T

he face of student representation for NAU at the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) will soon be changing with the introduction of a new student representative.

Previous ABOR student representative, Jennifer Ginther, ended her term in June and Governor Jan Brewer appointed senior political science major Kaitlin Thompson as her replacement. Thompson, who will undertake her responsibilities as student representative while working toward a master’s degree in public administration, aspired to hold the position because she wanted to be a voice for the student body. “I was inspired by the opportunity to be able to serve as a voice for my fellow students and then also to be able to get a unique perspective on how the university — and all universities in Arizona — function at the state level,” Thompson said. Governor Brewer said she believes Thompson

will be an asset to both NAU and ABOR. “Kaitlin is a tremendously accomplished young adult who has excelled in her studies, workplace and her community,” Brewer said. “She will be a valuable representative on the Arizona Board of Regents for Northern Arizona University and for students everywhere.” Thompson said in her term as student representative, she hopes to address the issues of graduation rates, textbook costs and parking and transportation on campus. Tom Bauer, director of NAU’s Office of Public Affairs, said student representatives play an important role in presenting varying voices and opinions to ABOR.

“Student regents are a full voting member of the Arizona Board of Regents,” Bauer said. “They not only give students a voice at the table, they vote on every issue facing the system, from policies to tuition. wThey are an important part of the system.” Thompson sees her major responsibility as a representative is to make sure students know what their options are and how to properly take full advantage of those options. “In the university system, the student actually is the customer, so they need to actually know that there are provisions in place to make sure that they’re represented, to make sure they’re not just spending their money on their education blindly. They have a say.”
