Venetian Festival 2011

A word from Mr. Venetian BRING ON VENETIAN! Late July has been noteworthy in Charlevoix for eight decades, as the height of our summer season ushers in the grand Charlevoix homecoming celebration which is now simply known as “Venetian.” A legion of 500 volunteers and 350 financial contributors will once again join forces to stage Charlevoix’s unparalleled hometown Festival. Although the plentiful activities of Venetian are characteristic of a metropolitan area event, Venetian remains true to its small town roots. Venetian calls one and all to set aside the trials and tribulations of daily life, to elevate our spirit of community and to join together in a homecoming celebration with family, friends and visitors.

So bring on July and celebrate! Celebrate life in Charlevoix. Celebrate our blessings. Celebrate Venetian. Lifelong memories await you.

Dan Barron President Charlevoix Venetian Festival, Inc.

Venetian Festival 2011

Rhythms of Venetian The Charlevoix Venetian Festival is known for many things, but among the most notable is the wide assortment of entertainment it offers through the “Rhythms of Venetian” which this year will grace Charlevoix’s 81st Annual Venetian Festival stages July 16 through July 23 with both locally and nationally-known bands. The Grand Traverse Resort and Casinos is the sponsor of the 2011 “Rythms of Venetian.”

• Tuesday, July 19 • Saturday, July 16 The Venetian AquaPalooza Boating Party kicks off the week’s entertainment at the Ferry Beach pier stage from 12:30-5 p.m. — The Sterling Heights/Troybased Caribbean Blue Band kicks things off in island style with their brand of reggae, calypso and R&B music. All three members of the band, which has been together for about five years, are members of the Detroit Parrothead Club, and do “the Jimmy Buffett thing” along with originals and a mix of classic rock. The AquaPalooza Boating Party is simultaneously staged just off the shore of Ferry Beach with music, refreshments and more.

Nail, a Missourinative, cut his musical teeth on a record collection that included Stevie Wonder, Elton John and the Beatles. The singer-songwriter then moved on to country: “I ‘discovered’ country music in the early 90’s along with everyone else my age,” he says, “but I guess I kind of got more obsessive than everybody else.” Hard knocks and heartache, good times and bad, small towns and big cities - it’s all in his music. Venetian Festival 2011

What’s missing at Venetian? Have you ever noticed what is missing at the Venetian Festival? It isn’t live entertainment. During Venetian Week, bands in East Park and throughout town will be jumping with a wide variety of music. It isn’t kids’ activities. The Venetian Games include kids and teens in soccer, basketball, running, sailing, golf, tennis and more. Teens are provided their own music venue at the “Battle of the Bands.” Kid’s Day at Lake Michigan Beach also provides a slew of low and no cost children’s entertainment. It isn’t spectator opportunities. The street parade and the boat parade have entertained spectators for decades. It certainly won’t be fireworks that are missing, considering Venetian features two nights of world class fireworks displays.

What’s missing is admission prices. All of the big events and entertainment offered at the Venetian Festival are absolutely free to the public. But, it still costs the Venetian Festival upwards of $250,000 to put on its premier Festival, which is why the nonprofit organization needs your help. If you’ve ever enjoyed a concert in the park, Kid’s Day, the Venetian Games, the street parade, the Venetian boat parade or the spectacular fire-

works displays, please contribute, so that we can continue to bring you quality entertainment and activities in the future. Please do not look away when its time to contribute. By donating to the Festival, you can become a noted member of the Venetian Burgee Club. Anyone who donates $100 or more becomes a member of the Club and receives a burgee pennant. The pennants are emblazoned with the Venetian logo, the current year and the level of sponsorship.

Donation levels are: • VIP level, $7,500 minimum donation with a green burgee; • Admiral level, $3,000 minimum donation with a blue burgee; • Captain level, $1,000 minimum donation with a red burgee; • First mate level, $500 minimum donation with a gold burgee; and • Crew level, $100 minimum donation with a white burgee.

Donations may be sent to: Charlevoix Venetian Festival, Inc., PO Box 120, Charlevoix, Michigan 49720 or visit the Venetian Festival Merchandise Stand in East Park during the Festival.

Carnival of Venetian

Kids and grown-ups alike will find something to thrill them at the alwayspopular Venetian Festival carnival. The carnival, which will begin on Wednesday, July 20, will include popular rides such as bumper cars, Tilt-a-Whirl and the Gravitron to more docile rides for the younger ones. Returning to the Venetian Festival, Traverse City-based Arnold Amusements will again be providing the rides, games and goodies. Festival officials said they invited Arnold Amusements after hearing very positive feedback from carnival-goers who enjoyed their offerings last year. The rides and amusements will remain in their usual position up Mason Street and in the city parking lots to the north and south of Mason Street. Rides, games and treats will be available from 5-11 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20; noon-11 p.m. on Thursday, July 21; 1-11 p.m. on Friday, July 22 and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. On Wednesday, all rides are $1 each and on Thursday, (which is also Kids’ Day at the festival) you can enjoy unlimited rides with the purchase of a $15 armband. On Friday tickets are regularly priced, however, starting at 5pm, $20 armbands may be purchased. Regular tickets are otherwise $1 each, sheets of 20 for $20 and sheets of 44 for $40. All rides take three or four tickets.

State officials recommend adults take an active role in choosing rides that are appropriate for children and that all riders take note of each ride’s warnings and restrictions, especially those with heart and back conditions and women who are pregnant.

Venetian Festival 2011

Parades of Venetian

The festivities start at 11 a.m. with a street parade showcasing everything from antique cars and marching bands to highland pipers.

Everyone loves a parade and the Venetian Festival has twice the fun, offering one on land and another in the water on Saturday, July 23. The festivities kick off at 11 a.m. with the annual Venetian Festival Street Parade complete with everything you’d expect in a summertime festival parade. Parade entries typically number about 75 and include everything from marching bands, clowns, floats, antique cars, and royalty from area festivals — including the newly crowned Miss Charlevoix and her court. The parade will travel down Bridge Street from Carpenter to the Clinton Street traffic light. After the parade, the festivities will continue at East Park. Later, as the evening’s shows end, spectators can turn their eyes to Round Lake for the 81st Boat Parade, “Hollywood on the Water.” This event attracts thousands of spectators every year as boats of all shapes and sizes, adorned with hundreds of lights, music, and animation parade around Round Lake starting at 10 p.m. Boats of many shapes and sizes are welcome to participate, but festival officials are limiting the number of boats to 20 this year and boat length is limited to 75 feet.

Boats will be judged on the following categories: Best of Fleet, Best Large Power Boat (more than 35 feet), Best Small Power Boat (less than 35’), Best Large Sailboat (more than 35 feet), Best Small Sailboat (less than 35 feet), Most Creative, and Best Illuminated. There will also be a People’s Choice Award for the best dockside decorated boat. There are safety and presentation requirements to meet in order to participate. To register, or for more information, contact boat parade chairman, Linda Bradley at (231) 675-9633. After the boat parade, the evening and the festival will end brilliantly as low aerial, high intensity fireworks fill the sky above Round Lake harbor.

The boat parade will begin at 10 p.m. in Round Lake followed by fireworks.
