation.

“It would have been really great for me to have that. When I first came out of that coma, I didn’t know where I would end up,” Maurice said. “There were some points where I lacked hope and it would have been great to have someone that I saw in my situation five years down the road and they were fully functional again, out there living again.”

Maurice is dedicated to PCH and being a role model to the patients there.

“I’ve recovered, and I want to be that example for the kids in the hospital,” Maurice said.

Maurice believes having PCH as a beneficiary for the ride will help him push through difficult parts of the ride.

“If I’m down, you know, I have something to pedal for; I have a reason; I have a purpose,” Maurice said. “I feel like I’ll be able to push through anything because I know a lot of kids will be watching and I’ll be out there for them.”

Flagstaff Nordic Center opens for summer fun

Visitors can rent bicycles to use on the more than 50 kilometers of trails.

“The trails are based off of our ski trails, so there’s easy, moderate, more difficult,” Wright said.

While mountain bikers use some of the trails, people are also taking advantage of them for trail running or walking, breathing in the fresh air.

“The woods are a great place to bike and see the true scenery of Flagstaff and the Nordic Center provides great trails, too,” Merrill said.

ith the summer weather starting to rise, more people are traveling to Flagstaff to get away from the heat.

The scenic view of Flagstaff is one of the biggest reasons people from the Phoenix metropolitan area come to Flagstaff, and the Flagstaff Nordic Center (FNC) is a perfect place to beat the heat and get away from the crowds, with a wide variety of summertime activities.

Denise Wright, an employee at FNC, is excited for the summer and the activities planned.

“We have a variety of folks. We have a lot of locals that come out, a lot of people from the

Valley, and then we get a lot of people from all over,” Wright said.

People are traveling from all over to see the sights the FNC has to offer.

“We’ve had people from Colorado, California, New York, Oregon, Minnesota,” Wright said.

To the trails With the onsite facilities, cabins and yurts, many people stay at the center to get an experience they can only experience in the cool mountain pines.

Yurts and cabins are secluded from the road, so guests get the experience to surround themselves with nature and breathe in the fresh air scented with pine.

The trails around the yurts are used for cross-country skiing in the winter, but in the summer are used for hiking and mountain biking.

“We have about 50 kilometers of trails; they are basically our ski and snowshoe trails and we incorporate those. So, it’s about four square miles that we have, and our summer trails; there’s no fee in the summer, so they’re open to the public,” Wright said.

Jaclyn Merrill, an NAU alum with a degree in public relations, said she loves being outside and biking through the woods.

“Because the weather is so nice, it’s easier to be outside and enjoy all that Flagstaff has to offer. Now that I’m done with school, I have more time to spend outdoors,” Merrill said.

Through the summer, the FNC hosts various events for outdoor enthusiasts and those just looking for a good time.

For runners looking to crank it up a notch, the Gaspin’ in the Aspen Summer Woods Run kicks off the Flagstaff Mountain Trail Racing Series on June 15.

This race, 100 percent on trails, raises funds and awareness for the aspen grove enclosures near the San Francisco Peaks.

For biking enthusiasts, the center will host the second annual Bear Jaw Groove Mountain Bike Race and Music Festival on Sept. 7. The first 300 hundred bikers ride 18 laps, while guests can enjoy free music, bounce houses, a beer garden for everyone 21 and over and a barbeque.

“We have a whole bunch of music at our bike race, and that is open for everyone,” Wright said.

To wrap up the summer outdoor season, the center will host the Flagstaff Marathon, which takes competitors through the woods on this 100 percent off-road race. The race is not only a marathon; there is also a half marathon and 10K. “We have a 10K and a 5K, and a 1K for children, so there’s something for everyone,” Wright said.

The Flagstaff Marathon, held on Sept. 21, is a fundraiser for North Country Healthcare, a healthcare provider for people in Northern Arizona on a sliding fee scale to anyone who needs it.

With the summer weather why not find an excuse to spend the day outside, taking in all that Flagstaff Nordic Center has to offer.

While a pool may not be readily accessible for many residents of northern Arizona, there are plenty of creeks and water holes within close distance of Flagstaff to visit for day trips.

the hot springs are still there. The downside? It is almost a mile hike on a trail and then across the river — almost waist deep — to get to this secluded spot. However, the mineral blue water and warm springs make it a great place to watch the stars.

Fossil Creek

Accessibility: Moderate to difficult Nestled between Strawberry and Camp Verde, Fossil Creek is another popular spot to laze the day away along the side of the river. Designated a National Wild and Scenic River, this creek pumps out 20,000 gallons a minute, which makes for fun currents and mini waterfalls. It is also home to hiking, horse trails and fishing spots. The downside? The rough, windy and steep road leading to the river is often closed because of traffic. However, the long drive means it is more removed from civilization and more nature can be enjoyed. Visit fs.usda.gov for more information.

Camp Verde Hot Springs

Accessibility: Moderate to difficult If you’re willing to go a little further and are interested in history, then the hot springs are a great place to visit. Along the same road as Fossil Creek, the hot springs were once the location of a hotel in the 1920s. Due to the relative difficulty of getting to the location and an unfortunate fire, it was shut down in 1958, but

The more adventurous water-seekers can find a home at Clear Creek. Just outside of Camp Verde and home to many cliffs for jumping, Clear Creek cuts into a deep canyon. In fact, in some places the only way to get into the water is to leap from a cliff that starts at eight-feet high.

The downside? During monsoon season, the roads can be fairly dangerous to travel on. However, weather reports and campgrounds ensure that you can take measure to prevent being stranded. Visit fs.usda. gov for more information.

Wet Beaver Creek

Accessibility: Easy to moderate With its fair share of bugs, crawfish, and minnows, Beaver Creek is home to swimming wildlife as much as it is to the humans that visit there. Closer to Sedona than Camp Verde, this creek hosts red rocks as well as shady trees and cliffs to jump from. Whether you hike up or stick closer to the ground, Beaver Creek offers plenty of places for lounging or adventure.

The downside? The Bell — Beaver Creek’s main cliff-jumping point — is a long hike up the river. However, the view from the top is quite spectacular. Visit fs.usda.gov for more information.

Flagstaff might not boast many wild and raging rivers, but anyone with access to a car is within reach of cool spots to beat the summer heat. Whether it’s an out of the way wading pool or an exciting cliff jump, there are plenty of creeks to choose from.

Perhaps one of the most well known spots for water fun in the state, Slide Rock is a section of Oak Creek. Located off Highway 89A, Slide Rock is filled with the red rocks for which the town is famous. There are plenty of small riffles to ride down with or without a tube, and the rocks are fantastic for sunbathing on. The downside? There is a $20 parking fee, and the lot often fills quickly on hot summer weekends. Because of high visitation, the later it gets in the summer, the dirtier the water gets. A true European experience: soccer team travels, plays in Spain

onths of difficult practices and fundraising for a trip to Spain more than paid off for NAU’s women’s soccer team.

They returned with three victories and a refreshed sense of team camaraderie.

Head coach Andre Luciano and the team left for the long trek to Spain promptly after finals for their ten-day trip.

“Going overseas something we try to do every four years,” Luciano said.

The trip was completely funded by the team, and provided the women with many opportunities for growth.

The woman were placed in a variety of new challenges they had never before faced, allowing them to grow mentally, emotionally and physically for the upcoming fall season after playing some of Europe’s top teams.

The team spent ten days in each other’s company, fostering a new sense of collaboration. Although busy with matches, there was still time to experience the culture of Spain.

They visited beaches, explored various coastal cities and stayed in Barcelona, taking in the excitement of the history and architecture.

All this, combined with warm-ups, training and matches, made for immense exhaustion, but helped improved the team’s confidence.

“It gave them the chance to deal with adversity, practice different styles of play and made the team even closer,” Luciano said.

The differences in the atmosphere while playing in Spain were immense.

According to Elinor Priest, a senior forward, the sporting environment in Spain is extremely different than that in the United States.

“There were half a million people in the streets. It was like a football game here,” Priest said.

Though the team faced challenges from “being on the go all day,” according to Priest, playing against amateur teams provided valuable experiences to transfer to their upcoming season.

Both Priest and Luciano mentioned the match against FC Barcelona, one of Spain’s most prestigious teams, as a trip highlight and challenge.

“The game almost didn’t happen due to the weather,” Luciano said.

Despite an FC Barcelona victory, the match provided a tremendous growing experience.

“We played against some of their amateur teams and it was different to see how good some of their younger players were,” Priest said.

The team’s chemistry helped them get through the tough times in the trip, especially during the FC Barcelona match.

“They were the team we were most excited to play,” Priest said. “It almost got rained out because there was half an inch of water on the ground.”

The experience was invaluable for the players in terms of their team play and excitement for the upcoming fall season.

With the women placed into situations with so much adversity, the team looks forward to handling anything that comes their way this season — and the women are looking forward to great matches this fall.

OutdoorsLife Volleyball coach retires, hunt to fill position

A

fter five years as the head coach of the NAU women’s volleyball team, Craig Choate retired on May 13.

During his first season with the volleyball team, they finished 15–10, the program’s first winning record in seven years. In the 2012 season, Choate led the team to a 24–7 record.

Many of Choate’s players earned Big Sky All-Academic honors and placed on the Big Sky All-Academic Team.

With his retirement, NAU immediately began the search for a new coach, under the direction of Lisa Campos, vice president for intercollegiate athletics. Keep an eye out in upcoming issues for more information about the search and the achievements of Choate and the volleyball team.

Intramurals to continue through summer

AU intramural sports had another exciting year, but just because the school year is over doesn’t mean intramurals are.

NAU plans to hold some intramural leagues through the summer.

Only two sports will be offered, but will have two separate seasons — indoor soccer will be one option and 5-on-5 basketball is the other.

Both sports begin June 3 and will run through June 28. The second season begins July 14 and will end on Aug. 9.

All regular intramural sports will continue their seasons starting next fall.

Chopping to the top: STIHL TIMBERSPORTS

D

avid Goueveia cut his way into a niche at NAU quite nicely.

He graduated in May with a degree in forestry and spent his time during his undergraduate years working in Centennial Forest and competing on the NAU logging sports team.

“I loved it,” Goueveia. “I just fit so well.”

His dedication to the logging sports and the realm of forestry paid off both athletically and academically.

His achievements in the classroom landed him a forestry job in the Dakotas, and his athletic dedication helped him win the 2013 Collegiate Western Qualifier for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series.

Because of this placement, he qualified to compete in the championship games against five other competitors.

The winner will be able to compete in the 2014 STIHL TIMBERSPORTSmProfessional Series and go to Germany to participate with the International Rookie Team at the World Championship.

Goueveia is staying focused on the upcoming event and not getting ahead of himself.

“I’m just training as hard as I can to do as best as I can,” Goueveia said.

The competition is June 9 in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. at the Great Smoky Mountain Lumberjack Feud Competitors take part in various events based on traditional logging actions.

These lumberjack disciplines include events such as the standing block chop, single buck, stock saw and underhand chop.

“It’s just training for life,” Goueveia said.

rab a line and a pole and take a back road out of town for a little while. Lake Mary is one of the closest lakes to NAU, and although it is not the most pristine lake, the sport of fishing is alive and well at this mountain reservoir.

The muddy waters of Lake Mary are stocked with northern pike, yellow perch, bluegill, yellow bass, large mouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, crappie and trout. The lake is divided into two sections: Upper Lake Mary and Lower Lake Mary. Lower Lake Mary is usually dried up by the middle of summer, but Upper Lake Mary stays at a decent depth, although it has been low for the past few years due to a lack of precipitation.

The Arizona Game and Fish stocked 20,000 rainbow trout during the spring in Lower Lake Mary and the fishing has been extremely successful.

“The folks that are catching [trout] are the ones that are using lures or flies,” said Chuck Benedict, a fisheries biologist for the Arizona Game and Fish.

Using lures or flies is typically more successful than using bait because stocked fish are fed regularly during their time in the fisheries so they do not know what to look for in their new environment. The shiny, colorful lures attract their attention and they will usually bite.

Northern pike are an invasive species that entered Lake Mary a few decades ago and prey on the trout the Game and Fish stock.

“Each rainbow trout we stock runs from a buck to a buck fifty,” Benedict said. “So, if we’re stocking 50,000 and the [northern pike are] eating 30,000, we are paying about $30,000 dollars for those fish to have something to eat.”

Because of Lower Lake Mary’s isolation, the pike can’t reach this area to feed on the trout. The number of trout stocked depends on the water level, with up to 100,000 in one year.

Benedict mentioned there are world-record northern pike in Upper Lake Mary, and he recommends fly-fishing as the best mechanism to catch these that can weigh more than 20 pounds.

“If you want to fish for bluegill or crappie, wait [until June],” Benedict said. “They like warmer waters than the trout.”

Lyle Bolton is a local fisherman who lives about 50 miles away from Lake Mary.

“I caught two walleye that I’m going to take home and filet and one northern [pike],” Bolton said. “I used a perch colored crankbait.”

Bolton usually just trolls the lake, and he caught fish on the east side of the narrows. He checks the forecast before heading out to make sure the wind is not too intense, and during the summer he comes out to Lake Mary a few times a week to fish.

“I’ve caught some crappie here and some perch,” Bolton said. “It got real low last summer . . . my fishing hasn’t been as good since they put the trout in here again.”

Another local fisherman, Al Bircher, said he mostly catches walleye and northern pike, and he’s never caught a crappie in Lake Mary.

“Fishing wasn’t all that good today to be honest,” Bircher said, “I caught a couple northern pike.”

Bircher uses spinner baits for the northern pike and crankbaits for the walleye.

“I think what happens in this lake is the northern feed on the trout,” Bircher said.

Lower Lake Mary has a limit of six trout per person and a trout stamp is required on a Class A fishing license to fish Lower Lake Mary.
