T

here’s a whole lot of water up here, and thank goodness for that. I’ve spent a good deal of my three and a half years in Northern Michigan on the water. Most of the time it’s been for writing purposes — visiting lakeside homes, exploring shorelines, discovering how people take full advantage of what’s out there. Other times, I’ve set out with friends to navigate rivers by kayak or soak in the sunset on a beach. I’ve noticed similarities — clean, cool, refreshing, beautiful waters. But what’s been equally striking are the differences, not only from lake to lake and river to river, but within the same body of water. The Inland Waterway is a perfect example. This collection of water, a chain of lakes linked by rivers, has so many

personalities it’s hard to keep track. What ties them together is recreation, ease of travel and proximity to towns and the Great Lakes. In this issue, we explore homes that share shoreline with the Indian and Crooked rivers.

We also captured a condo overlooking the Harbor Springs marina that’s so detailed, it made my head swim with ideas. And a cottage just south of Cross Village is full of lake vistas and art. Our final article is one that’s been promised for months — following up on two downtown remodels that combine the charm of history with modern touches. As summer gives way to the coming seasons, it won’t be long before the waters are either frozen or inaccessible. It’s time to soak them up for all they’re worth. HL

For people who love the coast. Reid Furniture introduces the Coastal Collection... In Northern Michigan, maybe we love the coast so much because it isn’t just a location. It’s a way of life. With that in mind, Coastal Living magazine and Stanley Furniture have created a home collection inspired by our favorite beach cottages. It’s Coastal, it’s fresh and it comes in three palettes of coastal colors. You can opt for a pretty pastel, such as Sea Grass, or punch it up a notch with Beach Cruiser Red. Either way, you’ll love having options. Stop in today, and see this exciting collection for yourself.

The Inland Waterway has beckoned many to its waters, but a select number get to claim a section of shoreline for themselves. HomeLife wanted to learn what life is like along the rivers of the waterway, and what we found were three homes that take advantage of their spots in different ways — one gives a nod to history, another is a getaway, and the third embraces the woods and seclusion.

rom their spot at the crook of the Devil’s Elbow — or the point of the elbow, to be exact — Tony and Denise Baiardi don’t miss a second of the action on the Crooked River. This central spot is one of the reasons Tony was drawn to buy then build on the property in 1984. It’s also why he and Denise spend more than half the year’s weekends up north from their home in Howell. “We’ve traveled the whole north, from here,” he noted. “It’s the place to come and recharge my batteries and chill out.” “You can walk out your back door and go to all the lakes, and most importantly, the Great Lakes,” added Denise. “We’re close to the city, too, so you can still have the tranquility of remoteness, but if you want fine dining, shopping … You have access to Charlevoix, Harbor Springs, Cross Village.” The cottage measures 1,976 square feet. The downstairs incorporates the master bedroom, one bathroom and the living and dining space, which is separated from the kitchen by a peninsula. The earthy colors lend warmth and an air of welcoming. In the style of lofts, the ceiling is exposed to the first floor over the living space, peaking at 23 feet. A set of stairs to the second floor reveals a loft space that doubles as a bedroom on busy weekends, along-

side which is a bathroom and another bedroom. Down a short hall is the final guest bedroom, which sits right above the garage. From the living space on the main level, the Crooked River can be seen through walk-in bay windows. Tony — an architectural designer and owner of Baiardi Construction Inc. — planned the view before starting to build. But to make the most of their spot is a covered porch and expansive deck that goes nearly to the river. The Baiardis laugh that anyone who visits as a guest is put on waving duty to all the boats that pass. It’s also a space that allows for easy entertaining, with the white chairs that Tony built sprawling across the deck. There’s also an outside shower around the corner of the house, for a quick rinse off or an outdoor alternative on humid days.

Inland Waterway Continued from 9

A twist on history

Owners: Larry and Mary Biddinger Location: On the Indian River, right before the town of its name, near Burt Lake Size: 3,600 square feet

J

ust looking at the porches on Larry and Mary Biddinger’s home leaves you wanting iced tea and lazy days. Extending a total of 100 feet along the side of their house on the Indian River, the screened-in areas are more like rooms than outdoor space. “We’d had houses with decks before, but to me it was a waste of space. It was always too hot or the bugs were out ... The porch is like another room,” she noted. When the Biddingers purchased the home in January 1998, they had fallen in love with the river spot in the Columbus Beach Club and found the exterior charming. The inside was a different matter, with uneven floors and odd offshoots that were the product of additions through its more than 100 years. Revising the property was done in stages, which made the process less overwhelming, Mary said. First was the seawall in fall 1998; next up was landscaping the waterfront,

done by Drost Landscape Design and Construction of Petoskey and now maintained by North Star Gardens Inc. of Indian River. An artesian well on the property needed a new pool, and the Butterfly Falls it fed needed redoing. Sweet peas line this area now. Working with East Jordan-based Andre M. Poineau Woodworker Inc. as both architect and builder, the Biddingers began the process of planning, revising and replanning the home, all keeping in mind the history. The original structure was completely torn down in September 1999, and the couple moved in in May 2001. “So many people go by and say ‘You just did a great job with remodeling the old house.’ And I just say ‘Thank you,’” Mary said. The home features two floors and a nearby carriage house that triples as a garage, woodworking shop for Larry and guest quarters. The main floor of the home houses the mudroom, living room, sitting room and kitchen, along with the master bedroom and bath. The bath includes a walk-in closet, 

large shower and two vanities, whose mirrors reflect the greenery outside through the window. The master bedroom and living room are on opposite sides of the home but echo each other in construction. The rooms go up two stories, open to the ceiling. Between the two rooms is the kitchen, above which is the second story bedrooms and bathrooms. Balanced with the two-story bedroom and living room on either side, the exterior gives the appearance of two complete stories across the length. The kitchen features green-painted built-in cabinetry and enough marble counter space for the busiest of cooks. 12

Above the stove is a faucet to fill pots with water, an idea Larry had seen in a magazine. A raised counter blocks the sink from view to those in the sitting area beyond it. The decor reflects classic cottage, a combination of design, already-owned items and serendipity in stores. Mary recalled one instance where, when asked about an item’s origin, the answer was Eddie Bauer. Mary grew up at the Columbus Beach Club, and summers traditions of boating the Inland Waterway, fishing or waterskiing are being handed down the generations to the grandkids. “We’re fortunate in that those things we did as children, that we didn’t even think about, we make a point to do it with our grandkids. They’re tradition now,” Mary said. 

Familial touches Mary Biddinger said there were a few musts on her list for this home, all torn from the pages of her past. One was a chest of drawers in an upstairs closet, a feature that was in her mother’s home. Another was a butler’s pantry, which came from her grandmother’s home. It serves as a bar area, with a built-in wine rack and a bar sink cut into one of the counters. Hanging at the top of the window is a piece of stained glass with three tulips that Larry made in the early years of their marriage. “We carted it around for years, and now it has a home,” Mary said.

the seclusion

Owners: Bob and Janice Davis Location: On the Indian River, 15 minutes to Mullet Lake and about 30 to Burt Lake Size: 1,300 square feet

I

n the flat, marshy waters before the Indian River flows into Mullet Lake, a boardwalk stretches to a cabin in the woods. Owned by Bob and Janice Davis, the home was built in five months in 1991 by Indian River Custom Log Homes — the first in the company’s career. Davis always wanted a log home, because “it seems like they’re more comfortable to live in than a regular house, if you like that look.” The 35 cords of cedar for construction were cut from property that had been in the family for years. The trees were cut two years before construction, then milled in Millersburg. “When we started building it, we realized how much wood it took to build a house — and it kept getting smaller and smaller,” he recalled. And so the blueprint was changed to its current 1,300 square feet, which incorporates three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a loft space, kitchen and living and dining area. What the home lacks in stature it

makes up for in warmth from the interior and exterior log finishes, craftsmanship of tongue and groove woodwork and taking full advantage of the river. A wraparound porch features a bench and chairs, all crafted by Davis, that not only look over the Indian River but the land leading to it. This land is traversed by a 300-foot boardwalk to a small lawn at the river’s edge. Davis built the 12-by-12-foot screened-in gazebo, which houses a picnic table, fishing poles and room for the occasional nap. Perched along the shore is a long dock, to which is tied a pontoon and motorboat. They’re rarely docked on summertime weekends, though, when the kids and grandkids come to visit and play on the waterway. “The different seasons down here are really nice. In the winter, the current’s so swift, it doesn’t freeze over, and the swans all congregate here ... The water’s clear and beaches are nice (in the summer),” Davis noted. 

About the

Inland Waterway

The Inland Waterway is a chain of lakes and rivers spanning approximately 40 miles of Northern Michigan. Running through Emmet and Cheboygan counties, the waterway is marked by Crooked and Pickerel lakes to the south and the Cheboygan River Lock to the north. From its south border, the waterway runs through Pickerel and Crooked Lakes, Crooked River and its lock, Burt Lake, Indian River, Mullet Lake, and the Cheboygan River and its lock. It flows right into Lake Huron, allowing easy access to the other Great Lakes and boating destinations. HL

ne of our newest sections is our scattering garden. Loved ones may scatter cremains here at no charge although there is a charge to record the name and genealogical information at the cemetery office if so desired. A granite tablet is located near the garden and is available for inscriptions.

For those who have chosen cremation, Greenwood Cemetery believes it is vitally important to inter cremains in a cemetery rather than to scatter elsewhere. Because of our work with genealogists and our role as keepers of history we know it is important for future generations to have a place to ‘go’ to remember a loved one - perhaps even one they have never met. The cemetery is a resource for genealogy research since it provides a recorded history of our lives for future generations. With this in mind, some families have chosen to memorialize their loved ones here at the cemetery even though scattering elsewhere has already taken place.

Extraordinary Homes

Detailed reflections

Condo decor goes from stale ‘70s to sensational now By Maggie Peterson • Photography by G. Randall Goss

J

ulia and Justin Douglas’ up north home is an oasis of detailed reflections, but it was a far cry from that a year ago. Instead, the condo they had just purchased in the Harborage Condominiums in Harbor Springs was straight out of the 1970s. It fit their desire to be on the water, but that was about it. Justin was sold first, but had some convincing to do. For Julia, it was hard to see the forest for the trees. Now, there’s a whole new look and atmosphere. With building help from Harbor Springs-based Collie Construction Inc., the entire space was gutted and redone beginning in

January. The Chicago-based couple moved in Memorial Day weekend. “We wanted something that was a shabby chic, Malibu Beach look with a loft feel,” Julia said. “What we could keep, we did keep, but there wasn’t much.” The attention to detail is staggering yet accessible. The area rug in the master bedroom is the same as the one in the lower level. The zebra rug in the living room area is echoed in the print of the fabric covering the den’s card table. Mirrors run the length of the living/dining room on the main floor, and play a large part in the decor. All floors are painted white, with dis-

tressed wood on the main and second floor and concrete in the downstairs level. Wood, aged by nature and design, is seen on every level — a chandelier in the master bedroom, the table in the kitchen, a driftwood mirror in a downstairs room. And the subway tiles carry through each of the bathrooms but one, where instead of a shower sits a 69-inch claw foot bathtub. The same subway tile, in Whidbey Matte Sanded from Waterworks, serves as the backsplash in the kitchen. “The tile I loved because it reminded me of sea glass. We would always play on the Point and find sea glass,” Julia said.  HOMelife 21

Detailed reflections Continued from 21

The kitchen, bathrooms and downstairs wet bar were designed by Judy McCaffrey of Etc. Kitchen and Bath in Harbor Springs, who also provided the cabinetry and countertops for the kitchen, wet bar and master bathroom. All levels have views of the marina in Harbor Springs, but the one from the master bedroom is the most expansive. The windows run almost the height of the room, the angled tops mirroring the slant of the ceiling. Old sailing photos line the staircase between the main and upper levels, reflecting a vintage look and the owners’ passion for sailing. The kitchen is open to the living room area, where the eye automatically goes to the zebra skin rug topped with an old-style furniture factory cart. Opposite is a woodburning fireplace framed with black slate, which was originally angled toward the balcony, Julia noted; the builders flattened it to the wall so it would face the room. Directly below the balcony is the patio area. A stone wall offers some seclusion while not blocking the view, and flowing curtains hung on either side lend more privacy and an air reminiscent of South Beach, Julia said. The overall feeling of the condo is not contemporary, but it’s not fair to call it old-fashioned, either. Julia said the intention was to respect tradition but bring a youthful feel to it. “What I really like about the place, and what others say, is that it’s a departure from you’d see in Harbor Springs,” she said, adding, “I like the fact that people who are 20 think it’s cool, people who are 50 think it’s cool, that are 70 think it’s cool.” HL

Clockwise from the top: The kitchen and dining room table are reflected in a wall-length mirror; the wet bar in the lower level; the master bathroom with Italian marble countertop and showers; the master bedroom with a view of the harbor.

Creating outdoor soothing colors and intriguing textures Julia Douglas said the colors of the condo not only play to her tastes, but she finds them soothing as well. Not one for reds, yellows or oranges, her preferences are reflected in the blues, grays, whites and one light pink. These are punctuated by black in picture frames, the staircase banister and the living room’s slate fireplace. Conni Newsome-Lovelace and Melinda Douglas of Douglas Associates in Denver, Colo., guided the decorating process. Julia noted she has always been more interested in textures than patterns. Many of the details are subtle, such as green antiquing on the black banister, studs on the living room chairs and items made of sisal, a twine-like fiber. standing in the kitchen, Julia explained her attention to detail goes all the way to the place settings. she noted the handmade pieces from California’s Napa Valley were chosen based on the water of Harbor springs. The white base plate has a pebbly look to it, while smaller green-hued plates have an uneven glaze as their finish, like the waves. The bowls are a near iridescent dark gray, like the water on a stormy day, Julia said.

Downtown renovations have built-in CHARM What a difference some months make. HomeLife first checked in on these two downtown Petoskey renovations in the February/March 2010 issue, when the

buildings were little more than skeletal beams and bits of bare drywall. But now, fresh colors and modern updates blend seamlessly with the inherent charm that comes naturally to homes that have stood downtown for more than a century. Here’s your look inside.

The

Nielsen-Mattsons While the couple had built three other homes from scratch, this was their first remodel. James, who owns James Mattson Construction, said apart from the bones of the house, nearly everything was replaced. The long list includes wiring, plumbing, a heating system, siding, roof, rafters and exchanging the plaster for drywall. An addition was put on, with a garage on the bottom level, kitchen on the main floor and the master bedroom upstairs. The main floor features a living room, mudroom, message center and kitchen. The Nielsen-Mattsons turned to interior designer Jill Rowley of Charlevoix to help with this floor and the master bedroom. The message center, right off the mudroom, was the former kitchen. While the original cupboards remain, they now hold papers and office items instead of dishes and canned goods. And where the counters used to be is a computer desk. Just around the corner is the kitchen, whose dark granite counters are offset by iced marble blue walls and white cupboards, designed by Chad Boerma with Williams Kitchen and Bath out of Mecosta. There’s space enough in the 21-by-22 foot room for a large island and a dining table. “We didn’t want a formal dining room. We had them in our last three

history of the home Max Putters is the previous owner of the home. He said based on a cursory review of an abstract of the land value change, he found the home was originally built around 1914 by Dr. Pliney Miller. The Putters came across the home when Max was working as a consultant with Emmet County but living in Marquette. When the 28

opportunity came to become the full-time county planner in the area, he and his wife, Mary, started to drive through Petoskey to find out what type of home they could purchase. As they passed the home at the corner of Woodland and Grove, Max recalled they commented to each other, “How come a house like that isn’t for sale?” But about a month later word

compounding services homes and never used them,” Carin noted, later adding, “We did this whole house so that the kids can run all over it. There’s no formal room.” Tying these rooms together is a near-black wood floor of ebonized oak. James had read how to create the look by soaking steel wool in vinegar, then applying to red oak. A coat of tongue oil darkened the finish. The second floor features four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The boys’ room was formerly the master bedroom. The new master includes a foyer, short hallway lined with photos, the bedroom and bathroom, and a walk-in closet. The ceiling to the bedroom is angular, following the roofline. The bath features his and hers vanities, a Jacuzzi tub and an extra-large shower done in subway tiles — “It’s like a car wash,” Carin only half-joked. Up another flight is the finished attic, which doubles as a family room with plenty of space for toys, a large sofa and a television. As attractive as the interior features are, what strikes Carin and James most about their home is its walking access to downtown. There’s barely an incline up to their home, which makes the walking easy, James said. Carin added that between the boys’ school, post office, grocery stores and downtown shops, “we are just a few short blocks to everything we need.” 

traveled through the grapevine that the second owner was looking to move. They inked a handwritten purchase agreement in 1972, and went on to raise their four children in the home. Other than an addition in 1978, Putters said the home was kept mostly as they had first purchased it, before selling it in July 2009 to the NielsenMattson family.

The Roses The dust hasn’t completely settled, but the Rose family is already making the most of their downtown home on Mitchell Street. “It’s an outstanding location,” noted Craig, who grew up in downtown Petoskey himself. “ ... We always had that in-town experience, and I wanted that for the kids.” The structure of the home was mostly kept the same, but an addition was made for a back porch, mudroom, new bathroom, walk-in pantry and theater room; a two-story, three-car garage is planned off the mudroom. Craig said they approached the renovation with the intent of keeping what they could from the original. “We take this pretty seriously,” he noted. “We’re not preservationists, but to get it right, you have to go all the way.” This philosophy extended to the moldings, floor, front door and window panes, although the glass of all 43 windows was replaced. The kitchen’s walk-in pantry has a door made from two windows put together, which slides on hardware from an old barn that used to stand on the property. To create their vision, the Roses enlisted the help of Renee Guthrie and Dawn Whyte of Lake Street Design Studio in Petoskey. The kitchen has an eclectic countryside cottage feel, with walnut counters by Michigan Maple Block and a granite-topped island with a prep sink. “(The granite) is great for prepping, but I love the warmth of the wood,” Edith noted. Added Craig, “The kitchen, mudroom is the heart of the home. Edith is a great chef, so we eat at home a lot.” 30

The mudroom is right off the kitchen, with lockers for each of the three children. Drawings on chalkboard doors not only mark whose is whose, but add whimsy. Off the other end of the kitchen is a dining room. The paint on three of the walls — Sassy Green by Sherwin Williams — was chosen to match the hue of the wallpaper on the accent wall. The front part of the house has several rooms, including the living room and a den/ game room, along with the foyer. Access to the second floor is from two staircases — one off the front entrance and another from the kitchen. Upstairs, the children each have their own rooms — Austin’s a navy blue, Ga-

briella’s thick pink and white stripes, and Juliana’s a vibrant lavender. Juliana’s is the largest of the rooms and features an original, functional woodburning fireplace with mirror above the mantel, with furnishings from Sky Iris in Petoskey. Adjacent is the master bedroom and attached bathroom, with a 7-by-3-foot shower and his and hers vanities. The higher-thanaverage countertops are covered in marble. Combining these modern looks with the original pieces has created a space that looks to the future without forgetting its past, and it’s a look that suits the Roses well. “I read about people who have to beat up their pieces to add charm, but we didn’t have to do that,” Edith said. 

Good Hart home designed around art By Maggie Peterson • Photography by G. Randall Goss

hen the Millers looked to construct their up north home, their list of specifics came straight from the

heart. “We built it to honor the histories of our parents, and keep that continuity going and their spirit alive through their (art) collections,” said Mary Jane. Her husband, Alexander, added, “When we were standing on the lot, with (the designer), I just remember thinking, whatever we do, don’t mess this up. Don’t add something and take away. Just add something. Don’t take away the good things.” The finished product, completed around July 2008 by Jerry Pesarzyk

Builders of Oden, is a 4,114-square-foot home as at peace with its natural setting as it is with the artwork found in every room. The plans were drawn by interior designer Loretta Miles, retired from Loretta Miles Design Associates in Bloomfield Hills, and now a Petoskey resident. Taking into account the desires of the Millers, Miles said she wanted to create a home that worked, utilized every space so nothing was wasted and offered just-right places for art.

Space for art Alexander noted that sometimes, with an especially large or odd piece of

art, it doesn’t look like it quite fits the home. “It looks like you have a house and you have this enormous piece that you lugged in and are trying to work around the whole time,” he said. “Both of our parents were very particular about their design and decorating and art collections, and we had a lot of things that had fallen into our house that we wanted to showcase.” As the art was a key element of the house, Miles said she incorporated it into the plans. One example is around the fireplace of the great room. Not only does the fireplace itself — with its long, narrow, rectangular shape — look like an 

LEFT: The dining room tabletop is reflected in the oval light base on the ceiling. Key to this room is the original vintage poster, “Cognac Jacquet” by Camille Bouchet of France. HOMelife 35

The stairwell to downstairs is punctuated by “The Lake Hums, The Trees Sing to Me,” a diptych encaustic by artist Loretta Miles of Petoskey, also the home’s designer. Attached to the master bedroom is the master bathroom, which incorporates his and her vanities, a glassed-in shower and a separate tub. A private stairwell off the back of the home descends to the water. Designer Loretta Miles said the colors were based around the rough-edged, marbleslab sinks, that owner Mary Jane Miller had chosen.

Masterpiece Continued from 35

art element, space was made for a large oil on linen, “Garden Scroll, II” by New York artist Ellen Phelan. A glass shelf was built into the wall to support a blown glass vase, “Ultramarine Venetian with Prussian Green and Silver Leaves” by Dale Chihuly of Seattle, Wash. Across the room is the kitchen and dining area, with a wall separating them from each other. As the owners and Miles looked over the plans, it became clear there was no space for “Fishing Season Rock around the Clock,” a lampwork glass sculpture by Ginny Ruffner of Seattle, Wash. Looking at the space, Miles suggested angling the wall, growing longer toward the ceiling, to allow for a window in which to place the piece. It’s now visible from both the kitchen and dining room.

No corner wasted Miles said whenever she’s planned a home, the idea is to make the most of the space. The kitchen is a quintessential example of this philosophy. Drawings done to half-inch scale were passed on to Bill Skowten of Creative Cabinets in Cheboygan, who made all the custom cabinetry and finished all the passage doors in the home. The result is a kitchen with cabinets that not only open as is standard, but slide out for spices and other storage, 36

along with one above the refrigerator that opens upward. Inside some of the cabinets are angled shelves. Another instance comes off the front foyer in the powder room. There were glass dishes and containers that needed a home, and an empty recess behind one of the walls became the perfect location for a triangular glass shelving unit, which now showcases the intricate works. In the master bedroom, a ceiling extends as high as the great room’s. As the plans were finalized, Alexander approached Miles about a loft space where he could compose music. It was back to the drawing board, but the final product features a winding wood-and-metal staircase by Jonathan Newbury of Elegant Staircases and Woodworking Inc., which climbs to an upper alcove. The loft offers views not only over the bedroom, but through the large windows overlooking Lake Michigan. There’s even a small window providing a bird’s-eye view of the kitchen and great and dining rooms.

Making it work One important aspect of the home is the lower level, which serves as guest space. Mary Jane said she never wanted guests to feel as if they needed permission to come upstairs. “We were very particular about designing the lower level so that if guests come to stay with us, they don’t have to worry about emerging from their bedrooms or tiptoe upstairs to make their coffee,” she noted. To avoid this, a sitting area features a kitchenette with coffeemaker, mini-fridge, sink, toaster and microwave. Each of the two guest bedrooms — one sleeps two while the other has room for four — offers a private bathroom and plenty of closet space. There is also access to the outdoors through a private door. An outdoor bathroom, built into another recess of would-be-wasted space, allows for rinsing off after a swim or day on the property’s 500 feet of shoreline. HL HOMelife 37

Seeing the light High ceilings and artwork posed lighting challenges in the Miller home. The answer came through low-voltage, track and pendant lighting built into the design. The pendants were measured down to the angle and reflection, to best illuminate the pieces. The kitchen benefits from this style as well, with lights hanging from the dropped beam ceiling. Track lighting is used in the dining and great rooms, to enhance the overall look of the space. Six lights above the dining room table are placed to brighten the seats where diners would be. But one of the stand-out pieces of lighting is in the stairway between the main and lower levels. A chandelier hangs from the ceiling, its lights attached by twisted silver arms. The Millers said because Mary Jane’s nephews had grown up going to her mother’s cabin in the Good Hart area, which they sold, they were looking for a way to welcome the boys to their new home. The answer came in this chandelier, which when it arrived had its silver arms hanging straight down. Using a ladder, the nephews helped to bend the lighted arms in all different directions, making their mark.
