Old Fenimore Mill Point Approx. 1920 In the late 1800’s, the Northeastern tip of the island was known as Fenimore Mill Point, home of Fenimore Mill Steam Saw and Planing Company. Dr. Dan Andrews owned and operated Standard Manufacturing Company from 1910 to 1950. At that time there were only three fiber factories in the U.S., all in Florida; one in Jacksonville, Sanford and right here in Cedar Key, the manufacturing company for the Donax whisk broom. Agnes Tooke (known about town as “Sister”) was the floor lady of the broom department, responsible for making hat brushes, crumb brushes, automobile brushes and the famous Donax whisk broom. St. Clair Whitman was the supervisor of the machine department. Dr. Dan Andrews was responsible for a large amount of the employment on the island at that time employing over 100 people. Other fibers were sent all over the U.S. to make brooms. Today the same site is home of a collection of newly built luxury condominiums that sit right on the Gulf and offer large balconies with spectacular views available for purchase and daily rentals.
