Easter Seals

ou can actually walk right into the empty tomb of Jesus. Amazingly, you can stand in that carved out rock where Jesus conquered death. I know this is true because this past June, Joel and I stood there. That tomb remains unchanged, still as silent and stone cold as the day Jesus got out of there, but once He exited it, the world was changed forever. In unsealing His fate, He gave us the opportunity to seal ours! I’ve heard it said that the stone that sealed the tomb was not miraculously rolled away so Jesus could get out. He could have gotten out any way He wanted. It was rolled away so we could see in and know that He had risen just as He said (Matthew 28:6). I love that! And isn’t that just like God to consider our “need to know” even while He was in the throws of raising Jesus from the dead? I was raised in a Christian home, where Easter meant celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. Easter baskets and egg hunts weren’t off-limits, but neither were they the focus of Easter morning in my childhood home. On that special Sunday, my family was up by 5 a.m., and my two younger brothers and I would put on our Easter finest—I always enjoyed that part of the “ritual” more than they did. Then we would climb in the backseat of our car. Dad would get behind the wheel, and the four of us would wait briefly on my mom, who would eventually land in the passenger seat, nearly breathless from the chaos of getting us all out the door. While Dad drove down the dark back roads to get us to the city park in time for the annual Community Sunrise service, Mom would say things to us kids like, “Jesus died for us—the least we can do is get up early one day a year for Him,” and, “If you two boys don’t behave, I’m going to put Becky between you.” It was still dark and chilly when we arrived at the park. As we walked huddled together from our car toward the top of the biggest hill in town, we could hear Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus”

growing louder. That was because we were closing in on the record player that had the longest extension cord my brothers and I had ever seen. We commented about that cord, to each other, every year. Promptly at 6 a.m. the pastor began to read loudly from the Bible. He read about the death of Jesus and the burial of Jesus in the tomb that Joseph of Arimathea was kind enough to provide. Then he would shut his Bible, and we’d sing hymns, a cappella, while we waited for the sun to light the sky. “Amazing Grace” was sung every Easter. I imagine that was because it was one that almost everyone knew by heart. Before long, the sun conquered the darkness, and the pastor would open his Bible and read from the Gospel of Mark: Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’ ” — Mark 16:2-7 As the pastor closed his Bible, everyone standing on that hill in Greenfield, Indiana would say, “Amen!” And then we’d head home to have breakfast and hunt for our Easter baskets before going to the Sunday morning service at our local church. There’s no doubt that such family traditions enrich our personal journeys of faith. When I grew up and married Joel, the tradition of sunrise Easter services was continued on in the churches where he served as pastor. And when we became parents, attending sunrise service on Easter morning was the norm for our three sons. Participating in those “o’dark thirty” services – whether they were held outside at Sea World overlooking the lake, or inside a sanctuary resounding with the “Hallelujah Chorus” performed by a live orchestra and choir – brought us together and pointed us toward our living Savior and toward a world that hasn’t been the same since He left that tomb in Jerusalem. It’s been nearly 2,000 years since that stone was rolled away to show us death had not defeated Jesus. He is alive today, and He continues to bless the world in myriad ways – not the least of which is through all of us who have chosen to acknowledge the reason for that empty tomb. You don’t have to stand in that silent, stone cold tomb to understand what He did, but I have to admit, it’s overwhelming to stand there and know He got out. And perhaps it’s even more overwhelming to know He got out because He thought you and I were worth it. Let’s live like we believe that, too.

Wynonna, William Paul Young Coming April 24-25 By Marc Mcmurrin Executive Director of Operations

any have asked, “How did you get Wynonna Judd to perform at Northland?” It is an interesting story. Northland strives to bring the best in a variety of genres for our arts series, which allows Northland to reach out to the entire community. Wynonna entered our radar last year when she was featured at GMA (Gospel Music Association), publicly talking about her faith and identifying her strength coming from the Lord throughout her successful career. Wynonna shared her desire to get back to her gospel roots, as she was becoming more of a crossover artist from country to gospel.

Bread Received, Bread Given

ot long before He was to be crucified, Jesus referred to Himself as the “bread that came down from heaven.” He reminded His listeners of God’s supernatural provision of manna during four decades of desert wandering. The chosen people survived only by the gracious hand of God. And believers in Christ, celebrating Easter in 2009 A.D., survive solely on the one sacrifice of the Bread of heaven. Paul writes of the power of Jesus’ crucifixion: “Just as the result of one trespass [the sin of Adam] was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men” (Romans 5:18). Make no mistake; you and I are alive only because of Christ. The Bread from heaven was given, and we have received Him! How do we respond to such a great salvation? One way is to give bread back to people. There are many in our own community, both the chronically poor and the newly displaced poor, who have great physical needs, who need basic daily provisions. You and I can give back and make a difference in their lives. That is what the Mount Dora Love Collection is all about. Each week we bring an extra offering of

It came to our attention that William Paul Young, author of The Shack, had a strong connection with Wynonna last year when he spoke at Northland. Wynonna gave an endorsement on the back cover of his book, saying, “Reading The Shack during a very difficult transition in my life, this story has blown the door wide open to my soul.” Knowing these two were friends and William Paul Young Northland’s good relationship with William Paul Young, we felt we had an opportunity to bring them both the same weekend. Their agents were able to coordinate their busy calendars for a Wynonna performance on April 24 and a William Paul Young speaking engagement on April 25 – a real one-two punch! God truly orchestrated a number of circumstances in order to make this possible. Wynonna, a world-renowned vocalist and entertainer, has been awarded top female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music and has had 13 top 10 hits on the charts. Wynonna has been bringing her amazing voice, her inspirational stories, soul and good ol’ rock ’n’ roll to the masses for 25 years. Wynonna has made a career out of surprising her fans with music that transcends genres and touches the heart. She continues to surprise fans with her latest album, Sing: Chapter 1. If you are not a Wynonna fan yet, you certainly will become one after you hear this incredibly gifted artist live. Northland feels privileged to be the only church performance on her current tour. Wynonna’s management saw this concert at Northland as a welcomed opportunity to combine her music and faith in a performance setting. William Paul Young’s book, The Shack, was intended only as a Christmas gift for Young’s six children and a handful of close friends and initially printed just 15 copies of the book. Two of his close friends encouraged him to have it published and assisted with some editing and rewriting in order to prepare

food in keeping with the Love Collection theme for the month (April’s theme is fresh produce). Your offering is transported by caring volunteers to one of our local ministry partners. We currently support The Carpenter’s House for Children in Leesburg and Loaves and Fishes in Apopka. The “bread” you give will go to fill empty bellies, paving the way for empty spirits to be filled with the Good News of Christ. In Jesus’ earthly ministry, He met physical needs, and that opened the door to discuss the spiritual ones. We can do the same. This Easter season, give a little extra of your resources so the poor of our community can be well fed. Purchase a food item when you do your regular grocery shopping, and then bring it to the Mount Dora worship site on Sundays. The list of requested donations for April is included on this –John 6:51 page. Just as you have received the Bread from heaven, give back the bread of earth as a thank offering to Christ. What a great way to celebrate Resurrection Day!

he emotional experience of the disciples and other followers of Christ from the time of His arrest to His execution and then placement in the tomb must have been incredible. The pain, the fear, the loss, the confusion and the despair must have been overwhelming and crushing. What do we do now? Where do we go? What happened? We see a glimpse of the confusion and terror when Peter, who a short while earlier was proclaiming that he would “go both to prison and to death” for Christ, was now scrambling to deny any association with Christ at all, even to a servant girl. This rapid transformation is tragic and yet understandable if we are honest with ourselves. With grace and mercy, we can see our own frail faith and humanity in Peter, who was forced to confront his circumstances and their real implications on his safety and well-being now that his security, Christ, had been taken. Loss is a powerful change agent. Many of us have surrounding circumstances that seem too much to bear. We, too, are encircled by loss, of life, relationships, finances, employment, friends, power, security, safety, status and more. The result is often similar: We abandon our faith in the unseen, in those intangible core truths and

hopes that seem to be so far away from our present situation. We begin to trade them in for false assumptions, wavering realities and artificial predictions based on impending worstcase scenarios. As we do this, our responses become, as Peter displays for us, survival-based, self-preserving and protective. Herein lies one of the great errors I want to point out. We are called by Christ to die, as He did. There is no recipe for self-preservation here, no safety, no protection, only death! Complete death of self and flesh is the only pathway to the eternal life He offers. Let that sit on your heart and mind heavy for a moment. Is that what you signed up for? Did you think this was the end game of your Christian life? Are you aware of the destination of this path? See, Peter’s reaction, like our own, is false in its intention. Jesus calls us to pick up our cross and follow Him, to lay down our lives, leave everything behind, lose it all, to die (Matthew 10:39; 16:24)! There does not seem to be an option here. It is more of an imperative, a declaration about this new reality. Peter and the apostles tell us that we are to expect suffering in the name of Christ, but they also –John 11:25-26 (NASB) proclaim it as “a great joy to be counted worthy to do so” (Acts 5:41). They all died pretty rough deaths that included much suffering, but that somehow brought them greater joy? How did this change happen? Why were they so willing? Why did Christ tell them and us that? How is this the message of hope that changed the world forever? What are we missing? Please go and read all four Gospel accounts of the climax of this story (Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; and John 20, 21). Read them aloud to yourself or anyone you can. Listen to the words. Let them settle on your ears and your heart! Here is why: He is risen! What was lost was found; what was gone was returned; what was destroyed was rebuilt; what was killed was resurrected! The whole problem and dilemma of theirs and our existence changed! Peter’s fear and confusion had been met with something greater than he could comprehend. Everything was different now. It was there all along. Christ preached one

A Beautiful Picture

Are there opportunities in your life when you can make a sacrifice for someone else that makes you more like the Person of Christ? Ask God to open your eyes to the needs of those around you, then be obedient when you see how you can help. The sacrifice Christ made for you on the cross came out of His love for you. If Christ said to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, and Christ showed us how, do you think God will use you in your neighbor’s life if you are willing to make a sacrifice? Remember, Easter is not the story of the end of Christ’s life, but the beginning of a new life in Him. The phrase “He is risen” means Christ is alive and at work in each one of you, if you invite Him in (Revelation 3:20). So how will you allow Christ to work in you? What sacrifices will you make because of Christ in you? Think of a person or situation that God has put in your heart, and begin to do whatever it is God’s leading you to do. If you need help finding a place to serve, our Fusion project is next weekend, April 18. Are you prepared to make a sacrifice if there is a need? There will be many opportunities to serve with others who are following Christ in our community, as more than 10 churches are involved. Go to the Serve Table to find out how to register and be a part of a team. Projects include construction, caring for and pampering young mothers at the Accept Pregnancy Center, feeding the homeless, prayer teams, car care, and even caring for children as their parents are serving. Because of so many opportunities, this would be a great weekend for everyone to plug in and serve. What a beautiful picture of the church being the church! Happy Easter to each one of you!

Was it the kids sleeping soundly, or the sun coming up over the rooftops, or the early morning dew on the ground? Or was it the picture of the risen Christ alive in your thoughts? After experiencing all that Holy Week had to offer, Easter morning is the reality of the ultimate sacrifice that gives you power to live for Him every day of your life. “Sacrifice” is a word we use quite a bit, yet sometimes we say “sacrifice” when what we really mean is “offering.” Can you think of the last time you had to make a sacrifice? For some of you, it was this morning because of the situation you are in today. For others, sacrifice is a foreign concept. message the entire time He was here; it was one of the first things He spoke when He began His ministry (Matthew 4:17) and one of the last things He proclaimed when He ascended into heaven: “The kingdom of God is at hand!” In Acts 1, we see the description of Jesus’ last interactions with the disciples, the fuel for their fire. He tells them about the POWER that was coming, the Holy Spirit, and how by that power they were to go everywhere, as His witnesses, proclaiming this Good News that “the kingdom of God had arrived,” in Him. In Him, death was defeated, eternal life initiated. That sent them to the ends of the earth and, ultimately, to their deaths. They soon had tongues of fire fall on them, miraculous works performed by them and supernatural experiences happen to them. None of that was the focus, though. It was always Christ: crucified, resurrected and ascended! The same is true for us. All that surrounds us, all that consumes us, all that we focus on is nothing, good or bad, great or common, is rubbish, is trash, is crud (Philippians 3:8). “For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). There is nothing that can compare to the eternal life in Christ, temporarily lived out here, regardless of circumstances, status or suffering. This is all but a vapor, here today, gone tomorrow (James 4:14). Eternity is not. He is not. The answer is not to try and change our circumstances, to pour all our time, money and resources into our effecting our situation. Want to fix your marriage, enjoy your work, be a better parent, live a more fulfilling life, or manage your finances well? Know Him! How do you do that? Study His Word, get in community and love more. The best part is we are supposed to do this together, reminding one another of His truth when it seems so far away. We need each other. The body of Christ is called to edify each other in the Word of God, spur one another on in love and good deeds, build each other up in the faith … and all the more as the day approaches. Paul sums it up this way in Philippians 4:11-12: “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Project Homeless Connect Provides Relief to Many BY SARAH MATTINGLY Northland Executive Assistant Service

ore than 300 clients. Nearly 230 volunteers. More than 40 providers. That’s what it took to make this year’s Project Homeless Connect an amazing and wonderful event! In the early morning, people started to line up outside, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to find relief from the practical and much-needed resources that were being offered on the other side of the doors to those in need. As the sun rose, The Rink was abuzz! Representatives from various organizations, agencies and ministries were busy setting up their tables and booths. Volunteers in red shirts were stationed at their various posts. There was a line outside the doors. We were ready to go! As clients filed into the fellowship hall, they were greeted with breakfast and hot coffee. Then each person met with one of our intake volunteers, who took down critical information and then got them connected to a “shepherd.” The shepherds were volunteers who became their “friends” for the event, showing them around the building, helping them navigate through all of the services so they could have their most pressing needs met. Government agencies and many local ministries were there to assist the homeless in meeting their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Services offered included IDs, birth certificates, Social Security cards, legal aid, medical triage, vision

Local Service Projects Upcoming Serving Opportunities

screening, vaccinations, information on pregnancy care, behavioral health, substance abuse assistance, clothing vouchers, long-distance phone calls, veterans assistance and more. Once they finished with those services, they headed down the hall to pick up a backpack and fill it with a plethora of donated items, including clothes, blankets, pillows and, most importantly, Bibles. After collecting all of the goodies, they made their way to the playground area for lunch. The weather was beautiful, and the clients and their shepherds enjoyed the time of fellowship, sitting out under the trees, partaking of a meal together. For an event that seems like it could be intimidating and humiliating, that was not at all the case. God was present from the moment people walked on site. People were smiling and encouraged. Walls between the homeless and others were broken down, and we all came together as one. We are grateful to Homeless Services Network of Central Florida for allowing us to host this event. Thanks be to God!

will attend and finally get his required ID. During Project Homeless Connect, I was constantly comparing his life to mine. I could easily obtain a new driver’s license or Social Security card by driving to the office, handing over the required fees, then walking out with my ID. He had neither the transportation nor the money. I remember when I had to get new cards after I got married and was annoyed at the time and effort that it took. For him, the effort would have been nothing compared to the relief of having a real ID. I was humbled as I thought about it. As we enjoyed our lunches, I ate at my normal, rather slow speed when I noticed that he had gobbled up twice as much food and was finished. When I sat with my husband for dinner that night, I wondered where and what my new friend was eating. He certainly was not at The Olive Garden like we were, savoring the delicious food. Later that evening, I snuggled beneath a soft blanket on clean sheets and speculated on where he was sleeping. I knew that he had gotten a blanket, sheets and a pillow, but were they on a bed in a safe environment? Did he have a roof over his head? He told me he was living in south Orlando, but did not share where that was. He had spent a couple of nights at The Coalition for the Homeless and the Orlando Rescue Mission, but was no longer there. Week 7

Lesson Objective: • To cause participants to reflect on what they have gained through the exercise of discipline during this study. • To challenge participants to consider the importance of submission and obedience in their lives.

Optional Icebreaker: (5 minutes) When you were growing up, who cleaned the bathrooms in your house? Who took out the trash? Was there a hierarchy when it came to chores? How about in your home now?

Transition: This week’s focus is on submission and obedience. Submission involves other Christlike traits, like humility and honesty. Jesus Christ is our supreme example of submission. Though He was God incarnate, He was the ultimate model of humility. Of course, He is also the perfect example of obedience.

Interactive Learning: First let’s define our terms: • Submission is being willing to do God’s will. • Obedience is actually doing it. Richard Foster outlines several important areas of submission. Here are three of them: 1. Submission to the Trinity: Thomas à Kempis’ morning prayer summarizes this perfectly: “As thou wilt; what thou wilt; when thou wilt.” 2. Submission to Scripture: In order to submit to Scripture, we first have to engage with it in a personal way. 3. Submission to family: …in honor, preferring one another. How does each of these affect the other?

Bible Application: Divide your group into three teams. Assign one of the following passages to each group. Ask them to summarize their verses in their own words. When you bring the groups back together, have them share with the group. Then discuss the questions below.

1. Philippians 2:1-11 – submission to God How would you define submission to God? What makes submission to God’s will harder than it looks? What makes it desirable or attractive? 2. Psalm 119:9-16 – submission to Scripture What is the tone of this passage? How does the writer feel about God and His goodness? What are the most common roadblocks to submission to Scripture? 3. Ephesians 5:21-25; 6:2; Romans 12:10 – submission to family How does mutual submission work in a family? How do the attitudes described in these passages affect family dynamics? How do these passages allow or not allow for various perspectives on the roles of husbands and wives? Once we know God’s will, and are willing to do it, what things can hinder obedience to it? In a family setting, what are the distinctions between submission and obedience? What are the boundaries on submission in a fallen world?

Challenge: Give group members the opportunity to share what they have learned or experienced during this Lenten study. If you served together as a group, give group members time to share what they learned from that opportunity. Challenge group members to look for ways that God will teach them about submission and obedience in the coming week — in their personal lives, in their families, in their jobs, in their churches, etc.

Closing: Close with prayer, asking God to continue to keep discipline a priority in the life of each group member. Jesus, You are our shining example of submission, as You were obedient to the Father’s will, even to death. Teach us the meaning of obedience. Remove our weakness and shape us. Take our will and form it into Your own as You guide us in the path of righteousness. Amen.

Joel C. Hunter Scholarship Award Offered

he Joel C. Hunter Scholarship, in an amount up to $5,000, was created in 1998 to honor Dr. Hunter’s teaching and leadership. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those training in the arts, theology or any other discipline that could be dedicated to ministry consistent with the distributed church model. LifeHope LifeHope is a benevolence ministry that serves people in need in our church family and community for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God and Christian community through worship, equipping and service. It is the privilege of our ministers to love, listen, pray with and serve you during your first visit. They will help assess your priority needs and eligibility to be considered for assistance. Our LifeHope staff will then guide you toward your next steps. This may require an additional visit. Our strongest desire is to empower and equip you to live the life God has for you. Access Ministries While meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities has always been important to our church, we are working on expanding the programs and services offered. These efforts are being led by Laura Lee Wright, Northland’s Access Ministries team leader (407-937-0549 or lauralee.wright@ northlandchurch.net). We can best accommodate your needs if you arrive early for service. Details: Congregational Services (407-949-4000 or congregational.services@ northlandchurch.net) Special Needs/Cry Room: It is located at the west end of the main foyer in room 4128. Parking: The front parking lot is reserved for those with special needs. Special Needs Seating: People with wheelchairs, walkers or other special needs have designated seating areas throughout the sanctuary if needed. Lyrics for Visually Impaired: Printed lyrics are located at the Welcome Center. Sunday School: Classes for children through fifth grade with special needs is on Sundays at 11 a.m. Buddy Breaks: With Nathaniel’s Hope, we offer respite for parents of kids with special needs. Assistance for Those With Hearing Loss: Signed worship service is Sundays, 9 a.m. Sound amplification aids are available at the Welcome Center.
