GIS in
Gaylord
Sheila Simpson, Director Lake Superior State University-Gaylord Regional Center select group of North Central Michigan College students has ventured forth into the new field of geographic information science (GIS), a blend of technology, geology, and geography that leads to a wide choice of indemand careers. The students are enrolled in the GIS Associate of Applied Science degree program at the University Center at Gaylord.
A
Graduates can continue on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Geographic Information Science (AGIS) at Lake Superior State University’s Gaylord Center. The unique collaboration between North Central and LSSU allows students to build on their success and easily transfer the credits they have earned. North Central is one of just a few community colleges in Michigan to offer the associate’s degree in GIS. LSSU-Gaylord is the only university in northern Lower Michigan to offer this cuttingedge AGIS bachelor’s degree for students throughout the region. It is one of the most exciting educational opportunities we offer for technology-oriented careers. What is GIS? Do Google Earth and OnStar sound familiar? These are just two examples of the geospatial uses of GIS.

Lecture SERIES:
Robert Kenner, director of
FOOD, INC.
Elementary/Secondary Education (BA/Post–BA/Endorsements) Summer & Fall 2011
Special Education– Learning Disabilities (Endorsement/Major) Fall 2011
Wednesday, April 20 The director of the documentary, Food, Inc., will appear at North Central as part of the Lecture Series on Wednesday, April 20. Robert Kenner’s graphic look into the environmental, health and social impacts of the food production business has changed the way many people view food and how we eat. Variety called Food, Inc., “a civil horror movie for the socially conscious, the nutritionally curious, and the hungry. It does for the supermarket what Jaws did for the beach.” The free event will be presented in the Student and Community Resource Center gymnasium at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are required and are available at the North Central business office and bookstore on the Petoskey campus, at our Gaylord, Cheboygan and East Jordan locations, at chamber of commerce offices in Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Indian River and Charlevoix, and at the Grain Train Natural Foods Co-op in Petoskey.

Guatamala Lecture “Service Learning and Global Awareness: Student Immersion in Guatemala,” is the topic of the next Michigan Global Awareness Consortium lecture at North Central. The free program will be held on Monday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in the Library. This dynamic, interactive presentation focuses on the people of Guatemala, their lack of opportunities and modern conveniences, the political situation and issues related to health, women, indigenous people and human rights. The program will feature Nick Holton, a math faculty member at Kirtland Community College. His students travelled to Guatemala last May. For more information, contact hleithauser@ncmich.edu.

Scholars List “Scholars List,” academic recognition for part-time students, has been established effective with the Fall 2011 semester. Where can you go from here? Almost anywhere! North Central offers courses of study and degree programs for students who wish to transfer to senior institutions. Transferability is essential since liberal arts education is an important part of our mission. North Central students have the assurance of transfer agreements between colleges, along with curriculum guides and an important website, www.macrao.org, to verify the transferability of courses. The website is maintained by the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers (MACRAO) and is easy to use. Participating universities post on-line transfer guides on the MACRAO site.
