ABOUT NORTHLAND ..............................................................................

A............................................................................................................................................................ WELCOME TO FIRST-TIME VISITORS

OUR VISION To see people coming to Christ and growing in Him as we link local and global communities for ministry and worship everywhere, every day.

At Northland, we always open our worship services by saying, “Thank you for bringing the church into these rooms!” Why? Because Northland is a church distributed, gathering in Longwood, Mount Dora, Oviedo and West Oaks, and at more than 1,000 sites worldwide via the Web. In other words, it isn’t the physical structure or the many programs that make up the church ... it’s people like you! You are the church. And it’s our goal to help you to be the church ... everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION To call people to know and follow Christ and equip them to worship and serve together.

Thank you for joining us today to worship God for who He is and what He has done! “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:2, NIV).

OUR CORE VALUES Worship, Spiritual Formation, Personal generational Leadership and Partnership.

Please pick up a visitor card from one of the ushers or at the Welcome Center so that we can learn more about you and help you to connect to the many classes, groups and opportunities to serve with others. Ministry,

PRACTICE THE STORY BY CONNIE RAINWATER Director of Content Development

“Lent, as we will experience together soon, designs to interrupt the comfortable patterns of life that so easily lull us to sleep. However, one of the great challenges of Lent is its very longevity in the tradition of the Church. In some ways, the tradition designed to interrupt the pattern has become the pattern that needs to be interrupted. Lent is a fire alarm, a wake-up call, a closer brush with the death that leads to life. The secret lies in the way we approach the season. Don’t approach it as an interesting tradition, a spiritual exercise or worse — a contest, a rote givingup-chocolate thing every year. That’s the pattern. We are looking for a way of practice that narrates us into the Story of stories. Beyond the notion of spiritual disciplines, we are searching for what we like to call ‘story immersion practices.’ Story immersion practices are those curious ways and means that re-orient our own stories inside of the grand story of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” — J.D. Walt

J

oin us as we practice the story this Lenten season in a study by J.D. Walt, dean of the Chapel at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. Immerse yourself in the story by joining him for a preview on Wednesday, February 18 at 7 p.m. in the Northland at Longwood sanctuary, and hear from Rev. Walt himself how to practice the Story. The personal Lenten reader, In Me, In You, will begin on Ash Wednesday, February 25. This study, which is a daily reader and additional components, will be available on Northland’s website, www.northlandchurch. net. If you prefer to have a personal copy of the reader, they will be available in the Northland bookstore at a small cost. There will be an intergenerational service that will provide additional opportunities for breaking the patterns of our lives, each Wednesday from February 18 through April 8 at 7 p.m. at Northland at Longwood. We are grateful to Rev. Walt for his great contribution to Northland and to the body of Christ. Rev. Walt and his wife, Tiffani, also an Asbury Theological Seminary graduate and ordained deacon in the UMC, have four children: John David III, Mary Kathryn, Lily and Samuel. Rev. Walt joined the Asbury Theological Seminary administration in fall 2000. Prior to this, he was a teaching and preaching pastor at The Woodlands United Methodist Church in Houston. Rev. Walt serves as the vice president for Community Life and the dean of the Chapel, giving broad leadership to the

CHRIST AFTER DIVORCE

I

n Malachi, we find these sobering words: “ ‘For I hate divorce,’ says the LORD, the God of Israel” (2:16a). Why does God hate divorce? He hates it because marriage was intended to be God’s visible metaphor for His relationship to His people. Throughout Scripture, He is portrayed as the “bridegroom,” and His people as the “bride.” When this most sacred of relationships ends, the

Rev. John David Walt, vice president of Community Life, Asbury Theological Seminary

Lord laments its passing. He hurts for those who are left shattered in its wake. Jesus offers forgiveness, healing and growth to the divorced person to restore his or her life, purpose and peace. If you have experienced the pain of divorce, Northland’s divorce care ministry can help. DivorceCare is a worldrenowned healing ministry designed to help you through the breakup of marriage and the challenges that come with it. DivorceCare seminars are led by people who understand what you are going through and who want to help. You’ll gain access to valuable DivorceCare resources to help you deal with the pain of the past and look forward to rebuilding your life. A DivorceCare class is beginning soon at the Mount Dora site. Come and be a part of a caring community of believers who have walked the painful path of divorce and will walk with you through yours. The Lord loves you and will breathe life back into your journey. Come and be a part of the healing and restoration that Jesus wants to give you. >>> MOUNTDORA.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

areas of worship, prayer and spiritual formation on campus as well as ministries to spouses, families and international student constituencies. As part of Rev. Walt’s work at Asbury, he is giving direction to Seminarius, a creative and innovative project funded by the Lily Foundation, designed to connect students with the full range of prayer and spiritual formation resources available through the Seminary community and beyond. In addition to his experience at The Woodlands, Rev. Walt served as the minister of students at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas, from 1992 to 1994. As a licensed attorney, during that same time period, he was an associate at the law firm of Burke and Eldridge in Fayetteville. He also served brief tours as an associate with Wright, Lindsey & Jennings Law Firm in Little Rock, Arkansas, and as a legislative aid for U.S. Sen. David Pryor. Rev. Walt is an ordained elder in the Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.

DO YOU RE-MEMBER?

M

any of us have completed the incredible Belong study, and those of us who are already members of Northland are being challenged to “re-member” what it means to, as we say in Oviedo, “be a part of it.” One of the purposes behind this is to publicly and verbally declare to God and one another that we are together as a united body of Christ. For those not already members, in the near future, an opportunity will be given at each site when you can, upon completion of the Belong study, sit down with a minister or elder and discuss what membership means. After this discussion, you, too, will be invited to join the body of Christ at Northland. I cannot encourage you enough in this process of joining the church. Many of us have lost the sense of belonging to anything in our transient, constantly changing, ever-evolving and fast-paced environment. There is a temporal, or physical, element of making a commitment to others that causes us to behave differently. For example, a young boy who has been a fan of a school sports

team grows up and is able to go out for the team and make it. Immediately, a deeper level of joy, suffering, commitment and connection occurs for the boy toward the team, for the team toward the boy, and even for those around the boy (i.e., family, friends and neighbors) toward the boy and the team. All become more involved, dedicated and participatory in each other’s lives and passions. You hear coaches remark about the family relationship of their teams. In the Super Bowl, you could hear the pride of Ben Roethlisberger when he bragged on the offensive line’s incredible performance, despite a few key mistakes. He was lifting them up and sharing the joy in a way we cannot; we are not on the team. Yet, I am sure his family, friends and neighbors, even people that used to live in that area (like Pastor Dan Lacich and Elder Fred Franz), are still drawn to their team in some supernatural way, faithfulness to those to whom they feel they belong. There is a second realm effected by this sense of belonging, the supernatural. The enemy employs a good tactic by encouraging us to go through life alone, even the Christian life. It is a deceptive method to persuade the believer to go through the motions of belonging to a church body but never actually committing to it. We feel like we kind of belong, are somewhat connected, but then ever so softly the enemy whispers in our ears that we are not really a part of anything, that we are all alone. Genesis 4:7 says, “Sin is crouching at the door, desiring to have you,” and all over Proverbs and the Psalms, the imagery of a lion is used for the wicked or evil that are waiting to pounce on you, to devour you when you are alone. Belonging is an incredibly valuable part of the spiritual warfare that we are all engaged in, consciously or unconsciously. This reality does not depend upon our acceptance of it; it is going on all around us, all the time. Paul tells us in Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Belong to Christ. Belong to Northland.

One of my favorite verses is 2 Kings 6:17. Elisha prays that his servant’s eyes would be opened to the reality surrounding him. “ ‘Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ And the LORD opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” We are not alone! We are meant for relationships. God Himself is a relationship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When we make a declaration of our belonging to Christ and thus the body of Christ, we tell the enemy what side we are on, the side Christ has called us to and perfected in us. We remind ourselves and those on “the team” that we are with them, and they are with us, and together we can impact the world around us, by the power of the One who is in us, Jesus Christ! Make the physical, temporal commitment of the spiritual reality. Belong to Christ! Belong to Northland! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

ARE YOU IN CRAZY LOVE WITH GOD?

A

s I think about the significance of this weekend, from committing yourself to Christ and to the body of Northland, to finishing up the Belong study, it is no coincidence it was planned for Valentine’s Day weekend. Valentine’s Day is the day we show and tell others how much we love them. Some of us have a hard time responding to someone who shows us this kind of love. In our group that has been meeting on Tuesday evenings, we have talked at length about our God, who loves us so much that He would become like one of us, die for us, and now desire a response from us. How do you respond to a God that is crazy in love with you? I ask this because I know many of you who want more out of your life than just showing up and going through the motions as a Christian. You want to be authentic in your relationship with Christ. I recently read a book by Francis Chan, a pastor of a church in Simi Valley, California (where my family lived while I was in seminary), called Crazy Love, and his message is very clear. God has compassion for the lost, the last, the littlest and the least, and if we were to have this same

passion, the world would never be the same. And the truth is this: When we love God as Luke 10:27 (our memory verse for week 3 of the Belong study) calls us to, with all of our heart, soul, strength and mind, we will have compassion for the lost, last, littlest and least. And when we love like this, it will look like some kind of crazy love that will be hard for people to wrap their arms around. A quote from Crazy Love: “Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts — it is falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, you will never be the same. Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.” As we celebrate this day together, standing with one another, committing ourselves to Christ and to each other, our communities we place ourselves in will see Christ in ways they have never seen Him before. The Belong study has brought us to the place of realizing we are made in the image of God and we do have the privilege of reflecting Him to those we see every day. As we understand more and more about what it means to follow Christ, we also take on more responsibility of making Him known. I am always humbled when I see how God uses each one of us to reveal a part of Him to those around us. We are the body of Christ, and as we come together to form that body, I encourage you to be who God has called you to be. You have gifts others don’t have, so use your gifts for the purposes God has given you. Love God in a crazy kind of way!

Use your gifts for the purposes God has given you.

Answer: FATHER, SON AND SPIRIT

WHO IS GOD? 2 Corinthians 13:14 Together, Paul and Timothy wrote a letter to the Corinthians. The letter ended with these words about God: “May the grace shown by the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love that God has given us, and the sharing of life brought about by the Holy Spirit be with you all.” Paul knew that God was with him. God is three in one: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Jesus showed us what God’s grace is: Grace is the gift of something that was not earned or deserved. Check out these gifts of grace from our God. By grace, the Father gave His Son, Jesus, to save us, and gave us the faith to believe in Him. We don’t deserve forgiveness, but Jesus died to give it to us. The Holy Spirit leads us in living a new life of doing things God’s way.

What do you think God looks like? Draw a picture of that, or draw a cross to stand for God.

THE HISTORY OF LENT

L

ent is a 40-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday, February 25 this year, and ends April 11, 2009, the day before Easter. Sundays are not counted in the 40 days, as Sundays commemorate the Resurrection.

It is a period that the church sets aside to focus on Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. Lent began in the apostolic era and was universal in the ancient church. For this reason, Lent is observed by the various Presbyterian,

Methodist, Lutheran and Anglican denominations, by Roman Catholics and by Eastern Orthodox churches. In the 16th century, many Calvinists and Anabaptists discarded all Christian holy days on the theory that they were Roman innovations. That was their best information at the time, but today we know they were wrong. In the late 19th century, ancient Christian documents came to light: the Didache from the first century, the Apostolic Constitutions from the third century, and the diaries of Egeria of the fourth century, all of which give evidence of the Christian calendar and holy days. Gradually, the holy days have returned to the churches that had lost them. The restoration quickly began with Easter. Christmas followed in the 19th century, and Advent and Holy Week became widespread among them in the 20th century. Lent has become increasingly important over the past few years in the church, as we recognize the need to prepare for the great celebration of Resurrection.

elonging to the body of Christ is a natural result of belonging to Jesus Christ Himself. But belonging to a local church is a decision. It is like joining a family through marriage. Historically, Northland has not been a church that promoted membership — mostly because membership has been a part of an institutional church mind-set, while Northland is a more organic sort of place. But while membership has not been stressed, certainly belonging to one another as a local believing community is vital. We need each other — to belong, believe, become and be sent out into the world. We need a local community with which to identify, worship and serve. We need a place to contribute and participate. Everyone belongs at Northland. But there are many ways to belong to each other. Some need a more formal process than others in order to connect. Your commitment to Northland can be one that you make to God, and that is the result of your participation in this believing community. Membership is really about helping the church serve you more effectively. Often it is a process that is helpful for being known and knowing others. But whether you are looking for a personal or a more formal way to connect, consider going through the Belong study. It is a personal study about what it means to belong to Christ and to the body of Christ. As a means of completing the connection, there will be multiple opportunities to meet with leaders to personally express this commitment and to share the stories of how God brought us together. Each Wednesday during Lent, from February 18 through April 8, there will be an evening worship experience. A part of these observances will be the welcoming and receiving of believers who have chosen to make Northland their church home. If you are interested in this process but have questions, e-mail Barb Olsen (barbara.olsen@northlandchurch.net).

PREACHING THE MESSAGE THIS WEEKEND DR. JOEL C. HUNTER, SENIOR PASTOR

........................................................................................................................................................................................... Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.

THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:

NOTES:

THE ESSENTIALS OF CHRISTIANITY WHO IS GOD?

................................................................................................................

SCRIPTURE FOCUS:

2 CORINTHIANS 13:14 (NASB)

................................................................................................................

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. WORSHIP FOCUS: ................................................................................................................

Worship God today as both infinite and personal. He is infinite in that He is not subject to any of the limitations of His creation. He is far greater than anything He has made, or anything we can imagine. “But He is also personal: He interacts with us as a person, and we can relate to His as persons. We can pray to Him, worship Him, obey Him, and love Him, and He can speak to us, rejoice in us, and love us.” (Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology) SUMMARY PRAYER: ................................................................................................................

O most loving Father, who wills us to give thanks for all things, to dread nothing but the loss of You, and to cast all our care on You who cares for us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, and grant that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which You have manifested unto us in Your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Adapted from the Book of Common Prayer) RELEVANT READS: ................................................................................................................
