The Persian poet and philosopher Rumi began one of his most insightful and timeless thoughts with this: “Yesterday, I was clever, so I wanted to change the world.” At one point or another in each of our lives, we all desire a change for the better around us. In our family owned business, we believe our individual efforts deliver exponentially greater results when we work together. That’s why, no matter which town each Dunegrass store calls home, we strive to not only talk about our values for community progress but also show those values. Each spring and summer, the staff at every store heads out to pick up litter at our area beaches. We do the same, year-round, throughout our towns, ensuring the same measure of cleanliness extends to our downtown streets and parks.

Helping to maintain a beautiful, safe atmosphere is just the beginning; we also work to spread and maintain a beautiful attitude. The grand opening of our latest location, Beulah, set a new standard for that warm sense of community connection we seek.

While that new store smell is nice, we know being welcomed with open arms by the residents and other local business owners is a far better sensation. Getting involved with Michigan Releaf’s tree planting at Academy Park in Beulah gave us a way to give back before we’d even opened — and it gave our new community’s families a beautiful way to enjoy shade in the warmer months for decades to come.

Most recently, we had coffee with Senator Curt VanderWall, where we had an open conversation about issues important to all of us: How we can provide a safer environment for any person, active or inactive, within the steadily growing in-yourface cannabis market.

For us, being part of the community means both doing and listening. We want to be a part of making every community better, whether by planting trees, picking up litter, or incorporating guidelines on safe and respectful cannabis use. We believe that each of us has the power to achieve better. Or as Rumi concluded his thought at top: “Today, I am wise, so I am changing myself.”
