lissa and Matt Meisel were married at St. Francis Xavier Church in Petoskey, and chose Stafford's Perry Hotel for their reception. "We had a very small wedding with only family and our very closest friends. We had less than 100 people in attendance," said Alissa. "Our reception was at Stafford's Perry Hotel in the Rose Dining Room and we felt that the room was very unique and didn't need a lot of decorations. The view out of the Rose Room window is of Little Traverse Bay and this was the best decoration that we could ask for." The Meisels met in 2009 at Seung-Ni Fit Club, a gym in Bay City. Matt was born and raised in Bay City and Alissa in Cass City. They now live in Essexville, near Bay City. Alissa currently is an occupational therapist at a skilled nursing facility. "I am a deputy sheriff with the Tuscola County Sheriff's Office, currently assigned to the road patrol," said Matt. "Alissa and I î ¤ Continued on page 8

really love it up there and we both came up with the idea to return to the Perry and spend two nights for our first anniversary." Alissa and Matt did not have a formal wedding planner, they said, but looked to Angie Whitener, director of sales at Stafford's Perry Hotel for help. "She was amazing. Angie was kind of like a wedding planner and became a friend to me. She was more than helpful throughout our two year engagement," Alissa said. The couple used several vendors in the area for their Northern Michigan destination wedding. The wedding flowers and table centerpieces were created by Jackie Burrell, owner of Flowers from Sky's the Limit in Petoskey. Alissa's bouquet was all white flowers, wrapped with fabric from her mother's wedding gown and finished with silver wire and pearls. One of Alissa's wedding shoes, along with her engagement ring and the couple's wedding rings, was chosen as the cover of Up North Bride fall/winter 2014-15 issue. "DIY projects I did create included our card box that had three tiers and resembled a cake. I also created our wedding guest book for our guests to sign. I took pictures from our engagement shoot by photographer Paul Retherford and used these images to create the book," said Alissa. The couple returned to the area where they became engaged for their honeymoon, staying at a resort in Treasure Island, Fla. Their advice for engaged couples? "Being newly engaged is a very special time for couples. Take some time to enjoy it! Plan the wedding together. You will both learn how to lean on each other through ups and downs during your engagement."

loral designer and owner of Flowers From Sky's the Limit in Petoskey, Jackie Burrell describes a recent wedding where the bride chose white flowers for both her bouquet and the bridesmaids. "White is always beautiful, always classic. The bridesmaids wore black cocktail dresses," said Jackie. "The bouquets were white hydrangeas." Often, keepsakes or other objects are entwined in bouquets. Jackie once was asked by a mother to include pieces of her

daughter's "blankie." Bouquet stems have been wrapped in fabric from their mother's wedding dress. Charms or cameo portraits have been hidden within the bouquet — special tokens for the bride and attendants. "We have used family heirlooms within bouquets, treasure trinkets. We've included a bride's late mother's wedding ring, a special pin or brooch. Things that add personal touches," Angie Christy, floral designer at Flowers from Nature's Garden in Petoskey said. Sydney Wormell, owner of Upsy-Daisy Floral in Boyne City,
adds she is seeing brides asking to add "bling" to bouquets. "They add gems or wirework in addition to flowers," she said. "Wirework of curliques is being added to bouquets and boutonniere." "Most brides are referencing 'Pinterest' when choosing flowers," Sydney said. "Brides have so many more ideas they saw on Pinterest they want us to replicate," added Angie. The online sharing site allows brides to "pin," or bookmark photos others have posted. From monochrome themes to

a variety of color, brides are choosing simple, elegant bouquets to those that resemble a more casual look. A mixture of traditional flowers, such as orchids, may be combined with more casual varieties such as snapdragons. "Brides are telling me to 'Put it together like I picked it out of the garden,"' said Angie. "We're adding Queen Anne's lace, Dusty Miller or lamb's ear." Said Sydney,"We get brides asking for 'local' flowers." In keeping with a "green" or environmentally friendly theme, choosing native plants and flowers will use less fuel for transportation. Many of the more exotic flowers are grown overseas and are shipped to the coast, and then trucked across the United States. At Sky's the Limit, arrangements and bouquets can be "recycled." "Northern Michigan is increasingly becoming a 'destination' location and couples who travel here are choosing to donate their bouquet, boutonniere and table flowers back to our 'Flowers for Friends,' program," said Jackie. A project started about seven years ago by Petoskey Girl Scouts, "Flowers for Friends" recycles flowers to be rearranged into smaller arrangements which are delivered to area nursing homes, hospitals, Brother Dan's Food Pantry and Manna, all area senior centers and various other recipients. Jackie adds that 36,000 arrangements in the program have been delivered in the past seven years.

Jordan's Journey:
The next
step
Up North Bride has been following the wedding journey of Jordan Spence and Nelson Knill. Jordan is a Petoskey News-Review reporter and Graphic editor. Her engagement and early wedding plans are featured in the Spring-Summer 2014 issue.

hile planning a wedding it's easy to become lost in the small details. Luckily for us, in the past six months Nelson and I have been able to figure out the foundation to the wedding first. Since the last article we've talked to our attendants and have the template to invitations. We've also booked the DJ, photographer, florist, caterer and I bought
16 |upnorthbride.com
a dress. Because we're both family oriented people we wanted them included into many aspects of the wedding. Our wedding parties consist of brothers, sisters and cousins. Three attendants for each of us. In addition we will have two ushers, flower girl and ring bearer. My cousin will play the music when I walk down the aisle. To help me figure things out I attended a couple local bridal shows. They're a good way to dis-
cover local vendors and see what their styles are. Bridal shows also have the bonus of cake samples. Mmmm cake. This is where I discovered our florist, A.R. Pontius in Harbor Springs. I met the owner, Jamie Platte, at a bridal show and liked her ideas. We booked the shop as our florist a few months later. With our flowers I want things to be "elegantly disheveled," with a lot of texture and color. I'm sure Jamie can bring that vision to fruition.
Planning tips: — Trust your feelings and opinions about vendors. The reason I chose the people I did was because I had a good initial feeling about them. — Set your theme early because this can help guide the whole process, decorations, flowers, music, invites, food etc. — Don't get lost in the details early on. Yes, I know it's fun to craft, but you don't want to lose out on a good vendor while you're busy making centerpieces. — Research all the area has to offer. Ask around about vendors. — Follow vendors on social media. It's a good way to see examples of their style, taste and creations. — Keep one book with receipts, vendor information. This is where I keep the sheets tracking how much we've paid on things. I copied the budget planner in Up North Bride. It's also easy to find free printables online to help you do this. — Don't rush registering. You can always add items as the wedding date gets closer. When it comes to knives and pans, research which ones you want before adding the item. — Be open when trying on dresses. Many women end up with dress styles they initially nixed.
C O U R T ESY O F PE R RY FI S H
Along with the wedding shows, the knowledge of my co-workers has been invaluable. Because neither Nelson nor I is from this area, it's helped to have recommendations from them. This is how we found our caterer, Jamee Fry, director of food service and conference center at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey. Once we found out she makes most of the food from scratch and uses local ingredients we were sold. It's also been beneficial to be a journalist because we've hired a few past and present co-workers to do other tasks. Petoskey NewsReview photographer, G. Randall Goss, will be our photographer
for the wedding. Graphic intern, Jennelle Roberts, will photograph our engagement photos. A former co-worker from when I wrote for CM-Life, Perry Fish, designed our invitations. Because we both value the music we wanted to be sure to book a good DJ. My cousin attended a couple weddings Brett Cummins of Motor City DJ played for, and highly recommended him. We made sure to book him as soon as possible. We've registered at one store, Cutler's in Petoskey, and plan to register at one more. We made sure to register for items we know we will use, and for items at differ-

ent price points. One of my favorite planning experiences so far has been dress shopping. Trying on several gowns at Petoskey Bridal gave me an idea of what style of dress I like. Many salons book appointments and I scheduled one at Becker's Bridal in Fowler. My mom suggested Becker's because of its central location to my bridesmaids, and she bought her wedding dress there. It's at this appointment I found my dress. It was a happy day because I was surrounded by family and friends. Especially since my best friend was in Michigan from Kansas and made the trip to the dress shop. Up North Bride

have fallen in love, and not just with my fiancĂŠ. But with D.I.Y wedding crafts. Maybe it's because I'm a detail oriented person. Or, because I can't sit still without keeping my hands busy. Either way, I've found some simple, fun crafts for wedding decorations. I decided to make most of the decorations due to our budget constraints. I also have time to make everything since we will be engaged for a year and a half. If you don't have time or you aren't artistically inclined I wouldn't suggest too many projects. Planning a wedding is stressful enough and you don't to be overwhelmed. The easiest way to start is to figure out what your theme is and how you want your wedding to feel. Do you want your atmosphere to be elegant or relaxed, modern or country? The biggest theme for our wedding is the state of Michigan. So naturally, I gravitated toward showcasing the Petoskey stone. I collected many Petoskey stones along beaches in Petoskey and Charlevoix over the course of a few days. Once they are polished we will place them on tables as decorations. I am hand-polishing mine and found all my materials at a local hardware store.
18 |upnorthbride.com
Before: Rough Petoskey stones before polishing.
After: Handpolished Petoskey stones.
MATERIALS:
1. Unpolished Petoskey stone 2. Silicon carbide sandpaper 220 grit, 400 grit, and, 600 grit. (Grit refers to the grain size of the sandpaper. The higher the number, the finer the grain or grit.) Make sure to use carbide sandpaper as it can get wet and lasts longer 3. Thick towels 5. Polishing powder or rubbing compound, (many car finish rubbing compounds work great) 6. Container of water
STEPS: 1. Dampen the stone then begin sanding with the 220 grit carbide sandpaper and rub the area of the stone with a steady, circular motion. Rinse the stone while sanding. Change the water often. Dry the stone. If you notice any scratches or marks continue to polish them off. The first sanding is the most important. It takes the longest time.
2. Repeat the above process using the 400 grit paper. This step should remove the scratches from the coarser paper and any white spots. Rinse, dry, and examine for scratches, rubbing out any that remain. 3. Complete the sanding process with the 600 grit paper. Sand even longer than you think you need to. Rinse and dry the stone. Examine the stone very carefully for scratches and/ or any abrasions. If any remain, go back to a coarser paper and repeat the steps as outlined above. All scratches must be removed before polishing. Don't be impatient, because the scratches will show even after they are polished. 4. Using another towel dab a small amount of either your polishing powder, (or, rubbing compound), on the damp towel. Use short, circular motions to polish. Add water to the towel as needed to keep the stone moving freely across the surface. If scratches show after polishing, go back to the 400 grit carbide sandpaper and work through the steps again. When you have finished polishing, buff the stone with a clean dry towel.
4.
Tissue paper tassel garland.

First take a piece of tissue paper and fold it length wise, then fold it width wise twice.
2.
nother way to decorate different spaces of your wedding is to use tissue paper tassels. I saw a photo of them on a wedding blog and thought they were a great way to add color and texture to parties. After I tried making a few I've streamlined the process. These are superinexpensive and can be as simple or crazy as you want them to be. If the tassels become curly after they are stored I found ironing them works fine.
Separate the tassels and roll them individually. While rolling make sure to prevent the fringe from becoming tangled.
5.
Twist the tassel from the center to the top of where the fringe begins.
6.
Materials: 1. Scissors Cut the paper into fringe. Make sure the folded creases are on the top.
2. Glue-gun 3. Cord or baker's twine 4. Pencil 5. Tissue paper
Wrap the center of the tassel around a pencil and twist and hot glue it to create the hanging loop.
7.
Directions:
3.
1. Fold a sheet of tissue paper lengthwise. Then fold it again width-wise.Then fold again width-wise. 2. Cut the paper into long strips. Make sure not to cut on the folded side. 3. Unfold. Cut down the middle. You should now have four sheets of paper. 4. Roll one of the papers, then twist. Cut the paper down the middle.
5. Take a pencil and create a loop around it.Twist a couple more times and secure with hot glue. Using the pencil creates a single-sized loop. This ensures all the tassels will be uniform.
Before stringing the tassels, measure the length of twine for the garland. Add the first tassel to the middle of the twine. Knot the tassel to the twine and work your way out to the edges.

reating a wedding gift registry? What do you register for? Creating a gift registry gives friends and family suggestions of what you and your fiancé may need to set up a household. Having options of items with different price-points also makes gift-giving easier for guests. Perhaps Aunt Martha wants to give you monogramed bath towels. She doesn't have to worry about color — your registry tells her the color of your bathroom(s). Having a gift registry can help prevent receiving multiple toaster ovens, or queen bedsheets

and you have a king size bed. Eugene Mercado, a manager at Bed, Bath & Beyond in Petoskey, says when couples come in, they are assigned a consultant who will escort them throughout the rooms of the store. "We ask them a lot of questions. Are you living together? Living at home? Who does the cooking? Do you bake? Entertain? This gives us a place to start. We can make suggestions based on what they have now, and what they may need in the future. Many couples are choosing every day dishes and basic white is popular. We can also show them what we call fine tabletop."
Mercado said many couples haven't thought of adding storage items to their registry. Food storage containers and closet organizers are helpful and practical gifts. "We keep our registry for 2 years and often friends and relatives will check to see what hasn't been fulfilled and choose those items for anniversary, birthday or holiday gifts." Registering with large chainstore retailers for wedding gifts will give out-of-town guests ease in purchasing a gift, having it gift-wrapped and delivered. Many local Northern Michigan retailers also have gift registries and offer unique items to choose

from. In Petoskey, Jordan Spence and Nelson Knill are planning their July 2015 wedding. The couple chose to register at Cutler's in Petoskey. "I like to shop where the staff is friendly and helpful. Cutler's has an wide variety of items not found in chain stores," said Jordan. For some, registering for household items might not be necessary. You or your financé may have an entire kitchen full of everything you need. Many couples are registering for honeymoons through online sites such as TravelersJoy. com. Betrothed couples choose honeymoon activities and expenses their guests can designate monetary gifts toward, such as chunks of airfare, hotel stays, train tickets or boat tours. "I was able to go on TravelersJoy.com site, customize our location, plans, interests and mustdo tourist stops … then people could go on and fund portions of them. It was so cool to see what people wanted us to see and do," said recent bride, Megan Parkes-Hacker, of Moments Photo Booth and Lasting Memories Bridal in Gaylord. Finally, your guests appreciate your handwritten, personal thank you note. Those who sent gifts are happy to hear you received theirs. A simple sincere thank you, mentioning the gift, can be quickly done. Traditionally, thank you notes should be sent within six months.

egan ParkesHacker met her husband Justin Hacker on the dirtbike track in 2010. "I had come home to Gaylord from Seattle, where I was living at the time to surprise my mom for her birthday. While I was home a few of my friends had gotten together to ride and I wanted to snap some action pictures. Justin and I didn't talk a whole lot that day but it gave us a chance to connect on Facebook when I reached out to share pictures later on," Megan said. She returned to Seattle and the two talked on and off by

phone but work schedules and the time difference made it difficult. Megan returned to Gaylord at Christmas and she and Justin began dating. Megan stayed a few months, and then returned to Seattle. "I was so worried about the distance but Justin kept assuring me that it would be fine. Three days after I went back to Seattle he called to say he was coming out to visit. I picked him up from the airport the next day. It wasn't until he got there that he told me he bought a one-way ticket." After about 6 months of living in Seattle the couple decided to move home to Gaylord to be closer to their families. Shortly
after the couple returned they started Moments Photo Booth, a traveling photo booth they take to weddings, senior open houses, expos and other events. "It's a lot of fun and sometimes I feel like a wedding crasher because we get to goof around with the guests. We've expanded the business and are now also doing wedding photography, senior photos, product photography and more." About a year later, the couple purchased their first home. " It hadn't been updated since the 70s. There was a lot of work to be done and we were very fortunate to be able to stay in our apartment until our home was move-in ready. We
purchased our home in March but Justin and I had started ring shopping the November before. We stumbled across a place in Petoskey called Arlington Jewelers. Everything they had was so gorgeous and Chris, one of the owners, explained that most of the pieces they made were custom designed. I thought that was just the neatest idea but never dreamed I would be able to design my own engagement ring and wedding band. Justin told me he wanted me to have exactly what I wanted so we started the process. All together it took about 4 months to design and make my ring. I knew when Justin went to pick up my ring because he sent me a picture of the bag seat-belted into the front seat. Then I waited, and waited, and waited some more. Finally our home was finished and we got to spend our first night in our first home. When I got back from the apartment with our pajamas and toiletries Justin was on one knee asking me to be his wife. It wasn't at all what I had imagined and I still can't believe he surprised me," Megan continued. In 2011 Megan began working at Lasting Memories Bridal in Gaylord, and has vast knowledge of and contact with many wedding vendors and venues. She and Matt chose Park in the Pines along Lake Charlevoix near Boyne City for their weekend wedding location. Park of the Pines is a church-owned campground on more than 24 acres of mostly wooded land, with
three terraces and 623 feet of frontage on Lake Charlevoix. Situated about 4 miles northwest of Boyne City, it is owned by the Community of Christ. The wedding ceremony took place on the stage in the camp auditorium and the reception was located in a large tent. "A few of our guests brought campers and RV's. More stayed in tents on the lower terrace, down by the water. One of my friends even set her tent up right on the beach. In the main lodge there are eight dorm style rooms with four bunk beds each. We reserved those mostly for family but I did put a handful of my college friends in a room together. From the sounds of it they had a blast. Justin and I stayed in a small cabin down on the lower terrace. It was so cute and I was happy to be camping." Megan's mother escorted her daughter and sang during the ceremony. The couple played the shoe game at our reception, and on Sunday had a church service for all the people that stayed the weekend to attend. Megan wanted a really natural, fresh picked, out-of-thegarden look with her wedding flowers, arranged by Nicole at Flowers by Evelyn in Gaylord. The girls bouquets each had a cameo type pendant with their initial on it. The guys boutonnieres had Lego men to represent them. " Justin and I had so much fun designing each guy. One was a cowboy, one was a race car driver, Justin's Lego man Continued on page 32 Up North Bride

wore a tux, and for his older brother, we found one of Josh's original Lego guys. Josh was so surprised and knew right away what it was." When asked if she had any suggestions for brides and grooms Megan offered the following. "My biggest suggestion would be make your wedding reflect you as a couple and your personalities. Don't worry about what people will think about your ideas. If it sounds good to you it'll be perfect for your wedding. We used old board games as our centerpieces. Justin and I are always having friends over for cards and games so it seemed only natural to incorporate them into our wedding. I loved looking out at our friends and family as some of them built Lego houses and others got into intense games of Sorry."

he sky’s the limit is one way to describe the wide range of fall and winter fashions for up north weddings this year. From internet connections to haute culture, designer creations, off-the-rack specials and resale treasures, it is all out there for brides to accessorize their wedding parties and create lasting memories. “We are seeing a lot of vintage styles and fall colors for barn weddings,” said Megan ParkesHacker of Lasting Memories Bridal Boutique in Gaylord. “Light golds and heavy ivories are more complimentary to the skin tones and go with the rustic chic theme.” Parkes-Hacker said that for holiday wedding brides are
choosing blues for the holidays and for Valentine’s Day — definitely red. Gerri Belfy at Petoskey Bridal & Tux is also seeing blues becoming very popular this fall. “For the bridal dresses oyster, alabaster and café covered by ivory lace is very popular,” said Belfy. “Lace is definitely in.” Designs with keyhole backs and cap sleeves are the choices of many brides at Petoskey Bridal and Tux as is the “fit and flair style.” That very stylish “trumpet” cut has some snags though. ParkesHacker said “Brides like the fitted ‘mermaid’ look but want something they can dance in. The A-line shapes works well for that.” The internet has opened a
wealth of opportunities for both buyers and sellers. Both of these stores work with national and international designers such as Maggie Sottero, Casablanca, Allure, and Alfred Angelo. The designer dresses available can be viewed on websites. After measurements are taken at the store and the order is placed, it generally takes 14 weeks for the dresses to arrive. Any alterations needed at that time are made at the store. Everyone recommends that wedding planning should be started at least six months in advance. Blue may be a popular color for bridesmaids right now but many brides are picking their favorite color for the wedding Continued on page 34 Up North Bride

and rather than doing the “one size fits all” look, they are letting their bridesmaids pick out their own dresses. Often they pick out styles that they know look good on them and can be worn again. There are also great options for brides who are not able to plan six months ahead. They can often pick out ready-made dresses from the racks. The stores all have tailors available for any needed alterations. For those on limited budgets, many resale and consignment store sell wedding dresses. “We get some beautiful wedding gowns donated to us for resale,” said Beth Burfield of the Gold Mine Resale Store east of Petoskey. “Right now we have two gorgeous dresses that are in perfect condition.” Both dresses are priced at $100. One has pearl beading and the other is ivory with pastel peach. Their other wedding dresses range between $30 and $50. These dresses though are specific sizes. The Gold Mine also has many evening dresses that work well as bridesmaid dresses or mother-of-the bride dresses. For 52 years in Petoskey, the Clothes Post has been outfitting men for weddings. Jeff Pagel, the owner, said that black is traditional but various shades of gray are very strong this year. “About half of our weddings are local and the other half are destination weddings,” said Pagel. “We do the measurements and give advice to the party. We rent out of Minneapolis which in today’s world is right next door." Petoskey Bridal also rents tuxedoes. “We are seeing many men choosing the retro 50s look with slim fits and narrow lapels. Light gray, steel gray are the new favorites,” said Belfy. With such a wide range of styles and price ranges available locally, on the internet, with alterations easily done no matter what the budget or design and color choices brides have a great selection for this very special day.

our wedding day — most wonderful — you smiled, hugged and kissed, walked through grass or through sand at a beach. You ate, drank and danced the night away. Your wedding gown — so beautiful — and perhaps expensive, may now have traces of perspiration, makeup, perfume, hairspray, lipstick, grass, food, cake and champagne. Time is of the essence when it comes to getting your dress cleaned. Jackie Yoo, owner of A-1 Dry Cleaners in Petoskey, recommends bringing your gown to a dry cleaner as quickly as possible following your wedding day. "The sooner the better," Yoo said. "Gown hems are usually where we may need extra treatment and may have to clean the dress more than once." Set-in stains are harder to remove. Synthetic fabrics are a bit more stain-resistant than natural fabrics, Yoo notes. "Silk or cotton is harder to clean," he said. "Wine stains may
oxidize, which means it turns to rust which is difficult to remove. Food particles may mold." Arrange to have your dress taken for cleaning by a friend or family member while you're away on your honeymoon, if possible. "We tell brides to not worry about spots and enjoy the day," said Bryan Bradford, owner of Bradford Master Dry Cleaners in Petoskey. "We have seen everything on bridal gowns … food and wine ... dirt, grass and makeup. Dresses that have been worn when 'mudding' are challenging." The cleaner will look over your gown, he said, to make certain it can cycle through the cleaning process. Each dress is analyzed on a case by case basis. Both cleaners say to allow one to two weeks for your gown to be cleaned. Many brides will choose to also have their gowns preserved. "We order specialized boxes to put the gowns in to keep them dust and moth-free," said Yoo. Bradford has multiple sizes of preservation boxes, he said. "Once your dress is cleaned and all set to go, we place it in a
windowed box with special acidfree tissue paper and seal your dress inside." The dress box is then placed in a sturdy protective box to further keep the gown box from damage. "We have preserved bridal gowns, family heirlooms ... christening gowns. It's a one or two week process for us to clean, spot clean, steam and pack your treasured garment," Bradford said. At Bradford's shop, Elizabeth Donald specializes in wedding gowns. She often is involved with steaming wedding gowns before a wedding. "Then, when it is brought in for cleaning/preserving, I get to handle it again," she said. Layers of acid-free tissue paper are placed into a box and the gown is carefully folded into the box. Buttons are buttoned, lacing removed and placed in the folds of the dress. Donald makes certain the bodice of the dress is arranged to fit within the window. "Brides like to look at their dress before storing it. We are preserving something beautiful for perhaps a daughter to wear," she added.
