his issue of HomeLife is filled with the warmth of the holidays. We had the pleasure of being invited into the beautiful homes of two area families to capture a glimpse at their distinctive holiday decorating styles. Sheri McWhirter, former HomeLife editor, and G. Randall Goss, HomeLife photographer, visited a home on Walloon Lake and another near Boyne Mountain Resort, both decorated inside and out with the festive spirit of the holidays. These homes promise to inspire and delight.

Snow day With the colors of autumn a recent memory and the pristine whites of winter just around the corner, our outdoor recreational activities begin to change. While some may use the Robin Petruska shorter days to spend more time indoors, others look at the winter months as a time to revel in the great outdoors ... as the bicycles and camping gear get put away, the ski gear comes out of the closet. We visited three area ski shops — Shaggy’s in Boyne City, The Outfitter in Harbor Springs, The Bahnhof in Petoskey — in search of the latest and greatest equipment to make your day on the slopes even more fun than you remember. Whether you’re searching for a custom-made ski, new ski boots, higher performance from your skis, or perhaps a pair of telemark skis, local ski shops have something for every alpine enthusiast.

Break out the bubbly Champagne adds a little sparkle to your holiday

C

hampagne is not just for ringing in the New Year anymore. Bring a little sparkle to all your holiday gatherings by serving some bubbly. Local wine and spirit suppliers suggest affordable options that make it easier to enjoy Champagne on special occasions and throughout the year. 8

At Esperance, a specialty food and wine shop in Charlevoix, the drink of choice is always Champagne, according to owner Pram Acharya. “We love Champagne. It is not only celebratory — but if you’re feeling down, nothing can lift you up like Champagne.” Esperance carries 55 types of

Champagne and sparkling wines. The store claims to carry one of the broadest selections of bubbly in Northern Michigan. Acharya said Michigan sparkling wines are the latest trend and are also more affordable than Champagne. The grapes “really do their best at their northern limit,” he said. He notes a fine sparkling

wine by L. Mawby of the Leelanau Peninsula. True Champagnes from the Champagne region of France go through further fermentation than sparkling wines, and require more labor and time which in turn creates the more costly bubbly varieties, he went on to explain. Acharya, like most wine experts, recommends choosing quality and artistry but advises speaking with friends, family and merchants to find just the right toast-worthy wine. Headed north to Symons General Store of Petoskey, wine cellar manager Brian Franks agrees Michigan sparkling wines are a less expensive route for the holidays. Symons houses these sparkling wines but also carries a great deal of French Champagnes as well, ranging anywhere from $9 all the way to $350 a bottle. Veuve Clicquot, is a non-vintage Champagne marked at $49.95 a bottle that is one of the store’s best sellers. But Franks notes another trend, which surfaced this summer, that he feels is sure to come back for the holidays. “Prosecco wines have been extremely popular. They are their own type of grape, grown in a region in Italy,” he explained. Prosecco is “not as spendy,” he said and is good quality for the price. This makes it a great choice when assessing quantity for a holiday party.

Trending Michigan sparkling wines Prosecco — Italian sparkling Cava — Spanish sparkling

Franks’ personal recommendation for a holiday dinner is any sparkling rosé — which he believes fits perfectly with a big turkey dinner. He also noted that the best choice is truly “whatever suits your taste.” Gurney’s Bottle Shop in Harbor Springs is also host to a large variety of spirits perfect for the holidays. Peter Gurney, also promoted sparkling wines as the most economical option for holiday get-togethers. “If you are going to have 15-20 people for dinner, you don’t want to be spending $50 per bottle,” he said. Besides giving a nod to Michigan varieties, Gurney stocks a few California sparkling wines around $30 a bottle that “have really come around.” Back for the holidays, the store will stock cava, which is a Spanish sparkling wine. He noted that it has been a hit for serving at weddings the past few years and recommends it as an inexpensive option for a special occasion toast. Salud! HL

For the holidays

centerpieces By Danielle McIntosh • Photography by G. Randall Goss

K

eep décor modern, yet traditional, this holiday season by incorporating natural elements. Angela Christie, lead designer at Flowers From Nature’s Garden in Petoskey, suggests that floral centerpieces don’t necessarily need flowers. “This year it’s all about keeping décor really natural,” she noted. Last year Christie taught a workshop on Christmas centerpieces. She also holds a Michigan floral certification and has been the designer for the floral shop for 12 years. As the holidays approach, Christie recognizes the need for table centerpieces made to impress. Christie said this year the trend is toward traditional and “woodsy” elements. Think twigs, cones and fake leaves, she added. Using different mediums, including greenery, pumpkins, pods and berries, not only allows centerpieces to last much longer but keeps it natural and pretty, she said. When ready to take on Christmas decorating, don’t over do the cutesy décor, but instead keep it simple. Consider pillar candles and vases, suggests Christie. A color scheme is very important in creating a desired effect. Silver, white and turquoise with added sparkle has risen in popularity but Christie said she tends to 10

gravitate toward primary colors for the holidays. “Red is always beautiful and keeps it traditional but can also fit in a modern piece,” she said. To add the natural element to Christmas and New Year’s décor, Christie recommends adding birch, curly willow, or painted sticks with glitter. For an easy do-it-yourself centerpiece Christie suggests cylinder vases filled with ornaments. To add more glam think artificial snow, lights and ribbons. Another easy trick for quick party decorating is to vary vase sizes and fill with candles of a color scheme. Christie emphasizes keeping holiday décor both modern and fun, “but not too far out of the box.” To see more holiday centerpiece ideas, visit Flowers from Nature’s Garden on Facebook or visit the store’s website at www.naturesgardenflowers.com. The page also posts coupons, discounts and contests. Call the store at (231) 347-1092 or stop in for a consultation just west of the bridge in Petoskey. HL

SKIING

Gear up for skiing By Glen Young • Photography by G. Randall Goss

What’s new in skiwear this season

W

Ski boots from Bahnhof Ski Shop, Petoskey

ith ski season about to heat up, those eager to put down the first tracks of the season need to consider new gear. Several area shops are stocked and ready to assist. At Shaggy’s in Boyne City, alpine enthusiasts can find custom-made, locally sourced skis. “We can customize just about every aspect of a ski,” says ski designer Jeff Johnson. Previously, Shaggy’s offered customizing of its stock models, but this year is offering a full custom experience. “We can change the core, the stiffness and we can come up with a whole new shape if we need to,” Johnson says. “We cater more to the individual rather than to everybody.” Not ready for custom? Shaggy’s popular Ahmeek model features updates.  HOMelife 13

Ski gear Continued from page 13

“It’s stiffer, has more camber, and a 50 percent thicker sidewall,” Johnson says. The result? “It’s like putting down railroad tracks on hard snow,” he says. Johnson’s father and partner, John, says the goal is to make skiing more fun and more accessible for customers. “If they stay longer, they’re going to have more fun, it’s going to build our sport, and benefit everybody.” This year the company has also teamed up with Mount Bohemia in the western Upper Peninsula. Customers who buy the Colab ski receive a season pass to the ski area. At the Petoskey’s Bahnhof Ski Shop, co-owner Ryan Smith says, “Start with the boots” because “boots have the biggest impact on your skiing,” and he and his staff have several models to fit even the most challenging foot. Smith recommends Salomon’s X Max and X Pro series, with custom-moldable outer shells. For skis, Smith says tip rocker improvements allow for more tip float, making turning easier, while full rocker patterns provide a higher performance. Models including Volkl’s X-Werks and Blizzard’s Bonafide or Braham can satisfy any demands. Looking for a new downhill challenge? The Outfitter in Harbor Springs offers several options in telemark equipment. Telemark combines the free heel mobility of traditional cross country skiing with the high speed possibility of alpine terrain. Outfitter ski technician Marc Green says a great choice for those interested in trying telemark is Voile’s Vector series. A Utah made ski, the Vector offers an early rise tip, to “plow through crud, powder and variable conditions more easily.” Green particularly suggests the Voile Vector BC, with a “kick” area 14

underfoot which allows skiers to ascend a hill on the skis before making turns on the way back down. Combined with a 22 Designs cable style binding, the outfit is all American made. “The industry is growing in that direction, where people have to earn their turns,” Green says. Josh Baker, Outfitter owner, says developments in telemark skis have been “an absolute game changer.” Improvements in ski design have made the technique more accessible. “The skis are wider, have more sidecut, with an early rise rocker pattern so the skis never lose a tip under trees,” he says. Whatever your downhill needs, Shaggy’s, The Bahnhof and The Outfitter are stocked and ready to help you make those first turns more enjoyable. HL

Christmas collection

Boyne Mountain area home perfect for decoration display

here’s a home found on the wester n side of the sprawling grounds at Boyne Mount a i n Re s o r t w h e r e a s t e p through the front door is like walking into Christmas Village. G a rl a n d a n d a n g e l s s u r r o u n d the space, with bows tied here and there and Santas everywhere. There’s something festive at every turn. The whole house is aglow for the holiday season, inside and out. Gery and Shirlene Frech own the lovely home that makes Christmas into a way of life in the weeks leading up to the holiday. The collection of decorations is wide and diverse, a sight to behold.

“ I ’ve c o l l e c t e d ove r t h e ye a r s, ” Shirlene said. Gery clarified, and not for the last time. “This has been going on for 40 years,” he said. And their home with its wintertime view of the Boyne Valley is the perfect backdrop against which to paint the ever-changing holiday landscape. Each year the way the decorations are done is different. The nativity scene moves around. Christmas china is on display and poinsettias are scattered around. Candles are the focus of centerpieces and there’s a big bowl of antique porcelain decorations from Russia. “A lot of times I hear ‘wow’ or ‘you put up a lot of decorations.’ I think most

people enjoy it,” Shirlene said. “I just enjoy doing it. I could probably do it in a week.” “No, weeks,” Gery chimed in. Of course, the 9-foot-tall tree is the centerpiece of the house-wide holiday exhibit. It’s never the same year to year, either, Shirlene said. “This year it was gold and white,” she said, while looking up at the golden holiday balls and glistening white snowflakes hung on the large Christmas tree. “Sometimes I’ll start decorating and I don’t even know yet what I’m going to do with our tree.” Same goes for the tree topper. “Sometimes, I put big bows up there and other times I use flowers. This year is an angel and she’s not even a tree 

topper. She is a fiber optic and I had to remove the bottom to get her up there.” Perhaps what’s most amazing about Shirlene’s collection is that she can shift the entire display from year to year, yet without often adding to her stock of holiday knickknacks. Most of it came to her as bargain offers or inherited treasures. “I never buy anything full price, but I haven’t bought any decorations in two years,” Shirlene said. The family’s most precious and long-held ornaments are found on a special Christmas tree in an adjoining room. It’s covered with an assortment of Santa faces and gift boxes, teddy bears and handpainted, miniature porcelain plates. “This has all the ornaments made by our children and those given to us. I call it our old-fashioned tree,” Shirlene said. “I think it started when my children were young and now we have two grandchildren.” The Freches’ son is Eric, 40, who now gets to pass along the family’s holiday traditions to his children. Shirlene and Gery’s other child was Laura, who passed away at 14 years old and now each year, they place Laura’s little wintertime skirt and coat under the Christmas tree to keep her memory alive at the holidays. And it’s not the only memory that endures in the Frech holiday household. A darling collection of Russian nesting dolls remains part of the annual ritual, Shirlene said, because she “had a little neighbor boy who was crazy about them.” “So I got one for him and one for myself,” she said, explaining the tradition. Another showy spot in the main living room is the display that runs up the staircase; more garland and bows and delicate Russian ornaments. “Sometimes I think the stairway takes as much time as the tree,” Shirlene said, laughing. The Santa collection includes a little bit of everything — 16 on display this year — with

a particularly special piece, the jolly man in his red suit, kneeling before a tiny, handpainted baby Jesus. She looked at another jolly fat man and said, “This one I had to buy because he’s a skier.” There are even little hobo Santas. “Goodness, I don’t even know where I got those,” Shirlene said. Year after year, the setting is wonderful enough to play host to Shirlene’s friends in the monthly meeting “Birthday Girls Group” — complete with its 16 members. “There’s not one of us who has a birthday in December, so it’s the one time we invite our husbands and they all come here to celebrate,” Shirlene said. “I hope that when people come they enjoy it.” They surely do. Santa’s here!

Classic Claus collection adorns Walloon Lake home

long the shores of Northern Michigan’s Walloon Lake is a home which at the holidays reflects many of the faces of Old Saint Nick. It’s a classic display of Santa Claus at every turn. In one arrangement he carries a teddy bear and holiday wreath. Another uses a walking stick and carries a bag of toys over his shoulder. Other Santas ride on the back of a dog sled, carry a harp, or are dressed in plaid tartans. It’s a Claus collection worth admiration. “The Santa tradition started the first year that my husband and I were married as I love Christmas and in particular Santa as

he is such a symbol of joy. My husband “We are a very patriotic family and unstarted a tradition of gifting me a Lynn derstand that the freedoms we enjoy are Haney Santa every year and now we have possible due to brave men and women over 20, all beautiful pieces of art made fighting for us all over the world. natural foliage is delicately draped on the light fixture above the table and even provides the base for a red rose centerpiece. It’s a little bit wild and entirely cozy at the same time, with an array of Santas from around the world placed throughout the room. “Using natural greenery — cedar, spruce from our woods, or from Bill’s Farm Market, magnolia from our trees in Ohio, pine cones,

which we harvest from our trips to South Carolina and hydrangeas which I harvest from our bushes at Walloon and dry in the fall — brings the smell of Christmas and the beauty of nature into our cottage,” the homeowner said. In the nearby living room, more natural greenery adorns the fireplace complete with more Santas — one in pajamas, another in a shiny red suit and a third in a golden robe. Bright, white poinsettias also are found there, along with stockings with individually designed Christmas scenes. But perhaps the showiest exhibit of all is the bright, family-inspired Christmas tree situated near the windows and an exterior door. It’s tucked along the edge of the room, but takes center stage. “The tree represents our 32-year marriage and our travels all over the world with our children. Each year it is so much fun remembering all of our trips and how blessed we are as a family,” she said. And Christmas isn’t confined to the dining and living rooms. It happily spills over into the kitchen and bedrooms. There are more Santas to see, a snowman cookie jar and even jolly, smiling reindeer in a daughter’s room. The home is owned by a Cincinnati family whose members have for years enjoyed leisure time at their Walloon Lake home. HL

Taking a few simple steps now can save you the headaches and the cost of an emergency breakdown later. The service professionals at Dave Kring Chevrolet-Cadillac recommend these proactive steps to make sure your car is ready for winter driving. BATTERY Keep the battery connections clean, tight and corrosion-free. Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it is advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old. HEATER, DEFROSTERS AND WIPER BLADES Check that the heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems are working properly as heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons, such as defrosting. Make sure your windshield washer fluid is always filled to capacity. Letting it become empty when you are on the road can be disastrous. Check your wiper blades, those that are torn, cracked, or don’t properly clean your windshield should be replaced immediately. As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six to eight months. At Dave Kring Chevrolet-Cadillac, we will install your new wiper blades with your purchase. With our no-appointment oil change, we provide a 27 point check of all hoses, belts, headlights, tail lights, especially brake lights, and top off your windshield fluid with anti-freeze washer fluid to ensure your lines will not freeze. TIRES Check the tires for tire tread depth. You can have a dealership do this, or if you chose to check your own; look for uneven wear, as this indicates

the need for a wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. With the snow and ice in Northern Michigan, you might consider special winter tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, be sure to check your tire pressure weekly or at least every 3,000 miles, to keep your vehicle driving smoothly and evenly. Proper tire pressure will use gas more efficiently. As the temperature drops, your tires will lose pressure. Note: Your tires should be inflated when cool to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations; check your vehicle’s placard located either on the frame or the driver’s door or check your vehicle’s owner’s manual. DO NOT use the maximum limit that is stamped on the tire sidewall. Improper air pressure in tires can lead to a multitude of problems — from uneven and accelerated tire wear, to structural damage, tire failure and even poor gas mileage. Having your tires properly inflated can improve gas mileage and save you money on those holiday trips. Have your tires rotated every 6,0008,000 miles to help equalize tread life. A good rule of thumb is to have wheel alignment checked as specified in your vehicle’s owner’s manual or if you feel the wheel “pull” from one direction or another. If snow-covered roads are a concern, you should consider replacing your tires when they reach approximately 6/32” of remaining tread depth to maintain good mobility. You need more tread depth in snow because your tires need to compress the snow in their grooves and

release it as they roll. If there isn’t sufficient tread depth, the “bites” of snow your tires can take on each revolution will be reduced to “nibbles,” and your vehicle’s traction and mobility will be sacrificed. Because tread depth is such an important element for snow traction, winter tires usually start with noticeably deeper tread depths than typical all-season or summer tires. Some winter tires even have a second series of “wear bars” molded in their tread pattern indicating approximately 6/32” remaining tread depth to warn you when your tires no longer meet the desired tread depth. If you want to check your tires for this tread depth, place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If the top of the Lincoln Memorial (backside of penny) is always covered by the tread, you have more than 6/32” of tread depth remaining. BRAKES Have the brake system checked, including brake linings, rotors and drums before winter. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important when driving on icy or snowcovered roads. Don’t risk your life on worn out brakes. Brake Dust Damage: Have you ever noticed the black or brown speckles on your vehicle finish? If your car is light colored you might notice it more. It’s brake dust and it can harm your car’s finish. You will want to keep your vehicle washed at least once a week, if not every two weeks, to help prevent brake dust damage. If you don’t keep up on this, the brake dust may eat into the vehicle’s finish and will have to be removed with a special cleaner. It may also need to be buffed out and resealed/waxed. Getting your vehicle ready for winter driving is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety, reliability and fewer unexpected repairs when severe winter weather strikes.

to the World

here is something in the air at Christmas. A crispness. An awareness. Selflessness. Gratitude. As cold air stings your nose, this something touches the heart. The moments of the year – and what a year it’s been – blend together into one amazing gift – friendship and fellowship, good days and difficulties, huge successes and teaching moments. Christmas smooths the wrinkles out of the year, dresses it up with sparkles and ribbon, and for the first time you can see it for what it is: a Gift. We want to take this time to express our love and gratitude to you, our clients, our neighbors and our friends. It is these relationships – not the economy or the weather or our schedules – that make every year a blessing. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.
