I
’m nor mally one t o roll my e yes when I hear Christmas songs before the day after Thanksgiving. It just doesn’t seem right to usher in the holiday before the previous one is gone. But t his ye ar I’ ve g one t hrough an unprecedented although not ent irely surprising shif t. M y Chr istmas s eason b egan in October, before most Halloween candy hit the shelves, as I st arted to wrap my mind around this edition of HomeLife. Now, I’ m finding it har d t o r esist t he glow. The holidays have always been a hap py time for me. Christmas Eve is a day I hold in e steem s econd t o none. D escending the st airs t o m y g randparents’ ba sement I k now j ust what w ill g reet me — lot s of noise and laughter, a Polish dinner and the kind of love only a f amily can give. Christmas day is spent with the other side of the family, the food piled high on tables, more
laughter and more love. Recent years have seen a new tradition as well, as my friends gather from near and far for a feast of our own. Just writing about it makes me smile. The holida ys ar e als o a time of t ogetherness f or t he home s f ound w ithin this issue. Two examples are the Paulsen and Walker residences. It’s amazing how
both da bble in e legance and f amily liv ing, str iking a balanc e b etween up scale and humble. Relatives de scend on t he K elso c abin in W ilderness, a long- standing tradition for t he f amily. A t m y first st ep in to t he home, the word cozy was in my mind and lingered t here un til I st epped out . And the Schaller home is trimmed to the nines, the tr ee and fireplace glow ing br ight and casting an aura of warmth throughout the great room. And s o, b etween Chr istmas tr ees and garland, lights and c andles aglow , I ha ve caught the holiday fever. I hop e w ithin these pages you find the inspiration I ha ve. En joy t he holida y s eason, and happy new year!

Kitchen: Heart of the house THE WALKER HOME
Entering Rob and Wendy Walker’s kitchen, it’s not hard to imagine the sounds of laughter, clinking glasses and merriment. And t hat’s of ten t he s cene s et dur ing t he holiday season. The kitchen is open to the dining area and living room, which allows guests to roam e asily f rom one end of t he space to the ot her. B ut man y c an’t s eem t o le ave t he kitchen. “This really is the heart of the house,” Wendy said. “ When you ha ve a par ty, t his is wher e (the guests) are. It’s an inviting space.” The a pproximately 800- square-foot area is en tirely by de sign. The W alkers b ought the home in 1996, and W endy said she had many years to plan the space she wanted. At Rob’s suggestion, she b egan a c lip b ook, to which she adde d items until the home w as remodeled in 2005 by F isher and W alker Builders of Petoskey. What the Walkers have now is space that suits their family and their style. The dining ar ea is flanked on one side by the liv ing r oom and t he ot her by t he k itchen, e ach of whic h f eatures a v aulted, wo od plank ceiling. Suspended by black chain 12

Color The color scheme of the rooms was inspired by the floral pattern on two covered chairs. The walls are light yellow, with warm and cottage-like greens, blue and reds on fabric completing the scheme. White cabinets in the kitchen complement the feel. The range hood is a natural wood shade, tying into the cupboards underneath the island and the dining table. Beneath the hood is the backsplash, which features a large block of handmade, four-layer, kiln-fused glass tiles by former Harbor Springs resident Stephen Palmer.

from the ceiling of the kitchen are two metal fish, which were hanging in Tapperoony’s before they were a Chr istmas gift from Rob t o Wendy. The kitchen was designed by Br odie Smith at North Country Cabinets in Petoskey. One of the unique features is a two-le vel island, w ith the upper level shaped in a quarter-circle. The lower level mimics the two straight edges above, and features an inset prep sink. “We wanted a counter, we wanted to fill the space, and we had t hose three chairs,” Wendy said, indicating the bar st ools tucked in under the high counter of the island. Covering t hese sur faces, along w ith t he other c ountertops, is g ranite, an ide al sur face for Wendy’s cooking passion. A m ust was the six-burner Wolf gas range and oven, which also features a griddle, as well as two dishwashers. “Both are full every day. I cook all our meals,” Wendy said. The treats that come from the kitchen find their w ay t o t he island f or par ties, w ith t he lower level a buffet line with appetizers served from up t op. With lar ger par ties, t he dining room t able chairs ar e removed in favor of it becoming the food table. Above the table is a whit e tin c eiling which reflects ligh t t hat str eams in f rom t he gla ss doors leading to a patio. The patio has an outdoor kitchen, complete with large ga s g rill and mini f ridge. Inset into the granite countertop next to the grill is space that double s a s a fireplace and c harcoal g rill. Wendy said she g rills year-round, and t he fire is a popular feature for both her kids and party guests in the cooler months. On t he pa tio is a lar ge gla ss t able, whic h the Walkers constructed themselves. The base was made by st arting w ith an up side dow n metal gar bage can f or shape, then adding rocks around it and wrapping the entire thing in chicken wire. Sandwiched between the base and glass top is a reinforced antique door. Rob’s f amily had ow ned a f urniture st ore in St. Ignace for nearly 140 years, and Wendy said there were pieces that just had to be in the new space. One is a h utch, which has its own space inset into a dining room wall. Nearby, a player piano o ccupies a space in the living room, close enough t o the couches and fireplace that those seated can lend t heir voices in a song. “We’ve b een k nown to play the piano and sing to the late hours,” Wendy said.
