On behalf of the Wisconsin State Park System, I would like to welcome you to Peninsula State Park, Wisconsin’s most complete state park and a favorite camping destination. Peninsula State Park draws over a million visitors annually from all around the country as well as international visitors. With 468 campsites, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, Northern Sky Theater, Peninsula Golf Course, White Cedar Nature Center, Nicolet Beach, 40 miles of biking and hiking trails, spectacular bluffs, and eight miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, you are guaranteed to find a recreational activity that suits you. Don’t forget to check out a breathtaking sunset from the Weborg Point dock or Sven’s Bluff, local favorites.

This year, as Northern Sky Theater embarks on a new season, it will continue to be one of the park’s main attractions, creating family experiences under the stars. We encourage you to share this amazing experience with your friends and family by inviting them to a performance they will never forget. Share our traditions and make new memories at Peninsula State Park with our amazing partner at Northern Sky Theater.

Campers and park visitors can look forward to the world premieres of Hell’s Belgians and The Fisherman’s Daughters, as well as enjoy the remount of Belgians in Heaven. I’m personally excited to see The Fisherman’s Daughters which tells the story of how Peninsula State Park came to be one of Wisconsin’s most prized public lands through the perspective of two sisters back in 1908! I expect you will be amazed at the many natural wonders that are around every corner. As we raise the curtain on the 2024 season, remember to explore, enjoy and be a part of the experience. WELCOME TO NORTHERN SKY THEATER

Welcome to another summer and fall season beneath the northern sky. We have an exciting line-up of six shows in total for you in the park (outdoors) and at the Gould (indoors). For the first time in our history, we have four world premieres in one year to offer you: The Fisherman’s Daughters and Hell’s Belgians in the park; Girls On Sand and Reality Trip in the Gould. We are also bringing back the beloved Belgians in Heaven for its 30th anniversary production and, from 1992, And If Elected.

It’s a remarkable lineup, showcasing our trademark style in creating musicals that reflect Wisconsin culture and settings but also transcend with universal themes of familial discord and love, friendships discovered anew, and the value of recognizing how important it is to cherish these relationships. And to do it all with good humor and song.

We have always been extremely grateful for the chance you take each year on seeing something completely new. This can only happen because you’ve come to expect that what we do will be of interest to you and entertain you, sight unseen. We invite you to join us in our new audience campaign to get even more people hooked on Northern Sky. It’s a way to share the joy and to experience something truly unique right here in Door County.

Thanks for coming and enjoy the show!

Every community is indebted to those who have poured their hopes, dreams, and energy into creating a better life. Whether rooted deeply in the land for many generations, coming from other homelands, or forcibly translocated, all enrich our intertwined world. In alignment with Northern Sky Theater’s mission to promote cultural appreciation, we commit to cultivating an informed artistic environment that honors and respects those who shaped our path and continue to influence our community.

Northern Sky Theater acknowledges that the land we now call Northeastern Wisconsin has been nurtured and revered for centuries by native peoples, including the Omaeqnomenewahkew (Menominee), Bodéwadmiakiwen (Potawatomi), Ojibwa, Ho Chunk, Sauk, Fox, Huron, Odawa, and Oneida nations. We honor their legacy with respect and gratitude.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD

Welcome!

A couple board meetings ago I noticed an income entry on our finance report for “props rental.” Curious, I asked what that was all about. Turns out another theater company is staging our Guys & Does show and rented the three-part knit marriage proposal afghan. First, cool. Second, that got me thinking about our props.

As you may know, “props” is short for properties. Doing a deep dive in-house for a definition, our master propmagician, Lisa Schlenker, explained that a prop is, “anything that’s not a wall, floor, ceiling, or costume.” Ok, so in other words, props are the loose bits that help us tell the story. And that got me thinking about the elaborate and often silly props we have had in our shows.

For those of you returning fans, let me just remind you of the self-propelled “Mmmm, motorboat,” the dancing sails on the Windjammer, the bumblebee puppet choir, and Dirty Bob’s blue soap. And we mustn’t forget Lola the cow who, fun fact, has spent time on Al Johnson’s roof with the goats. Did you know we’ve had props representing Door County’s three major food groups –fish, cherry pie, and cheese (including cheese curds, of course)? Last year’s standout prop for me was the trombone that Ernie brandishes out of his inside coat pocket, though the bedazzled toilet plunger was a close second.

Between seasons, all our props and sets are built and stored in our Jim Caldwell Production Building. Last time I wandered in there I stumbled into a quiver of fishing poles and a barrel of Votes for Women and See Jane Vote signs. Coming out of the production building this season are some new props, but also some old favorites like Mildred the invisible chicken and the invisible fish for the Fish Pack. You’ll see (or not).

Which leaves me to wonder whether it’s possible to rent out an invisible chicken. Not the invisible fish though – they’re too stinky…

Anyway, thank you for coming to our show and please be sure to pay close attention to the “loose bits” brought to you by our incredible props magicians.

Props to you!

JEFF HERBST

Artistic Director / Director / Performer

Jeff has been with Northern Sky since 1991 and became artistic director in 1993. He began his collaboration with the Heritage Ensemble, Northern Sky’s predecessor, in 1985 as part of the Governor Dodge State Park troupe and then migrated north to direct for the Peninsula State Park group in 1988 and 1989. He has worked on over eighty original productions with Northern Sky, including Guys on Ice, Lumberjacks in Love, Belgians in Heaven, and Bone Dance. Jeff was instrumental in developing Northern Sky’s New Works Program and the Fred Alley New Musical Fund, nurturing writing teams in bringing an original work “from the page to the stage.” He was integrally involved with the design of the new Gould Theater and Northern Sky campus. He recently initiated Northern Sky NOVA, a program nurturing original voices and artists. Jeff has an MFA in acting from the Asolo Conservatory and has performed on and off Broadway, as well as at regional theatres throughout the United States. He and Fred Alley were honored in 2017 with the Distinguished Alumni Award from their alma mater, Mt. Horeb High School, for their work in creating original musical theater.

HOLLY FELDMAN

Managing Director

A passionate advocate for Northern Sky’s mission since she first sat on a bench under the stars at the age of eight, Holly was honored to be named as the organization’s managing director in January. Much gratitude goes to her mentors who have helped bring her to this next major milestone. “Deepest thanks to Dave Maier who will remain in a support role at Northern Sky and ranks right up there with my mom as my biggest cheerleader.” She would also like to thank the generous supporters who ensure the future of this special place. Holly brings over two decades of experience in philanthropy and nonprofit leadership to the position. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point’s arts management program, Holly has supported the fundraising success of numerous non-profits across Door County. In addition to her behind-the-scenes contributions, Holly has been seen singing on stage with Zephyr Ciesar, Katie Dahl, Doc Heide, Jeffrey Herbst, Jimmy Kaplan, Eric Lewis, and Karen Mal. DOC HEIDE

Artistic Advisor / Co-Founder / Playwright

Doc (aka “Fred”) has performed in Door County for so many years that he’s virtually a local fixture, like the goats on Al Johnson’s roof or bad cellphone reception. He’s created or co-created almost two dozen musicals including Belgians in Heaven, Hell’s Belgians, Packer Fans from Outer Space (all with Lee Becker & Jimmy Kaplan), Guys & Does (with Lee Becker & Paul Libman), When Pigs Fly! (with Lee Becker), and several shows with Second City founding director Paul Sills. Doc has recorded three albums, is working on a fourth, and recently released a songbook (Tangled in Wonder). An awardwinning teacher and researcher, he is Professor Emeritus at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University and co-teaches with Lee Becker at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He’s published (on topics such as charisma, meditation, and the power of musicals to alter attitudes) in numerous academic journals with formidable titles. Doc is eager to learn how his darling 3-year-old granddaughter reacts to seeing her grandpa on stage in the park for the first time this summer.

BURN THE MORTGAGE BUILD THE BRIDGE

It is with great humility and gratitude that we officially retire our Constellation Campaign donor list. In April of 2024, with the additional support of our Burn the Mortgage –Build the Bridge Campaign, Northern Sky officially paid off the mortgage on our brand-new Gould Theater, Creative Campus, and park improvements. In addition, we were able to launch our own self-managed endowment which is now closing in on $1M. We could not have done this without the steadfast generosity of our donors. These campaigns were always about more than a building, they were about our collective future. Your investment in that future means more music and laughter for generations to come. Thank you.

$2,000

For a limited time, Northern Sky will continue to accept gifts to become a permanent part of this legacy with your name on a seat at the Gould Theater or a bench in the park. Your continued belief in what we do is the key component to everything we do. Reach out to Holly to make your gift: holly@northernskytheater.com

The Musical, and Dad’s Season Tickets. In addition to her Northern Sky family, Neen had an extensive network of colleagues and friends in Madison, where she grew up. NOVA Initiative

What is NOVA? NOVA stands for Nurturing Original Voices and Artists. It is Northern Sky Theater’s next-generation new works development and incubation initiative. The goal of NOVA is to foster, nurture, and expand creative opportunities for alumni, BIPOC, and emerging writers in Northern Sky’s development process.

“The Nova Initiative is a reflection of what Northern Sky has always been,” said Lachrisa Grandberry, Director of NOVA Programming. “In my time working on Sunflowered, I learned so much in the

writing process and could not have done it without the hands-on support of the leadership staff. I am a former teacher, and I enjoy using that knowledge to further this part of Northern Sky’s Mission. I’m excited to pay it forward and be more intimately involved with my theater home. Even more, I’m excited about the infinite possibilities coming as we continue to make space for next generation storytellers.”

NOVA’s principle element is Writing Circle, a six-week program held several times a year for writers to explore their voice, work on new scripts, learn more about Northern Sky, and hone their craft through exercises and peer review. NOVA also hosts single day workshops throughout the year that focus on distinct moments in a writer’s process.

A Note from the Author of The Fisherman’s Daughters

Book, Music & Lyrics by Katie Dahl

When I was a kid, my family and I used to drive at dusk from my grandparents’ house in Sister Bay to Peninsula State Park to go “deer hunting”—looking for deer out the windows of the car. When I was eight, one of these dusk drives brought us to the Northern Sky amphitheater for the first time. Ten years ago, my partner and I celebrated our rehearsal dinner in the park. These days, our eightyear-old son is learning about the park as the big, beautiful backyard of his elementary school.

It wasn’t until I read Edward and Lois Schreiber’s book Fish Creek Voices that I learned the park’s 1909 creation was controversial, especially among the dozens of people who then lived on the proposed park land. I was particularly intrigued by Edward Schreiber’s description of Ella Weborg, who lived “quite spartanly” with her sister Vida in a home built by their Norwegian immigrant father. Ella was a colorful figure, known for walking downtown on windy days wearing a man’s coat and a battered felt hat and asking passing drivers for a ride home. Ella and Vida vehemently opposed the state’s plan to create a park on the land where they lived.

Ella fascinated me. Why did she spend her time walking downtown, only to beg for a ride home? Why did she wear ragged clothes? What did her (less eccentric) sister think about all this? Inspired by these questions, I created two fictional sisters, Sarah and Nora Peterson, and let my imagination run wild.

The Fisherman’s Daughters is the result of that imaginative impulse, and here it is onstage in the very park it’s written about. Those pines you walked through to get to the amphitheater? Same ones I walked through when I was eight. Same ones my son walks through on school outings. Maybe even the same ones Ella Weborg used to walk through in her felt hat.

In the end, The Fisherman’s Daughters is a story about love: of two sisters for one another and for the land they treasure. May we all love this land—and each other—so well.

A Note from the Author of Belgians In Heaven

Book & Lyrics by

Music

One spring morning in 1993, I went jogging in the hills above Berkeley, California, and had an idea for a musical comedy. I’d been wanting to write one for months but was spinning my wheels. My friend Fred Alley, who’d been sleeping on my apartment floor, had listened patiently as I tried to get to the bottom of it. But one morning Fred got irritated with me over a trivial matter. As I took a run to clear my head, a quirky idea hit me: What if Fred and I had been born together repeatedly to learn to be more patient with each other?

At first, I planned to call the show Curmudgeons in Heaven. It would center on two Wisconsin brothers on a farm (played by Fred and me). They’d have a humble handyman deeper than he seemed (Jeff Herbst). My character would be desperately in love, but too shy to pursue the woman of his dreams. And then a near-death experience would reveal to him a larger world.

When I learned Door County had the biggest Belgian population in America, I decided this would be the perfect setting. Soon I was listening to Belgian oral histories at the UWGB Library, interviewing local Belgian farmers, even flying to Belgium with Karen Mal for whom I was writing the role as the brothers’ guardian angel. I asked Jimmy Kaplan to write half the music. Most days, I’d squeeze out half a page. I certainly didn’t expect much to come of it.

Then the show opened. Audiences lined up in electrical storms to buy tickets. Children acted out scenes on picnic tables. A woman with terminal cancer who’d been afraid of death told me that, after seeing it, she could pass on in peace. Fred suggested we do it again the following year, and the year after that. Thousands of patrons came back repeatedly---one person came 20 times. A rewrite with Lee Becker in 2006 made the show stronger. This year will mark its 10th production on this stage.

We’re profoundly grateful so many have taken this show into their hearts. We hope you, too, will find it heavenly.

Music Arranger

In August of 1996, a gawky 13 year old kid had his first otherworldly encounter with Roger, Leo, Angelique and Henry in Peninsula Park. 28 years later, that same kid had the honor of playing a very small part in bringing those wacky Belgians back to the Northern Sky stage. In the intervening years, he also wrote the book, lyrics and music for Doctor! Doctor!, Dad’s Season Tickets, and Whatever Happened to Karl Janko? Matt lives in West Allis with his wife Lori and their irrepressibly cute daughters Kathryn and Charlotte. Thanks to Doc Heide for being such a great friend and collaborator.

In addition to the opening and closing songs in Tongue ’n Cheek, his shows written with Fred Alley include Northern Lights, Lumberjacks in Love, The Bachelors, and Guys on Ice, all directed by Jeff Herbst. James collaborated with Jacinda Duffin and Laurie FlaniganHegge to create Loose Lips Sink Ships. James conceived and created musical arrangements for the Northern Sky revues Beneath the Northern Sky, Goodnight Irene, Harvest Moon, Old Friends, Fish and Whistle, and Sweet Baby James. His music also appeared in Packer Fans from Outer Space, Ya Ya You Betcha, Fool Me Once and the original 1995 Bone Dance. He’d like to thank Kay, DavidSarah and all of the Spoons.

A Note from the Author of Hell’s Belgians

Book & Lyrics

You probably wouldn’t guess from the show’s title, but the central character in Hell’s Belgians is an angel. Her name is Angelique. Although she’s a bit clumsy and struggling with self-esteem, she desperately wants to become the guardian for Roger and Leo, two Belgian-American farmers in southern Door County. It’s hard for an angel to get into the Guardian Corps under ordinary circumstances. But it’s even harder when a wily demon and a fierce fowl named Mildred are determined to stand in her way.

Hell’s Belgians is set a few months prior to Belgians in Heaven. But it took years after the premiere of the original show for it to arrive on stage. Along the way, we discovered why so few popular musicals generate companion pieces: it’s really hard to create a show that’s deeply satisfying to those who love the original, but completely comprehensible to audiences who haven’t seen it. On top of that, it has to be stylistically of a piece with the original, yet explore new territory. Our talented artistic team believes that such a show has finally arrived.

The most frequent question we’ve gotten is from patrons who’ve never seen the original show and wonder which order to see them in. There are advantages either way. If you see Hell’s Belgians first, you’ll watch the events unfold in chronological order. On the other hand, if you see Belgians in Heaven first, you’ll enjoy all the fun “Easter eggs” we’ve planted in the new show to explain things in the original. The easiest answer is probably to find what works best for your schedule.

As we did with Belgians in Heaven, we’ve aimed to make Hell’s Belgians both hilarious and heartfelt, accessible to all ages yet addressing ageless themes. Kindness and forgiveness, even of those who may be difficult to forgive. Hope and redemption, even when we’re at our lowest and feel beyond the reach of grace. And it’s all served up with virtually nonstop humor. We hope you’ll have one H-E-Double Hockey Sticks of a good time!

Our New Fan Campaign is full of incentives to help us with word of mouth. This cruise is the grand-daddy of the prizes! Intrigued?

The New Fan Campaign is a marketing initiative that will incentivize long-time fans and community “influencers” to recruit new, first-time fans to see a show in 2024. Community influencers include business partners, destination info centers, volunteers, camp hosts or anyone who wants to participate.

Incentives range from free popcorn in the park to the chance to join Northern Sky’s Jeffrey Herbst and Katie Dahl on a

Northern Sky Fan Cruise on the Rhine River in 2025. The grand prize cruise is available to folks who not only refer new fans to Northern Sky but who also volunteer in 2024.

The main drive of this campaign is based on referrals. Long-time fans and community influencers who connect with a potential new fan will simply ask the new fan to mention their name when they call for tickets or order online. Every time your name is attached to a ticket sale, you can earn “points” for each new fan.

Learn all about it at northernskytheater. com/new-fan-campaign.

A Note from the Author of Girls On Sand

Book & Lyrics by Lachrisa Grandberry & Molly Rhode

Welcome to Girls On Sand, our newest creation bursting with sunshine, laughter, and the magic of Door County. Can you believe this is Northern Sky’s first beach musical? Crazy, right? Molly and Alissa Rhode and I (three of the creators of Sunflowered) are bringing you a musical comedy that will leave you longing for lazy summer days and sandy shores. We delved into this new writing process to bring you a story truly birthed by the water. Our creative collaboration had a backdrop of moonlit nights on Ephraim beach, water spa outings in the winter months, and even lively discussions on the shores of Loch Ness in Scotland. Each location infused our story with a sense of joy and adventure.

In Girls On Sand, you’ll meet Grace and Zoey, two best friends whose adventures are as wild and unpredictable as the waves crashing on the shore. As they navigate a day filled with unexpected twists and turns, Grace and Zoey discover the true meaning of courage, resilience, and the power of friendship. You’ll also meet Debbie Detector, a beach combing treasure hunter, who will demand your attention and leave you in stitches. Promise.

A special thank you to Fred Alley and Jimmy Kaplan for the unmatched legacy that is Guys on Ice and the inspiration it offered us. And listen, as proud as we are that this is an all-female author team and an all-female cast, don’t be fooled! Girls On Sand is for EVERYBODY. From its inception, we envisioned a show that would resonate with audiences of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Northern Sky or discovering our work for the first time, we know you’ll enjoy the ride this show offers. It’s real and raw, hysterically relatable and brimming with pure joy. I fully expect that after the show, you just might head straight to the beach and run into the waves shouting gratitudes to the universe.

A Note from the Author of Reality Trip

Book & Lyrics by

If I can tear myself away from my phone, I’d like to tell you a story.

When I was growing up, my mom wouldn’t let me leave the house without a dime in my pocket for a payphone. If she needed to find a plumber, she’d let her fingers do the walking through a gigantic tome called the Yellow Pages. Before any road trip, my dad would stop at the Automobile Club to pick up an impossibly difficult-to-fold paper map.

Today, I use my cellphone for practically everything: phone calls, finding plumbers, and navigating my way around Door County. Do I wish to go back to a time before SIRI, Yelp and Google Maps, you ask? No way! The internet has changed my life for the better - and worse. If you’re like me and know the addictive pull of a phone in your pocket, you’ll likely recognize yourself in Reality Trip.

The show is about three friends who plan to unplug and reconnect with each other on a fun-filled vacation in Door County. But going off-the-grid isn’t easy when your B&B comes with free Wi-Fi and a singing, dancing A.I. assistant named Ace.

I like to set my stories in times of change. Oklahoma in Wisconsin took place in the 1950s when movie musicals were first being filmed on location. Love Stings was set in the early 1960s when the ecology movement in America began to grow. Composer Ron Barnett and I have set Reality Trip very firmly in the present, which is also a time of great change. Cell phones and social media have transformed our lives as significantly as the electric lightbulb and indoor plumbing once did. The characters in Reality Trip grapple with the same questions we ask ourselves every day: Do I check my phone too often? Is social media consuming my life? Will A.I. run amok like HAL 9000?

Reality Trip celebrates our humanity, and there’s no better place to do that than in a theater. There’s nothing “virtual” about theater. It’s live. It breathes. I hope Reality Trip will entertain you and inspire meaningful IRL (in real life) conversations with your fellow humans.

Now, back to my phone…

DAVID CARL PETERSON

Nov. 7, 1935 – Oct. 8, 2014

Wisconsin’s Musical Historian and Northern Sky’s “Godfather”

David has been called the Godfather of this theatre because he started his Heritage Ensemble program in Peninsula State Park in the early 1970s. Upon his retirement in the mid ‘90s, he encouraged a couple of resident cast members to pick up the mantle and continue play production in the amphitheater. They did, ultimately changing the name to American Folklore Theatre. In 2015, Northern Sky celebrated the extraordinary life of Dave Peterson. Members of the Heritage Ensemble, AFT, and Northern Sky presented a concert of stories and songs generously hosted by Dave’s wife, Joan, and long-time family friend, Amy Chaffee.

A Note from the Director of And If Elected

Additional Material by Fred Alley & Jeff Herbst

Starting in 1992, we began presenting a (mostly) quadrennial production of And If Elected, by Dave Peterson, with additional material by Fred Alley and me. Often I’ve described this as a romp through presidential campaigns, starting with Washington and heading up to current times, using authentic songs and humor associated with each election. The biggest question I get from people about doing this show now is, “Wow. How are you going to do that?” Of course what they are really asking, I think, is, “How do you navigate the divisiveness plaguing our current political climate?” I think the answer is that we do it together by looking back and understanding how divisiveness has always been present and how we’ve come through it. As a child, I was obsessed with presidential elections and idealized the office. My glasses might not be as rosy today, but I’d still like to believe that the better angels of our nature (to quote Lincoln) reside within us all and can still make the whole better than the sum of the parts of our grand republic. And, perhaps, we can still find some levity to keep us sane and optimistic.

On November 5th please exercise your RIGHT TO VOTE in the Presidential Election. VOTE!

Marketing Director & Events Coordinator

Sophie is thrilled to be joining the Northern Sky family in her first year as the marketing director and events coordinator. Originally from Boulder Creek, California, Sophie spent much of her early life visiting family in Madison, Wisconsin, and becoming used to the change in season and snow. She graduated in 2018 from Ripon College with a degree in theatre and music and moved to the twin cities where she worked for the National Theatre for Children during the day and acted professionally at night. Sophie first came to Door County in 2016 where she saw her first Northern Sky show, thanks to her husband, Jimmy Balistreri, and instantly fell in love with the company, the songs, and the mission. In her spare time, Sophie enjoys camping with her husband, taking walks in state parks, and hanging out with her cat, Tati. She would love to thank her family for all their love and support in getting her to where she is today.

During the 2022 season, she had the exciting opportunity to return to running the scoreboard and she was also the assistant stage manager for the revival of Dad’s Season Tickets. Nina was last seen on stage in a production of Julius Caesar at the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay. She looks forward to singing along to the song Cheese Curds, Booyah and Beer this summer. She hopes that you enjoy the show!

Northern Sky’s One Act of Kindness Society, launched in 2021, celebrates those who have chosen to create a lasting legacy by including Northern Sky in their will, trust, or estate plan. The phrase “one act of kindness” comes from the lyrics of a song in the musical, Boxcar. The song insists that one act of kindness often ripples out into many others by reminding us “there is good in the world.”

BETH YOUNG Ticket Office Staff

After spending 11 years in the hospitality industry in Door County, Beth has been fortunate to experience another vibrant and active part of Door Countytheater. She is happy to return to Northern Sky for her second summer in the ticket office and concessions. The staff and patrons are wonderful and so easy to work with. Beth and her husband are year-rounders, spending their winter downtime with their three grandchildren, Libby, Teddy and Poppy. Have a great summer and enjoy the show!

Our 2023 front of house and ticket office staff: Dale Stafslien (with grandson), Steve Polster, Kathleen Jackson, Beth Young, Scout Feldman, Kent Ingram, Caroline Polster, Isabelle Austgen, Larry Galuszka, Kathy Shanahan, Nina Stoneham, Justin, Becky DeLisle, and Sue Piper (not pictured Kathy Kolacinski, Pat Palmer, and Barb Stafslien)

Northern Sky Theater Donations

Experts tell us that running a professional theater that solely creates and produces original musicals priced so the whole family can attend is impossible. We do it anyway. We exist because of you. Individual and foundation gifts account for thirty percent of Northern Sky’s operating budget. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the contributors listed below. Included in these lists are all the folks who contributed to our Burn the Mortgage – Build the Bridge Campaign in 2023. Donations from April 1, 2023, through March 31, 2024, are acknowledged in this playbill. Northern Sky Theater is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, so your donation is tax deductible.

Northern Sky's Raise the CurtainLight the Sky Committee Wins Golden Heart Award

What a way to celebrate National Volunteer Week! On Wednesday, April 24 our Raise the Curtain - Light the Sky Committee received the Arts & Culture Award at the Door County Volunteer Golden Heart Awards Celebration. The Golden Heart Awards are an annual feel-good event in Door County that recognizes and celebrates Door County’s finest volunteers. We couldn’t agree more - Northern Sky volunteers are truly among the finest.

Recently, as Northern Sky looked ahead to our 2024 Raise the Curtain – Light the Sky season kick-off event, we suddenly realized that our largest fundraiser of the year will celebrate its 20th Anniversary. It is with that in mind that it seemed only fitting that we finally, at long last, nominate the fine folks that make it all possible.

Over the years, many volunteers have come and gone but this year’s 20th Anniversary committee includes Carla Byrnes, Susan Caldwell, Kathy Kolacinski, Heidi Ling, Christine Saldanha, Nancy Schopf, Shelly Stoeger and Dawn Welter. We’d also be remiss not to mention the “silent” committee member, Greg Kolacinski, Kathy’s husband.

While it is our performers who get all the applause, with this nomination for the Golden Heart Award, we honor our committee with the spotlight and a standing ovation! We aren’t sure what we would do without their passion, expertise, and unending enthusiasm.

Volunteers of Northern Sky Theater

Do you love theatre? Do you love the outdoors? Do you enjoy sharing that experience with others? If your answers are “yes!” then we have the perfect opportunity for you!

Northern Sky offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience –ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our disabled guests, as well as assisting with special events. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone.

If this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to help and a desire to be part of something original in Door County. Please call the Northern Sky office at (920) 854-6117 or e-mail volunteer@northernskytheater.com.

OUTDOOR PARK RAIN POLICY

The show will go on if at all possible. Northern Sky staff will wait to decide on cancelling a show until show time, or even a bit after if the weather appears to be passing. If the show is less than half over when called off, you will have the option of either a refund or a rain check ticket, which is good for any future Northern Sky performance without expiration (watch for an email from our office). Otherwise guests will be issued rain check tickets only. If you choose not to attend and the show goes on as scheduled, there are no refunds.

Thank
You!

Dear Audience Member:

When can sitting be good for you and for those around you? When you are sitting in the audience of a live performance!

You read that right. By joining us for a performance you are directly improving your health and the health of our community. As an audience member, not only are you helping generate over $38.6 Million in economic activity in Door County you are helping to combat one of the biggest epidemics in our country – that of social isolation.

A recent study conducted by the Americans for the Arts1 has revealed that 91.7% of respondents agreed that the activity or venue they were attending was “a source of pride for the community” and over 90% of respondents said they would “feel a sense of loss if that activity or venue was no longer available”.

We know you agree. After all, you’re here with us. We hope you will spread the word and share with others (including your legislators and representative) that the arts in Door County play a critical role in both the intrinsic and economic vitality of this place we call home.

To learn more about the importance of the arts in Door County, please visit: www.AmericansForTheArts.org

1 This research study was conducted by the Peninsula Arts and Humanities Alliance (PAHA) in partnership with Americans for the Arts. Questions were developed in consultation with the AEP6 Equity Task Force.
