Following that, the Christmas in Indian River event begins at 5 p.m., when Santa will arrive in a parade, Mrs. Claus reads for a story time and a tree lighting will be held downtown. Winterfest will be Jan. 25-26 in Indian River, when sled dog races, snowshoe hikes, snowman building contest and other winter festivities take place. Holiday festivities and shopping specials will continue through the weekend. Winterfest arrives in Mackinaw City after the new year holiday. It will take place Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 1719, including snow carving, chili cook-off, euchre tournament and loads of family fun. ki season means equipment. And repairs. Maybe even lessons. There’s ski edge sharpening, waxing, binding and boot repairs, plus much more to keep you slick and safe on the slopes. Northwest Lower Michigan offers a host of local businesses designed to provide ski season tune-ups to get your gear in tip-top shape. Tuning professionals will sharpen ski edges and ensure there’s no rust or gouges from the prior season and subsequent summer storage. Additionally, bindings and boots can be damaged, so checking that bindings are secure and tight will help foster safety on the ski hills. If you haven’t got any ski equipment, there are plenty of places to rent gear for a day on the slopes. This can be valuable both for infrequent skiers and those who wish to test drive equipment before investing in their own gear. Finally, those who want to brush up on their downhill skills or learn how to master the skis versus gravity game can enroll in ski lessons, available at
many local ski resorts or city recreation departments. Lessons are offered by Nub’s Nob and Boyne Highlands, both in Harbor Springs, Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls and Mount McSauba in Charlevoix.

THE GUIDE
Silent sports Cross country skis and snowshoes offer an opportunity to set your own pace in Michigan’s winter wonderland The silent sports of winter — cross country skiing and snowshoeing — land its aficionados smack in the middle of snow-covered wilderness, activities that take advantage of winter’s stillness. These winter sports involve less impact on skeletal joints and to a great degree, minimal impact to the environment. Woods and waters best left quiet can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace by both beginners and advanced cross country skiers and snowshoers. Trails abound to offer soft, snowy settings or more challenging routes for the selfpropelled wintertime woodsy folks. Most trails are available to both cross country skiers and those who use snowshoes, unless marked otherwise. If new to these silent winter sports, please note that it is considered common courtesy for snowshoers to avoid the cross country ski tracks in the snow, sharing the trail without marring the set tracks.

Hit the slopes!
Local ski resorts debut new features, invest in snow-making upgrades

oth Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands will have additional snow guns on the hills this winter, as well as newly launched amenities. The Boyne resorts added 40 Boyne Low-E fan guns at Boyne Highlands and 10 of the proprietary snow guns at Boyne Mountain. The marginal temperature snow-making capability of the fan guns enables the resort to have better coverage and the ability to quickly expand terrain. Additionally, Boyne Mountain’s snow-making efficiency and capacity received an upgrade with a new 1,000 gallons per minute water pump that allows increased flow and pressure from the base and mid-mountain pumping

stations. The result is expected to be improved output and snow quality. New electronic live-time signs also are now installed at the base of the slopes at both Boyne resorts, a way for skiers to learn which trails and chair lifts are open or closed. Also, Boyne Mountain’s beginner chair lift, Boyneland, will have increased capacity with 13 added triple chairs providing access to the resort’s 14-acre free novice area, while North Boyne, a favorite trail among freestyle and ski racers, increased lighting for night skiing and riding. Also new this year at both Boyne resorts is on-snow play areas with fun terrain and features designed to introduce children between 3 and 6 years to snowboarding. Mellow rollers, small berms and ground level
features at these Riglet Parks will allow young riders to feel the balance they need to ride, while creating the muscle memory for making turns on the slopes. The park at Boyne Highlands is adjacent to the Heather Express chair lift and at Boyne Mountain, near the Helga Haus Children’s Learning Center. The Riglet Parks project is a partnership the resorts entered with Burton Snowboards, the first such effort in Northern Michigan that will create the second and third parks of this kind in the state. The SnowSports Academy at both resorts will offer private and group instruction and a new Burton Store is opened at Boyne Mountain, carrying snowboards, boots and bindings, outerwear, apparel, bags, accessories and youth products. The store is in the Boyne Country

Sports building. Boyne Mountain also expanded its popular Tubing Park, doubling the number of lanes for riders. The Tubing Park will feature at least six downhill lanes and has a tow rope for convenient up-hill access. One-hour, two-hour and full day passes are available. Other new amenities at the resorts include a new spa facility at Boyne Highlands that offers massage, body treatments, facials and seasonal treatments, along with its signature heated bamboo massage. The main lodge at Boyne Highlands also received renovations. Finally, Boyne Mountain’s new fly fishing guide service and shop, Boyne Outfitters, will offer winter trips for steelhead and salmon on the Boyne, Jordan and Sturgeon
rivers. Boyne Highlands is at 600 Highland Drive, Harbor Springs. Call (231) 526-3000 or visit www. boyne.com for more information. Boyne Mountain is at 1 Boyne Mountain Road, Boyne Falls. Call (231) 549-6000 or visit www. boyne.com for more information.

ub’s Nob Ski Area purchased a new groomer and added more snow guns to the hill, efforts to continue producing highquality conditions for skiers and snowboard riders. The new snow grooming machine is manufactured by Pisten Bully, adding to the resort’s fleet. Also, Nub’s expanded its
snow-making system with six new snow guns on the Easy Mile slope. Resort officials also created a new youth attraction on Nub’s Nob South. Panda Land is designed to entertain young skiers with statues of local animals along the trail. The trick is the young ones will learn to turn and stop when they move from statue to statue. Finally, the green, orange, blue and red chair lifts received a fresh coat of paint during the summer and additional lighting also is now installed to sections of Nub’s South and Dorie’s Bowl. Nub’s Nob Ski Area is at 500 Nub’s Nob Road, Harbor Springs. Call (231) 526-2131 or (800) SKI-NUBS, or visit www.nubsnob.com for more information.

Sledding
with horsepower!
Snowmobile trails prepped across Northern Michigan
A
large trail network across Northern Michigan provides ample opportunities to ride snowmobiles through some of the most beautiful places in the region. Local snowmobile clubs and state trail groomers keep conditions ideal when the snow falls, allowing both residents and tourists to zoom through woods and snowy open spaces, riding along trails that meander from town to town. The long-range 2013 winter forecast calls for equal chances of above-, near- or below-normal temperatures and snowfall here in Northern Michigan, meaning it will be a bit of a crapshoot. So, expect the high-powered sledders to be out every chance they get. For those using Petoskey as a starting point, a popular trail is the Chandler Hills loop. This scenic path should take about four hours, heading south to the Sturgeon River and Vanderbilt areas. The loop also connects to trails that go to Wolverine and Indian River. For those who use Charlevoix or East Jordan as a launch spot, there is a trail between the two cities that offers a quick and easy day trip option. Those in East Jordan, though, have easy access to the Jordan River Valley. The valley features pristine and beautiful trails cut through the 18,000-acre state forest, alongside scenic views of the Jordan River and Jordan River National Fish Hatchery. The hatchery offers public restrooms and warming facility. Snowmobile riders based in Harbor Springs have three nearby options. Those new to snowmobile riding may want to try the Alanson to Mackinaw

City trail and back. It’s an old railroad grade that parallels U.S. 31. East of Pleasantview Road is a loop to Alanson and Pellston, with rentals and fuel near the Harbor Springs airport. West of Pleasantview Road is a trail to Larks Lake, including the famed Moose Jaw Junction restaurant. Local snowmobile clubs and associations also accept donations for continued trail grooming expenses. Directly contact the organizations to make a financial contribution.

Your Responsibility Code: Nub’s Nob is committed to promoting slope safety. In addition to those using traditional alpine ski equipment, others on the slopes include snowboarders, telemark skiers or cross-country skiers, skiers with disabilities, skiers with specialized equipment and others. Always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are elements of risk in skiing and snowboarding that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce. Know your ability level and stay within it. Observe Your Responsibility Code listed below left and share with others on the slopes the responsibility for a great snowsports experience.
