ctober is an important month for Jessica and Lance Dykstra. Not only is it the month they were married — Oct. 25, 2014 — it was also the month they began to date. “We originally met while working at the casino,” Jessica said. “Five years afterward I left the casino and that’s when we began dating.” Jessica now works as manager of the Pied Piper Skatery in Petoskey and Lance continues to work in information technology at the casino. It was a Halloween event that brought the couple together. “I was there taking pictures (at the event) and I see this huge red headstress down the hall and ‘thought that’s going to be jessica.’” They soon began to date and have been together since. They both said their differences are what helps them work together as a couple. “He’s quiet and reserved and I’m loud and obnoxious. So we balance each other out. He keeps me grounded,” she said. Lance added “She makes me laugh. She likes jokes and she teases me a lot.” Jessica noted their engagement was intimate, and somewhat a spur-of-the moment event. “He took the kids (she has five

6 |upnorthbride.com 15 Fall Bride copy.indd 6

children from a previous relationship) to Traverse City and to pick out a ring and he brought it home and asked me.” They then began to plan their fall wedding in Petoskey. Jessica picked a retro theme for not only the wedding, but the wedding shower and bachelorette party as well. She describes the look of everything as retroglam and she wanted to shy away from a traditional look. “I think it’s a unique and pretty look,” she said. “I think that

era the girls are empowering. You don’t necessarily have to be picture perfect to be beautiful.” She used a classic red, white and black color scheme in order to incorporate Lance’s favorite color. Many of the decorations and the flowers were created by hand. “The bouquets were all handmade by me and my aunt. The flowers are red roses with feathers and glitter. Anybody that knows me knows I love sparkle and bling.”

She also included tulips into floral arrangements as a nod to Lance’s Dutch heritage. Jessica said she was happy to try something out of the ordinary for the look of the wedding and was pleased when guests were happily surprised by the theme concepts. “It was great to make an impression on people and open their eyes to new ideas,” she said. The couple had about 130 guests attend their wedding. The ceremony was at Petoskey Church of Christ and the reception was at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Paul Retherford took the photos for the day. The couple opted for less posed photos and instead wanted photos with captured moments. One of these moments that stood out for the couple was when they took time to see each other before the wedding happened. “It was just us (with the photographer) it was amazing to have that moment to ourselves before we went in front of everyone,” Jessica said. Lance said that was the moment of the day that stuck out the most. He added it was so special because he was able to see his “bride-to-be.” Because the day was busy Jessica and Lance didn’t have enough time to take all their photos (as a couple) in one day. So they opted to make an appointment for another day to take photos at the roller rink. Jessica said she was able to have her makeup and hair done again to take the more pin-up style photos with Lance. In their advice to engaged couples Lance and Jessica said the best thing to do is to not let the wedding planning stress you out. “It can consume your life and it’s over in a day,” Jessica said. “So enjoy the in between things besides planning. You’ve had this project that’s all you’ve been working on and it can be kind of sad.” They added the whole day was so special because it was a good time to bring family and friends together to celebrate. After the wedding they stayed at the Terrace Inn for a few days and enjoyed the time together. They plan to save an official honeymoon for another time. They were excited to move onto married life together because as Lance said, “I just love her.” Immediately Jessica responded with “He completes me.”

Jordan’s Journey:

wasn’t nervous all week, up until the hairdresser placed the last bobby pins into my hair.I was calm, collected and clear until that moment and I said to my the hairdresser, “OK, starting to freak out a little now.” I took a few deep breaths talked with Up North Bride has my sister, Arielle, and followed the wedding somehow calmed down journey of Jordan Spence (maybe it was the wine?) and Nelson Knill. Jordan Before the wedding is a News-Review reporter, my Mom gave me a Graphic editor and now Up North Bride editor. Her piece of advice and I engagement and wedding would suggest every plans were featured in the bride take it as well. She past three editions of Up told me if at all possible, North Bride. carve out some alone time the day of the wedding. She added to go do something you prefer to do alone, this helps you to reflect and relax before the whirlwind begins. I spent the evening of my wedding night at my hotel room alone, and steamed my dress. I woke up early the next morning to grab breakfast at Dripworks (a cafe in Petoskey). It was just what I needed. The days that lead up to your wedding is when you should accept as much help as possible. This is not the time to do everything yourself. Which is why I’m thankful for my family and my friend, Amanda Horvarter, who offered to be the day of wedding coordinator. She was there to help organize all the little things — which can easily stress a person out — and helped to keep my sanity. There are moments through out the day where it’s important to not let the excitement rush you. One of these times is when Dave Bell drove my father and me to the ceremony in his Packard. We took our time and even drove a few loops through downtown. My Dad loved it, and it allowed us a few moments alone before he gave me away. We were so happy to have Gayle Gennett offici-

ate our ceremony. She was recommended by our photographer and she helped guide us through everything and created a personal, spiritual ceremony. We wrote our own vows and decided to do a Celtic hand-fasting ceremony. The ceremony involves the couple holding hands as the pastor knots ribbons around their clasped hands while a blessing is recited. Nelson and I agreed one of the best decisions we made was to incorporate family in

different ways. All of our attendants were family members. Our ceremony music was played by my cousin, and Nelson’s brother wrote our first dance song, and the mother-son dance song. When you include family, I think it makes the memories more meaningful and the wedding — especially if you have a large one — more personal. The person to capture these personal moments was photographer (and co-worker) G. Randall Goss. Since we knew

him so well it helped keep us at ease. His knowledge and background with photography produced some beautiful images we will cherish. Another way we made the event more personal was our entrance to the reception. Nelson is a big fan of the WWE, so the ushers and attendants each entered the reception to a different famous wrestler’s themes song. Nelson even made shirts for them to wear Continued on page 12

and created a special outfit for himself. Our DJ, Brett Cummins of Motor City HDJ, helped make it what Nelson envisioned. Our food was also a big hit with our guests. We created the menu with Jamee Fry, director of food service and conference center at North Central Michigan College. My favorite food is macaroni and cheese, so she created a topping bar for the dish that included bacon, caramelized onions, creamed spinach and buffalo chicken. The only regret I had from the night is not grabbing a second plate of the food. I would recommend when little things don’t go as planned — we forgot the garter and the forecast called for thunderstorms all day— try and stay calm. Because, in the end everything will be fine — we made a spare garter out of ribbon and it only rained in the morning. We couldn’t have asked for a nicer day together and to share with our family and friends. Take little moments to bask in the happiness and joy of the day.

| Shower

simple Keeping it

BY A N N E K E L LY

T

he general consensus among both past and recent brides-to-be regarding wedding plans is… “Simplify.” Of course almost everyone has good intentions, going into the process. Despite good intentions, however, it’s inevitable plans become complicated and more elaborate as they unfold. For sanity if nothing else, gather your resolve. Watch that old Steve Martin standard, “Father of the Bride,” and have a good laugh as you gain perspective. Consider the bridal shower… just a simple gathering of family and friends and good wishes, right? The bride takes the back seat in planning this one, but she probably will fret about the invitation list. Back in Grandma’s day, etiquette dictated bridal showers were never to be thrown by the mother-of-the bride; friend yes, aunties OK, Grandma…maybe. Today, depending on the situation, mothers along with the bride’s friends or relatives often participate. Friends and family may live at a distance so it makes sense the bride’s home provides the cen-

tral location for entertaining. A lot of moms enjoy party planning for their daughter along with her friends. Often there are special shower foods and traditional family dishes for just the occasion. One family I know rotates a stash of glass party plates (with the punch cup holder) for each of their family showers. It wouldn’t be a shower without them. These are traditional parties: decorated with flowers, umbrellas, balloons or crepe paper, a light lunch followed by cake and punch. Maybe a few party games and the opening of gifts. I’m sure for larger groups, halls or church or community rooms are still rented. It’s all about honoring the bride. If the bride chooses “simple” the bridal shower should be simple. Up North Bride editor, Jordan Spence, a recent bride, shared that her bridal shower was “whimsical” with lots of bright colors to match her wedding theme in the flowers and decorations. “All my aunts pitched in to help and make the food,” she said. Apparently, at her mom’s shower, since the only thing

she could make was Jell-O, her mother was crowned “Jell-O Queen.” At Jordan’s shower, she was crowned “Mac n’ Cheese Queen,” in honor of her go-to favorite. All the guests brought a box of Mac n’ Cheese for her pantry. My daughter’s wedding showers were hosted by their sisters, and if I remember correctly, they were kitchen showers. Which is one theme that is an old favorite, along with bathroom, household or even lingerie (probably not that common any more.) How about a travel shower, if the couple is into travel? Many brides now veer away from the traditional and keep it more simple said wedding planners Ellen Vander Zee and Janelle Warnemuende of Smitten Events in Harbor Springs. Some of their clients plan couples showers. “They may choose to have a shower in a cocktail party setting with hors d’oeuvres,” they said. “A shower could be something as casual as a mimosa bar,” said Brittany Severinsen of n.m. Event Design. She concurs some couples

16 |upnorthbride.com 15 Fall Bride copy.indd 16

9/4/15 10:25 AM

choose simpler options. For the outdoorsy couple, a shower might take place outdoors and a gift theme could involve camping equipment. “They (shower hosts) get a lot of ideas from wedding sites,” she said. A shower could be geared around a regional or destination wedding theme. A friend recently hosted a nautical themed shower downstairs in The Weathervane restaurant in Charlevoix. The colors were navy and white, anchors were strung interspersed with hearts to decorate the windows, cupcakes and cookies were decorated accordingly and even the food was chosen to meld with the theme. Sarah Hagen, event planner at Castle Farms in Charlevoix, reports that one of their brides was treated to a royal tea party shower with fancy plates and cups, finger sandwiches and tea cakes. The Perry Hotel also provides a venue for bridal shower parties in the Rose Garden or Reycraft Room. Their Resort Room, provides an opportunity for entertaining a casual, intimate group up to 30 guests. Michele Grunch from Charlevoix Country Club is presently scheduling weddings in the Club’s unique barn venue, however, the barn might be a bit spacious for a bridal shower. She would suggest one of the Club’s dining rooms. It’s a personal preference call. What would the bride like? Honoring her style, her wishes and being respectful of her family, while celebrating the up- coming event in a special way, are simple guidelines for the planners. C R E AT I V EO U T L E T.C O M

he church or venue has been secured a year in advance, the officiant has been lined up. The reception location is reserved. The invitations are sent out, dresses are ordered and are altered, the florist is awaiting the final OK, the DJ or band has been scheduled and maybe even practicing, and now? Now it’s time to put the focus on the very important family and friends who will be the attendants for the ceremony. Beyond the dresses and suits that have been decided upon, the bride and groom usually thank their attendants in a special way for accepting the honor of their participation, with a small gift. Wedding are expensive. If attendants are traveling from a distance, buying their outfits, perhaps paying for lodging and giving a wedding gift to the happy couple, their commitment to participate may be a drain on their resources. For that reason, some brides and grooms will try to relieve the burden by making their gift to their attendants applicable to the event. Some brides will pay for hair styling and make up on the big day or add a piece of jewelry or scarf or clutch bag that will complete the outfit. Grooms might offer ties or the price of tuxedo rental or cuff links. The main thing, is brides and grooms want their friends or family members to be there enjoying the day no matter what and appreciate their presence at the event. If a destination wedding is in the wind, or a beach wedding is planned, attendant gifts can be geared for the occasion. The fun can begin with

beach bags or totes, towels or robes. The Monogram Goods boutique on Main Street in Harbor Springs, suggests any item, from clothing to jewelry can be personalized for the attendants. Elizabeth Blair Fine Pearls is also located on Main Street in Harbor, if the bride wants to splurge and make a statement. The Lake House in Charlevoix offers regional gift ideas for consideration. Signature blue and white tiles by Charlevoix artist, Sue Bolt, can be personalized with a theme to order, wedding or regional. The Round Lake Gallery, also in Charlevoix, features bright and whimsical artwork by Edith Pair, another local artist. Her wineglasses can be purchased already painted or the bride might opt to throw a bridal attendant painting party which is offered at the gallery. Edith Pair is the instructor for an evening of snacks and fun. (Bring your own beverages, but glasses and canvases are provided.) Participants may paint either a canvas or two wine glasses. For the gentlemen, a groomsman’s gift could be useful (i.e. wallets, flasks or money clips), personal (i.e. monogrammed note cards or towels), or part of the outfit (i.e. cuff links, ties, or tuxedo rental). Any country club pro shop might have just the thing for groomsmen who golf. Petoskey is home to many specialty shops which Continued on page 34

Gifts

Continued from page 33 offer unique gifts for both the bride’s and groom’s attendants. Stop in almost any shop in the Gaslight District and you will find a variety of suggestions. Look at Harbor Wear for sweatshirts or blankets for a casual gift, or Reusch Jewelers for a more sophisticated memoir of the occasion. Grandpa Shorter’s Mercantile, is fun to browse and offers unique gift items. Stop in Cutler’s for anything from Vera Bradley bags to beer making kits. Whatever you choose and wherever you shop, remember to think personal, think thematic, and think appreciative. “Gifts tell a story,” said Robin Couzens, a sales associate at Monogram Goods. “They may represent the time the bride and groom have spent together with their friends. They are a way to show gratitude.”
