W

hen my parents’ home was remodeled, each of us kids got to choose the color for our room. I went with a yellow that prompted the response, “Where are my sunglasses?” My penchant for color hasn’t waned since, which is part of the reason I was so excited for this “Crazy about color” edition of HomeLife. The other part of the reason was because our approach to this issue was completely different from what we’ve done before. Usually, photographer Randy Goss and I work to capture a home in its entirety. But this time, we looked to bring in our focus. What you’re going to see is a showcase of six different rooms, in six dif-

ferent homes, by six different designers, in the six colors of the rainbow. (To answer a popular question, purple and orange were the hardest to track down.) While each room showcases its color brilliantly, the colors themselves are not all vibrant. The yellow kitchen and blue bedroom, for example, feature more

demure shades. The orange bathroom tends toward terra-cotta, while the green has a distinctly sage tint to it. All that being said, I’m not sure you could find a truer red or more dynamic purple. In addition, we wanted to explore color for its seasonality — spring officially arrived not too long ago, and with it the craving for fresh air and fresh looks. A heartfelt thanks goes out to the homeowners and designers who granted us access to these residences, so we could attempt to give nature’s hues their due.

For people who love the coast. Reid Furniture introduces the Coastal Collection... In Northern Michigan, maybe we love the coast so much because it isn’t just a location. It’s a way of life. With that in mind, Coastal Living magazine and Stanley Furniture have created a home collection inspired by our favorite beach cottages. It’s Coastal, it’s fresh and it comes in three palettes of coastal colors. You can opt for a pretty pastel, such as Sea Grass, or punch it up a notch with Beach Cruiser Red. Either way, you’ll love having options. Stop in today, and see this exciting collection for yourself.

RED

Red, red room

Bay Harbor room is contrasted and balanced throughout By Maggie Peterson • Photography by G. Randall Goss

W

hile this room certainly starts with red, it’s not where it ends. Instead, the combination of color, patterns and textures create a cohesive and one-of-akind space. Designed by Nadine Hogan with Pumco Interiors in Petoskey, this bedroom is found in a residence on The Peninsula at Bay Harbor. Red was chosen based on the bedding, which was in a previous home. To complement the color, Hogan chose Benjamin Moore Burnt Peanut Red for the walls. She also introduced floral and striped fabrics for the custommade pillow shams, patterns that are picked up in the window treatments and ottoman in the room’s turret. “I love the turret with the red leather chairs and toile valances. I think it’s got a lot of interest, and you feel like you’re outside,” Hogan said. This spherical space is a special aspect of the room, a place set apart that’s ideal for reading

a book in the WhittemoreSherrill leather lounge chairs or just soaking in the view of Little Traverse Bay when the weather isn’t quite warm enough for being outdoors (the room also has a stone deck for when the climate’s more friendly). Tall windows line most of the curved space, giving the illusion of being surrounded by nature. The sense of air and openness is enhanced by a domed ceiling with a chandelier. Recessed lighting runs around the dome for dramatic nighttime atmosphere. The white touches are paired with dark browns and black to provide contrast and balance in the bedroom. The white molding in the turret matches in style the cherry molding that outlines the red walls, adding a warm and decadent touch. Above the bed hangs a framed black and white image of flying fowl. There is a certain antique feel to the design elements in the bedroom. While some are true antiques brought in by the family, others achieve the effect through their finishes. HL

Clockwise from top left: – Red-and-white striped Ralph Lauren wallpaper adds texture to the turret, while exposed nailheads in the leather chairs offer exquisite detail. – There are tarnished brass touches throughout the room, seen in the nailheads of leather chairs in the turret and the chest in the bedroom, and also in a historic-looking globe that stands by the dresser. – The private bathroom features white tile, a granite countertop and redand-white striped Ralph Lauren wallpaper.

Naturally orange

Shades of terra-cotta lend to the earthy feel of this bath By Maggie Peterson • Photography by G. Randall Goss

T

his is one orange bathroom, although admittedly more terracotta than the fruit of the same name. It all started with the wallpaper for homeowner Cindi Malin, who is owner and designer with CindiFranco’s Cool Stuff in Boyne City. She was looking through a new wallpaper book when this pattern caught her eye because of its touches of copper

that appear and disappear as the angle shifts. Malin also knew she wanted the bathroom to look natural, which in large part is achieved by the vanity’s counter. When Malin and her husband, Frank, were married, a friend gave them a heart-shaped rock as a wedding present. Set into grout, it is surrounded by stones and pebbles of various sizes, colors and textures.

The stones are encased in a clear acrylic, which the Malins poured into a wooden frame. A few of the rocks poke through the otherwise smooth surface. “I wanted it to have texture. I wanted it to look like you could pick up a rock,” Malin said. Once dry, the wooden frame was removed and a simple piece of copper was formed to hug the edges.  HOMelife 11

The counter is reflected in a mirror that meets it at wall’s edge. Instead of a standard rectangle, curved edges snake and wiggle their way to the ceiling. The edges are mimicked in the hourglass curves of a pendant light suspended from the ceiling. The vanity was iron painted and then rusted with a catalyst to achieve the desired finish and colors. Streaks of green run through it, and the coloring provides a somewhat neutral background to showcase the cabinet door and drawer faces that were stained to match the wallpaper. More natural surfaces come into play with the leather-wrapped drawer handles. This attention to detail extends to other areas of the room as well, including stained picture molding around the ceiling and a custom-made switch plate. The orange hues of the room are accented with green. The tiled shower and bathtub has a feature strip through its middle; green glass mosaic tiles done in a copper overglaze add texture and shimmer. Malin noted that there was a lot of thought in bringing the space together, but once the plans were laid the elements fell into place. “I knew what I wanted to incorporate into the look and finding the key components was easier than I expected. They were always there — it was just putting the pieces into place,” she said. HL

Kitchen, dining room radiates with tones of cream, yellow and gold By Maggie Peterson • Photography by G. Randall Goss

Y

ellow. It’s subtle enough that on first glance, there’s only a sense that this kitchen and dining area are light and airy. But with a closer look, hues of gold, lemon and cream appear. When the homeowners purchased this home on The Peninsula at Bay Harbor, they sought to make the residence reflect their inclinations. While the kitchen has stayed much the same, the adjoining dining area and much of the rest of the home was redesigned by Carrie Blanck, owner and designer with Tres Belle Interior Design in Harbor Springs, starting in September 2008. The kitchen cabinetry and backsplash tile falls more in the range of creamy white, but the truer yellow shades of the adjoining dining space reflects some of its hue into the room. Adding shine are the room’s surfaces — polished brown marble on counter surfaces, stainless appliances and polished chrome fixtures. Blanck said the homeowner is partial to early American style. Elements reminiscent of that time, combined with a fresh cottage look, abound in the dining area. The color inspiration came from the gas fireplace in the dining area, which is bordered

in matte finish tile. Peppering the flat squares are ones with a floral and dot pattern, adding depth of texture. The hearth is flanked by wooden pillars and topped with a mantel whose edges mimic the crown molding and beams of the ceiling. Above the fireplace hangs a giclée by Harbor Springs artist Mary Hramiec-Hoffman. For enjoying the glow of the fire are two high-backed chairs from Hickory Chair Company, based in North Carolina. In order to pick up on the theme of the room, Blanck chose ma-

telassé fabric with a white and yellow checked pattern and embroidered twisting vines, flowers and other foliage. Exposed nailheads show off the shape of the chair. The wallpaper adds dimension with its tonal diamond pattern. Blanck said she prefers to pair painted chairs with wooden tables, as seen in the dining area. When the breadboard ends of the trestle table are lifted, there’s seating for eight. Five chairs — painted with a yellow tinge — are snugged in around three of the sides, while a bench provides seating for three more. “The trestle style is really nice because you can fit lots of chairs around it and you don’t have legs in the way,” Blanck noted. The chandelier, by Texas-based Lamplight Designs, is done in the 18th century tole style of painted, lacquered or enamelled metalware; this chandelier was custom-painted white with gold trim. Blanck noted she enjoys that both these rooms are open to the other, which allows for relaxation and interaction while meals are being prepared. “I like the cozy hearth room where you can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee while someone’s in the kitchen,” she said. T Birchbark-inspired kitchen uses sage tones to bring the outside in

he relationship between painted and wood surfaces is one in which each material wins. “What’s nice in a log home, when you introduce color, you see the architecture of the home better. You’re not trying to match the logs,” said Liz Firebaugh, certified kitchen designer and owner of Signature Kitchens in Petoskey. Firebaugh was the designer of this kitchen in a home on Walloon Lake, which was built in 2007 by Boyne City-based Paramount Custom Home Builders. The design started with the homeowner’s love of birchbark, which can be seen on cabinet faces. Steve Burrows of Rustic Breeze Creations in the Larks Lake-Pellston area was enlisted to do the work, first crafting and then inserting the bark-covered panels into the cabinet frame. But before that could be done, the cabinets had to be chosen. While normally used as an accent color, this green was a natural fit for a room and home with nature-inspired features. The custom alder cabinets were done by Dutch Made Custom Cabinetry in  HOMelife 19

Birchbark cabinetry

The birchbark panels in this kitchen’s cabinet doors were crafted by Steve Burrows of Rustic Breeze Creations in the Larks Lake-Pellston area. Burrows said he mounted the birchbark to the 1/8-inch panel, and then set the panel into the door’s frame. Very fine twigs of willow and dogwood were then overlaid onto the panel. The birchbark is tracked down by Burrows, culled from trees before they are cut down. He said the idea came to him from his timbering days, when friends in rustic retail would ask him to find specific pieces of wood for products. As he realized there was a market for this, he began to find items from the woods for himself. Normally, once tree is felled it will go through a chipper or have the exterior removed before being planked. If possible, Burrows steps in to peel off the bark before this stage. It’s ideal to do when the tree is standing so he can study it, watching for bends and shifts before peeling. The peeling can only happen in the summer. “A lot of stars have to line up,” Burrows noted. Once peeled, the birchbark is laid down and weighted with a press to prevent it from curling back. It’s then ready for projects, such as cabinets like the ones in this kitchen.

Indiana, in the color balsam. A walkin pantry, also in alder, occupies much of one wall and was designed to look like an armoire. Stainless steel surfaces were kept to the two ovens and the sinks; the refrigerator is covered in panels to blend with the rest of the balsam cabinetry. Custom ordering was also done for the island, which features a furniture-like appearance thanks to inset cabinets and turned legs. Topping its surface and the counters is a light gray honed granite. “I think it’s a more casual look,” Firebaugh said of the honed surface, “and log is softer. Nothing is shiny in a log home; it’s more natural.” Along the lake-facing wall are large windows. Instead of a standard wall under the cabinets on the same plane, smaller windows allow natural light in as well as the view. One of the standout features of this kitchen is the oven area, which starts with the oven and range itself, a sixburner gas appliance by Wolf. The backsplash is done in rock that’s been veneered. A recess behind the range features small mosaic tiles in complementary colors, outlined with copper liner tile, and allows easy access to oils, spices and vinegars. Extending from the wall is a hood that’s just about as unique as they come. The stack is textured and covered in a copper coating that echoes the copper liner tiles. At the base is a wide log, which nearly matches the copper in color and has a shape that echoes the lodgepole pine beams on the ceiling. Firebaugh added this kitchen is full of personality and fits in with the rest of the log home. “I think it tells a story of the house. You don’t walk into this and feel it’s not part of the home,” she said. HL

Much of the drama also comes from the design elements, such as the silver gourds bedside lamps and a “bevy of bevels” circle mirror, a frameless beveled round mirror accented by small rectangular beveled mirrors. There is the high headboard on the woven bed frame in ebony, which makes the bed a predominant feature of the room. To each side are end tables, mismatched to offset the lookalike white armchairs and ottomans opposite. Lent said space planning, scale and proportion are key elements to any of the company’s designs, and this room is no exception. Because of the high headboard, there was enough room to fit the tall lamps with black circular shades on each end table and still have

the shades lower than the headboard. The armchairs also feature tall backs, a look heightened by slender arms and a streamlined appearance. Between the resting spots is a chest in chocolate mousse. The bedroom is connected to the one next door via a shared bathroom. Lent noted the bathroom, which is done in Crema Marfil marble surfaces and linen ceramic tile with Exotic Mist mosaic pieces inset on the floor, was planned from the beginning. The luxe feel of that space was to be carried over into the bedrooms. One example is seen in the polished nickels fixtures of the bathroom and the polished nickel lamps of the bedroom. “We tried to have that feeling transcend into the adjoining bedroom. We tried for casual elegance, with a sophisticated cottage feel,” Lent said. HL

Power to the purple Plenty of light and shine play up drama By Maggie Peterson Photography by G. Randall Goss

W

hen the Madigans bought their home in Birchwood, the style inside did not match their preferences. So they enlisted Renee Guthrie, owner and designer of Renee Guthrie Design/Lake Street Design Studio in Petoskey, to redesign the spaces. Now, most of the walls are in shades of brown and earth tones, but one bathroom was designed around the two color wishes of their teenage daughter — purple and black. The idea was to create a bold, dramatic look within the space provided. “Typically, people would be afraid to put that dark color on the walls in a small room such as that ... As long as you have adequate light, then I don’t think you have to worry about it being too dark,” Guthrie said. And there is plenty of illumination in the space, both from above and on each side of the vanity. The glossy paint finish help to reflect back the light as well. Polished surfaces add their own shine, not only in the polished chrome fixtures but also in the metallic mirror frame. When paired with the white accents, the dark features of this room pop with dimension and depth. The floor is done in black St. Laurent and white Thassos marble tile. Its layout runs diagonally to the vanity and shower; the design is mimicked in the countertop, which utilizes the same large, shimmery black tiles. “I love the black and white marble checkerboard floor. It’s so classic and yet using it in that scenario with the dark purple walls it makes it very fresh and young,” Guthrie noted. HL

Above: The zebra image works twofold in this space; not only does it pick up on the black and white color combination, it ties the space into the bedroom, which features the animal print on the bedspread. Facing page: The vanity in this bathroom showcases the contrast and depth of the purple, black and white color combination. Glimpsed through the doorway is the bedroom, which features charcoal gray carpet and darker charcoal walls. Purple is used as an accent in the bedroom for throw pillows and window treatments.

Classic Menswear for the Summer

The vanity is striking because of its gleaming surfaces and surprising counter. Instead of common small tiles or marble, the black St. Laurent tiles are large and match those found on the floor. Gray grout highlights the seams, which crisscross diagonally to the wall. The shine of the polished marble is echoed in the metallic mirror frame and fixtures.
