reflections Sixteen years ago the first Inuit Kayak Building class was held on the North Shore. The group built frames for their boats just like the one pictured on the cover. Instructor Mark Hansen and other founders saw the impact the experience had on the diverse group that gathered to build the traditional Northern boats. The framework for North House was set. In 1997 North House Folk School was founded–a place for building both Northern craft and community.

Storytelling, like the timeless ritual of sharing the northern sagas, seems to be as fundamental to North House as our buildings’ timbered rafters. Even for visitors new to the warmth and charm of campus, the first inquiry bubbles out un-beckoned: “Where did this place come from? How did this all get started?” And so it begins. One story leads to another. Reflections back to our earliest days. Reflections on the value of traditional craft and the life-affirming joy of hands-on learning. And with unfailing certainty, reflections on the many people who have made it possible. Many chapters of the North House story could almost write themselves. A chance encounter with a schooner. Building our first wood-fired oven. A fire that almost destroyed the woodshop. Unfortunate encounters with a semi-truck filled with woodchips. Timbers cut for a new classroom. Other chapters, no less poetic or powerful, lay hidden and wait to be called forth – families in the boat building shop, laughter around the campfire ring, quiet concentration at a sun-washed worktable. The stories unfold. If 2012 confirmed one thing, it is simply this: North House’s mission and educational efforts are thriving. Throughout the year, evidence of this fact was everywhere. Students immersed in projects. Volunteers improving campus. Supporters stepping forward. In September at Unplugged XI, eight community members helped dedicate the Outdoor Commons by cutting a spectacular ribbon made of linked birch bark rings and dyed basswood bark. The names in this annual report only begin to acknowledge all that we have accomplished together, both this year and during the past fifteen. And what will the next chapter be? Discussions with instructors, board, students and staff have yielded a shared vision. Deepen our focus on students and classrooms, instructors and programs. Our Raise The Roof campus building effort has moved us physically forward. Now we can build upon our rich traditions of student-focused learning. A three year Sharpen The Saw initiative will improve classroom resources: lights to lathes, handtools to workbenches. A new instructor retreat, instructor apprenticeship program and outreach efforts will set the stage for future chapters of craft education. The power of hands, the rich fabric of community, the joy of doing, the generosity & determination of people. North House’s journey has been an inspiring tale, and our story has just begun. Materializing on Minnesota’s North Shore, the vision for North House Folk School was of a place dedicated to the teaching of Northern craft. Fringe benefits? A strong community of learners, volunteers and members. And the fulfillment that comes with creating something useful with your own two hands.

The strong community that has grown around North House over the last 15 years is more than Mark Hansen ever imagined. “I wanted to start a school where people could come from all over the place and simply learn about crafts and the good things that result from people having a successful project that they’ve made,” he said. “Today North House has so many of the features that I imagined, and more.” This year is North House’s fifteenth year in existence, although you probably haven’t heard us talking about it much– we’ve been too busy! So far 2012 has seen more students and participants on campus, and more donor support than any of the previous years. Just as Mark Hansen and other North House founders imagined, North House is thriving, and community is building through the stories and skills in creating Northern craft. Many hands have helped along the way, creating new possibilities every year for North House. But just like during our first year, creating is still at our heart. 2000: First North House interns are welcomed onto campus

The first boatbuilding course taught was a precursor to North House Folk School as we know it today. The course was about as quintessentially “Northern” as it gets: Crafting the Greenlandic Inuit Kayak. Twelve people signed up for that first course, and the experience was meaningful. “I had a father come up to me after the kayak class with tears in his eyes,” Mark said. “He said

building kayaks with his son was the most powerful thing that he’d ever done.” In 1997, one year later, two old Forest Service warehouses on the Grand Marais harbor became available. That’s when the idea for a community of Northern craft truly took hold. Offering just 24 courses, North House Folk School was granted a first sixmonth lease to use the land and buildings (owned by the City of Grand Marais). And use them, we have! Thousands of students have filled the red and blue buildings over the last 15 years, and new additions to campus including a teaching kitchen, milling shop and blacksmith shop, have become havens of Northern craft. “To try and find all this information available here you would have to go chasing all over the world,” said Mike Schelmeske, who took classes in the early days of North House, and is now an instructor. “People who come here say there’s just nothing else like it.”

“Instead of sitting behind a computer for the majority of the day, I’m producing something real with my hands, something that will contribute directly to my survival.” - Tyler, timber framing student Tyler and Tara, a young Minnesota couple came to North House with the dream of establishing a country homestead. Using their own hands was integral to their plan, so they signed up for North House’s Build Your Own Timber Frame course to get a start. What followed was not only the production of a timber frame, but also a bit of selfdiscovery.
“I am a computer programmer. I use ‘undo.’ A lot. I literally and frequently think to myself ‘Cmd/ Ctrl-Z’ when I make mistakes in real life,” Tyler wrote on the couple’s blog, www.goingslowly. com. “I think it is fair to say that I am totally overwhelmed by what we are doing right now.” People who take courses at North House have real, tangible experiences. Whether building their own home or learning to carve a wooden spoon, the skills are lasting, useful and real. In 2012 students from 39 states and four countries participated in North House courses. One man came all the way from South Korea specifically to build a wood-fired oven. One family in a basketry course had a true intergenerational experience, with grandpa, mom and daughters all taking part. As for Tyler and Tara, they reported that by the end of their first work day they “were covered in sweat, sawdust, and smiles.” And after nine days the frame for their new home was complete. In the words of our mission, “Inspiring the hands, the heart and the mind.” Inspiring indeed. 2011: First Northern Fibers Retreat on campus

A group consisting of North House board members and staff gathered in October to find answers to the question: Where do we go from here? Much at North House is working right. Many students are having wonderful experiences, and many instructors are successfully sharing their skills. People are visiting campus and public programs are thriving. But the questions stands, as campus gets busier and more people find out about “this little folk school on the shores of Lake Superior,” where do we go from here? “Our community of instructors and learners is indeed something special,” said Lou Pignolet, North House board president. “Today we are poised to continue the growth of this community by placing a priority on improving classrooms, equipment, management of our facilities, and the general infrastructure of North House.” Now that the Outdoor Commons is complete, resources will go toward specifically improving student experience (from improved lighting to tools). 2011: Teaching kitchen in fish house established

In reflecting on the last 15 years, wonderful things are happening here. Even 2012 has been a year of new and expanded possibility. North House wants to keep the momentum going, and is staying focused to move forward thoughtfully and with purpose. Ready for the next 15 years? It is never too early to get started.
