Jordan River Action Group
Protecting our Jordan, one river bag at a time. The Jordan River Action Group (JRAG) originated in 2008. The group became a 501C (3) non-profit organization in 2015. When the Michigan Natural Rivers Board was first organized, Sherman Thomas was appointed as one of the board members. Living on the Jordan River, Sherm and his wife Peggy, experienced many years of enjoyment as the river flowed by their home. Sherm’s wife Peggy was concerned about the amount of refuse floating down river. Prior to Peggy passing away, she made Sherm promise to do whatever he could to help keep the Jordan River as clean as possible. Thus began the Jordan River Action Group (JRAG). In 2008, Sherm solicited help from a couple friends and started a campaign to build collection booths for locations at access sites Rogers Bridge, Webster Bridge, Old State Road, and Graves Crossing. In 2009, the first year of collection, 145 bags of trash, and 15,000 returnable cans and bottles were received. Since 2009, over 1,200 bags of trash and well over 100,000 returnable cans and bottles have been collected from these access sites. JRAG purchases 3,000 Red River Bags every two years. These bags are used by individuals floating the river to secure their trash and returnable products. In the event of a turnover, no trash or returnables will end up in the river. All funds collected from the returnable products are distributed back into the community thru organizations who maintain the collection sites. To help support the Jordan River Action Group’s mission statement to keep Michigan’s first wild and scenic river pristine for all to enjoy, please become a “Supporting Member” by making a $20 Membership Donation. All members will receive a “JRAG Supporter” display sticker and will be recognized on the organization’s website and brochure. For more information on the JRAG, contact Tom “Tinker” Breakey at 231-675-5489 or email to tinkerb5489@sbcglobal.net. Membership donations can be mailed to Jordan River Action Group, P.O. Box 215, East Jordan, MI 49727.

Unique Attractions RAVEN HILL DISCOVERY CENTER
An American Classic The thought of American classics brings with it a certain nostalgia and creates images in the visitor’s mind of times past. It might bring back memories of classic toys and games, music, art or architecture. Or it could pique a visitor’s interest in colonial times with oneroom schools or pioneer living. American classics could also bring back other, more “unconventional” remembrances of “oldfashioned” appliances for cooking, cleaning, laundry, sewing or of “old” communications, like radios, telephones and televisions from American times past. These American classic memories are captured in many of the exhibits, facilities and programs at Raven Hill, making the visitor experience a real classic one that is traditional and enduring, with a timeless quality. For examples, in the Main Museum, visitors may get involved in the Carrom or Skittles games or play with old fashioned marble rolls and kaleidoscopes. They may explore a variety of traditional music instruments. Alternatively, families can spend time in the old-fashioned one-room schoolhouse, with everyone taking a turn at being teacher. The Evolving Technology (ET) Building has timelines that show the changes in daily life and communications over time. A visit to Raven Hill Discovery Center has classic experiences and many more. Raven Hill Discovery Center is the only place
in northern Lower Michigan where children and adults can link science, history & the arts with hands-on activities and explorations both indoors and outdoors. Connections emerge through exhibits, facilities & programs, that provide opportunities for all ages to learn, create, grow and play. Come find your own American classics at Raven Hill soon in the main museum or outside in the Music Garden; Beyond Jurassic Park walk; One-Room School House; ET Building; Accessible Tree House and the Ancient World. Learning experiences at Raven Hill abound. Some exhibits remain popular year after year, such as the animals, treehouse and pyramid, but American classic experiences await visitors too. Raven Hill continually provides a place for scientific exploration, historical reflection and immersion in the arts. Visit Raven Hill Discovery Center soon and experience the classic worlds of science, history and the arts for yourself. Open weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Open year round from noon to 4 pm on Saturdays and 2 pm to 4 pm on Sundays, over most holidays and always by appointment. Classes and group field trips can be scheduled. For more information, contact the Center at 231.536.3369, email info@miravenhill.org or check out our website: www.MiRavenHill.org

Meet the animals, see the wool processing areas, and shop for beautiful skeins of unique yarns - including “Petoskey Stone” and the crazy-popular “Crazy.”

CHARLEVOIX COUNTY COMMISSION ON AGING
The Commission on Aging and the East Jordan Senior Center supports you in becoming an American Classic right here in your Own Community! We work closely with seniors and community collaborators to bring to life as many services, positive opportunities and experiences as possible for our local aging community. These valuable resources and this community relationship is an integral part of what makes East Jordan and Charlevoix County such an attractive place for the aging community today and into the future. We understand that our aging community is not “old” any longer. They have different needs, are at different levels of community participation and interaction and many are not only young at heart….they are young in mind, body and spirt so as the needs of the aging community evolve, we to will also evolve to make sure we are meeting the “seniors” at their need and service level.
there is something for everyone. We serve fresh, homemade and home-styled foods; are a social meeting place for friends and family; host and sponsor educational and fun classes, activities and programs, musical entertainment, and so much more. We also provide home services such as Home Delivered Meals for the home bound, Personal Care for those recovering from an illness or challenge, Homemaking, and Respite Care. All the services supporting seniors at those more challenging times. We also encourage our aging community to get back into the community they love and live in through our Travel Club, Silver Screen Movie Club, Veterans Social and Lunch and other upcoming opportunities. We invite you to visit our center and learn more about what aging looks like today as we are actively changing what aging looks like and feels like in Charlevoix County!
Our East Jordan Senior Center is a vibrant collective of our aging community where :: www.ejchamber.org ::

What’s New in Town Socks Kick is a Michigan based company formed by former Rotary Exchange Student Baris Atmaca from Turkey. After visiting East Jordan numerous times over the years with his family the idea of forming a company in Northern Michigan has become a reality. Socks Kick
For the past 35 years his family has manufactured socks and legwear. The company does a full cycle of production; starting from knitting, finishing, packaging, inspecting, marketing and exporting. All of their socks are knitted on authentic vintage machines using only the finest quality yarns made for a superior fit and finish. They provide a refined feel that is immediately noticeable to the touch. The company aims to expand statewide and nationally. Their next step after this will be to move some of the production from Turkey to here to make MADE IN U.S.A. socks. With the support of the community, Socks Kicks expects to expand while increasing local investment and creating jobs.

Other Interesting Stuff Ellsworth Community Square
Train Move & Park Plans Since 1961, E.J.&S.R.R. Engine #6 has “lived” in Memorial Park in downtown East Jordan. In early June, however, the nearly 200,000 pound train that dates back to the city’s logging days, was moved to its new location in Sportsman’s Park. This location makes it easier for people to come see it, take pictures and celebrate its history. Moving the train frees up park space and is a first step in the new harbor park plan which a is key element of East Jordan’s downtown economic development.
In 2011, emergency fire crews responded to a blaze at the corner of Center and Main Street in Downtown Ellsworth. The building was considered a complete loss and had to be bulldozed. However, out of the ashes the community had been presented with a wonderful opportunity; a vacant lot in the center of downtown right next to the Township Hall. Once debris was removed and spring had sprung, community members realized how great the space would be for a town square; a place where the community could gather to celebrate events, a place to meet & congregate after town meetings, and a logical space to invest in community assets like public restrooms and an open air pavilion. Ellsworth Community Schools Ellsworth Community School has a long and distinguished history of offering unequaled educational opportunities. Our motto “Big School Opportunities, Small School Relationships” summarizes our approach to education. Each student at Ellsworth is nurtured and encouraged to sample many academic and extra-curricular activities and to develop his or her unique talents. Most students actively participate in numerous before and after school activities while attending Ellsworth Community School. With a small student to teacher/staff ratio, all Ellsworth students have access to opportunities that are virtually unheard of in other schools its size, including; free developmental preschool, full day kindergarten, on-line learning opportunities for advanced classes and credit recovery, college credit at no charge to students, music/ art/physical education for all students, iPads in every classroom, one-one laptops for all high school students, and access to career/technical education programs in graphic arts, agriculture, and building trades.
the Center for Michigan. The Center for Michigan also ranked Ellsworth Elementary fifth out of over 600 elementary schools statewide. In 2014, Ellsworth Community School was named a REWARD school by the State of Michigan for outstanding test scores. Ellsworth Middle/High School was awarded the Winners Circle Award from the Michigan Association of School Administrators for innovative school programming for its unique spring term Lancer Leap program. We are annually ranked as one of America’s best high schools in US News and World Report, and continue to outperform other schools in the region based on standardized test scores. Ellsworth clearly offers its students unequaled opportunities. Ellsworth Community School is a family friendly environment where parents and the community are an integral part of the every day activities of the school. Ellsworth is not just a top-notch school - it is a major employer in the area, a gathering place for our community, and a critical component of the community we call Ellsworth.

East Jordan Public Schools The excitement and Classic American spirit is in the air at East Jordan Public Schools. How does EJPS fit into the “Classic America” mold? By building a foundation with a world class education combined with the small school feel and caring environment that our parents have come to trust. Our goal is to provide our students with experiences that will last a lifetime……and memories to share forever. EJPS comprises a vibrant part of the community and takes its job of educating East Jordan’s youth seriously. We embrace the challenge of blending the many voices of our community who desire schools that deliver a world-class education to all students. It is the goal of East Jordan Public Schools to provide a climate of academic excellence for all students. Our school and community share the vision of empowering students to make wise life choices and become productive citizens and of helping them to realize their dreams by seeing an unfathomed world of possibilities. The School Year promises to be another positive chapter in the storied history of East Jordan, as our students and staff build on our past success while preparing for future accomplishments. Red Devil Pride is at an alltime high, and the future is bright for all. In the classrooms, on stage, and on the field of competition East Jordan students continue to make us proud. We are pleased to boast a wide variety of academic courses, and continue to grow while challenging our students to create, design, build, and apply. Our fine arts programs continue to produce world class artists and opportunities. Red Devil athletic teams have established themselves as a Lake Michigan Conference power and provide experiences that truly set our students apart. There is no doubt that our community should be proud of our kids, and the support that we have received has been much appreciated. Thank you to everyone
who has contributed to making East Jordan a place to be proud of – please continue to be first-hand witnesses to the great things happening in your community! While academic studies and preparation is a primary focus, it is also recognized that in order to prepare our students to be wellrounded, productive members of a community, we must encourage them to take pride in all areas of their growth. Whether through athletics, the arts, community service or simply treating others with respect, East Jordan Pride is a commitment to always doing your best. The phrase “We Are EJ” has also evolved into students recognizing that “I Am EJ,” as they reflect on and are recognized for how they contribute to their communities, go out of their way to benefit others, and push themselves to achieve a higher level of excellence. Through this, our main purpose is to encourage students to take pride in how they represent themselves and how they treat others. We have a tremendous community and a school that is taking strides each day to help our students maximize their potential and accomplish meaningful goals. I am grateful to all those who sacrifice their time, money, and energy to allow our programs to exist and grow. Thank you for your support – we will continue to do our best to make you proud. For those of you who are new to the East Jordan, we would love the opportunity to show you our school district and introduce you to the remarkable staff and students that make up our school family. Let’s share in this adventure together…..and share in the experiences that will last a lifetime!
We are……. EJ!

City of East Jordan On behalf of the City Commission, staff and officials, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the City of East Jordan, “Where River, Lake and Friendly People Meet!” Whether you are just passing through, vacationing or relocating to our community, you’ll determine that you’ve made the right choice in East Jordan. Our region is blessed to have the assortment of natural assets which are not typically found in most rural communities. East Jordan is certainly a “year-round playground” that commonly includes biking, hiking, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and several sightseeing opportunities. The city has over 100 acres of parks and recreation facilities that host several events, organized activities, and festivals. Our community’s growth and sustainability is continually being planned and assessed by our local leaders. Our city has made great strides in recent years with both infrastructure and placemaking plans that has resulted in considerable advancements to our city. As you enter our community, you will notice new entryway and way finding signage, which significantly improve guidance toward the city’s destinations.
So, whether you plan a kayaking trip down the Jordan River, a camping adventure at the Tourist Park, or just want to stop in and have a cup of coffee, East Jordan has a little something for everyone! We look forward to seeing you soon!
Tom Cannon City Administrator
In keeping up with the new wayfinding signage theme, a new Elm Pointe sign was installed replacing the old sign which was also damaged.
City Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new Wastewater Treatment Plant location which is now underway. This project would not have been possible without the help and support from USDA Rural Development. We look forward to improving aging infrastructure and becoming more efficent.

Ellsworth & Atwood Ellsworth, founded in 1881 and incorporated as a village in 1938, is located on the scenic Breezeway and Chain O’ Lakes. If you are seeking a great place to live, retire, or play, Ellsworth is the place. With its park system, waterways, scenic roads, and snowmobile trails, Ellsworth is a great area to take advantage of Michigan’s Natural Resources during the four seasons. The village has just adopted an updated Master Plan and Recreation Plan and is working on becoming a certified Redevelopment Ready Community with MEDC. Ellsworth is also presently doing a feasibility study on a sanitary waste water system. Ellsworth Community Park is located on 4 acres in the heart of the Village of Ellsworth on the west shore of Ellsworth Lake which is part of the Chain O’ Lakes. The Park features Michigan’s largest outdoor public Archery Range, a pavilion, restrooms/multipurpose building, playground area, fishing pier, boat dock, walking paths/observation deck, Labyrinth, and sledding hill. The pavilion is a 50’ X 80’ structure that is used for social gatherings. The Labyrinth is one of if not the largest Labyrinth in the Northern Midwest. The village will be updating some of the pathways to make them more universally acceptable and install an universal kayak/canoe launch. The Community Park is also the site of the Community Pig Roast (see page 13) held the third Saturday in June. The Ellsworth River Park is located on Ellsworth Lake next to the Wooden Shoe Campground. It contains a lovely sandy beach, boat launch, playground, and fishing platforms. It is the starting point of Paddle Antrim (see page 15) held the 2nd weekend after Labor Day. Wooden Shoe Campground overlooks Ellsworth Lake and the Village. It has a great swimming beach, boat launch, pavilion, and good fishing with a fish cleaning station. Wooden Shoe has 45 modern, large sites with water & electricity, free high-speed wireless internet, dump station, on-site 24-hour management, private showers, and restrooms. Camping can be reserved any time. Antrim Creek Natural Area (Atwood): 156 acre parcel in Banks Township. Conservation of the wetlands and sand dunes while allowing enjoyment by the public. Hiking trails and boardwalks allow access to remote areas of the property, with strategically placed benches and overlooks for resting and taking in the beauty. Small boats, kayaks and canoes can be carefully launched via the north entrance. Parking is available at both entrances with outdoor toilets nearby. Banks Township Park (Atwood): One acre, peaceful park overlooking Lake Michigan. Picnic tables, grills, benches and an outdoor toilet with ample room for a volleyball game on the upper level. Access to the beach is via a sloped, grassy path or set of steps. The BEST sunsets!
