I
n “The Parable of the Sower” of Luke 8:4-15, Jesus reveals the different responses humans have to the Word of God. Some people hear the Truth and flatly reject it. Others show some spiritual interest but quickly fall away. Still others embrace the Truth of God and become Christians. But Jesus drills down, drawing a distinction among believers. Here’s what He says: “The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” — Luke 8:14-15 (NIV) The “seed” is the Word of God. One man believes but chronically stumbles in suffering and sin and never reaches his full potential as a Christian. The other man believes and, despite the same obstacles, perseveres through them and lives a fruitful life in Christ. What marks the difference? The answer lies in their hunger for God.
King David was a man who was hungry for more of God in his life. Nothing filled him up like the Lord. He wrote, “One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple” (Psalm 27:4, NIV). David had great power, a prosperous family, tremendous wealth and widespread influence. Yet he considered all that secondary to knowing, loving, seeking and worshiping God. How did he do it? The poem gives the answer. He committed to “dwell in,” “gaze upon” and “seek him” every day of his life. Even when he fell into adultery, deception and murder, and even though these sins brought trouble for the rest of his days (read it in 2 Samuel 11-20), he retained the love of God and persevered to the end of his life. Are you hungry for more of God in your life? Are you struggling but want to be hungry for God? He sees your heart for Him and desires to fill it. Here are a few ways that you can stir up a hunger for more of God in your life: • Read His Word. Spend time in the Bible every day. It is truly the words of God, written for your encouragement, direction and growth. Read one to two chapters a day. I suggest starting in Luke or John, then moving on to Acts or Romans. • Pray, pray, pray. Build a continual conversation with the Holy Spirit. Spend as much time praying about an issue as you do thinking about that issue. • Worship Him. Pay Jesus homage, respect and honor. Tell Him how awesome He is. The psalms are a great assistant in your worship time. • Repent regularly. Be quick to confess your sins to the Lord as they come up. Tell Him the faulty thoughts and feelings you have, too, and ask Him to heal you of those. • Think God’s thoughts. Strive in every circumstance to ask the Lord how He views the situation, what His will and
desire would be. This includes your own self-talk. • Find godly friends. No one is an island. Hungry Christians need to be around hungry Christians, for encouragement, accountability and challenge. • Serve and give. Don’t store up your time, talent and wealth for yourself. Serve others and give liberally to God’s causes. Build a lifestyle like this. As a minister of the Gospel, my great desire is to see you become hungry for more of God in your life. Please receive this prayer as God’s invitation to a deeper walk with Him:
“Holy Spirit, I ask You to give the reader
of this column a deep hunger for more of You in his or her life. I ask You to speak to this person through Your Word and in prayer. I ask You to fill this person’s heart with worshipfulness and repentance. I ask You to change this person’s thoughts to become increasingly like Yours. I ask You to bring God-hungry people into this person’s life who can help in his or her journey with You. And I ask You to fill this person’s mind with a desire to serve others and to give to Your causes, and then bring the opportunities to do so. And I pray this, for my brother or sister in Christ, in Jesus’ name.
Amen.”

The Importance of Prayer JEREMY JOBSON Northland at Oviedo Site Minister
W
e have been meeting on Wednesday nights for several weeks now, and it has been amazing! Why wouldn’t it be? This is the body of Christ in communion with each other and with God; is there anything better? Rather than your taking my word for it, for the last few weeks, I simply have been listing some verses on the importance of prayer for us, His people! (All are taken from the NIV.) Luke 22:40: “On reaching the place, he said to them, ‘Pray that you will not fall into temptation.’” John 14:13-14: “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” John 15:7: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.” John 16:23: “In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.” Romans 8:26: “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.”
1 Corinthians 14:15: “So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.” Ephesians 6:18-19: “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.” Philippians 4:6: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:19: “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” Colossians 1:9-15: “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord.” 1 Peter 3:7: “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” 1 Peter 4:7: “The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.” 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 3:21-22: “Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him.”

D
esde hace tres meses, Northland tiene servicios religiosos traducidos al español los domingos a las 9 am y 11 am. Una de las cosas más interesantes de conocer personas de diferentes culturas, especialmente cristianos, es que aprendemos más acerca de Dios desde sus perpectivas, lo que enriquece el cuerpo de Cristo de otras culturas. Las culturas aprenden de otras, y esto nos ayuda a servirles mejor, y aprendemos de ellas. El pastor Joel recientemente nos recordó que estamos unidos en la sangre de Jesucristo. Un aspecto maravilloso de las escrituras es que nuestra unidad está en la persona y trabajo de Jesucristo, y que Él está en todas las culturas y trasciende todas las culturas. Desde que Northland comenzó a ofrecer el servicio traducido al español en línea y en su sede en Longwood, ha sido un placer conocer más hispanoparlantes provenientes de diversas culturas hispanas, como Clara de Colombia y su esposo José de Puerto Rico. Northland Family Celebrate & Serve Night The next step in serving … are you ready for this? BY MICHAEL VAN HUIS Northland Executive Director, Service
“T
he service here has ended. Your service has just begun.” Pastor Vernon Rainwater often closes Northland’s worship services with these words of benediction. God has called Northland to worship everywhere, every day. Thousands answer that call each week by gathering locally and online around the world to worship together, and then living out each day of the week in a life of worship. God also has called Northland to serve in the local and global community. Thousands are answering that call as well. So what does the next step look like for us as we find ways to worship God and serve others everywhere, every day? Are you ready for this?
Why Do We Serve? BY dana kobosky Director of Life Service
W
hether it’s within the church or out in the general community, there is a lot of talk these days about service and doing something for others. Many groups focus on doing something for others because it’s the right thing to do or because it makes you feel like you’ve done something worthwhile. Both of those are definitely true about service and are certainly valid reasons for serving others. However, as Christians, we have a Christ-centered approach to service. For us, service means so much more. It is not about making ourselves feel good or just doing something nice for others. Instead, service is another area of our lives in which we are brought to God in worship! Think about most of the stories of Jesus in the Bible. He’s usually involved in serving others. Jesus, the Son of God, Creator of the universe, is out in the community, getting His hands dirty and meeting the basic needs of the people around Him so that His Father in Heaven would be glorified through it. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve....” (Mark 10:45). Therefore, as sons and daughters of God, service is not just something we do; it’s part of who we are. It’s not about us; rather, it’s about what God is doing in us and through us to glorify Him. Jesus showed us that service is worship! I want to encourage you today to worship God. Worship Him in song and praise here in the sanctuary or online, but don’t forget to take your worship outside of the building. Worship Him in your dayto-day work, in your interactions with others, and through serving those around you. Serve by finding a need in the community that you can meet, and let God take care of the rest!
In an effort to bring our worlds of worship and service together, Northland Family Celebrate & Serve Night will begin with worship as young artists from Northland’s Worship in the Arts Camp present The Story, a celebration of who God is and what He has done. After this time of worship, everyone will gather in the foyer to pack more than 15,000 meals to serve the needs of the children of Haiti. All ages can help! One hundred percent of admission proceeds will be used to purchase meal supplies for Kids Against Hunger. Your ticket cost will purchase supplies to pay for more than 40 meals. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3 to 12; children under age 3 are admitted free. Tickets are available online. Visit www. northlandchurch.net and select the “Events” tab. Then select the Northland Family Celebrate & Serve Night listing. That will provide you with more information and instructions on purchasing tickets. How might God move in the hearts of friends and family members you invite? How might He speak to you? How might this evening affect the mind-set of future generations? Come and see. Four Ways You Can Serve Today We know it can be difficult to find one service project that fits everyone’s schedule and talents. That’s why we try to provide a variety of opportunities for you to serve others! Here are a few ideas that can help you incorporate service into your families, your small groups and your lives. 1. Sign up for a Local Serve Day. Approximately one Saturday a month, Northland has a church-wide service day. A number of projects are available on these days, and they are geared toward all abilities and ages. Projects start at 8 a.m. and are typically completed by noon. Local Serve Days are an easy way to get you, your family and friends involved in a day of service together! Our next Local Serve Day is July 10. You can find out more about the projects and sign up by visiting www.northlandchurch.net/serve/local.

2. Volunteer at Northland. It takes hundreds of volunteers to make our weekend worship services complete. Northland needs many types of volunteers, including children’s teachers and helpers, greeters, Communion servers and parking attendants, among others. — The purpose of this trip is to demonstrate God’s love to youths in a sports camp so they will come into a personal relationship with Christ. Ukraine: July 16 to 30 — This team will support New Life Church in running a summer camp and building relationships with the students there through sports and other activities. PeaceSeekers Teaches Biblical Approach to Handling Conflict
I
t was one of those husband-and-wife spats – you know, the kind that start out as a simple disagreement and then get heated. The wife was a teacher and had developed a tone and volume that could control a class of 30. The husband was an attorney, well-versed in how to argue and set a trap with leading questions. As the discussion grew into an argument, each side used his or her best skills to “win” the debate. As things were getting rough, the wife excused herself to use the restroom, and then returned to the verbal boxing event. It was as if both sides returned to their corners, planning their strategy for the next round. But this was no ordinary couple. The husband in this story was Ken Sande, president of Peacemaker Ministries and author of The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict (available in the Northland Bookstore), and his wife, one of the ministry’s best writers. Just as Corlette returned to the room, Ken heard a clear, convicting voice in his heart that said, “And how will those comments glorify God?”
Instantly, he lost all energy for the argument, and instead of attacking, he apologized. Instead of delivering a knockout punch, he confessed his sinful attitude, and what could easily have been a trying and difficult day became a day of joy and forgiveness, a day in which God was glorified. As Christians, we still so easily get tangled up in handling our differences the way the world does — where there is a winner and a loser. God’s Word teaches us to live in a radically different way from the rest of the world. Scripture teaches us that we can and should be handling conflict in a way that honors God and maintains positive relationships. Only then does anyone win. Learn the biblical approach to handling conflict and making a difference in your relationships by attending the PeaceSeekers class coming to Northland at Longwood September 5 to October 21. Ministry Spreading the News of His Goodness – in Spanish BY Mike Fernández Spanish Ministry Leader
T
hree months ago, Northland had its first Spanish-interpreted worship services at 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday. One of the exciting things about meeting people of different cultures, particularly Christians, is that we learn more about God from their perspective, which enriches the body of Christ of other cultures. Cultures learn from other cultures, and this helps us serve them better, and we learn from them. Pastor Joel recently reminded us that we are united in the blood of Jesus Christ. One wonderful aspect about Scripture is that our unity is in the person and work of Jesus Christ, and He is in and transcends all cultures. Since Northland began offering Spanish interpretation online and on site at Northland at Longwood, it’s been a delight to meet more Spanish-speaking people from various Spanish cultures, such as Clara from Colombia, and her husband, Jose, from Puerto Rico. He enjoys listening to Pastor Joel in English as she listens to him in Spanish via an interpreter. They both love the Christ-centered preaching and worship. With that love, Clara has an appreciation and gratitude to the Lord and is now applying to volunteer with Northland’s Children’s Ministries. Scripture says we are one body, one church, with many parts. Galatians 3:26-28 says, “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (NIV). It is an encouragement to see the church body working together and honoring God for who He is and what He has done because of Christ. With this as the foundation, and as the Spanish ministry unfolds as an important gift for others, we fulfill the royal law to love God and love others. Clara’s example of volunteering is a great example of that. As we grow together by taking Bible classes, worshiping together at church or online, serving others, and encouraging each other to mature in Christ, let’s remember that the blood that is thicker than water is that which was shed for us on the cross. Jesus unites us all and is in all cultures while transcending them. It will be exciting to see how God will shape this ministry for His glory. I look forward to those who are volunteering in different capacities to serve this ministry. May He use all of us to spread the news of His goodness. Before bringing his family to Northland, Dr. Hunter served as a United Methodist pastor for 15 years in Indiana. He and his wife, Becky, have been partners in the ministry since their marriage in 1972. A longtime bridge builder who seeks common ground for the common good, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner.
