a note from the

T

he Murphy’s Law of HomeLife: When you’re looking to take photographs with green lawns and a bud or two on the trees, it will snow. That’s the predicament photographer Randy Goss and I found ourselves in when that fateful snowstorm blew through in April. The storm blanketed us the day before one shoot and three days before another. Time was tight, and the panic set in. But then, thankfully, the situation turned itself around almost as quickly as Michigan weather when a warm rain fell and turned the grass almost green. In this issue, you’ll find three homes that stunned us for different reasons. One, with a view of Walloon Lake, was comforting in its easy style. Another in Birchwood was awash in hues of brown and rich details, renovated from a look

that was pure cottage. And the final is a carriage house/cottage in Charlevoix, which feels twice as big inside as it appears outside. Many thanks to the homeowners for letting us step across the thresholds. We brought our focus in from whole houses to elements of them in our other three articles. Bridges are a unique land-

scape fixture at some homes, and we explore the creations of one local woodworker on three Northern Michigan estates. Looking ahead to summer months and outdoor parties, we talked with local retailers about some of their favorite and most popular ways to enhance outdoor entertaining space. And finally, a bird-themed product guide offers items that bring the feathered flyers indoors. Hopefully by the time this HomeLife finds its way to your hands, we will be well on our way to a summer of sunshine and warm weather, with the snow of winter melted from memory. I, for one, will be glad for it.

Don’t let the size of this cottage fool you By Maggie Peterson • Photography by G. Randall Goss

“B

erdan Cottage” performs a magic trick — the inside looks double the size of the exterior. The illusion was intentional. When the homeowners went to renovate the 70- to 80-year-old cottage in Charlevoix, they had to follow city ordinance. This meant staying to the original footprint. The cottage, which was built by Ron Way, Gary Way, Bryan Vollmer and crew at Way Building Contractors in Charlevoix, measures about 960 square feet. In that small space there are two bedrooms and a sleeping bunkroom, two full baths, a kitchen, and dining and living space. Height became of utmost importance.

Courtesy photo A pergola extends over the front door of this cottage, which can be accessed by a flagstone path or just a couple steps up from the main home’s backyard. Part of the front porch is covered and lit downward from a knotty pine ceiling. The landscaping

was done by Landscape The master bed and bath are off the living Logic of Charlevoix, with space, separated by glass doors. The light yellow irrigation and landscape of the walls gives the room a warm feel, while lighting by Firman Irblue and green accents lend a cottage air. While rigation and Landscape not much larger than the bed, the room features Lighting LLC of Petoskey. a ceiling that extends on an angle to the full twostory height. The antique finishes of the end tables and headboard are matched by the frames of paintings on the walls, adding a tinge of French countryside. The master bath is simple, with a standing glass shower and a furniture-like vanity. The living room sofas look up to a loft ceiling. Light floats down from large windows on the second story and through a picture window on one wall; the scene is reflected in a large window- page 12

Creating an open feel Keeping this 960-squarefoot cottage open was a top priority for builder Ron Way of Way Building Contractors in Charlevoix. This was achieved through large and small touches throughout the cottage. One clear instance is the way the large windows of the living room let in the light, along with the cathedral ceiling of the master bedroom. “With the cathedral ceiling, it lends itself to being bigger than it actually is. If it had a drop-down ceiling, it would have seemed like a closet,” Way noted. But more subtle is the dining area’s ceiling. By leaving the second story floor joists exposed, it “made the ceiling seem 10 inches taller than it would be,” Way said. Beadboard was laid between the joists to finish the look. Upstairs, glass doors allow the loft area to be closed off if desired. But because they are glass, the small loft feels spacious. Windows views from the room also opened it up. “We tried to do that so none of the spaces can seem confined,” Way said.

style mirror on the opposite wall. Those gathered to chat on the sofas have a backdrop of a fireplace with a border done in tile. Squares with threedimensional flowers pop off the surface, beneath which are tiles inscribed with the words “Family,” “Enjoy,” “Peace,” “Dream,” “Grow,” “Breathe,” “Friends.” Ascending from the sides of the fireplace are shelves that hold ceramic and collected items, with plenty of room between each to make a statement. The sofas’ positions make the living room a separate space, even though there is no wall separating it from the dining area and galley-style kitchen, done by Karen LaCross at Lowe’s in Petoskey. Granite countertops and stainless steel appliances gleam; a standard refrigerator was forgone in favor of one freezer and three refrigeration drawers. Adjacent to the kitchen is the spiral staircase, which ascends tightly; its wrought-iron railing giving way to the second story loft area. Two twin beds fill much of the room, decked in white, blues and red. The loft’s edge features a white wooden rail, and sliding glass doors can be shut against downstairs conversations. Just off the loft is a full bath and a bunkroom not much wider than the stacked twin beds it houses. Pocketed shelves offer storage for bedtime books and trinkets, lit by a portal window at the head of the top bed. Hanging on the wall of the room are three paddles. The original paddle was a find at an estate sale, signed by campers — one of them the homeowner — at Kalkaska’s Camp Tanuga in 1973. Now, two other paddles hold the names and messages from guests to the cottage. The entire project was a collaboration of crew and client, Ron Way said. And this joint effort is what made the project a fun and successful one. “It was a good blend from both parties, and I think that really made the project turn out how it did,” he said. HL 12

O

ur interest in this home was piqued when we featured its purple bathroom — and we had to go back for more. Nestled amid the curved roads of Birchwood in Harbor Springs, the home is a study of texture and open space. But when Susan and Steve Madigan purchased the home about four years ago, it was a far cry from what it is today. The style was nearly the opposite of their tastes, with pastels popular for the cottage look everywhere. “I think anybody, when they go into a home, it has to fit their lifestyle ... We didn’t like the colors or taste, but the house itself — we saw how it would suit our family,” Susan said. So the remodeling began. For the design, the Madigans enlisted Renee Guthrie, owner and designer of Renee Guthrie Design/ Lake Street Design Studio in Petoskey, and the construction was done by JPR Builders of Petoskey. The work on the nearly 7,000-square-foot residence was started around spring break time and ready to move into by late July. Earthy tones of brown, green and burgundy dominate now — only the purple bathroom and a red guest bath deviate from the palette. Even the ceilings join in the theme. “The ceilings are part of the decoration of the whole room. I think when you paint the ceiling you get a lot of warmth,” Guthrie noted. The bedroom and bath of the master suite flow into each other, tied together by deep browns and metallic finishes. Before its transformation, the master bath was done in pink and white, with windows facing the neighboring house. Now, along that wall is a massive mirror. Jim Russell of JPR Builders said they built the curved soffit from which hangs the chandelier, and constructed two half-walls to support the pillars flanking the 9-footlong vanity. Feet on the bottom make  14

the unit look like a piece of furniture. Opposite is a custom-built dressing table, which offers in-wall storage and a makeup mirror. The shower extends nearly the width of the room, with a built-in seat and two shower heads. The arches had to be cut into the shower, and Russell said he had to calculate the curves to custom-cut tile for the edges of the recessed shelving. The ornate wallpaper is textured, and its metallic sheen makes the entire room shimmer. Across from the entrance to the master suite is the door leading to the equestrian room, so-called because it serves as an homage to the horses that have been a part of Susan and her daughter’s life. First saddles hang on a stand that was a present from daughter to mother, and memories hang on the walls from shows. There is also an old-time English country feel to the room, thanks in part to splashes of red and images of red-coated and white-pantsed riders on fox hunts. The kitchen is down a stretch of walnut floor, past the foyer and living space offering views of the golf course. The room’s high ceilings lend a sense of drama, as do the rich colors. The island is a spread of brown granite, in the same location as the original but redone to eliminate a stepdown portion. Where the table was now sit two chairs that look through glass doors facing the golf course. Upstairs are the two children’s bedrooms and baths, along with Steve’s office. Modeled off the office of their former home, there is a strong nautical theme. The walls are faux-painted to look like leather, but the ceiling is a standout feature. The main surface is stained beaded fir, and running perpendicular to the ribs are stained pine trim boards with exposed brass nailheads and washers. Opposite the desk, a large marlin jumps across the wall, its blue fin brightening the space. A bar offers relaxation after a long day’s work. Susan said the renovations have turned the space into a place that feels like home. “It’s our year-round home. A lot of people vacation here and like the cottage look, but for us, it’s home home,” she noted. HL 16

The cabinetry and the hood in the kitchen each received a remodel. The brown accent lines on the cabinets used to be blue, and were hand painted brown to tie into the home’s motif. The hood featured a carving of fruit and grape leaves, which was sanded down until smooth. Curved trim was added to the bottom to support the shimmering glass tiles now on its face.

This bar is found on the lower level in the game room, offering those waiting their turn at pool a barstool and a view of the game or out the windows. The dark green walls contrast with the burgundy-felted table. The level also features an den-like room, whose L-shaped sofa is the perfect for curling up to watch a movie. Antique motors, a ship’s wheel and engine order telegraph stand throughout the space.

HOMelife 17

The wine room This small space is also a special one, and underwent extensive renovations of its own. Its previous life was that of a bridge storage closet, with shelves lining the space. While a nice feature, builder Jim of JPR Builders in Petoskey said it just didn’t match the taste of the homeowners. The shelving came out, and through collaboration of homeowner and designer Renee Guthrie of Renee Guthrie Design/Lake Street Design Studio in Petoskey, the room began to change. It is still a small area, but the door of the closet came off and opened it up to the dining room. Originally, the thought was to cover the walls with beadboard. But instead, to achieve a Tuscan look, thin brick was laid and beadboard became an accent. The dropdown Michelangelo marble countertop rests atop wine fridges, giving the room an air of elegance.

Walloon Hills home perfect for every day and guests of all ages  By Maggie Peterson • Photography by G. Randall Goss

T The wood used for the handrail of the staircase from main to second floor has a sentimental value for the homeowners. The wood came from the old arts and crafts building at Camp Michigania, which was a summertime pastime for the couple and their kids when growing up. It is also why they spend holidays on Walloon Lake. Dave Skornia of Dave Skornia Builders often reuses materials from previous structures, and had the salvaged wood from the building.

his residence in the Hills of Walloon is welcoming from the first view of yellow chairs on the front porch. The home has an easy style and color profile, embracing the soft hues of a cottage. The homeowners had a smaller cottage on the property for about eight years, drawn to the area from their time at Camp Michigania as children. It was a retreat for them and their two daughters and sons-in-law, but when grandkids were added, the space just wasn’t fitting their needs. They brought in builder Dave Skornia of Dave Skornia Builders in Boyne City to redo the home, which involved bringing the structure down to the foundation. The new space was designed by Nancy Blandford, owner and interior designer of Built in Design of Boyne City, which specializes in kitchens and baths. The kitchen features an expanse of granite that is counterspace, serving center, dining area and cooking prep station all in one. In the shape of a large and squat U, there are eight accessible sides. One of the U’s legs is dedicated to a wet bar, complete with a wine fridge and cabinet for glass storage. The other end houses a microwave. The layout also means that everyone can be together in the kitchen area without stepping on each other’s toes. “The way that the house was designed, those two columns had to stay there. They’re structural,” Blandford said. “So when I ended up coming up with some different designs for the homeowners, I had some that had one island, some that had two islands. I came up with the U-shaped island and it seemed to make sense. I’d never done one of those before. It seemed

to fit their lifestyle very well, being able to utilize all those spaces. And it marked the living room from the kitchen.” The living room occupies much of the main floor, with a two-story ceiling and a stone fireplace that runs floor-to-ceiling along one wall. Windows line the upper section, allowing large amounts of light to filter down. Hanging above the living room table is a large and dramatic chandelier. The master suite lies adjacent to the living room, painted in refreshing and cool Benjamin Moore Spanish Olive. The color paired with the wood furnishings gives the space a rustic chic look and feel. The adjoining bathroom features coffee-stained oak wooden cabinetry topped with Verde Portofino granite. The color scheme continues in the tile of the shower and floor, a mix of green, gray and brown. Upstairs features rooms for the couple’s children and grandchildren to fill when they visit. The yellow bedroom in Benjamin Moore Candlelit Dinner is accented with blue for the University of Michigan grad, while the blue bedroom in Benjamin Moore Gentle Gray features green finishes. A Jack and Jill bathroom joins these bedrooms. A chalkboard down its hall labels whose towel belongs where, and the sinks are different heights — one adult- and the other child-sized. Across a sitting area that overlooks the living and dining room downstairs is a green bedroom in Benjamin Moore Healing Aloe, with a matching bath. Blandford said the home flows well, especially for the homeowners’ lifestyle. “I like the layout, the flow of the house. It just all makes really good sense where everything is placed on the house, especially compared to where it was prior,” she said. HL

ridges lend a dramatic touch to landscapes, arching over streams, ponds and ravines. Andre Poineau Woodworker in East Jordan crafted the bridges on these elegant estates. Owner Andy Poineau said the overpasses are fun opportunities to create a different style project. “Bridges add magic,” he noted. “They add a component that you don’t normally see on estates. There’s something whimsical about them.” These five bridges are found on three Northern Michigan properties.

TOP: The only vehicle access to the estate’s guesthouse is via golf cart across this bridge. Spanning about 40 feet, the structure is made of Western red cedar, sumac and black locust, the last of which was imported and used for the guardrail. Historically, black locust was brought in for fence posts before settlers knew white cedar was nearly as rot resistant; now, it is considered invasive. RIGHT: This footbridge traverses a stream and offers access to the estate’s guesthouse. Done completely in cedar and sumac, the crossing has views of a waterfall. The wood was taken from the 50-acre property, which features about half wetlands and half uplands with mature white pines. Built into the structure is a chase for water to the guesthouse. The natural finish was designed to fit in with the setting and the log home. 28

This bridge provides the only access from the road to the residence, and it had to meet two requirements — support a cement truck for construction and a fire truck for emergencies. The entire bridge, apart from steel I-beam supports and concrete footings, is done in Western red and white cedars, and features a cedar shake shingle roof. Vertical beams in white cedar maintain their root flairs, and gnarled, twisted branches were stained for guardrails. The bridge was done in two 25-foot sections, and put up before the acre-sized pond was filled four feet beneath it. It was constructed in 1983.

The owners of this Lake Charlevoix property wanted to emulate the bridge made famous in Monet’s paintings of a water lily pond. To create this piece, laminate wooden arches were formed in the shop from pressure-treated lumber. The structure is single span, stretching about 45 feet across a more than half-acre pond. The rest of the structure, including the planks of the footbridge, are done in white cedar. The paint was chosen to match the bridge of Monet’s inspiration, creating a dramatic effect. Courtesy photo

This footbridge was a birthday present from husband to wife. Done in an art nouveau style, the swooping beam on the exterior of the guardrails is actually structural support. The Western red cedar bridge stretches 35 feet across a small stream on a steep drop of 15 feet, which made for a challenging build. The pieces are held together with wooden pegs, and the curved beam was glued and laminated. HOMelife 29

here’s nothing quite like a party under the Northern Michigan sky. And for those looking to raise the bar — or add a bar — to an outdoor entertaining space, there is a variety of features to satisfy all sorts of needs and wants. Gary Lewinski, owner of Emmet Brick and Block in Petoskey, and Dale Drier of Drost Landscape in Petoskey shared some of their favorite and most popular features on the market.

‘cooking can be as simple as a freestanding grill to cook hot dogs and hamburgers, and it can be as elaborate as a full kitchen.’ Gary Lewinski, Emmet Brick and Block

CuLINARy CoRNER “Cooking can be as simple as a freestanding grill to cook hot dogs and hamburgers, and it can be as elaborate as a full kitchen,” Lewinski noted. For those with a simple addition in mind, add a side burner or choose a grill with one. Sauces for freshly grilled steaks or vegetables can be made outdoors, putting all the cooking in one place. Including an outdoorrated refrigerator and prep sink to the space means not having to shuttle ingredients from the indoors. Many of these accessories can be fit in ready-built islands, one step up from a freestanding grill but not quite a kitchen, Lewinski said. Simple models feature drawers and counter space, while more deluxe sets have spots for a grill, refrigerator, side burner and storage drawers. A bar area with shelving, condiment tray, wine fridge and even a kegerator can do for cocktail parties what cooking islands do for dinner parties. On the higher end of the addition scale, a built-in kitchen is part of the architecture of the space. Instead of adding the above features piecemeal, an outdoor kitchen combines all into one cohesive space. Pizza ovens have become popular in recent years, Lewinski said, noting that many like the idea of all members of the family helping to make a dinner. While there are options for built-in systems, countertop options are available. A RING of fIRE A firepit is one of the simplest methods to amp up a patio, Lewinski said. And, there are styles for all tastes and budgets.  HOMelife 33

How-to

Continued from page 33

The most basic is a woodburning version, with bricks or other masonry making the ring. Patios are ideal for firepits because they offer the support needed to hold the materials making the ring. Gas firepits are one step up in price and complexity, as gas lines must be run. However, one payoff is the ease with which they can be started and extinguished, and no wood needs to be hauled, Lewinski noted. Drier added, “Most of these units can be used for multiple functions. When not in use, these units can provide a great place to sit, relax and enjoy their surroundings.” A fireplace is an alternative option and has been growing in popularity. Some are built into outdoor kitchens, while others are freestanding. There are even kits that come with all you’d need to build one, Lewinski said. Heat it up When the sun goes down and the temperature drops, extend the hours outdoors with heaters. Portable patio heaters are freestanding and can be moved throughout a space. Lewinski said infrared heat is another option. Long, rectangular tubes can be mounted, for example into a gazebo, and heat radiates down. Enhance the greenscape Drier suggested investing in the landscape of the outdoor space, be it through adding a garden and plants, or modifying existing beds. “Herbs, vegetables and select perennials have become a main stay. ‘Unique,’ ‘native’ and ‘non-invasive’ are the new catch phrases at the garden centers ... Many of our clients often request to modify some of their existing plant beds. Their reasons could include plant sizes, dislike of a certain area of their landscaping and genuine preference of change,” he noted. Lewinski added that water features are popular for their soothing effect and ambiance. HL
