VOLUME 10, ISSUE 20

The Redemption is not only for mankind, it is for the universe, for the material earth; everything that sin and the devil have touched and marred has been completely redeemed by Jesus Christ. There is a day coming when the redemption will be actually manifested, when there will be ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ with a new humanity upon it. – Oswald Chambers NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Challenges to Christianity | If God Is Good, Why Is There Suffering? | Job 23:8-10

ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

.............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Global Media Outreach Reaches the World for Jesus You Can Play a Part in Growing God’s Kingdom By Dr. dan lacich Pastor

I

news@mountdora

f you listen to some reports and voices, you could easily get the impression that Christianity is losing ground all over the world and that other faiths will overtake it soon. The doom and gloom crowd then begins to project out into the future and predict the end of Christianity. If, however, you listen to the folks at Global Media Outreach (GMO), you will quickly develop the conviction that people are coming to faith in Christ so quickly that there is a waiting list of people needing follow-up. Four years ago, a small group of people connected to Campus Crusade for Christ put together an Internet ministry that was designed to present the Gospel to as many people as possible. As a result, they developed a network of more than two dozen sites geared toward evangelism and discipleship. The sites are in multiple languages, which cover more than 85 percent of the world’s Internet users. These websites provide people an opportunity to indicate a decision to follow Jesus and to give complete contact information so someone can follow up with them for discipleship. Since that beginning four years ago, the number of people who have come to faith in Christ has doubled every eight to ten months. Right now between 5,000 and 6,000 people a day are giving their lives to Jesus and supplying complete contact information. That means that this year alone, nearly 2 million people around the world are saying yes to Jesus through the ministry of GMO and asking for someone to contact them and help them take their first steps of growth. The people who are coming to Christ are from perhaps every country around the world, including countries that are violently opposed to the Gospel.

People who have no chance of talking to someone about Jesus are finding Jesus on the Internet. Reading just a few of the responses will begin to give you a picture of the scope and impact of this ministry: “I love my Lord, and I hope He accepts me. Jesus Christ, I need You. I wish I can escape from my world and drop the 50 years I lived like a Muslim. I need You, Jesus. I pray to receive Jesus for the first time.” — Elderly man in Afghanistan “Thanks for everything you have done. I was going to commit suicide, but this helped.” — Young woman from Latin America “I am Buddhist, but in my life, I only got help from Christian people, and now I prayed to Christ.” — Simul from Spain “Thanks for the website. My family and I said the prayer together tonight.” — Thomas from Indiana “I tasted the miracle of Jesus Christ, and I want to accept Him as my Savior.” — Resident of India There are millions more testimonies like that. God used the technology of the first century, Roman roads and letters on papyrus, in order to spread the Gospel. Now He is using the virtual roads of the Internet highway and the bytes of information on a computer screen to introduce people to Jesus. The problem is, people are coming to faith in Jesus so quickly that there is a growing backlog for follow-up. In fact, there are so many people coming to Christ from Spanishspeaking countries that GMO has had to scale back the access to the Spanish-speaking sites. “Imagine someone comes knocking on your door because they want you to tell them how to give their life to Jesus. But you have had so many people do that and you are so

desperately trying to follow up with those people, that you can’t even answer the door for the new person,” Allan Beeber from GMO explains. That is how effective this ministry is, but it also indicates how serious the need is for follow-up. Because the need is so great, and because this fits precisely with our desire to help people connect with an existing church or start simple churches wherever they are, Northland has entered into a partnership with GMO. We want to help contact and connect with those 5,000 to 6,000 people who come to faith each day. In order to do that, we need people to serve as a volunteer online missionary. As an online missionary, you would have the privilege of helping a new believer grow in Christ and do it from the comfort of your own home via e-mail. You might find yourself exchanging e-mails with a person from India, or Africa, or China, or even Pittsburgh! The e-mails would be in your own language, whether that is English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic or Pittsburghese. You’d get to determine how many or how few people you want to follow up with, and even the days that you will get notice of a new person to contact. You would be provided with all the resources and training that you need right from your computer at your own pace. If you want to contact one person or 20 a week, it is up to you. As Northland develops more and more materials that help people be the church right where they are, those will be added into the discipleship materials provided by GMO. Eventually, we plan to expand the scope of follow-up by including some of our partner churches around the world so they can contact people with fewer language and cultural barriers. What do we need from you? We need hundreds of people to come to one of two orientation/informational meetings with the folks from GMO. The meeting will last an hour and be held in the Rink. You can come on either Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m., or Saturday, June 6 at 9 a.m. At that meeting, you will learn all you need in order to get started as an online missionary. We need people who can speak any language. There is a special need for Spanish speakers, but even if you only speak English, we need you.

Living a Missional Life, Part 3 Local Short-term Mission Trips JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister

W

e are so blessed here at Northland because we have such an incredible short-term missions department, called Distributed Journeys. This team works tirelessly to provide incredible opportunities to each of you to serve in the Kingdom of God all around the nation and the world! From New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to Sri Lanka, there are trips of all lengths, costs, commitments, needs and times. They mostly occur in the summer months, but go on all year long. Check out the Northland website for more information (www.northlandchurch.net/main/journey/). This summer we have a small group from Oviedo going to Swaziland, South Africa, to work with our long-term partner, Vredulust Church, capitalizing on relationships built by Oviedo’s own Pastor Dan Lacich and two congregants – Marianne Testa and Kathy Franz – who went last summer and are going back this summer! This is such an incredible example of the power of community, telling each other about the invitation we have all received from God to be “on mission” with Him. First, Pastor Dan went, then he invited Kathy and Marianne, then Kathy told her small group all about it and shared the work of God, and now nine people in that group are going together this year, and Marianne has become a leader for our church there! Wow, the power of the Holy Spirit through willingness and participation! We also have our own Student Ministries coordinator, Erica Emler, going with a team of students to Jamaica with a Northland partner mission organization called IsleGo. When asked why they are going, and what’s been the hardest part of stepping out in faith, here are some of their answers:

“God provided all the opportunities, options and motivation, while removing all the obstacles. [The biggest stretch will be] giving over all the control and trusting that God will honor the trip and use us to accomplish His will.” — Ron Cox “Dan Lacich came to our small group and asked us if we would consider going to Swaziland. After hearing Kathy Franz speak about her journey, we knew we had to find a way to go. Raising support and finding child care has already been answered by God. It is amazing to watch Him at work.” — Jen Cox “Tim is the leader of our home, and he felt the call to go to Africa, and after a lot of prayer, God has calmed my mind about going, and I know I feel Tim and I are being called to go. [The biggest stretch]: asking for the money and time off from work and the fear of the unknown, getting out of my comfort zone.” — Susie Brown Please stop by the table in the foyer to learn more about how you can partner with these teams in prayer and in preparations for the work to be done before they go, once they arrive and after they leave. You can “be a part of it” with them in many different ways! I am reminded of the verses that I used in my sermon: Acts 1:8 and Matthew 28:10. They both talk about the work to be done being here, there and everywhere, now and always, and that He has the power to accomplish what He has started, but also that He has invited us to participate in it with Him! What an honor! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Answer: If GOD is GOOD, WHY is there EVIL?

A Good Man Was Tested Job 1:6-12 One day angels and Satan came to the Lord. The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered, “From traveling all around the earth. I’ve been going from one end of it to the other.” Then the Lord asked Satan, “Have you thought about My servant Job? There isn’t anyone on earth like him. He is honest. He does what is right. He respects Me and avoids evil.” Satan said, “You always give Job everything he needs. That’s why he respects You. But reach out Your hand and strike down everything he has. Then I’m sure he will speak evil things against You. In fact, he’ll do it right in front of You.” The Lord said to Satan, “All right. I am handing everything he has over to you. But do not touch the man himself.”

Draw a picture of the angels and Satan talking to the Lord about Job.

Manage Your Finances God’s Way By CONNIE RAINWATER Director of Content Development

id you know there are more than 2,350 verses in the Bible about money? Did you know that nearly half of Jesus’ parables are about possessions? The Bible is full of wise counsel about our financial decisions. In fact, Jesus had more to say about money than about heaven and hell combined. Crown Financial Ministries has a 30-year history of equipping people worldwide to learn, apply and teach God’s financial principles so they may know Christ more intimately, be free to serve Him, and help fund the Great Commission. A seven-week, video-based Crown Financial small group study will be offered on Sundays, June 7 through July 26, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at

Northland at Longwood, room 4209. Led by Bob Shoemaker, this course teaches biblical financial management and practical tools and resources to help you manage your finances God’s way. Bob Shoemaker has been a member of Northland since 1991. He was a financial planner for 17 years and has been the area director for Crown Financial Ministries for the last nine years. The cost for materials is $16, and these can be purchased at the class: Managing Our Finances God’s Way DVD, workbook and savings package. his week Dr. Hunter begins a new preaching series, “Challenges to Christianity — Brief Answers to Common Questions.” For many people, the circumstances of life often pose challenges to faith. But God doesn’t back down from a challenge. He is not intimidated by our doubts and fears. He will use them as the very things that bring us to a clearer knowledge and understanding of Him. Below are some resources available in the Northland Bookstore that address many of the struggles with faith we experience:

Faith & Doubt, by John Ortberg Ortberg demonstrates how doubt is very much a part of faith and how uncertainty can lead to trust. “The beliefs that really matter,” he writes, “are the ones that guide our behavior.”

Disappointment With God: Three Questions No One Asks Aloud, by Philip Yancey Is God listening? Can He be trusted? In this book, Yancey tackles the questions caused by a God who doesn’t always do what we think He’s supposed to do.

Romans Study Great Learning Opportunity

I

f you are looking for a learning opportunity this year, the perfect counterpart to Pastor Joel C. Hunter’s applied apologetics series is the Romans study. The book of Romans is perhaps the most concise theological work in the New Testament. Theology is the study of God’s story. It is through His story that we come to know Him and can worship Him for who He says He is and what He says He has done. Offered by Pastor Dan Lacich on Sunday mornings at 9 a.m. in room 4213 at Northland at Longwood, this course will run through July 5. Pastor Lacich came to Christ before his senior year in high school through the ministry of Young Life and the love of some close friends. Growing up without a church background, he developed a passion for people who do not know Christ, and a desire to help believers reach out. At Northland, he serves as pastor of distributed sites, helping the distributed church worship and serve together. Pastor Lacich has a bachelor’s degree in theology from Franciscan University, a Master of Divinity from Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry, and a Doctor of Ministry from Reformed Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Barbara, have been married since 1979 and have three boys: Zachariah, J.T. and Garrett.

When Bad Things Happen: God Is Big Enough to Handle Your Questions and Strong Enough to Deliver You From Pain and Doubt, by Kay Arthur Bible teacher and author Kay Arthur guides readers to discover the answers revealed in the Old Testament book of Habakkuk, so that they can know God, understand Him and love Him more fully, no matter what happens.

When God Weeps, by Joni Eareckson Tada and Steven Estes After more than 30 years in a wheelchair, Tada has a special understanding of God’s intentions for believers in their pains. In When God Weeps, she and Estes hold this peerless perspective out as a gift to readers. With firmness and compassion, they reveal a God big enough to understand suffering, wise enough to allow it, and powerful enough to use it for a good greater than anyone can ever imagine.

Dr. Dan Lacich, Northland’s pastor for distributed sites, leads the Romans class.

Dear Fellow Northlanders ...

......................................................................................................................... I hope this letter finds you well. I want you to know just how much we appreciate your faithfulness in bringing your tithes and offerings to Northland. This act of worship is making a tremendous difference here in Central Florida and around the globe. While God is giving the church many opportunities to help others in need during America’s financial crisis, Northland is facing a financial challenge of its own. Specifically, we need your help with the monthly mortgage payment for our new facilities. Because you are invested at Northland personally and financially, we want you to know that the elders of the church are encouraging the congregation to fast and pray every Thursday for the next 12 weeks. The focus of this time will be our spiritual growth, the church’s finances and the needs of our congregation, as well as the ministry happening around us. For many years, the governing elders have met at 6 a.m. every Thursday for a time of prayer. For the next 12 weeks, this is being expanded to an all staff prayer time at noon, followed by a congregational prayer time from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Longwood sanctuary. We hope that you will join us as we come together before God’s throne to thank Him for what He has done and commit to Him the needs of the church and His people.

Tithes and offerings are anticipated to meet the day-to-day needs of the church, but giving toward the new facilities in Longwood has dropped significantly. As a result, we are reaching deep into our ministry reserve to cover the monthly payments, which will eventually affect our core ministry activity. God has blessed us with a wonderful facility that provides the tools we need to minister to tens of thousands of people every month. Our mortgage payment is $178,533 per month, but we are currently receiving $126,616 per month. Wondering how you can possibly help in a tangible way? We are asking congregants to add one percent of their income to their current giving, and add it to the building fund. This will allow us to catch up on our deficit and maintain our mortgage payments. Thank you, for giving this your prayerful consideration. If every Northland family or individual will pray for God’s help and simply add one, together, we can meet this challenge as we continue ministering to those around us … everywhere, every day. In Christ,

Marc McMurrin Executive Director of Operations

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

Worship focus:

Challenges to Christianity: Brief Answers to Common Questions If God Is Good, Why Is There Evil? Scripture focus:

.....................................................................

Worship Christ today as our Redeemer. In His goodness, He redeems our lives, our hearts and our situations from evil.

Job 1:6-12 (nasb)

.....................................................................................................................................................

Summary prayer:

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. The LORD said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.” Then Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” Then the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD.

Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
