AYLORD — What are you doing Friday night? If Jordan Awrey has anything to say about it, you will be heading downtown to Snowbelt Brewing Company to treat your ears and sip a few beers. Awrey, who is the “chief engineer of marketing” at Snowbelt Brewing Company, 132 W. Main St., is excited about the “Summer Music Lineup,” from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. every Friday from June 1 through Sept. 28, featuring an impressive roster of musicians from Northern Michigan and beyond. The lineup includes local favorites including Jake Allen, Oh Brother Big Sister, A Brighter Bloom, Distant Stars, Watching for Foxes, Adam Hoppe and Kellerville. Acoustic guitarist Cousin Curtiss is coming in from Denver, Colorado, and country singer Sutton James Pappanikolas, from Nashville, Tennessee. The Kari Lynch Band, popular in Grand Rapids, will travel north for a gig. “My biggest goal is for people to know that this is the place to
come for music on Friday night,” Awrey said. “We are trying to bring musicians from different parts of the world to our establishment, while always keeping the local scene alive. We travel to get our music — but keep it local.”

more beautiful. In all, it is now a “cool” city, on par with the other popular communities in this region. It is in that Jeremy Speer spirit that the Herald Times Herald Times editor created its new-and-improved Extra section. We completed readership surveys that told us our readership enjoys entertainment coverage. We engaged in onthe-street interviews that told us there is nothing that exists where they get enough of it. In taking to this feedback, our staff has carefully crafted the revamped Extra, which launches today. We will narrow our focus on entertainment, food and the arts. There will be features on local entertainers and events and a robust calendar and restaurant special listing, all with a fresh new look. We want to give you quality options. You can find Extra in a
number of places. It is a part of each Friday edition, and will be also included in our weekly Marketplace product. You can also find it at select “hot spots” in town. Check us out online at gaylordextra.com and you will also find more entertainment content at our Facebook (Gaylord Herald Times) and Instagram (@gaylordheraldtimes) pages. And while we love all of Northern Michigan and what it has to offer, we are going to focus tightly on the Gaylord area. It is our goal for readers to look to Extra as the go-to aid in helping them determine their after-work plans. If you have suggestions on how to improve Extra or have something you’d like featured within it, please contact Frances Collazo, entertainment content producer, at fcollazo@ gaylordheraldtimes.com or myself at editor@gaylordheraldtimes.com. We are excited to kick off the summer with a new product, and we hope you’re as excited as we are about entertainment in Gaylord!

GAYLORD — Saturn Booksellers in downtown Gaylord will host bestselling author Mary Kay Andrews for a reading and signing for her new novel, “The High Tide Club,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 31. Tickets are $5 and are redeemable as $5 toward any purchase the evening of the event. “The High Tide Club” is a delightful novel about new love, old secrets, and the kind of friendship that transcends generations. When 99-year-old heiress Josephine Bettendorf Warrick summons Brooke Trappnell to Talisa Island, her 20,000-acre remote barrier island home, Brooke is puzzled. Everybody in the South has heard about the eccentric millionaire mistress of Talisa, but Brooke has never met her. Josephine’s cryptic note says she wants to discuss an important legal matter with Brooke, who is an attorney, but Brooke knows that Mrs. Warrick has long been a client of a prestigious Atlanta law firm. Over a few meetings, the ailing Josephine spins a tale of old friendships at a time when World War II was looming; when secrets

hen I started working at the Herald Times, I was in my early 20s and like most in my age bracket, was looking for social things to do outside of work. I enjoyed golfing, and there was plenty of opportunity for that, but otherwise there wasn’t a ton of after-hours options. Gaylord was a quaint place, a community of good people and an area where outdoor recreation opportunities abound. But it wasn’t a happening place. Oh, how the times have changed. After weathering the recession that hit all corners of the country, Gaylord has experienced an impressive renaissance that is a joy to have watched develop first-hand. It has grown a unique and highquality restaurant and nightlife scene. It has increased its arts offerings. Live music taking place all spring and summer long in a variety of venues. Gaylord has a vibrant downtown that is more walkable and
