A Note from the Author of Guys & Does
Book & Lyrics by Frederick Heide & Lee Becker Music
by Paul Libman
We are all hunters. We hunt for bargains, for jobs, for apartments. But only about 5% of us still hunt deer. That’s pretty amazing when you consider that hunting was once the biggest thing that ever happened to our species. The automobile, the TV, and the computer have all been important for a few decades. But we invented hunting at least 100,000 years ago. We can only imagine the party our ancestors threw for the guys who finally figured out how to pull it off. Think of it: we could now address three of our most basic needs–food, clothing, and shelter–in a single act. It’s understandable that we call early versions of ourselves huntergatherers. Or that the first recorded human creations are cave paintings of hunted animals. Or that our predecessors named constellations after hunters like Orion. Many human pursuits have value–logging, for example–but you won’t find a constellation called Louie the Lumberjack.
These days we don’t need to hunt to eat. Indeed, people would look at you strangely if you said you had to go grocery-hunting. That’s because the word hunting implies that what you’re seeking is hard to obtain. You shop for Cheerios. You can’t shop for deer. They won’t cooperate. And that very challenge is what makes hunting so exquisitely rewarding for those who carry on this ancient practice.
Guys & Does is about guys who value hunting as well as something else that can be hard to obtain: a satisfying connection with family. Eighty percent of Wisconsin hunters do so with family members. And each character in our show is pursuing family in his own way. We hope you’ll enjoy watching them pursue it. After all, there are some things we will always find worth hunting.
