He used his own oil and wine to cleanse the wounds. He bandaged them. He placed him on his own donkey and took him to an inn, personally paying the bill and pledging to cover all the costs of the man’s care. So how did he do with the interruption? Fellowship, Family and (of Course) Food! JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
ow, what an amazing weekend last week was! After hearing a powerful message about the expansion of God’s family through the legal and emotional work of adoption, and spending time hearing stories from the field, both from a video and from our own congregation, about all the ways that can look (foster care, hospitality, adoption ministries and traditional adoption), we moved out from the sanctuary into the foyer and onto the patio for a family lunch with all of our adopted brothers and sisters in Christ! More than 300 people were in attendance! What an incredible experience, seeing all these people that God has called together here at Northland at Oviedo, having a great time getting to know one another better. These are the people who worship God for who He is and what He has done, who seek to know Him and make Him known
by loving Him and loving others, who desire to see our community forever transformed by His work through us, yet too often we sit right next to each other and never connect. We are working hard to not let that happen, so keep your eyes and ears open for more ways to grow in meaningful community. From Neighborhood Gatherings, small groups and Bible studies to service opportunities in our community, we are creating multiple ways we can connect with Him, with one another and with all those not yet included! Thanks for being a part of this amazing happening with all of us here at Northland at Oviedo! >>> OVIEDO.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

s we celebrate the Lord’s table this weekend, we are challenged to remember the sacrifice Jesus made for each one of us. It is because of Jesus’ death on the cross and by His grace that we are saved. And so Jesus calls us to remember Him as we come together around the Communion table. But this weekend we also have a chance to remember others who have sacrificed so much for many of us here — our moms! When I think about my mom and see the many moms I know personally, I know they have sacrificed many things not only to give us life, but to nurture and care for us as well. It is amazing the gifts that are put on the back burner so they can remain at home and care for their children. It is also amazing how many moms are out working to help provide for their families and then come home to be that caregiver and nurturing person God has called them to be. To me, that is the sacrificial love Jesus talks about throughout the Scriptures we are to have for one another. And I believe God has blessed women with this unique gift to have this kind of love for their children. And men, if you are like me, and your wife goes away for a few days and you are left to be the lone caregiver and
provider for your children, it can get overwhelming. I’m not saying we can’t do it, or that we don’t enjoy that time with our kids, but we are so grateful for the moment we see our wives again. And this opportunity gives us a whole different perspective on the gift women have been given to be who God created them to be. It is at this point when we realize men are created differently with very different gifts. So men, feel free to hug your wives often! I also believe Jesus knew exactly what sacrifice He was going to make for each one of us as He gave His life, and I believe women have that natural instinct of knowing the sacrifice they are willing to make for their children. For this I am so grateful to each and every one of you moms, and even those of you who are not moms but have those motherly instincts and give your lives away daily. Thank you for reflecting a Christlike love to all of us who watch you every day. God continues to use you in our lives to teach us about His sacrificial and unconditional love. So this weekend remember Jesus and who He is, and also those women who have given their lives away in such a way that honors God as they love and care for their own families, as well as those they bring in and care for in addition to their own biological children. That is the heart of God, and what a privilege it is for you to give that away to those God looks at with great passion! I would like to wish all of the moms a happy Mother’s Day! God bless you as you continue to give your lives away every day. >>> WESTOAKS.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET

Meet the Family BY MICHAEL VAN HUIS Northland Executive Director Service
I
t is with great joy that we introduce Dana Kobosky as our newest staff member. Dana is taking on the position of director of Life Service and will focus on service projects to our Central Florida community. Our Serve Team projects have become a hallmark expression of this congregation being distributed within our community. Dana has already jumped in and can’t wait to see our time in worship be translated into active and practical service. Dana will need lots of help with the vision we have to see this whole congregation in Central Florida and online serving where we are. If you are interested in volunteering to help with administrative needs, leading a work team, helping with construction projects or just pitching in as needed, please let Dana know, and welcome her to the team. In the meantime, Dana, who has attended Northland for about four years, shares more about herself and her passion for serving and sharing Christ’s love with the community. What do your ministry responsibilities include? My responsibilities include providing opportunities for people to serve our local community, and building and continuing partnerships with local organizations that provide much-needed services in the community.
What difference do you hope to make in the community? Within the Northland community, I want to encourage our Northland family members to view service as an extension of their worship outside of the church walls, into the community and into their everyday lives. I think that service is one way to see a little bit of heaven here on earth. I hope to see every Northlander serving out of thankfulness for the abundance that God has given each of them! Within the larger, local community, I hope that through our service, people who might not know God see His love for them and are drawn toward finding out who God is and toward having a relationship with Him. What book has helped you most in your spiritual walk (in addition to the Bible)? That’s a tough question. I have read a number of books that have helped to shape my spiritual walk. However, one of the first books that really got me thinking about spirituality and what it means to have a “spiritual walk” was probably Blue Like Jazz, by Donald Miller. It was the first book that made me think about my religion and spirituality as a personal interaction and a relationship with God instead of a formula with a checklist of do’s and don’ts. Once I realized that my Dana Kobosky. spiritual walk was about my relationship and daily interaction with God, it changed everything for me! How did you come to know Christ as your personal Savior? I grew up in a Christian home, attending Christian schools, and I always believed in God and the gift of salvation through Jesus’ death on the cross. Sometime late in high school/early in college, however, I didn’t really believe
that God wanted to be a part of my everyday life, that He could possibly be that interested in what happens here on earth. It wasn’t until much later that I realized that God is indeed concerned with my day-to-day life and wants to have a personal relationship with me. So I guess you could say that I accepted Christ’s gift of salvation early on, but it wasn’t until much later that I really started to focus on the “getting to know Him” part. How is Christ transforming your life? He truly has transformed so many areas of my life. Everything from my relationships to my plans and ideas for my future to daily interactions with others is changed because of my relationship with Him. For example, if you would have asked me five years ago if I would ever be working in ministry, at a church nonetheless, I’m pretty sure I would have said no. Now, I can honestly say I can’t imagine anything else I’d rather be doing, nor could I imagine anywhere else I’d rather be. Funny how He changes things, isn’t it? Why are you involved in ministering? My involvement in ministering comes out of the abundance of what God has given me. I’m sure everyone is familiar with the phrase “My cup runneth over.” I used to think that sounded really cheesy, but it’s a true statement for me now. Serving at Northland … and Beyond! Kids Against Hunger Project BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service
R
ecently, we had the opportunity to participate in the Kids Against Hunger Project. Kids Against Hunger is a humanitarian food aid organization that works to significantly reduce the number of hungry children in the United States and to feed starving children throughout the world. The goal of the organization is for its meals to provide a stable nutritional base from which recipient families can move their families from starvation to self-sufficiency. On April 17, a group of approximately 120 serve team members partnered with Kids Against Hunger to pack meals, which would be shipped to assist in the relief efforts in Haiti. Over the course of the morning, the team packed more than 52,000 meals! It’s just another example of the church extending beyond the walls of the building and distributing itself in worship and service.

Answer: HOLY COMMUNION
Come To Jesus
Mark 10:13-16; 14:22-25 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Jesus has always wanted us to come and know Him for who He is and what He has done. The Bible tells us so many amazing things that Jesus has done. Jesus healed the sick, calmed the sea, fed 5,000 people, walked on the water, and He even raised people from the dead! But on the night before Jesus died on the cross, He showed His disciples a special way to remember Him by using bread and the cup as symbols of His body and His blood that He gave to save us. Sharing the bread and the cup is a way we can come to Jesus and remember Him.

Family Worship: Wiggles and Worship
O
ver the past several weeks, Pastor Joel has been preaching about how to build great families. Consider the importance of worshiping together as a family. If your children are young, consider involving them in online worship for a part of a service each week. It can be a great way to introduce them to corporate worship. In addition, during this preaching series, there will be an article here each week to give you more ideas on how you can worship as a family. Many families try worshiping with their children, only to be frustrated when children cannot sit still. Learning to participate in corporate worship can take time. Try the following ways of helping your children participate in worship.
Worship in Music
• Have your children stand when everyone else stands. Lift them up or stand by an aisle so they can see the screens and the lead worshipers. • Encourage them to sing. If they cannot read the words, show them how to hum or sing “la-la” to the tune of the music. Or teach them a few words of the chorus, and encourage them to sing the words whenever they hear them. Kids love to clap and shake to the music, so be sure to do both when the beat is appropriate! • Ask your children to choose one song and describe through words or drawings what the song says about God. (If you have created worship folders*, this is a great place for these.)
• Have your children bring their own Bibles to church. The Northland Bookstore staff can assist you in finding an appropriate Bible for each child. • Help your children who read to find the Scripture passage, and encourage them to read along. • For children learning to read, hold your Bible so they can see the words. Point to the words to help them follow the reading.
Communion
If you feel your children are ready to participate in Communion, introduce them to this special sacrament. • Before the service, talk about what Communion means. Talk about religious rituals and symbolism. • Read together how Jesus first introduced this sacrament with His disciples in Matthew 26:17-20 and 26-30. Explain that Christians continue to practice this ritual to remember that Jesus died on the cross so that our sins are forgiven, and to remember that He is coming again to take us to heaven. Assure your children that the bread and juice are just reminders or symbols (like pictures) of Jesus and are not really parts of Him. • During the reflection time in Communion, ask your children to write or draw in their worship folders* what they have learned about Communion. • Discuss their experience during your ride home. *The worship folder is a tool in which your children can write or draw their thoughts and questions during listening moments in the service. Let them each choose and decorate a hard-covered three-ring binder, and then fill the folders with blank paper and colored pencils.

For each week the Family Table Time kit provides an activity place mat, upon which you will create your family memories. It becomes the foundation for building your family relationships and the place where each week family members jot down ideas, record experiences, catalog feelings and set goals. Together the family members will work to articulate their purpose, direction and values. Our family has become so much stronger and happier. As we shared our story and kit with other families, we found we were not alone. After some encouragement, we decided to share more of the information we have learned over the years to help other families reconnect. — Neal and Jill Kimball, creators of the Family Table Time kit For more information, visit www.familytabletime.com.

BUILDING HEAVEN-LIKE FAMILIES
Preaching the message this weekend: Dr. Joel C. Hunter, Senior Pastor
Dr. Hunter believes we can accomplish more because of our differences than we would on our own—without giving up our unique identities. He says, “Both spiritual and intellectual maturity grow from differences. A distributed church uses contrasts to accomplish Kingdom purposes.” Since June 1985, Dr. Hunter has served as senior pastor of Northland. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner. He serves as a national and international leader both in compassion issues and on boards of agencies such as the National Association of Evangelicals and the World Evangelical Alliance. >>> TO READ MORE ABOUT DR. HUNTER, VISIT WWW.NORTHLANDCHURCH.NET.
THIS WEEKEND’S MESSAGE:
Happy Together … Growing Together as We Grow in Christ How to Be a Heaven-sent Parent Scripture focus:
Ephesians 6:1-4 (NASB)
Worship focus:
....................................................................................................................................................
........................................................................
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Worship God today as our Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called His children! And indeed we are! (Ephesians 3:10; 1 John 3:1)
NOTES: summary prayer: ........................................................................
Loving God, You nurture and guide us like a father and mother. We pray for the families of this congregation and for all Christian families everywhere. Give them strength to honor you in their homes and to love and serve each other. Help all who have been baptized in your name to live in peace and unity as sisters and brothers in the household of faith, and to serve others in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. (Worship Sourcebook)
