position she now holds as assistant director of Community Mediation Services to the many volunteer hours for many different organizations she has put in over the years. Doan is a Northern Michigan native. She was born in Wolverine, the oldest child of Jim and Theda Skinner. Her dad was a Department of Natural Resources officer and her mom was principal of Wolverine Schools. She has a younger brother, Alan Skinner, who lives in Mancelona. After graduating from high school in Wolverine, she moved to suburban Flint. “There were different job opportunities down there,” Doan said. She held several jobs, including working in a phonograph record factory where she was a sound quality inspector. “It was fun,” Doan said. “We played a record and listened for the quality. We did a lot of Motown 45s. It was great and interesting.” She did other factory and restaurant work in the Flint area, but events in the late 1960s and early 1970s changed her life’s direction. She moved back to Wolverine in 1967.
“I came back north when the riots started in Flint. I couldn’t see myself there any longer.” Also in 1967, after she moved back north, she was involved in a “horrific” car accident on I-75. “I spent six weeks in a wheelchair with broken legs,” she said. In 1969, she moved to Gaylord, where she has lived ever since, and that year began working at Standard Products. Her life took another turn in 1971 when she had a bout with cancer. Then, in 1973, her daughter, Jennifer, was born. Soon after that, Doan’s career path took a turn again. In January 1975 she began working at the Alpine Center. She took this job “with the goal to learn everything I could learn and it was pretty eye-opening” as she worked with individuals who were developmentally disabled or had severe physical disabilities. Right before her career path swerved again, in September 1979, Doan married Jim Monforton, who had four children — Robin, Buck, and twins Joette and Joel. In November 1979, she decided to open Courtesy photo her own foster care home. She bought a Baby Judi, being held by her father, Jim Cont’d on next page Skinner.

house specifically for this purpose and “took six clients home with me.” She made the move because “there had to be a better way” to care for these individuals instead of being “warehoused where they didn’t eat together or do things together.” Doan also was pleased that her daughter who had been an only child, almost instantly had 10 siblings. “We incorporated all of them into our life,” Doan said. She was involved in foster care until 1994 when she “kind of retired — but I didn’t like being retired, so I went to work at (First United) Methodist Church” in Gaylord where she was a member and put together the weekly bulletin among other jobs. In January 2004, she landed a full-time position at Community Mediation and has been employed there since. She said her path to mediation came through her volunteer work. As a Kiwanian, she was asked to be a mediator and also take the training to be able to teach mediation; she complied and has accomplished both tasks. She became just the third woman allowed to join in Gaylord Kiwanis Club when she became a member 25 years ago. She is past president three times, past secretary, treasurer, has been chair of the Christmas basket program, participates in the Terrific Kids program Fridays during the school year at South Maple Elementary School and last year was Kiwanian of the Year. She also has worked the Kiwanis Alpenfest dime toss for 25 years and will be part of it again this year. Cont’d on next page

“We raise $6,000 one dime at a time,” Doan chuckles. She enjoys being a Kiwanian because “it is an opportunity to volunteer in the community with things that are already established and there is a lot of stuff for kids. That’s always been important.” As a member of First United Methodist Church, Doan said she made “1,000 lemon pies and a million cream puffs” for the church’s annual soup lunches, usually held four consecutive Wednesdays in March. She no longer bakes for the lunches, but she shared her pastry dough recipe to keep the traditional lemon meringue pie and the hot fudge cream puffs on the menu. (As an aside, she also used to bake wedding cakes, but now limits her cake baking to making a birthday treat for her granddaughter, Nissa Monforton.) Through church, she developed another volunteer affiliation, this time with the Otsego County Food Pantry where she began as First United Methodist’s representative. She has been involved for more than 25 years with the pantry, serving now as vice president of the board and as statistician, creating a monthly report and distributing it to “whoever is interested in having them.” Doan is proud of the backpack program that began in 2014 and provides food for the weekend for children in need. She said 200 backpacks has been distributed every Friday to 200 students. The program is open to kids attending North Ohio, South Maple, Johannesburg-Lewiston and St. Mary Cathedral schools.
Doan is also a member of RSVP, the Order of the Eastern Star, a life member of the Girls Scouts — she has been a Scout since she was 10 years old — and formerly volunteered with the Special Olympics for both summer and winter games. She also is a courtappointed guardian, helping the elderly and disabled with their needs. While the new store is much larger than the previous location, it also includes new features like an archery range and rooms available for seminars and classes. “It’s really kind of fun to stand back and watch it all,” he said. “All the positive feedback we’ve got on the move, that part has been overwhelming.” After the move and now being selected as honored industry, Poet said the store is excited to move forward and participate in Alpenfest. “We would like to thank all the board members who selected us,” he said. “The selection is one more thing that confirmed our move was a positive thing for Gaylord. “We continue to want to be plugged into the community and we appreciate the recognition.” Follow @Mark_JohnsonGHT on Twitter.

When looking for a location to expand and add another store prior to 2000, in addition to the Jay’s Sporting Goods store in Clare, Poet said the company considered several different factors. Gaylord was quickly a candidate with the Interstate 75 corridor immediately in the vicinity. When examining the city itself more comprehensively, Poet said Jay’s quickly found Gaylord would be the perfect location. “The more we studied Gaylord, we found it was a great fit,” he said. “It met all of our criteria and the community seemed to be very active and that was a huge bonus.” Part of the activity Poet found so attractive was the popular Alpenfest celebration, which has drawn visitors from around the country since its inception 50 years ago. Now, 15 years since moving to Gaylord, Poet and his store will be able to be a part of the celebration in what Beachnau called an easy decision. “They fit all of the criteria,” he said. “The timing was really perfect.” Poet said this honor is especially rewarding after all the work

Dobrzelewski will preside over Alpenfest parade Cont’d
Dobrzelewski worked for the Baymont Inn for 15 years after she left the Holiday Inn. She continued to volunteer for Alpenfest. Although she loved hospitality, it is a 24-hour-a-day job, which can wear on you over the years. Now she is working for the City of Gaylord, which she also loves. And she can do her work for the city and come home to live her life at the end of the day. “I’ve been on the Alpenfest board since 2004,” she said. “It’s an entire week of volunteering, moving trash, giving information, picking up litter, answering questions. The board is a working board — but it’s also a lot of fun.” Dobrzelewski will join fellow honorees Judi Doan, der Buergermeister, Jay’s Sporting Goods, honored industry, and Bill Marshall, DAR Award Recipient at the Alpenfest Courtesy photo Honors Luncheon noon, Tuesday, July 14 at Here Patti Dobrzelewski is sandwiched between two other members of the Alpenfest Honors the Otsego Club.
