Highlights of Police Beat

Aug. 6 At 2:23 a.m., a Northern Arizona University Police Department (NAUPD) officer was at the Hilltop Townhomes to check a residence for possible drug use.

The officer reported negative contact at the residence. While there, the officer made contact with another resident over excessive noise. The resident agreed to keep the noise down and no further action was taken.

Aug. 4 At 2:39 a.m., a subject reported they and other subjects with them had been assaulted by another group of individuals at McConnell Drive and San Francisco Street while walking home.

NAUPD, assisted by the Flagstaff Fire Department (FFD) and Guardian Medical Transport (GMT), arrived at the scene. The reporting subjects were checked for injuries and refused transport to the Flagstaff Medical Center (FMC). Three other subjects were arrested and booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility (CCDF) on charges of assault.

Aug. 2 At 4:11 a.m., staff of Peterson Hall called to report a subject had broken a door of the Biology Building.

NAUPD officers located the subject and booked him into CCDF on a count of criminal damage and for a warrant out of the Coconino County Sherriff’s Office (CCSO).

At 6:48 p.m., a resident of Hilltop Townhomes called NAUPD to report someone had entered her room and moved her property around.

Hilltop staff told officers none of their employees had

entered the room and they would make arrangements to have the locks of the residence changed.

July 31 At 3:08 p.m., a subject reported to NAUPD children were out front of the Wall Aquatic Center playing with a BB gun.

Upon investigation by officers, it was discovered that the BB gun was only a toy.

July 25 At 9:01 a.m., staff of the School of Behavioral Sciences (SBS) called to report they had found toy soldiers and photos of toy soldiers were found in the building.

Investigation discovered that the toy soldiers were placed as a prank on one of the faculty members of SBS. July 19 At 1:32 p.m., staff at the Wall Aquatic Center called NAUPD to report a child had been injured due to a fall down the stairs.

FFD, GMT and NAUPD officers responded to the scene and the child was transported to FMC for treatment.

At 3:06 p.m., an NAUPD officer was out with two subjects near the Drury Inn. One of the subjects had an outstanding warrant and was booked into CCDF. The other turned out to be a missing person. This subject’s family was called to advise them the subject had been located.

At 5:31 p.m., the officer was again out with the missing person subject, again near the Drury Inn. The officer advised the subject that assistance could be provided to allow the subject to check into the Econolodge.

After agreeing to meet at the Econolodge, the subject

failed to show up.

July 18 At 3:27 p.m. staff at the Mountain Jacks Kid’s Camp called in to report one of juveniles had made statements indicating child abuse.

As the allegations concerned incidents that occurred in Coconino County, the matter was turned over to the CCSO.

July 15 At 4:54 p.m., a call was received from the Health Services Building. When the NAUPD communication officer sought to engage the caller, no response was received.

Investigation into the call determined that the call was made by a child. Officers educated the family of the child regarding calling police and hanging-up.

July 11 At 12:28 a.m., an NAUPD officer reported being out with three subjects at Leroux Street and Birch Avenue.

One of the subjects was booked into CCDF for one count of providing liquor to juveniles and for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The two juvenile subjects were deferred for being minors with liquor in the body. Their parents were called and the children turned over to their custody.

July 9 At 11:23 p.m. NAUPD received a request from FPD for assistance. The request involved a train that was held up due to a subject on the tracks.

When officers arrived on the scene they were able to locate a subject “near the tracks, but not on them.”

No further action was needed.

T

he walls of the Rio de Flag canyon that cuts through the western border of the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) have the appearance of being so artfully man-made that they may be assumed to be formed by nature, which, in fact they are.

This canyon was to have been part of an ethnobotany walk conducted as part of the 64th Annual Navajo Festival of Arts and Culture held by MNA August 3 and 4. However, due to recent rains, the canyon was inundated with mosquitos.

It was for this reason that the walk was confined to the trail above the canyon.

Theresa Boone Shuler, who learned about Navajo uses of regional plants from her herbalist father, has been leading these walks for 10 years. She was able to give a broad insight on this subject even without descending into the canyon.

The many uses of the sumac, or skunk bush, were noted. The berries can be eaten, made into a lemonade type beverage or used to flavor cornmeal. The branches are

also used in the making of the traditional Navajo wedding basket.

Also learned on the walk was that plants have three names: the ceremonial name; the name describing what the plant looks like, such as the fact that the wild gardenia is called the five-fingered one due to its five petals; and, plants also have a sacred name which is known only to medicine men and healers.

The festival supports what the Navajo call “hozho”— living a happy and wise long life, in balance and harmony with the earth and sky.

Entering at the end of a talk given by anthropologist Klara Kelly and Navajo cultural expert Harris Francis titled “The Sacred Dine Landscape,” visitors could listen to a discussion among panelists and the audience about how to teach Navajo youth to balance American culture and education with traditional ways, both sacred and secular.

The festival also boasted five Churro sheep, which delighted the young visitors.

Also present were Navajo artists displaying everything from jewelry, paintings, sculpture, plus weaving and sand painting demonstrations.

There was live music under the Heritage Insights Tent featuring flautist Aaron White, Clarence Clearwater and Grammy nominated artist Radmilla Cody with Darrin Yazzie among others.

On Aug. 2, the first night of the festival, local artists were judged and awarded for pottery, weaving, jewelrymaking and other traditional artwork.

It would be impossible in this short piece to catalogue all the rest that the festival had to offer. It is an event one must experience.

MNA, which is dedicated to the study and interpretation of the Colorado Plateau, also hosts Celebraciónes de la Gente, which celebrates Hispanic culture in late October, the Zuni Festival in late May and the Hopi Festival on the Fourth of July weekend.

The Hopi Festival will be celebrating its 81st year, the Zuni Festival its 23rd and the Celebraciónes de la Gente its 10th this year.

Modern Grove joins the local community

n NAU alum, Nava Singam, is returning to Flagstaff, and he’s bringing a restaurant with him.

The restaurant, called Modern Grove, has been conceived to cultivate a sense of connection with the local community and the culture of the people in it. They’re offering artisan pizzas, locally roasted coffee for the morning commute to class and a small market for buying food goods.

The dining room is decorated in a contemporary fashion with hanging cylinder lights, polished cement floors and long, wooden family-style dining tables.

In the center of the restaurant, the eyes of customers are drawn to a giant chalkboard community calendar. The calendar, according to Singam, will be dedicated 80 percent to the community and just 20 percent to promoting Modern Grove specials and deals.

“We’re trying to fill the board with really important stuff to the community,” Singam said, while pointing to the board that will be filled as customers and the community come in and become familiar with the restaurant.

The process is simple, and anyone can get an event on the community calendar. Just pop in the store and talk to a manager — they’ll set you up.

friends or strangers in the neighborhood, planning the restaurant took special care to serve up a solid menu with an eye on local produce.

“Flag has a lot more to offer than the Valley in terms of produce,” said Chef Gio Osso, who developed the menu over the last several months. “We really want to keep it in the

family, so in the neighborhood.”

Osso is a transplant and much of his culinary training came from New Jersey and New York City. While in New York City, he popped around to different restaurants, working with well-known chefs like David Burke. He has also cooked in Italy.

These days, though, Osso does the teaching.

“I don’t yell; I’m no Gordon Ramsay,” Osso said about his behavior in the heat of the kitchen. “I’m at the point in my career that I want to teach. I want to see these young chefs grow.”

Modern Grove is giving them a chance to do just that, surrounded by a culture of community connectedness. “[We have a] very seasonal menu . A lot of variety,” said Ty Largo, public relations worker for Modern Grove. “It’s the kind of place that you can go in and grab a really great locally roasted coffee and then for lunch grab a really great salad on the go. In the evening you could come back and sip a glass of wine with a friend, have a plate of bruschetta or get a pizza to go.”

For now, the shape of the Modern Grove culture is unsure, and the owners don’t want to force anything specific.

They do know, however, that they want it to be fun.

“It’s a cool, funky collaborative space that you can share and sort of swap stories while you’re having a meal,” Largo said. “They’re letting the space and the people that will occupy it choose the path of where the restaurant will go.”

Grand Canyon artist now NAU Honors Artist in Residence

he Grand Canyon, at one of its deepest points, could fit nearly four Empire State Building’s from top to bottom.

Bruce Aiken, a local artist and New York City native, left the man-made canyons of Manhattan to paint and be inspired by the Grand Canyon, spending 33 years living in it at Roaring Springs.

“What a lot of people don’t know is that I came to Arizona specifically for the landscape,” Aiken said of his move westward. “I needed a big, powerful muse and I found that in Arizona.”

Aiken had visited northern Arizona while studying art at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and felt he was ready to work on his own and quit school there.

He moved, and set up a life on the North Kaibab trail where he spent his time painting and creating.

“I was ready to pull and be twisted by it,” Aiken said. “The world is big and beautiful, and there are lots of things in the world.”

One of the aspects of the big and beautiful world that captured Aiken’s artistic attention, which is best known for his powerful and colorful oil paintings of the Grand Canyon, has been the dynamic and changing surface of the Colorado River.

“There are a lot of things in painting the surface of the water alone,” Aiken said.

The differences are worthy of noting, and something that he spent ten years exploring with his paintbrush. The surface of a river may be reflective of the sky or the rock formations of the Grand Canyon. They may be opaque or clear. The intricacies are seen more clearly by an artist, Aiken said.

“Artists see things differently than the average person,” Aiken said. “That’s for sure.”

The different sight comes from an intense attention to detail that the average person with a paintbrush doesn’t have.

“It does not relax me at all. Painting is not relaxing,” Aiken said. “For me it’s incredibly intense. It’s creative energy flowing out.”

This creative energy and intensity that means that, for Aiken, the artistic flow must be personal to the artist.

“You’ve got to pull from a deep well in yourself,” Aiken said.

Today, Aiken lives in Flagstaff and works with NAU as the Honors Artist in Residence.

“Last year, NAU pulled me into their world, into their orbit,” Aiken said.

He was awarded an honorary doctorate degree for his work and contributes around campus in a variety of ways.

He does guest lecturing for independent departments from art, such as philosophy. He has developed field trips where students spend days in nature, painting and sketching. He also teaches

painting and gives public lectures.

The move to Flagstaff has fared well for Aiken, who said the town is a beautiful place with a lot to offer for an artist.

“The artists in this town, as a rule seem to have a reasonable amount of camaraderie and respect,” Aiken said. “And that turns into a strong bond.”

Books To Go On Your Summer Reading List

The Metamorphosis – Franz Kafka

It can be read as a story of man who turns into a cockroach, or as a work which examines one’s relationship to the self. Either way, depending on the edition, it’s about 50 pages long, and who doesn’t want to be able to brag about having read Kafka? It’s not too dense either, so it can be put down and began again where it was left off— great for those who have other commitments right before school starts.

A Good Man is Hard to Find and Other Stories - Flannery O’Connor O’Connor’s work is famous for being more or less flat out creepy, exploring issues such as religion and God, mortality and human nature. An anthology of her short stories including A Good Man is Hard to Find, The Life You Save May Be Your Own and Good Country People should be a staple in the average literary diet. Her notorious gothic style will have the reader in complete shock.

The Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro It’s a little dull at the beginning, but sticking to it for the first 30 or so pages will be worth it. An English butler recounts his time serving at Darlington Hall, which, granted, on the surface, is relatively lame. However, all is not as it appears. Moreover, the ending is the perfect blend of unbearably painful and absolute shock, and it makes the entire novel worth one’s time.

Have you finished the Game of Thrones series — the book versions, of course — and are you now looking for something new to read before the semester has you catching up on mathematics, and not George R.R. Martin? Here’s a summer reading list of books that will allow you to finish out the season strong. After all, winter is coming.

The Master and Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov Although Bulgakov’s masterpiece isn’t too lengthy, The Master and Margarita is worth the dedication and the expenditure of time it requires. The plot is compelling, and the Tiernan O’Connor translation is elegant and enrapturing. Also, the Devil’s best friend is a talking cat who walks standing up — and this is just one of many insane but purposeful elements of magic incorporated into this fast-paced novel.

Angela’s Ashes - Frank McCourt Another recommendation which isn’t too dense or too long; it is a fairly light read, but emotional and powerful. It is the memoirs of a man growing up in poverty in Ireland.

The author’s father leaves his children and their mother, Angela, behind, essentially starving, often unable to afford shoes. Despite the heaviness and sadness of the book, it is nonetheless uplifting—even funny at times.

Daughter of Fortune - Isabel Allende Daughter of Fortune is the tale of a young girl, Eliza Sommers, who sneaks onto a boat from Chile to the United States during the Gold Rush in California, to look for the love of her life. Although the plot is centered around a child, the book is not at all childish. Eliza is a powerful female hero, who can capture the fascinations and affections of anyone, of any age.

The plot is incredible, Eliza is inspiring and the historical aspect is enriching. It also addresses the important topic of freedom—not only independence, but freedom from desires, expectations and obsessions.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - Philip K. Dick This is the book that “Blade Runner” was based off. Even those who aren’t huge sci-fi fans should still give this book a try.

The Sound and the Fury - William Faulkner It’s hard to go wrong with such an important American classic. The story is about a family from the American South who are falling apart as a unit, losing wealth and power, as well as faith in God. Faulkner’s writing is unlike anything most writers have ever done, as well. Once again, it’s not too long but is thought provoking in terms of American traditions and society, which remains relevant today.

M. Butterfly - David Hwang A contemporary play about a Frenchman who falls in love with an Asian woman who is actually, secretly, a man. Of course, there’s much more to it than that — it explores race and sexuality, culture and the layers and disconnects surrounding all of these things. Although it’s great for reading, the film adaption is of course, worth watching, as it takes place from the Frenchman’s prison cell, as he recounts his memories from the past 20 years, when the scandalous affair began.

The Secret History - Donna Tartt

The story of a murder at an elite college in the Northeast United States is great to be read while one is in college, and an extremely gripping book. Although the premise of the plot may ring as cheesy or childish, the writing is phenomenal and the characters are fascinating —definitely one to add to the list.

In search of the Holy Grill: Meddling with Mama Burger

I

n my journey to find one burger we could hail as king in the city of Flagstaff, my relationship with these beatific beefcakes has blossomed into something more bittersweet than fruitful. Alliterations aside, my search for the holy grill grinded onwards to the local burger KNIGHT OF joint, Mama Burger, where DA BURGER I was optimistic that we might be taking a step in the right direction.

The blistering heat of summer took a turn towards the wet and dreary, as rainfall broke all-time reBRIAN cords in Flagstaff. The conREGAN stant canopy of gray evoked emotions that brought me back to what my own mama would refer to as a “pity party,” and for those of you who weren’t raised by a psychiatric nurse, you’d probably just call it a bad case of the rainy day blues. Regardless, the weather was a bummer, and nothing cures the blues like the most comforting of comfort foods: the

burger.

Not knowing what to expect in terms I moseyed on into Mama Burger with- of quality, I decided my best bet for finding out any sort of preconceived notions. This their poster child sandwich was through was my first time eating at this establish- the signature Mama Burger. This bun budment, so I was going in blind. The dining dy was pretty straight forward, wearing its areas were quaint, clean, with an outdoor Sunday bests, with all the works. Love and limits:

ost kids have enough to worry about as teenagers: puberty, high school, relationships and acne. However, each morning brings an entirely new set of problems to A, the genderless character in David Levithan’s novel Every Day. A becomes a different person once midnight hits and must live out one full day while using that person’s body.

This kind of life does not come with a handbook, and A must navigate through this strange existence while trying not to mess up the life of the girl or boy A inhabits for the day.

The challenge becomes much more difficult when A falls in love with Rhiannon and struggles to continue seeing her after no longer staying in her boyfriend’s body.

Every Day was selected to be NAU Reads book, which means that the entire 2013-2014 freshman class will be reading it at the same time.

The goal of NAU Reads is to foster unity among the first-year students by allowing them to share an experience of reading the same book. In their English classes, discussions will be fostered around A’s journey of self-discovery.

“It makes me very interested to see what conversations it will spark,” Levithan said. “For Every Day, there were two questions I wanted to answer. First, what would a person be like if he/she had no set body of life — meaning, no race, no gender, no parents, no set friends, no religion, no other social construction.

Who would we be, if we weren’t defined by our bodies and our backgrounds? And second, what would it be like to fall in love with someone

The taste, however, was not on par with the façade of godhood this meal managed to possess. A near perfect blend of texture, as the lettuce and grilled onions provided a satisfying crunch to the tender center of the Mama Burger, was the saving grace to an otherwise average sandwich. The burger alone could not hold a flame to some previous competitors for the throne, but keeping in mind the price being paid, this an eatery that I wouldn’t mind swinging by on occasion. Prices remaining in the range of single digits, Mama Burger knows how to speak to the paycheck of a college student, and whisper sweet nothings into its ear.

As a whole, the Mama Burger, fries and aesthetic appeal gave for a relatively enthused thumbs up. I will most definitely eat there again, but for the sake of a decent burger at a price that won’t cause a stroke before you fill up on greasy food, rather than my love for their product. The king was still out there, waiting to be recognized as such, and my search for the holy grill would not stop at Mama’s front door.

NAU Reads selection an insight into relationships and self

These are the sorts of questions that freshmen might find relevant as they make it through their first year.

For some, it is a chance to discover their racial, sexual or spiritual identity. For others, it is a chance to break away from certain relationships to form new ones.

Although they may not be able to relate directly to someone who has to live every day in a new body, there are some days where they might feel like completely different people. As finals hit, this feeling might get stronger and having a story like Every Day where A has no idea what is coming next could be a great source of relief.

Much like his character, Levithan wasn’t always certain about what would come next in his story.

“My process is to not really have

a process,” Levithan said. “I just write the story to figure out what the story is. With Every Day this was especially crucial—I didn’t want to overthink it, so just as A has no idea what the next day will bring, I had no idea what the next chapter would bring until I was there,” he said. “Every book comes from a different place. Strangely, Every Day is the only novel I’ve written where I can’t pinpoint the exact source. I just thought of the premise one day while walking to work— ’Hmm... waking up every day in a different body and a different life’— and then filed it away. Some time later, it could have been a year or two, I was wondering what to write next, and the idea resurfaced. I ran with it.”

Levithan is the author of more than 16 books. He was the co-author Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist with fellow young adult author, Rachel Cohn. He also co-authored the

novel Will Grayson, Will Grayson with John Green, author of Looking for Alaska. His personal website is www.davidlevithan.com.

We use terms like, “getting back into the swing of things,” or “the daily grind,” which are all just prettier ways for us to say, “This sucks.” This is why we’ve comprised a bucket list that showcases all the greatest elements and activities northern Arizona can still bring your way before you throw in THAT beach towel YOU’VE GOT RIGHT THERE IN YOUR HAND. Don’t drop it quite yet. I’m totally serious.

Sedona Red Rock State Park If you’re one of those lazy summer types who is not entirely on speaking terms with the sun, do yourself a favor and go to Sedona for a day. The Red Rocks State Park truly is a beautiful spectacle to behold that cannot be visually described through ink and paper alone. Any type of praises or recommendations from this natural piece of artwork would have to be formed on your own, and experienced in person, simply to give this place justice.

Oak Creek Canyon On your way to or from the magnificence found within Sedona, and the Red Rock State Park, taking a dip in Oak Creek Canyon is a great way to cool down and chill out. This is a hot spot for students and locals alike to bust out their swimming trunks and work on those horrific tan lines.

Historic Downtown’s First Friday Art Walk Use these bad boys to get a true taste of local Flagstaff ’s diversity, culture and talents before the school year

comes back with a vengeance and the fall semester students bleed back into the streets of Flag. These monthly art walks give an opportunity to absorb a bit of the community that Flagstaff locals cling to so dearly.

Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course This fun escape from your average sport complexes offers a tree top adventure course, which is an elevated obstacle course safely suspended between 15 to 50 feet off the ground, set in the ponderosa pine’s trees.

Some of the features of this course include suspended bridges, swings, slides, nets, zip lines and an aerial surf board. If you’re adventurous and looking for your summer to end with an adrenaline rush, check out Flagstaff Extreme.

Located past the Arizona Snowbowl, you’re just a hop, skip and a step away from a luscious afternoon of outdoorsy goodness.

Grand Canyon

You know I’ve just been poking and prodding around the bush when it comes to this one, because it feels like common sense. The weather is beautiful, and it’s time to stop staring at that big hole in the ground like it’s your fifth birthday party, which was assumedly Batman-themed, so it was pretty awe-inspiring. Delve into the trails of the seventh wonder of the world and truly immerse yourself into this incredible monument to northern Arizona’s brilliance.

Museum of Northern Arizona Remember, kids, education comes first, just not on this list. Check out the Museum of Northern Arizona to learn about the historic, anthropological and geographical and topographical transformations northern Arizona has experienced, dating back to ancient times. This museum also celebrates the diversity of northern Arizona with cultural festivals and program/tours emphasizing the importance of this land’s heritage and history.

Lava River Cave These tubes and tunnels under Flagstaff ’s soil were formed by lava over 700,000 years ago. Not only are these tunnels a great escape from the summer heat, but they are probably older than just about anything else you’ve crawled around in.

The summer chapters are reaching their last few pages, so why not take the initiative to write a fantastic ending? Living in Flagstaff, we are given many rich and wonderful activities to experience. Having such options and opportunities, your summer will be sure to end with a real bang.

egardless of tastes, music is a universal element constantly affecting and molding us as human beings. This is something, as a community, we can all connect over. Being such a relevant and continuous aspect of society, music venues have and will continue to be in demand, as long as people still want to kick out the jams. The city of Flagstaff is home to a wide variety of venues certain to have you rocking and rolling into tomorrow.

Orpheum: The Orpheum, located smack-dab downtown, provides shows with artists of varying styles and quality performance. It’s one of the few venues that labels themselves strictly as such and continue to manage a slew of dif-

ferent events such as Adult Prom, or other entertainers like comedy nights and drag shows.

The Hive: A venue showcasing local art and music. Located just south of the tracks by Historic Downtown Flagstaff, The Hive emphasizes the support of any and all artists trying to turn some heads.

Flag Brew: With great locally crafted brews and an ambiance of equally hearty quality, Flag Brew is a prime location for a beer with friends. Simply put, hosting a wide variety of musical performances from both local and touring bands is just icing on what is already a pretty awesome cake.

Monte Vista Cocktail Lounge: The Monte Vista is one of the oldest hotels in historic downtown Flagstaff, and a monument to the retro world we’ve long since

passed. The shows held in the cocktail lounge of the hotel are often softer than something you may find in the more DIY venues of Flagstaff. All shows are 21 and over, as they are located directly within the bar area.

Firecreek Coffee Company: Recently opened, “Firecreek Café” hit the ground running with sparks flying, as they started selling locally brewed beers and other beverages as an addition to the café. Featuring Flagstaff artists, poets, open mic nights and local bands, Firecreek is making a lasting impression.

The Green Room: This bad boy is a venue for all entertainment purposes. Hosting a large variety of events ranging from electronic music/artists, to touring and local rock bands, The Green Room aims

to please all. Wielding a palette of events like Comedy and Karaoke nights, as well as bar specials and contests, you can find something that tickles your fancy here.

Mia’s Lounge: This bar, just south of the railroad tracks by downtown, holds a great variety of bands and performances.

With an outdoor smoking bar and an indoor pool lounge, Mia’s is a well-rounded bar providing a well-rounded experience.

Pepsi Amphitheater: Right off of the 17 south, leaving Flagstaff, Pepsi Amphitheater is a venue hosting more major events like music festivals and U.S. touring bands. If you’re someone who likes to go big before they go home, this Amphitheater is right up your alley.

Cultured Frozen Yogurt: It

is one thing Frozen Yogurt is delicious alone, but Cultured goes a step further in their approach to an incredibly laid back atmosphere, and music performances. You are given an experience at Cultured other Frozen Yogurt shops around the campus area do not provide.

The Museum Club: Located on historic Route 66, The Museum Club is a venue targeted towards older audiences. All shows are 21 and over unless notified otherwise, so the shows can often be a little more laid back. Regardless of limitations, The Museum Club gives a clean-cut, quality experience for any shows and events they host.

Whether you’re out on a rock and roll weekend or just to hear the blues, Flagstaff has the music and venues to suit all your tastes and musical needs.

rriving in March 2012 from the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP), NAU’s vice president of intercollegiate athletics Lisa Campos was charged by university President John Haeger with bringing excellence to NAU Athletics.

In an April interview with The Lumberjack, Haeger laid out the importance of the program and something of the vision he wished Campos to pursue.

“We also wanted to up the profile of NAU Athletics . . .

We wanted to do that for a couple reasons. Like it or not, this culture is all about athletics and we were pretty mediocre in some cases,” Haeger said. “I told Lisa . . . make it better. What she is doing from those looking in from the outside; she’s building her team. She’s bringing in people she believes will take us to the next level.”

Since that time, there have been considerable changes in staffing. Gone are Steve Shaff, assistant athletic director for media relations after 14 years with the university; George Fox after 12 years; Walkup Skydome Events Coordinator Richard Grijalva, who pled no contest to sexual assault in April; Craig Choate, who chose to retire following the alleged complaints of his players, among others.

It is not uncommon for there to be a shake-up in any organization when new management arrives. This is especially true in the world of athletics, whether professional or collegiate. There is no tenure for coaches, their assistants or those in athletic administrations.

“I’ve had an opportunity to evaluate the department and restructure it to the way I think it is best going to serve our student athletes. Obviously, that’s the number one reason we’re here, to serve our student athletes,” Campos said.

While Campos would not directly discuss why those who had been with the program before her arrival were let go, she indicated her vision and theirs may not have been the same.

“Perhaps the direction I’m taking the department is not in line with where they want the department to go,” Campos said.

One example is the new direction of the media relations department, now called Athletic Communications. Rather than the old sports media model of numbers and stats, Campos emphasizes a more holistic approach to sports information.

“In terms of the old sports information department . . . that’s just changing with the times. You’ll see that across the board at a lot of universities athletic departments because until now, sports information was literally giving numbers

and anybody with the media stats . . . Now it’s more about the social media, it’s a broader communication plan,” Campos said. “Now it’s engaging our community, ensuring that people learn who Zack Bauman is, not just as a football player.

It’s a lot more information that people want.”

Denise Thompson, the new assistant athletic director for communications, expanded on this theme.

“Well, our industry actually changes every year. If you look at this business about 10 years ago it was a lot about stats and things like that. But especially with the growth of social media things are changing. So now there is a lot of virtual aspects that go with sports information,” Thompson said.

Having worked for the old media relations as a graduate assistant and now hired full-time as an assistant to Thompson, Stayson Isobe has the benefit of seeing both past and new administrations.

“The previous administration had a lot of experience at NAU with decades of combined service . . . That being said, I am excited to be a part of the new administration as it is an exciting time to be a part of the new direction of NAU athletics,” Isobe said.

“My vision, again I think some of the people are on board with that vision and maybe there are some who aren’t, and I think when you look at some of the transition that’s happened here again it was either through evaluation: I felt that those areas needed to have new leadership or they[those who have left voluntarily] just had an opportunity to make more money or be at a bigger school,” Campos said.

There has been considerable personnel change in the athletic department since Campos’ arrival. NAU received the Big Sky Conference President’s Award this year, and Campos hopes to continue this trend.

nowbowl is well known in Flagstaff for being a hub spot for winter activities, but summer provides a plethora of attractions as well.

When you think about Snowbowl in the summer, think Scenic Chairlifts, disc golf, hiking trails, live music and BBQ. Ksenia Hartl, a Snowbowl representative, discussed various Snowbowl summertime activities.

“Visitors have access to scenic trails that are beautifully kept,” Hartl said. “There are no age or height restrictions to go on these adventures.”

The ranger program works in conjunction with chairlift rides.

“The National Park Service & U.S. Forest Service Interpretive Partnership is a team of nine rangers, mostly retired, and most volunteers,” Hartl said. “Visitors leave with great experience and much knowledge of the surrounding environment.”

Another attraction at Snowbowl is the free 18-hole disc golf course, originally designed for the 2003 Professional Disc Golf Association World Championships. This course is open for the summer season every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Snowbowl has equipment for rent. The grass is green and even though people missed a few “shots” here and there, non-professionals can enjoy the different terrain levels.

Hiking is another allure of Snowbowl both locals and visitors enjoy.

Tim and Melissa Thompson, a Flagstaff couple visiting for the day, said, “When work gets crazy we like to take the day and hike around together. We come here every once and a while to do that.”

With the open space and fresh air, it is easy to see how locals and out-of-state visitors find Snowbowl a great way to get away from the city grind.

“Hiking and taking the chairlift ride are calming and exciting,” said Jessica Ibarra, an aspiring photographer. “I can get great photos from the chairlift ride and being ground level on hiking trails gives my photography a different perspective.”

Visitors can walk a trail and see wildlife roaming the open space, and then come back in a week or two and see new critters, different lighting and new colors. There are also people who lie on the ground searching the skies while others are napping alongside each other.

To make spending the whole day up at Snowbowl possible is the Peak Side Cafe, located at the base of the Arizona Snowbowl's Scenic Skyride at the Agassiz Lodge. The café offers a complete lunch and dinner menu.

Along with the attractions visitors can enjoy daily, Snowbowl also puts effort toward organizing special events for visitors. The live music of Flat Fives and Brad Bays is something visitors can expect to enjoy in the upcoming events at Snowbowl.

Another noteworthy event occurring at Snowbowl is the Climb to Conquer Cancer on Aug. 17. This event is held by the American Cancer Society and had raised thousands of dollars over the years. Lowell Observatory will have a telescope on display for solar viewing at Snowbowl from 10 a.m. to noon (weather permitting). Attendees can also enjoy the live music at this unique event that offers everyone in the community the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.

For those looking ahead to winter, Snowbowl is very pleased to be offering Snowbowl Season Pass Holders Ski 12 Mountains and 3,913 Inches of Snow, a collaboration of multiple ski areas and transferrable passes.

The Grand Canyon Arizona’s natural wonder of the world

ith summer coming to an end and students returning to northern Arizona, why not spend some time at one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World? The Grand Canyon brings in 4.5 million visitors each year, and the South Rim is only 90 minutes from Flagstaff.

Camping Some people visit the Grand Canyon for a day; while others want to spend their time enjoying all the Grand Canyon has to show them. The National Park Service allows guests to stay overnight on the rim of the Grand Canyon in designated campgrounds for tents or RVs. Those interested in venturing below the rim can apply for backpacking permits through the Backcountry Office.

Lodging Lodging in the park on the South Rim is in Grand Canyon Village, which has various hotels and lodges, including the historic El Tovar. Lodging requires advanced booking reservations for the summer, and reservations can be made through Xanterra Parks and Resorts.

Tusayan, the gateway town to the park, is seven miles from the South Rim entrance and offers hotels, motels and other lodging for visitors who want to go to the Grand Canyon but stay outside the park boundaries.

Transportation The shuttle bus is free for all visitors. The shuttle bus goes around the South Rim and is a 50 minute round-trip.

The buses run every 15-30 minutes, but schedules can vary.

The bus stops are a short walking distance from the rim views and go to and from restaurants, hotels, campgrounds and the Visitor Center.

Train services commute from Flagstaff and Williams.

The Grand Canyon Railway goes from Williams to Grand Canyon Village, and gives guests the opportunity to travel to the Grand Canyon for the day.

Rim Attractions If you do not plan to venture below the rim into the harsh beauty of the Canyon, there is plenty to do at the rim. Explore ancient cultures at Hopi House and Desert View Watchtower, take in a condor talk by a Park Ranger or watch sun set at Hermit’s Rest. The Park Service provides numerous interactive ranger talks and activites.

Hiking The most popular trails on the South Rim are the Bright Angel and South Kaibab Trails, both of which lead to the Colorado River. Hiking in the Canyon is extremely strenuous, and all who partake should be prepared for extreme heat, weather and elevation changes.

The Bright Angel Trail has rest houses with water at 1.5 miles, three miles, and at Indian Gardens (4.5 miles).

It is 9.5 miles from the South Rim to Bright Angel Campground, and advance reservations and a backcountry permit are required for a stay there or at Phantom Ranch.

The South Kaibab Trail does not have accessible water, and is seven miles from the rim to Phantom Ranch.

Guided Tours Jeep and van tours are based outside the park, and let their guests enjoy a touring experience. With a local guide, guests see the viewpoints on the canyon rim and learn

about the human history, wildlife, folklore and geology of the Grand Canyon.

South Rim Air Tours are a great way to see the entire Grand Canyon at once. There are both helicopter and fixedwing tours in the Grand Canyon region offered daily. The tours are based outside the Grand Canyon and some air operators are based in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Las Vegas.

While some enjoy sitting back and relaxing while they see the Grand Canyon, there are those who enjoy taking the time to see details of the Grand Canyon. Park Rangers and various commercial companies lead guided hikes through the North and South Rim. Bike rentals and guides are available for guests. The rentals and guides are provided by Bright Angel Bicycles and are located at the Visitor Center. Bikes are available from April 1 to Oct. 31.

Mule trips are a century-old tradition that goes into the Canyon. The rides are ride through the park’s woodlands and scenic canyon overlooks, and also into the Canyon.

Authorized concessionaries offer raft trips for its guests who ride down the Colorado River. There are oneday trips and 3-21 day trips.

Reservations are required and when you decide to take a rafting trip; check with the Transportation Desks in Bright Angel, Maswik or Yavapai lodges or with an authorized concessionaire to book a trip with a commercial company.

The 3-21 days rafting trips require a reservation in advance. There are many of companies that provide rafting trips through the Grand Canyon and offer a variety of trips.

There are various water craft available, including paddle rafts, motorized rafts, oar rafts and dories.

Whether you are looking to go to the Grand Canyon for a day or for a week, Flagstaff ’s proximity to the area urges residents and visitors to explore its grandeur.

Have you been on a trail lately?

s Flagstaff starts to really feel the heat of the summer, and the monsoons start to calm down, you might start seeing an increase in biking around town. For those who have been living in town for a while, biking is certainly not a new mode of transportation. Often cited as the easiest way to traverse Flagstaff, biking is also a healthy exercise that cuts down on fuel and carbon dioxide emissions.At an elevation of 7,000 feet, Flagstaff has not only beautiful views but also a plethora of trails to bike on during the summer and — if you’re brave — the winter.

ON CAMPUS Let’s start close to home. NAU encourages bike riding.

There are yellow bikes dispersed around campus for students to rent for free and use at their leisure. Additionally, a bike path snakes through campus, providing easy access to classes and not a half-bad outdoors feel. A great part of campus to bike on is the trail from central campus to south campus that starts at the intersection between McKay Village and Campus Heights. When the trail reaches the forest section between the Hilltop Townhomes and Gabaldon Hall, it’s almost enough to forget you’re heading to a class in the Forestry building.

With its mostly easy gradients and gravel-like paths, the Buffalo Park loop is best suited for mountain bikes or those with knobby tires. If this does not suit your fancy, you can stay on the flat trail, which does not go up the mesa.

FLAGSTAFF URBAN TRAIL SYSTEM Scattered around Flagstaff are a mix of forest and city trails. There are more than 35 catalogued with different lengths, levels of difficulty and amount of wildlife. While they can be found in the Flagstaff Urban Trails System section of the city of Flagstaff website, here are a few: 1.

The Arizona Trail, which is a 4.6-mile trail starting at Fisher Point Trail and ending at Oldham Trail. It travels through the middle of Flagstaff and offers relatively flat ground to bike on.

Foxglenn Trail starts at Butler Road and goes to Harold Ranch Road, traveling 1.9 miles through the west side of town through the forest.

Tunnel Springs Trail offers a steady climb for a more intense exercise as well as a lovely view. It goes through a ponderosa pine forest for about 1.9 miles at Mars Hill.

FLAGSTAFF BIKING ORGANIZATION The best part of all of this is you do not have to bike alone. The Flagstaff Biking Organization (FBO) puts together community bike rides. They also help maintain the trails around Flagstaff in order to keep them in good order for those who love to ride. Some of their events include taking kids out for bike rides, having fundraisers for the trails and creating awareness to reduce the risk of bike accidents on the road.

There is a one-time membership fee if you want to become a member, but this is not mandatory in order to enjoy what FBO has to offer. AROUND TOWN Although not necessarily a bike ride full of nature, Flagstaff has bike lanes through town that provide easy access to shops, restaurants and amenities. With plenty of bicycle racks to lock your bike to, it makes it easy to head down San Francisco Street to go to a yoga class or to Firecreek Coffee Company for an espresso.

On Sundays from June-October, you can take your bike and head down to the parking lot across from the library from 8 in the morning till noon for the farmer’s market. Not only are you supporting local farmers, but you are also reducing the amount of traffic that can clog Aspen on that day. Winwin, right?
