s the snow flies, Northern Michigan festivals amp up. This embrace of the winter season includes a host of events for the family, for the sports-oriented and for those who just want a night out. Here’s a look at what’s in store this winter season. Holidazzle Parade on Main Street

is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. Come down to the Main Street in the Village at Bay Harbor and be “dazzled” by the lighted floats created by our local area schools, businesses and friends. You won’t want to miss the Santa Fun Runners who will be kicking off the parade. The Bay Harbor Ice and Spice Festival runs Friday and Saturday, Jan. 17-18. The event features professional and amateur ice carving competitions, along with a chili challenge program. Last year’s festival also involved aerial ski and snowboard shows, dog sled rides and other family fun activities. Visit www. villagebayharbor.com for more information.

Boyne City

The holidays begin in Boyne City with the annual open house and Santa parade on Friday, Nov. 29. The open house begins prior to and continues following the Santa parade, which begins at 6 p.m. Santa visits will follow the parade

through downtown Boyne City. Many shops will feature refreshments and specials during the open house event. The Holiday Hobby Craft Show at Boyne City High School is Saturday, Dec. 7. The snow-inspired fun continues with the annual Winterfest on Saturday, Jan. 25, in the downtown area. The festival is planned with games and music, a chili cook-off, scavenger hunt and snowshoe nature hikes. Call (231) 582-6222 or visit www. boynechamber.com for more information about Boyne City’s winter events and festivals.

Ski weekends

End-of-the-season ski parties are held at all local resorts. The first this season will be Carnival Weekend on March 14-16 at Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls, designed as a “Mardi Gras meets the mountain” encounter with costumed skiers and snowboarders, cook-outs, music and the Slush Cup. Call (231) 549-6000 or visit www.boyne. com for more information. The mountain’s sister property, Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs, will play host to Crazy Daze on Saturday, March 15, when a more family-oriented day on the slopes includes costume contests, a ski-over-the-pond contest and other children’s activities. Call (231) 526-3000 or visit www.boyne.com for more details. Finally, Nub’s Nob Ski Area in Harbor Springs hosts its Mardi Gras event, Saturday, March 22, featuring the Soaker Cup, silly slalom for kids and adults, races and a costume contest. Call (231) 526-2131 or visit www.nubsnob. com for more information.

Additionally, the party wraps up with the annual international outhouse races planned for Saturday afternoon. GEAR UP

ki season means equipment. And repairs. Maybe even lessons. There’s ski edge sharpening, waxing, binding and boot repairs, plus much more to keep you slick and safe on the slopes. Northwest Lower Michigan offers a host of local businesses designed to provide ski season tune-ups to get your gear in tip-top shape. Tuning professionals will sharpen ski edges and ensure there’s no rust

or gouges from the prior season and subsequent summer storage. Additionally, bindings and boots can be damaged, so checking that bindings are secure and tight will help foster safety on the ski hills. If you haven’t got any ski equipment, there are plenty of places to rent gear for a day on the slopes. This can be valuable both for infrequent skiers and those who wish to test drive equipment before

19 19 investing in their own gear. Finally, those who want to brush up on their downhill skills or learn how to master the skis versus gravity game can enroll in ski lessons, available at many local ski resorts or city recreation departments. Lessons are offered by Nub’s Nob and Boyne Highlands, both in Harbor Springs, Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls and Mount McSauba in Charlevoix.

Silent sports

Cross country skis and snowshoes offer an opportunity to set your own pace in Michigan’s winter wonderland The silent sports of winter — cross country skiing and snowshoeing — land its aficionados smack in the middle of snow-covered wilderness, activities that take advantage of winter’s stillness. These winter sports involve less impact on skeletal joints and to a great degree, minimal impact to the environment. Woods and waters best left quiet can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace by both beginners and advanced cross country skiers and snowshoers. Trails abound to offer soft, snowy settings or more challenging routes for the selfpropelled wintertime woodsy folks. Most trails are available to both cross country skiers and those who use snowshoes, unless marked otherwise. If new to these silent winter sports, please note that it is considered common courtesy for snowshoers to avoid the cross country ski tracks in the snow, sharing the trail without marring the set tracks.

large trail network across Northern Michigan provides ample opportunities to ride snowmobiles through some of the most beautiful places in the region. Local snowmobile clubs and state trail groomers keep conditions ideal when the snow falls, allowing both residents and tourists to sled through woods and snowy open spaces, riding along trails that meander from town to town. For those using Petoskey as a starting point, a popular trail is the Chandler Hills loop. This scenic path should take about four hours, heading south to the Sturgeon River and Vanderbilt areas. The loop also connects to trails that go to Wolverine and Indian River. For those who use Charlevoix or East Jordan as a launch spot, there is a trail between the two cities that offers a quick and easy day trip option. Those in East Jordan, though, have easy access to the Jordan River Valley. The valley features pristine and beautiful trails cut through the 18,000-acre state forest, alongside scenic views of the Jordan River and Jordan River National Fish Hatchery. The hatchery offers public restrooms and warming facility. Snowmobile riders based in Harbor Springs have three nearby options. Those new to snowmobile riding may want to try the Alanson to Mackinaw City trail and back. It’s an old railroad grade that parallels U.S. 31. East of Pleasantview Road is a loop to Alanson and Pellston, with rentals and fuel near the Harbor Springs airport. West of Pleasantview Road is a trail leading to Larks Lake. Local snowmobile clubs and associations also accept donations for continued trail grooming expenses. Directly contact the organizations to make a financial contribution.

ust because the traditional growing season is long gone doesn’t mean farm fresh foods are, too. Numerous local communities play host to wintertime farmers markets, a growing trend as area food producers extend their seasons by experimenting with hoop houses, greenhouses and other growing techniques. Shoppers will this winter find fresh produce, organic meats and cheeses, homemade baked goods and other items from local farmers in Boyne City, Charlevoix, East Jordan, Harbor Springs and Petoskey.

East Jordan’s winter farmers market is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month from December through April, at the East Jordan Community Center, formerly known as the Civic Center. (231) 5367351

In addition to those using traditional alpine ski equipment, others on the slopes include snowboarders, telemark skiers or cross-country skiers, skiers with disabilities, skiers with specialized equipment and others. Please note: Be advised that a green circle, blue square, or black diamond trail at Nub’s Nob is not necessarily the same as a similarly rated trail at another ski area.
