About Northland, A Church Distributed WHAT WE BELIEVE The Bible

— We believe the Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is verbally inspired of God, is inerrant in the original writings, and is the Christian’s final authority in faith and conduct. (2 Timothy 3:16)

God

— The Trinity — We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 6:8) Jesus Christ — We believe by miracle of the virgin birth that the Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God in order to reveal God and to redeem man. He is the substitutionary sacrifice for our sins and arose bodily from the dead for our justification. He is now exalted at the right hand of God, Head of the Church and Lord of the individual believer, fulfilling His ministry as our Great High Priest and Advocate. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:1-3) Holy Spirit — We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates and converts sinners, and baptizes them into the church, which is the body of Christ. We believe that He indwells, guides, instructs and empowers the believer for godly living and service, and that He seals and keeps him until the Lord comes. We believe that He bestows spiritual gifts upon each one. We believe that the believer has received one or more spiritual gifts so that he might exercise them for the strengthening and outreach of the body of Christ. The practice of any gift in any gathered body shall be in keeping with the Scripture. (John 14:16-17; Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:7)

The Means of Salvation

— We believe that salvation from the guilt and condemnation of sin is possible only as the gift of God’s grace. It cannot be gained by good resolutions, sincere efforts, or submission to the rules, regulations or ordinances of any church, but is freely bestowed on all who put their faith in Christ and trust in the work that Christ accomplished on the cross of Calvary. All who so trust the Savior pass from death unto life, and are forgiven of their sins, accepted by the Father, and born into His family by the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. (John 5:24; Ephesians 1:67; 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:23)

Security, Assurance and Responsibility

— We believe that all the saved, those in whom God has accomplished His transforming work of grace, are kept by His power and are thus secure in Christ forever. It is their privilege to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation. However, this assurance must not be the occasion for sin, for God in His holiness cannot tolerate persistent sin in His children, and in infinite love He corrects them. True faith in Christ is expressed by a fruitful, God-pleasing life. (John 10:2729; Romans 8:19-39; 1 John 5:13; Hebrews 12:6; Matthew 7:20; James 2:20)

Man

— We believe that man was created in the image of God, but that he sinned, incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is separation from God and which is inherited by every member of Adam’s race. We believe that man is subject to the power of the devil and has within himself no possible means of recovery or salvation. (Genesis 1:26; 1 John 1:8-10; Romans 6:23)

OUR PURPOSE: WHY WE ARE HERE From its inception in 1972, Northland has been unwavering in its purpose: To bring people to maturity in Christ.

OUR VISION: WHAT WE SEE

A vision is a clear mental picture of a preferable future. It sees the future through the eyes of faith. It shares the perspective of the biblical writer when he wrote the following words: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB). Northland’s vision is to see people coming to Christ, and to be transformed together as we link locally and globally to worship and serve everywhere, every day.

OUR MISSION: WHAT WE DO

At Northland, we believe God’s call to us as a body of believers is to respond to Him for the benefit of others. There are countless ways that one can respond to God’s grace and goodness. We have identified the following ways that we, as a church, regularly want to respond together: Worshiping God — John 4:21 Glorify God for who He is and what He has done. Reading the Bible — Jeremiah 1:12 Study God’s message to you often. Sharing our stories — 1 Peter 3:15 Tell others what God is doing in your life. Being in community — John 13:35 Foster environments for relationship. Praying — 1 Peter 3:12 Engage in conversation with God. Serving others — Matthew 25:40 Meet the needs of the people around you. Living generously — Matthew 6:21 Give what God’s given you.

The Church

— We believe that the true church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit, that those who are members of the true church will be eligible for membership in the local church. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are to be observed by the church during the present age. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are acts of obedience to the Lord. Participation in them, though, is not to be regarded in any sense as a means of salvation. (Acts 2)

The Christian’s Walk

— We believe that we are called with a holy calling to walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, and so to live in the power of the indwelling Spirit of God. The flesh (our natural desire), which in this life is never fully eradicated, must be kept by the Spirit (through our walk of faith), constantly in subjection to Christ, or it will surely manifest its presence in our lives, to the dishonor of our Lord. (Ephesians 2:10; Galatians 5:16)

The Eternal State

— We believe that the souls of those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation do, at death, immediately pass into His presence and there remain in conscious bliss until the resurrection of the body at His coming for the church, when soul and glorified body, reunited, will be associated with Him forever in glory. We believe that unbelievers will be punished with everlasting separation from the presence of the Lord and the glory of His power. (John 3:15-16; Hebrews 9:28; Matthew 25:41-46)

The object of a New Year is not that

we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. SNAPSHOTS 2012

A year in review in pictures and words. Together we worshiped God for who He is and what He has done at 250-plus live worship services. More than 8,000 inmates have worshiped with us this year at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility and the Orange County Correctional Facility. So far as we know, we’re the only church in the world where our congregants outside of jail worship concurrently with those who are incarcerated.

362 people of all ages participated in 22 Distributed Journeys to countries including Kenya, Ukraine, Brazil and the Dominican Republic. 1,250 middle and high school students regularly attend one of our youth programs. We have true discipleship happening every week, and many students continue to confess their desire to follow Christ more closely, with 30 recorded decisions for Christ and 35 student baptisms this year.

Thousands of people around the world worshiped with us online. We launched a new live worship site, which saw 120,000 streaming connections. We also helped our partners stream their live worship services in Egypt (71,875 streaming connections), Ukraine (6,542 streaming connections) and Brazil (2,000 streaming connections). In total, we streamed enough data to fill 80,000 1GB thumb drives!

23,800 gift-filled shoe boxes were collected for Operation Christmas Child to be distributed to needy children around the globe. 21,858 meals were served by the Disaster Response Team during deployments. The team rolled out the mobile kitchen to serve those affected by Hurricane Sandy in Far Rockaway, N.Y., and to help rebuild a church in Live Oak, Fla., which saw significant flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.

14,500 people participated in Local Serve Days, serving the community in tangible ways and demonstrating God’s love for those around us. The Celebrate Recovery team traveled to Scotland and helped several churches there implement Christ-focused 12-step programs as part of their ministries. 70 elders were trained to help shepherd and serve the congregation in prayer and discipleship.

Hundreds of kids accepted Jesus into their hearts at Children’s Church, and many children and babies were baptized and dedicated. Average weekly attendance for Children’s Church at Longwood was 932, with 333 volunteers serving each week. Children’s Church offerings exceeded $13,000, supporting local and global missions. More than 1,600 dads and daughters bonded at the daddy-daughter dance, with 133 volunteers serving at the event.

1,150 folks from the church and throughout the community came out to the Family Fall Festival. 104 students attended the Worship in the Arts Camp and put on an amazing program benefiting Seminole County Public Schools’ Families in Transition (FIT) program. 30 children monthly attend Buddy Break, a free respite program designed to give caregivers of kids with special needs a break from their caregiving responsibilities. December marks the end of our second year of being a catalyst for the planting of 1 million new churches around the world. In total, we have conducted training for more than 550 pastors and leaders, who have planted 1,400 new churches and seen nearly 25,000 people make decisions to follow Jesus. A library, a computer lab and a wading pool were added at the community center in Namibia, Africa, where our distributed pastor, Lon Garber, is helping the poor to develop entrepreneurial skills that enable them to support themselves and their families.

As of this year, a total of 7,820 people have been registered in the Resource Point database, which connects people in need with resources that can help.

The bookstore celebrated its 25th anniversary and recently moved into a great new space. Through donations, hundreds of Bibles were put into precious hands at jails, schools, pregnancy centers and special events for veterans.

The number of people helping people at thecommon.org: 676. The Family Advocacy Office opened at Longwood, supporting Seminole County Public Schools’ Families in Transition (FIT) program and providing hope and help to homeless schoolchildren and their families.

Marriage Prep engaged 80-plus couples through mentoring and classes. Additionally, Marriage 911 saw more than 130 participants. Many who attended came to know Christ as a result of the classes. Thousands of lives were touched by the many classes and Bible studies offered through the church, including Growing Kids God’s Way, Being Good to Your Husband on Purpose, Healthy Living, those by Beth Moore, Compass and Financial Peace University.

Many attended new believers classes and took first steps in their faith journeys. A Veterans for Christ group was started at Longwood, with the goal of encouraging one another and reaching out and serving other vets in the community. In July, the Oviedo site hosted Local Serve Day, where 500 Northlanders joined together at RTS for a time of worship, breakfast and fellowship before heading out into our community to lift up God’s name through acts of service. More than 80 worshipers participated in the firstever Serve Day at the Mount Dora site. Also, a permanent space for community, equipping and offices was secured for the site.

65 homeless families have been referred to Northland’s Family Advocacy Office. Volunteers have put in more than 1,500 hours walking alongside these families and connecting them with resources to attain self-sufficiency. As of this year, more than 90 individuals transitioning out of prison have been helped by the Healing and Transition program, a reentry ministry birthed by Northland that operates out of Harvest Time International, in Sanford. More than 85 percent of those who have graduated from the program have stayed out of jail. 50 volunteers, many of them Northlanders, served at the Central Florida Dental Outreach organized by Greenberg Dental and treated 237 adults, performing $167,831 in free dental services.

Our children’s curriculum is now being used in at least 22 countries around the world. We were able to train 270 children’s ministry workers in some of our global partner churches this year in the Dominican Republic, Egypt and China. Care ministers and volunteers walked alongside 5,000 people with support groups, hospital visits, nursing home visits and one-to-one care.

Prayer volunteers responded to 8,000 prayer requests, and many people reported being healed physically and emotionally as a result. The first live Northland worship service was held at the Orlando Bridge, a therapeutic community for adult male felony drug offenders with substance abuse, dependency or criminal behavior issues.

More than 900 people strengthened their marriages at The Marriage Show, with authors Les and Leslie Parrott. 5,000 hours were spent counseling people and helping them through life’s issues. Also, through a partnership with the Oviedo Counseling Clinic, we helped train 300 ministry leaders, who are now serving all over the world in churches, schools, seminaries and more.

More than 1,000 people received assistance from LifeHope, which serves those in need for the purpose of connecting them to a relationship with God. Recipients attend budget classes and participate in weekly worship and Local Serve projects. Social work interns from the University of Central Florida put in 2,140 hours serving at LifeHope.

1,566 bags packed with food and hygiene items were collected during this fall’s Red Bag Project. Donated items helped stock food pantries at local schools, benefiting the more than 1,800 homeless students in Seminole County. Under the direction of Pastor Vernon, the True North Foundation opened Art House Orlando, a creative hub for connection, inspiration, encouragement, mentoring and restoration. The Foundation’s imprint also published its first book, People Who Sing Jesus, by Sean Cooper, and its first album, Hallowed Ground, by Pete Geiger. In response to the new vision laid out by Pastor Joel, the mobilization team identified more than 1,500 opportunities for volunteers to get involved in 2013.

SERVE LOCALLY God Works Through Others BY JUDY HEAD

oe and I came to Northland in 1998, but after a couple of years, we left, thinking the church was just too big for us. But as I have now come to realize, things could have been so different. Since listening to Pastor Joel’s sermons, we have discovered that if we had made the connections he talks about, we might not have thought it was so big. Joe and I decided to return to Northland in 2010 because we wanted to be involved with the disaster response ministry team. Joe and I decided we were going to do things differently this time. Making connections and becoming involved was going to be our priority. We went on several disaster team deployments and began building relationships. This past fall, I was asked to help coordinate the Local Serve projects. I faced my first big challenge several days before the big Local Serve Day. Everything was in place except for one project. There was one project for which no one had signed up. This was very Katherina discouraging for me. Joe and I began to pray for volunteers. I began to talk to everyone I could, asking each one to join. Little did I know, God already had plans for filling this project with just the right people. God was putting His team together—not just any team, but a unique team that would have a direct connection with me. I was about to cancel the project when a call came from Rosemarie Vigilante-Nomikos. She was looking for a place for her family and friends to all serve together on the same project. They were a team of ten … and an answer to my prayers!

But why was this a unique team? Their mission and purpose was to work together on a project in loving memory of her 18-year-old daughter, Katherina, who had recently passed away. This project was to honor Katherina on her birthday, which was the Local Serve Day. Rosemarie was not only a new connection for me. Little did I know, God would bring us together through our similar stories. You see, I also lost a teenage daughter. Amy was 17 when she was taken in an automobile accident. God brought Rosemarie and me together through the tragedy in our lives and allowed us to connect through serving others. What a blessing it was to have this family team fill the void we had on the Local Serve project. It was as if God tossed a pebble into a pond, and both Rosemarie and I were able to see the ripple effects of our common experiences and how they can be used to serve others. So all we have to do is step back and watch the beautiful tapestry God weaves creating our story. He pulls the connections together, tugs at our hearts, and presses us on to further service for His Kingdom.

Family Advocacy Office

Serving Homeless Families BY MARIA PENZES

he Family Advocacy Office (FAO) Northland is a volunteer-based program working in partnership with Seminole County Public Schools’ Families in Transition (SCPS’ FIT) program. FAO Resource Advocates have been trained and work specifically with FIT families for a period of three months, connecting them to community resources, both school and other related agencies. The goal of this program is to help empower the families to achieve some stability through the connection of community resources as well as to provide a transition path to another community resource to attain self-sufficiency. FAO offers a safe environment of respect, encouragement and objectivity in the midst of families’ personal crisis of homelessness. FAO understands and supports the mission of SCPS FIT, which is to allow stability in the lives of the school-aged children to learn. Each referred FIT family is paired with an FAO Resource Advocate for a three-month period. During that time, the FIT family meets regularly with its FAO Resource Advocate to talk through various resource needs and issues that might arise. Couples or individuals interested in making a difference in the lives of more than 900 homeless families with school-aged children in Seminole County are needed. The commitment: about 10 hours a month to help one family for a 90-day window to connect to resources within SCPS and other community resources. PASTOR’S BIO Dr. Joel C. Hunter has served as Northland’s senior pastor since 1985. During Pastor Hunter’s tenure, Northland has grown from 200 faithful souls to a community of 15,000 that worships around the globe. An internationally respected evangelical leader, Dr. Hunter approaches today’s issues in a biblical and balanced manner, and has championed the cause of “Compassion Issues” found in Scripture, including pro-life concerns, justice, poverty and creation care. He serves on the boards of the World Evangelical Alliance (with 420 million constituents) and the National Association of Evangelicals (with 30 million members), and is regularly featured on local and national media outlets. A longtime bridge-builder who seeks common ground for the common good, he is a frequent consultant to U.S. agencies and served during the inaugural year on the U.S. president’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been married to his best friend and ministry partner, Becky, since 1972. They have three married sons and six grandchildren, including one in heaven.
