WELCOME TO PENINSULA STATE PARK

On behalf of the Wisconsin State Park System, I would like to welcome you to Peninsula State Park, one of Wisconsin’s most complete state parks and a favorite camping destination. Peninsula State Park draws over a million visitors annually from all around the world and is one of the many jewels of Door County. With 468 campsites, three group campsites, lighthouse, outdoor theater, golf course, nature center, swimming beach, biking and hiking trails, 150-foot bluffs and eight miles of lake Michigan shoreline, you are sure to find many recreational opportunities. Please be sure to check out an amazing sunset from Weborg Point or Sven’s Bluff, local favorites.

This year, as Northern Sky Theater embarks on a new season, it will continue to be one of the park’s main attractions, creating family experiences under the stars. We encourage you to share this amazing experience with your friends and family by inviting them to a performance they will never forget. Share our traditions and make new memories at Peninsula State Park with our partner Northern Sky.

Campers and park visitors can look forward to a new performance, The Fish Whisperer, as well as enjoying a remount of Cheeseheads! The Musical. Plus a concert show at the end of summer. I expect you will be amazed at the many natural wonders that are around every corner. As we raise the curtain on the 2023 season, remember to explore, enjoy and be a part of the experience. Enjoy the show!

WELCOME TO NORTHERN SKY THEATER

Welcome to another summer and fall season beneath the northern sky. We have an exciting line-up for you both in the park (outdoors) and at the Gould (indoors). Like last year, both venues will be running concurrently. But this year we’ll have two shows playing in repertory in each space during the summer. In the park, you can enjoy the world premiere of The Fish Whisperer running in tandem with one of our classics, Cheeseheads! In the Gould, we have a special treat with two beloved shows sharing the stage: Guys on Ice and Guys & Does. Remarkably, this is the 25th anniversary of Guys on Ice, the little show that’s played all over the country, grown right here at Northern Sky in 1998.

This fall we will extend our outdoor season with a concert offering, like we did last year, and present Lipstick Optional, a revue celebrating the women of Northern Sky Theater. This special concert event will play for three weeks in the park, overlapping the last week with our Gould fall show, When Pigs Fly!

We can’t help but boast a little about how many shows we have now created here at Northern Sky. If you count them up, you’d be north of eighty in the past thirty-three years. We continue to explore ways to tell stories that are of interest to you, that make you laugh, think, and maybe shed a tear or two. This summer, we have over sixteen shows that are on our list to continue work on in preparation for seasons to come. Won’t be long before we’ll be beyond the century mark. Here’s hoping you and the generations of your family to come will continue to find what we do worthwhile.

Thanks for coming and enjoy the show!

Northern Sky Theater acknowledges that the land we now call Door County was nurtured and revered for centuries by native peoples, including the Bodéwadmiakiwen (Potawatomi), Omaeqnomenew-ahkew (Menominee), Ojibwa, Ho Chunk, Sauk, Myaamia (Miami) and Odawa nations. May we honor their legacy with respect.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD

What’s old is new again. At Northern Sky, we take pride in perfecting that art form.

This year we are presenting Guys on Ice, twenty-five years after it premiered at the Ephraim Village Hall in 1998. That year I traveled from California with our three young kids to spend our fall break in Door County with my parents. We all ventured down the steep hill between two steeples to see the new show. It was a warm fall and the year of the great ladybug invasion and the tornado (but that’s a different story). The highlight, of course, was the Snowmobile Suit song. I’ll just say snowmobile suits were on the kids’ Christmas lists…in California.

Twenty-five years on, Bob and I will be in the audience, with my parents and our kids, to once again witness the dance of those epic onomatopoeic zippers. I am sure we haven’t aged a bit and I expect seeing the Guys will feel like the very first time.

From less deep in our canon (2008), Cheeseheads! makes a return as well. And while the themes are universal and the jokes ever giggle-worthy, the show comes with a new twist – the character of the shift lead at Schnaybel’s Famous Cheese isn’t a foreman – she is a woman because, well, of course why not? With some clever updating and a new song, you are in for a real treat. Personally, I feel like we’ve won the lottery.

While The Fish Whisperer is new, it is sure to feel like an old favorite. Like every story Northern Sky tells, this story is one of mystery and magic, harmonies and hope, puns and poignancy, laughter and love. These are the stories we tell. The characters and plots vary, but at the heart of every Northern Sky story, this is what it’s all about. It’s in our DNA.

Whether this is your first time to our stages or you are a fan of many years, whether you are with a loved one or generations of them, welcome and enjoy our new and new old shows. Just think, in twenty-five years you could be sitting here, about to enjoy the twenty-fifth anniversary return of The Fish Whisperer ! Whoa.

JEFF HERBST

Artistic Director / Director / Performer

Jeff has been with Northern Sky since 1991 and became artistic director in 1993. He began his collaboration with the Heritage Ensemble, Northern Sky’s predecessor, in 1985 as part of the Governor Dodge State Park troupe and then migrated north to direct for the Peninsula State Park group in 1988 and 1989. He has worked on over seventy-five original productions with Northern Sky, including Guys on Ice, Lumberjacks in Love, Packer Fans from Outer Space, and Bone Dance. Jeff was instrumental in developing Northern Sky’s New Works Program and the Fred Alley New Musical Fund, nurturing writing teams in bringing an original work “from the page to the stage.” He was integrally involved with the design of the new Gould Theater and Northern Sky campus. He recently initiated Northern Sky NOVA, a nascent program for nurturing up-and-coming talent.

Jeff has an MFA in Acting from the Asolo Conservatory and has performed on and off Broadway, as well as at regional theatres throughout the United States. He and Fred Alley were honored in 2017 with the Distinguished Alumni Award from their alma mater, Mt. Horeb High School, for their work in creating original musical theater.

DAVE MAIER Managing Director

This is Dave’s fourteenth and final year as Northern Sky’s managing director, and sixteenth with the company altogether. He met his muse, Barb, when they attended the UW-Madison Theatre program together. Later, after graduating from the American Conservatory Theater Advanced Training Academy in San Francisco, Dave joined the A.C.T. acting company as an Equity actor, eventually assuming additional roles as a conservatory trainer and stage director. He was also production manager of A.C.T.’s Plays-in-Progress Program, where he helped produce over thirty premiere productions, many of which he either designed or directed. He co-founded and served eight years as Artistic Director for Encore Theatre Company in San Francisco, a critically acclaimed experimental theater company. Dave and Barb were blessed to celebrate the marriage of son Zachary to the amazing Carah Johnston last October and are thrilled about the upcoming marriage of son Weston to the brilliant Victoria Hamilton next June. Dave and Barb have been happy to call Door County home for the past thirty years now.

Associate Artistic Director / Director / Performer

The Fish Whisperer marks Molly’s 30th show with Northern Sky. She’s honored to direct another world premiere for the park stage and thrilled to join a new cast of Cheeseheads! Molly joined Northern Sky as an actor in 2007, directed her first new work in Pen. Park in 2013, and joined the staff as associate artistic director in 2014. Her focus is new play development, and she is honored to work closely with so many extraordinary authors. Molly also works regularly with theaters in Milwaukee and Madison, and she represents Northern Sky on the leadership team of World Premiere Wisconsin. It’s been a thrill to witness the success of this statewide collaboration celebrating new plays and musicals! Wisconsin has a truly special ecosystem. Thank you, Northern Sky patrons, for always believing in new work. We make these shows for you.

in the question, ‘Are you going to come back?’ And when I would respond ‘Yes,’ there was a sense of relief in knowing I was comfortable here.“

Have you heard about Door County Amplify yet? We love it, and we want you to know about it! It’s a social-media endeavor begun by Lachrisa Grandberry and Molly Rhode (both known in the county for their work onstage at Northern Sky, of course). In January of 2021, the pair launched a community Facebook page to celebrate the work of BIPOC artists who work in Door County. BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous and People of Color.

The page’s impact is twofold: It brings more visibility to the diverse artistry found on the peninsula, and it fosters positive relationships between the community and the artists featured on the page.

“People I encounter often wonder what it’s like for me to be a Black artist in Door County,” Grandberry said. “They didn’t directly say it that way my first year. Instead, it was masked

“And I’ll be honest, I was hesitant about coming at first. But I have now completely fallen in love with the beauty and the community of the county. And I love spreading the message that Door County is for everyone.”

During its first year, Door County Amplify created 314 posts, amplifying 101 artists and 18 ensembles affiliated with 22 different Door County institutions. When publishing Amplify posts, Grandberry and Rhode tag the Door County organization, business, or gallery with which each artist is working. This social networking further celebrates community and acknowledges our collective progress.

To follow the page, “like” it on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DoorCountyAmplify . Followers can join in the amplifying by sharing Amplify’s posts and inviting friends to follow the page. If you’d like to help support the page financially, or if you have suggestions for content, please contact Lachrisa and Molly at doorcountyamplify@gmail.com.

Associate Managing Director

A passionate advocate for Northern Sky’s mission since she first sat on a bench under the stars at the age of eight, Holly is honored to be named as the organization’s next managing director. Much gratitude goes to her mentors who have helped bring her to this next major milestone. These mentors include many folks closely associated with Northern Sky: Mark Breseman, Carla Peterson, Mary Seeberg, Cyndy Stiehl, and numerous others. “Deepest thanks goes to Dave Maier who will remain in a support role at Northern Sky and ranks right up there with my mom as my biggest cheerleader.” She would also like to thank the generous supporters who ensure the future of this special place. Holly brings over two decades of experience in philanthropy and nonprofit leadership to the new position. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point’s arts management program, Holly has supported the fundraising success of numerous non-profits across Door County. In addition to her behind-the-scenes contributions, Holly has been seen singing on stage with Katie Dahl, Doc Heide, Jeffrey Herbst, Jimmy Kaplan, Eric Lewis, and Karen Mal. Holly’s husband, Jason Feldman of Jason Feldman Landscapes, and their three grown children, Georgia, Elliott, and Scout have called Door County home for over 20 years.

STEWART DAWSON

Head Carpenter (Lumber Coach)

Lumberjacks cut down trees and lumber mills turn the trees into plywood. Then sometimes I turn the plywood back into trees. Sometimes I cut the wood into smaller pieces and then stick it back together into bigger pieces. This is mostly what I do. I like the old westerns, especially Gunsmoke. I also wrote a book, but since now you have to pay the publisher... Whatever happened to the fat advance? Well, anyway, have a great season and enjoy tonight’s play.

ALEJANDRA FAVILA

Master

Ale is excited to return to Northern Sky for the full summer this year. From Illinois, she has been working closely with independent artists in Chicago, designing lights and running shows for anything from experimental dance to art installations. When not actively doing theatre, Ale enjoys working on other projects, ranging from recreating props and costumes from media, to completely renovating multiple bathrooms. She would like to thank her family for their undying support for her passions.

Lachrisa Grandberry

NOVA Program Director

Over her past five seasons, Lachrisa has been a performer, playwright, and composer. Starting this year, she will add ‘program director’ to her list of roles as she will lead our newly-formed NOVA Initiative.

What is NOVA? NOVA stands for Nurturing Original Voices and Artists. It’s our next-generation new works development and incubation initiative. The goal of NOVA is to foster, nurture, and expand creative opportunities for

alumni, BIPOC, and emerging writers in Northern Sky’s development process. Elements of NOVA include: Writing Circle, explorative writing workshops; The Nesting Place, a writer to writer mentorship program; and Pot of Luck, a writer’s retreat festival. In addition to advancing these elements, Lachrisa will also serve on Northern Sky’s IDEAS Task Force (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access Solutions) and will continue to reach out to old and new fans on our social media networks.

When Lachrisa joined us in the summer of 2018, she didn’t just embrace Northern Sky, she embraced Door County. Lachrisa’s commitment to storytelling here in the peninsula has enriched the creative fabric of our company. We are overjoyed that she’ll be lending her leadership skills to our team as we look to the future.

NEEN ROCK Props Designer & More!

Neen designed and constructed costumes, sets and props for numerous shows starting in the later years of the Heritage Ensemble and continuing through the AFT years. She served as Northern Sky’s production stage manager for their summer and fall seasons since that position was created through 2020. Neen worked at Northern Sky for over thirty years, and her contributions to the company as a designer, stage manager, mentor, and beloved friend were too numerous and far-reaching to write in one paragraph. Her extensive credits designing props for dozens of Northern Sky shows include Loose Lips Sink Ships, Packer Fans from Outer Space, Muskie Love, Victory Farm, The Bachelors, Guys on Ice, Guys & Does, Cheeseheads! The Musical, and Dad’s Season Tickets. In addition to her Northern Sky family, Neen had an extensive network of colleagues and friends in Madison, where she grew up. She worked at many venues there, including Children’s Theater of Madison, Madison Ballet, Madison Opera, and the Overture Center. She was a proud member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, IATSE Local 251, and Actors’ Equity Association. www.northernskytheater.com/neen-rock

Northern Sky worked with Neen’s siblings and Brian to determine the best way to memorialize her. It is our honor to report that Neen’s name will forever grace our Costume Shop at the Gould Theater and will also have a place of honor on our donor wall in the lobby.

A Note from the Author of The Fish Whisperer

From the very beginning, we wanted The Fish Whisperer to work on multiple levels...first and foremost as a fun story, but also as an analogy, and an examination of what happens to us when we believe too much in a lie...or we don’t believe enough in a dream. What’s that balance?

We have imagined a tourist town where the fish have stopped biting, and everyone grows so desperate for a solution that they’re ready to fall for the hokum being offered by a “fish whisperer” who claims to be able to get the fish to bite again...for an exorbitant fee. Is she a scientist with the answer to their prayers, or a conwoman?

Do you remember the TV series Northern Exposure? In every episode there was a scientific explanation for some mythological or unexplainable event. We’re hoping The Fish Whisperer does a similar thing. It’s been a wonderfully challenging puzzle to keep multiple explanations all plausible all the way to the end of the show, and beyond!

The early versions concentrated on telling the story of the con itself. But the visionary artistic staff of Northern Sky and the actors who read and sang the early versions challenged us to deepen the character of the townpeople. Who are they? What’s important to them, and what’s at stake for them personally if the town goes belly-up?

You might notice there are four writers on The Fish Whisperer team. When composer Dan Wessels got snarfed by Hollywood to write for a children’s TV series, versatile collaborator Ron Barnett heroically stepped in to write some new songs and rewrite some of Dan’s. We’re delighted to have him and you along for the “Celtological” adventure which is The Fish Whisperer. What is your inner fish?

DAVE HUDSON Playwright & Lyricist

Dave is a prolific playwright/lyricist with a knack for spinning stories into captivating musicals. He also co-wrote the most produced musical of 2020, The Show Must Go Online. With composer Paul Libman, Dave has crafted gems like Naked Radio, Muskie Love, and No Bones About It (and many others) for Northern Sky. He also wrote Strings Attached with composer Colin Welford. He has also penned over ten delightful children’s musicals for The Actors Garden in Oak Park, IL, including Good Knight, Off to Olympus, and Tut, Tut (with Denver Casado). Dave’s musicals have played around the country and around the world, including the Canadian premiere of Naked Radio this spring. Also an avid cocktail historian and mixologist, Dave has authored three cocktail books, including A Year of Magical Drinking. He also shares his passion for mixology through cocktail education events in the Chicago area.

PAUL LIBMAN Composer

Musical theatre is Paul’s latest stop on a journey that began with playing jazz piano, composing for television and radio commercials, and producing records. After winning the Richard Rodgers Award twice for two different musicals with collaborator Dave Hudson, Paul relocated to New York, where he currently is a member of the Lehman Engel BMI Advanced Musical Theatre Workshop. Now, having had eight successfully produced musicals, he continues to write with Dave Hudson and others. 2022 saw the premiere of Big Shot, a dance production by Broadway choreographer Chase Brock for which Paul composed 19 songs. With lyricist Jack Lechner (The Kid, Off-Broadway) and film writer/director Ron Shelton (Bull Durham, White Men Can’t Jump), he’s composing the score for a new musical based on Blaze, a 1989 movie starring Paul Newman. This summer, Paul is delighted by the return to the Northern Sky stage of Dave’s and his Cheeseheads, as well as Guys & Does, which Paul composed with book and lyrics by Doc Heide and Lee Becker.

Cheeheads! The Musical

A Note from the Author of Cheeseheads! The Musical

I’m going to get a little personal here. At its heart, Cheeseheads is about people being together. In it, a group of coworkers and friends come together every day to do jobs they enjoy because they get to be with each other. Spoiler alert if you haven’t seen the show: something comes along that threatens the factory, and there is a chance the workers will lose this touchstone of their lives—this work-family that means so much to them.

I’ll confess something to you: during the past three years, pretty much all of us in the theatre wondered if the same thing was going to happen to us. Were we going to lose our connection? We watched the news with perhaps more trepidation than your typical worker because our very livelihood centered around the gathering of people. Though we tried, we knew that Zoom Theatre would never be more than a makeshift, temporary solution for what we do.

At its heart, theatre is about people being together. The actors are together on stage. The audience is together in the auditorium (or here, in the beautiful outdoor amphitheater). Together, we are all part of the magical equation of live theatre where the sum of the parts equals more than the separate components. Audience + Actors + Musicians + Theatre Company = MORE. We’ve all been craving that ‘more.’ You have no idea how grateful we are to see audiences returning to complete the equation we solve each night.

Welcome to Cheeseheads! The Musical, and a hearty welcome back to the theatre! After three years, it finally feels like we’re starting to approach ‘normal’ again (or at least the new normal). We’re glad to have you back. More importantly, we are happy to be back with you, gathered together with most restrictions gone. Thank you so much for joining us. Together, we create something amazing that can’t be replicated.

KAREN MAL

Musician & Performer

Karen is a Northern Sky veteran, having originated roles in Lumberjacks in Love, Belgians in Heaven, and more recently Whatever Happened to Karl Janko? She goes back so far in the company that the fall season box office line once rang in her kitchen, in a cottage on Gibraltar Road. Karen is also thrilled to be working as music director with Door Shakespeare this summer. She and her daughter Coralina live in Austin, Texas where Karen works at Austin Scottish Rite Theater as an actor, music director and sound designer. In her last role she appeared in Pippi Longstocking as a flabbergasted proper Swedish lady with crazy hair at a tea party. Karen is also a multi-instrumentalist and award-winning songwriter, and just released a brand-new album of original songs with her musical partner David Stoddard.

Lipstick Optional Dedication

It’s only fitting that we dedicate a concert celebrating the women of Northern Sky to two of the women whose contributions were critical to the theater’s success: Neen Rock and Kaye Christman.

Neen worked with the company and its predecessor, the Heritage Ensemble, from the mid-1980s until her death in 2021. Her creative hands are all over Northern Sky, with her bio still included in this year’s playbill for her design contributions to several shows that she helped originate. These are shows that she also initially stage managed and helped shepherd through the new works process. Neen was all-in at Northern Sky. Her name graces our costume shop as a reminder of how incredibly important she was to us as a colleague and dear friend.

Kaye came on board as our managing director in 1998. She was a yearround presence for the organization and was instrumental in forging a strong relationship with our new board, cementing an extremely positive culture amongst all interested parties. Over the course of her twelve years at the helm, Kaye implemented business practices that helped move us into true professionalism as she guided us through substantial growth, all the while maintaining what drew her to us in the first place: her love of what we were creating. Kaye retired in 2010 and died in 2019, but her star still shines bright in our Northern Sky.

A Note from the Composer of Guys on Ice

Book & Lyrics by Fred Alley Music by

& Researched

Guys on Ice has played to sold-out houses in Beloit, Ephraim, Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay, Madison and Milwaukee, and has played for audiences in at least fifteen states, including California, New York, Oregon, Texas, and West Virginia. The show was originally part of Wisconsin’s Sesquicentennial Celebration in the fall of 1998, and was first produced jointly by American Folklore Theatre and Milwaukee Rep.

At first, Fred planned on writing the book and lyrics with his friend and AFT co-founder, Doc Heide. Doc did some remarkable research, interviewing several of Door County’s leading ice fishermen. Fred and Doc found that their schedules didn’t allow for enough time together, and it was agreed that Fred would write the script, based in part on Doc’s research.

Fred knew that he wanted to write this show for himself and Doug Mancheski. Doug had joined the AFT summer company in 1997, and quickly became Fred’s favorite actor. It’s hard to imagine Guys on Ice without him. Here we are, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the show’s premiere!

Fred wrote the following description of the show for the 1998 program: You’ve seen them. Little wooden shanties sitting on lake ice. Puffs of smoke rising from chimney pipes. On a quiet day, maybe the static of a tinny radio filters through plywood walls, across the frozen tundra, back to shore. In a cold world, on a cold day, on a frozen lake, these little signs of life are all most people know of a secret culture that thrives right here amongst us. Well, wonder no more. Once again, AFT sets its sights close to home as we bring you our somewhat twisted take on the secret world of ice fisherman. Guys on Ice spends a day in the life of Marvin and Lloyd - fishing buddies and home grown philosophers. With musical numbers like The Wishing Hole, Ode to a Snowmobile Suit, Fish Is the Miracle Food and The One That Got Away, Guys on Ice works not only as a serious anthropological study but as a musical comedy as well.

THANK YOU

The authors of Guys & Does sincerely thank the Wisconsin deer hunters who shared their deep knowledge of the sport: Willard, Brian, Bruce, and Sally Zak of Door County, Reed Romens of Pittsville, and Bob and Mark Tuttle of Nekoosa. These individuals, following in the footsteps of countless generations, demonstrate that the tradition of honoring the game that will nourish us remains vital to this day.

Northern Sky Theater 80
Loose Lips Sink Ships 2013

A Note from the Author of Guys & Does

Book & Lyrics by Frederick Heide & Lee Becker Music

We are all hunters. We hunt for bargains, for jobs, for apartments. But only about 5% of us still hunt deer. That’s pretty amazing when you consider that hunting was once the biggest thing that ever happened to our species. The automobile, the TV, and the computer have all been important for a few decades. But we invented hunting at least 100,000 years ago. We can only imagine the party our ancestors threw for the guys who finally figured out how to pull it off. Think of it: we could now address three of our most basic needs–food, clothing, and shelter–in a single act. It’s understandable that we call early versions of ourselves huntergatherers. Or that the first recorded human creations are cave paintings of hunted animals. Or that our predecessors named constellations after hunters like Orion. Many human pursuits have value–logging, for example–but you won’t find a constellation called Louie the Lumberjack.

These days we don’t need to hunt to eat. Indeed, people would look at you strangely if you said you had to go grocery-hunting. That’s because the word hunting implies that what you’re seeking is hard to obtain. You shop for Cheerios. You can’t shop for deer. They won’t cooperate. And that very challenge is what makes hunting so exquisitely rewarding for those who carry on this ancient practice.

Guys & Does is about guys who value hunting as well as something else that can be hard to obtain: a satisfying connection with family. Eighty percent of Wisconsin hunters do so with family members. And each character in our show is pursuing family in his own way. We hope you’ll enjoy watching them pursue it. After all, there are some things we will always find worth hunting.

A Note from the Co-Author of When Pigs Fly!

America is a land of magnitudes. Anyone who’s driven across the Great Plains or peered into the Grand Canyon or leaned against a gigantic Sequoia knows this in their bones.

We are defined by the sheer size of our homeland and the sprawling audacity of our vision and accomplishments. People from every country admire the moon, but only we land spaceships there. For better or worse, America is rarely subtle. Although we sometimes speak softly, we always carry a big stick.

It’s not surprising, then, that bigness also defines our folk humor. We are the land of Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill and the Tall Tale. While the English focus their humor on minimization, we exaggerate. Summers aren’t merely hot around here---they’re so hot that robins must use oven mitts to pull worms from the ground. Our lore is overflowing with this kind of humor that reflects the collective American fascination with size and scale.

When Pigs Fly! presents these hilarious yarns amid a sweet tale of a penniless Door County farm family desperately striving to win a vanilla pie contest for the $50 prize. Although they may be poor economically, the Dumkee family (and their very funny friend Wilbur Schlump) are rich in joy, warmth, and musical ability. They zip through folk songs and original tunes with gorgeous harmony and jaw-dropping instrumental fireworks. Along the way we discover whether they can somehow lift an age-old curse on the farm and whether doing so will require divine intervention.

Much of the material in When Pigs Fly! was originally gathered for a show Fred Alley and I were planning to write. When Fred passed away unexpectedly at age 38, I teamed up with Lee Becker to bring this delightful material to the stage. That show, Bob Dumkee’s Farm, premiered to critical acclaim in Fall 2001 but received only a tiny audience due to opening a few days prior to September 11. We have now substantially revised it to create When Pigs Fly!, which seamlessly interweaves sidesplitting humor, beautiful music, an engaging story, and a relentlessly optimistic outlook. We hope it will set your spirit soaring aloft.

Northern Sky’s One Act of Kindness Society, launched in 2021, celebrates those who have chosen to create a lasting legacy by including Northern Sky in their will, trust, or estate plan. Northern Sky Theater Donations

Experts tell us that running a professional theater that solely creates and produces original musicals priced so the whole family can attend is impossible. We do it anyway. We exist because of you. Individual and foundation gifts account for over 30 percent of Northern Sky’s operating budget. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the contributors listed below. Northern Sky Theater is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, so your donation is tax-deductible. Donations from April 1, 2022, through March 31, 2023, are acknowledged in this playbill.

Thank You to our Generous Donors!

Northern Sky's Tuesday Crew Wins Golden Heart Award

At the Door County Volunteer Golden Heart Awards Celebration on April 19 our Tuesday Crew won in the Arts & Culture category.

Northern Sky’s Tuesday Crew began in 2016 in the weeks leading up to our summer season in Peninsula State Park. Initially the crew would work weekly May through August. Now, 7 years later, the Tuesday Crew can be seen at both the park and our brand-new Gould Theater almost year-round.

“The Crew” is made up of folks who have a wide range of talents and tools at their disposal. And by tools, we’re not being figurative. Tuesday Crew volunteers can often be found lending a rake, a saw, a wood splitter, a leaf blower - the list goes on, and includes energy, sweat, and tireless good cheer. If it’s in a volunteer’s garage, we’ve probably borrowed it. This group of people, mostly retired, with backgrounds from many professions, bring an incredible work ethic and a huge cross section of knowledge and wisdom from business, industry, teaching, the arts, together with wide-ranging life experience and oodles of good old common sense.

The Tuesday Crew is led by our facilities manager, Rich Higdon, but they also work closely with our production manager, Lisa Schlenker, and managing director, Dave Maier. That said, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more self-motivated group of volunteers on the peninsula. Rich often comments that it is a challenge just to keep up with them.

On average 10-12 volunteers show up every week “in season,” May through October. During the off season it’s more like 4-6 people in any given week. The group meets for around 3 hours each Tuesday morning, spring through fall. Many in the group show up before our staff even arrives on site, in part to beat the heat of the day. For those of you doing the math, this means on average the Tuesday Crew has put in about 1,200 hours of time, talent and labor in support of Northern Sky annually over the past 7 years = 8,400 hours of impact on Northern Sky’s bottom line. With the value of volunteer time in WI now estimated at about $30 per hour, this equates to approx. $252,000 in value to Northern Sky Theater since The Crew’s inception. Astounding!

We aren’t quite sure what we would do without the passion, expertise, and unending enthusiasm of our Tuesday Crew. Although it is our performers who get all the applause, with this recognition of the Golden Heart Award, we honor The Tuesday Crew with the spotlight and a standing ovation!

Volunteers of Northern Sky Theater

Do you love theatre? Do you love the outdoors? Do you enjoy sharing that experience with others? If your answers are “yes!” then we have the perfect opportunity for you!

Northern Sky offers many different ways to get involved with the theatre experience –ushering, selling concessions, guiding parking and assisting our disabled guests, as well as assisting with special events. Volunteers can choose what job they would like to do and their hours – no matter what you enjoy doing and when you enjoy doing it, there is a task for everyone.

If this sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you. No experience is necessary – just a willingness to help and a desire to be part of something original in Door County. Please call the Northern Sky office at (920) 854-6117 or e-mail volunteer@northernskytheater.com.

Please join us in thanking our generous sponsors! Northern Sky’s show sponsors help to offset production expenses, allowing us to create new musicals year after year while keeping our ticket prices affordable. Thank you!

OUTDOOR PARK RAIN POLICY

The show will go on if at all possible. Northern Sky staff will wait to decide on cancelling a show until show time, or even a bit after if the weather appears to be passing. If the show is less than half over when called off, you will have the option of either a refund or a rain check ticket, which is good for any future Northern Sky performance without expiration (watch for an email from our office). Otherwise guests will be issued rain check tickets only. If you choose not to attend and the show goes on as scheduled, there are no refunds.

September 23, 2022 marked the 200th anniversary of the 1822 Treaty, which established the land base for Oneida, on what was then the Michigan territory, in Wisconsin. About a year later, some Oneida families from the east began to travel from New York and settle in the newly established territory. To acknowledge this signi cant event, we honor all those who came before us and all those who helped us become what we are today. Furthermore, we recognize the contributions from the Menominee, Ho-Chunk, Stockbridge-Munsee, and Brothertown Nations.
