ABOUT Northland ..............................................................................

a welcome to first-time visitors .............................................................................................................................................................

Our Vision To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you. You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

Our Mission To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done. “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

Northland’s in the House By ROBERT ANDRESCIK Director of Print and Public Relations

L

ast Sunday, a handful of volunteers – including yours truly – brought the church into a new “room” with the launch of a new site at Orlando’s Ronald McDonald House (RMH). None of us knew quite what to expect when we walked into that meeting room. There were nine of us total – including one toddler and his baby brother. In the weeks leading up to the service, fliers were

posted, personal invitations were made, and prayers were offered … asking God to draw people unto Himself. We booted up the SlingCatcher – a little black box that connects RMH to Northland … and then we waited. As the service began, we had exactly zero residents joining us. We worshiped and waited some more. A few minutes into the service, just as Pastor Vernon was welcoming first-time visitors, a young family walked into the room. After the service, we spent much time talking and praying together. God is good! Volunteers are still needed both to serve as hosts and to serve meals to residents. For information, contact me (robert.andrescik@northlandchurch. net or 407-949-7147).

Church? There’s an App for That

N

ow, people can use the iPhone to go to a place where cell phones typically aren’t allowed: to church! On July 4, Northland launched an iPhone Web app – offering up live services as they are happening via streaming video. Thousands have already tried the new App. “Love it – in seat 9E on the Tarmac worshiping with ya,” Twittered one man waiting for his flight to depart.

Also, with the ability to easily connect the iPhone to an external display such as a TV, people can use the iPhone to start home churches, especially in countries where advanced cell networks are outpacing broadband. “We continually hear stories of people who start to worship online and eventually find a community to worship with others, or start one of their own,” says Nathan Clark, Northland’s director of digital innovation. ‘Acts’ of Worship Bill Chapman Northland at Mount Dora Site Minister

O

n the third Wednesday of each month, the Mount Dora congregation gathers for food, fun, worship and prayer. We call it Gathering 242. The concept comes straight from Scripture in Acts 2:42: “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (NIV). Who are “they” mentioned? The first Christians, that’s who!

Three thousand brand new believers in Christ, connected to each other by the Holy Spirit, gathered often to eat, to share, to pray and to learn the Word of God. That’s what Gathering 242 is all about. We start with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. and then worship in the sanctuary at 7. Our worship band consists of youths and adults, and we typically have Bible teaching, testimonies and prayers offered for one another. It’s a time for all of the Mount Adorables, from the youngest to the most seasoned in life, to grow in relationship with one another. If you are looking for a way to get connected at the Mount Dora site, Gathering 242 is a great place to start. Our next event is coming on Wednesday, August 19. Why not join us? We’ll see you there! >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

wenty burrrrs, 37 eeeeeeeks, 537 ha, ha, haaas, 99 ooo, ahhs, two lost sunglasses, six giant subs, one Frisbee, 262 miles, three SUVs full of people, one snake = the most awesome Wednesday, July 22 ever! We (20 of us, mostly teenagers) loaded the cars at West Oaks at 9:30 in the morning. (Remember, that’s mostly teenagers … that’s early in the a.m. Crazy!) After 131 miles, we got our tubes and headed out through the woods for our summer adventure. One of the leaders (he’s tall, has four daughters, and we see him up front on Sundays a lot) suggested we leave all important belongings (including flipflops) behind in the cars (remember this fact for later). Of course, we all obeyed our trusted leader. Well, the trip through the woods was very interesting … barefoot! And carrying rather large tubes! The mile walk only increased our anticipation of what was to come – a jump into a 73-degree natural spring. That might not sound cold, but trust us, it was! Did we mention that our wise leader threatened that anyone still standing on the dock would be launched into the water mysteriously by some “force” beyond our control? (He did it, too!) Once all of us were floating down the river, we looked around, and it was beautiful and quiet (a new vocabulary word for us!). Well, the quiet lasted for at least … five seconds. For the next two hours, we laughed, shrieked

(remember the “one snake”?), paddled, swam, jumped off trees, splashed, eeeeeked (the underwater grass was slimy), tipped over, laughed some more, snorkeled (we had clear tubes – good idea!), relaxed (all of us for at least two minutes), talked, screamed, played Frisbee, laughed even more, and forgot about the rest of the world. Being a teenager might seem easy, but it’s really not. There’s lots of pressure to be what everyone else thinks you should be. Anyway, we were sad to see the end of the tube ride. But that’s when our stomachs reminded us that they were there and wanted to be filled. We had a feast back at the picnic tables near the beginning of the tube run. Subs, chips, sodas and Oreos! Isn’t that your idea of a feast? With full bellies and dry clothes, we headed back to West Oaks, knowing we had an awesome Wednesday in the summer of 2009. I don’t think we mentioned that we all know each other better now and want to hang out again. We didn’t even know some of the people when we met in the morning, and then eight hours later, we felt like friends with everyone. We go to different schools, live in different areas, look different, have different interests and goals, and have different family situations. But days like this help us realize that it’s really good to have friends that encourage us to be who God made us to be, friends who accept us just like we are (we were in bathing suits), friends who know how to have fun without “added items,” friends who are … friends! We hope that more teenagers from West Oaks (and any other place) will hang out with us next time. It will be soon, and we’ll let you know when so you can tell any teenagers you know to come and see what true friendship can be like. P.S. The wise leader and his wife lost their sunglasses, but none of us did! >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Team Helps Global Primary School in Swaziland by Courtney Walmer

F

our years ago, I was a member of a group of high school and college students on Northland’s first Distributed Journey to Siteki, Swaziland. This summer we traveled to the same primary school, Global Primary School, to work with orphans and vulnerable children. Just four years ago, I remember the overwhelming picture: beautiful children with bloated tummies and orange-tinted hair, who were prone to fatigue. This summer the picture is in the process of changing. God is busy redeeming. Complexions were brighter and laughs, fuller. Noticeably fewer children had skin diseases, and teachers said the kids were focusing much better in classes. There is still an extreme level of poverty, though. Swaziland still has the highest infection rate of HIV/AIDS in the world. Children are still devastated by easily curable skin diseases. But there is also significant change. Amid the disease and poverty, you can see in the children’s eyes a growing sense of dignity and hope. Four years ago, there were only two buildings at the school, one of which was infested with rats and snakes. Today there are four brick classrooms,

New brick classrooms.

a farm-sized garden, bathrooms with showers, and a fence around the property. Global Primary School began because of the obedience of a Swazi pastor, Pastor Cleopas, and his wife, Barbra. Instead of children left with no choice but to linger around dirt roads of the rural village of Siteki because they have been orphaned or because they are too poor to afford school, God has used Global Primary School as a place to provide for these children. The school remains open 365 days a year because the meals at the school are often the only meals the students receive. The school has continued to grow while maintaining the vision on which it was founded: to offer hope to very vulnerable young people. It is a place filled with potential, hope and continuous growth. This summer Northland sent three teams to Swaziland, all of which partner with Vredelust, a church from South Africa. Together we served in many different ways – working in a garden, doing construction, teaching morning devotions, playing sports and visiting children’s families to pray for

them. Through each avenue of service, God’s name was hallowed: Children were loved, teachers were encouraged, and relationships were built and strengthened.

Fill a Backpack for a Child in Need

Leave It Behind Your Car August 8-10 The love of Christ was felt by everyone.

Planting Seeds One of my favorite projects at the school was the garden. It had been taking shape over the past two years. Last year I was so pleased to see it growing and learn that the cooks were able to use the vegetables in the students’ mealy pop, producing much more nutritious lunches. Unfortunately, upon our return this summer, the field where the garden had existed was bare. A drought had destroyed it. This summer we helped finish tilling an even larger plot of land than had been previously set aside for the garden. In fact, the land is much too big to continue referring to it as a garden; more precisely, it is a farm. It was such a sweet time for our team to work alongside the children and their teachers to prepare the land for planting. Even a drought isn’t a problem for the land any longer. We watched as a proper well now irrigates the farm. God provides. The school is always growing, so construction is an ongoing activity. Our team helped to arrange fencing around the entire farm area. By fencing, I don’t mean a white picket fence, but large, heavy concrete poles put in place to keep out animals that might do damage to the crops. Sweet Victory Although I can think of so many examples of how God’s character was revealed more to me during my time in Swaziland, there is one memory that, for at least a moment, allows me to grasp just how wide and deep our Father’s love is for us. Last year, with a combined effort from the community, we were able to put on a soccer tournament, which brought teams together from four area schools. This year we had an even bigger turnout. Six teams participated in the tournament, school spirit was high, and the Siteki community was brought together in a way that only soccer makes possible. There were about one thousand people in attendance, including our American team, South Africans, Swazi players, teachers, members of the student body, a couple from the Peace Corps, a man selling oranges, and women representing UNICEF to talk about AIDS. One of my greatest memories will always be the seconds that took place after Global Primary School scored its first goal during one of the games. I turned from watching our players, fitted in new uniforms and generously donated cleats, rejoicing to see all the Global Primary School kids belting, as loud as they could, one of their many songs. The victory of that shot by Jabulo was felt not only by the soccer players, but by each student, teacher and participant on our Distributed Journey. There is something so profound about the character of God when you consider that He cares even about our dignity. These young men, these soccer players, are being used by their Father to lead their classmates and inspire them. To see the students cheering so energetically with so much life was a beautiful gift. They are all living in desperately trying situations. Many of them are orphaned. Disease stares them in the face. Yet, in that one moment, I saw there were a couple of hundred children of God rejoicing with their angelic voices. The school is expecting to be certified by this December, which would add much credibility to the work being done on behalf of these children. Please pray for the logistics to be worked out so that the school, the children, and the community benefiting from it may continue to be blessed.

t’s that time of year when kids gear up to head back to school. Do you know what kind of impact you will be making with your backpack donation? More than 1,000 children are homeless in Seminole County alone, not to mention the families that are struggling financially to gather clothes and the necessary items for their children to be prepared for learning this year. Consider filling a backpack and delivering it to your site of worship the weekend of August 8. At the Longwood site, leave the backpack behind your car, and it will be picked up. At the distributed sites, drop off your backpack donations at the information tables. Do you need some ideas on what to get? Here are great items to put inside the backpack: * 12-inch ruler (plastic or wood) * Scissors * Crayons * Standard glue sticks (0.2- to 0.3-ounce) * Standard eraser * Pack of No. 2 pencils * Pocket folders * Wide-ruled filler paper * Subject, 150-page spiral notebook * Pencil sharpener * Washable markers * Colored pencils * 8- to 10-pack medium ballpoint pens

Do you or anyone you know have a child in need of a backpack?

Answer: I AM THE WAY.

The Only Way John 14:1-6 Jesus has made a way for us to be close with God. Jesus is the only way. Jesus told His disciples, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me. In My Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me, that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

his weekend, five upcoming opportunities are being presented for learning to live a generous life. Booths are set up in the lobby so congregants can explore several options to help meet their individual and specific needs. While the booths will be set up at the Longwood site, each site will have a representative present to give information about all these opportunities. The financial opportunities to be represented are detailed below.

leadership, finance, human resources, marketing and more. Each week’s study includes Scripture memory related to that week’s topic, solid scriptural teaching and thought-provoking case studies. CROWN FINANCIAL MINISTRIES – MANAGING YOUR FINANCES Many Christians have been taught what the Bible says about how to handle 10 percent of their income, their tithe. Although this is crucial, we need to understand God’s perspective on managing the other 90 percent. Look for the “MANAGING YOUR FINANCES” booth to get more information. Several fall classes are planned; come to the orientation for details. • Orientation for Crown class participants is Tuesday, August 11, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Northland at Longwood fellowship hall. • Crown leadership training is set for Wednesday, August 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 4204. MONEY MAP COACHES – ONE-TO-ONE COACHING In today’s economy, we all have areas where we could use a little coaching, especially when it comes to finances. If you want someone to help you with an in-depth evaluation of your income, spending, debt, saving and giving, you can meet with a Money Map Coach. Crown’s trained volunteer Money Map Coaches will work with couples or individuals, helping to develop a personal spending plan, apply biblical principles of stewardship, build a plan to get out of debt, and achieve spiritual and financial freedom. Look for the “ONE-TO-ONE COACHING” booth and get connected with a counselor. You also can stay anonymous and receive counseling by going online (www.crownmoneymap. org), or call Crown (800-722-1976) and ask for a coach. TRUE NORTH FOUNDATION – LEAVING A LEGACY Have you made financial or custodial arrangements for your loved ones, should they outlive you? I know it is not something we like to think about, which is evident considering seven out of 10 people in the United States die without a will. The estates that go through probate total more than $100 billion, and the figure increases every year. Northland is providing a free Simple Will to congregants through the True North Foundation.

Foundations for a Godly Marriage re you looking for a way to strengthen or repair your marriage, grow spiritually together with your spouse, and build relationships with other Christian couples? Foundations for a Godly Marriage, part one of the Building a Godly Marriage course, will help you do all that and more. This 14-week Bible study will teach you to put God first, centering your marriage on Him. Many couples have already experienced transformation in their lives together as a result. Here are a few of their stories:

Northland recently established The True North Foundation to fund special ministry projects outside the walls of Northland that support the broader distributed church. Look for the “LEAVING A LEGACY” booth and get connected with your next steps. Details: Rick Crandall (cranbarney@cfl.rr.com)

“This class helped me to understand our relationship in regards to what God wants us to know, and my role as a godly man and loving husband. The best thing about this study was the time I spent in God’s Word and the change I felt as He moved me.” —Rick “I am very surprised how this program has impacted our marriage. We have done marital counseling, tons of self-help, but without God, it didn’t seem to help. This course has made the biggest impact on our marriage, beyond what I expected.” —Kathy

This course is recommended for all married couples. Each week the study begins with an introductory teaching, followed by discussion between couples in similar stages of life. Join them and get the support, prayer and encouragement you need to make your marriage strong. This class will meet on Tuesdays, August 25 through November 24, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Children’s Worship Wing. This session is limited to the first 35 couples to register. The registration deadline is Tuesday, August 18. There is a $15 charge per couple for workbooks, available in the Northland Bookstore. Child care is available by reservation. Details and registration: 407-949-4000, ext. 1761, or buildingagodly marriage@gmail.com.

“This really helped both my husband and I start to reconnect and understand what God intended marriage to be. It changed my way of thinking about my role as a wife. I have already recommended this class to friends.” —Ellen “It helped me a lot with things that I thought I could do by myself. I have gained a lot in my marriage since I started coming here, and I feel like there is a family here for me.” —David “My husband and I needed the guidance as to where to find this stuff in the Bible. We now feel we can help others with their marriage.” —Larissa The class takes place in the Children's Worship Wing.

Art Proceeds to Support Mission BY PASTOR VERNON RAINWATER

“I

create because that is what I was created to do,” says Marissa Voytenko, artist and Northland attender. Missions and the visual arts are two very important topics to Marissa, who has a passion for sharing Christ and her experience of Him through her art. Marissa’s medium of choice is encaustic – a blend of beeswax and damar resin. “The beeswax has this incredible luminous quality that is more difficult to capture in acrylics or oils. I enjoy working with encaustic because it has an ethereal feel and adds a bit of mystery to the work.” This fall, Marissa and her husband, Vitaliy Voytenko, will move to L’viv, Ukraine, as missionaries with Mission to the World. Once in Ukraine, one of Marissa’s responsibilities will be to continue painting with the goal of leading people to Christ. “L’viv is known for its arts and culture. I am thrilled about the opportunity to be a part of the rich artistic community in L’viv and to be a light in that context.” Marissa’s artwork will be on exhibit and available for purchase in Northland’s Hospitality Suite at the Longwood site. All proceeds from the sale of the artwork are applied toward Marissa and Vitaliy’s missions support account. To purchase artwork, send your inquiries to veridianleaves@gmail.com. For images of Marissa’s artwork, visit her website (www. marissavoytenko.com).

GOVERNING ELDERS

Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor

Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. Notes:

From Dr. Hunter's message last week

Earmarks of heresy:

• Deifies man – teaches that man may become God, or is part God. • Humanizes God – teaches that God’s nature or state of being must be understood and reasonable to be true. • Minimizes or eliminates sin – the devastating condition and consequence of sin is not taught, or is denied. • Minimizes the importance of the Bible – most organized heresies (cults) use “anointed” information, books, magazines or Scriptures that are believed to be just as important as, or more important than, the Bible. • Teaches a different way of salvation – teaches a “grace plus works” salvation, that people possess at least some ability to earn eternal life, and grace is perfected through their works. • Has a different Jesus – denies the deity of Jesus Christ, teaching that Jesus is something less, such as a created being, an angel, a prophet, an ascended master or just “a god” (secondary). • Has a different Spirit – teaches that the Holy Spirit is not God, but an impersonal force or energy that emanates from God to perform certain functions. • Claims to be the only true church – believes that it is the only group or church ordained by God, and believes God directs only its organization and that He does so through a leader, who has all the say over the group.

God of all truth, we give thanks for your faithful utterance of reality. In your truthfulness, you have called the world ‘very good.’ In your truthfulness, you have promised, ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love.’ In your truthfulness, you have assured, ‘This is my beloved Son.’ In your truthfulness, you have voiced, ‘Fear not, I am with you.’ In your truthfulness, you have guaranteed that ‘Nothing shall separate us from your love in Jesus Christ.’ It is your truthfulness that we love. And yet, we live in a world phoney down deep in which we participate at a slant. Ours is a seduced world, where we call evil good and good evil, where we put darkness for light and light for darkness, where we call bitter sweet and sweet bitter (Isa. 5:20), where we call war peace and peace war, so that we rarely see the truth of the matter. Give us courage to depart the pretend world of euphemism, to call things by their right name, to use things for their right use, to love our neighbor as you love us. Overwhelm our fearful need to distort, that we may fall back into your truth-telling about us, that we may be tellers of truth and practitioners of truth. We pray in the name of the One whom you have filled with ‘grace and truth.’ Amen. “Ours Is a Seduced World,” Walter Brueggemann: On reading Jeremiah 23 / October 29, 2001

NEXT WEEKEND: Dr. Joel C. Hunter | Personal Hurdles | “I don’t believe in Christ because of Christians!” (The hurdle of hypocrisy) | Matthew 23:13, 7:5
