A WINDOW TO YOUR OVERALL HEALTH Your oral health is more important than you might realize. Get the facts about how the health of your mouth, teeth and gums can affect your general health. BY MAYO CLINIC STAFF

Did you know that your oral health can offer clues about your overall health — or that problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body? Understand the intimate connection between oral health and overall health and what you can do to protect yourself.

What’s the connection between oral health and overall health?

Like many areas of the body, your mouth is teeming with bacteria — most of them harmless. Normally the body’s natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, can keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. In addition, certain medications — such as decongestants, antihistamines, painkillers and diuretics — can reduce saliva flow. Saliva washes away food and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth, helping to protect you from microbial invasion or overgrowth that might lead to disease. Studies also suggest that oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with periodontitis — a severe form of gum disease — might play a role in some diseases. In addition, certain diseases, such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS, can lower the body’s resistance to infection, making oral health problems more severe.

What conditions may be linked to oral health?

Your oral health might affect, be affected by, or contribute to various diseases and conditions, including: — Endocarditis. Endocarditis is an infection of the inner lining of your heart (endocardium). Endocarditis

typically occurs when bacteria or other germs from another part of your body, such as your mouth, spread through your bloodstream and attach to damaged areas in your heart. — Cardiovascular disease. Some research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke might be linked to the inflammation and infections that oral bacteria can cause. — Pregnancy and birth. Periodontitis has been linked to premature birth and low birth weight. — Diabetes. Diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection — putting the gums at risk. Gum disease appears to be more frequent and severe among people who have diabetes. Research shows that people who have gum disease have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels. — HIV/AIDS. Oral problems, such as painful mucosal lesions, are common in people who have HIV/ AIDS. — Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis — which causes bones to become weak and brittle — might be linked with periodontal bone loss and tooth loss. — Alzheimer’s disease. Tooth loss before age 35 might be a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. — Other conditions. Other conditions that might be linked to oral health include Sjogren’s syndrome — an immune system disorder that causes dry mouth — and eating disorders. Because of these potential links, be sure to tell your dentist if you’re taking any medications or have had any changes in your overall health — especially if you’ve had any recent illnesses or you have a chronic condition, such as diabetes.

day. For example: — Brush your teeth at least twice a day. — Floss daily. — Eat a healthy diet and limit between-meal snacks. — Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if

MUNSON HAS YOU COVERED Munson Medical Center is first in Northern Michigan to offer patients high-tech heart failure monitoring solution Munson Medical Center is the first facility in Northern Michigan to implant a new miniaturized, wireless monitoring sensor to manage heart failure (HF). The CardioMEMS HF system is proven to significantly reduce hospital admissions when used by physicians to manage heart failure. This innovative, groundbreaking technology is currently available at only two other hospitals in the state and 48 other hospitals in the United States. The CardioMEMS device was implanted into the first two patients at Munson Medical Center on Feb. 6, 2015. Both women had heart failure with troublesome symptoms and had been hospitalized one or more times with heart failure during the past year. The CardioMEMS HF system features a sensor that is implanted in the pulmonary artery to directly measure the pressure in this blood vessel, which reflects the pressures within the heart. The sensor is implanted through a vein in the leg, similar to a heart catheterization procedure, and the patient goes home the some day. About 90 percent of patients admitted to the hospital for heart failure have shortness of breath because of fluid buildup in the lungs. This fluid buildup leads to a vicious cycle for some patients which results in repeated hospitalizations. “Research shows that pulmonary artery pressure starts to rise in these patients one to three weeks before the patient notices any change in symptoms or weight,” said Dino Recchia, MD, FACC, director of the Munson Heart Failure Clinic. Dr. Recchia performed the first procedures and is board certified in advanced heart failure transplant cardiology. This new technology has been shown to reduce the rate of hospitalization for heart failure by nearly 40 percent by enabling frequent clinician monitoring without the need for additional clinic or hospital visits.

Dino Recchia, MD, FACC “The device allows us to monitor these pressures on a daily basis and transmits those pressures to our heart failure clinic team wirelessly over the Internet,” Recchia said. “We can then immediately act on the information by managing medications and other treatment options before the patient ever experiences any worsening in their condition and prevent hospitalization and improve quality of life.” Daily sensor readings are transmitted from the patient’s home as the patient reclines on a special pillow with an antenna. The patient presses a button on a portable electronic unit and his or her pulmonary artery pressure is measured and sent electronically to a website that can be viewed by a physician from any device with Internet access. If a patient has readings outside of set parameters, an alert will be sent to their physician’s smartphone. Two days after the first patient was implanted at Munson Medical Center, Recchia received an alert on his smartphone that one of the patients had a significant increase in her pulmonary artery pressures. He contacted her and found she had eaten a meal with a lot of sodium the

night before but was feeling fine. He changed her medication dose and her pressures returned to baseline over the next 48 hours. “This is a real example of averting a problem before it ever had time to develop into something more serious. This type of advancement in real time monitoring of patients is a game changer for patients with difficult-tomanage heart failure,” he said. More than 5 million Americans are affected by a growing epidemic of heart failure. Each year more than 600,000 new cases of heart failure are diagnosed, leading to frequent hospitalizations, a reduced quality of life, and premature death. “Treating heart failure effectively requires a team approach like the one used

THE FACTS ON HEARING LOSS

Many people wonder when, or if, they should have their hearing tested. There is no “right” age to have your hearing tested, as hearing loss can occur at any age. Unfortunately, a slowly-developing hearing loss can be difficult to detect. Unless others point out sounds we miss, we have no idea that we have not heard a sound in our environment. Even if you think your hearing is normal, scheduling a hearing evaluation is a great idea to have a baseline hearing level to which you can compare future hearing tests. There are, however, people who are at greater risk for hearing loss. If you currently work, or have worked, around loud noises, if you shoot guns without using hearing protection, or if members of your family have hearing loss, it is a good idea to have your hearing tested. Occasionally, one ear may hear better than the other. If you feel that your hearing is not equal in both ears, you should have your hearing evaluated. If you don’t fall under any of the categories listed above, you may not be certain whether or not you need a hearing evaluation. The following questions may help you decide if you need to have your hearing tested: Do others complain that you have the television volume set too high? Do you feel that people often mumble? Do you have trouble understanding others when there is background noise? Are you avoiding social situations because you can’t understand what is being said? Do family members or friends comment that you are either not hearing what is said, or hearing incorrectly? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you should consider having a complete hearing evaluation performed by a licensed audiologist. Following the hearing evaluation, the audiologist will discuss your results with you and discuss possible solutions to the difficulties you are encountering. A hearing loss may be caused by permanent damage to your organ of hearing, or something that is medically treatable: too much wax in your ear canal or an ear infection, for example. Your physician may request that you have a hearing test for other reasons, as well: people experiencing

dizziness will often need to have their hearing tested. Certain medications may affect hearing, so your doctor will tell you about that and monitor your hearing while you are on the medication. How does this process work? You start with a hearing evaluation, which most insurances cover with a referral from your primary care doctor. After this appointment you can schedule an appointment with an audiologist to review your hearing loss and discuss hearing aid options to give you a good idea of what might work for you; hearing aid styles, differences in technology, realistic expectations and whatever other questions you might have. This is an informative appointment where there is no cost for you, so if you have any concerns or would just like to learn a bit more about the options that are out there, then give us a call.

Who can have hearing loss? • Approximately 20 percent of adults in the United States have a hearing loss, roughly 48 million! • For those over 65 years of age, 1 out of 3 people has a hearing loss • For children, about 2-3 children per every 1,000 have a hearing loss • 60 percent of those hearing impaired are in the workforce or educational settings

What are signs of hearing loss? • Need to request for repetition • Difficulty following conversation of two or more people • People sound muffled or like they are mumbling • The television or radio needs to be at a high level • Inappropriate response in conversation • Ringing in your ears
