PETOSKEY • BAY HARBOR • BAY VIEW

Petoskey he Petoskey area has been a destination for those in search of the good life since the 1800s — even if only for a week of vacation. Petoskey is a hub of activity in a small-town sense, with extensive shopping, dining and entertainment possibilities. And then there is the setting, with views of the sweeping waters of Little Traverse Bay abounding and the proclaimed “million-dollar sunsets.” Just north of downtown Petoskey on U.S. 31 is Bay View Association, established in 1875. This National Historic Landmark community features homes in Victorian and Queen Anne-era design set amid open greens and woods. The association’s annual music festival is the oldest, continuously running arts and music festival in the country. Bay Harbor, located 10 minutes west of Petoskey toward Charlevoix, spans five miles on the shore of Little Traverse Bay. The Village at Bay Harbor is open to the public, with many shopping and dining opportunities.

12

FARMERS MARKET

The Petoskey farmers market makes its annual appearance beginning Friday, June 17. The downtown event features a block filled with the products of local harvest — fruits, vegetables, flowers and organic meats — 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Fridays through early fall on Howard Street, between Mitchell and Michigan streets.

BEACHES

Walking distance from downtown Petoskey is a small city beach in Bayfront Park near the breakwater. Near the grassy expanse of Festival Place, the spot allows plenty of room for kids to play, or for a picnic lunch. Petoskey State Park has one of the most popular beaches in the region, with just more than a mile of beachshore on Little Traverse Bay. New additions to the park this summer include a fit trail with exercise stations, and there are plans to offer morning yoga on the beach. The park is accessible via bike from the Little Traverse Wheelway.

Round Lake Preserve offers 1.5 miles of trail with frontage on Round Lake on its 58 acres, and is a short stop off the Little Traverse Wheelway near Petoskey State Park. East of Petoskey seven miles is the Allan and Virginia McCune Preserve, featuring three miles of trail and frontage on Minnehaha Creek. Biking is allowed. Preserve maps are available by calling (231) 347-0991. The Little Traverse Wheelway is one of the most popular trails in the area, with approximately 26 miles of paved surface stretching from Harbor Springs to Charlevoix; local connecting routes lead right into these towns. Width of the trail varies from 6 to 10 feet, and much of the trail travels along the shoreline. Favorites views include from the bluffs between Petoskey and Bay Harbor, and along Bayfront Park in Petoskey. The trail is ideal for biking, along with walking, running and inline skating. Set on a former railroad bed, the Petoskey-Mackinaw City Trail is an unimproved trail that runs 35 miles between the two cities. Starting at Spring Lake Park along M-119, the rural route cuts through Conway, Oden, Alanson, Pellston, Levering and Carp Lake before ending at the trailhead off Shepler Drive in Mackinaw. It provides easy access to the Michigan Fisheries Visitors Center in Oden and Wilderness State Park in Carp Lake, among other attractions. Trail maps are available by calling Top of Michigan Trails Council, (231) 348-8280. n

Harbor Springs

T

he northern Emmet County shoreline is dotted by the towns of Harbor Springs, Good Hart and Cross Village. Most southern is Harbor Springs, which is nestled along the northern shore of Little Traverse Bay. Protected by Harbor Point, many have sought shelter in its waters. The downtown offers a host of shopping and dining opportunities, and a visit wouldn’t be complete without walking along the shore and marina piers. M-119 and the famous Tunnel of Trees lead north to the communities of Good Hart and Cross Village. These stops along the path offer scenic beauty and boutiques not found anywhere else.

FARMERS MARKET

The Harbor Springs farmers market will again set up shop on West Main Street in downtown. Stands will feature fresh produce, flowers, honey and meat. Hours for the market are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays starting June 18 and continuing through Labor Day; after Labor Day, the market is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays through mid-October. Good Hart Market Days make their return the first, third and fifth Saturdays of the month July 2-Oct. 15 at the Good Hart General Store. The event includes local farmers, artists and artisans, along with live music, foods and special events on specific dates.

BEACHES

The secluded Church Beach and Readmond Township Beach lie near Good Hart, both accessible via Lambkin Road. Church Beach gets its name because of its proximity to St. Ignatius Church. Harbor Spring’s city beach is located on West Bay Street in Zorn Park. A short walk from the downtown area, the beach includes a marked swimming area and a raft to swim out to. Lifeguards are on duty 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily during the open season of mid-June through Labor Day. Other amenities include restrooms, picnic tables and changing rooms. And for those whose four-legged friends want to take a dip, Zoll Street Beach in Harbor Springs is dogfriendly.

ADVENTURE

Skydive Harbor Springs offers the thrill-seeker a unique way to get the adrenaline pumping. Tandem jumps are suggested for beginners. (231) 242-8822 or www.skydiveharborsprings.com. Boyne Highlands’ Zipline Adventure Tour features sailing through the trees and open valleys of the Harbor Springs resort at speeds up to 25 mph. There are eight individual lines on the route at various lengths and heights — the highest is 55 feet and the longest, the Twin Zip, is more than 1,300 feet long. Call (231) 5263835 for days, times and reservations.

TRAILS

Located between Harbor Springs and nearby ski resorts is the Offield Family Preserve. Two parking lots and nearly four miles of trails are found on the 380 acres. Goodhart Farms Preserve features 7.5 miles of trails perfect for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The preserve has grown to 645 acres. Three easy trails cover 30 acres of wetlands and uplands taking you to a pond and to the beach at the Thorne Swift Nature Preserve, which also has a formal nature center and regular summer programs. There is a $3 parking fee per car for non-West Traverse Township residents. Call (231) 526-6401 for hours. Just north of Harbor Springs lies the Stutsmanville Bog. The fern-lined portion of the short trail to the bog is a particular favorite for young children to play hide and seek. A bog overlook bench and interpretive signs are found. Park on the east side of State Road just before Stutsmanville Road. Preserve maps are available by calling (231) 347-0991. Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs offers wide and wooded trails for easy riding as well as more challenging rides from the top of the hills. n

FAMILY FUN

Horseback trail rides are offered at Boyne Highlands, leaving from the equestrian facilities and traveling for one and two hours on trails accessible only by horseback. For rates, days, times and reservations, call (231) 526-3036. THE GUIDE

CHARLEVOIX • BEAVER ISLAND

Charlevoix edged between two lakes, Charlevoix lacks for nothing in water views. And the town does not lack for stores, either: fudge shops, restaurants and art galleries line Bridge Street, which runs through Charlevoix’s downtown. Alongside Bridge Street is East Park, where summer concerts and movies play all summer long at the pavilion. Enjoy, too, the weekly farmers market, at which vendors sell wares such as fruit, vegetables, baked goods, jams and honey — all of which has to be made and harvested within a 30 mile radius of downtown Charlevoix. Beaver Island offers adventures for visitors who enjoy all types of activities — from hiking, biking and hitting the beach to sampling one of the island’s bevy of restaurants.

FARMERS MARKET

The downtown Charlevoix farmers market will run longer than usual this year. Beginning June 16 and running through Oct. 27, the market will be open for browsing from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. every Thursday on Bridge Street along East Park. THE GUIDE

CONCERT SERIES

The Charlevoix concert series kick-starts on Wednesday, June 29, with a special engagement by the Air National Guard Band of the Great Lakes. The series runs every Thursday thereafter through Sept. 1 with groups such as the Interlochen Ensemble and The Wild Turkeys. All performances begin at 7 p.m. in the Odmark Performance Pavilion in Charlevoix’s East Park. Charlevoix’s Movies by the Marina returns as well, including movies such as “How To Train Your Dragon” and “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” Films air at 9:15 p.m. beginning Monday, June 27. The final movie showing is at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22. Bring a chair or blanket to lounge on while listening to music or watching a movie. (231) 547-3257 or www. downtowncharlevoix.com. 

BEACHES

Just south of Charlevoix, bordering Fisherman’s Island State Park’s 2,678 acres, is five miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Within town limits, find Michigan Beach, which has white sand alongside stone hunting on the shores of Lake Michigan. Depot Beach and Ferry Beach are both located on Lake Charlevoix, where the warmer water can be a draw. Michigan, Depot and Ferry beaches offer restroom facilities, picnic areas, playgrounds, lifeguards, and Ferry and Michigan beaches both have concession stands. Find a more rustic beach at Mount McSauba. No bathroom facilities are nearby, and a small parking lot is located off a pass at the dunes.

FAMILY FUN

ISLAND HOPPING

Thirty miles out in the inland sea of Lake Michigan stands Beaver Island, Michigan’s Emerald Isle. Rich in Irish history, the island offers many Irish-themed stores and restaurants. The adjective “Emerald” could also describe the aerial view of the island: covered in forests, Beaver Island is known for not only its hiking and biking trails, but the hunting, fishing, camping and beach opportunities it offers. The island is anchored by two historic lighthouses: St. James Lighthouse on the north end of the island, and Beaver Head Lighthouse in the south. Beaver Head Lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places while the St. James Lighthouse marks the entrance to St. James Harbor, on which Beaver Island’s main street lies.

TRAILS

Winding throughout Fisherman’s Island State Park is the Fisherman’s Island Foot Trail, a three-mile hiking trail. The Susan Creek Preserve lies east of Charlevoix, along U.S. 31. The 223-acre preserve offers 1.4 miles of trails as well as the adjacent trails of the Taimi Hoag Preserve. Bike along the Charlevoix Township bike path, which continues from the Little Traverse Wheelway into downtown Charlevoix. n

Northbound

A

s those headed northbound get closer to the tip of the mitt, towns become fewer and farther between. The landscape is filled with forests, and, once in a while, a river slips by I-75 North. In the case of Indian River, the river after which the town is named flows beneath the highway, a signpost that the town is not far away. The Sturgeon and the Indian rivers border the town of Indian River. The town itself sits on the shores of Burt Lake, and the confluence of the three bodies of water makes the town ideal for kayaking, tubing, rafting, canoeing and fishing. In addition to the ice cream shops and retail stores in Indian River’s downtown area, nearby there are nature preserves, Burt Lake State Park and Cooperation Park, which offer sports fields, hiking trails and pet walks. For an up-close-and-personal look at the other small towns peppered throughout the region, take U.S. 31 north through the villages of Alanson and Pellston. Alanson offers boating fun with Crooked Lake and Crooked River, and stands at the southern end of the Inland Waterway. Boaters can grab a bite to eat at various restaurants in the village. Farther north on U.S. 31 is Pellston, a village known for its antique shops. During the summer, catch a concert at the gazebo and see what’s going on at its

52

Summerfest. Both I-75 and U.S. 31 lead to Mackinaw City, the gateway both to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the celebrated Mackinac Island. But more than just a gateway, the town has many shops and museums to browse while taking in the views of the Mackinac Bridge and the Straits of Mackinac.

FARMERS MARKET

The farmers market in Indian River returns 3-7 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday June 15Oct. 29. Fresh produce, fresh-cut flowers, syrup and honey will be available. The market will be located in the Indian River Depot parking lot, next to the chamber of commerce.

Sturgeon Bay provides a secluded beach experience. Located between Mackinaw City and Cross Village, Sturgeon Bay is accessible from within Wilderness State Park (entrance in Carp Lake) as well as Sturgeon Bay Drive. The sandy beach with its surrounding dunes and shallow water is great for a family day. Situated near downtown Indian River, where the Indian River runs into Burt Lake, is DeVoe Beach. It features a large, sandy beach and a picnic area.

ADVENTURE

Glide over the Straits of Mackinac with Mackinaw Parasailing. Solo or tandem trips are offered at 300 or 600 feet in the air, and the boat’s deck allows for take-offs and landings. Weather permitting, set sail from Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island and St. Ignace. Mackinaw Parasailing is available for air tours seven days a week, and hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. For information, reservations and rates, call (866) 436-7144 or visit www.mackinawparasailing.com.

FAMILY FUN

For a little bit of a paddling challenge, float the Sturgeon River — the fastest river in the Lower Peninsula. Big Bear Adventures in Indian River offers rentals for family fun. Canoes and kayaks are available for adventurous paddlers — some experience steering is suggested — and trips range from 1.5 to 5 hours. Tubes and rafts provide a more stable float for people of all ages and experience levels. Rafts hold up to 7 THE GUIDE

River trips end at Burt Lake State Park; state park passes for those who would like to stay a little bit longer in the park are available via the Recreational Passport, a sticker available when drivers renew their license plates. Until the time of plate renewal, entrance to state parks is free. Passes are available for those from out of state at state park offices. Big Bear also offers an 18-hole adventure miniature golf course with waterfalls, hills and trees. For rates and more information, call (231) 238-8181 or visit www. bigbearadventures.com. Thunder Falls Family Water Park of Mackinaw City, the only outdoor water park in the area, offers 12 slides and a wave pool, among other attractions. TRAILS

Hike and bike through the combined 482 acres of the Colonial Point/Chaboiganing preserves. Easy trails totaling 2.5 miles are located near Burt Lake, east of Brutus. Andreae Preserve features more than a mile frontage on Pigeon River and a mile of hiking trails, all stretched throughout 111 acres of land. Preserve maps are available by calling (231) 347-0991. Spanning the almost 62 miles between Gaylord and Mackinaw City is the North Central State Trail. The 10-foot-wide packed, crushed limestone surface trail offers varied terrain and easy access to Gaylord, Vanderbilt, Wolverine, Indian River, Topinabee, Cheboygan and Mackinaw City. The Wildwood Hills Pathway is located between Petoskey and Indian River, and its access point offers parking off Wildwood Road. A favorite of mountain bikers, the area has multiple loops totaling 9.3 miles. Approximately 20 miles of trails open to hiking wind through Wilderness State Park in northern

Emmet County. Portions of the trails are open to biking, and the North Country Trail overlaps seven miles of the trails.

ISLAND HOPPING

The only motors to come near Mackinac Island are the ferries that bring people to the island. Otherwise, a visit to the island is a step back in time. Horses and bicycles fill in as the preferred mode of transportation, and it’s not uncommon to see people in period dress, such as women in 18th century clothing as well as soldiers from the same period standing guard at Fort Mackinac.

SOUTHBOUND: EAST JORDAN • BOYNE CITY • BOYNE FALLS • ELLSWORTH • WALLOON LAKE

Southbound hose looking to pair a day on the water with shopping and dining opportunities need look no further than the Boyne and Jordan valleys region, near southbound U.S. 131. Starting in the north, Walloon Lake is a favorite spot for boaters. There are five basins of the lake, and the jagged shoreline offers new places to discover. The village of Walloon is settled at the foot, with a park and general store to stock up on supplies. Boyne City had undergone a cultural evolution over the past few years, with art galleries popping up amid the boutiques and restaurants lining the downtown streets. Breathtaking sunsets can be enjoyed from atop Avalanche Mountain or from the marina at the foot of Lake Charlevoix’s main arm. To the east of Boyne City is Boyne Falls, which every August draws those from near and far to its Polish Festival. Farther south in Charlevoix County is East Jordan.

58

Positioned where the Jordan River meets Lake Charlevoix’s South Arm, the town’s easy access from the water make it a good spot for a day trip via boat. The Jordan River is also a hot spot for canoeing and kayaking.

FARMERS MARKET

Veterans Park is the spot for Boyne City’s farmers market 8 a.m.-noon every Wednesday and Saturday May through October. Aisles feature fresh-from-thefarm produce, along with flowers and handmade goods. East Jordan’s farmers market features local produce and wares. The market runs 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursdays, May 12 through October, in Sportsman Park on M-32/Bridge Street. Changes were made for this year’s farmers market in Ellsworth. The annual event will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays, July through September, across from the high school at the ball diamond, where C-48 and C-65 meet.  THE GUIDE

CHARLEVOIX COUNTRY CLUB

Golf

N

orthern Michigan is indeed a summer paradise, what with its abundant lakes, rivers and streams, natural woodlands and trails, campgrounds, gorgeous sunsets and near-perfect weather from May through October — to name just a few of its amenities. At the top of that list for some — no, make that many — is golf, world class golf. Northern Michigan is truly a player’s paradise, and the area caters to all colors in the golf spectrum: The weekend duffer, the beginner to the serious low-handicapper, the serious highhandicapper, the social set, kids, the after-work nine-holer and anyone and everyone else in between. Here’s an unscientific and subjective guide to the “best ...” that Northern Michigan golf offers. Best place to impress: Bay Harbor. Boyne USA’s crown jewel,

66

just west of Petoskey off U.S. 31, has established itself as one of the state’s, if not the Midwest’s, finest. You’ll be treated like royalty, and you’ll never forget the view and the feeling of 27 of the best holes you’ll ever play. (231) 439-4028. Best test of courage: Dunmaglas in Charlevoix is not as rugged as it once was, but it still packs plenty of punch and you’d better bring your ‘A’ game. Bigtime trouble also lurks at Crooked Tree near Petoskey, as well as any Boyne USA course, all of which can be as testy as they are beautiful. Dunmaglas: (231) 547-4653. Crooked Tree: (231) 439-4030. Best place for a family round: Charlevoix Municipal Golf Club, Ye Nyne Olde Holles in Advance and Boyne Rapids Adventure Golf in Boyne City. Charlevoix and Ye Nyne are both charming old-style, ninehole courses, and the atmosphere

at both is relaxed. Both courses will challenge even the most experienced player, but they won’t punish a beginner. Boyne Rapids is a scaled-down course with holes ranging from 15-100 yards. Another solid play in this category is The Mallard, just outside of East Jordan. Each of the four courses come down on the affordable side. Charlevoix Municipal Golf Club: (231) 547-3268. Ye Nyne: (231) 582-7609. Boyne Rapids: (231) 582-3505. The Mallard: (231) 536-3636. Best place for that old-time feeling: Harbor Point in Harbor Springs and Belvedere in Charlevoix. Harbor Point, which sits on the bluff overlooking Little Traverse Bay, features majestic trees and loads of charm. Carts are available, but it’s very walkable and players will feel like they’re stepping back to the days of rumble seats. Rerouting and renovations have done nothing THE GUIDE

but improve the majestic and classic layout. The Belvedere is simply one of the must-plays in Northern Michigan, if not the state. The former longtime home to the Michigan Amateur is, like Harbor Point, a trip back in time, when the biggest names in golf were Jones, Sarazan and Hogan. Belvedere: (231) 547-2611. Harbor Point: (231) 526-2951. Best kept secret: Charlevoix Country Club and Indian River Golf Club. Charlevoix is a well-groomed, relatively young course that packs a punch with water on 11 of its 18 holes. It is included in the “Golf Charlevoix” promotion that includes Belvedere and Dunmaglas, each of which offers its own distinct first-class feel. Indian River, just east of the Emmet-Cheboygan County line, is another in the wellkept department that is cut through gorgeous tall hardwoods. Indian River: (231) 238-7011. Charlevoix Country Club: (231) 547-9796. Best place not to break the bank: There are several good, solid plays in this category, including The Mallard in East Jordan, Springbrook Hills in Walloon Lake and Bear River Links in Walloon Lake, Maple Ridge in Brutus and Charlevoix Golf Club. You’ll get a nice, fair, golf experience at a relatively reasonable rate, and the food and service is top notch at most of these stops. Springbrook: (231) 535-5155. Bear River Links: (231) 535-2400. Maple Ridge: (231) 529-6574. Best newcomer: True North in Harbor Springs. The 7,000-yard plus layout and amenities are first class all the way. Course designer Jim Engh brings an impressive resume, one that includes Golf Digest’s 2003 Architect of the Year. True North was rated the state’s No. 4 course allowing public play, and No. 8 overall. (231) 526-3300. Best place to find a “name” course: Boyne Highlands features THE GUIDE

two that pop immediately to mind, the Donald Ross Memorial and Arthur Hills. The Ross is a compilation of the famed designer’s favorite holes, from Oakland Hills to Pinehurst No. 2. Hills has designed courses all over the country and his layout at the Highlands has become a must-play on any serious golfer’s list. The Heather at the Highlands is as good as it gets in Northern Michigan and will host the 100th Michigan Amateur in 2011. Boyne: (800) 462-6963. Best place to settle a bet: For those among us who may be inclined to play for a little something other than pride when we tee it up with our buddies, Chestnut Valley in Harbor Springs is the perfect venue to settle things up if you’re all-square after 18. Chestnut’s distinctive 19th, a par 3 in the shadow of the club’s beautiful log cabin clubhouse, is just what the doctor ordered. (231) 526-9100. Best views: There are several courses which take full advantage of sweeping views of Little Traverse Bay as well as the beautiful Northern Michigan countryside. Included in this group are Bay Harbor, Crooked Tree, Harbor Point and Little Traverse Bay Golf Club. The view from the Little Traverse Bay restaurant and from the Bay

Harbor clubhouse are breathtaking, picture postcard stuff. Little Traverse Bay: (231) 526-6200. Best bet that you’ll go back again: Hidden River Golf & Casting Club. Extremely well manicured, the course is built along the meandering Maple River and simply put, it’s exceptional and unforgettable, and became the ninth member of Boyne’s stable of unforgettable championship layouts this year. Hidden River could be in the best kept secret category, but word has spread that this course, with its gorgeous log-cabin style clubhouse and first-rate restaurant, should not be overlooked when it comes to the best the area has to offer. (231) 5294653. Best bet to join the elite: The Chief in Bellaire opened its doors a decade ago, and it has established itself as a legitimate layout sure to be mentioned in the same breath as the Hidden Rivers, the Little Traverse Bays and the Charlevoix Country Clubs of the Northern Michigan golf world. The unique layout features dramatic elevation changes and wide variety of holes carved through classic hardwoods. The signature finishing hole is a 420-yard par 4. The Chief’s sister course, Hawk’s Eye, is in the same league. (231) 533-9000. THE CHIEF
